3. Les caracteristiques des apprenantes et des apprenants ages de 15 a 18 ans dans le systeme d'education en langue francaise en Ontario (The Characteristics of Female and Male Students Aged 15 to 18 Years in the French Language Educational System in Ontario).

Abstract

A study undertaken to create a profile of 15- to 18-year-old students in minority French language schools in Ontario is reported. The first chapter describes the study's methodology, which included review of education ministry documents and other research, and interviews with students and educators. The second chapter summarizes research findings on the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and moral development of adolescents and the formation of individual identity. Chapter 3 summarizes demographic characteristics of this minority francophone population, and chapter 4 analyzes the linguistic characteristics of the population, alone, and in comparison with other French Canadian groups. The subsequent four chapters present results concerning the cultural, academic, employment, social, and physical activities of this adolescent population and their aspirations. Chapter 9 reviews research on the situation of adolescents and minority francophone adolescents in Belgium, Switzerland, and France for comparison. In chapter 10, findings on the Ontario population are examined for generalizations and gender differences. Finally, in chapter 11, data derived from ministry of education documents are summarized. Appended materials include lists of organizations contacted and databases consulted, the questionnaires for students, teachers, and other educators, lists of education ministry documents analyzed, and respondent sampling data. Abstract

The article reports on the result of the study that examines the changes in the quality of the stream water due to logging of the boreal forest in the Montmorency Forest in Québec. The study concludes that logging of moderate intensity and respecting established best management practices can be accounted for the limited changes of water quality parameters and the low exceedances of the criteria for the protection of aquatic life. Moreover, it is observed that proximity of the cutover to the stream network and logging within the riparian zone did not affect water quality.

Abstract

In dogs provided with chronic gastric and pancreatic fistulas (Thomas cannula), an 80-minute intraduodenal CaCl2 (0.6 mM/kg.) infusion against a background of secretin perfusion (GIH, 1.0 CU/kg./hr.) elicits a complex "pancreon" response consisting of both excitatory and inhibitory effects on the protein and alkaline components, respectively, of pancreatic secretion. It is postulated that these pancreatic secretion changes are the result of the interplay of released CCK and calcitonin. The lack of pancreatic secretion modifications when ethanol (0.7 mg./kg.) was added to the intraduodenal CaCl2 infusion suggests that the former counteracts the effects of the latter on the nerves and/or the endocrine cells of the gut. Ca++ concentration and output in pancreatic secretion did not change significantly either with the intraduodenal CaCl2 alone or associated with ethanol. Fasting blood Ca++ levels were not modified either by the secretin perfusion or by the intraduodenal CaCl2 infusion, either given alone or associated with ethanol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

15. Omeprazole (20 mg daily) versus cimetidine (1200 mg daily) in duodenal ulcer healing and pain relief

Abstract

We conducted a double-blind, randomized, parallel group study in 169 patients with acute duodenal ulcers to compare omeprazole, 20 mg daily, with cimetidine, 600 mg twice daily. After 2 wk, 58% of the omeprazole-treated patients and 46% of the cimetidine-treated patients were completely healed (p = 0.056). After 4 and 6 wk 84% and 88% healed with omeprazole, and 80% and 89% healed with cimetidine (p = NS). After 2 wk, pain was completely gone in 62% of the omeprazole-treated patients versus 46% of the cimetidine-treated patients (p = 0.04). Clinical or laboratory adverse events were reported in 6 (7%) of the omeprazole-treated patients and 11 (13%) of the cimetidine-treated patients (p = NS). An adverse event caused withdrawal of 1 patient on omeprazole (anxiety and depression) and 2 patients on cimetidine (diarrhea and fall in hemoglobin). We conclude that omeprazole (20 mg daily) resulted in a trend toward more rapid ulcer healing compared with a relatively high dose of cimetidine (600 mg b.i.d.), and was preferred by patients for relief of ulcer pain.
