We measured the ablative margin (AM) by MRI–MRI fusion imaging based on pre-ablation and post-ablation images. Then, we followed up their LPT and verified the optimal AM. Risk factors related to LTP were explored through Cox regression models, the nomogram was developed to predict the LTP risk base on the risk factors, and subsequently validated. The predictive performance and discrimination were assessed and compared with conventional indices.Results: The median follow-up was 19.9 months (95% CI 18.0– 21.8) for the entire cohort. The results revealed that the tumor size (HR: 2.16; 95% CI 1.25– 3.72; P = 0.003) and AM (HR: 0.72; 95% CI, 0.61– 0.85; P < 0.001) were independent prognostic factors for LTP. The AM had a pronounced nonlinear impact on LTP, and a cut-off value of 5-mm was optimal. We developed and validated an LTP predictive model based on the linear tumor size and nonlinear AM. The model showed good predictive accuracy and discrimination (training set, concordance index [C-index] of 0.751; validation set, C-index of 0.756) and outperformed other conventional indices.Conclusion: The 5-mm AM is recommended for the best IPTA candidates with single HCC (diameter ≤ 3 cm). Nevertheless, the prognostic value of PDW in gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) remains unknown. We aimed to explore the correlation between PDW and prognosis in patients with GBC.Methods: A total of 303 patients with GBC who underwent curative surgery between January 2005 and February 2017 were enrolled. The relationship between PDW and clinicopathological features was analyzed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to identify the optimal cutoff value of PDW. The overall survival (OS) rate was estimated by Kaplan–Meier method. Meanwhile, univariable and multivariable Cox regression model were used to evaluate the risk factors for OS.Results: There was significant correlation between elevated PDW and AJCC stage. In addition, survival analysis revealed that the patients with PDW> 14.95 have a worse prognosis than patients with PDW 14.95 (P < 0.001). The multivariable Cox regression model analysis demonstrated that PDW was an independent prognostic factor in GBC patients (hazard ratio=1.976, 95% confidence interval:1.474– 2.650, P< 0.001).Conclusion: Elevated PDW can predict poor prognosis in GBC patients, and further studies are needed to verify the reliability and clarify the exact molecular mechanistic of PDW in GBC.Keywords: gallbladder carcinoma, platelet distribution width, prognosis

We carried out this study to analyze the risk factors contributing to ER and explored the prognostic factors after curative resection for pCCA.Patients and Methods: A total of 335 consecutive pCCA patients were retrospectively analyzed. Risk factors contributing to ER were evaluated using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Prognostic factors of the ER group were determined by univariate and multivariate Cox regression models. The overall survival (OS) rate was calculated using the Kaplan–Meier method. The Log rank test was used for OS comparison.Results: Of the 335 cases, 258 patients (77.0%) developed tumor recurrence, 136 patients (40.6%) developed ER, and 122 patients (36.4%) developed late recurrence (LR) postoperatively. The median OS of the ER and LR groups was 15 months and 36 months, respectively (P< 0.001). The multivariate analysis revealed that poor pathological differentiation (P=0.006; moderate vs well, odds ratio [OR]=2.162, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.753– 6.208, P=0.152; poor vs well, OR=4.839, 95% CI 1.544– 15.170, P=0.007), perineural invasion (OR=4.797, 95% CI 1.586– 14.510, P=0.005), and high levels of preoperative carbohydrate antigen 19– 9 (CA19-9) (OR=2.205, 95% CI 1.208– 4.026, P=0.010) were independent risk factors of developing ER after resection. Adjuvant chemotherapy (HR=0.383, 95% CI 0.154– 0.953, P=0.039) remained as the independent protective factor of OS in patients with ER.Conclusion: It is recommended that patients with poorly differentiated tumors, presence of perineural invasion, and high levels of preoperative CA19-9 receive closer follow-up and adjuvant chemotherapy following surgery.Keywords: perihilar cholangiocarcinoma, adjuvant chemotherapy, overall survival, curative-intent resection, early recurrence

Materials and methods: Patients were categorized into the following three groups: patients with pure TC of the breast (the PTC group), patients with TC and carcinoma in situ of the breast (the TC-CIS group), and patients with TC and other invasive carcinomas of the breast (the TC-IC group). We compared the clinicopathologic characteristics and treatment outcomes of the three groups. The primary end point of this study was breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS). Secondary end points included distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) and locoregional recurrence (LRR). Results: A total of 68 patients were included in this study, including 31 patients in the PTC group, 12 in the TC-CIS group, and 25 in the TC-IC group. Our data showed that PTC and TC-CIS were more likely to be smaller in size (P=0.014) and had substantially less nodal involvement (P=0.019), compared with TC-IC. The median follow-up time was 64.3 months (range, 3.78–223.2 months) for all patients. No locoregional relapse was observed in any group during the follow-up period. The 10-year BCSS of the PTC, TC-CIS, and TC-IC groups was 100%, 100%, and 95.2%, respectively, and the 10-year DMFS was 92.3%, 100%, and 96.0%, respectively. There was no significant difference in terms of BCSS (P=0.53) or DMFS (P=0.84) between the three groups. Conclusion: This study indicates that both the pure type and mixed type of TC of the breast show very low LRR and distant metastasis rate and have excellent survival. The TC-IC group is likely to show good prognosis similar to the PTC group. Further clinical trials with larger sample sizes as well as molecular and genetic studies are warranted. In this study, we assessed the long-term survival effect of the interval between surgery and PMRT in locally advanced breast cancer treated with mastectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy.Methods: In this retrospective study, we included women with locally advanced breast cancer who underwent adjuvant chemotherapy and PMRT after mastectomy between 1999 and 2007. Based on the interval between surgery and PMRT, the patients were classified into three groups: Group 1 (≤4 vs >4 months), Group 2 (≤5 vs >5 months), and Group 3 (≤6 vs >6 months). Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to determine the prognostic factors of survival outcomes.Results: A total of 340 women were included in this study, and the median follow-up duration was 79.8 months. The median surgery–PMRT interval was 5 months. The surgery–PMRT interval including Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3 was not significantly associated with locoregional recurrence-free survival, distant metastasis-free survival, disease-free survival, and overall survival. In addition, in the subgroup analysis of the effect of surgery–PMRT interval on survival outcomes according to various clinicopathologic factors, the surgery–PMRT interval was also not associated with survival outcomes in different age groups, tumor stage, and breast cancer subtypes.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the delay in the start of PMRT in locally advanced breast cancer does not increase the likelihood of locoregional recurrence, distant metastasis, and death. Hence, we determined the clinical value of PORT in IMPC patients. Patients and methods: We assessed clinicopathological factors extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (2004–2013). Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regressions were performed to assess the independent prognostic factors on breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) and overall survival (OS). Results: Of the 881 study patients, 444 (50.4%) and 437 (49.6%) underwent breast-conserving surgery (BCS) and mastectomy (MAST), respectively, of whom 357 (80.4%) and 153 (35.0%) underwent PORT, respectively. Patients with young age, large tumor size, or advanced nodal stage were more likely to undergo MAST and PORT compared with MAST alone. Patients with progesterone receptor-positive disease were more likely to receive BCS and PORT compared with BCS alone. The 5-year BCSS and OS were 95.7% and 90.9%, respectively. On multivariate analyses, tumor size, histological grade, and estrogen receptor status were independent predictors of BCSS and OS. The types of surgical procedures (MAST vs. BCS) were not an independent predictor of survival outcomes. Patients who underwent MAST with or without PORT had similar BCSS and OS in the multivariate analyses. Those who underwent BCS plus PORT did not have better BCSS and OS than those who underwent BCS alone. In the low-, intermediate-, and high-risk groups, PORT was not associated with better BCSS and OS than non-PORT groups in patients who received BCS or MAST. Conclusion: IMPC has favorable BCSS and OS. Regardless of the types of surgical procedures (MAST or BCS), PORT groups were not inferior to non-PORT groups on BCSS and OS. Abstract

Tumor microenvironment (TME) plays an active role in promoting tumor progression. To further understand the communication between TME and tumor cells, this study aimed at investigating the involvement of CD44, a type I cell surface receptor, in the crosstalk between tumor cells and TME. We have previously shown that chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan serglycin (SRGN), a CD44-interacting factor, was preferentially secreted by cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) for promoting tumor growth in breast cancer patients. In this study, we show that SRGN is overexpressed in primary non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs), by both carcinoma and stromal cells. Using gain-of-function and loss-of-function approaches, we show that SRGN promotes NSCLC cell migration and invasion as well as colonization in the lung and liver in a CD44-dependent manner. SRGN induces lung cancer cell stemness, as demonstrated by its ability to enhance NSCLC cell sphere formation via Nanog induction, accompanied with increased chemoresistance and anoikis-resistance. SRGN promotes epithelial-mesenchymal transition by enhancing vimentin expression via CD44/NF-κB/claudin-1 (CLDN1) axis. In support, CLDN1 and SRGN expression are tightly linked together in primary NSCLC. Most importantly, increased expression of SRGN and/or CLDN1 predicts poor prognosis in primary lung adenocarcinomas. In summary, we demonstrate that SRGN secreted by tumor cells and stromal components in the TME promotes malignant phenotypes through interacting with tumor cell receptor CD44, suggesting that a combined therapy targeting both CD44 and its ligands in the TME may be an attractive approach for cancer therapy.

The prognostic impact of LNR with respect to cause-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) was analyzed.Results: A total of 118 patients with SCCC were identified. The median follow-up was 30.5months. All these patients were treated with cancer-directed surgery and lymphadenectomy. Sixty (50.8%) patients had nodal metastases. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of clinical data for 39 patients with ISLM from breast cancer without distant metastasis at diagnosis. Combined modality therapy, consisting of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgery, and adjuvant chemotherapy with or without adjuvant radiotherapy, was offered to the patients. Results: The patients in this study accounted for 1% of all breast cancer patients treated during the same time period. The median follow-up was 35 months. The 5-year locoregional recurrence-free survival, distant metastasis-free survival, disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS) were 57.3%, 42.3%, 34.4%, and 46.2%, respectively. Twenty-three patients received postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy. However, there was no significant difference in the 3- and 5-year locoregional recurrence-free survival (P=0.693), ISLM-free recurrence (P=0.964), distant metastasis-free survival (P=0.964), DFS (P=0.234), and OS (P=0.329) rates between the groups of patients who received or did not receive adjuvant radiotherapy (P=0.840). No significant difference in the 3-year locoregional control rate (P=0.900) was found between patients who were treated with adjuvant radiotherapy at ≤50 Gy and >50 Gy. Univariate analysis showed that clinical tumor size stage and age were prognostic factors that impacted DFS and OS. Conclusion: Combined modality treatment may achieve satisfactory efficacy in Chinese women with ISLM from breast cancer without distant metastasis at the time of diagnosis, suggesting that ISLM might be considered a curable locoregional disease. Abstract

WOS: 000389144400002, By analyzing 2.93 fb(-1) data collected at the center-of-mass energy root s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute branching fraction of the semileptonic decay D+ -> (K) over bar (0)e(+)nu(e) to be B(D (+) -> (K) over bar (0)e(+)nu(e)) = (8.59 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.21)% using (K) over bar (0) -> K-S(0) -> pi(0) pi(0), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Abstract

WOS: 000368783600015, By analyzing a data set of 2.92 fb(-1) of e(+) e(-) collision data taken at root s = 3.773 GeVand 106.41 x 10(6) psi(3686) decays taken at root s = 3.686 GeVwith the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the branching fraction and the partial decay width for psi(3770)->gamma chi c0 to be B(psi(3770)->gamma chi c0) = (6.88 +/- 0.28 +/- 0.67) x 10(-3) and Gamma[psi(3770)->gamma chi c0] = (187 +/- 8 +/- 19) keV, respectively. Abstract

WOS: 000368783600087, We extract the e(+) e(-) -> pi(+) pi(-) cross section in the energy range between 600 and 900 MeV, exploiting the method of initial state radiation. A data set with an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb(-1) taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider is used. The cross section is measured with a systematic uncertainty of 0.9%. We extract the pion form factor vertical bar F pi vertical bar(2) as well as the contribution of the measured cross section to the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to (g - 2)(mu). We find this value to be a(mu)(pi pi,LO) (600-900 MeV) = (368.2 +/- 2.5(stat)+/- 3.3(sys)).10(-10), which is between the corresponding values using the BaBar or KLOE data. (C) 2015 The Authors. 24. Two novel subjective logic-based in-network data processing schemes in wireless sensor networks

Abstract

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of connected low-cost and small-size sensor nodes. The sensor nodes are characterized by various limitations, such as energy availability, processing power, and storage capacity. Typically, nodes collect data from an environment and transmit the raw or processed data to a sink. However, the collected data contains often redundant information. An in-network processing scheme attempts to eliminate or reduce such redundancy in sensed data. In this paper, we propose two in-network data processing schemes for WSNs, which are built based on a lightweight algebra for data processing. The schemes bring also benefits like decreased network traffic load and increased reliability for a network. For trust generation, we employ subjective logic based calculations to mitigate trust fluctuations caused by internal and external factors. Numerical results based on synthetic data reveal the effectiveness and preciseness of our proposed schemes.

28. A novel approach to trust management in unattended wireless sensor networks

Abstract

Unattended Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) are characterized by long periods of disconnected operation and fixed or irregular intervals between sink visits. The absence of an online trusted third party implies that existing WSN trust management schemes are not applicable to UWSNs. In this paper, we propose a trust management scheme for UWSNs to provide efficient and robust trust data storage and trust generation. For trust data storage, we employ a geographic hash table to identify storage nodes and to significantly decrease storage cost. We use subjective logic based consensus techniques to mitigate trust fluctuations caused by environmental factors. We exploit a set of trust similarity functions to detect trust outliers and to sustain trust pollution attacks. We demonstrate, through extensive analyses and simulations, that the proposed scheme is efficient, robust and scalable. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Abstract

Objective: The effect of iron status in pregnant women on expression of ferritin receptor in placental microvilli membrane at mid-term gestation was investigated. Design: Ferritin receptor binding sites and dissociation constants (Kd) were determined in specimens of placental microvilli from 30 pregnant women at mid-term gestation and six women at term-delivery. Results: The ferritin receptor binding sites in the placental microvilli membrane in pregnant women with mild iron deficiency and moderate iron deficiency anemia were significantly higher then those in pregnant women with normal iron status. However, no significant difference was found between pregnant women with severe iron deficiency anemia and with normal measurements. No significant differences of Kd values were detected between pregnant women with normal iron status and those with iron-deficiency. Data also revealed that the ferritin receptor binding sites in placental microvilli membrane and Kd values at mid-term gestation did not differ significantly from those at term gestation. Conclusion: Lower iron status in pregnant women could lead to an increase in expression of ferritin receptor in placental microvilli membrane at mid-term gestation while the dissociation constant of ferritin receptor remains unchanged. This implies that the regulation of maternal–fetal iron homeostasis via the ferritin receptor-mediated pathway is achieved by changes in the numbers of ferritin receptors rather then binding properties. Abstract

© 2021 The Authors., Aims: Understanding fine-grain diversity patterns across large spatial extents is fundamental for macroecological research and biodiversity conservation. Using the GrassPlot database, we provide benchmarks of fine-grain richness values of Palaearctic open habitats for vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and complete vegetation (i.e., the sum of the former three groups). Location: Palaearctic biogeographic realm. Methods: We used 126,524 plots of eight standard grain sizes from the GrassPlot database: 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 m and calculated the mean richness and standard deviations, as well as maximum, minimum, median, and first and third quartiles for each combination of grain size, taxonomic group, biome, region, vegetation type and phytosociological class. Results: Patterns of plant diversity in vegetation types and biomes differ across grain sizes and taxonomic groups. Overall, secondary (mostly semi-natural) grasslands and natural grasslands are the richest vegetation type. The open-access file ”GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks” and the web tool “GrassPlot Diversity Explorer” are now available online (https://edgg.org/databases/GrasslandDiversityExplorer) and provide more insights into species richness patterns in the Palaearctic open habitats. Conclusions: The GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks provide high-quality data on species richness in open habitat types across the Palaearctic. These benchmark data can be used in vegetation ecology, macroecology, biodiversity conservation and data quality checking. Abstract

The gene products involved in mammalian mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) maintenance and organization remain largely unknown. We report here a novel mitochondrial protein, Twinkle, with structural similarity to phage T7 gene 4 primase/helicase and other hexameric ring helicases. Twinkle colocalizes with mtDNA in mitochondrial nucleoids. Screening of the gene encoding Twinkle in individuals with autosomal dominant progressive external ophthalmoplegia (adPEO), associated with multiple mtDNA deletions, identified 11 different coding-region mutations co-segregating with the disorder in 12 adPEO pedigrees of various ethnic origins. The mutations cluster in a region of the protein proposed to be involved in subunit interactions. The function of Twinkle is inferred to be critical for lifetime maintenance of human mtDNA integrity.

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the prognosis and safety of ripretinib in the treatment of patients with advanced gastrointestinal mesenchymal stromal tumors (GISTs) and to analyze the relationship between blood concentrations of this drug and prognosis. Methods: In this retrospective study, we investigated the effects of ripretinib in patients with advanced GISTs. The inclusion criteria comprised: (1) daily oral administration of ripretinib scheduled; and (2) uninterrupted treatment for at least 1month, with a stable and relatively fixed daily dosage maintained for a minimum of 2 weeks. Exclusion criteria comprised concurrent use of other tyrosine kinase inhibitors and presence of significant organ dysfunction. We retrospectively identified 79 patients with advanced GISTs who had received ripretinib across seven medical centers, namely Jiangsu Provincial Hospital, Jiangsu Cancer Hospital, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing University, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital of Zhejiang University, Renji Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and the General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army, from 1 June 2021 to 31 March 2024. The cohort included 48 men and 31 women, 19 of whom had received ripretinib as second-line, 13 as third-line, and 47 as fourth-line therapy. Two peripheral venous blood samples were obtained from each participant and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry used to determine peak (Cmax) and trough (Cmin) concentrations of ripretinib. Machine learning methodologies, specifically the K-nearest neighbor algorithm combined with the Gridsearch CV strategy, were employed to establish the threshold for Cmin. We analyzed adverse reactions, treatment efficacy, median progression-free survival (mPFS), and the relationship between drug blood concentration and selected clinical parameters. Results: In the entire cohort, the Cmin and Cmax of ripretinib were 467 ± 360 μg/L and 986 ± 493 μg/L, respectively. Notably, female patients and individuals in the high-dose group exhibited significantly higher values for both Cmin and Cmax (both P <0.05). However, variations in drug concentrations associated with the line of ripretinib therapy, treatment efficacy, disease progression, and presence of selected specific genetic mutations were not significantly associated with values of Cmin and Cmax ( P >0.05). Among the 79 patients with advanced GISTs receiving ripretinib, reported adverse reactions included alopecia (53, 67.09%), hand-foot syndrome (24, 30.38%), fatigue (22, 27.85%), and myalgia (21, 26.58%). Two patients (2.53%) had grade III complications, both classified as hand-foot syndrome. The correlation between Cmax and adverse reactions was not statistically significant ( P > 0.05). By the time of the latest follow-up, five deaths (6.3%) had occurred within the cohort. The mPFS for the group was 16.3 months, with a mPFS of 14.4 months for those receiving standard dosage and 7.0 months for those receiving escalating dosage. Among the 65 patients treated with standard doses of ripretinib, those with Cmin exceeding a threshold of 450 μg/L exhibited a significantly longer mPFS (18.0 months vs.13.7 months; P < 0.05). Conclusion: In China, patients with advanced GISTs exhibit a notable tolerance to ripretinib, with no evidence for a correlation between adverse reactions and Cmax for the drug. Additionally, a Cmin exceeding 450 μg/L may be associated with an extended mPFS.

40. Baseline predictors associated with successful weight loss among breast cancer survivors in the Lifestyle, Exercise, and Nutrition (LEAN) study.

Abstract

Purpose: To investigate participant characteristics associated with clinically meaningful weight loss (≥ 5% weight loss) among breast cancer survivors participating in the Lifestyle, Exercise, and Nutrition (LEAN) study., Methods: Female breast cancer survivors with a body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m 2 were enrolled in a 6-month weight loss intervention. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to determine baseline predictors of clinically meaningful weight loss (< vs. ≥ 5%) among those in the intervention arm. The area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC-AUC) C-statistic evaluated the final model's ability to classify weight loss success., Results: Baseline data were available for 77 participants. Having a history of weight gain during breast cancer treatment was associated with lower odds of achieving ≥ 5% weight loss (OR = 0.36, 95% CI 0.13 - 0.99) compared to women with no history of weight gain during cancer treatment., Conclusion: Breast cancer survivors with overweight or obesity who gained weight during their cancer treatment were less likely to achieve clinically meaningful weight loss during a post-treatment weight loss intervention., Implication for Cancer Survivors: Breast cancer survivors are encouraged to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight to minimize the risk for cancer recurrence and comorbidity. Our results indicate that programs aimed at prevention of weight gain during treatment could aid in this goal. Abstract

Background: Veterans transitioning to civilian life often have chronic pain from service-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) with higher risk for substance misuse. Many seek VA (Department of Veterans Affairs) compensation for MSD. Use of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment for Pain Management (SBIRT-PM) by VA Post-9/11 Military2VA (M2VA) case managers presents an opportunity to engage these veterans in VA pain care and address substance misuse. Implementation facilitation might help case managers use SBIRT-PM and engage veterans in services to improve outcomes., Design: This study is a 2-cohort multisite cluster-randomized hybrid type 2 effectiveness-implementation trial. Within 2 separate cohorts of 14 VA sites each, sites will be allocated to receive an implementation strategy through the use of a constrained randomization procedure: virtual implementation facilitation or training-as-usual. Sites and M2VA case managers will receive the assigned implementation strategy to support use of SBIRT-PM. Recently discharged veterans (n = 1848) claiming service-connected MSD will be recruited, with case managers blind to veterans' study enrollment. The proportion of participants who receive any SBIRT-PM will be the primary implementation outcome. Veteran participants will complete baseline, 12-week, and 36-week assessments, irrespective of whether case managers conduct SBIRT-PM with them (intent-to-treat). Pain intensity and interference will be the primary clinical outcomes. The study emphasizes pragmatic over explanatory methodological features., Summary: This pragmatic trial will examine implementation facilitation versus training-as-usual in implementing SBIRT-PM to promote veteran engagement in nonpharmacological pain services. Abstract

Starch synthesis in maize endosperm adheres to the basipetal sequence from the apex downwards. However, the mechanism underlying nonuniformity among regions of the endosperm in starch accumulation and its significance is poorly understood. Here, we examined the spatiotemporal transcriptomes and starch accumulation dynamics in apical (AE), middle (ME), and basal (BE) regions of endosperm throughout the filling stage. Results demonstrated that the BE had lower levels of gene transcripts and enzymes facilitating starch synthesis, corresponding to incomplete starch storage at maturity, compared with AE and ME. Contrarily, the BE showed abundant gene expression for genetic processing and slow progress in physiological development (quantified by an index calculated from the expression values of development progress marker genes), revealing a sustained cell vitality of the BE. Further analysis demonstrated a significant parabolic correlation between starch synthesis and physiological development. An in-depth examination showed that the BE had more active signaling pathways of IAA and ABA than the AE throughout the filling stage, while ethylene showed the opposite pattern. Besides, SNF1-related protein kinase1 (SnRK1) activity, a regulator for starch synthesis modulated by trehalose-6-phosphate (T6P) signaling, was kept at a lower level in the BE than the AE and ME, corresponding to the distinct gene expression in the T6P pathway in starch synthesis regulation. Collectively, the findings support an improved understanding of the timing of starch synthesis and cell vitality in regions of the endosperm during development, and potential regulation from hormone signaling and T6P/SnRK1 signaling., (© 2024 Society for Experimental Biology and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Abstract

Birefringent crystals, which can modulate and polarize light, play a vital role in the development of optical sensors and optoelectronic devices. Herein, we synthesized a new birefringent crystal [(C 10 N 2 H 10 )(HI 2 O 6 )(HIO 3 )(IO 3 )] with large birefringence by integrating the large π-conjugated 4,4'-bipyridine group with two types of iodates anions ([IO 3 ] - and [HI 2 O 6 ] - ) characterized by high polarizability anisotropy and strong stereochemically active lone pairs (SCALP). The crystal exhibits a large measured birefringence of 0.171 at 550 nm, surpassing most organic-inorganic hybrid iodate birefringent materials reported in the literature. Theoretical analyses reveal that the optical properties of the crystal arise primarily from the synergistic interactions between the π-conjugated 4,4'-bipyridine group and I-O groups. This research presents an effective method for the strategic integration of large π-conjugated organic cations into iodates, facilitating the design of novel birefringent materials and encouraging further exploration of superior birefringent substances.

Abstract

Objective: To share the results of laparoscopic assisted proximal gastrectomy λ- shaped modified double tract reconstruction. Method: This study retrospectively included 3 patients during January 2024 from the Department of Gastric Surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University using the λ-shaped modified double tract reconstruction. The procedure of the λ-shaped modified double tract reconstruction is as follows. After completing proximal gastrectomy, the jejunum is transected 15 cm from the Treitz ligament. A suture is made 18-20 cm from the distal jejunum to mark the esophagojejunal anastomosis site. A circular stapler anvil is inserted through the distal jejunum, and the remaining end of the jejunum is turned to the right. The circular stapler is pierced through the marked site for an esophagojejunal end-to-end anastomosis, which is reinforced with a barbed suture continuously. A 60mm linear stapler is used to close the remaining end of the jejunum. We then mark the gastric side of the gastrojejunal anastomosis with suture in the middle of the anterior wall of the residual stomach, and mark the jejunal side of the gastrojejunal anastomosis at a distance of about 2 cm and 8 cm from the residual end of the distal jejunum. We make an opening of about 0.5 cm and use a 60 mm linear stapler to perform anastomosis on the jejunal side of the anterior wall of the residual stomach according to the markings, so that the distance between the esophagojejunal anastomosis and the gastrojejunal anastomosis is 10-12 cm. The common opening is closed with barbed wire. About 50 cm below the esophagojejunal anastomosis, the small intestine opening is anastomosed side to side using a circular stapler and the common opening is closed. Return the jejunum into the abdominal cavity to complete the reconstruction of the λ-shaped double tract reconstruction. We analyzed the surgery and postoperative conditions, including surgery time, anastomosis time, intraoperative bleeding, tumor size and pathology, postoperative mobilization, passage of gas and water intake time, discharge time, postoperative complications, and postoperative gastrointestinal imaging to observe the passage of food through the gastric and intestinal loops. Results: Three patients successfully received laparoscopic assisted proximal gastrectomy with λ-shaped modified double tract reconstruction. The surgical time was 155 minutes, 240 minutes, and 160 minutes, respectively; The postoperative time for first ambulation was 20 hours, 18 hours, and 26 hours, respectively. The time for passage of gas was 59 hours, 83 hours, and 75 hours, respectively. The drinking time was 66 hours, 87 hours, and 90 hours, respectively. The postoperative discharge days were all 7 days. No surgical related complications occurred. On the 6th day and 3 months after surgery, gastrointestinal angiography was performed. The contrast agent passed smoothly through the jejunal loop and residual stomach jejunal loop, and both sides were unobstructed. No contrast agent was found to retrograde to the esophagojejunal anastomosis. Conclusion: Laparoscopic assisted proximal gastrectomy with λ-shaped modified double tract reconstruction is safe and feasible, as it improves the diversion of food through the residual stomach while ensuring anti-reflux effects.

This protocol boasts high atom efficiency, broad substrate applicability, and excellent selectivity. Utilizing a simple undivided cell, various nonactivated arenes undergo cyclization/spirocyclization through the intramolecular addition of aryl radicals to an aromatic ring, yielding 50 indolines, spirocyclizative hydroarylation products, and phenanthridinones.

46. Sudden Blindness as the Only Symptom Caused by a Small Sphenoid Sinus Mucocele in a Young Child.

Abstract

Background: Sphenoid sinus mucocele (SSM) represents a relatively rare disease among pediatric population as compared to adults, with a 1% to 3% incidence of all paranasal sinus mucoceles. Since the initial symptoms varied often, SSM caused blindness was scarcely seen. Case Presentation: Here we described an unusual case of small, isolated SSM causing acute visual loss in a 9-year-old girl. The patient first consulted an ophthalmologist for her right blindness. A diagnosis of SSM was suspected indicated by an orbital MRI scan. Thereafter the patient was referred to our department and an endoscopic sphenoidotomy and optic nerve decompression was performed. Surprisingly, her vision was relieved immediately after surgery, followed by dramatic improvement during the postoperative 20-month follow-up period. Conclusion: To our knowledge, a better understanding of SSM in pediatrics is essential for clinicians, including neurologists, ophthalmologists, and otolaryngologists to make early diagnoses and correct treatment by MRI and CT scan. 49. A Circular Touch Mode Capacitive Rainfall Sensor: Analytical Solution and Numerical Design and Calibration.

Abstract

A circular capacitive rainfall sensor can operate from non-touch mode to touch mode; that is, under the action of enough rainwater, its movable electrode plate can form a circular contact area with its fixed electrode plate. Therefore, the weight of rainwater is borne by only its movable electrode plate in non-touch mode operation but by both its movable and fixed electrode plates in touch mode operation, and the total capacitance of its touch mode operation is much larger than that of its non-touch mode operation. Essential to its numerical design and calibration is the ability to predict the deflection shape of its moveable electrode plate to determine its total capacitance. This requires the analytical solution to the fluid-structure interaction problem of its movable electrode plate under rainwater. In our previous work, only the analytical solution for the fluid-structure interaction problem before its movable electrode plate touches its fixed electrode plate was obtained, and how to numerically design and calibrate a circular non-touch mode capacitive rainfall sensor was illustrated. In this paper, the analytical solution for the fluid-structure interaction problem after its movable electrode plate touches its fixed electrode plate is obtained, and how to numerically design and calibrate a circular touch mode capacitive rainfall sensor is illustrated for the first time. The numerical results show that the total capacitance and rainwater volume when the circular capacitive rainfall sensor operates in touch mode is indeed much larger than that when the same circular capacitive rainfall sensor operates in non-touch mode, and that the average increase in the maximum membrane stress per unit rainwater volume when the circular capacitive rainfall sensor operates in touch mode can be about 20 times smaller than that when the same circular capacitive rainfall sensor operates in non-touch mode. This is where the circular touch mode capacitive rainfall sensor excels.

Abstract

In response to the escalating antibiotic resistance in multidrug-resistant pathogens, we propose an innovative phagemid-based capsid system to generate CRISPR-Cas13a-loaded antibacterial capsids (AB-capsids) for targeted therapy against multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Our optimized phagemid system maximizes AB-capsid yield and purity, showing a positive correlation with phagemid copy number. Notably, an 8.65-fold increase in copy number results in a 2.54-fold rise in AB-capsid generation. Phagemids carrying terL-terS-rinA-rinB (prophage-encoded packaging site genes) consistently exhibit high packaging efficiency, and the generation of AB-capsids using lysogenized hosts with terL-terS deletion resulted in comparatively lower level of wild-type phage contamination, with minimal compromise on AB-capsid yield. These generated AB-capsids selectively eliminate S. aureus strains carrying the target gene while sparing non-target strains. In conclusion, our phagemid-based capsid system stands as a promising avenue for developing sequence-specific bactericidal agents, offering a streamlined approach to combat antibiotic-resistant pathogens within the constraints of efficient production and targeted efficacy., (© 2024.
