8. (Un)Standardizing Emotions: An Ethical Critique of Social and Emotional Learning Standards

Abstract

Background: This study took place within a policy context in which the state of Ohio, echoing moves across the country, adopted a set of K-12 Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) standards based in the work of the Collaborative for Academic and Social Emotional Learning (CASEL) and its core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. As one of the first states to make such standards part of the state reporting system for school progress, and considering recent critiques of the hegemonic, normative impacts of SEL, we engaged in a systematic analysis of these standards to consider how they affect and further exacerbate the systemic oppressions experienced by multiply-marginalized people in schools. Purpose: This article reports on the normative assumptions in the Ohio SEL standards, using critical discourse analysis (CDA) and the DisCrit tenets to engage in an ethical critique of the real and potential social effects of these standards. Situating these standards relative to existing scholarship on race and dis/abilities in school, we show how the Ohio SEL standards and the CASEL competencies ignore racism, ableism, and other oppressions; privilege civility over productive conflict; and focus on behaviors over emotions, especially when expressed by Black, Brown, dis/abled, and queer people. Research Design: This is a qualitative study whose data were derived from an analysis of the Ohio K-12 Social and Emotional Learning Standards and the CASEL core competencies. Conclusions/Recommendations: Our ethical critique of the Ohio K-12 SEL standards and CASEL core competencies demonstrates how benign acquiescence to their expressed assumptions may negatively affect the experiences of multiply-marginalized people in schools. By ignoring racism, ableism, and other oppressions; privileging civility over productive conflict; and focusing on behaviors over emotions, especially when expressed by Black, Brown, dis/abled, and queer people, SEL standards may undermine or erase the critically productive role that emotions have played in movements for social justice. If we truly want to prioritize the actual social and emotional learning of all students in schools, we need a framework that explicitly names inequities, allows for collective agency, and acknowledges and enables access to emotions. Making space for these emotions, although considered by some to be outside the "norm" of acceptable classroom behaviors, would allow all students to be seen for who they are, to truly express how they feel, and to create and take up opportunities, themselves, for social change and justice.

Abstract

Introduction: Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition that affects approximately 1% of the population worldwide. Although its main impact often concerns the small intestine, resulting in villous atrophy and nutrient malabsorption, it can also cause systemic manifestations, particularly when undiagnosed or left untreated. Method: Attention is directed to the possible psychological, psychiatric, and organic brain manifestations of celiac disease. Specific topics related to the influence and risk of such manifestations with respect to celiac disease are defined and discussed. Overall, eighteen main topics are considered, sifted from over 500 references. Results: The most often studied topics were found to be the effect on quality of life, organic brain dysfunction and ataxia, epilepsy, Down syndrome, generalized psychological disorders, eating dysfunction, depression, and schizophrenia. For most every topic, although many studies report a connection to celiac disease, there are often one or more contrary studies and opinions. A bibliographic analysis of the cited articles was also done. There has been a sharp increase in interest in this research since 1990. Recently published articles tend to receive more referencing, up to as many as 15 citations per year, suggesting an increasing impact of the topics. The number of manuscript pages per article has also tended to increase, up to as many as 12 pages. The impact factor of the publishing journal has remained level over the years. Conclusion: This compendium may be useful in developing a consensus regarding psychological, psychiatric, and organic brain manifestations that can occur in celiac disease and for determining the best direction for ongoing research focus. Abstract

Background: Studies on the effect of computer-aided detection (CAD) in a daily clinical screening and surveillance colonoscopy population practice are scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate a novel CAD system in a screening and surveillance colonoscopy population. Methods: This multicentre, randomised, controlled trial was done in ten hospitals in Europe, the USA, and Israel by 31 endoscopists. Patients referred for non-immunochemical faecal occult blood test (iFOBT) screening or surveillance colonoscopy were included. Patients were randomomly assigned to CAD-assisted colonoscopy or conventional colonoscopy; a subset was further randomly assigned to undergo tandem colonoscopy: CAD followed by conventional colonoscopy or conventional colonoscopy followed by CAD. Primary objectives included adenoma per colonoscopy (APC) and adenoma per extraction (APE). Secondary objectives included adenoma miss rate (AMR) in the tandem colonoscopies. The study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04640792. Findings: A total of 916 patients were included in the modified intention-to-treat analysis: 449 in the CAD group and 467 in the conventional colonoscopy group. APC was higher with CAD compared with conventional colonoscopy (0·70 vs 0·51, p=0·015; 314 adenomas per 449 colonoscopies vs 238 adenomas per 467 colonoscopies; poisson effect ratio 1·372 [95% CI 1·068–1·769]), while showing non-inferiority of APE compared with conventional colonoscopy (0·59 vs 0·66; p<0·001 for non-inferiority; 314 of 536 extractions vs 238 of 360 extractions). AMR in the 127 (61 with CAD first, 66 with conventional colonoscopy first) patients completing tandem colonoscopy was 19% (11 of 59 detected during the second pass) in the CAD first group and 36% (16 of 45 detected during the second pass) in the conventional colonoscopy first group (p=0·024). 36. Whose Theory of Participation? School Governance Policy and Practice in South Africa

Abstract

This article analyzes South Africa's efforts to promote broader participation in educational decision-making through local school governance structures in which parents serve as majority members. We utilize the "theory of action" framework to understand both government policy and school-level actors' meanings of two dimensions of governance: participation and representation. The analysis considers policy statements, government efforts to monitor implementation, and extensive data from parents, principals, teachers and learners in six diverse schools in two provinces. The "theory-in-use" among most of the school-level actors reflects the policy signals and dominates governance discourse. School governance and participation is being defined in very narrow terms that emphasize participation for efficiency reasons, rather than for democratic purposes. Parents' participation is framed by what principals view as appropriate within the boundaries of supporting the efficient running of the school. Truly re-defining roles of school level actors will require addressing power structures and conventions if it is to allow for the authentic participation of communities in the governance of schools. Abstract

Recently, an autosomal recessive subtype of connective tissue disorder within the spectrum of Ehlers–Danlos syndrome (EDS), named classical-like EDS type 2 (clEDS2), was identified. clEDS2 is associated with biallelic variants in the adipocyte enhancer binding protein 1 (AEBP1) gene, specifically, affecting its aortic carboxypeptidase-like protein (ACLP) isoform. We described the 15th patient (13th family) diagnosed with clEDS2. This patient presented with notable similarities in phenotype to the documented cases, along with additional characteristics such as significant prematurity and short stature. An EDS sequencing panel-based analysis revealed homozygous AEBP1: NM_001129.5:c.2923del, p.Ala975Profs*22 likely pathogenic variants, and maternally inherited heterozygous COL11A1: NM_001854.4:c.1160A>G, p.Lys387Arg variant of uncertain significance in our patient. Upon comprehensive review of all previously reported clEDS2 patients, our patient exhibited the following overlapping phenotypes, including cutaneous features: hyperextensibility, atrophic scars/delayed wound healing (100%), easy bruising (100%), excessive skin (93%); skeletal features: generalized joint hypermobility (93%), pes planus (93%), dislocation/subluxation (93%); and cardiovascular features (86%). Our patient did not display symptoms of the critical complications reported in a few individuals, including superior mesenteric artery aneurysms and ruptures, aortic root aneurysm/dissection, spontaneous pneumothoraxes, and bowel ruptures. Abstract

Eastern fox squirrels have been introduced to many regions within the western United States including areas within California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. In California, fox squirrels have been introduced to San Francisco, Fresno, Los Angeles, San Diego, Berkeley, Mount Diablo in Clayton, Bakersfield, and Santa Barbara. The geographic range of the eastern fox squirrel has expanded greatly both through natural dispersal and additional intentional introductions by humans. The fox squirrel has replaced the native western gray squirrel in certain habitats while the two species coexist in other habitats. Western gray squirrels exist by themselves in a third type of habitat even though eastern fox squirrels have occupied adjacent habitat for about 30 years. Habitat Suitability Models (HSMs) have been used to predict the presence and/or abundance of a particular species within a habitat. Analysis of 9 habitat variables using Discriminant Analysis produced a HSM where replacement, coexistence, and exclusion habitats can be identified using only 3 of the 9 habitat variables: average height of ground cover, percent canopy cover, and percent of total trees that are deciduous. A field study underway for over two years at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Claremont, CA is testing the validity of the HSM with the study site predicted to be a long-term coexistence habitat. The ratio of western gray squirrels to eastern fox squirrels has gone from 3:1 shortly after the fox squirrel entered the habitat to 1:1, but after 2.5 years of coexistence both species are commonly observed in the study site. The HSM is also being tested through the analysis of additional habitats. Although coexistence of the two species is possible for many decades, the number of western gray squirrels in coexistence habitats is often small, coexistence habitats are geographically isolated from each other, and the probability of extinction of western gray squirrels from these habitats could be high. We are also looking for new habitats which could support western gray squirrels if individuals were moved to these habitats.
