4. A new approach for rain gush formation associated with ionic wind

Abstract

Based upon experimental observation in the laboratory, we propose that ionic wind from corona discharge inside a thundercloud would play an important role in producing a rain gush. A cyclic chain of events inside a super-saturated environment in a thundercloud is proposed, each event enhancing the successive ones until lightning occurs. These successive events are collision between snowflakes and rimers, charge separation, corona discharge, avalanche ionization, ionic wind originating from the positively and negatively charged masses of cloud, vortex motion and turbulence when mixed with the updraft, more collision, more charge separation, stronger corona discharge, and so on. Meanwhile, avalanche ionization would produce more CCN (cloud condensation nuclei) resulting in more precipitation and hence rimers formation in the super-saturated environment. More collision in the buoyant turbulence would lead to more fusion of droplets and the formation of larger rimers. The cyclic processes would repeat themselves until the electric field between the two oppositely charged masses of cloud was strong enough to induce a breakdown. The latter would create a sudden short circuit between the two charged masses of cloud neutralizing the charges. There would be no more ionic wind, hence, much less buoyant turbulence. The updraft alone would not be sufficiently strong to support larger rimers which would fall down 'suddenly' to the earth surface as a rain gush.

Abstract

To solve the problem of slow simulation calculation of magnetic field in oil-immersed transformers, this paper proposes a fast calculation method based on the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and Kriging response surface method. First, based on the POD reduction method, the discrete equation of the magnetic field is reduced to obtain the modal coefficient matrix. Then, taking the transformer load rate as an important parameter, the sample space is determined, and the corresponding snapshot matrix of the sample space is obtained through COMSOL software. Based on the Kriging function, a response function for the load rate and modal coefficients is constructed, and combined with the reduced mode, the winding magnetic field is quickly reconstructed. Finally, to verify the effectiveness of the method, four additional load conditions were selected to analyze the deviation between the reduced-order model and the full-order model from the perspective of computational accuracy and efficiency. The results show that, in terms of computational accuracy, the maximum relative error between the reduced-order model and the simulation model in the verification points is only 1.045%, while the rest of the points are below 1%. In terms of computational efficiency, the method proposed in this article improves the computational efficiency to 4743 times that of the full-order model. It only takes 0.9 s to calculate the results corresponding to a certain operating condition, which can achieve fast calculation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8. Firing of hippocampal neurogliaform cells induces suppression of synaptic inhibition

Abstract

The hippocampus contains more than 21 types of inhibitory interneurons that express different proteins and innervate different sub-domains of pyramidal cells to regulate the spatiotemporal integration of excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) and to define temporal windows for spiking. Neurogliaform cells (NGFCs), form synapses on the distal tufts of pyramidal cell apical dendrites alongside excitatory inputs from the entorhinal cortex. NGFCs express neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), are often synaptically coupled, and fire rhythmically during theta oscillations in vivo. In this thesis, I describe a novel form of synaptic communication between these interneuron types, hereafter referred to as the firing induced suppression of inhibition (FSI). Specifically, I found that when a theta-associated activity patterns were evoked in NGFCs from rodent hippocampal slices, the cells exhibited a transient reduction in unitary IPSP amplitude. My data suggest that FSI requires the backpropagation of action potentials, calcium influx through L-type calcium channels, nNOS activity within the dendrites of interneurons, and the activation of NO-sensitive guanylyl cyclase (NOsGC) receptors that are present on presynaptic terminals. My results also demonstrate the physiological impact of this phenomenon by showing that when FSI occurs, the strength of incoming excitatory postsynaptic potentials onto NGFCs are transiently sharpened. Specifically, FSI indirectly increased the amplitude of EPSPs. Thus FSI may enhance spatial and temporal summation of excitatory inputs to NGFCs and regulate their inhibition of pyramidal cells.

Abstract

We report on a systematic study of the laser polarization effect on a femtosecond laser filamentation in air. By changing the laser’s ellipticity from linear polarization to circular polarization, the onset position of laser filament formation becomes farther from the focusing optics, the filament length is shorter, and less laser energy is deposited. The laser polarization effect on air filaments is supported by a simulation and analysis of the polarization-dependent critical power and ionization rates in air.
