We developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) model capable of predicting the performance of various ion-doped NASICON compounds by leveraging extensive datasets from prior experimental investigation.The model demonstrated high accuracy and efficiency in predicting ionic conductivity and electrochemical properties. Key findings include the successful synthesis and validation of three NASICON materials predicted by the model, with experimental results closely matching the model predictions. This research not only enhances the understanding of ion-doping effects in NASICON materials but also establishes a robust framework for material design and practical applications. The exceptional electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries has spurred considerable interest in advanced battery technologies, particularly those utilizing ternary nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) cathode materials, which are renowned for their robust electrochemical performance and structural stability. Building upon this research, investigators have explored doping additional elements into NCM cathode materials to further enhance their electrochemical performance and structural integrity. However, the multitude of doping strategies available for NCM battery systems presents a challenge in determining the most effective approach. In this study, we elucidate the potential of ternary NCM systems as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. We compile a comprehensive database of lithium-ion batteries employing NCM systems from various sources of prior research and develop a corresponding data-driven model utilizing graph neural networks to predict optimal doping strategies. Our aim is to provide insights into the NCM-based battery systems for both fundamental understanding and practical applications.

Adjusting chemical pressure through doping is a highly effective method for customizing the chemical and physical properties of materials, along with their respective phase diagrams, thereby uncovering novel quantum phenomena. Here, we successfully synthesized Sr-doped Eu$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$AgP $(x = 0.0-0.6)$ and conducted a comprehensive investigation involving crystallography, magnetization, heat capacity, and magnetoresistance. Utilizing X-ray diffraction and PPMS DynaCool measurements, we studied Eu$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$AgP in detail. The hexagonal structure of parent EuAgP at room temperature, with the $P6_3/mmc$ space group, remains unaltered, while the lattice constants expand. The magnetic phase transition from paramagnetism to ferromagnetism, as temperature decreases, is suppressed through the gradual introduction of strontium doping. Heat capacity measurements reveal a shift from magnon-dominated to predominantly phonon and electron contributions near the ferromagnetic phase with increasing doping levels. The resistivity-temperature relationship displays distinct characteristics, emphasizing the impact of Sr doping on modifying charge transport. Magnetoresistance measurements uncover novel phenomena, illustrating the adjustability of magnetoresistance through Sr doping. Notably, Sr doping results in both positive magnetoresistance (up to 20\%) and negative magnetoresistance (approximately -60\%). The resistivity and magnetic phase diagram were established for the first time, revealing the pronounced feasibility of Sr doping in modulating EuAgP's resistivity. This study has provided valuable insights into the intricate interplay between structural modifications and diverse physical properties. Magnesium ion batteries (MIBs) are a potential field for the energy storage of the future but are restricted by insufficient rate capability and rapid capacity degradation. Magnesium-sodium hybrid ion batteries (MSHBs) are an effective way to address these problems. Here, we report a new type of MSHBs that use layered sodium vanadate ((Na, Mn)V8O20 5H2O, Mn-NVO) cathodes coupled with an organic 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI) anode in Mg2+/Na+ hybrid electrolytes. During electrochemical cycling, Mg2+ and Na+ co-participate in the cathode reactions, and the introduction of Na+ promotes the structural stability of the Mn-NVO cathode, as cleared by several ex-situ characterizations. Consequently, the Mn-NVO cathode presents great specific capacity (249.9 mAh g-1 at 300 mA g-1) and cycling (1500 cycles at 1500 mA g-1) in the Mg2+/Na+ hybrid electrolytes. Besides, full battery displays long lifespan with 10,000 cycles at 1000 mA g-1. The rate performance and cycling stability of MSHBs have been improved by an economical and scalable method, and the mechanism for these improvements was discussed.

Corrosion and the formation of by-products resulting from parasitic side reactions, as well as random dendrite growth, pose significant challenges for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). In this study, phytate ammonium is introduced into the traditional dilute Zinc sulfate electrolyte as a multi-functional additive. Leveraging the inherent zincophilic nature of the phytic anion, a protective layer is formed on the surface of the zinc anode. This layer can effectively manipulate the deposition process, mitigate parasitic reactions, and reduce the accumulation of detrimental by-products. Additionally, the competitive deposition between dissociated ammonium ions and Zn2+ promotes uniform deposition, thereby alleviating dendrite growth. Consequently, the modified electrolyte with a lower volume addition exhibits superior performance. The zinc symmetric battery demonstrates much more reversible plating/stripping, sustaining over 2000 hours at 5 mA cm-2 and 1 mA h cm-2. A high average deposition/stripping efficiency of 99.83% is achieved, indicating the significant boosting effect and practical potential of our strategy for high-performance aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

We synthesized the ferromagnetic EuAgP semiconductor and conducted a comprehensive study of its crystalline, magnetic, heat capacity, band gap, and magnetoresistance properties. Our investigation utilized a combination of X-ray diffraction, optical, and PPMS DynaCool measurements. EuAgP adopts a hexagonal structure with the $P6_3/mmc$ space group. As the temperature decreases, it undergoes a magnetic phase transition from high-temperature paramagnetism to low-temperature ferromagnetism. We determined the ferromagnetic transition temperature to be $T_{\textrm{C}} =$ 16.45(1) K by fitting the measured magnetic susceptibility using a Curie-Weiss law. Heat capacity analysis of EuAgP considered contributions from electrons, phonons, and magnons, revealing $\eta$ = 0.03 J/mol/$\textrm{K}^\textrm{2}$, indicative of semiconducting behavior. Additionally, we calculated a band gap of $\sim$ 1.324(4) eV based on absorption spectrum measurements. The resistivity versus temperature of EuAgP measured in the absence of an applied magnetic field shows a pronounced peak around $T_{\textrm{C}}$, which diminishes rapidly with increasing applied magnetic fields, ranging from 1 to 14 T. An intriguing phenomenon emerges in the form of a distinct magnetoresistance transition, shifting from positive (e.g., 1.95\% at 300 K and 14 T) to negative (e.g., -30.73\% at 14.25 K and 14 T) as the temperature decreases. This behavior could be attributed to spin-disordered scattering.

We have successfully grown large and good-quality single crystals of the La$_{0.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$Cr$_{0.90}$O$_{3-\delta}$ compound using the floating-zone method with laser diodes. We investigated the crystal quality, crystallography, chemical composition, magnetic properties and the oxidation state of Cr in the grown single crystals by employing a combination of techniques, including X-ray Laue and powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, magnetization measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and light absorption. The La$_{0.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$Cr$_{0.90}$O$_{3-\delta}$ single crystal exhibits a single-phase composition, crystallizing in a trigonal structure with the space group $R\bar{3}c$ at room temperature. The chemical composition was determined as La$_{0.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$Cr$_{0.90}$O$_{3-\delta}$, indicating a significant chromium deficiency. Upon warming, we observed five distinctive characteristic temperatures, namely $T_1 =$ 21.50(1) K, $T_2 =$ 34.98(1) K, $T_3 =$ 117.94(1) K, $T_4 =$ 155.01(1) K, and $T_{\textrm{N}} =$ 271.80(1) K, revealing five distinct magnetic anomalies. Our magnetization study allows us to explore the nature of these anomalies. Remarkably, the oxidation state of chromium in the single-crystal La$_{0.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$Cr$_{0.90}$O$_{3-\delta}$, characterized by a band gap of 1.630(8) eV, is exclusively attributed to Cr$^{3+}$ ions, making a departure from the findings of previous studies on polycrystalline materials., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures

As typical solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), {Na}$_{1+x}${Zr}$_2${Si}$_{x}${P}$_{3-x}${O}$_{12}$ NASICONs provide an ideal platform for solid-state batteries (SSBs) that display higher safety and accommodate higher energy densities. The critical points for achieving SSBs with higher efficiencies are to improve essentially the ionic conductivity and to reduce largely the interfacial resistance between SSEs and cathode materials, which would necessitate extremely high level of craftsmanship and high-pressure equipment. An alternative to higher-performance and lower-cost SSBs is additive manufacturing. Here, we report on an effective additive, MgF$_2$, which was used in synthesizing NASICONs, resulting in SSEs with fewer defects and higher performance. With an addition of mere 1 wt$\%$ MgF$_2$ additive, the total room-temperature ionic conductivity of the NASICON electrolyte reaches up to 2.03 mS cm$^{-1}$, improved up to $\sim$ 181.3$\%$, with an activation energy of 0.277 eV. Meanwhile, the stability of the Na plating/stripping behavior in symmetric cells increases from 236 to 654 h. We tried to reveal the microscopic origins of the higher ionic conductivity of MgF$_2$-doped NASICONs by comprehensive in-house characterizations. Multiferroics represent a class of advanced materials for promising applications and stand at the forefront of modern science for the special feature possessing both charge polar and magnetic order. Previous studies indicate that the family of RECrO3 (RE = rare earth) compounds is likely another rare candidate system holding both ferroelectricity and magnetism. However, many issues remain unsolved, casting hot disputes about whether RECrO3 is multiferroic or not. For example, an incompatibility exists between reported structural models and observed ferroelectric behaviors, and it is not easy to determine the spin canting degree. To address these questions, one key step is to grow single crystals because they can provide more reliable information than other forms of matter do. In this review, the parent and doped ferroelectric YCrO3 compounds are comprehensively reviewed based on scientific and patent literatures from 1954 to 2022. The materials syntheses with different methods, including poly-, nano-, and single-crystalline samples and thin films, are summarized. The structural, magnetic, ferroelectric and dielectric, optical, and chemical-pressure (on Y and Cr sites by doping) dependent chemical and physical properties and the corresponding phase diagrams, are discussed. Diverse (potential) applications, including anti-corrosion, magnetohydrodynamic electrode, catalyst, negative-temperature-coefficient thermistor, magnetic refrigeration, protective coating, and solid oxide fuel cell, are present. We have grown intermetallic ErPd$_2$Si$_2$ single crystals employing laser-diodes with the floating-zone method. The temperature-dependent crystallography was determined using synchrotron and in-house X-ray powder diffraction measurements from 20 to 500 K. The diffraction patterns fit well with the tetragonal $I$4/$mmm$ space group (No. 139) with two chemical formulas within one unit cell. Our synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction study shows that the refined lattice constants are $a$ = 4.10320(2) {\AA}, $c$ = 9.88393(5) {\AA} at 298 K and $a$ = 4.11737(2) {\AA}, $c$ = 9.88143(5) {\AA} at 500 K, resulting in the unit-cell volume $V$ = 166.408(1) {\AA}$^3$ (298 K) and 167.517(2) {\AA}$^3$ (500 K). In the whole studied temperature range, we did not find any structural phase transition. We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on intriguing magnetic properties of quasiferroelectric orthochromates. Large single crystals of the family of RECrO$_3$ (RE = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) compounds were successfully grown. Neutron Laue study indicates a good quality of the obtained single crystals. Applied magnetic-field and temperature dependent magnetization measurements reveal their intrinsic magnetic properties, especially the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperatures. Density functional theory studies of the electronic structures were carried out using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functional plus Hubbard $U$ method. Crystallographic information and magnetism were theoretically optimized systematically. When RE$^{3+}$ cations vary from Y$^{3+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ to Lu$^{3+}$ ions, the calculated $t$-$e$ orbital hybridization degree and N\'{e}el temperature behave similarly to the experimentally-determined AFM transition temperature with variation in cationic radius. We found that the $t$-$e$ hybridization is anisotropic, causing a magnetic anisotropy of Cr$^{3+}$ sublattices. This was evaluated with the nearest-neighbour $J_1$-$J_2$ model. Our research provides a picture of the electronic structures during the $t$-$e$ hybridization process while changing RE ions and sheds light on the nature of the weak ferromagnetism coexisting with predominated antiferromagnetism. We report on the crystallographic information such as lattice parameters, atomic positions, bond lengths and angles, and local crystalline distortion size and mode of single-crystal YCrO$_3$ compound by a high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction study. The data was collected at 120 K (below $T_\textrm{N} \sim$ 141.5 K), 300 K (within [$T_\textrm{N}$, $T_\textrm{C}$]), and 500 K (above $T_\textrm{C} \sim$ 473 K). Taking advantages of high intensity and brilliance of synchrotron X-rays, we are able to refine collected patterns with the noncentrosymmetric monoclinic structural model ($P12_11$, No. 4) that was proposed previously but detailed structural parameters have not determined yet. Meanwhile, we calculated patterns with the centrosymmetric orthorhombic space group (\emph{Pmnb}, No. 62) for a controlled study. Lattice constants \emph{a}, \emph{b}, and \emph{c} as well as unit-cell volume almost increase linearly upon warming. We observed more dispersive distributions of bond length and angle and local distortion strength with the $P12_11$ space group. This indicates that (i) The local distortion mode of Cr2O$_6$ at 120 K correlates the formation of the canted antiferromagnetic order by Cr1-Cr2 spin interactions mainly through intermediate of O3 and O4 ions. (ii) The strain-balanced Cr1-O3(O4) and Cr2-O5(O5) bonds as well as the local distortion modes of Cr1O$_6$ and Cr2O$_6$ octohedra at 300 K may be a microscopic origin of the previously-reported dielectric anomaly. Our study demonstrates that local crystalline distortion is a key factor for the formation of ferroelectric order and provides a complete set of crystallography for a full understanding of the interesting magnetic and quasi-ferroelectric properties of YCrO$_3$ compound., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

We have grown a YCrO$_3$ single crystal by the floating-zone method and studied its temperature-dependent crystalline structure and magnetization by X-ray powder diffraction and PPMS DynaCool measurements. All diffraction patterns were well indexed by an orthorhombic structure with space group of $Pbnm$ (No. 62). From 36 to 300 K, no structural phase transition occurs in the pulverized YCrO$_3$ single crystal. The antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature was determined as $T_\textrm{N} =$ 141.58(5) K by the magnetization versus temperature measurements. We found weak ferromagnetic behavior in the magnetic hysteresis loops below $T_\textrm{N}$. Especially, we demonstrated that the antiferromagnetism and weak ferromagnetism appear simutaniously upon cooling. The lattice parameters ($a$, $b$, $c$, and $V$) deviate downward from the Gr$\ddot{\textrm{u}}$neisen law, displaying an anisotropic magnetostriction effect. We extracted temperature variation of the local distortion parameter $\Delta$. Compared to the $\Delta$ value of Cr ions, Y, O1, and O2 ions show one order of magnitude larger $\Delta$ values indicative of much stronger local lattice distortions. As discussed in this chapter, we develop a mean-field mathematical method to calculate the ground states of antiferromagnets and better understand the applied magnetic-field induced exotic properties. Within antiferromagnetic materials competitive and cooperative interactions exist leading to substance extraordinary magnetic states. Our calculations predict that applying a magnetic field to antiferromagnets can switch it from one magnetic state to another. These include antiferromagnetic ground state, spin-flop transition, spin-flopped state, spin-flip transition and spin-flipped state. Our framework successfully demonstrates these phase changes. With this, a map of all equilibrium magnetic ground states, as well as the respective equilibrium phase conditions, are derived. The spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets are key prototype materials for studying frustrated magnetism. Three isostructural kagome antiferromagnets LnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$ (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy) have been successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method. LnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$ adopts space group $P\overline{3}m1$ and features the layered Cu-kagome lattice with lanthanide Ln$^{3+}$ cations sitting at the center of the hexagons. Although heavy lanthanides (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy) in LnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$ provide a large effective magnetic moment and ferromagnetic-like spin correlations compared to light-lanthanides (Nd, Sm, Eu) analogues, Cu-kagome holds an antiferromagnetically ordered state at around 17 K like YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$., Comment: Accepted by Chinese Physics B

We performed a comprehensive electron spin resonance, magnetization and heat capacity study on the field-induced magnetic phase transitions in the kagome antiferromagnet $\alpha-Cu_3Mg(OH)_6Br_2$. With the successful preparation of single crystals, we mapped out the magnetic phase diagrams under the $c$-axis and $ab$-plane directional magnetic fields $B$. For $B\|c$, the three-dimensional (3D) magnon Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) is evidenced by the power law scaling of the transition temperature, $T_c\propto (B_c-B)^{2/3}$. For $B\|ab$, the transition from the canted antiferromagetic (CAFM) state to the fully polarized (FP) state is a crossover rather than phase transition, and the characteristic temperature has a significant deviation from the 3D BEC scaling. The different behaviors of the field-induced magnetic transitions for $B\|c$ and $B\|ab$ could result from the Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya (DM) interaction with the DM vector along the $c$-axis, which preserves the $c$-axis directional spin rotation symmetry and breaks the spin rotation symmetry when $B\|ab$. The 3D magnon BEC scaling for $B\|c$ is immune to the off-stoichiometric disorder in our sample $\alpha-Cu_{3.26}Mg_{0.74}(OH)_6Br_2$. We studied the magnetic properties of YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Br$_2$[Br$_{1-x}$(OH)$_{x}$] ($x$ = 0.33), where Cu$^{2+}$ ions form two-dimensional kagome layers. There is no magnetic order down to 50 mK while the Curie-Weiss temperature is on the order of -100 K. At zero magnetic field, the low-temperature specific heat shows a $T^2$ dependence. Above 2 T, a linear temperature dependence term in specific heat emerges, and the value of $\gamma = C/T$ increases linearly with the field. Furthermore, the magnetic susceptibility tends to a constant value at $T = 0$. Our results suggest that the magnetic ground state of YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Br$_2$[Br$_{1-x}$(OH)$_{x}$] is consistent with a Dirac quantum-spin-liquid state with a linearly dispersing spinon strongly coupled to an emergent gauge field, which has long been theoretically proposed as a candidate ground state in the two-dimensional kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnetic system., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We study the magnetic properties of CaFeTi$_2$O$_6$ (CFTO) by high-field magnetization and specific heat measurements. While the magnetic susceptibility data yield a vanishingly small Curie-Weiss temperature, the magnetic moments are not fully polarized in magnetic field up to 60 T, which reveals a large spin exchange energy scale. Yet, the system shows no long range magnetic order but a spin-glass-like state below 5.5 K in zero field, indicating strong magnetic frustration in this system. Applying magnetic field gradually suppresses the spin-glass-like state and gives rise to a potential quantum spin liquid state whose low-temperature specific heat exhibits a $T^{1.6}$ power-law. Crucially, conventional mechanisms for frustration do not apply to this system as it possesses neither apparent geometrical frustration nor exchange frustration. We suggest that the orbital modulation of exchange interaction is likely the source of hidden frustration in CFTO, and its full characterization may open a new route in the quest for quantum spin liquids., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are an exotic state of matter that is subject to extensive research. However, the relationship between the ubiquitous disorder and the QSL behaviors is still unclear. Here, by performing comparative experimental studies on two kagom\'{e}-lattice QSL candidates, Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ and Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Mg$_2$O$_{14}$, which are isostructural to each other but with strong and weak structural disorder, respectively, we show unambiguously that the disorder can induce spin-liquid-like features. In particular, both compounds show dominant antiferromagnetic interactions with a Curie-Weiss temperature of -17.4 and -28.7 K for Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ and Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Mg$_2$O$_{14}$, respectively, but remain disordered down to about 0.05 K. Specific heat results suggest the presence of gapless magnetic excitations characterized by a residual linear term. Magnetic excitation spectra obtained by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) at low temperatures display broad continua. All these observations are consistent with those of a QSL. However, we find in Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ which has strong disorder resulting from the random mixing of the magnetic Tm$^{3+}$ and nonmagnetic Zn$^{2+}$, that the low-energy magnetic excitations observed in the specific heat and INS measurements are substantially enhanced, compared to those of Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Mg$_2$O$_{14}$ which has much less disorder. We believe that the effective spins of the Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the Zn$^{2+}$/Mg$^{2+}$ sites give rise to the low-energy magnetic excitations, and the amount of the random occupancy determines the excitation strength. The crystalline structure, magnetism, and magnetocaloric effect of a GdCrO$_3$ single crystal grown with the laser-diode-heated floating-zone technique have been studied. The GdCrO$_3$ single crystal crystallizes into an orthorhombic structure with the space group $Pmnb$ at room temperature. Upon cooling, under a magnetic field of 0.1 T, it undergoes a magnetic phase transition at $T_{\textrm{N-Cr}} =$ 169.28(2) K with Cr$^{3+}$ ions forming a canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure, accompanied by a weak ferromagnetism. Subsequently, a spin reorientation takes place at $T_{\textrm{SR}} =$ 5.18(2) K due to Gd$^{3+}$-Cr$^{3+}$ magnetic couplings. Finally, the long-range AFM order of Gd$^{3+}$ ions establishes at $T_{\textrm{N-Gd}} =$ 2.10(2) K. Taking into account the temperature-(in)dependent components of Cr$^{3+}$ moments, we obtained an ideal model for describing the paramagnetic behavior of Gd$^{3+}$ ions within 30--140 K. We observed a magnetic reversal (positive $\rightarrow$ negative $\rightarrow$ positive) at 50 Oe with a minimum centering around 162 K. In the studied temperature range of 1.8-300 K, there exists a strong competition between magnetic susceptibilities of Gd$^{3+}$ and Cr$^{3+}$ ions, leading to puzzling magnetic phenomena. We have built the magnetic-field-dependent phase diagrams of $T_{\textrm{N-Gd}}$, $T_{\textrm{SR}}$, and $T_{\textrm{N-Cr}}$, shedding light on the nature of the intriguing magnetism. We have grown La$_{1.37}$Sr$_{1.63}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ single crystals with a laser-diode-heated floating-zone furnace and studied the crystallinity, structure, and magnetoresistance (MR) effect by in-house X-ray Laue diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction, and resistance measurements. The La$_{1.37}$Sr$_{1.63}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ single crystal crystallizes into a tetragonal structure with space group \emph{I}4{/}\emph{mmm} at room temperature. At 0 T, the maximum resistance centers around $\sim$166.9 K. Below $\sim$35.8 K, it displays an insulating character with an increase in resistance upon cooling. An applied magnetic field of \emph{B}~=~7~T strongly suppresses the resistance indicative of a negative MR effect. The minimum MR value equals $-$91.23\% at 7 T and 128.7 K. The magnetic-field-dependent resistance shows distinct features at 1.67, 140, and 322 K, from which we calculated the corresponding MR values. At 14 T and 140 K, the colossal negative MR value is down to $-$94.04(5)\%. We have studied a nearly stoichiometric insulating Y$_{0.97(2)}$Cr$_{0.98(2)}$O$_{3.00(2)}$ single crystal by performing measurements of magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction. Albeit that the YCrO$_3$ compound behaviors like a soft ferromagnet with a coersive force of $\sim$ 0.05 T, there exist strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between Cr$^{3+}$ spins due to a strongly negative paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature, i.e., -433.2(6) K. The coexistence of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism may indicate a canted AFM structure. The AFM phase transition occurs at $T_\textrm{N} =$ 141.5(1) K, which increases to $T_\textrm{N}$(5T) = 144.5(1) K at 5 T. Within the accuracy of the present neuron-diffraction studies, we determine a G-type AFM structure with a propagation vector \textbf{k} = (1 1 0) and Cr$^{3+}$ spin directions along the crystallographic \emph{c} axis of the orthorhombic structure with space group \emph{Pnma} below $T_\textrm{N}$. At 12 K, the refined moment size is 2.45(6) $\mu_\textrm{B}$, $\sim$ 82\% of the theoretical saturation value 3 $\mu_\textrm{B}$. The Cr$^{3+}$ spin interactions are probably two-dimensional Ising like within the reciprocal (1 1 0) scattering plane. Below $T_\textrm{N}$, the lattice configuration (\emph{a}, \emph{b}, \emph{c}, and \emph{V}) deviates largely downward from the Gr$\ddot{\textrm{u}}$neisen law, displaying an anisotropic magnetostriction effect and a magnetoelastic effect. Especially, the sample contraction upon cooling is enhanced below the AFM transition temperature. There is evidence to suggest that the actual crystalline symmetry of YCrO$_3$ compound is probably lower than the currently assumed one. Additionally, we compared the $t_{2\textrm{g}}$ YCrO$_3$ and the $e_\textrm{g}$ La$_{7/8}$Sr$_{1/8}$MnO$_3$ single crystals for a further understanding of the reason for the possible symmetry lowering., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures

We report on single-crystal growths of the SrTb$_2$O$_4$ compound by a super-necking technique with a laser-floating-zone furnace and study the stoichiometry, growth mode, and structural and magnetic properties by scanning electronic microscopy, neutron Laue, X-ray powder diffraction, and the physical property measurement system. We optimized the growth parameters, mainly the growth speed, atmosphere, and the addition of a Tb$_4$O$_7$ raw material. Neutron Laue diffraction displays the characteristic feature of a single crystal. Our study reveals an atomic ratio of Sr:Tb $ = 0.97(2){:}2.00(1)$ and a possible layer by layer crystal growth mode. Our X-ray powder diffraction study determines the crystal structure, lattice constants and atomic positions. The paramagnetic (PM) Curie--Weiss (CW) temperature $\theta_{\texttt{CW}} =$ 5.00(4) K, and the effective PM moment $M^{\texttt{eff}}_{\texttt{mea}} =$ 10.97(1) $\mu_\texttt{B}$ per Tb$^{3+}$ ion. The data of magnetization versus temperature can be divided into three regimes, showing a coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions. This probably leads to the magnetic frustration in the SrTb$_2$O$_4$ compound. The magnetization at 2 K and 14 T originates from both the Tb1 and Tb2 sites and is strongly frustrated with an expected saturation field at $\sim$41.5 T, displaying an intricate phase diagram with three ranges., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures

Magnetization measurements and time-of-flight neutron powder-diffraction studies on the high-temperature (300--980 K) magnetism and crystal structure (321--1200 K) of a pulverized YCrO$_3$ single crystal have been performed. Temperature-dependent inverse magnetic susceptibility coincides with a piecewise linear function with five regimes, with which we fit a Curie-Weiss law and calculate the frustration factor $f$. The fit results indicate a formation of magnetic polarons between 300 and 540 K and a very strong magnetic frustration. By including one factor $\eta$ that represents the degree of spin interactions into the Brillouin function, we can fit well the applied-magnetic-field dependence of magnetization. No structural phase transition was observed from 321 to 1200 K. The average thermal expansions of lattice configurations (\emph{a}, \emph{b}, \emph{c}, and \emph{V}) obey well the Gr$\ddot{\textrm{u}}$neisen approximations with an anomaly appearing around 900 K, implying an isosymmetric structural phase transition, and display an anisotropic character along the crystallographic \emph{a}, \emph{b}, and \emph{c} axes with the incompressibility $K^a_0 > K^c_0 > K^b_0$. It is interesting to find that at 321 K, the local distortion size $\Delta$(O2) $\approx$ 1.96$\Delta$(O1) $\approx$ 4.32$\Delta$(Y) $\approx$ 293.89$\Delta$(Cr). Based on the refined Y-O and Cr-O bond lengths, we deduce the local distortion environments and modes of Y, Cr, O1, and O2 ions. Especially, the Y and O2 ions display obvious atomic displacement and charge subduction, which may shed light on the dielectric property of the YCrO$_3$ compound. Additionally, by comparing Kramers Mn$^{3+}$ with non-Kramers Cr$^{3+}$ ions, it is noted that being a Kramers or non-Kramers ion can strongly affect the local distortion size, whereas, it may not be able to change the detailed distortion mode., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures
