Ultra-low mass primordial black holes (PBH), briefly dominating the expansion of the universe, would leave detectable imprints in the secondary stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB). Such a scenario leads to a characteristic doubly peaked spectrum of SGWB and strongly depends on the Hawking evaporation of such light PBHs. However, these observable signatures are significantly altered if the memory burden effect during the evaporation of PBHs is taken into account. We show that for the SGWB induced by PBH density fluctuations, the memory burden effects on the Hawking evaporation of ultra-low mass PBHs can mimic the signal arising due to the non-standard reheating epoch before PBH domination. We initiate the LISA template databank for stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds sourced by cosmic strings. We include two templates, an analytical template, which enables more flexible searches, and a numerical template derived directly from large Nambu-Goto simulations of string networks. Using searches based on these templates, we forecast the parameter space within the reach of the experiment and the precision with which their parameters will be reconstructed, provided a signal is observed. The reconstruction permits probing the Hubble expansion and new relativistic DoF in the early universe. We quantify the impact that astrophysical foregrounds can have on these searches. Finally, we discuss the impact that these observations would have on our understanding of the fundamental models behind the string networks. Overall, we prove that LISA has great potential for probing cosmic string models and may reach tensions as low as $G\mu =10^{-16} - 10^{-17} $, which translates into energy scales of the order $10^{11}~\text{GeV}$., Comment: 59 pages, 15 figures

Different computational techniques for cosmological phase transition parameters can impact the Gravitational Wave (GW) spectra predicted in a given particle physics model. To scrutinize the importance of this effect, we perform large-scale parameter scans of the dynamical real-singlet extended Standard Model using three perturbative approximations for the effective potential: the $\overline{\rm MS}$ and on-shell schemes at leading order, and three-dimensional thermal effective theory (3D EFT) at next-to-leading order. While predictions of GW amplitudes are typically unreliable in the absence of higher-order corrections, we show that the reconstructed model parameter spaces are robust up to a few percent in uncertainty. While 3D EFT is accurate from one loop order, theoretical uncertainties of reconstructed model parameters, using four-dimensional standard techniques, remain dominant over the experimental ones even for signals merely strong enough to claim a detection by LISA., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

We develop a tool for the analysis of stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds from cosmological first-order phase transitions with LISA: we initiate a template databank for these signals, prototype their searches, and forecast their reconstruction. The templates encompass the gravitational wave signals sourced by bubble collisions, sound waves and turbulence. Accounting for Galactic and extra-Galactic foregrounds, we forecast the region of the parameter space that LISA will reconstruct with better than $\sim 10\,\%$ accuracy, if certain experimental and theoretical uncertainties are solved by the time LISA flies. We illustrate the accuracy with which LISA can reconstruct the parameters on a few benchmark signals, both in terms of the template parameters and the phase transition ones. We perform real-time hydrodynamical simulations of the growth of bubbles formed during cosmological first-order phase transitions under the assumption of local thermal equilibrium. We confirm that pure hydrodynamic backreaction can lead to steady-state expansion and that bubble-wall velocity in such case agrees very well with the analytical estimates. However, this is not the generic outcome. Instead, it is much more common to observe runaways, as the early-stage dynamics right after the nucleation allow the bubble walls to achieve supersonic velocities before the heated fluid shell in front of the bubble is formed. This effect is not captured by other methods of calculation of the bubble-wall velocity which assume stationary solutions to exist at all times and would have a crucial impact on the possible generation of both baryon asymmetry and gravitational wave signals., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is the first scientific endeavour to detect and study gravitational waves from space. Slow first-order phase transitions generate large inhomogeneities that can lead to the formation of primordial black holes (PBHs). We show that the gravitational wave (GW) spectrum then consists of a primary component sourced by bubble collisions and a secondary one induced by large perturbations. The latter gives the dominant peak if $\beta/H_0 < 12$, impacting, in particular, the interpretation of the recent PTA data. This document presents a summary of the 2023 Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry Workshop hosted by CERN. The workshop brought together experts from around the world to discuss the exciting developments in large-scale atom interferometer (AI) prototypes and their potential for detecting ultralight dark matter and gravitational waves. The primary objective of the workshop was to lay the groundwork for an international TVLBAI proto-collaboration. This collaboration aims to unite researchers from different institutions to strategize and secure funding for terrestrial large-scale AI projects. The ultimate goal is to create a roadmap detailing the design and technology choices for one or more km-scale detectors, which will be operational in the mid-2030s. The detection of a stochastic Gravitational Wave (GW) background sourced by a cosmological phase transition would allow us to see the early Universe from a completely new perspective, illuminating aspects of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics and inflationary cosmology. In this study, we investigate whether the evolution of the scalar potential of a minimal SM extension after inflation can lead to a strong first-order phase transition. In particular, we focus on a BSM spectator scalar field that is non-minimally coupled to gravity and has a dynamical double-well potential. As inflation ends, the potential barrier diminishes due to the evolution of the curvature scalar. Therefore, a phase transition can proceed through the nucleation of true-vacuum bubbles that collide as they fill the Universe and produce GWs. We consider high and low scales of inflation, while also taking into account a kination period between inflation and the onset of radiation domination. With this prescription, we showcase a proof-of-concept study of a new triggering mechanism for BSM phase transitions in the early Universe, whose GW signatures could potentially be probed with future detectors., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

The dynamical map represents a fundamental concept in quantum field theory, providing a solution of the field equations in the Fock space of asymptotic fields. In this paper, we show how to express the dynamical map of a scalar field in the language of quantum effective action. This grants us new insights into the study of topological defects in quantum field theory, showing a connection between the usual least-action principle and Umezawa's boson transformation method.

The most conservative interpretation of the nHz stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) discovered by NANOGrav and other Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) Collaborations is astrophysical, namely that it originates from supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries. However, alternative cosmological models have been proposed, including cosmic strings, phase transitions, domain walls, primordial fluctuations and "audible" axions. We perform a multi-model analysis (MMA) to compare how well these different hypotheses fit the NANOGrav data, both in isolation and in combination with SMBH binaries, and address the questions: Which interpretations fit the data best, and which are disfavoured? Pulsar Timing Array collaborations have recently announced the discovery of a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) at nanohertz frequencies. We analyze the GW signals from the domination of ultra-low mass primordial black holes (PBHs) in the early universe and show that they can explain this recent discovery. This scenario requires a relatively broad peak in the power spectrum of scalar perturbations from inflation with a spectral index in a narrow range of $1.45$ to $1.6$. The resulting PBH population would have mass around $10^{8}$g, and the initial abundance $\beta_f$ lies between $10^{-10}$ and $10^{-9}$. We find that this explanation is preferred by the data over the generic model, assuming supermassive BHs as the source. These very light PBHs would decay before Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN); however, upcoming third-generation terrestrial laser interferometers would be able to test the model by observing the GW spectrum produced during the formation of the PBHs. We analyze cosmic superstring models in light of NANOGrav 15-year pulsar timing data. A good fit is found for a string tension $G \mu \sim 10^{-12} - 10^{-11}$ and a string intercommutation probability $p \sim 10^{-3} - 10^{-1}$. Extrapolation to higher frequencies assuming standard Big Bang cosmology is compatible at the 68\% CL with the current LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA upper limit on a stochastic gravitational wave background in the 10 to 100 Hz range. We study the impact of the ambient fluid on the evolution of collapsing false vacuum bubbles by simulating the dynamics of a coupled bubble-particle system. A significant increase in the mass of the particles across the bubble wall leads to a buildup of those particles inside the false vacuum bubble. We show that the backreaction of the particles on the bubble slows or even reverses the collapse. Consequently, if the particles in the true vacuum become heavier than in the false vacuum, the particle-wall interactions always decrease the compactness that the false vacuum bubbles can reach making their collapse to black holes less likely., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

We study the formation of primordial black holes (PBHs) in strongly supercooled first-order phase transitions. The mechanism is based on the presence of remnants dominated by the false vacuum that scale slower with the expansion of the Universe than their surroundings where this energy was already converted into radiation. We compute the PBH formation from these remnants including the contribution from the false vacuum and the bubble walls, by estimating the collapse using the hoop conjecture and by considering both regions collapsing immediately when entering the horizon and sub-horizon regions that collapse as their compactness grows. We show that for exponential bubble nucleation rate, $\Gamma \propto e^{\beta t}$, the primordial black hole formation implies $\beta/H \gtrsim 3.8$, where $H$ denotes the Hubble rate, if the potential energy of the false vacuum is $\Delta V \lesssim (10^{12} {\rm GeV})^4$, as otherwise a too large abundance of long-lived PBHs forms. The observed dark matter abundance can be formed in asteroid mass PBHs if $\beta/H \simeq 3.8$ and $10^5 {\rm GeV} \lesssim \Delta V^{1/4} \lesssim 10^8 {\rm GeV}$. Finally, we consider also the effect of the second order correction to the exponential nucleation rate showing that the PBH abundance is mainly determined by the average radius of the true vacuum bubbles., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures. A network of cosmic strings (CS), if present, would continue emitting gravitational waves (GW) as it evolves throughout the history of the Universe. This results in a characteristic broad spectrum making it a perfect source to infer the expansion history. In particular, a short inflationary period caused by a supercooled phase transition would cause a drop in the spectrum at frequencies corresponding to that event. However, the impact on the spectrum is similar to the ones caused by an early matter-dominated era or from particle production, making it difficult to disentangle these different physical origins. We point out that, in the case of a short inflationary period, the GW spectrum receives an additional contribution from the phase transition itself. This leads to a characteristic imprint of a peak on top of a wide plateau both visible at future GW observatories., Comment: Version matches the one published in JHEP

Terminal velocity reached by bubble walls in first order phase transitions is an important parameter determining both primordial gravitational-wave spectrum and production of baryon asymmetry in models of electroweak baryogenesis. We developed a numerical code to study the real-time evolution of expanding bubbles and investigate how their walls reach stationary states. Our results agree with profiles obtained within the so-called bag model with very good accuracy, however, not all such solutions are stable and realised in dynamical systems. Depending on the exact shape of the potential there is always a range of wall velocities where no steady state solutions exist. This behaviour in deflagrations was explained by hydrodynamical obstruction where solutions that would heat the plasma outside the wall above the critical temperature and cause local symmetry restoration are forbidden. For even more affected hybrid solutions causes are less straight forward, however, we provide a simple numerical fit allowing one to verify if a solution with a given velocity is allowed simply by computing the ratio of the nucleation temperature to the critical one for the potential in question., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, version published in PRD

Ultra-low mass primordial black holes (PBH), which may briefly dominate the energy density of the universe but completely evaporate before the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), can lead to interesting observable signatures. In our previous work, we studied the generation of a doubly peaked spectrum of induced stochastic gravitational wave background (ISGWB) for such a scenario and explored the possibility of probing a class of baryogenesis models wherein the emission of massive unstable particles from the PBH evaporation and their subsequent decay contributes to the matter-antimatter asymmetry. In this work, we extend the scope of our earlier work by including spinning PBHs and consider the emission of light relativistic dark sector particles, which contribute to the dark radiation (DR) and massive stable dark sector particles, thereby accounting for the dark matter (DM) component of the universe. The ISGWB can probe the non-thermal production of these heavy DM particles, which cannot be accessible in laboratory searches. For the case of DR, we find a novel complementarity between the measurements of $\Delta N_{\rm eff}$ from these emitted particles and the ISGWB from PBH domination. Our results indicate that the ISGWB has a weak dependence on the initial PBH spin. However, for gravitons as the DR particles, the initial PBH spin plays a significant role, and only above a critical value of the initial spin parameter $a_*$, which depends only on initial PBH mass, the graviton emission can be probed in the CMB-HD experiment. We study the possible gravitational wave signal and the viability of baryogenesis arising from the electroweak phase transition in an extension of the Standard Model (SM) by a scalar singlet field without a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We first analyze the velocity of the expanding true-vacuum bubbles during the phase transition, confirming our previous finding in the unbroken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry scenario, where the bubble wall velocity can be computed from first principles only for weak transitions with strength parameters $\alpha \lesssim 0.05$, and the Chapman-Jouguet velocity defines the maximum velocity for which the wall is stopped by the friction from the plasma. We further provide an analytical approximation to the wall velocity in the general scalar singlet scenario without $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry and test it against the results of a detailed calculation, finding good agreement. We show that in the singlet scenario with a spontaneously broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, the phase transition is always weak and we see no hope for baryogenesis. In contrast, in the case with explicit $\mathbb{Z}_2$ breaking there is a region of the parameter space producing a promising baryon yield in the presence of CP violating interactions via an effective operator involving the singlet scalar and the SM top quarks. Yet, we find that this region yields unobservable gravitational waves. Finally, we show that the promising region for baryogenesis in this model may be fully tested by direct searches for singlet-like scalars in di-boson final states at the HL-LHC, combined with present and future measurements of the electron electric dipole moment.

We estimate the gravitational wave spectra generated in strongly supercooled phase transitions by bubble collisions and fluid motion. We derive analytically in the thin-wall approximation the efficiency factor that determines the share of the energy released in the transition between the scalar field and the fluid. We perform numerical simulations including the efficiency factor as a function of bubble radius separately for all points on the bubble surfaces to take into account their different collision times. We find that the efficiency factor does not significantly change the gravitational wave spectra and show that the result can be approximated by multiplying the spectrum obtained without the efficiency factor by its value at the radius $R_{\rm eff} \simeq 5/\beta$, where $\beta$ is the approximate inverse duration of the transition. We also provide updated fits for the gravitational wave spectra produced in strongly supercooled transitions from both bubble collisions and fluid motion depending on the behaviour of the sources after the collision., Comment: published version

Hawking evaporation of primordial black holes (PBHs) can facilitate the generation of matter-antimatter asymmetry. We focus on ultra-low mass PBHs that briefly dominate the universe and evaporate before the big bang nucleosynthesis. We propose a novel test of this scenario by detecting its characteristic doubly peaked gravitational wave (GW) spectrum in future GW observatories. Here the first order adiabatic perturbation from inflation and from the isocurvature perturbations due to PBH distribution, source tensor perturbations in second-order and lead to two peaks in the induced GW background. These resonant peaks are generated at the beginning of standard radiation domination in the presence of a prior PBH-dominated era. This unique GW spectral shape would provide a smoking gun signal of non-thermal baryogenesis from evaporating PBHs, which is otherwise impossible to test in laboratory experiments due to the very high energy scales involved or the feeble interaction of the dark sector with the visible sector., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures, version accepted for publication in JHEP

We present a new approach to studies of bubble dynamics in fluids. Relying on particle-based simulations, this method is general and suitable for cases where the commonly used perfect fluid description fails. We study expanding true vacuum bubbles surrounded by free or self-interacting particles and quantify how self-interactions affect the terminal bubble wall velocity. We find that, for sufficiently strongly self-interacting fluids, local thermal equilibrium is maintained around the bubble wall and the fluid profile is similar to that obtained with the perfect fluid description., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has two scientific objectives of cosmological focus: to probe the expansion rate of the universe, and to understand stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds and their implications for early universe and particle physics, from the MeV to the Planck scale. However, the range of potential cosmological applications of gravitational wave observations extends well beyond these two objectives. This publication presents a summary of the state of the art in LISA cosmology, theory and methods, and identifies new opportunities to use gravitational wave observations by LISA to probe the universe.

We summarize the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. We study the impact of the black hole binary population currently probed by LIGO-Virgo on future searches for the primordial gravitational wave background. We estimate the foreground generated by the binaries using the observed event rate and a simple modeling of the black hole population. We subtract individually resolvable binaries from the foreground and utilize Fisher analysis to derive sensitivity curves for power-law signals including these astrophysical foregrounds. Computing the properties of the bubble wall of a cosmological first order phase transition at electroweak scale is of paramount importance for the correct prediction of the baryon asymmetry of the universe and the spectrum of gravitational waves. By means of the semi-classical formalism we calculate the velocity and thickness of the wall using as theoretical framework the scalar singlet extension of the SM with a parity symmetry and the SM effective field theory supplemented by a dimension six operator. We use these solutions to carefully predict the baryon asymmetry and the gravitational wave signals. The singlet scenario can easily accommodate the observed asymmetry but these solutions do not lead to observable effects at future gravity wave experiments. In contrast the effective field theory fails at explaining the baryon abundance due to the strict constraints from electric dipole moment experiments, however, the strongest solutions we found fall within the sensitivity of the LISA experiment. We provide a simple analytical approximation for the wall velocity which only requires calculation of the strength and temperature of the transition and works reasonably well in all models tested. We find that generically the weak transitions where the fluid approximation can be used to calculate the wall velocity and verify baryogenesis produce signals too weak to be observed in future gravitational wave experiments. Thus, we infer that GW signals produced by simple SM extensions visible in future experiments are likely to only be produced in strong transitions described by detonations with highly relativistic wall velocities.

We survey the prospective sensitivities of terrestrial and space-borne atom interferometers (AIs) to gravitational waves (GWs) generated by cosmological and astrophysical sources, and to ultralight dark matter. We discuss the backgrounds from gravitational gradient noise (GGN) in terrestrial detectors, and also binary pulsar and asteroid backgrounds in space-borne detectors. We compare the sensitivities of LIGO and LISA with those of the 100m and 1km stages of the AION terrestrial AI project, as well as two options for the proposed AEDGE AI space mission with cold atom clouds either inside or outside the spacecraft, considering as possible sources the mergers of black holes and neutron stars, supernovae, phase transitions in the early Universe, cosmic strings and quantum fluctuations in the early Universe that could have generated primordial black holes. Quasi-conformal models are an appealing scenario that can offer naturally a strongly supercooled phase transition and a period of thermal inflation in the early Universe. A crucial aspect for the viability of these models is how the Universe escapes from the supercooled state. One possibility is that thermal inflation phase ends by nucleation and percolation of true vacuum bubbles. This route is not, however, always efficient. In such case another escape mechanism, based on the growth of quantum fluctuations of the scalar field that eventually destabilize the false vacuum, becomes relevant. We study both of these cases in detail in a simple yet representative model. We determine the duration of the thermal inflation, the curvature power spectrum generated for the scales that exit horizon during the thermal inflation, and the stochastic gravitational wave background from the phase transition. We show that these gravitational waves provide an observable signal from the thermal inflation in almost the entire parameter space of interest. We study the evolution of cosmological domain walls in models with asymmetric potentials. Our research goes beyond the standard case of spontaneous breaking of an approximate symmetry. When the symmetry is explicitly broken the potential exhibits nearly degenerate minima which can lead to creation of a metastable network of domain walls. The time after which the network will decay depends on the difference of values of the potential in minima, its asymmetry around the maximum separating minima and the bias of the initial distribution of the field. Effect of asymmetry around the maximum separating minima is novel one that we study with a new type of potential. Using numerical lattice simulations we determine relative importance of these factors on decay time of networks for generic potentials. We find that even very small departures from the symmetric initial distribution case lead to rapid decay of the domain wall network. As a result creation of a long lasting network capable of producing observable gravitational wave signals is much more difficult than previously thought. On the other hand details of the shape of the potential turn out to be much less important than was expected and the evolution of network from symmetric distribution is controlled by the difference of values of the potential in the minima.

We study production of gravitational waves (GWs) in strongly supercooled cosmological phase transitions in gauge theories. We extract from two-bubble lattice simulations the scaling of the GW source, and use it in many-bubble simulations in the thin-wall limit to estimate the resulting GW spectrum. We find that in presence of the gauge field the GW source decays with bubble radius as $\propto R^{-3}$ after collisions. This leads to a GW spectrum that follows $\Omega_{\rm GW} \propto \omega^{2.3}$ at low frequencies and $\Omega_{\rm GW} \propto \omega^{-2.4}$ at high frequencies, marking a significant deviation from the popular envelope approximation., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. fixed a small mistake in the computation of the GW spectrum, minor changes in the results

However, the NANOGrav Collaboration has recently reported strong evidence for a stochastic common-spectrum process, which we interpret as a SGWB in the framework of cosmic strings. The possible NANOGrav signal would correspond to a string tension $G\mu \in (4 \times 10^{-11}, 10^{-10}) $ at the 68% confidence level, with a different frequency dependence from supermassive black hole mergers. We update predictions for the gravitational wave (GW) signal from a strongly supercooled phase transition in an illustrative classically conformal U(1)$_{B-L}$ model. We implement $\propto \gamma^2$ scaling of the friction on the bubble wall and update the estimates for the efficiency factors for GW production from bubble collisions and plasma-related sources. We take into account the fact that a small decay rate of the symmetry-breaking field may lead to brief matter-dominated era after the transition, as the field oscillates around its minimum before decaying. We find that a strong bubble collision signal occurs in a significant part of the parameter space, and that the modified redshift of the modes that re-enter the horizon during the matter-dominated period generates a characteristic tilted `plateau' in the spectrum. The GW spectrum in this model would be detectable in the low-frequency range, e.g., by LISA, and in the mid-frequency range, e.g., by AION/MAGIS and AEDGE, and in the high-frequency range by LIGO and ET. The peak frequency of the signal is limited from below by collider constraints on the mass of the U(1)$_{B-L}$ gauge boson, while at high frequencies the slow decay of the scalar field and the resulting matter-dominated era diminishes the GW signal., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

We study gravitational wave (GW) production in strongly supercooled cosmological phase transitions, taking particular care of models featuring a complex scalar field with a U$(1)$ symmetric potential. We perform lattice simulations of two-bubble collisions to properly model the scalar field gradients, and compute the GW spectrum sourced by them using the thin-wall approximation in many-bubble simulations. We find that in the U$(1)$ symmetric case the low-frequency spectrum is $\propto\omega$ whereas for a real scalar field it is $\propto\omega^3$. It is commonly assumed that the energy density of the Universe was dominated by radiation between reheating after inflation and the onset of matter domination 54,000 years later. While the abundance of light elements indicates that the Universe was radiation dominated during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), there is scant evidence that the Universe was radiation dominated prior to BBN. It is therefore possible that the cosmological history was more complicated, with deviations from the standard radiation domination during the earliest epochs. Indeed, several interesting proposals regarding various topics such as the generation of dark matter, matter-antimatter asymmetry, gravitational waves, primordial black holes, or microhalos during a nonstandard expansion phase have been recently made. We discuss the observability of circular polarisation of the stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) generated by helical turbulence following a first-order cosmological phase transition, using a model that incorporates the effects of both direct and inverse energy cascades. We explore the strength of the gravitational-wave signal and the dependence of its polarisation on the helicity fraction, $\zeta_*$, the strength of the transition, $\alpha$, the bubble size, $R_*$, and the temperature, $T_*$, at which the transition finishes. We calculate the prospective signal-to-noise ratios of the SGWB strength and polarisation signals in the LISA experiment, exploring the parameter space in a way that is minimally sensitive to the underlying particle physics model. We find that discovery of SGWB polarisation is generally more challenging than measuring the total SGWB signal, but would be possible for appropriately strong transitions with large bubble sizes and a substantial polarisation fraction., Comment: 31 pages, 8 Figures

We survey systematically the general parametrisations of particle-physics models for a first-order phase transition in the early universe, including models with polynomial potentials both with and without barriers at zero temperature, and Coleman-Weinberg-like models with potentials that are classically scale-invariant. We distinguish three possibilities for the transition - detonations, deflagrations and hybrids - and consider sound waves and turbulent mechanisms for generating gravitational waves during the transitions in these models, checking in each case the requirement for successful percolation. We argue that in models without a zero-temperature barrier and in scale-invariant models the period during which sound waves generate gravitational waves lasts only for a fraction of a Hubble time after a generic first-order cosmological phase transition, whereas it may last longer in some models with a zero-temperature barrier that feature severe supercooling. A standard expectation of primordial cosmological inflation is that it dilutes all relics created before its onset to unobservable levels. We present a counterexample to this expectation by demonstrating that a network of cosmic strings diluted by inflation can regrow to a level that is potentially observable today in gravitational waves~(GWs). We study strongly supercooled cosmological phase transitions. We perform numerical lattice simulations of two-bubble collisions and demonstrate that, depending on the scalar potential, in the collision the field can either bounce to a false vacuum or remain oscillating around the true vacuum. Cosmic string networks offer one of the best prospects for detection of cosmological gravitational waves (GWs). The combined incoherent GW emission of a large number of string loops leads to a stochastic GW background (SGWB), which encodes the properties of the string network. In this paper we analyze the ability of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) to measure this background, considering leading models of the string networks. We find that LISA will be able to probe cosmic strings with tensions $G\mu \gtrsim \mathcal{O}(10^{-17})$, improving by about $6$ orders of magnitude current pulsar timing arrays (PTA) constraints, and potentially $3$ orders of magnitude with respect to expected constraints from next generation PTA observatories. We include in our analysis possible modifications of the SGWB spectrum due to different hypotheses regarding cosmic history and the underlying physics of the string network. These include possible modifications in the SGWB spectrum due to changes in the number of relativistic degrees of freedom in the early Universe, the presence of a non-standard equation of state before the onset of radiation domination, or changes to the network dynamics due to a string inter-commutation probability less than unity. In the event of a detection, LISA's frequency band is well-positioned to probe such cosmic events. We propose in this White Paper a concept for a space experiment using cold atoms to search for ultra-light dark matter, and to detect gravitational waves in the frequency range between the most sensitive ranges of LISA and the terrestrial LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA/INDIGO experiments. This interdisciplinary experiment, called Atomic Experiment for Dark Matter and Gravity Exploration (AEDGE), will also complement other planned searches for dark matter, and exploit synergies with other gravitational wave detectors. We give examples of the extended range of sensitivity to ultra-light dark matter offered by AEDGE, and how its gravitational-wave measurements could explore the assembly of super-massive black holes, first-order phase transitions in the early universe and cosmic strings. AEDGE will be based upon technologies now being developed for terrestrial experiments using cold atoms, and will benefit from the space experience obtained with, e.g., LISA and cold atom experiments in microgravity. We study the generation of intergalactic magnetic fields in two models for first-order phase transitions in the early Universe that have been studied previously in connection with the generation of gravitational waves (GWs): the Standard Model supplemented by an $|H|^6$ operator (SM+$H^6$) and a classically scale-invariant model with an extra gauged U(1) $B - L$ symmetry (SM$_{B-L}$). We consider contributions to magnetic fields generated by bubble collisions and by turbulence in the primordial plasma, and we consider the hypotheses that helicity is seeded in the gauge field or kinetically. We study the conditions under which the intergalactic magnetic fields generated may be larger than the lower bounds from blazar observations, and correlate them with the observability of GWs and possible collider signatures. In the SM+$H^6$ model bubble collisions alone cannot yield large enough magnetic fields, whereas turbulence may do so. In the SM$_{B-L}$ model bubble collisions and turbulence may both yield magnetic fields above the blazar bound unless the B$-$L gauge boson is very heavy. We derive efficiency factors for the production of gravitational waves through bubble collisions and plasma-related sources in strong phase transitions, and find the conditions under which the bubble collisions can contribute significantly to the signal. We use lattice simulations to clarify the dependence of the colliding bubbles on their initial state. We illustrate our findings in two examples, the Standard Model with an extra $|H|^6$ interaction and a classically scale-invariant $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ extension of the Standard Model. The contribution to the GW spectrum from bubble collisions is found to be negligible in the $|H|^6$ model, whereas it can play an important role in parts of the parameter space in the scale-invariant $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ model. In both cases the sound-wave period is much shorter than a Hubble time, suggesting a significant amplification of the turbulence-sourced signal. We find, however, that the peak of the plasma-sourced spectrum is still produced by sound waves with the slower-falling turbulence contribution becoming important off-peak., Comment: published version

Most cosmological models predict that the universe was hot and dense at the early stages of it's evolution. In this paper we analyse the influence of the thermal bath of Standard Model particles on the dynamics of cosmological Higgs domain walls. This manuscript poses an~extension of our earlier work in which we investigated the evolution of networks of Higgs domain walls neglecting the impact of temperature variation. Using the thermally corrected effective potential of Standard Model we have found that both the position of the local maximum $h_{max}$ separating minima and the width of domain walls strongly depend on temperature $T$. For temperatures higher than $10^{10}\; \textrm{GeV}$ they respectively increase proportionally and decrease inverse proportionally to the increasing temperature. Thus, the energy scale of the problem follows the value of temperature. Our numerical lattice simulations based on the PRS algorithm reveal that Higgs domain walls in the presence of the background thermal bath are highly unstable and decay shortly after formation. Moreover we have found that the fraction of horizons produced by inflation in which Higgs field expectation value is higher then $h_{max}$ needs to be very low in order for the evolution of the~network of the domain walls to end in the electroweak vacuum. This means that Higgs domain walls necessarily were very rare objects and their average energy density was very small. As a result, the domain walls can not significantly effect cosmological observables.

We perform a global fit of the extended scalar singlet model with a fermionic dark matter (DM) candidate. Using the most up-to-date results from the $\mathit{Planck}$ measured DM relic density, direct detection limits from the XENON1T (2018) experiment, electroweak precision observables and Higgs searches at colliders, we constrain the 7-dimensional model parameter space. We also find regions in the model parameter space where a successful electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG) can be viable. This allows us to compute the gravitational wave (GW) signals arising from the phase transition, and discuss the potential discovery prospects of the model at current and future GW experiments. Our global fit places a strong upper $\mathit{and}$ lower limit on the second scalar mass, the fermion DM mass and the scalar-fermion DM coupling. In agreement with previous studies, we find that our model can simultaneously yield a strong first-order phase transition and saturate the observed DM abundance. What is the maximum possible strength of a first-order electroweak phase transition and the resulting gravitational wave (GW) signal? While naively one might expect that supercooling could increase the strength of the transition to very high values, for strong supercooling the Universe is no longer radiation-dominated and the vacuum energy of the unstable minimum of the potential dominates the expansion, which can jeopardize the successful completion of the phase transition. After providing a general treatment for the nucleation, growth and percolation of broken phase bubbles during a first-order phase transition that encompasses the case of significant supercooling, we study the conditions for successful bubble percolation and completion of the electroweak phase transition in theories beyond the Standard Model featuring polynominal potentials. For such theories, these conditions set a lower bound on the temperature of the transition. Since the plasma cannot be significantly diluted, the resulting GW signal originates mostly from sound waves and turbulence in the plasma, rather than bubble collisions. We find the peak frequency of the GW signal from the phase transition to be generically $f \gtrsim 10^{-4}$ Hz. We also study the condition for GW production by sound waves to be long-lasting (GW source active for approximately a Hubble time), showing it is generally not fulfilled in concrete scenarios. Because of this the sound wave GW signal could be weakened, with turbulence setting in earlier, resulting in a smaller overall GW signal as compared to current literature predictions., Comment: published version

Many motivated extensions of the Standard Model predict the existence of cosmic strings. Gravitational waves originating from the dynamics of the resulting cosmic string network have the ability to probe many otherwise inaccessible properties of the early universe. In this study we show how the spectrum of gravitational waves from a cosmic string network can be used to test the equation of state of the early universe prior to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN).
