The objective of this study was to monitor the training loads (TL) and well-being of elite rhythmic gymnastics (RG) athletes, as well as compare these variables between starters and reserve gymnasts during 25 weeks of training. Ten athletes from the Brazilian national RG team (17.4 ± 1.1 y of age) were monitored during the general preparatory period (GPP), specific preparatory period (SPP), and pre-competitive period (PCP). The internal TL was quantified with the use of sessional ratings of perceived exertion (sRPE). We assessed well-being daily with a well-being scale. The TL, duration, monotony, and strain were calculated weekly. We found that the internal TL and session durations were 9242 ± 2511 AU and 2014 ± 450 min, respectively. The internal TL, strain, and monotony were greater in the PCP than in the GPP and SPP for starters. In the SPP, there were statistical differences in internal TL (p = 0.036) and strain (p = 0.027) between starters and reserves. In the PCP, there were also statistical differences between starters vs. reserves athletes regarding internal TL (p = 0.027) and strain (p = 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in well-being between the periods assessed. In conclusion, RG athletes display a higher TL magnitude during the PCP, whereas only reporting non-significant minor variations in well-being. In addition, there is a discrepancy in the TL between starters and reserves.

Conclusão: A técnica descrita gera resultados permanentes e satisfatórios. ABSTRACT Introduction: In the continued search for increasingly expressive results, plastic surgeons are combining established techniques with new intraop erative times. This article describes a surgical technique associated with rhytidoplasties based on the resection of the lateral portion of the orbicu laris oculi muscle, followed by grafting the muscle itself, however inverted, on the resected area. Method: In a 5year period, 54 rhytidoplasties associ ated with the described technique were performed. Results: The follow up in the late postoperative period (5 years) was satisfactory, with the per manent disappearance of periocular rhytides due to the neutralization of the forces exerted by the muscle in this area. There was no dissatisfaction on the part of the patients. Consequently, the procedure had excellent re sults in the resolution of periocular rhytides and in lifting the caudal part of the eyebrow in relation to the orbit. Conclusion: The technique described generates permanent and satisfactory results.

- Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: The main complaint of patients visiting plastic surgery clinics for rhinoplasty is the nasal dorsum. Cartilage grafts are routinely used in the nasal radix to reduce inappropriate nasofacial angles or redefine the transition point of the radix and then lengthen or shorten the nose. The aim of this study is to present cartilage nasal radix grafts prepared with diced cartilage and introduced to the radix with the aid of a syringe. Method: We evaluated the surgical procedure and the results obtained by analyzing the medical records of 37 patients who underwent this surgery between May 1, 2011 and May 1, 2013. Results: In all cases, we achieved the expected result of successfully increasing the nasal radix. No graft absorption was clinically detected. Conclusion: The use of a diced cartilage graft as described in this study effectively increased the nasal radix.

INTRODUCTION: The increase in survival of large burn patients during the acute phase has also increased the prevalence of esthetic-functional scarring sequelae. With regard to the clinical relevance of subcicatricial fat grafting, the actual changes after the procedure need to be understood and microscopically evaluated. METHODS: Eight patients with alcohol burns, with an average time after burn of 12 months (10-14 months), who underwent subcicatricial fat grafting associated with rigotomy were selected. Skin biopsies were performed in before and 14 weeks after operation. The following issues were assessed: 1) esthetic-functional improvement of the scar, by using the Vancouver scar scale; 2) quantitative and qualitative analyses of cicatricial collagen; 3) immunohistochemical analysis of scar vascularization with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) antibody. RESULTS: When comparing the pre- and post-fat grafting period, a significant esthetic-functional improvement and, microscopically, a redefinition of the boundaries of the papillary and reticular dermis were observed, as well as quantitative reduction and reorganization of collagen, in addition to the decrease of the vascularization of the tissue through immunohistochemical analysis. CONCLUSION: The basic principle of the whole physiological healing process is to reestablish local homeostasis, that is, excessively intensified steps that lead to severe clinical changes. When subcicatricial fat grafting associated with rigotomy was performed, qualitative and quantitative improvements of the tissue were verified in this study. Thus, it becomes evident that this procedure can complement the treatment of cicatricial pathologies.

Purpose This study aims to explore whether the application of a positive food safety (FS) climate reduces the number of FS violations in the hospitality industry. Design/methodology/approach The sample comprised 271 food handlers in six hotels and 12 restaurants in Brazil. FS climate and risk perceptions were evaluated by self-applicable questionnaires. FS violations were evaluated through observations during the workday. Structural equation modeling with partial least squares was used to test four hypotheses. Findings The findings of this study suggest that a positive FS climate reduces the number of FS violations. It was also observed that risk perception moderated the relationship between FS climate and violations. Physical structure was also identified as a predictor of adequate FS practices. Practical implications The results indicate that restaurant owners and managers should invest in actions toward a positive FS climate. Originality/value It is evident that FS climate elements should be evaluated together, providing a better understanding of the organizational climate and FS culture. Additionally, the bi-directional effect of risk perception was discussed, affecting and being affected by adequate FS practices. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to model the FS climate in the hospitality sector and discuss the implications.

An abundant population of Ucides cordatus swamp crabs is present at Lameirao Ecological Station (Brazil), a tropical ecosystem man-made with discharges of domestic, industrial and agricultural pollutants. Concentrations of heavy metals in water, sediment and muscle tissues, gills, hepatopancreas and exoskeleton present in crustaceans were analyzed. The results showed variations in the concentrations of all metals according to precipitation, tide and physicochemical factors. This fact possibly influenced the results of bioconcentration (BFC > 1), indicating a tendency of bioaccumulation according to environmental conditions. We also found a high accumulation of metals in female specimens. However, regardless of gender, we found a reduction in metal concentrations in all tissues analyzed during the period of ecdysis. In this study, we highlight the ecological role of U. cordatus in mangrove ecosystems and its importance in transferring pollutants to the upper trophic levels of the mangrove community, and even to man.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception of risk by food handlers in the food services of the tourism sector. One structured methodological instrument was used to analyze the risk perception of 108 food handlers from 19 establishments in a tourist region in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The highest score was related to the subject “Integrated pest control” and the lowest level was related to “Eating soft-cooked eggs”. Differences (p < 0.05) were observed among the levels of risk perception, making it possible to form three sub-groups concerning the questions. The central topic of the first sub-group was safety aspects in food production (I), the second related to sanitation operations (II) and the third to integrated pest control (III). Sub-groups II and III presented the greatest level of perceived risk. Differences (p < 0.05) between the level of risk perception and the socio-demographic variables were identified. Women showed greater risk perception compared to men. The results can provide important information for public and private programs, improving development of institutional strategies directed at food safety.

The production of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Brazil exhibits the highest growth rate in the world and represents approximately 45% of the total fish production. The objective of the present study was to assess the risk for human health due the consumption of tilapia farmed in net cages in eight aquaculture parks in Brazil. The concentrations of pesticides (40 compounds), metals (Mn, Ni, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Sn), arsenic, and cyanotoxins (microcystins) were evaluated in 16 fish from each park. Among analyzed pesticides, pyraclostrobin (0.18–0.32 mg/kg) and fenthion (0.0026–0.0037 mg/kg) exhibited values above the limit of quantification in the tilapia from Aracoiaba, Castanhao, and Ilha Solteira. The highest concentrations of As (0.44 μg/g) in fish tissues were found in Juara, Mn (0.21 μg/g) in Castanhao, and Zi (11.5 μg/g) were found in Tres Marias. Furnas and Linhares exhibited the lowest metal concentrations. The estimated daily intake of muscle by the average Brazilian with 70 kg body weight is below the reference dose for all studied metals in all parks. Total free microcystins showed an accumulation pattern (muscle < gill < liver). The highest concentration in muscle was found in Castanhao (1043 μg/kg) samples. The results showed that fish exhibited metal, As, and pesticide tolerable daily intake (TDI) below the limit and pose low risk for human consumption. Otherwise, TDI for microcystins in fish of all studied parks was above the maximum level recommended by the World Health Organization, indicating that there exists a toxicity risk of fish consumption.

Pirarucu is an obligatory air breathing fish native to the Amazon basin. In rearing conditions it reaches up to 10 kg in one year, being one of the fish with the greatest potential for farming in the Amazon. The aim of this study was to verify stress responses in pirarucu during routine aquaculture practices. Three experiments were carried out: 1) transport; 2) crowding; and 3) exposure to ammonia. Parameters of the energy metabolism (glucose and lactate), hormonal (cortisol), and hematological (hematocrit) were analyzed. All experiments caused alterations in the physiological parameters of pirarucu. The stress responses during transport are similar to crowding. However, the magnitude of the responses to crowding was higher. Ammonia exposure does not cause an immediate alteration in the physiological parameters, with a latency period in the stress responses. From the observed results it is possible to conclude that alterations in the metabolic parameters occur during the more intense management periods and probably can be prevented adopting best management practices.

Rhyzopertha dominica is an insect pest that feeds on a wide variety of grains and stored cereals, producing economical losses. Bioenergetics studies on insects are necessary to eventually plan strategies to reduce pest infestation on stored grains with methods other than insecticides. Modified atmosphere treatments, where insects are exposed to either low O2 or high CO2 concentrations, or both, can be used as alternatives. In this research, R. dominica was subjected to a modified atmosphere environment (MA) consisting of 5% O2 and 10% CO2 for 24 h and was compared with normoxia insects (21% O2 and 0.02% CO2). Mitochondria from the whole insect were isolated and their protein content was analyzed by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE) using OFFGEL Fractionator equipment and 12% polyacrylamide gels electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Lactate concentration, cytochrome c oxidase (COX) and ATPase activities were measured. Lactate concentration was 29% higher in R. dominica exposed to MA versus normoxia. 2-D PAGE and LC MS/MS revealed the presence of a heat shock protein (hsp60), an actin fragment, and ATP synthase α and β catalytic subunits. Activity levels of COX and ATPase were reduced by 58 and 59%, respectively, in MA versus normoxia. Therefore, R. dominica may have shifted into a hypo-metabolic state because oxygen intake was insufficient to maintain enzymatic activity. This scenario would ultimately result in a decrease in substrate concentration (oxygen) and a reduction in electron transport chain complex activity. Thus, eventually, this knowledge can be use to develop novel environmentally friendly alternatives to eradicate or reduce pests in stored grains.

In today’s news deluge, it can often be overwhelming to understand the significance of a news article or verify the facts within. One approach to address this challenge is to identify relevant data so that crucial statistics or facts can be highlighted for the user to easily digest, and thus improve the user’s comprehension of the news story in a larger context. In this paper, we look toward structured tables on the Web, especially the high quality data tables from Wikipedia, to assist in news understanding. Specifically, we aim to automatically find tables related to a news article. For that, we leverage the content and entities extracted from news articles and their matching tables to fine-tune a Bidirectional Transformers (BERT) model. The resulting model is, therefore, an encoder tailored for article-to-table match. To find the matching tables for a given news article, the fine-tuned BERT model encodes each table in the corpus and the news article into their respective embedding vectors. The tables with the highest cosine similarities to the news article in this new representation space are considered the possible matches. Comprehensive experimental analyses show that the new approach significantly outperforms the baselines over a large, weakly-labeled, dataset obtained from Web click logs as well as a small, crowdsourced, evaluation set. Specifically, our approach achieves near 90% accuracy@5 as opposed to baselines varying between 30% and 64%.

The aim of this study was to determine selected molecular biomarkers of iron ore contamination in Epinephelus marginatus. Molecular biomarkers were tested by checking the relative expression of genes involved in oxidative stress, trace element regulation, and cellular damage, by RT-qPCR. Iron ore exposure caused the downregulation of ferroportin (FP) gene expression and a significant upregulation in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) genes. Iron ore affects gene expression in E. marginatus liver, indicating that it can potentially induce toxic effects in fish. Moreover, this altered gene expression pattern may be applied in monitoring iron ore contamination in marine environments.

On November 5th, 2015, the Fundão Dam collapsed dumping more than 50 million/m3 of iron ore tailings, enriched with metals, into the Doce River channel. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reproductive biology and histological damage in Astyanax lacustris exposed to the metals from the dam collapse. The study was carried out at Doce River, in Espírito Santo State, Brazil. Monthly samplings were carried out for a year. Astyanax lacustris had multiple spawning: females reproductive peak was in September, October, November, and December; and males between September, October, January, and February. There was a latency in the formation of gonads. For male gonads, it was necessary a 6 cm growth for it to increase from 30% to 50% and 4 cm for female gonads to increase from 40% to 50%. There is a positive correlation between gonad’s concentration of Al and Fe and the rate of histological damage in females. Male gonads had a high rate of immature cells invading the cell lumen (47.36%) and female gonads showed higher frequency of atresia (39.64%). Fish exposed to the contaminated water showed high gonad histological damage. The observed changes can directly influence the organism development and reproduction in the long run, thus affecting A. lacustris population present in the region.

This study was partially funded by CAPES, financial code 001 Abstract: This study aims to explore whether the application of a positive food safety (FS) climate reduces the number of FS violations in the hospitality industry. The sample comprised 271 food handlers in six hotels and 12 restaurants in Brazil. FS climate and risk perceptions were evaluated by self-applicable questionnaires. FS violations were evaluated through observations during the workday. Structural equation modeling with partial least squares was used to test four hypotheses. The findings of this study suggest that a positive FS climate reduces the number of FS violations. It was also observed that risk perception moderated the relationship between FS climate and violations. Physical structure was also identified as a predictor of adequate FS practices. The results indicate that restaurant owners and managers should invest in actions toward a positive FS climate. It is evident that FS climate elements should be evaluated together, providing a better understanding of the organizational climate and FS culture. Additionally, the bi-directional effect of risk perception was discussed, affecting and being affected by adequate FS practices. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to model the FS climate in the hospitality sector and discuss the implications COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DE PESSOAL DE NÍVEL SUPERIOR - CAPES CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQ FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESP Fechado

- Abstract
Introduction: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by slow and progressive loss of cognition, which affects mostly elderly people, its prevalence and disabling outcome promote a strong financial impact. Objectives: To present the profile of expenses with hospitalizations by the AD in São Paulo (SP), between 2011 and 2020, through the morbidity list of the CID10-G30, correlating with the character of care, average length of stay, values of professional and hospital services and average value for hospitalizations. Design and setting: This is an ecological, descriptive, retrospective and quantitative study. Methods: Data were collected in the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH-SUS). Results: In SP, between 2011 and 2020, there were 4126 admissions for AD, with a predominance of emergency care (74.5%). Spending for hospitalizations was approximately R $ 7.5 million, hospital services accounted for approximately 91.3% of total costs, while professional services accounted for 8.7%. Elective services had an average stay of 61.7 days and corresponded to 63.1% of total expenses, urgent services had an average stay of 12 days and 36.9% of total expenses. The average value per hospitalization was R $ 1,824.92. Conclusions: More than R $ 7.5 million has been spent on AD in the last decade in SP. Elective care had an average stay five times longer and with the costs for hospital services accounted for most of these expenses.

This paper presents a study about some aspects of the influence of population diversity on the performance of the Differential Evolution technique. In order to accomplish this, the referred algorithm is tested with different benchmark functions widely used in the literature, and the performance results are analyzed and discussed by associating changes in the population diversity with changes in the evolution of the best solution over the generations. The objective of this work is to investigate the pattern of diversity behavior throughout the optimization process through graphs results and, then, evaluate how sensitive is the technique performance when associated with the population diversity behavior. This work can assist the implementation of new operators and strategies, which will permit the Differential Evolution technique to have a better performance.

The goal of this note was to evaluate the effect of cage volume on the productivity of juvenile tambaqui during second growth phase. Tambaqui juveniles were raised for 60 days on a density of 300 fish/m³, in two different volumes cage: 1 and 6 m³. We evaluated growth and productivity parameters. There are no differences in fish weight and length. The coefficient of variation of length was significantly lower for fish in the small volume cage. There was no differences in survival, volume production, and weight gain between treatments. Fish from the larger volume cage were significantly more efficient in food conversion. The second growth phase may be undertaken in both cage volumes without losses to fish farmers.

The Lippia alba essential oil (EO) is a fish anesthetic immiscible in water and commonly used diluted in ethanol. We evaluated the effectiveness of surfactant use with Lippia alba EO in the anesthesia of Oreochromis niloticus, as well as its toxicity in fish and mammals. The EO was extracted by hydrodistillation and the fish were exposed to anesthesia at the concentration of 250 μL/L for 10 min with the surfactants polysorbate 20 (T20), polysorbate 80 (T80), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and ethanol. We also evaluated fish recovery and anesthetic safety margin after exposure for 10, 20, and 30 min. To assess the surfactants’ toxicity in mammals, Mus musculus (mice) received the same treatments by gavage. The main constituents of the Lippia alba EO were linalool (42.36%), geraniol (12.46%), neral (10.7%), and limonene (7.45%). Deeper anesthesia was faster in the T20 (60 ± 2.9 s) and T80 (272 ± 21 s) treatment groups, while recovery time for T80 was longer (596 ± 47 s). All treatments showed a good safety margin, without mortality. The genotoxic effects caused by surfactants in mammals and fish were at similar levels to those found in the ethanol treatment. Therefore, this study demonstrated that the use of surfactants T20 and T80 in Oreochromis niloticus anesthesia presented neither a reduction nor a considerable increase of the toxicity when compared to the commonly used ethanol; however, an increase in anesthetic effectiveness was observed throughout the experiment.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic is the major healthcare concern around the world. The infection is especially severe to those with immune system suppression, including patients with cancer. In order to mitigate the negative effects of COVID-19, guidelines have been developed by societies worldwide to review oncology care during this pandemic time. Neoadjuvant endocrine therapy (NET) is a well-stablished option for hormone positive (HR) HER2 negative breast cancer and showed a positive response in breast conservative surgery with substantially less toxicity. Compared to chemotherapy, the NET cost is lower, and its administration is easier, due to less medical visits. Even with remarkable advantages, NET remains taking less place in treatments than it might have. Periods of humanity crisis, such as World Wars and other pandemics, boosted the development of science and established many treatments, which are currently practiced. New data generated during the COVID-19 outbreak can inspire more trials comparing chemotherapy to endocrine therapy within the neoadjuvant setting. The purpose of this letter is to suggest NET as a safe low toxicity treatment strategy for breast cancer, not only to postpone breast cancer surgery during the pandemic, but also to become a standard therapy, a flame kept burning crossing the COVID-19 border.

This study aimed to evaluate the interaction of the food safety culture (FSC) with the risk of foodborne diseases (FBD) in food services. The study is characterized as cross-sectional and was divided into three stages. In the first stage, the focus was on the understanding of consumer risk perceptions regarding the characteristics of restaurants. The second stage was an exploratory analysis of the elements of the FSC in restaurants with different health profiles. The third step was the proposal of an inferential model of the food safety climate, reducing the number of violations of good practices. In total, 265 consumers, 63 managers, 333 handlers from 32 restaurants in the metropolitan region of Campinas, SP - Brazil participated in the study. The elements of the FSC were evaluated (considering the techno-managerial and human routes), which are: management systems, styles and process; Desktop; leadership; Communication; commitment; and risk perceptions, including regulatory and labor pressure. These elements were assessed through specific questionnaires. On the technical-managerial route, restaurants were categorized as low-risk restaurants (RBR) and high-risk restaurants (RAR) by foodborne diseases (FBD) based on the application of a validated checklist. A structured questionnaire was used to assess knowledge about food safety and the perception of risk of FBD by consumers, food handlers, and managers. In the first stage, both food handlers and consumers declared that they were less subject to FBD than their peers. In the case of consumers, a similar risk was attributed both to the preparation of their meals and to lunch and dinner in the restaurants where they were interviewed, with no optimistic bias in this case. This shows that they incorporated a feeling of affection and identity to the place, corresponding to making their meals at home. In step two, the RBRs showed greater maturity of the FSC with less health risk, more adequate physical structure, higher job satisfaction, better organizational commitment, and FSC congruent with the technical-managerial and human route. It was observed that when the elements of the FSC are well structured in food services, factors such as commitment, job satisfaction, and the FSC are more satisfactory for proper hygiene practices. In step three, a structured equation model was developed. It was observed that the food safety climate reduces the number of violations of good practices in restaurants. It was also observed that the perception of risk has a moderating effect on the relationship between SA climate and violations of good practices. The higher the perception of risk, the higher the effect of the food safety climate on violations. The results demonstrate that improving the food safety climate is an effective strategy to improve food safety. Based on the results, it is possible to state that there is a need for effective interventions in the area of food safety since the consumer trusts the food services he/she attends he/she may be less careful in his/her practices. Besides, it was observed that FSC and SA climate is related to adequate and safe practices in food handling Doutorado Consumo e Qualidade de Alimentos Doutor em Alimentos e Nutrição CAPES 1684391 CNPQ 403528/2016-0
