Introduction: Previous studies suggest that low consumption as well as low serum levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) omega-3 and a high omega-6/omega-3 ratio may be implicated in the etiology of depressive disorders, however, epidemiologic evidence is inconclusive.Objective: To assess the relationship of serum levels of omega-3 fatty acids (docosahexaenoic [DHA], eicosapentaenoic [EPA], alpha-linolenic fatty acid [ALA]) and the omega-6 (arachidonic acid [AA])/EPA ratio with depressive symptoms among Mexican college students.Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study that included 60 male and female participants (ages 18 to 24 years) with serum levels of EPA, DHA, ALA and AA. Depressive symptoms were ascertained with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scale validated for Mexican students. Linear regression was used to assess the relationship between depressive symptoms and serum PUFA omega-3 and omega-6.Results: Serum levels of EPA, DHA and EPA/DHA ratio were not related to depressive symptoms, high serum ALA was related with lower depressive symptoms before and after covariate adjustment; however, these results were not statistically significant. Among women, 1% increase in EPA resulted in 5.5. (p = 0.57) increase in the depressive scale scores while 1% increase in ALA resulted in 6.7 decrease (p = 0.39) in the scores.Conclusions: Our results did not confirm the relationship of serum levels of PUFA omega-3 and omega-6/omega-3 ratio with depressive symptoms; the negative correlation of serum ALA with depressive symptoms remains to be confirmed in prospective studies. Objective: To quantify the association between gender role orientation and tobacco and alcohol use among young people of the State of Morelos., Materials and Methods: Study conducted in 2004-2005, students aged 14 to 24 years (n = 1 730). Sociodemographic variables (area of residence, socioeconomic status), family (parental education and violence), psycho-sociological (gender role, self-esteem, depression, alcohol consumption, tobacco, locus of control, sexual abuse). Logistic regression analysis., Results: Factors associated with use of tobacco: In women, being androgynous undesirable, masculine role, attempted sexual abuse and urban areas. For men, depression and submission. Factors associated with alcohol use: In women, masculine gender role; and in men to be older than 20 years, living in semi-urban and urban area, and internal locus., Conclusions: The machismo is one of the gender role orientations with greater association with the use of tobacco primarily in girls in Mexico, and the masculine or instrumental role with alcohol.

Objective: To assess the prevalence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), and of clinical and subclinical condilomatosis in men whose sex partners had been diagnosed with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia., Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from October 1997 to August 1998, among 200 men aged 17 to 64 years referred to the Oncology Department of the National Institute of Perinatology in Mexico City. A physical examination of the penis (penoscopy) was performed after applying 3-5% acetic acid. A colposcope was used to identify acetowhite areas and vascular abnormalities associated with HPV infection. HPV DNA was detected by PCR and reverse line hybridization. The exploratory and univariant statistical analysis was made with the package Stata V6.0., Results: The beta-globin gene was present in 93.5% (n = 187) of the 200 urethral exfoliated cell samples collected. HPV DNA was detected in only 2% (4/187) of the study subjects. Penoscopy data showed the presence of acetowhite areas in 43% (81/187) of subjects., Conclusions: Study findings show that the presence of HPV DNA in urethra is uncommon, as has been reported in several previous studies. Research is needed to evaluate the presence of HPV DNA in the coronal sulcus, as compared with the distal urethral region.
