4. Dissolution and Precipitation Reactions between the Madison Limestone and Supercritical CO2: Implications for Carbon Capture and Storage in Southwest Wyoming

Abstract

As part of an ongoing research program to address anthropogenic emissions of CO2, the University of Wyoming has identified the Rock Springs Uplift (RSU) of southwest Wyoming as a suitable CO2 storage reservoir. The focus of this study is to investigate mineral dissolution/precipitation reactions between the Madison Limestone and saline formation water after injection of supercritical CO2. The stratigraphic section of interest is a dolomite packstone composed of fine-grained Mg-dolomite rhombohedrals. Experiments reacted samples of Madison Limestone from a well drilled on the RSU (12,350 foot interval) with formation water (ionic strength = 1.644 M) under reservoir conditions (100 ��C, 345 bars) for 14 days. Analysis of minerals using optical microscopy and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) determined the extent of mineral precipitation and dissolution. XRD results show no distinct change in mineralogy. However, observations through optical microscopy reveal rounded dolomite edges, an observation not seen on the unreacted limestone. Reacted brine samples were withdrawn from the ongoing experiment and are being analyzed for changes in cation and anion concentrations using an ICP-OES and ion chromatograph. The results of the experiment conclude that minor dolomite dissolution does take place in the Madison Limestone storage reservoir with the injection of supercritical CO2.

Abstract

Igneous rocks in the Doña Ana Mountains record a poorly studied portion of mid-Tertiary magmatism affecting southern New Mexico. Here, Sr and Pb isotopes of feldspars are used to evaluate the origins and potential magmatic relationships between compositionally variable igneous rocks. Overall, plagioclase, sanidine and orthoclase crystals from igneous rocks in the Doña Ana Mountains crystallized from magmas with very different Sr and Pb isotope characteristics. Plagioclase crystals from Early Eocene Palm Park Formation andesite and dacite have similar 87Sr/86Sr ratios but vary widely in 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb. These variations are consistent with the presence of variable magmatic sources that were not involved in Late-Eocene/Early Oligocene magmatism in the Doña Ana Mountains. Sanidine crystals from the Doña Ana Rhyolite and nearby Goat Mountain Rhyolite have similar 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb ratios but variable 87Sr/86Sr ratios, which precludes a simple petrogenetic relationship between them and which also confirms the presence of multiple, highly-evolved magma compositions at ~36 Ma. Orthoclase crystals from syenite dikes that crosscut volcanic rocks in the Doña Ana Mountains, which were presumed to have been parental to the rhyolites, have different 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, 208Pb/204Pb and 87Sr/86Sr ratios that undermine any direct magmatic connections between the syenite and rhyolites in the Doña Ana Mountains.
