The Ku-band dual-polarized backscatter signatures of ocean surfaces are described in this article with the airborne scatterometer measurements collected in the Hurricane Ocean Wind Experiment in September 1997.

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) will carry the first spaceborne radar for rainfall observation. Because the TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) footprint size of 4.3 km is greater than the scale of some convective rainfall events, there is concern that nonuniform filling of the PR antenna beam may bias the retrieved rain-rate profile. The authors investigate this effect theoretically and then observationally using data from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Airborne Rain Mapping Radar (ARMAR), acquired during Tropical Oceans Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Response Experiment in early 1993. The authors' observational approach is to simulate TRMM PR data using the ARMAR data and compare the radar observables and retrieved rain rate from the simulated PR data with those corresponding to the high-resolution radar measurements. The authors find that the path-integrated attenuation and the resulting path-averaged rain rate are underestimated. The reflectivity and rain rate near the top of the rainfall column are overestimated. The near-surface reflectivity can be overestimated or underestimated, with a mean error very close to zero. The near-surface rain rate, however, is usually underestimated, sometimes severely.

Ocean backscatter signatures were measured by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory airborne NUSCAT K(sub u)-band scatterometer across the Gulf Stream sea surface temperature front. The measurements were made during the Surface Wave Dynamics Experiment (SWADE) off the coast of Virginia and Maryland in the winter of 1991.

We compare two deterministic and two stochastic rain retrieval algorithms by applying them to 14 GHz reflectivity profiles acquired during TOGA COARE.

The accuracy of wind measurements with scatterometer techniques depends on the particular geophysical model function used in the retrieval algorithm. The measured results are compared with calculated values to assess the existing geophysical model functions for applications to ocean surface wind retrieval.

Teh SIR-C/X-sar radar observations of rain storms are the first multi-polarization and multi-frequency observations of percipitation from space. In addition to numerous, often dramatic images of severe weather systems obtained by forming a synthetic aperture in the usual side-looking attitude, several data takes were performed while the radar antennas were parallel to the ground and the radar beams were pointing at nadir. These oppoprtunities coincided with the passage of the Shuttle over Tropical Cyclone Odille in the southern Indian Ocean during the first flight, and over Typhoon Seth in the Western Pacific during the second flight. The resulting observations, or more apropriately, the resulting measurements, demonstrate for the first time the capability of a spaceborne multi-frequency multi-polarization microwave radar system to quantify precipitation rates, to detect hydrometer phase, and to classify rain type.

A new airborne rain-mapping radar (ARMAR) has been developed by NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for operation on the NASA Ames DC-8 aircraft. The radar operates at 13.8 GHz, the frequency to be used by the radar on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). ARMAR simulates the TRMM radar geometry by looking downward and scanning its antenna in the cross-track direction. This basic compatibility between ARMAR and TRMM allows ARMAR to provide information useful for the TRMM radar design, for rain retrieval algorithm development, and for postlaunch calibration. ARMAR has additional capabilities, including multiple polarization, Doppler velocity measurement, and a radiometer channel for brightness temperature measurement. The system has been tested in both ground-based and airborne configurations. This paper describes the design of the system and shows results of field tests.

Ocean rada backscatter in the presence of large waves is investigated using data acquired with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory NUSCAT radar at K band for horizontal and vertical polarizations and the University of Massachusetts C-SCAT radar at C band for vertical polarization during the Surface Wave Dynamics Experiment. Backscatter data of ocean surfaces was obtained in the presence of large waves with significant wave height up to 5.6m.

Spaceborne synthetic aperture radars (SARs) generate high resolution, wide-swath coverage maps of the surface which resemble aerial photographs.

Experimental results and theoretical calculations are presented to study the polarimetric emission from water surfaces with directional features. For our ground-based Ku-band radiometer measurements, a water pool was constructed on the roof of a building in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and a fiberglass surface with periodic corrugations in one direction was impressed on the top of the water surface to create a stationary water surface underneath it. It is observed that the measured Stokes parameters of corrugated fiberglass-covered water surfaces are functions of azimuth angles and agree very well with the theoretical calculations. The theory, after being verified by the experimental data, was then used to calculate the Stokes parameters of periodic surfaces without fiberglass surface layer and with rms height of the order of wind-generated water ripples. The magnitudes of the azimuthal variation of the calculated emissivities at horizontal and vertical polarizations corresponding to the first two Stokes parameters are found to be comparable to the values measured by airborne radiometers and SSM/I. In addition, the third Stokes parameter not shown in the literature is seen to have approximately twice the magnitude of the azimuth variation of either T(sub h) or T(sub v), which may make it more sensitive to the row direction, while less susceptive to noises because the atmospheric and system noises tend to be unpolarized and are expected to be cancelled out when the third Stokes parameter is derived as the difference of two or three power measurements, as indicated by another experiment carried out at a swimming pool with complicated surroundings. The results indicate that passive polarimetry is a potential technology in the remote sensing of ocean wind vector which is a crucial component in the understanding of global climate change. Issues related to the application of microwave passive polarimetry to ocean wind are also discussed.

Recently, it has been observed that the brightness temperatures of sea surfaces correlate with the azimuth angle of the ocean wind vector, indicating that ocean wind direction can not only be retrieved from the microwave backscatter, but also from the brightness temperature measurements. In this paper, comparison of the theoretical result calculated from a two-scale emission and scattering model with the Seasat and SSM/I model functions and aircraft measurements is presented and potential applications of microwave polarimetry are discussed. In our two-scale model, the modified reflectivities of large scale surfaces are calculated by extending the small perturbation method to the second order for small scale perturbation with anisotropic directional spectrum. It was found that the modified reflectivities derived from the second-order scattered field agree excellently well with the results obtained from a Monte Carlo simulation technique which numerically calculates the polarimetric reflectivities of one-dimensional random rough surfaces with a power-law spectrum. Without the second-order correction, the modified reflectivities of the rough surfaces are significantly over-estimated and sign errors are observed in the third and fourth Stokes parameters for thermal emissions. The surface spectrum parameters and two-scale cutoff are selected so that the calculated scattering and emission signatures agree with the reported model functions for Seasat and SSM/I. Subsequently, the polarimetric signatures of sea surfaces are illustrated to indicate the possibility of reducing the number of azimuthal looks required for spaceborne sensors in the remote sensing of ocean wind by using the polarimetric information. Furthermore, it is found that contrary to the dependence of backscattering coefficients on incidence angles, polarimetric brightness temperatures display a stronger wind direction dependence in the near nadir-looking direction than away from nadir. Finally, we discuss the potential of a single-look polarimetric radiometer for wind retrieval.

We present results obtained by an airborne Ku-band scatterometer during the Surface Wave Dynamics Experiment (SWADE). The specific objective of this study is to improve our understanding of the relationship between ocean radar backscatter and near surface winds. The airborne scatterometer, NUSCAT, was flown on the NASA Ames C-130 over an instrumented oceanic area near 37 deg N and 74 deg W. A total of 10 flights from 27 Feb. to 9 Mar. 1991 were conducted. Radar backscatter at incidence angles of 0 to 60 deg were obtained. For each incidence angle, the NUSCAT antenna was azimuthally scanned in multiple complete circles to measure the azimuthal backscatter modulations. Both horizontal and vertical polarization backscatter measurements were made. In some of the flights, the cross-polarization backscatter was measured as well. Internal calibrations were carried out throughout each of the flights. Preliminary results indicate that the radar was stable to +/-0.3 dB for each flight. In this paper, we present studies of the backscatter measurements over several crossings of the Gulf Stream. In these crossings, large air-sea temperature differences were encountered and substantial changes in the radar cross section were observed. We summarize the observations and compare them to the changes of several wind variables across the Gulf Stream boundary. In one of the flights, the apparent wind near the cold side of the Gulf Stream was very low (less than 3 m/s). The behavior of the radar cross sections at such low wind speeds and a comparison with models are presented. A case study of the effects of swell on the absolute cross section and the azimuthal modulation pattern is presented. Significant wave heights larger than m were observed during SWADE. The experimentally observed effects of the swell on the radar backscatter are discussed. The effects are used to assess the uncertainties in wind retrieval due to underlying waves. A summary of azimuthal modulation from our ten-flight of NUSCAT data is given. Wind velocities, air and sea surface temperature, ocean spectrum, and other variables measured from aircraft and buoys are also shown.
