The Epoch of Reionization (EoR) began when galaxies grew in abundance and luminosity, so their escaping Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation started ionizing the surrounding neutral intergalactic medium (IGM). Despite significant recent progress, the nature and role of cosmic reionizers are still unclear: in order to define them, it would be necessary to directly measure their LyC escape fraction ($f_{esc}$). However, this is impossible during the EoR due to the opacity of the IGM. Consequently, many efforts at low and intermediate redshift have been made to determine measurable indirect indicators in high-redshift galaxies so that their $f_{esc}$ can be predicted. This work presents the analysis of the indirect indicators of 62 spectroscopically confirmed star-forming galaxies at $6 \leq z \leq 9$ from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) survey, combined with 12 sources with public data from other JWST-ERS campaigns. From the NIRCam and NIRSpec observations, we measured their physical and spectroscopic properties. We discovered that on average 6 < z < 9 star-forming galaxies are compact in the rest-frame UV (re ∼ 0.4 kpc), are blue sources (UV-β slope ∼ − 2.17), and have a predicted fesc of about 0.13. A comparison of our results to models and predictions as well as an estimation of the ionizing budget suggests that low-mass galaxies with UV magnitudes fainter than M1500 = −18 that we currently do not characterize with JWST observations probably played a key role in the process of reionization. - Abstract
Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical science.

- Abstract
Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical science.

A preliminary survey of Magellan imagery reveals more than 200 newly discovered relic channel and valley landform complexes. For purposes of discussion the channels can be classed as simple, complex, and compound. Integrated valleys also occur. Simple channels include: (1) sinuous rilles that closely resemble their lunar counterparts and (2) a newly recognized long sinuous form of high width-to-depth ratio and remarkably constant width. Herein designated canali, the most spectacular of these channels is 6800 km long. One of the compound channels, an outflow complex in Lada Terra, extends over 1200 km and is up to 30 km wide. Streamlined hills and spill relationships at a cross-axial ridge are similar to features in flood channels. Venusian channels have a global distribution with most of the large canali-type channels developed on volcanic plains. Alternative hypotheses for the channel-forming processes include genesis by the following erosive fluids: ultramafic silicate melts, sulfur, and carbonate lavas. Each of these causative agents has profound implications for Venusian planetology. The remote possibility of an aqueous origin, indicated by apparent regime behavior of the active channeling process, cannot be excluded with absolute certainty.

Recent progress in defining the physical, orbital, and chemical properties of the Earth-crossing asteroid and comet population was integrated into an elaborate Monte Carlo model of the fluxes of bodies in the inner Solar System. This model is of use in projecting flight opportunities to as-yet undiscovered near-Earth objects and in assessing the impact hazard to life on Earth and the evolutionary consequences of impacts on the other terrestrial planets. Further progress was made in defining desirable transportation system architectures for the use of non-terrestrial volatiles and metals, including the delivery of propellants to near-Earth space for fueling of space exploration initiative (SEI) type expeditions, the construction and resupply of Solar Power Satellite constellations in various Earth orbits (including geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO) and Highly Eccentric Earth Orbit (HEEO)), and retrieval of He-3 for use as a clean fusion fuel on Earth. These studies suggest a greater future role for SERC in the exploration of space energy sources to meet Earth's 21st-century energy requirements. Laboratory studies of volatilization and deposition of ferrous metal alloys demonstrated deposition of strong iron films from carbonyl chemical vapor deposition (CVD), showing the crucial role of additive gases in governing the CVD process, and pointing the way to specific experiments on extraction and deposition of ferrous metals from nonterrestrial materials.

Hydrated magnesium sulfate constitutes up to 1/6 of the mass of carbonaceous chondrites, and probably is important in many icy asteroids and satellites. It occurs naturally in meteorites mostly as epsomite. MgSO4, considered anhydrously, comprises nearly 3/4 of the highly soluble fraction of C1 chondrites. Thus, MgSO4 is probably an important solute in cryovolcanic brines erupted on certain icy objects in the outer solar system. While the physiochemical properties of the water-magnesium sulfate system are well known at low pressures, planetological applications of these data are hindered by a dearth of useful published data at elevated pressures. Accordingly, solid-liquid phase equilibria was recently explored in this chemical system at pressures extending to about 4 kilobars. The water magnesium sulfate system in the region of the eutectic exhibits qualitatively constant behavior between pressures of 1 atm and 2 kbar. The eutectic melting curve closely follows that for water ice, with a freezing point depression of about 4 K at 1 atm decreasing to around 3.3 K at 2 kbars. The eutectic shifts from 17 pct. MgSO4 at 1 atm to about 15.3 pct at 2 kbars. Above 2 kbars, the eutectic melting curve again tends to follow ice.

The laboratory-measured viscosities of liquid mixtures representative of the variety of cryovolcanic substances of the icy satellites are presently noted to be much greater than could be expected on the assumption that end-member molecules are noninteractive; this observation is supported by others concerning molar volumes and vapor pressure relations, which indicate the presence of strong molecular-interaction forces that fundamentally affect the mixtures' physical properties. Since the rheological effects of partial crystallization parallel the characteristics of silicate lavas, icy satellite cryovolcanic morphologies are similarly interpretable with allowances for differences in surface gravities and lava densities.

This paper summarizes the research program, concentrating upon the production of (1) propellants, both cryogenic and storable, (2) volatiles such as water, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide for use in life-support systems (3) structural metals, and (4) refractories for use in aerobrakes and furnace linings.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films were deposited on polyethylene napthalate (PEN) by rf sputtering using different rf powers (60 and 120 W) and at different substrate temperatures (room temperature and 100 °C). Selected PEN substrates were pretreated using an Ar plasma before ITO sputter deposition. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry was used to determine the oxygen content in the films. Hall effect measurements were used to evaluate the electrical properties. In this paper the influence of defect structure, sputtering conditions, and the effect of annealing on the electrical and optical properties of ITO on PEN have been investigated. Electrical properties such as carrier concentration, mobility, and resistivity of the ITO films varied with rf power and substrate temperature. The electrical and optical properties of the films changed after annealing in air. This study also describes how the as-deposited amorphous ITO changes from amorphous to crystalline as a result of heat treatment, and investigates the effects of Sn defect clustering on electrical and optical properties of the ITO films. The mechanisms leading to improved brightness, efficiency, and stability of alternating-current thin-film electroluminescent (ACTFEL) ZnS:Mn phosphors have been studied. Previously we have shown that ex situ codoping of the sputter deposited ZnS:Mn active layer with K and C1 results in a 53% improvement in brightness, a 62% improvement in efficiency, and better 100 h accelerated aging stability. In this work, we demonstrate that these improvements result from a 75% increase in excitation efficiency for conduction electrons, combined with a small decrease in both light outcoupling and nonradiative recombination. Electrical properties data were used to determine that there is a reduced amount of static space charge in the codoped films, resulting in a larger average field, increased excitation efficiency, and increased charge multiplication. The reduced space charge is attributed to the addition of charge compensating zinc vacancy-chlorine complexes and isolated chlorine point defects, which are acceptor and donor defects, respectively, and a reduction of zinc vacancy deep hole traps. It is postulated that higher average fields results in sufficient electron multiplication or donor ionization such that current for EL excitation is limited by the phosphor resistance rather than capacitance or density of interface states. The possibility of using these mechanisms to increase the efficiency of other ACTFEL phosphors is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alternating current thin film electroluminescent devices have been fabricated using sputter-deposited ZnS:Mn with and without codoped potassium chloride via both in situ and ex situ methods. In situ codoping proved to be difficult due to a memory effect in the deposition chamber. Samples codoped with potassium chloride via an ex situ diffusion method exhibited improvements in brightness of up to 70% (572 vs 337 cd/m²) and efficiency of up to 60% (1.95 vs 1.25 lm/W) over noncodoped samples. The threshold voltage increased by ≈5% (160 vs 168 V), and the brightness-versus-voltage curve stabilized more rapidly for the devices. Several possible mechanisms to explain these effects are discussed. While modest microstructural changes contribute to the improvements, changes in point defects which lead to modification of the space charge in the devices appears to be the dominant mechanism. The performance characteristics of neuroendocrine-specific and squamous-specific immunohistochemical markers in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), in particular in oropharyngeal tumors in this era of human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced cases, are not well-established. The differential diagnosis for poorly differentiated SCCs, for nonkeratinizing oropharyngeal SCCs, and for other specific SCC variants such as basaloid SCC and undifferentiated (or lymphoepithelial-like) carcinomas includes neuroendocrine carcinomas. Given that neuroendocrine carcinomas of the head and neck are aggressive regardless of HPV status, separating them from SCC is critically important. In this study, we examined the neuroendocrine markers CD56, synaptophysin, and chromogranin-A along with the squamous markers p40 and cytokeratin 5/6 in a large tissue microarray cohort of oral, oropharyngeal, laryngeal, and hypopharyngeal SCCs with known HPV results by RNA in situ hybridization for the oropharyngeal tumors. Results were stratified by site and specific SCC variant. The neuroendocrine stains were rarely expressed in SCC (<1% overall) with CD56 the least, and chromogranin-A the most, specific markers. Further, p40 and cytokeratin 5/6 were very consistently expressed in all head and neck SCC (>98% overall), including very strong, consistent staining in oropharyngeal HPV-related nonkeratinizing SCC. Undifferentiated (or lymphoepithelial-like) carcinomas of the oropharynx are more frequently p40 or cytokeratin 5/6 negative or show only weak or focal expression. In summary, markers of neuroendocrine and squamous differentiation show very high specificity and sensitivity, respectively, across the different types of head and neck SCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A one-day satellite workshop was organized to coincide with the 17th International Symposium on Radiopharmaceutical Sciences held in Aachen, Germany, April 30-May 4, 2007. The workshop, “Production and application of ‘non-standard’ PET nuclides”, was held on Sunday April 29, 2007 at the Eurogress Aachen and was organized by J. Lewis, PhD, L. Tang, and M. Welch, PhD. The workshop was designed for the radiopharmaceutical community discussing the production, use and dissemination of the “non-standard” PET nuclides. The definition of “nonstandard” positron emission tomography (PET) nuclides included 45Ti, 60Cu, 61Cu, 64Cu, 66Ga, 72As, 74As, 76Br, 86Y, 89Zr, 94mTc and 124I. The workshop was supported by the grant Research Resource for Cancer Applications (R24 CA86307) funded by the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health. The workshop was attended by over 110 scientists and engineers from over 20 countries from all over the world and was designed with an open forum style to allow for discussions and interactions by all participants. All of the invited speakers were asked to make a contribution to this edition of the Quarterly Journal of Nuclear Medicine. The individual articles following this introduction are reviews of their area of expertise and the current state-of-the-art. This introduction briefly describes the role of the workshop, the aims and the general outcome. Also, the translation of these nuclides to the clinic, perhaps the most important goal of this work is discussed in this introductory article.

The management of iatrogenic pseudoaneurysms (IPAs) demands close co-operation between radiologist, vascular surgeon and plastic surgeon. Ideally, each patient should be reviewed employing a team approach. Many IPAs require only observation; those with a volume greater than 6 cm3 will require treatment as spontaneous thrombosis is uncommon. Radiological treatment options include ultrasound guided compression repair (UGCR), embolisation, and covered stenting. Occasionally, these are unsuccessful or contra-indicated, and the vascular surgical approach is discussed in detail. Finally, the role of the plastic surgeon in dealing with skin ischaemia is detailed.
