Dark photons, aside from constituting non-relativistic dark matter, can also be generated relativistically through the decay or annihilation of other dark matter candidates, contributing to a galactic dark photon background. The production of dark photons tends to favor specific polarization modes, determined by the microscopic coupling between dark matter and dark photons. We leverage data obtained from previous searches for dark photon dark matter using a superconducting radio-frequency cavity to explore galactic dark photon fluxes. The interplay of anisotropic directions and Earth's rotation introduces a diurnal modulation of signals within the cavities, manifesting distinct variation patterns for longitudinal and transverse modes. Our findings highlight the efficacy of superconducting radio-frequency cavities, characterized by significantly high-quality factors, as powerful telescopes for detecting galactic dark photons, unveiling a novel avenue in the indirect search for dark matter through multi-messenger astronomy., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

Electromagnetic resonant systems, such as cavities or LC circuits, have emerged as powerful detectors for probing ultralight boson dark matter and high-frequency gravitational waves. However, the limited resonant bandwidth of conventional single-mode resonators, imposed by quantum fluctuations, necessitates numerous scan steps to cover broad unexplored frequency regions. The incorporation of multiple auxiliary modes can realize a broadband detector while maintaining a substantial signal response. The broadened sensitive width can be on the same order as the resonant frequency, encompassing several orders of the source frequency for heterodyne detection, where a background cavity mode transitions into another. Dark photons have emerged as promising candidates for dark matter, and their search is a top priority in particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. We report the first use of a tunable niobium superconducting radio-frequency cavity for a scan search of dark photon dark matter with innovative data analysis techniques. We mechanically adjusted the resonant frequency of a cavity submerged in liquid helium at a temperature of $2$ K, and scanned the dark photon mass over a frequency range of $1.37$ MHz centered at $1.3$ GHz. Our study leveraged the superconducting radio-frequency cavity's remarkably high quality factors of approximately $10^{10}$, resulting in the most stringent constraints to date on a substantial portion of the exclusion parameter space on the kinetic mixing coefficient $\epsilon$ between dark photons and electromagnetic photons, yielding a value of $\epsilon < 2.2 \times 10^{-16}$., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PRL

An axion cloud surrounding a supermassive black hole can be naturally produced through the superradiance process. Its existence can be examined by the axion induced birefringence effect. It predicts an oscillation of the electric vector position angle of linearly polarized radiations. Stringent constraints of the existence of the axion in a particular mass window has been obtained based on the recent Event Horizon Telescope measurement on M87$^\star$. The future Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations will be able to measure the vicinity of many supermassive black holes, thus it opens the possibility to search for the existence of axions in a wide mass regime. In this paper, we study how different black hole properties and accretion flows influence the signatures of the axion induced birefringence. We include the impacts of black hole inclination angles, spins, magnetic fields, plasma velocity distributions, the thickness of the accretion flows. We pay special attention to characterize the washout effects induced by the finite thickness of the accretion flows and the lensed photons. Based on this study, we give prospects on how to optimize the axion search using future VLBI observations, such as the next-generation Event Horizon Telescope, to further increase the sensitivity., Comment: 36 pages, 13 figures, published version in JCAP

Most cosmic microwave background experiments observe the sky along circular or near-circular scans on the celestial sphere. For such experiments, we show that simple linear systems connect the Fourier spectra of temperature and polarization time-ordered data to the harmonic spectra of T, E and B on the sphere. We show how this can be used to estimate those spectra directly from data streams. In addition, the inversion of the linear system that connects Fourier spectra to angular power spectra offers a natural way to down-weight those modes of observation most contaminated by low-frequency noise, ground pickup, or fluctuations of atmospheric emission on large angular scale. This can be of interest for the analysis of future CMB data sets, as an alternative or in complement to other approaches that involve map-making as a first analysis step.

Einstein equivalence principle (EEP), as one of the foundations of general relativity, is a fundamental test of gravity theories. In this paper, we propose a new method to test the EEP of electromagnetic interactions through observations of black hole photon rings, which naturally extends the scale of Newtonian and post-Newtoian gravity where the EEP violation through a variable fine structure constant has been well constrained to that of stronger gravity. We start from a general form of Lagrangian that violates EEP, where a specific EEP violation model could be regarded as one of the cases of this Lagrangian. Within the geometrical optical approximation, we find that the dispersion relation of photons is modified: for photons moving in circular orbit, the dispersion relation simplifies, and behaves such that photons with different linear polarizations perceive different gravitational potentials. This makes the size of black hole photon ring depend on polarization. Further assuming that the EEP violation is small, we derive an approximate analytic expression for spherical black holes showing that the change in size of the photon ring is proportional to the violation parameters. We also discuss several cases of this analytic expression for specific models. Finally, we explore the effects of black hole rotation and derive a modified proportionality relation between the change in size of photon ring and the violation parameters. The numerical and analytic results show that the influence of black hole rotation on the constraints of EEP violation is relatively weak for small magnitude of EEP violation and small rotation speed of black holes., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

We study the equivalence principle, regarded as the cornerstone of general relativity, by analyzing the deformation observable of black hole shadows. Such deformation can arise from new physics and may be expressed as a phenomenological violation of the equivalence principle. Specifically, we assume that there is an additional background vector field that couples to the photons around the supermassive black hole. This type of coupling yields impact on the way the system depends on initial conditions, and affects the black hole shadow at different wavelengths by a different amount, and therefore observations of the shadow in different wavelengths could constrain such couplings. This can be tested by future multi-band observations. In this paper we study implications of the possible excess of 21-cm line global signal at the epoch of cosmic dawn on the evolutions of a class of dynamically interacting dark energy (IDE) models. We firstly summarize two dynamical mechanisms in which different background evolutions can exert considerable effects on the 21-cm line global signal. One is the decoupling time of Compton scattering heating, the other stems from the direct change of optical depth due to the different expansion rate of the Universe. After that, we investigate the IDE models to illustrate the tension between the results of Experiment to Detect the Global Epoch of reionization Signature (EDGES) and other experiments. To apply the analyses of these two mechanisms to IDE models, we find that only the optical depth can be significantly changed. Accordingly, in order to relieve the tension by including the effects of the decoupling time of Compton scattering heating, we deduce a possible evolution form for the Hubble parameter within IDE that begins at an early stage around $z\sim 100$ and then smoothly evolves to a value at $z\sim 17$ which is smaller than that obtained in the standard paradigm. Eventually, we fulfill this scenario by adding an early dark energy dominated stage to the cosmological paradigm described by IDE models, which can alleviate the tension between EDGES and other cosmological observations but cannot completely solve it., Comment: 10 pages, 16 figures

The EDGES Collaboration has recently announced the detection of the 21-cm spectrum with an absorption profile centred at $78$ megahertz, of which the depth is deeper than that expected by the standard cosmological paradigm. To enrich the heating process of baryons due to scattering with dark matter during dark ages, we in this Letter explore the possibility of extra heat transfer between dark sector compositions and their observational signatures on the 21-cm cosmological spectrum. By parameterizing interaction models of the dark Universe, we find that the observational constraint on the parameter space of dark matter can be slightly relaxed but the discrepancy with the commonly predicted parameter space of weakly interacting massive particles remains. Our analyses also reveal that the interaction between dark compositions may leave observational signatures on the 21-cm spectrum during dark ages and thus would become detectable in the forthcoming 21-cm cosmology., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We develop the effective field theory approach to torsional modified gravities, a formalism that allows for the systematic investigation of the background and perturbation levels separately. Starting from the usual effective field theory approach to curvature-based gravity, we suitably generalize it at the background level by including terms of the contracted torsion tensor, and at the perturbation level by including pure torsion perturbative terms and mixed perturbative terms of torsion and curvature. Having constructed the effective field theory action of general torsional modified gravity, amongst others we focus on $f(T)$ gravity and we perform a cosmological application. We investigate the scalar perturbations up to second order, and we derive the expressions of the Newtonian constant and the post Newtonian parameter $\gamma$. Finally, we apply this procedure to two specific and viable $f(T)$ models, namely the power-law and the exponential ones, introducing a new parameter that quantifies the deviation from general relativity and depends on the model parameters. Since this parameter can be expressed in terms of the scalar perturbation mode, a precise measurement of its evolution could be used as an alternative way to impose constraints on $f(T)$ gravity and break possible degeneracies between different $f(T)$ models., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures; v2: updated to match published version, includes extended discussion and new references

The combined observation of GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart GRB170817A reveals that gravitational waves propagate at the speed of light in high precision. We apply the effective field theory approach to investigate the experimental consequences for the theory of $f(T)$ gravity. We find that the speed of gravitational waves within $f(T)$ gravity is exactly equal to the light speed, and hence the constraints from GW170817 and GRB170817A are trivially satisfied. The results are verified through the standard analysis of cosmological perturbations. Nevertheless, by examining the dispersion relation and the frequency of cosmological gravitational waves, we observe a deviation from the results of General Relativity, quantified by a new parameter. Although its value is relatively small in viable $f(T)$ models, its possible future measurement in advancing gravitational-wave astronomy would be the smoking gun of testing this type of modified gravity., Comment: 8 pages
