1. Rotation-induced phase transition in planar continuous helicity gas

Abstract

In this paper, we investigate the thermodynamics of an ideal gas of classical particles with continuous helicity in three-dimensional Minkowski space. Using the one-particle distribution function for a particle with continuous helicity, we obtain expressions for the chemical potential, angular momentum, and entropy of the gas. We show that such a system placed in a rotating container can be in two phases: rotating and non-rotating. We describe the conditions for the phase transition and examine the phase diagram of the gas. It is found that at low angular velocities, the rotating phase can exist only in the form of metastable states. A feature of metastable states with low angular velocities is a negative angular momentum., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We consider a statistical mechanics and thermodynamics of a rotating ideal gas of classical relativistic particles with nonzero mass and spin. Applying the Gibbs theory of canonical ensembles for a system rotating with constant angular velocity, we obtain the one-particle distribution function by positions, momenta, and spin variables. By computing the partition function, we obtain various thermodynamic quantities of slowly rotating gas. Both the statistical and thermodynamic approaches demonstrate the polarization of spinning degree of freedom, with the majority of spins being directed along the angular velocity vector. This confirms the presence of chiral effects in the system., Comment: 27 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

ObjectiveEpratuzumab, a monoclonal antibody that targets CD22, modulates B cell signaling without substantial reductions in the number of B cells. The aim of this study was to report the results of 2 phase III multicenter randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, the EMBODY 1 and EMBODY 2 trials, assessing the efficacy and safety of epratuzumab in patients with moderately to severely active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).MethodsPatients met ≥4 of the American College of Rheumatology revised classification criteria for SLE, were positive for antinuclear antibodies and/or anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies, had an SLE Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K) score of ≥6 (increased disease activity), had British Isles Lupus Assessment Group 2004 index (BILAG-2004) scores of grade A (severe disease activity) in ≥1 body system or grade B (moderate disease activity) in ≥2 body systems (in the mucocutaneous, musculoskeletal, or cardiorespiratory domains), and were receiving standard therapy, including mandatory treatment with corticosteroids (5-60 mg/day). BILAG-2004 grade A scores in the renal and central nervous system domains were excluded. Patients were randomized 1:1:1 to receive either placebo, epratuzumab 600 mg every week, or epratuzumab 1,200 mg every other week, with infusions delivered for the first 4 weeks of each 12-week dosing cycle, for 4 cycles. Patients across all 3 treatment groups also continued with their standard therapy. The primary end point was the response rate at week 48 according to the BILAG-based Combined Lupus Assessment (BICLA) definition, requiring improvement in the BILAG-2004 score, no worsening in the BILAG-2004 score, SLEDAI-2K score, or physician's global assessment of disease activity, and no disallowed changes in concomitant medications. Patients who discontinued the study medication were classified as nonresponders.ResultsIn the EMBODY 1 and EMBODY 2 trials of epratuzumab, 793 patients and 791 patients, respectively, were randomized, 786 (99.1%) and 788 (99.6%), respectively, received study medication, and 528 (66.6%) and 533 (67.4%), respectively, completed the study. There was no statistically significant difference in the primary end point between the groups, with the week 48 BICLA response rates being similar between the epratuzumab groups and the placebo group (response rates ranging from 33.5% to 39.8%). No new safety signals were identified.ConclusionIn patients with moderate or severely active SLE, treatment with epratuzumab + standard therapy did not result in improvements in response rates over that observed in the placebo + standard therapy group.

12. Statistical Bug Isolation for Consensus Systems

Abstract

The testing of consensus systems has received growing attention and recent testing tools generate many faulty executions. However, there is a lack of methods that automatically analyze these outputs to identify the root causes of the bugs they found. This paper presents Isolation, a statistical bug isolation algorithm that uses message-based predicates to discriminate between different faults. We applied our method to executions of the XRP Ledger blockchain and evaluated its performance. Abstract

Byzantine fault-tolerant algorithms promise agreement on a correct value, even if a subset of processes can deviate from the algorithm arbitrarily. While these algorithms provide strong guarantees in theory, in practice, protocol bugs and implementation mistakes may still cause them to go wrong. This paper introduces ByzzFuzz, a simple yet effective method for automatically finding errors in implementations of Byzantine fault-tolerant algorithms through randomized testing. ByzzFuzz detects fault-tolerance bugs by injecting randomly generated network and process faults into their executions. To navigate the space of possible process faults, ByzzFuzz introduces small-scope message mutations which mutate the contents of the protocol messages by applying small changes to the original message either in value (e.g., by incrementing the round number) or in time (e.g., by repeating a proposal value from a previous message). We find that small-scope mutations, combined with insights from the testing and fuzzing literature, are effective at uncovering protocol logic and implementation bugs in real-world fault-tolerant systems. We implemented ByzzFuzz and applied it to test the production implementations of two popular blockchain systems, Tendermint and Ripple, and an implementation of the seminal PBFT protocol. ByzzFuzz detected several bugs in the implementation of PBFT, a potential liveness violation in Tendermint, and materialized two theoretically described vulnerabilities in Ripple’s XRP Ledger Consensus Algorithm. Abstract

Construction and paving of road infrastructures is on the rise globally. Roads have many negative impacts on the environment, including changes and damages to landscape connectivity, fragmentation and disrupting of ecological corridors, loss of habitats, air pollution, noise pollution and light pollution . Here we aimed to examine the impacts of the construction of a major road (national Highway 6 in Israel, 188 km long) on landscape fragmentation. To this end we mapped the land cover at three-time steps: 1997 (before the construction of the road began), 2009 and 2019, quantifying both patch-based metrics (using Frgastats), the continuous metrics of landscape connectivity (using Circuitscape) and landscape continuity, adapting a before-after-control-impact methodology. Analyzing changes in those metrics for sections of the road based on their time of construction and on the distance from the highway, we found that most changes took place within a distance of up to 1 km from the new highway, starting after road construction began. We also found that the patch-based metrics and the continuous metrics were weakly correlated. We conclude that each of those different approaches has its merits and limitations, that they are complementary and that jointly they provide us with better understanding of landscape changes.

Abstract

We consider a statistical mechanics of a rotating ideal gas of classical relativistic particles with nonzero mass and spin. Applying the Gibbs theory of canonical ensembles for a system rotating with constant angular velocity, we obtain the one-particle distribution function by positions, momenta, and spins. The model demonstrates the polarization of spinning degree of freedom by rotation, with the majority of spins being directed along the angular velocity vector. The rotation polarizability of the gas is explicitly found as the function of temperature and position with respect to the rotation axis. The results of the article demonstrate that the classical theory of spin is a useful tool for study of chiral effects in rotating gases., 37 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI)‐based diagnostic algorithms have achieved ambitious aims through automated image pattern recognition. For neurological disorders, this includes neurodegeneration and inflammation. Scalable imaging technology for big data in neurology is optical coherence tomography (OCT). We highlight that OCT changes observed in the retina, as a window to the brain, are small, requiring rigorous quality control pipelines. There are existing tools for this purpose. Firstly, there are human‐led validated consensus quality control criteria (OSCAR‐IB) for OCT. Secondly, these criteria are embedded into OCT reporting guidelines (APOSTEL). The use of the described annotation of failed OCT scans advances machine learning. This is illustrated through the present review of the advantages and disadvantages of AI‐based applications to OCT data. The neurological conditions reviewed here for the use of big data include Alzheimer disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson disease, and epilepsy. It is noted that while big data is relevant for AI, ownership is complex. For this reason, we also reached out to involve representatives from patient organizations and the public domain in addition to clinical and research centers. The evidence reviewed can be grouped in a five‐point expansion of the OSCAR‐IB criteria to embrace AI (OSCAR‐AI). The review concludes by specific recommendations on how this can be achieved practically and in compliance with existing guidelines.

Abstract

Background: Most girls with Turner syndrome (TS) require pubertal induction with estrogen, followed by long term replacement. However, no adequately powered prospective studies comparing transdermal with oral 17β-estradiol administration exist. This reflects the difficulty of securing funding to study a rare condition with relatively low morbidity/mortality when competing against conditions such as cancer and vascular disease. Protocol Consensus: The TS Working Group of the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) has agreed to both a 3-year oral and a 3-year transdermal regimen for pubertal induction. Prerequisites include suitable 17β-estradiol tablets and matrix patches to allow the delivery of incremental doses based on body weight. Study Proposal: An international prospective cohort study with single centre analysis is proposed in which clinicians and families are invited to choose either of the agreed regimens, usually starting at 11 years. We hypothesise that pubertal induction with transdermal estradiol will result in better outcomes for some key parameters. The primary outcome measure chosen is height gain during the induction period. Analysis: Assessment of the demographics and drop-out rates of patients choosing either oral or transdermal preparations; and appropriate analysis of outcomes including pubertal height gain, final height, liver enzyme and lipid profile, adherence/acceptability, cardiovascular health, including systolic and diastolic blood pressure and aortic root diameter and bone health. Conclusion: The proposed model of prospective data collection according to internationally agreed protocols aims to break the current impasse in obtaining evidence-based management for TS and could be applied to other rare paediatric endocrine conditions.

Abstract

Objective : An international multidisciplinary initiative, jointly supported by the American College of Rheumatology and European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology, is underway to develop new rigorous classification criteria to identify patients with high likelihood of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) for research purposes. The present study was undertaken to apply an evidence- and consensus-based approach to identify candidate criteria and develop a hierarchical organization of criteria within domains. Methods : During phase I, the APS classification criteria steering committee used systematic literature reviews and surveys of international APS physician scientists to generate a comprehensive list of items related to APS. In phase II, we reviewed the literature, administered surveys, formed domain subcommittees, and used Delphi exercises and nominal group technique to reduce potential APS candidate criteria. Candidate criteria were hierarchically organized into clinical and laboratory domains. Results : Phase I generated 152 candidate criteria, expanded to 261 items with the addition of subgroups and candidate criteria with potential negative weights. Using iterative item reduction techniques in phase II, we initially reduced these items to 64 potential candidate criteria organized into 10 clinical and laboratory domains. Subsequent item reduction methods resulted in 27 candidate criteria, hierarchically organized into 6 additive domains (laboratory, macrovascular, microvascular, obstetric, cardiac, and hematologic) for APS classification. Conclusion : Using data- and consensus-driven methodology, we identified 27 APS candidate criteria in 6 clinical or laboratory domains. In the next phase, the proposed candidate criteria will be used for real-world case collection and further refined, organized, and weighted to determine an aggregate score and threshold for APS classification.
