Abstract

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are serious congenital deformities of the nervous system that occur owing to the failure of normal neural tube closures. Genetic and non-genetic factors contribute to the etiology of neural tube defects in humans, indicating the role of gene-gene and gene-environment interaction in the occurrence and recurrence risk of neural tube defects. Several lines of genetic studies on humans and animals demonstrated the role of aberrant genes in the developmental risk of neural tube defects and also provided an understanding of the cellular and morphological programs that occur during embryonic development. Other studies observed the effects of folate and supplementation of folic acid on neural tube defects. Hence, here we review what is known to date regarding altered genes associated with specific signaling pathways resulting in NTDs, as well as highlight the role of various genetic, and non-genetic factors and their interactions that contribute to NTDs. Additionally, we also shine a light on the role of folate and cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) in neural tube defects.

Abstract

A multi-tracer approach has been implemented in the southwestern part of the Lake Chad Basin to depict the functioning of aquifers in terms of recharge, relationship with surface water bodies, flow paths and contamination. The results are of interest for sustainable water management in the region. The multi-layered structure of the regional aquifer was highlighted with shallower and intermediate to deep flow paths. The shallower aquifer is recharged with rainwater and interconnected with surface water. The groundwater chemistry indicates geogenic influences in addition to a strong anthropogenic fingerprint. The intermediate to deep aquifer shows a longer residence time of groundwater, less connection with the surface and no to only a little anthropogenic influence. Ambient Background Levels (ABLs) and Threshold Values (TVs) show the qualitative status of the groundwater bodies and provide helpful information for water resources protection and the implementation of new directives for efficient and more sustainable groundwater exploitation.

Abstract

La pandémie de la Covid-19 représente un choc majeur pour les sociétés contemporaines et une source de perturbations importantes pour les systèmes alimentaires. Lors des premiers mois de la crise (mars-octobre 2020), des membres du Réseau Mixte Technologique Alimentation locale se sont associés pour mener trois enquêtes (citoyens, accompagnateurs, producteurs) à l’échelle nationale afin de saisir les impacts de cette crise sur les systèmes alimentaires, en particulier sur les circuits courts. L’article propose une synthèse des données recueillies, en ciblant le cas des circuits courts de produits animaux. Il montre en quoi et à quelles conditions les exploitations d’élevage engagées dans ces modes de vente ont résisté, se sont adaptées et ont innové dans les premiers mois de la pandémie. Il souligne le rôle clé d’actions collectives dans la mise en place de solutions rapides aux problèmes identifiés. Tout en appelant à examiner si ces solutions ont été maintenues par la suite, l’article en tire des pistes d’action pour consolider les circuits courts de produits animaux et les capacités de résistance, d’adaptation et d’innovation des exploitations associées.

Abstract

Ce livre aurait pu s’appeler Cassavetes et moi, la balade très personnelle de Quentin Victory Leydier, né en 1987, qui se replonge dans la carrière d’un cinéaste mort en 1989.Un alignement des planètes et une évidence qui aboutit à la relation intime entre un cinéaste, son œuvre et l’amoureux du cinéma qui la regarde et qui voit sa vie changer irrémédiablement à son contact.Moins un livre sur le cinéma qu’un récit personnel, très “littéraire”, même si par modestie Quentin Victory Leydier récusera le terme. Après tout, il n’est qu’un auteur de “livres sur le cinéma”. Gageons qu’Avec John Cassavetes lui donnera tort. Je ne crois pas que Cassavetes puisse laisser qui que ce soit indifférent. Encore faut-il se lancer dans ses films.Je me demande s’il n’y aurait pas des gens que ce cinéma pourrait inquiéter. C’est en partie pour ça que j’ai écrit ce livre. Pour que l’on comprenne qu’il n’y a pas de risque majeur. Et puis, peut-être que cet ouvrage peut accompagner la découverte de ces films, on ne sait jamais.J’espère que ce texte donnera envie à certains de se replonger dans cette énergie folle que sont les films de Cassavetes.Que le lecteur se rassure, ce livre n’a pas vocation à donner des leçons ni à imposer un sens quelconque. Je pense qu’il peut en revanche servir comme un petit plan d’accès que l’on aurait griffonné sur un coin de table, en fin de soirée.De toute façon, il faudrait être bien con pour essayer de figer Cassavetes dans une interprétation car il reviendrait des morts pour tout casser. L’œuvre du cinéaste est trop vaste, c’est un flux si puissant qu’on peut seulement apprendre à ne pas s’y noyer, de là à faire un dos crawlé, c’est une autre histoire.Cassavetes interdit d’étaler sa science pour briller dans les salons, pourtant il y en a encore qui essaient. Et puisque ça m’énerve, j’ai préféré opter pour cette forme très libre qui veut se couler dans l’œuvre. Je ne sais pas si j’y suis parvenu, mais c’était mon objectif. Et c’était plaisant de se senti

Abstract

A series of solid-phase uranium extractants were prepared by post-synthesis impregnation of a mesoporous silica support previously functionalized with octyl chains by direct silanization. Five materials were synthesized with 0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mmol of the amidophosphonate ligand DEHCEBP per gram of functionalized solid, and the effect of the ligand concentration on the uranium extraction efficiency and selectivity of the materials was investigated. Nitrogen adsorption–desorption data show that with increasing ligand loadings, the specific surface area and average pore volume decrease as the amidophosphonate ligand fills first the micropores and then the mesopores of the support. Acidic uranium solutions with a high sulfate content were used to replicate the conditions in ore treatment leaching solutions. Considering the extraction kinetics, the equilibration time was found to increase with the ligand concentration, which can be explained by the clogging of micropores and the multilayer arrangement of the DEHCEBP molecules in the materials with their highest ligand contents. The fact that the equilibrium ligand/uranium ratio is about 2 mol/mol regardless of the ligand concentration in the material suggests that all the ligand molecules remain accessible for extraction. The maximum uranium extraction capacities ranged from 30 mg∙g−1 at 0.2 mmol∙g−1 DEHCEBP to 54 mg∙g−1 in the material with 0.5 mmol∙g−1 DEHCEBP. These materials could therefore potentially be used as solid-phase uranium extractants in acidic solutions with high sulfate concentrations.

The aim of this article is to put this result in a long-term perspective, identify the current features of the Labour electorate, and finally analyse the roots of Labour’s loss of attractiveness. Attention will be given to the role played by Labour's leadership, programme and strategy, as well as to the specific issue of Brexit, in order to take full measure of the electoral failure, which reveals a deep identity crisis.

Abstract

Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were functionalized with an organic ligand to prepare materials for selective extraction of uranium from acidic solution. The effects of di-2-ethylhexylcarbamoylethylbutyl phosphonate (DEHCEBP) ligand concentration on the structure of the final solids and the effect on its extraction capacity were investigated in materials with 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 mmol of organic ligand per gram of solid. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis confirm that impregnation does not modify the carbon network and interlayer distance of the GNPs. As shown with nitrogen adsorption–desorption experiments, the amidophosphonate ligand first fills the micropores then the mesopores of the support while the ligand concentration increases. Acidic uranium solutions with high sulfate content were used to simulate the composition of ore treatment leaching solutions. Increasing the ligand concentration inside the graphene leads to an increase of the equilibration time in batch extraction experiments. This suggests that the DEHCEBP molecules form multiple layers in the materials containing the highest ligand contents. The results also suggest that the ligands located inside the micropores remain inaccessible for extraction. Maximum extraction capacities of the material with 1.2 mmol g−1 to 0.3 mmol g−1 DEHCEBP ranged respectively from 108 mg to 18 mg of uranium per gram of solid. Abstract

Objective: Rare disease. Background: Over-the-counter (OTC) supplement use is a very common practice within the United States. Supplements are not tightly regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. There are many case reports involving OTC supplement adverse effects and medication interactions, but there remains minimal clinical research regarding these subjects. Rhabdomyolysis is one interaction and adverse effect frequently documented in case reports among a variety of OTC supplements, although, to date, there is no documentation of rhabdomyolysis occurring from an interaction between the supplement Tribulus terrestris and atorvastatin. Case Report: A 71-year-old man presented to the Emergency Department in rhabdomyolysis with a mild transaminitis after taking the over-the-counter supplement Tribulus terrestris while on long-term atorvastatin. His rhabdomyolysis peaked at day 4 after cessation of the Tribulus and atorvastatin and aggressive fluid resuscitation with a normal saline bolus at admission followed by a D5 sodium bicarbonate drip later transitioned to a normal saline drip with subsequent down-trending of the creatinine phosphokinase levels. Conclusions: Tribulus terrestris is an herbal supplement used for erectile dysfunction and energy. Recent research suggests it to be a moderate CYP 3A4 inhibitor that plays a significant role in metabolism of statin and many other commonly prescribed medications. This may put patients at increased risk of developing serious adverse effects, including rhabdomyolysis and drug-induced liver injury. Screening patients for over-the-counter supplement use and educating them on the potential risks of their use is extremely important for inpatient and outpatient healthcare professionals to avoid dangerous medication interactions. La relation artistique qui unit Stéphane Brizé et Vincent Lindon au travers de cet ensemble (Mademoiselle Chambon, Quelques heures de printemps, La loi du marché, En guerre, Un autre monde) est probablement l’une des plus belles et des plus riches de ces dernières années.Il m’a semblé plus que logique d’y consacrer un ouvrage tant leurs films sont d’une brûlante actualité et m’apparaissent comme profondément indispensables dans ce monde qui est le nôtre. Ils sont un miroir qu’il est nécessaire de tourner vers soi.Ce livre qui se veut à la fois analytique et personnel est ma manière de rendre, modestement, hommage à ces deux hommes. Il tente de mettre en lumière des constantes, des procédés filmiques (le plan-séquence, par exemple) et s’arrête également sur des thématiques fortes comme le travail, bien sûr, ou encore le langage et sa possible instrumentalisation.Plus que jamais, il me semble, le cinéma français et la société peuvent être fiers de compter parmi eux de pareils artistes.Passionné par le cinéma depuis toujours, Quentin Victory Leydier a réalisé plusieurs courts-métrages, avant de consacrer sa vie à l’enseignement des lettres modernes au collège. Après Retour à Philadelphie, son premier ouvrage consacré à la saga Rocky, il s’intéresse aux films réalisés par Stéphane Brizé avec Vincent Lindon.
