AbstractRound goby Neogobius melanostomus – a small, benthic fish native to Eurasia – was first introduced to North America in the 1980s through ballast water of cargo ships. In 1990, the Round goby was first discovered in the Laurentian Great Lakes Basin and rapidly spread through all Great Lakes from 1993 to 1998. The Round goby is an aggressive, prolific, and efficient egg predator that subsequently displaced native fishes from their preferred habitats and resources in the Great Lakes, where they are well established and abundant. From Lake Michigan, Round goby moved south into the Chicago Area Waterway System in 1993 and slowly progressed down the Illinois Waterway to the Mississippi River from 2004 to 2019, where less is known about their abundance, establishment, and impact. The goal of this study was to gain a comprehensive understanding of the first large river invasion by Round goby in the Mississippi River Basin by leveraging Round goby capture data from 2019 to 2022 on all pools of the Illinois Waterway. We describe their current distribution, relative abundance (i.e., catch-per-unit-effort), frequency of occurrence, and establishment (i.e., presence of young-of-year and adults) status throughout the Illinois Waterway. Results show that catch-per-unit-effort, frequency of occurrence, and the proportion of sites where multiple life stages are present are considerably higher in the upstream pools relative to more downstream pools of the Illinois Waterway. Our data support that the Round goby has established self-sustaining populations in the Chicago Area Waterway System, the upper Illinois River (i.e. Dresden Island Pool downstream through Starved Rock Pool), and a portion of the lower Illinois River (i.e. Peoria Pool downstream through Alton Pool) of the Illinois Waterway. In the lower Illinois River, Round gobies appear to only be established in Peoria Pool, with captures occurring infrequently in La Grange Pool, and no Round gobies being captured in Alton Pool.

Abstract Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) are a nonnative, planktivorous, and highly invasive species of cyprinid located throughout the Mississippi River Basin. Although they co-occur with largemouth bass (Micropterus nigricans), an abundant native predatory fish, their predator–prey relationship is poorly understood. This potential relationship warrants investigation as largemouth bass are large-gaped predators capable of exhibiting top-down control on planktivorous fishes. The objectives of this study were to determine if largemouth bass consume juvenile silver carp, and if there was a relationship between length of largemouth bass and length of silver carp consumed. Largemouth bass were collected from the La Grange Pool of the Illinois River using 60 Hz-pulsed DC electrofishing and their diets were analyzed (n = 389, total length = 70–578 mm). Evidence of silver carp was present in 18% of diets of largemouth bass that consumed fish. Lengths of consumed silver carp were estimated from the dimensions of their recovered chewing pads or pharyngeal teeth in the stomachs of largemouth bass. BackgroundAssessment of functional impairment following ischaemic stroke is essential to determine outcome and efficacy of intervention in both clinical patients and pre-clinical models. Although paradigms are well described for rodents, comparable methods for large animals, such as sheep, remain limited. This study aimed to develop methods to assess function in an ovine model of ischaemic stroke using composite neurological scoring and gait kinematics from motion capture.MethodsMerino sheep (n = 26) were anaesthetised and subjected to 2 hours middle cerebral artery occlusion. Animals underwent functional assessment at baseline (8-, 5-, and 1-day pre-stroke), and 3 days post-stroke. Neurological scoring was carried out to determine changes in neurological status. Ten infrared cameras measured the trajectories of 42 retro-reflective markers for calculation of gait kinematics. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed at 3 days post-stroke to determine infarct volume. Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC's) were used to assess the repeatability of neurological scoring and gait kinematics across baseline trials. The average of all baselines was used to compare changes in neurological scoring and kinematics at 3 days post-stroke. A principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to determine the relationship between neurological score, gait kinematics, and infarct volume post-stroke.ResultsNeurological scoring was moderately repeatable across baseline trials (ICC > 0.50) and detected marked impairment post-stroke (p < 0.05). Baseline gait measures showed moderate to good repeatability for the majority of assessed variables (ICC > 0.50). Following stroke, kinematic measures indicative of stroke deficit were detected including an increase in stance and stride duration (p < 0.05). MRI demonstrated infarction involving the cortex and/or thalamus (median 2.7 cm3, IQR 1.4 to 11.9). PCA produced two components, although association between variables was inconclusive.ConclusionThis study developed repeatable methods to assess function in sheep using composite scoring and gait kinematics, allowing for the evaluation of deficit 3 days post-stroke. Despite utility of each method independently, there was poor association observed between gait kinematics, composite scoring, and infarct volume on PCA. This suggests that each of these measures has discreet utility for the assessment of stroke deficit, and that multimodal approaches are necessary to comprehensively characterise functional impairment.

This paper presents factorizations of each discrete sine transform (DST) matrix of types I, II, III, and IV into a product of sparse, diagonal, bidiagonal, and scaled orthogonal matrices. Based on the proposed matrix factorization formulas, reduced multiplication complexity, recursive, and radix-2 DST I-IV algorithms are presented. We will present the lowest multiplication complexity DST-IV algorithm in the literature. The paper fills a gap in the self-recursive, exact, and radix-2 DST I-IIII algorithms executed via diagonal, bidiagonal, scaled orthogonal, and simple matrix factors for any input $n=2^{t} \; (t \geq 1)$ . The paper establishes a novel relationship between DST-II and DST-IV matrices using diagonal and bidiagonal matrices. Similarly, a novel relationship between DST-I and DST-III matrices is proposed using sparse and diagonal matrices. These interweaving relationships among DST matrices enable us to bridge the existing factorizations of the DST matrices with the proposed factorization formulas. We present signal flow graphs to provide a layout for realizing the proposed algorithms in DST-based integrated circuit designs. Additionally, we describe an implementation of algorithms based on the proposed DST-II and DST-III factorizations within a double random phase encoding (DRPE) image encryption scheme.

Population demographics are used by biologists and managers to determine the quality of a fishery and set regulations to achieve desired management goals. Regulating a large river system fishery that spans a substantial geographical region is often complicated by spatially variable environmental factors that affect fish population dynamics (e.g. habitat, water quality); these dynamics are rarely examined within an entire system. In this study we compared spatial differences in population age and length at capture, growth, fecundity and body condition of bluegill Lepomis macrochirus among two different river reaches (e.g. basin width, gradient, velocity) of the Illinois River (Illinois, USA) and a disconnected floodplain lake, the Emiquon Preserve. Variations in selected population demographics were evaluated in relation to well-documented habitat characteristics (e.g. water quality, aquatic vegetation, backwater availability). Differences in bluegill demographic traits between the disconnected floodplain lake and river reaches were distinct, and variations between river reaches were sex specific. The floodplain lake generally had older bluegill that expressed a higher maximum length at age and a lower growth rate and fecundity than bluegill in river reaches. River bluegill differed between river reaches in male growth, and fecundity in both sexes. Body condition was not significantly different among bluegill populations. Early research on floodplain lakes indicates that this habitat supports greater fish growth and higher reproductive fitness than mainstem habitat. We conclude that increasing the availability of quality backwater habitat, even within a highly modified large river system like the Illinois River, could substantially increase the quality and stability of bluegill populations.

Background and PurposeCerebral edema and elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) are the leading cause of death in the first week following stroke. Despite this, current treatments are limited and fail to address the underlying mechanisms of swelling, highlighting the need for targeted treatments. When screening promising novel agents, it is essential to use clinically relevant large animal models to increase the likelihood of successful clinical translation. As such, we sought to develop a survival model of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) in the sheep and subsequently characterize the temporal profile of cerebral edema and elevated ICP following stroke in this novel, clinically relevant model.MethodsMerino-sheep (27M;31F) were anesthetized and subject to 2 h tMCAO with reperfusion or sham surgery. Following surgery, animals were allowed to recover and returned to their home pens. At preselected times points ranging from 1 to 7 days post-stroke, animals were re-anesthetized, ICP measured for 4 h, followed by imaging with MRI to determine cerebral edema, midline shift and infarct volume (FLAIR, T2 and DWI). Animals were subsequently euthanized and their brain removed for immunohistochemical analysis. Serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples were also collected and analyzed for substance P (SP) using ELISA.ResultsIntracranial pressure and MRI scans were normal in sham animals. Following stroke, ICP rose gradually over time and by 5 days was significantly (p < 0.0001) elevated above sham levels. Profound cerebral edema was observed as early as 2 days post-stroke and continued to evolve out to 6 days, resulting in significant midline shift which was most prominent at 5 days post-stroke (p < 0.01), in keeping with increasing ICP. Serum SP levels were significantly elevated (p < 0.01) by 7 days post-tMCAO.ConclusionWe have successfully developed a survival model of ovine tMCAO and characterized the temporal profile of ICP. Peak ICP elevation, cerebral edema and midline shift occurred at days 5–6 following stroke, accompanied by an elevation in serum SP. Our findings suggest that novel therapeutic agents screened in this model targeting cerebral edema and elevated ICP would most likely be effective when administered prior to 5 days, or as early as possible following stroke onset.

Due to an increase in the incidence of leishmaniases worldwide, the development of new strategies such as prophylactic vaccines to prevent infection and decrease the disease have become a high priority. Classic vaccines against leishmaniases were based on live or attenuated parasites or their subunits. Nevertheless, the use of whole parasite or their subunits for vaccine production has numerous disadvantages. Therefore, the use of Leishmania peptides to design more specific vaccines against leishmaniases seems promising. Moreover, peptides have several benefits in comparison with other kinds of antigens, for instance, good stability, absence of potentially damaging materials, antigen low complexity, and low-cost to scale up. By contrast, peptides are poor immunogenic alone, and they need to be delivered correctly. In this context, several approaches described in this review are useful to solve these drawbacks. Approaches, such as, peptides in combination with potent adjuvants, cellular vaccinations, adenovirus, polyepitopes, or DNA vaccines have been used to develop peptide-based vaccines. Recent advancements in peptide vaccine design, chimeric, or polypeptide vaccines and nanovaccines based on particles attached or formulated with antigenic components or peptides have been increasingly employed to drive a specific immune response. In this review, we briefly summarize the old, current, and future stands on peptide-based vaccines, describing the disadvantages and benefits associated with them. We also propose possible approaches to overcome the related weaknesses of synthetic vaccines and suggest future guidelines for their development.

In the Mississippi River Basin of North America, invasive bigheaded carp (silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and bighead carp H. nobilis, also referred to as Asian carp) have spread rapidly over the past several decades. In the Illinois River, an important tributary of the Upper Mississippi River, reproduction appears to be sporadic and frequently unsuccessful, yet bigheaded carp densities in this river are among the highest recorded on the continent. Understanding the causative factors behind erratic recruitment in this commercially-harvested invasive species is important for both limiting their spread and managing their harvest. We analyzed weekly catch records from 15 years of a standardized monitoring program to document the emergence of age-0 bigheaded carp in relation to environmental conditions. The appearance of age-0 fish was generally linked to hydrographic attributes, which probably serve as a cue for spawning. However, we found profound differences in the number of age-0 fish among years, which varied by as much as five orders of magnitude in successive years. The strong link between summer flooding and age-0 fish production we observed emphasizes the importance of understanding the hydrologic context in which sustained invasions occur. Despite evidence of sporadic recruitment, bigheaded carp populations in the Illinois River appear to be consistent or increasing because of particularly strong, episodic year classes.

The study used the TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) framework to determine the STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) teachers' experiences and practices. Data were sourced through interviews, classroom observations and document analysis from purposively selected 106 STEM teachers (from randomly identified universities/colleges of the 17 regions of the country). Three frameworks: Policies Standards and Guidelines (PSGs), Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) and TPACK guided the analysis of the qualitative data. Exploratory design developed the visualization for the three education domains (pedagogy, assessment and technology integration) that represent teachers' experiences and practices. Findings revealed that teachers characterized the unique attributes of the domains defining the individual visualizations of these education domains. Re-thematization provided an image for the Philippine Higher Education Responsive Model (PHERM) which showed that STEM teachers develop one knowledge construct of TPACK at a time, the last being integrating technology. The developed model of STEM teachers' experiences and practices is envisioned to track and enhance the competencies of teachers to deliver 21st century-skilled STEM workforce for the Philippines. The study described a mentoring program of a state-funded research and its effects on research and reflective practices to graduate students. Participatory Action Research (PAR), designed as a methodical and program framework, engaged nine mentors (researchers of a state-funded research) and 29 graduate students (purposively invited) to training-based mentoring (workshops and field work), small group mentoring (within research cells), and peer mentoring (field work and software-aided coding analysis). Observations, mentors' narrations, and reflection journals extracted the experiences of the participants on the mentoring program. These reflections revealed that mentors and mentees learned many skills in the mentoring program. They had transformed challenges and difficulties (time management, field work) into learning episodes leading to reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action. They realized the importance of the theory-practice-reflection paradigm in all research endeavors. Hence, PAR-influenced mentoring helped develop their research skills. However, low engagement of the others may be due to time aspect, which may be looked into in a replicated study.

The study explored practices of the sampled higher education Philippine STEAM educators in assessing learners. Data sourced from the database of a state-funded research on Philippine STEAM education using a Classroom Observation Protocol, included 106 STEAM teachers from purposely selected institutions drawn from 14 regions. Systematic data analysis (through data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions) revealed that STEAM teachers used both appropriate traditional and authentic assessment tools and strategies with inclusive integration of technology. Furthermore, results showed that STEAM teachers' best assessment practices may be categorised as: 1) assessment for career or industry readiness, 2) mounting assessment system to support instruction, and 3) collective and reflective assessment process. COVID-19 pandemic implications and policy recommendations are also offered, which may enhance assessment practices and suggest a perspective in crafting and recommending national and international standards and guidelines on assessment literacy among higher STEAM educators.

North American bat populations have experienced precipitous declines since the introduction of white-nose syndrome (WNS). Evidence that bats have responded to WNS by altering their winter habitat selection has been used to manipulate underground environments and improve winter survival. However, such management practices must be based on local data, which do not exist for all regions. Our goal was to identify determinants of winter habitat use for 3 bat species with varying susceptibility to WNS. To do so, we conducted 188 surveys of 129 potential hibernacula over 3 winters. We found that the range of winter temperatures and presence of water were important for the Little Brown Myotis (Myotis lucifugus) and Tricolored Bat (Perimyotis subflavus), species that are highly susceptible to WNS. Counts of both species were greater in sites with a narrow (<5 °C) temperature range and where streams or water bodies >25 m2 were present. In addition, we found larger groups of Little Brown Myotis in abandoned railroad tunnels than in caves. Winter counts of these species increased over time at 3 railroad tunnels that were surveyed for 3 consecutive winters, whereas populations were extirpated from historically important caves and mines. Counts of Big Brown Bats (Eptesicus fuscus), which are less susceptible to WNS, were also greater in hibernacula with water bodies. However, average winter temperature also helped predict counts of Big Brown Bats. This species had a curvilinear response to temperature, with most bats found at hibernacula with average winter temperatures of 4 to 6 °C, and fewer bats observed at warmer and colder conditions. These data show that focusing solely on historically important hibernacula may fail to achieve conservation goals for the Little Brown Myotis and Tricolored Bat in our region, and suggest that anthropogenic structures can provide habitat for remnant populations of imperiled bat species. Following ischemic stroke, substance P (SP)-mediated neurogenic inflammation is associated with profound blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction, cerebral edema, and elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). SP elicits its effects by binding the neurokinin 1 tachykinin receptor (NK1-R), with administration of an NK1-R antagonist shown to ameliorate BBB dysfunction and cerebral edema in rodent and permanent ovine stroke models. Given the importance of reperfusion in clinical stroke, this study examined the efficacy of NK1-R antagonist treatment in reducing cerebral edema and ICP in an ovine model of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAo). Anesthetized sheep (n = 24) were subject to 2-hours tMCAo and randomized (n = 6/group) to receive early NK1-R treatment (days 1–3 post-stroke), delayed NK1-R treatment (day 5 post-stroke), or saline vehicle. At 6-days post-stroke animals were re-anaesthetized and ICP measured, followed by MRI to evaluate infarction, edema and BBB dysfunction. Following both early and delayed NK1-R antagonist administration, ICP was significantly reduced on day 6 compared to vehicle animals (p < 0.05), accompanied by a reduction in cerebral edema, midline shift and BBB dysfunction (p < 0.05). This study demonstrates that NK1-R antagonist treatment is an effective novel therapy for cerebral edema and elevated ICP following stroke in an ovine model, warranting future clinical evaluation. Water management structures (WMS) are used to regulate water levels between large floodplain river backwaters and their adjacent river systems offering a balance between maintaining quality backwater habitat and providing benefits to the river systems. The design and operation of these WMS is dependent on unique management goals, and their impacts on the surrounding ecosystem are understudied. From 2016-2018 we quantified the response of the surrounding fish assemblages (i.e., backwater and river abundance and composition) to the WMS operation at the Emiquon Preserve, a 2723 ha restored floodplain lake located adjacent to the main channel of the Illinois River, U.S.A. Environmental conditions were recorded, and fish were collected using boat electrofishing on both sides of the WMS under three operational levels: closed and no flow, gravity flowing water, and mechanically pumping water to the river. Multivariate analyses determined that there was no difference in fish community composition within the Emiquon Preserve among operation levels. Within the river there were differences in community composition when the WMS was closed and mechanically pumping water. Environmental parameters varied seasonally and WMS operation level varied but indicated an increase in chlorophyll-a in the river when the WMS was mechanically pumping water, although the chlorophyll-a decreased within 200 m downstream of the WMS in the Illinois River. New geophysical profiles across the central Dead Sea Transform (DST) near the Sea of Galilee, Israel, and surrounding highlands, augmented by static stress modeling, allow us to study continental transform plate deformation. The DST separates a ∼10 km thick sedimentary column above a thinned (16–23 km) crust to the west from a ∼7 km column above a ∼30‐km thick crust to the east. Crustal thinning starts under the DST, as observed also farther south, indicating that the DST is indeed located along the boundary between the Arabian plate and its continental margin. Moho step here is gradual. The DST's eastern shoulder dips westward toward the DST unlike the upward flexed shoulder observed farther south, perhaps delineating the northern limit of a thinner and hotter lithosphere. The shape of the Sea of Galilee is modeled as an asymmetric pull‐apart basin formed by a left‐lateral stepover of 2.6 km between slightly divergent and underlapping strike‐slip fault strands dipping 70° to the west. Reflection data indicate that these strands are not connected. Several fault traces within the Sea of Galilee have previously been suggested to carry part of the relative plate motion. However, given slip along the main DST faults, Coulomb stress will increase only on fault portions in the northern part of the lake, in accord with the geographical distribution of seismicity, suggesting that these faults are likely secondary. Mismatch between the DST strand locations in the geophysical profiles and the subsidence model, may reflect temporal changes in fault geometry. Plain Language Summary: The Dead Sea fault system is a vertical discontinuity in the Earth upper layers, where two tectonic plates move laterally relative to each other. Their relative motion produce earthquakes and control the surface topography and sub‐surface structure. We imaged by geophysical methods the subsurface structure of this fault system and its surrounding region at the northern end of the Sea of Galilee, Israel, and we modeled the shape of the lake and the seismic rupture potential of faults there. The two plates, separated by the Dead Sea fault system, are the interior Arabian plate and its former margin, created during the formation of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. As expected, the geological structure is different on either side of the fault system. The shape of the lake and recent seismicity in the area can be explained by lateral plate motion centered on two major faults with an intervening gap between them along the NE side of the lake. The fault geometry may have changed through geologic time. The geologic layers on the eastern side of the fault system plunge toward the fault system whereas farther south along the Dead Sea fault system, they curve up, possibly reflecting deep‐seated properties or processes.
