In this paper the authors analyse stereotypical terms bodul, školjar and vlah, and consider the meanings and contexts in which stereotypical features are attributed to them. The etymologies of these terms have been presented and discussed. Meanings, usage contexts and terminological inconsistencies have been analysed in selected dictionaries of the Croatian standard language and dialect dictionaries. The distribution of these terms along the Adriatic has been presented and conclusions offered as to whether this phenomenon should be considered as a regional or supraregional one. This paper presents the socio-demographic profile of participants in the Croatian Islands' Birth Cohort Study (CRIBS), the first longitudinal study in Croatia to follow pregnant women and their children up to the age of two. The sample consisted of 286 pregnant women (145 from the islands of Brač and Hvar, and 141 from the mainland). The study aimed to: 1) summarise the main characteristics of the CRIBS study sample; 2) compare the sample with the general population of Croatia; 3) analyse the differences between the CRIBS participants according to place of residence (islands vs. mainland) and family type (nuclear vs. extended family). In comparison with women from the mainland, islander women had more often given birth to more than one child and finished only secondary school, while most of the women from the mainland had university degree. The prevalence of different family types also significantly differed between the islands and mainland, with islanders living in extended families and having lower average household income. On the Croatian islands of Hvar and Brae, there is a diversified system of rivalry and animosity among island communities, defined by the term campanilism. It is based on stereotypes about inhabitants of neighbouring island localities or neighbouring islands and on the production of mocking collective nicknames. Anecdotes, jokes, proverbs and similar oral forms are used as a means of confirming characteristics attributed to certain communities. Nowadays their performance is mainly connected to sporting events, celebrations of patron saints' days and school children's disputes. Previously they were considered to be a form of exclusively intra-island knowledge. Islanders mostly found them insulting. However, some communities have decided to turn these stereotypes into brands, highlighting them in representations of local identities and in tourist promotion. In this paper we analyze the way in which certain stereotypes focusing on islanders' flaws or virtues are used in contemporary identity strategies and the construction of local uniqueness. The aim of this preliminary study is to analyze genetic specificity of Kosovo Albanians comparing with neighboring populations using new genetic tool - MEDISCOPE gene chip, to investigate the feasibility of this approach. We collected 37 DNA samples (9 Croats, 17 Albanians from Croatia and 11 Albanians from Kosovo) from unrelated males born in Croatia and Kosovo. Additionally, samples were expanded with female individuals and mtDNA analysis included a total of 61 samples (15 Croats, 23 Albanians from Croatia and 23 Albanians from Kosovo). This pilot study suggests that the usage of the MEDISCOPE chip could be recognized as an efficient tool within recognition of the population genetic specificity even within extremely small sample size.

This paper is focused on the manifestations of inter-community animosities and campanilistic rivalries in the treatise Faria - Città Vecchia e non Lesina. Pietro Hektorovich - Cittavecchiano e non Lesignano (1873) written by Hvar's scientist and historian Sime Ljubić (1822-1896). In his scientific argumentation we can find descriptions and comparisons that are more typical of creating stereotype views and campanilistic rivalry, than they are for a scientific discourse. This treatise is a confirmation of the oldest campanilism on the island that still exists between Stari Grad and Hvar, two largest island's towns.
