Here we report a pressure-induced reemergence of superconductivity in recently discovered superconductor K2Mo3As3, which is the first experimental case observed in quasi-one-dimensional superconductors. We find that, after full suppression of the ambient-pressure superconducting (SC-I) state at 8.7 GPa, an intermediary non-superconducting state sets in and prevails to the pressure up to 18.2 GPa, however, above this pressure a new superconducting (SC-II) state appears unexpectedly. High pressure x-ray diffraction measurements demonstrate that the pressure-induced dramatic change of the lattice parameter c contributes mainly to the emergence of the SC-II state. Combined with the theioretical calculations on band strcture, our results suggest that the reemergemce of superconductivity is associated with the change of the complicated interplay among different orbital electrons, driven by the pressure-induced unisotropic change of the lattice., Comment: 17 pages and 4 figures

In this study, we report the first results of the high-pressure Hall coefficient (RH) measurements in the putative topological Kondo insulator SmB6 up to 37 GPa. Below 10 GPa, our data reveal that RH(T) exhibits a prominent peak upon cooling below 20 K. Remarkably, the temperature at which surface conduction dominates coincides with the temperature of the peak in RH(T). The temperature dependent resistance and Hall coefficient can be well fitted by a two-channel model with contributions from the metallic surface and the thermally activated bulk states. When the bulk of SmB6 becomes metallic and magnetic at ~ 10 GPa, both the RH(T) peak and the resistance plateau disappear simultaneously. Our results indicate that the RH(T) peak is a fingerprint to diagnose the presence of a metallic surface state in SmB6. To decipher the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity, it is important to know how the superconducting pairing emerges from the unusual normal states of cuprate superconductors, including pseudogap, anomalous Fermi liquid and strange metal (SM). A long-standing issue under debate is how the superconducting pairing is formed and condensed in the SM phase because the superconducting transition temperature is the highest in this phase. Here, we report the first experimental observation of a pressure-induced crossover from two- to three-dimensional superconducting states in the optimally-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta bulk superconductor at a pressure above 2.8 GPa, through state-of-the-art in-situ high-pressure measurements of resistance, magnetoresistance and magnetic susceptibility. By analyzing the temperature dependence of resistance, we find that the two-dimensional (2D) superconducting transition exhibits a Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like behavior. The emergence of this 2D superconducting transition provides direct and strong evidence that the SM state is predominantly 2D-like. Spin crossover plays a central role in the structural instability, net magnetic moment modification, metallization, and even in superconductivity in corresponding materials. Most reports on the pressure-induced spin crossover with a large volume collapse so far focused on compounds with single transition metal. Here we report a comprehensive high-pressure investigation of a mixed Fe-Mn perovskite La2FeMnO6. Under pressure, the strong coupling between Fe and Mn leads to a combined valence/spin transition: Fe3+(S = 5/2) to Fe2+(S = 0) and Mn3+(S = 2) to Mn4+(S = 3/2), with an isostructural phase transition. The spin transitions of both Fe and Mn are offset by ~ 20 GPa of the onset pressure, and the lattice collapse occurs in between. Interestingly, Fe3+ ion shows an abnormal behavior when it reaches a lower valence state (Fe2+) accompanied by a + 0.5 eV energy shift in Fe K-absorption edge at 15 GPa. This process is associated with the charge-spin-orbital state transition from high spin Fe3+ to low spin Fe2+, caused by the significantly enhanced t2g-eg crystal field splitting in the compressed lattice under high pressure. Density Functional Theory calculations confirm the energy preference of the high-pressure state with charge redistribution accompanied by spin state transition of Fe ions. Moreover, La2FeMnO6 maintains semiconductor behaviors even when the pressure reached 144.5 GPa as evidenced by the electrical transport measurements, despite the huge resistivity decreasing 7 orders of magnitude compared with that at ambient pressure. Here we report the observation of superconductivity in pressurized type-II Weyl semimetal (WSM) candidate TaIrTe4 by means of complementary high-pressure transport and synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements. We find that TaIrTe4 shows superconductivity with transition temperature (TC) of 0.57 K at the pressure of ~23.8 GPa. Then, the TC value increases with pressure and reaches ~2.1 K at 65.7 GPa. In situ high-pressure Hall coefficient (RH) measurements at low temperatures demonstrate that the positive RH increases with pressure until the critical pressure of the superconducting transition is reached, but starts to decrease upon further increasing pressure. Above the critical pressure, the positive magnetoresistance effect disappears simultaneously. Our high pressure X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that, at around the critical pressure the lattice of the TaIrTe4 sample is distorted by the application of pressure and its volume is reduced by ~19.2%, the value of which is predicted to result in the change of the electronic structure significantly. We propose that the pressure-induced distortion in TaIrTe4 is responsible for the change of topology of Fermi surface and such a change favors the emergence of superconductivity. We show that two different superconducting phases exist at high pressures in the optimized tetradymite topological insulators Bi2Te2Se (BTS) and Bi1.1Sb0.9Te2S (BSTS). The superconducting phases emerge at structural phase transitions, the first at 8.4 GPa for BTS and 12.4 GPa for BSTS, and the second at 13.6 GPa for BTS and 20.4 GPa, for BSTS. Electronic structure calculations show that these phases do not have topological character. Comparison of our results with prior work on Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3 and (Bi,Sb)2(Se,Te)3 allows us to uncover a universal phase diagram for pressure-induced superconductivity in tetradymites, providing a basis for understanding the relationships between topological behavior, crystal structure, and superconductivity for these materials., Comment: 24 pages ands 4 figures

Here we report the observation of extraordinary superconductivity in a pressurized commercial niobium-titanium alloy. We find that its zero-resistance superconductivity persists from ambient pressure to the pressure as high as 261.7 GPa, a record high pressure up to which a known superconducting state can continuously survives. Remarkably, at such an ultra-high pressure, although the ambient pressure volume is shrunk by 45% without structural phase transition, the superconducting transition temperature (TC) increases to ~19.1 K from ~9.6 K, and the critical magnetic field (HC2) at 1.8 K has been enhanced to 19 T from 15.4 T. These results set new records for both of the TC and the HC2 among all the known alloy superconductors composed of only transition metal elements. The remarkable high pressure superconducting properties observed in the NbTi alloy not only expand our knowledge on this important commercial superconductor but also are helpful for a better understanding on the superconducting mechanism., Comment: 13 pages and 4 figures

The archetypical 3D topological insulators Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3 commonly exhibit high bulk conductivities, hindering the characterization of the surface state charge transport. The optimally doped topological insulators Bi2Te2Se and Bi2-xSbxTe2S, however, allow for such characterizations to be made. Here we report the first experimental comparison of the topological surface states and bulk conductances of Bi2Te2Se and Bi1.1Sb0.9Te2S, based on temperature-dependent high-pressure measurements. We find that the surface state conductance at low temperatures remains constant in the face of orders of magnitude increase in the bulk state conductance, revealing in a straightforward way that the topological surface states and bulk states are decoupled at low temperatures, consistent with theoretical models, and confirming topological insulators to be an excellent venue for studying charge transport in 2D Dirac electron systems., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures

Unconventional superconductivity frequently emerges as the transition temperature of a magnetic phase, typically antiferromagnetic, is suppressed continuously toward zero temperature. Here, we report contrary behavior in pressurized CeRhGe3, a non-centrosymmetric heavy fermion compound. We find that its pressure-tuned antiferromagnetic transition temperature (TN) appears to avoid a continuous decrease to zero temperature by terminating abruptly above a dome of pressure-induced superconductivity. Near 21.5 GPa, evidence for TN suddenly vanishes, the electrical resistance becomes linear in temperature and the superconducting transition reaches a maximum. In light of X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements, these characteristics appear to be related to a pressured-induced Ce valence instability, which reveals as a sharp increase in the rate of change of Ce valence with applied pressure., Comment: 17 pages,5 figures

We report the discovery of superconductivity in pressurized CeRhGe3, until now the only remaining non-superconducting member of the isostructural family of non-centrosymmetric heavy-fermion compounds CeTX3 (T = Co, Rh, Ir and X = Si, Ge). Superconductivity appears in CeRhGe3 at a pressure of 19.6 GPa and the transition temperature Tc reaches a maximum value of 1.3 K at 21.5 GPa. This finding provides an opportunity to establish systematic correlations between superconductivity and materials properties within this family. Though ambient-pressure unit-cell volumes and critical pressures for superconductivity vary substantially across the series, all family members reach a maximum Tcmax at a common critical cell volume Vcrit, and Tcmax at Vcrit increases with increasing spin-orbit coupling strength of the d-electrons. These correlations show that substantial Kondo hybridization and spin-orbit coupling favor superconductivity in this family, the latter reflecting the role of broken centro-symmetry., Comment: 15 pages and 4 figures

We report the observation of extraordinarily robust zero-resistance superconductivity in the pressurized (TaNb)0.67(HfZrTi)0.33 high entropy alloy - a new kind of material with a body-centered cubic crystal structure made from five randomly distributed transition metal elements. The transition to superconductivity (TC) increases from an initial temperature of 7.7 K at ambient pressure to 10 K at ~ 60 GPa, and then slowly decreases to 9 K by 190.6 GPa, a pressure that falls within that of the outer core of the earth. We infer that the continuous existence of the zero-resistance superconductivity from one atmosphere up to such a high pressure requires a special combination of electronic and mechanical characteristics. This high entropy alloy superconductor thus may have a bright future for applications under extreme conditions, and also poses a challenge for understanding the underlying quantum physics., Comment: 15 pages and 4 figures

Here we report the observation of pressure-induced melting of antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and emergence of a new quantum state in the honeycomb-lattice halide alpha-RuCl3, a candidate compound in the proximity of quantum spin liquid state. Our high-pressure heat capacity measurements demonstrate that the AFM order smoothly melts away at a critical pressure (Pc) of 0.7 GPa. Intriguingly, the AFM transition temperature displays an increase upon applying pressure below the Pc, in stark contrast to usual phase diagrams, for example in pressurized parent compounds of unconventional superconductors. Furthermore, in the high-pressure phase an unusual steady of magnetoresistance is observed. These observations suggest that the high-pressure phase is in an exotic gapped quantum state which is robust against pressure up to ~140 GPa., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Transition metal dichalcogenides host a wide variety of lattice and electronic structures, as well as corresponding exotic physical properties, especially under certain tuning conditions. Here, we are the first to report the observation of pressure-induced three superconducting transitions in TaTe2, a charge density wave (CDW) - bearing layered transition-metal dichalcogenide that is metallic but not superconducting at ambient pressure. We find that its CDW state can be easily suppressed upon increasing pressure up to ~ 1 GPa. A superconducting state then emerges from the suppressed CDW state and persists to the pressure about 7 GPa. Unexpectedly, another superconducting state appears at ~ 11 GPa within the same monoclinic (M) structure of its ambient-pressure one. Upon further compression to 21 GPa, a third superconducting state with higher Tc appears from a high-pressure (HP) phase. Our experimental results suggest that the pressure-induced three superconducting transitions in TaTe2 are respectively driven by the suppression of the CDW state, the change of the angle in the M phase and the transition of M-to-HP phase. These results demonstrate not only the versatile nature of this correlated electron system, but also the first experimental example that shows the pressure-induced evolution from a CDW state to three superconducting states driven by different mechanisms., Comment: 18 pages and 4 figures

We report high pressure studies of the structural stability of Ru2Sn3, a new type of three dimensional topological insulator (3D-TI) with unique quasi-one dimensional Dirac electron states throughout the surface Brillouin zone of its one-atmosphere low temperature orthorhombic form. Our in-situ high-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction and electrical resistance measurements reveal that upon increasing pressure the tetragonal to orthorhombic shifts to higher temperature. We find that the stability of the orthorhombic phase that hosts the non-trivial topological ground state can be pushed up to room temperature by an applied pressure of ~ 20 GPa. This is in contrast to the commonly known 3D-TIs whose ground state is usually destroyed under pressure. The influence of carrier type on superconductivity has been an important issue for understanding both conventional and unconventional superconductors [1-7]. For elements that superconduct, it is known that hole-carriers govern the superconductivity for transition and main group metals [8-10]. The role of hole-carriers in elements that are not normally conducting but can be converted to superconductors, however, remains unclear due to the lack of experimental data. Here we report the first in-situ high pressure Hall effect measurements on single crystal black phosphorus, measured up to ~ 50 GPa, and find a correlation between the Hall coefficient and the superconducting transition temperature (TC). Our results reveal that hole-carriers play a vital role in developing superconductivity and enhancing TC. Importantly, we also find a Lifshitz transition in the high-pressure cubic phase at ~17.2GPa, which uncovers the origin of a puzzling valley in the superconducting TC-pressure phase diagram. SmB6 is a promising candidate material that promises to elucidate the connection between strong correlations and topological electronic states, which is a major challenge in condensed matter physics. The electron correlations are responsible for the development of multiple gaps in SmB6, whose elucidation is sorely needed. Here we do so by studying the evolutions of the gaps and other corresponding behaviors under pressure. Our measurements of the valence, Hall effect and electrical resistivity clearly identify the gap which is associated with the bulk Kondo hybridization and, moreover, uncover a pressure-induced quantum phase transition from the putative topological Kondo insulating state to a Fermi-liquid state at ~4 GPa. We provide the evidences for the transition by a jump of inverse Hall coefficient, a diverging tendency of the electron-electron scattering coefficient and, thereby, a destruction of the Kondo entanglement in the ground state. These effects take place in a mixed-valence background. One of the most strikingly universal features of the high temperature superconductors is that the superconducting phase emerges in the close proximity of the antiferromagnetic phase, and the interplay between these two phases poses a long standing challenge. It is commonly believed that,as the antiferromagnetic transition temperature is continuously suppressed to zero, there appears a quantum critical point, around which the existence of antiferromagnetic fluctuation is responsible for the development of the superconductivity. In contrast to this scenario, we report the discovery of a bi-critical point identified at 2.88 GPa and 26.02 K in the pressurized high quality single crystal Ca0.73La0.27FeAs2 by complementary in situ high pressure measurements. At the critical pressure, we find that the antiferromagnetism suddenly disappears and superconductivity simultaneously emerges at almost the same temperature, and that the external magnetic field suppresses the superconducting transition temperature but hardly affects the antiferromagnetic transition temperature., Comment: 15 pages and 4 figures

Non-centrosymmetric superconductors, whose crystal structure is absent of inversion symmetry, have recently received special attentions due to the expectation of unconventional pairings and exotic physics associated with such pairings. The newly discovered superconductors A2Cr3As3 (A=K, Rb), featured by the quasi-one dimensional structure with conducting CrAs chains, belongs to such kind of superconductor. In this study, we are the first to report the finding that the superconductivity of A2Cr3As3 (A=K, Rb) has a positive correlation with the extent of non-centrosymmetry. Our in-situ high pressure ac susceptibility and synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the larger bond angle of As-Cr-As in the CrAs chains can be taken as a key factor controlling superconductivity. While the smaller bond angle and the distance between the CrAs chains also affect the superconductivity due to their structural connections with the angle. We find that the larger value of the difference between the larger and samller angles, which is associated with the extent of the non-centrosymmetry of the lattice structure, is in favor of superconductivity. These results are expected to shed a new light on the underlying mechanism of the superconductivity in these Q1D superconductors and also to provide new perspective in understanding other non-centrosymmetric superconductors., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures
