Introduction: This meta-analysis examined the relationship between age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and depression in older adults, and further explored whether this relationship is moderated by age and gender. Methods: We searched in 4 English databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. Ultimately, we identified 9 studies, involving 3 cohort studies and 6 cross-sectional studies. We used Hedges' g as the effect size, and all pooled analyses were performed using random-effects models. Results: ARHL patients had higher depressive symptom scores than non-ARHL older adults (g = 0.52). When divided into subgroups based on study type, a large effect size was demonstrated in the cross-sectional study group (g = 0.68) and was not statistically different in the cohort study group (g = 0.06). Meta-regression results showed that the effect size of depression in older adults with ARHL was significantly associated with the percentage of females (t = 5.97, p = 0.000) and not significantly associated with age (t = 0.94, p = 0.364). Conclusions: Patients with ARHL are more likely to be depressed than older adults with normal hearing, and this relationship is influenced by the gender of the patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The efficacy of Calorie Restriction (CR) in enhancing cognition, promoting healthy aging, and extending lifespan is well‐established. Yet, it remains unclear whether the apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype, a known modifier for aging and age‐related disorders, influences the beneficial effects of CR in countering aging. Methods: To investigate this question, we utilized humanized APOE mouse models, which express APOE2, APOE3, or APOE4 alleles systematically (refer to as E2, E3, and E4 mice). These mice were subjected to either ad libitum (AL) feeding or 30% CR feeding, starting from 12 months and continuing up to 20 months of age (N = 11‐20/ genotype /group, mixed sex). We monitored energy expenditure using the Comprehensive Laboratory Animal Monitoring System (CLAMS). Additionally, we evaluated anxiety levels and memory capabilities through various behavioral tests. Finally, we collected brain, blood, and feces samples for transcriptomic, lipidomic, and microbiomic analyses. Results: CLAMS measurements showed that CR significantly decreased the metabolic rate in E3 and E4 mice, but not E2 mice, during the non‐feeding period of the CR group, compared to the AL group. Furthermore, CR reduced anxiety and enhanced associative memory in E3 and E4 mice relative to the AL group. Brain transcriptomics revealed that CR upregulated the cholesterol synthesis pathway, potentially improving myelination‐related pathways in E3 and E4 mice. This finding was further validated by the increased staining intensity of myelin basic protein (MBP) observed in E3 and E4 mice from an independent cohort. In contrast, these effects were not pronounced in E2 mice. Additionally, while CR's impact on the brain lipid profile was minor across all APOE genotypes, it significantly altered blood lipid profile of E2 mice, with minimal changes observed in E3 and E4 mice. Finally, in microbiomics, CR led to notable changes in the abundance of Bifidobacterium species in E3 and E4 mice and Lactobacillus species in E2 mice. Conclusions: Our study highlights the role of APOE genotypes in modulating the diverse effects of CR on cognition, brain transcriptomics, lipid metabolism, and the microbiome, providing a crucial foundation for considering APOE genotypes in developing prevention strategies for aging and age‐related disorders. Bone tissue engineering is a promising approach for tackling clinical challenges. Osteoprogenitor cells, osteogenic factors, and osteoinductive/osteoconductive scaffolds are employed in bone tissue engineering. However, scaffold materials remain limited due to their source, low biocompatibility, and so on. In this study, a composite hydrogel scaffold composed of hydroxyapatite (HA) and sodium alginate (SA) was manufactured using three‐dimensional printing. Naringin (NG) and calcitonin‐gene‐related peptide (CGRP) were used as osteogenic factors in the fabrication of drug‐loaded scaffolds. Investigation using animal experiments, as well as scanning electron microscopy, cell counting kit‐8 testing, alkaline phosphatase staining, and alizarin red‐D staining of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell culture showed that the three scaffolds displayed similar physicochemical properties and that the HA/SA/NG and HA/SA/CGRP scaffolds displayed better osteogenesis than that of the HA/SA scaffold. Thus, the HA/SA scaffold could be a biocompatible material with potential applications in bone regeneration. Self-glazed zirconia has been recently developed and widely used in crowns owing to its high strength, low wear on opposite teeth, and aesthetic appearance. This clinical study was to explore the application prospect of the bridge restoration made by self-glazed zirconia with a digital process. The results demonstrated that self-glazed zirconia could meet both the aesthetics and functional requirements of anterior and molar teeth in a time-saving and efficient manner. This clinical case report describes the fabrication of monolithic self-glazed zirconia prostheses via a digital workflow, for full-arch rehabilitation in a patient with a severely worn dentition. Prostheses composed of self-glazed zirconia are less prone to chipping, and have a lower risk of progressive wear of the opposing natural teeth. The use of a digital workflow not only ensures a higher degree of precision in the fabrication of self-glazed zirconia prostheses, but it also greatly improves patient comfort, and reduces the clinical chairside time required for adjustments. Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL), as an otologic emergency, is commonly encountered and its prevalence has been climbing every year recently. To our knowledge, the prognosis of middle-aged and elderly patients is worse than that of young patients. Previous researches mainly focused on the adult population, which was considered as prognostic models who performed hearing recovery in ISSNHL. However, few studies regarding the middle-aged and elderly population who are regarded as prognostic models have been reported. Therefore, we aim to construct and validate a nomogram-based prognostic prediction model, which can provide a reference for the prognostic assessment in the middle-aged and elderly patients with ISSNHL. A total of 371 middle-aged and elderly ISSNHL patients who were admitted to the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Yanbian Hospital, Yanbian University, from April 2018 to April 2023 were enrolled in the study. All subjects were randomly divided into two groups including training group (n = 263) and validation group (n = 108). Lasso regression and multi-factor logistic regression were jointly utilized to screen out prognosis-related independent risk factors and establish a nomogram-based risk prediction model. The accuracy and clinical application value of the model were evaluated by combining the Bootstrapping method and k-fold cross-validation, plotting the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calculating the area under the ROC curve (AUC), plotting the decision curve analysis (DCA), and the calibrating curve. We used the method of lasso regression combined with multivariate logistic regression and finally screened out eight predictors (including age, number of affected ears, degree of hearing loss, type of hearing curve, duration of disease, presence of vertigo, diabetes, and lacunar cerebral infarction) that were included into the nomogram. The C-index were 0.823 [95% CI (0.725, 0.921)] and 0.851 [95% CI (0.701, 1.000)], and the AUC values were 0.812 and 0.823 for the training and validation groups, respectively. The calibration curve for the validation group was approximately conformed to that for the modeling group, indicating favorable model calibration. The DCA results revealed the modeling group (3%-86%) and the validation group (2%-92%) showed significant net clinical benefit under the majority of thresholds. This study developed and validated a nomogram-based prognostic prediction model which based on the eight independent risk factors mentioned above. Background: The development of resistance to oxaliplatin is a multifaceted process, often involving modifications in drug transport, DNA repair mechanisms, and the ability of cells to evade drug-induced apoptosis., Objective: To evaluate whether knocking down RFC3 promotes the sensitivity of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells to oxaliplatin, potentially offering a new approach to combat drug resistance., Methods: siRNA-mediated knockdown of RFC3 was employed in colorectal cancer cell lines to assess the impact on oxaliplatin responsiveness. Cell viability assays, clonogenic survival assays, and flow cytometry were conducted to evaluate the effects on cell growth and apoptosis. Additionally, immunoblot analysis was used to scrutinize modifications in the expression of pivotal protein expression in the Wnt/β-catenin/GPX4 axis., Results: RFC3 is highly expressed in CRC tissues and associated with prognosis. Knocking down RFC3 enhances the sensitivity of CRC cells to oxaliplatin. Additionally, the reduction of RFC3 promotes the susceptibility of chemoresistant tumor cells to oxaliplatin by inducing ferroptosis.
