Abstract

A multi-step process for measuring the biogenic contributions in the radiocarbon abundance of atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOC) is described. It includes methods for isolating the total VOC fraction in whole air samples, for oxidizing this fraction to CO2 and for reducing the resulting CO2 to an AMS Fe-C target for 14C measurements. VOC fractions were separated from two composited urban tropospheric air samples collected in the summer of 1992 in Atlanta, GA.

Abstract

Two methods that use LiOH to selectively remove CO2 from ambient whole air samples were found to be capable of decreasing CO2 in ambient air samples by 4 orders of magnitude, with only a minimal effect on their volatile organic compound (VOC) content. According to VOC speciation findings, aldehydes generally suffered the greatest loss during CO2 removal, while hydrocarbons were virtually unaffected.

Abstract

Residential wood combustion (RWC) and motor vehicle (MV) emissions were characterized as the two major sources in an analysis of air particulate matter samples that were collected in Boise, ID. The samples were subjected to gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. Levels of source contributions were measured by comparing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations from burning soft woods, RWC and MV. A consistent relationship was observed among the relative concentrations and their distribution between the two major sources.

Abstract

A modeling methodology combining the Graphical Ratio Analysis for Composition Estimates (GRACE) and Source Apportionment by Factors with Explicit Restrictions (SAFER) was used to derive the source compositions of three volatile organic sources in Atlanta, GA. The volatile hydrocarbon sources were evaporation of whole gasoline, emissions from vehicles in motion and gasoline headspace vapor. These were obtained from hourly measurements of volatile organic compounds by automated gas chromatograph in the summer of 1990. The GRACE/SAFER method is discussed as a cost-alternative alternative to direct source measurement of profiles.

Abstract

Liposuction is a surgical procedure in which fat deposits are removed by suction through blunt cannulas, or tube-like structures, inserted into small cuts in the skin. The use of liposuction is increasing in the United States, and guidelines of care for liposuction have been developed. These guidelines address issues of appropriate care, expectations, side effects, and complications. Liposuction may be used for managing certain diseases, such as lipomas, or fatty tumors; lipodystrophy, or impaired fat metabolism; gynecomastia, or abnormally large breasts in men; excessive sweating from armpits; and other conditions. This procedure may also be used for purposes of cosmetic body contouring of the face, neck, extremities, abdomen, flanks, and buttocks, or reconstructing skin-related defects. The qualifications of the physician who can perform liposuction are described. The suitability of liposuction for a specific patient depends on the patient's medical history, physical examination, mental status, and laboratory test results. Recommendations for surgical liposuction are presented with respect to procedure, anesthesia, the volume of fat removed, fluid replacement, surgical setting, additional medications, and care after surgery. Abstract

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) is a disorder characterized by extreme pain, changes in the blood vessels of the skin, and impaired muscle function. The disorder is due to physical damage or irritation of the sympathetic nervous system and its interaction with nerves that stimulate muscles. The sympathetic nervous system controls involuntary body functions, particularly under emergency physiologic conditions such as fright. Early symptoms of RSD include dilation of blood vessels, reddening of skin, edema or fluid accumulation, and decreased perspiration. The second stage of RSD is characterized by the constriction of blood vessels. The affected limb is cool, painful, dry, scaly, pale, and cyanotic or discolored due to reduced hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in the blood. Areas of edema and pain are more extensive at this stage, and bone loss may occur in the affected region. In the advanced stages of RSD, the skin is shiny, smooth, pale, and cyanotic. There are abnormalities in perspiration and extensive bone loss, leading to a loss of limb function. Treatment of RSD includes analgesic or pain-relieving agents, blockage or removal of portions of the sympathetic nervous system, physical therapy in the absence of pain, and psychotherapy to help the patient deal with the disability of RSD. Abstract

The article relates the results of a University of Tennessee Bureau of Business Research study of the economic effects of price maintenance in Knoxville, Tennessee. The first part of the study focused on the impact of Fair Trade laws and the level of permeation within retail trades. Additionally, the study compared prices in "orthodox" or independent drug stores against those in cut-rate drug stores to gage the impact of the Fair Trade Act. Based on the information gleaned from the study, it was found that prices of controlled articles increased in cut-rate drug stores. Also, cut-rate stores used the minimum price as the maximum price. Further discussion of brand substitution in both orthodox and cut-rate drug stores is discussed.

Abstract

A 1 month intensive summertime field study conducted in rural western Maryland resulted in a comprehensive set of fine particle, gaseous and meteorological data. Sulfur in the assumed form of ammonium sulfate accounted for 67% of the average fine particle mass and had a very high correlation with fine particle mass (r=0.99). Other measured species, includiqg carbon and nitrate, made only minor contributions to the fine mass. Peak sulfate concentrations, averaged over 6-h intervals, exceeded 50 [mu]g m-3. Nitric acid concentrations showed strong daytime maxima and on a 24 h basis were about four times those of fine particle nitrate. Sulfur in the gas phase (SO2) constituted more than half of the total sulfur, indicating that the sampling site was being influenced by local sources. Fine particle selenium was well correlated with fine particle sulfur (r=0.70). The ratio of fine particle sulfur to selenium was 2800, characteristic of a rural site downwind of coal-burning areas. Mixed-layer back trajectories were used to identify possible source regions for the measured parameters. Wind frequency-normalized concentrations of parameters associated with coal-burning (S, Se, SO2 and mass) were highest for back trajectories arriving at Deep Creek Lake from the west-northwest. Use of Rahn and Lowenthal regional signatures showed an overwhelming dominance by the Lower Midwest region, and a surprisingly weak impact by the Upper Midwest region, at the site.

Abstract

An organic tracer method, recently proposed for estimating individual contributions of toluene and α-pinene to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation, was evaluated by conducting a laboratory study where a binary hydrocarbon mixture, containing the anthropogenic aromatic hydrocarbon,toluene, and the biogenic monoterpene, α-pinene, was irradiated in air in the presence of NOx to form SOA. The contributions of toluene and α-pinene to the total SOA concentration, calculated using the organic tracer method, were compared with those obtained with a more direct 14C content method. In the study, SOA to SOC ratios of 2.07 ± 0.08 and 1.41 ± 0.04 were measured for toluene and α-pinene SOA, respectively. The individual tracer-based SOA contributions of 156 µg m-3 for toluene and 198 µg m-3 for α-pinene, which together accounted for 82% of the gravimetrically determined total SOA concentration, compared well with the 14C values of 182 and 230 µg m-3 measured for the respective SOA precursors. While there are uncertainties associated with the organic tracer method, largely due to the chemical complexity of SOA forming chemical mechanisms, the results of this study suggest the organic tracer method may serve as a useful tool for determining whether a precursor hydrocarbon is a major SOA contributor.
