Abstract

Six European corporate entities are providing the backing for the Superconducting High Tc Coils for High Field Technologies (SHIFT) project. The three-year project is aimed at developing the basic technology needed for the production of magnets with high fields that can operate at temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Kelvin. SHIFT's technology will be used for pulsed magnets for power quality Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage and DC magnets.

Abstract

On the basis of a 22MJ/10MVA unit without stray field, we determine minimal performances for High [T.sub.c] Superconducting (HTS) wires, in order to obtain HTS Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) competitive compared with Low [T.sub.c] Superconducting (LTS) ones. The cost equation mainly considers the wire volume, the fabrication process and losses. We then recommend HTS critical current densities and operating magnetic fields close to the present state of the art for short samples. A 30% gain for HTS SMES compared with LTS one could be expected.

Abstract

A numerical algorithm for determining the current along the z-axis, induction profiles and hysteretic losses of high-temperature superconducting tapes in transverse magnetic fields has been developed. The procedure is superior to a Bean model because it takes into account the anisotropy and nonlinearity with induction of the critical current density. Moreover, it identifies the tape width and the field component parallel to the tape length as the factors contributing to hysteretic losses.

11. Generation and dissociation of dislocations in YBa2Cu3O7 - δ single crystals and deformed oriented powders

Abstract

Dislocations have been observed and characterized by transmission electron microscopy in YBa2Cu3O7 - δ single crystals and deformed oriented powders. In standard single crystals free from deformation treatment, dislocations are found to be generated from small-angle sub-grain boundaries. The parent boundary and the generated dislocations form 'huge' microstructures that may be very effective for vortex lattice pinning. Dissociation of dislocations and stacking-faults are observed in both types of samples and a mechanism is proposed to interpret them. Dislocation loops with Burgers vector out of the (001) plane are found together with the manifestation of a new super structure, and a model of the enclosed stacking-fault is built.

Abstract

Two cases of "yellow-nail syndrome" are reported: in the first, nail changes began eight months after the diagnosis of a breast cancer; in the second, yellow dystrophic nails were associated with hypertrophic osteoarthropathy due to pleuro-pulmonary metastatic lesions. Clinical features are described: characteristic nail changes, lymphoedema, pleural effusions, and, often bronchopulmonary infections and sinusitis. Various combinations are seen, and the time between the development of the different manifestations may vary from several months to many years. Among associated diseases, immunological changes and malignancy are emphasized. The pathogenesis remains obscure. Accurate part taken by lymphoedema, immunological changes, is unknown, and the relationships between "yellow-nail syndrome" and malignancy are still uncertain.
