In the NISQ era, achieving large-scale quantum computing demands compact circuits to mitigate decoherence and gate error accumulation. Quantum operations with diverse degrees of freedom hold promise for circuit compression, but conventional approaches encounter challenges in simultaneously adjusting multiple parameters. Here, we propose a transition composite gate (TCG) scheme grounded on state-selective transition path engineering, enabling more expressive conditional operations. We experimentally validate a controlled unitary (CU) gate as an example, with independent and continuous parameters. By adjusting the parameters of $\rm X^{12}$ gate, we obtain the CU family with a fidelity range of 95.2% to 99.0% leveraging quantum process tomography (QPT). To demonstrate the capability of circuit compression, we use TCG scheme to prepare 3-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and W states, with the fidelity of 96.77% and 95.72%. TCG can achieve the reduction in circuit depth of about 40% and 44% compared with the use of CZ gates only. Moreover, we show that short-path TCG (SPTCG) can further reduce the state-preparation circuit time cost. We study a new class of MDPs that employs multinomial logit (MNL) function approximation to ensure valid probability distributions over the state space. Despite its benefits, introducing non-linear function approximation raises significant challenges in both computational and statistical efficiency. The best-known method of Hwang and Oh [2023] has achieved an $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}(\kappa^{-1}dH^2\sqrt{K})$ regret, where $\kappa$ is a problem-dependent quantity, $d$ is the feature space dimension, $H$ is the episode length, and $K$ is the number of episodes. While this result attains the same rate in $K$ as the linear cases, the method requires storing all historical data and suffers from an $\mathcal{O}(K)$ computation cost per episode. Moreover, the quantity $\kappa$ can be exponentially small, leading to a significant gap for the regret compared to the linear cases. In this work, we first address the computational concerns by proposing an online algorithm that achieves the same regret with only $\mathcal{O}(1)$ computation cost. Then, we design two algorithms that leverage local information to enhance statistical efficiency. They not only maintain an $\mathcal{O}(1)$ computation cost per episode but achieve improved regrets of $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}(\kappa^{-1/2}dH^2\sqrt{K})$ and $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}(dH^2\sqrt{K} + \kappa^{-1}d^2H^2)$ respectively. Finally, we establish a lower bound, justifying the optimality of our results in $d$ and $K$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that achieves almost the same computational and statistical efficiency as linear function approximation while employing non-linear function approximation for reinforcement learning.

In order to investigate the potential observational signals of different regularization ambiguities in loop quantum cosmological models, we systematically compute and compare the primordial scalar power spectra and the resulting angular power spectra in the standard loop quantum cosmology (LQC) and its Thiemann regularized versions -- modified LQC-I/II (mLQC-I/II), using both the dressed metric and the hybrid approaches. All three loop quantum cosmological models yield a non-singular bounce with a post-bounce physics that converges rapidly in a few Planck seconds. Using Starobinsky potential and the initial conditions for the background dynamics chosen to yield the same inflationary e-foldings, which are fixed to be $65$ in all three LQC models, we require that all three models result in the same scale-invariant regime for the primordial power spectrum with a relative difference of less than one percent. This permits us to explore the differences resulting from the deep Planck regime in the angular power spectrum. For the adiabatic states, our results demonstrate that the angular power spectrum predicted by the hybrid approach has a smaller deviation from the angular power spectrum predicted by the standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model at large angles in comparison with the dressed metric approach for all three models. The angular power spectrum predicted by mLQC-I in both the hybrid and the dressed metric approaches shows the smallest deviation from the one predicted by the standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model at large angular scales, except for the case of fourth order adiabatic initial states in the hybrid approach. Nonlinear Compton scattering driven by ultraintense lasers presents a promising avenue for enhancing the photon energy, brilliance, and setup compactness of $\gamma$-ray sources. However, a significant challenge lies in achieving a high polarization degree with commonly generated unpolarized electrons, thus addressing a longstanding puzzle in the field. Here we investigate the polarization dynamics of photons emitted by an unpolarized electron beam interacting with a counter-propagating ultraintense laser pulse numerically, and propose a novel method to generate highly polarized $\gamma$ rays via nonlinear Compton scattering with the aid of vacuum dichroism effect. Our simulations reveal that high-brilliance $\gamma$ rays with polarization beyond 90\% are feasible in a single-shot interaction, rivaling the highest achieved by any $\gamma$-ray sources to date, based on a developed Monte Carlo method incorporating polarization-resolved tree processes of nonlinear Compton scattering and Breit-Wheeler pair production and one-loop vacuum polarization. This generation method showcases an extraordinary ultra-high polarization degree and a user-friendly all-optical experimental setup, while harnessing the high photon energy and brilliance characteristic of nonlinear Compton scattering sources, thus making it of great potential for experimental applications.

We study reinforcement learning with linear function approximation, unknown transition, and adversarial losses in the bandit feedback setting. Specifically, we focus on linear mixture MDPs whose transition kernel is a linear mixture model. We propose a new algorithm that attains an $\widetilde{O}(d\sqrt{HS^3K} + \sqrt{HSAK})$ regret with high probability, where $d$ is the dimension of feature mappings, $S$ is the size of state space, $A$ is the size of action space, $H$ is the episode length and $K$ is the number of episodes. Our result strictly improves the previous best-known $\widetilde{O}(dS^2 \sqrt{K} + \sqrt{HSAK})$ result in Zhao et al. (2023a) since $H \leq S$ holds by the layered MDP structure. Our advancements are primarily attributed to (i) a new least square estimator for the transition parameter that leverages the visit information of all states, as opposed to only one state in prior work, and (ii) a new self-normalized concentration tailored specifically to handle non-independent noises, originally proposed in the dynamic assortment area and firstly applied in reinforcement learning to handle correlations between different states., Comment: AISTATS 2024

This article aims to study the Lorentz/U(1) gauge symmetry-breaking electrodynamics in the framework of the Standard-Model Extension and analyze the Hamiltonian structure for the theory with a specific dimension $d\leq 4$ of Lorentz breaking operators. For this purpose, we consider a general quadratic action of the modified electrodynamics with Lorentz/gauge-breaking operators and calculate the number of independent components of the operators at different dimensions in gauge invariance and breaking. With this general action, we then analyze how the Lorentz/gauge symmetry-breaking can change the Hamiltonian structure of the theories by considering Lorentz/gauge-breaking operators with dimension $d\leq 4$ as examples. We show that the Lorentz-breaking operators with gauge invariance do not change the classes of the constraints of the theory and the number of the physical degrees of freedom of the standard Maxwell's electrodynamics. Modifications to the Mukhanov-Sasaki equation in loop quantum cosmology (LQC) have been phenomenologically explored using polymerization of the connection and related variables in the classical expressions in order to capture the quantum gravity effects in cosmological perturbations which replace the classical big bang by a big bounce. Examples of this strategy include the dressed metric and the hybrid approaches whose inter-relationship at an effective level was demonstrated by the authors recently. In this manuscript, we propose a new family of the effective mass functions in the modified Mukhanov-Sasaki equation of LQC by investigating the polymerization of a particular form of the classical mass function in terms of variable $z_s$($=a\dot \phi/H$) which relates the Mukhanov-Sasaki variable with the comoving curvature perturbation. Using a generalized ansatz motivated by quantum gravity effects in the background dynamics we find alternative effective mass functions which are distinct from those used in the dressed metric and the hybrid approaches with differences originating from the non-commutativity of the evaluation of the Poisson brackets and the polymerization procedures. The new effective mass functions acquire four correction terms in the effective potential whose exact forms are closely tied up with the ansatz used for polymerizing the inverse Hubble rate. In contrast to earlier works, one of these correction terms can in principle produce sizable effects even when the bounce is kinetic dominated. Our investigation opens a new window to explore the phenomenological implications of a large family of effective mass functions in LQC which can potentially lead to significant departures from the dressed metric and the hybrid approaches in the bounce regime., Comment: References added. In this paper, we study analytical approximate solutions of the second-order homogeneous differential equations with the existence of only two turning points (but without poles), by using the uniform asymptotic approximation (UAA) method. To be more concrete, we consider the P\"oschl-Teller (PT) potential, for which analytical solutions are known. Depending on the values of the parameters involved in the PT potential, we find that the upper bounds of the errors of the approximate solutions in general are $\lesssim 0.15\% \sim 10\% $, to the first-order approximation of the UAA method. The approximations can be easily extended to high-order, with which the errors are expected to be much smaller. Generation of ultrarelativistic polarized leptons during interaction of an ultrarelativistic electron beam with a counterpropagating ultraintense laser pulse is investigated in the quantum radiation-dominated domain. While the symmetry of the laser field tends to average the radiative polarization of leptons to zero, we demonstrate the feasibility of sizable radiative polarization through breaking the symmetry of the process in the reflection regime. After the reflection, the off-axis particles escape the tightly focused beam with polarization correlated to the emission angle, while the particles at the beam center are more likely to be captured in the laser field with unmatched polarization and kinetic motion. Meanwhile, polarization along the electric field emerges due to the spin rotation in the transverse plane via precession. In this way, the combined effects of radiative polarization, spin precession and the laser field focusing are shaping the angle-dependent polarization for outgoing leptons. Our spin-resolved Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate an angle-dependent polarization degree up to $\sim20\%$ for both electrons and positrons, with a yield of one pair per seed electron. It provides a new approach for producing polarized high density electron and positron jets at ultraintense laser facilities.

The symmetry can be broken at high temperature and then restored at low temperature, which is the so-called \emph{high temperature symmetry breaking}. It often appears in some theories such as the high scale electroweak baryogenesis mechanism. In this paper, we probe the high temperature $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry breaking with gravitational waves (GWs) from domain wall annihilation. We first introduce a scalar with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry and few of singlet fermions that interact with scalar through a five-dimension operator. This can lead to the scalar potential has a non-zero minimum at high temperature. At the early stage, the scalar is pinned at symmetric phase due to the large Hubble fraction. When the scalar thermal mass becomes comparable to the Hubble parameter, it can quickly roll down to the minimum of potential. Then the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry is spontaneously broken and the domain walls will form. With the decrease of temperature, $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry will be restored. We find that if domain walls are formed at $\mathcal{O}(10^{9})~ \rm GeV$, the GW produced by domain wall annihilation is expected to be observed by BBO, CE and ET. In addition, we also discuss the relationships between this scenario and NANOGrav signal.

In order to study the novel gas detection or sensing applications of gallium nitride monolayer (GaN-ML), we mainly focused on the structural, energetic, electronic and magnetic properties of toxic gas molecules (CO, NO) adsorbed on pristine, single vacancy (N-vacancy, Ga-vacancy) defected, and metals (Al, Fe, Pd and Pt) doped GaN-ML using density functional theory (DFT-D2 method) in this work. The calculations demonstrate that pristine GaN-ML is extremely insensitive to CO and NO together with the existence of a weak physisorption nature due to small adsorption energy, charge transfer, and long adsorption distance. It is found that both N-vacancy defected GaN-ML and Fe-doped GaN-ML can significantly increase the adsorption energy and charge transfer for CO. The CO adsorption induces the metallic characteristics of N-vacancy GaN-ML to be converted to the half-metallic characteristics together with 100% spin polarization, and it also drastically changes the magnetic moment, implying that N-vacancy GaN-ML exhibits excellent sensitivity to CO. However, Fe-doped GaN-ML is not conducive to CO detection. Moreover, N-vacancy defected and Pt-doped GaN-ML greatly improve the adsorption ability for NO compared to other substrates, and the presence of stronger orbital hybridization suggests that the interaction between them is chemisorption. Therefore, N-vacancy defected GaN-ML and Pt-doped GaN-ML can serve as potential materials in future NO sensing devices., Comment: 24 pages, 2 tables, 8 figures

The occurrence of singularities where spacetime curvature becomes infinite and geodesic evolution breaks down are inevitable events in classical general relativity (GR) unless one chooses an exotic matter violating weak energy condition. These singularities show up in various physical processes, such as the gravitational collapse, the birth of the universe in the standard cosmology as well as the classical solutions of the black hole spacetimes. In the last two decades, a rigorous understanding of the dynamics of quantum spacetime and the way it resolves singularities has been achieved in loop quantum cosmology (LQC) which applies the concepts and techniques of loop quantum gravity to the symmetry reduced cosmological spacetimes. Due to the fundamental discreteness of quantum geometry derived from the quantum theory, the big bang singularity has been robustly shown to be replaced by a big bounce. Strong curvature singularities intrinsic in the classical cosmology are generically resolved for a variety of cosmological spacetimes including anisotropic models and polarized Gowdy models. Using effective spacetime description the LQC universe also provides an ultra-violet complete description of the classical inflationary scenario as well as its alternatives such as the ekpyrotic and matter bounce scenarios. In this chapter we provide a summary of singularity resolution and its physical implications for various isotropic and anisotropic cosmological spacetimes in LQC and analyze robustness of results through variant models originating from different quantization prescriptions., Comment: 48 pages, 3 figures.
