We analyze JWST MIRI/MRS observations of the infrared PAH bands in the nuclear and circumnuclear regions of local AGN from the GATOS Survey. In this work, we examine the PAH properties in the circumnuclear regions of AGN and AGN-outflows, and compare them to those in star-forming regions and the innermost regions of AGN. This study employs 4.9-28.1 micron sub-arcsecond angular resolution data to investigate the properties of PAH in three nearby sources (DL~30-40 Mpc). Our findings align with previous JWST studies, showing that the central regions of AGN show a larger fraction of neutral PAH molecules (i.e. elevated 11.3/6.2 and 11.3/7.7 PAH ratios) compared to star-forming galaxies. We find that the AGN might affect not only the PAH population in the innermost region but also in the extended regions up to ~kpc scales. By comparing our observations to PAH diagnostic diagrams, we find that, in general, regions located in the projected direction of the AGN-outflow occupy similar positions on the PAH diagnostic diagrams as those of the innermost regions of AGN. Star-forming regions that are not affected by the AGN in these galaxies share the same part of the diagram as Star-forming galaxies. We examine the potential of the PAH-H2 diagram to disentangle AGN versus star-forming activity. Our results suggest that in Sy-like AGN, illumination and feedback from the AGN might affect the PAH population at nuclear and kpc scales, in particular, the ionization state of the PAH grains. However, PAH sizes are rather similar. The carriers of the ionized PAH bands (6.2 and 7.7 micron) are less resilience than those of neutral PAH bands (11.3 micron), which might be particularly important for strongly AGN-host coupled systems. Therefore, caution must be applied when using PAH bands as star-formation rate indicators in these systems even at kpc scales, with the ionized ones being more affected by the AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 21 pages, 13 Figures

We present observations of the type-2 Seyfert NGC7172 obtained with the medium-resolution spectrometer (MRS) of the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on board of the JWST. This galaxy hosts one of the lowest ionised gas mass outflow rates (Mout~0.005 M/yr) in a sample of six AGN with similar bolometric luminosities (log Lbol~44erg/s) within the Galactic Activity, Torus and Outflow Survey (GATOS). We aim to understand the properties of the ionised gas outflow, mainly using the emission lines from the neon transitions, that cover a broad range of ionisation potentials (IP) from ~20 eV to ~130 eV. We applied parametric and non-parametric methods to characterise the line emission and kinematics. The low excitation lines (IP<25eV, e.g.[NeII]) trace the rotating disc emission. The high excitation lines (IP>90eV, e.g.[NeV]), which are likely photoionised exclusively by the AGN, are expanding in the direction nearly perpendicular to the disc of the galaxy, with maximum projected velocities of ~350-500 km/s. In particular, [NeV] and [NeVI] lines reveal a biconical ionised gas outflow emerging N-S from the nuclear region, extending at least ~2.5"N and 3.8"S (projected distance of ~450 and 680 pc). Most of the emission arising in the northern part of the cone was not previously detected due to obscuration. Given the almost face-on orientation of the outflow and the almost edge-on orientation of the galaxy, NGC7172 may be a case of weak coupling. Nevertheless, we found evidence for positive feedback in two distinct outflowing clumps at projected distances of 3.1" and 4.3" (i.e. ~560 and 780 pc) SW from the AGN. We estimated a star formation rate in these regions using the [NeII] and [NeIII] luminosities of 0.08 M/yr, that is ~10% of that found in the circumnuclear ring. The ionisation cones of NGC5728 have a deficit of molecular gas based on millimetre observations of CO(2-1) emission. Although photoionisation from the active nucleus may lead to suppression of this transition, warm molecular gas can still be present. We report the detection of eight mid-infrared rotational H$_2$ lines throughout the central kiloparsec, including the ionisation cones, using integral field spectroscopic observations with JWST/MIRI MRS. The H$_2$ line ratios, characteristic of a power-law temperature distribution, indicate that the gas is warmest where it enters the ionisation cone through disk rotation, suggestive of shock excitation. In the nucleus, where the data can be combined with an additional seven ro-vibrational H$_2$ transitions, we find that moderate velocity (30 km s$^{-1}$) shocks in dense ($10^5$ cm$^{-3}$) gas, irradiated by an external UV field ($G_0 = 10^3$), do provide a good match to the full set. The warm molecular gas in the ionisation cone that is traced by the H$_2$ rotational lines has been heated to temperatures $>200$ K. Outside of the ionisation cone the molecular gas kinematics are undisturbed. However, within the ionisation cone, the kinematics are substantially perturbed, indicative of a radial flow, but one that is quantitatively different from the ionised lines. We argue that this outflow is in the plane of the disk, implying a short 50 pc acceleration zone up to speeds of about 400 km s$^{-1}$ followed by an extended deceleration over $\sim$700 pc where it terminates. The deceleration is due to both the radially increasing galaxy mass, and mass-loading as ambient gas in the disk is swept up., Comment: A&A accepted; 16 pages

We use a sample of 64 nearby (D=7-45 Mpc) disk galaxies including 45 AGN and 19 non-AGN, that have high spatial resolution multiline CO observations obtained with the ALMA and/or PdBI arrays to study the distribution of cold molecular gas in their circumunuclear disks (CND). We analyze whether the concentration of cold molecular gas changes as a function of the X-ray luminosity in the 2-10 keV range ($L_{\rm X}$). We also study the concentration of the hot molecular gas using NIR data obtained for the H2 1-0S(1) line. We find a turnover in the distribution of the cold molecular gas concentration as a function of $L_{\rm X}$ with a breakpoint which divides the sample into two branches: the AGN build-up branch ($L_{\rm X}\leq10^{41.5\pm0.3}$erg/s) and the AGN feedback branch ($L_{\rm X}\geq10^{41.5\pm0.3}$erg/s) . Lower luminosity AGN and non-AGN of the AGN build-up branch show high cold molecular gas concentrations and centrally peaked radial profiles on nuclear ($r\leq50$~pc) scales. Higher luminosity AGN of the AGN feedback branch, show a sharp decrease in the concentration of molecular gas and flat or inverted radial profiles. The cold molecular gas concentration index ($CCI$), defined as the ratio of surface densities at $r\leq50$~pc and $r\leq200$~pc , namely $CCI \equiv$~log$_{\rm 10}(\Sigma^{\rm gas}_{\rm 50}/\Sigma^{\rm gas}_{\rm 200}$), spans a factor ~4-5 between the galaxies lying at the high end of the AGN build-up branch and the galaxies of the AGN feedback branch. The concentration and radial distributions of the hot molecular gas in our sample follow less extreme trends as a function of the X-ray luminosity. The superb image quality, stability and sensitivity of the JWST permit deconvolution techniques to be pursued with a fidelity unavailable to ground-based observations. We present an assessment of several deconvolution approaches to improve image quality and mitigate effects of the complex JWST point spread function (PSF). The optimal deconvolution method is determined by using WebbPSF to simulate JWST's complex PSF and MIRISim to simulate multi-band JWST/Mid-Infrared Imager Module (MIRIM) observations of a toy model of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Five different deconvolution algorithms are tested: (1) Kraken deconvolution, (2) Richardson-Lucy, (3) Adaptive Imaging Deconvolution Algorithm, (4) Sparse regularization with the Condat-V\~u algorithm, and (5) Iterative Wiener Filtering and Thresholding. We find that Kraken affords the greatest FWHM reduction of the nuclear source of our MIRISim observations for the toy AGN model while retaining good photometric integrity across all simulated wavebands. Applying Kraken to Galactic Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS) multi-band JWST/MIRIM observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5728, we find that the algorithm reduces the FWHM of the nuclear source by a factor of 1.6-2.2 across all five filters. Kraken images facilitate detection of a SE to NW $\thicksim$2".5 ($\thicksim$470 pc, PA $\simeq$115\deg) extended nuclear emission, especially in the longest wavelengths. We use JWST/MIRI MRS spectroscopy of a sample of six local obscured type 1.9/2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) to compare their nuclear mid-IR absorption bands with the level of nuclear obscuration traced by X-rays. This study is the first to use sub-arcsecond angular resolution data of local obscured AGN to investigate the nuclear mid-IR absorption bands with a wide wavelength coverage (4.9-28.1 $\mu$m). All the nuclei show the 9.7 $\mu$m silicate band in absorption. We compare the strength of the 9.7 and 18 $\mu$m silicate features with torus model predictions. The observed silicate features are generally well explained by clumpy and smooth torus models. We report the detection of the 6 $\mu$m dirty water ice band (i.e., a mix of water and other molecules such as CO and CO$_2$) at sub-arcsecond scales ($\sim$0.26 arcsec at 6 $\mu$m; inner $\sim$50 pc) in a sample of local AGN with different levels of nuclear obscuration in the range log N$_{\rm H}^{\rm X-Ray}$(cm$^{-2}$)$\sim22-25$. We find a good correlation between the 6 $\mu$m water ice optical depths and N$_{\rm H}^{\rm X-Ray}$. This result indicates that the water ice absorption might be a reliable tracer of the nuclear intrinsic obscuration in AGN. The weak water ice absorption in less obscured AGN (log N$_H^{X-ray}$ (cm$^{-2}$)$\lesssim$23.0 cm$^{-2}$) might be related to the hotter dust temperature ($>$T$_{sub}^{H_2O}\sim$110 K) expected to be reached in the outer layers of the torus due to their more inhomogeneous medium. Our results suggest it might be necessary to include the molecular content, such as, H$_2$O, aliphatic hydrocarbons (CH-) and more complex PAH molecules in torus models to better constrain key parameters such as the torus covering factor (i.e. nuclear obscuration)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 13 pages, 12 Figures

We present new ALMA observations of the CO(3-2) transition and 854micron continuum at 0.06-0.3" resolution, together with new VLT/SINFONI observations of NGC7172. This is a luminous (bolometric luminosity of ~10^44 erg/s) Seyfert galaxy that belongs to the Galaxy Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS). The CO(3-2) observations reveal the presence of a highly inclined cold molecular gas ring with an approximate radius of 3-4"~540-720 pc, which is likely associated with an inner Lindblad resonance of a putative stellar bar. There are noncircular motions in the VLT/SINFONI [SiVI]1.96micron and H2 at 2.12micron, and ALMA CO(3-2) velocity fields. After subtracting the stellar velocity field, we detected [SiVI] blueshifted velocities of a few hundred km/s to the south of the AGN. They trace outflowing ionized gas outside the plane of the galaxy and out to projected distances of ~200 pc. The CO(3-2) position-velocity diagram along the kinematic minor axis displays noncircular motions with observed velocities of up to ~150 km/s. Assuming that these are taking place in the disk of the galaxy, the observed velocity signs imply that the molecular gas ring is not only rotating but also outflowing. We derived an integrated cold molecular gas mass outflow rate of ~40 Msun/yr for the ring. Using the 854micron map, we resolved a 32 pc radius torus with a gas mass of 8x10^5 Msun. These torus properties are similar to other Seyfert galaxies in the GATOS sample. We measured a decreased cold molecular gas concentration in the nuclear-torus region relative to the circumnuclear region when compared to other less luminous Seyfert galaxies. We conclude that the effects of AGN feedback in NGC7172, which are likely caused by the AGN wind and/or the moderate luminosity radio jet, are seen as a large-scale outflowing molecular gas ring and accompanying redistribution of molecular gas in the nuclear regions., Comment: Accepted for publication to A&A

We present a spatially-resolved study of the ionised gas in the central 2 kpc of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2110 and investigate the role of its moderate luminosity radio jet (kinetic radio power of $P_\mathrm{jet} = 2.3 \times 10^{43}\mathrm{erg\ s^{-1}}$). We use new optical integral-field observations taken with the MEGARA spectrograph at GTC. We fit the emission lines with a maximum of two Gaussian components, except at the AGN position where we used three. Aided by existing stellar kinematics, we use the observed velocity and velocity dispersion of the emission lines to classify the different kinematic components. The disc component is characterised by lines with $\sigma \sim 60-200\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$. The outflow component has typical values of $\sigma \sim 700\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$ and is confined to the central 400 pc, which is coincident with linear part of the radio jet detected in NGC 2110. At the AGN position, the [O III]$\lambda$5007 line shows high velocity components reaching at least $1000\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$. This and the high velocity dispersions indicate the presence of outflowing gas outside the galaxy plane. Spatially-resolved diagnostic diagrams reveal mostly LI(N)ER-like excitation in the outflow and some regions in the disc, which could be due to the presence of shocks. However, there is also Seyfert-like excitation beyond the bending of the radio jet, probably tracing the edge of the ionisation cone that intercepts with the disc of the galaxy. NGC 2110 follows well the observational trends between the outflow properties and the jet radio power found for a few nearby Seyfert galaxies. All these pieces of information suggest that part of observed ionised outflow in NGC 2110 might be driven by the radio jet. However, the radio jet was bent at radial distances of 200 pc (in projection) from the AGN, and beyond there, most of the gas in the galaxy disc is rotating., Comment: 25 pages, 22 figures, 3 tables. Mrk 477 is the closest type-2 quasar (QSO2), at a distance of 163 Mpc. This makes it an ideal laboratory for studying the interplay between nuclear activity and star formation with a great level of detail and signal-to-noise. In this Letter we present new mid-infrared (mid-IR) imaging and spectroscopic data with an angular resolution of 0.4 arcsec (~300 pc) obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) instrument CanariCam. The N-band (8-13 micron) spectrum of the central ~400 pc of the galaxy reveals [S IV]10.51 micron emission, but no 8.6 or 11.3 micron PAH features, which are commonly used as tracers of recent star formation. This is in stark contrast with the presence of a nuclear starburst of ~300 pc in size, an age of 6 Myr, and a mass of 1.1x10^8 Msun, as constrained from ultraviolet Hubble Space Telescope observations. Considering this, we argue that even the more resilient, neutral molecules that mainly produce the 11.3 micron PAH band are most likely being destroyed in the vicinity of the active nucleus despite the relatively large X-ray column density, of log N_H=23.5 cm^-2, and modest X-ray luminosity, of 1.5x10^43 erg/s. This highlights the importance of being cautious when using PAH features as star formation tracers in the central region of galaxies to evaluate the impact of feedback from active galactic nuclei., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Recent infrared interferometric observations revealed sub-parsec scale dust distributions around active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Using images of CLUMPY torus models and NGC 1068 as an example, we demonstrate that the near- and mid-infrared nuclear emission of some nearby AGNs will be resolvable in direct imaging with the next generation of 30~m telescopes, potentially breaking degeneracies from previous studies that used integrated spectral energy distributions of unresolved AGN tori. To that effect we model wavelength-dependent point spread functions from the pupil images of various telescopes: James Webb Space Telescope, Keck, Giant Magellan Telescope, Thirty Meter Telescope, and Extremely Large Telescope. We take into account detector pixel scales and noise, and apply deconvolution techniques for image recovery. We also model 2D maps of the 10-micron silicate feature strength, $S_{10}$, of NGC 1068 and compare with observations. When the torus is resolved, we find $S_{10}$ variations across the image. However, to reproduce the $S_{10}$ measurements of an unresolved torus a dusty screen of $A_V > 9$ mag is required. We also fit the first resolved image of the K-band emission in NGC 1068 recently published by the GRAVITY collaboration, deriving likely model parameters of the underlying dust distribution. We find that both 1) an elongated structure suggestive of a highly inclined emission ring, and 2) a geometrically thin but optically thick flared disk where the emission arises from a narrow strip of hot cloud surface layers on the far inner side of the torus funnel, can explain the observations., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Near- and mid-infrared interferometers have resolved the dusty parsec-scale obscurer (torus) around nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs). With the arrival of extremely large single-aperture telescopes, the emission morphology will soon be resolvable unambiguously, without modeling directly the underlying brightness distribution probed by interferometers today. Simulations must instead deliver the projected 2D brightness distribution as a result of radiative transfer through a 3D distribution of dusty matter around the AGN. We employ such physically motivated 3D dust distributions in tori around AGNs to compute 2D images of the emergent thermal emission using CLUMPY, a dust radiative transfer code for clumpy media. We demonstrate that CLUMPY models can exhibit morphologies with significant polar elongation in the mid-infrared (i.e. the emission extends perpendicular to the dust distribution) on scales of several parsecs, in line with observations in several nearby AGNs. We characterize the emission and cloud distribution morphologies. The observed emission from near- to mid-infrared wavelengths generally does not trace the bulk of the cloud distribution. The elongation of the emission is sensitive to the torus opening angle or scale height. For cloud distributions with a flat radial profile, polar extended emission is realized only at wavelengths shorter than ~18 micron, and shorter than ~5 micron for steep profiles. We make the full results available through HYPERCAT, a large hypercube of resolved AGN torus brightness maps computed with CLUMPY. We compare mid-IR and ALMA far-IR images of 12 nearby Seyferts selected from GATOS. The mid-IR unresolved emission contributes more than 60% of the nuclear emission in most galaxies. By contrast, the ALMA 870micron continuum emission is mostly resolved and typically along the torus equatorial direction (Paper I, Garcia-Burillo et al. 2021). The Eddington ratios and nuclear hydrogen column densities NH of half the sample are favorable to launching polar and/or equatorial dusty winds, according to simulations. Six show mid-IR extended emission in the polar direction as traced by the NLR and perpendicular to the ALMA emission. In a few, the nuclear NH might be too high to uplift large quantities of dusty material along the polar direction. Five galaxies have low NH and/or Eddington ratios and thus polar dusty winds are not likely. We generate new CAT3D-WIND disk-wind model images. At low wind-to-disk cloud ratios the far-IR model images have disk- and ring-like morphologies. The X-shape associated with dusty winds is seen better in the far-IR at intermediate-high inclinations for the extended-wind configurations. In most models, the mid-IR emission comes from the inner part of the disk/cone. Extended bi-conical and one-sided polar mid-IR emission is seen in extended-wind configurations and high wind-to-disk cloud ratios. When convolved to our resolution, the model images reproduce qualitative aspects of the observed morphologies. Low-intermediate wind-to-disk ratios are required to account for the large fractions of unresolved mid-IR emission. This work and Paper I provide observational support for the torus+wind scenario. The wind component is more relevant at high Eddington ratios and/or AGN luminosities, and polar dust emission is predicted at NH of up to $10^{24}$cm$^{-2}$. We present the first results of the Galaxy Activity, Torus and Outflow Survey (GATOS), a project aimed at understanding the properties of the dusty molecular tori and their connection to the host galaxy in nearby Seyfert galaxies. Our project expands the range of AGN luminosities and Eddington ratios covered by previous surveys of Seyferts conducted by ALMA and allows us to study the gas feeding and feedback cycle in a combined sample of 19 Seyferts. We used ALMA to obtain new images of the emission of molecular gas and dust using the CO(3-2) and HCO+(4-3) lines as well as their underlying continuum emission at 870 microns with high spatial resolutions (0.1'' ~ 7 - 13 pc) in the CND of 10 nearby (D < 28 Mpc) Seyfert galaxies. Our new ALMA observations detect 870 micron continuum and CO line emission from spatially resolved disks located around the AGN in all the sources. The bulk of the continuum flux can be accounted for by thermal emission from dust in the majority of the targets. For most of the sources the disks show a preponderant orientation perpendicular to the AGN wind axes, as expected for dusty molecular tori. The median diameters and molecular gas masses of the tori are ~ 42 pc, and ~ 6 x 10**5 Msun, respectively. We find a positive correlation between the line-of-sight gas column densities responsible for the absorption of X-rays and the molecular gas column densities derived from CO towards the AGN in our sources. The radial distributions of molecular gas in the CND of our combined sample show signs of nuclear-scale molecular gas deficits. We also detect molecular outflows in the sources that show the most extreme nuclear-scale gas deficits in our sample. We investigate the relation between the detection of the $11.3\,\mu$m PAH feature in the nuclear ($\sim 24-230\,$pc) regions of 22 nearby Seyfert galaxies and the properties of the cold molecular gas. For the former we use ground-based (0.3-0.6" resolution) mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy. The cold molecular gas is traced by ALMA and NOEMA high (0.2-1.1") angular resolution observations of the CO(2-1) transition. Galaxies with a nuclear detection of the $11.3\,\mu$m PAH feature contain more cold molecular gas (median $1.6\times 10^7\,M_\odot$) and have higher column densities ($N({\rm H}_2) = 2 \times 10^{23}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$) over the regions sampled by the mid-IR slits than those without a detection. This suggests that molecular gas plays a role in shielding the PAH molecules in the harsh environments of Seyfert nuclei. Choosing the PAH molecule naphthalene as an illustration, we compute its half-life in the nuclear regions of our sample when exposed to 2.5keV hard X-ray photons. We estimate shorter half-lives for naphthalene in nuclei without a $11.3\,\mu$m PAH detection than in those with a detection. The Spitzer/IRS PAH ratios on circumnuclear scales ($\sim$ 4" $\sim$ 0.25-1.3kpc) are in between model predictions for neutral and partly ionized PAHs. However, Seyfert galaxies in our sample with the highest nuclear H$_2$ column densities are not generally closer to the neutral PAH tracks. This is because in the majority of our sample galaxies, the CO(2-1) emission in the inner $\sim$ 4" is not centrally peaked and in some galaxies traces circumnuclear sites of strong star formation activity. Spatially resolved observations with the MIRI medium-resolution spectrograph (MRS) on the James Webb Space Telescope will be able to distinguish the effects of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and star formation on the PAH emission in nearby AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

AGN-driven outflows are believed to play an important role in regulating the growth of galaxies mostly via negative feedback. However, their effects on their hosts are far from clear, especially for low and moderate luminosity Seyferts. To investigate this issue, we have obtained cold molecular gas observations, traced by the CO(2-1) transition, using the NOEMA interferometer of five nearby (distances between 19 and 58 Mpc) Seyfert galaxies. The resolution of approx. 0.3-0.8 arcsec (approx. 30-100 pc) and field of view of NOEMA allowed us to study the CO(2-1) morphology and kinematics in the nuclear regions (approx. 100 pc) and up to radial distances of approx. 900 pc. We have detected CO(2-1) emission in all five galaxies with disky or circumnuclear ring like morphologies. We derived cold molecular gas masses on nuclear (approx. 100 pc) and circumnuclear (approx. 650 pc) scales in the range from $10^6$ to $10^7$M$_{\odot}$ and from $10^7$ to $10^8$ $M_{\odot}$, respectively. In all of our galaxies the bulk of this gas is rotating in the plane of the galaxy. However, non-circular motions are also present. In NGC 4253, NGC 4388 and NGC 7465, we can ascribe the streaming motions to the presence of a large-scale bar. In Mrk 1066 and NGC 4388, the non-circular motions in the nuclear regions are explained as outflowing material due to the interaction of the AGN wind with molecular gas in the galaxy disk. We conclude that for an unambiguous and precise interpretation of the kinematics of the cold molecular gas we need a detailed knowledge of the host galaxy (i.e., presence of bars, interactions, etc) as well as of the ionized gas kinematics and the ionization cone geometry., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 23 pages, 17 figures

We present the analysis of Chandra and NuSTAR spectra of NGC 4968, a local (D$\sim$44 Mpc) 12$\mu$m-selected Seyfert 2 galaxy, enshrouded within Compton-thick layers of obscuring gas. We find no evidence of variability between the Chandra and NuSTAR observations (separated by 2 years), and between the two NuSTAR observations (separated by 10 months). Using self-consistent X-ray models, we rule out the scenario where the obscuring medium is nearly spherical and uniform, contradicting the results implied by the $<$10 keV Chandra spectrum. The line-of-sight column density, from intervening matter between the source and observer that intercepts the intrinsic AGN X-ray emission, is well within the Compton-thick regime, with a minimum column density of $2\times10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$. The average global column density is high ($> 3\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$), with both Compton-thick and Compton-thin solutions permitted depending on the X-ray spectral model. The spectral models provide a range of intrinsic AGN continuum parameters and implied 2-10 keV luminosities ($L_{\rm 2-10keV,intrinsic}$), where the higher end of $L_{\rm 2-10keV,intrinsic}$ is consistent with expectations from the 12$\mu$m luminosity ($L_{\rm 2-10keV,intrinisc} \sim 7\times10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$). Compared with Compton-thick AGN previously observed by {\it NuSTAR}, NGC 4968 is among the most intrinsically X-ray luminous. However, despite its close proximity and relatively high intrinsic X-ray luminosity, it is undetected by the 105 month Swift-BAT survey, underscoring the importance of multi-wavelength selection for obtaining the most complete census of the most hidden black holes., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ; 20 pages, 8 figures

We present ALMA observations of the CO(2-1) and CO(3-2) molecular gas transitions and associated (sub)-mm continua of the nearby Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC3227 with angular resolutions 0.085-0.21" (7-15pc). On large scales the cold molecular gas shows circular motions as well as streaming motions on scales of a few hundred parsecs associated with a large scale bar. We fitted the nuclear ALMA 1.3mm emission with an unresolved component and an extended component. The 850$\mu$m emission shows at least two extended components, one along the major axis of the nuclear disk and the other along the axis of the ionization cone. The molecular gas in the central region (1" ~73pc) shows several CO clumps with complex kinematics which appears to be dominated by non-circular motions. While we cannot demonstrate conclusively the presence of a warped nuclear disk, we also detected non-circular motions along the kinematic minor axis. They reach line-of-sight velocities of v-vsys =150-200km/s. Assuming that the radial motions are in the plane of the galaxy, then we interpret them as a nuclear molecular outflow due to molecular gas in the host galaxy being entrained by the AGN wind. We derive molecular outflow rates of $5\,M_\odot\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$ and $0.6\,M_\odot\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$ at projected distances of up to 30pc to the northeast and southwest of the AGN, respectively. At the AGN location we estimate a mass in molecular gas of $5\times 10^{5}\,M_\odot$ and an average column density $N({\rm H}_2) = 2-3\times 10^{23}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$ in the inner 15pc. The nuclear molecular gas and sub-mm continuum emission of NGC3227 do not resemble the classical compact torus. Rather, these emissions extend for several tens of parsecs and appear connected with the circumnuclear ring in the host galaxy disk, as found in other local AGN. We characterize for the first time the torus properties of an ultra-hard X-ray (14-195 keV) volume-limited (DL<40 Mpc) sample of 24 Seyfert (Sy) galaxies (BCS40 sample). The sample was selected from the Swift/BAT nine month catalog. We use high angular resolution nuclear infrared (IR) photometry and N-band spectroscopy, the CLUMPY torus models and a Bayesian tool to characterize the properties of the nuclear dust. In the case of the Sy1s we estimate the accretion disk contribution to the subarcsecond resolution nuclear IR SEDs (~0.4'') which is, on average, 46+-28, 23+-13 and 11+-5% in the J-, H- and K-bands, respectively. This indicates that the accretion disk templates that assume a steep fall for longer wavelengths than 1 micron might underestimate its contribution to the near-IR emission. Using both optical (broad vs narrow lines) and X-ray (unabsorbed vs absorbed) classifications, we compare the global posterior distribution of the torus model parameters. We confirm that Sy2s have larger values of the torus covering factor (CT~0.95) than Sy1s (CT~0.65) in our volume-limited Seyfert sample. These findings are independent of whether we use an optical or X-ray classification. We find that the torus covering factor remains essentially constant within the errors in our luminosity range and there is no clear dependence with the Eddington ratio. Finally, we find tentative evidence that even an ultra hard X-ray selection is missing a significant fraction of highly absorbed type 2 sources with very high covering factor tori., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures and 14 tables. We examine star formation activity in a distance- (z<0.1) and flux-limited sample of quasars (QSOs). Mid-infrared (MIR) spectral diagnostics at high spatial resolution (~0.4 arcsec) yield star formation rates (SFRs) in the inner regions (~300 pc to 1 kpc) for 13 of 20 of the sample members. We group these objects according to the size probed by the high angular resolution spectroscopy, with characteristic scales of <0.7 and ~0.7-1 kpc. Using the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) feature at 11.3 um, we measure SFRs around 0.2 and 1.6 M_{\odot}yr^{-1}. We also measure the larger aperture PAH-derived SFRs in the individual IRS/Spitzer spectra of the sample and obtain a clear detection in ~58 percent of them. We compare smaller and larger aperture measurements and find that they are similar, suggesting that star formation activity in these QSOs is more centrally concentrated, with the inner region (>~1 kpc) accounting for the majority of star formation measured on these scales, and that PAH molecules can be present in most local MIR-bright QSOs within a few hundred pc from the central engine. By comparison with merger simulations, we find that our estimation of the SFR and black hole (BH) accretion rates are consistent with a scenario in which the star formation activity is centrally peaked as predicted by simulations., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present arcsecond-scale observations of the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) of seven nearby Seyfert galaxies observed from the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) using the 31.5 and 37.1 um filters of the Faint Object infraRed CAmera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST). We isolate unresolved emission from the torus and find extended diffuse emission in six 37.1 um residual images in our sample. Using Spitzer/IRS spectra, we determine the dominant mid-infrared (MIR) extended emission source and attribute it to dust in the narrow line region (NLR) or star formation. We compare the optical NLR and radio jet axes to the extended 37.1 um emission and find coincident axes for three sources. For those AGNs with extended emission coincident with the optical axis, we find that spatial scales of the residual images are consistent with 0.1 - 1 kpc scale distances to which dust can be heated by the AGN. Using previously published subarcsecond 1 - 20 um imaging and spectroscopic data along with our new observations, we construct broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the AGNs at wavelengths 1 - 40 um. We find that three AGNs in our sample tentatively show a turnover in the SED between 30 - 40 um. Using results from Clumpy torus models and the Bayesian inference tool BayesClumpy, we find that the posterior outputs for AGNs with MIR turnover revealed by SOFIA/FORCAST have smaller uncertainties than AGNs that do not show a turnover., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

We combine new (NGC 1275, NGC 4151, and NGC 5506) and previously published (Cygnus A, Mrk 231, and NGC 1068) sub-arcsecond resolution mid-infrared (MIR; 8-13 $\mu$m) imaging- and spectro-polarimetric observations of six Seyfert galaxies using CanariCam on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. These observations reveal a diverse set of physical processes responsible for the nuclear polarization, and permit characterization of the origin of the MIR nuclear polarimetric signature of active galactic nuclei (AGN). For all radio quiet objects, we found that the nuclear polarization is low (<1 per cent), and the degree of polarization is often a few per cent over extended regions of the host galaxy where we have sensitivity to detect such extended emission (i.e., NGC 1068 and NGC 4151). We suggest that the higher degree of polarization previously found in lower resolution data arises only on the larger-than-nuclear scales. Only the radio-loud Cygnus A exhibits significant nuclear polarization ($\sim$11 per cent), attributable to synchrotron emission from the pc-scale jet close to the core. We present polarization models that suggest that the MIR nuclear polarization for highly obscured objects arises from a self-absorbed MIR polarized clumpy torus and/or dichroism from the host galaxy, while for unabsorbed cores, MIR polarization arises from dust scattering in the torus and/or surrounding nuclear dust., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. We present ALMA Band 6 $^{12}$CO(2--1) line and rest-frame 232GHz continuum observations of the nearby Compton-thick Seyfert galaxy NGC5643 with angular resolutions 0.11-0.26arcsec (9-21pc). The CO(2--1) integrated line map reveals emission from the nuclear and circumnuclear region with a two-arm nuclear spiral extending 10arcsec on each side. The circumnuclear CO(2--1) kinematics can be fitted with a rotating disk, although there are regions with large residual velocities and/or velocity dispersions. The CO(2--1) line profiles of these regions show two different velocity components. One is ascribed to the circular component and the other to the interaction of the AGN outflow, as traced by the [O III]5007AA emission, with molecular gas in the disk a few hundred parsecs from the AGN. On nuclear scales, we detected an inclined CO(2--1) disk (diameter 26 pc, FWHM) oriented almost in a north-south direction. The CO(2--1) nuclear kinematics can be fitted with a rotating disk which appears to be tilted with respect to the large scale disk. There are strong non-circular motions in the central 0.2-0.3 arcsec with velocities of up to 110km/s. In the absence of a nuclear bar, these motions could be explained as radial outflows in the nuclear disk. We estimate a total molecular gas mass for the nuclear disk of $M({\rm H}_2)=1.1\times 10^7\,M_\odot$ and an H$_2$ column density toward the location of the AGN of $N({\rm H}_2)\sim 5 \times 10^{23}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$, for a standard CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor. We interpret this nuclear molecular gas disk as the obscuring torus of NGC5643 as well as the collimating structure of the ionization cone., Comment: 16 papes, 9 figures. Accepted to ApJ. We present new calculations of the CAT3D clumpy torus models, which now include a more physical dust sublimation model as well as AGN anisotropic emission. These new models allow graphite grains to persist at temperatures higher than the silicate dust sublimation temperature. This produces stronger near-infrared emission and bluer mid-infrared (MIR) spectral slopes. We make a statistical comparison of the CAT3D model MIR predictions with a compilation of sub-arcsecond resolution ground-based MIR spectroscopy of 52 nearby Seyfert galaxies (median distance of 36 Mpc) and 10 quasars. We focus on the AGN MIR spectral index $\alpha_{MIR}$ and the strength of the 9.7 $\mu$m silicate feature $S_{Sil}$. As with other clumpy torus models, the new CAT3D models do not reproduce the Seyfert galaxies with deep silicate absorption ($S_{Sil}<-1$). Excluding those, we conclude that the new CAT3D models are in better agreement with the observed $\alpha_{MIR}$ and $S_{Sil}$ of Seyfert galaxies and quasars. We find that Seyfert 2 are reproduced with models with low photon escape probabilities, while the quasars and the Seyfert 1-1.5 require generally models with higher photon escape probabilities. Quasars and Seyfert 1-1.5 tend to show steeper radial cloud distributions and fewer clouds along an equatorial line-of-sight than Seyfert 2. Introducing AGN anisotropic emission besides the more physical dust sublimation models alleviates the problem of requiring inverted radial cloud distributions (i.e., more clouds towards the outer parts of the torus) to explain the MIR spectral indices of type 2 Seyferts., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the Chandra imaging and spectral analysis of NGC 4968, a nearby (z = 0.00986) Seyfert 2 galaxy. We discover extended ($\sim$1 kpc) X-ray emission in the soft band (0.5 - 2 keV) that is neither coincident with the narrow line region nor the extended radio emission. Based on spectral modeling, it is linked to on-going star formation ($\sim$2.6-4 M$_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$). The soft emission at circumnuclear scales (inner $\sim$400 pc) originates from hot gas, with kT $\sim$ 0.7 keV, while the most extended thermal emission is cooler (kT $\sim$ 0.3 keV). We refine previous measurements of the extreme Fe K$\alpha$ equivalent width in this source (EW = 2.5$^{+2.6}_{-1.0}$ keV), which suggests the central engine is completely embedded within Compton-thick levels of obscuration. Using physically motivated models fit to the Chandra spectrum, we derive a Compton-thick column density ($N_{\rm H} > 1.25\times10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) and an intrinsic hard (2-10 keV) X-ray luminosity of $\sim$3-8$\times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (depending on the presumed geometry of the obscurer), which is over two orders of magnitude larger than that observed. The large Fe K$\alpha$ EW suggests a spherical covering geometry, which could be confirmed with X-ray measurements above 10 keV. NGC 4968 is similar to other active galaxies that exhibit extreme Fe K$\alpha$ EWs (i.e., $>$2 keV) in that they also contain ongoing star formation. This work supports the idea that gas associated with nuclear star formation may increase the covering factor of the enshrouding gas and play a role in obscuring AGN., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. We present high-angular (0.17$-$0.35 arcsec) resolution imaging polarimetric observations of Mrk 231 in the 3.1 $\mu$m filter using MMT-Pol on the 6.5-m MMT, and in the 8.7 $\mu$m, 10.3 $\mu$m, and 11.6 $\mu$m filters using CanariCam on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. In combination with already published observations, we compile the 1$-$12 $\mu$m total and polarized nuclear spectral energy distribution (SED). The total flux SED in the central 400 pc is explained as the combination of 1) a hot (731 $\pm$ 4 K) dusty structure, directly irradiated by the central engine, which is at 1.6 $\pm$ 0.1 pc away and attributed to be in the pc-scale polar region, 2) an optically-thick, smooth and disk-like dusty structure (`torus') with an inclination of 48 $\pm$ 23$^{\circ}$ surrounding the central engine, and 3) an extinguished (A$_{\mbox{V}} =$ 36 $\pm$ 5 mag) starburst component. The polarized SED decreases from 0.77 $\pm$ 0.14 per cent at 1.2 $\mu$m to 0.31 $\pm$ 0.15 per cent at 11.6 $\mu$m and follows a power-law function, $\lambda^{\sim0.57}$. The polarization angle remains constant ($\sim$108$^{\circ}$) in the 1$-$12 $\mu$m wavelength range. We investigate the evolutionary connection between local IR-bright galaxies ($\log L_{\rm IR}\ge 11.4\,L_\odot$) and quasars. We use high angular resolution ($\sim$ 0.3-0.4 arcsec $\sim$ few hundred parsecs) $8-13\,\mu$m ground-based spectroscopy to disentangle the AGN mid-IR properties from those of star formation. The comparison between the nuclear $11.3\,\mu$m PAH feature emission and that measured with Spitzer/IRS indicates that the star formation is extended over a few kpc in the IR-bright galaxies. The AGN contribution to the total IR luminosity of IR-bright galaxies is lower than in quasars. Although the dust distribution is predicted to change as IR-bright galaxies evolve to IR-bright quasars and then to optical quasars, we show that the AGN mid-IR emission of all the quasars in our sample is not significantly different. In contrast, the nuclear emission of IR-bright galaxies with low AGN contributions appears more heavily embedded in dust although there is no clear trend with the interaction stage or projected nuclear separation. This suggests that the changes in the distribution of the nuclear obscuring material may be taking place rapidly and at different interaction stages washing out the evidence of an evolutionary path. When compared to normal AGN, the nuclear star formation activity of quasars appears to be dimming whereas it is enhanced in some IR-bright nuclei, suggesting that the latter are in an earlier star-formation dominated phase., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present subarcsecond resolution mid-infrared (MIR) images obtained with 8-10 m-class ground-based telescopes of a complete volume-limited (DL<40 Mpc) sample of 24 Seyfert galaxies selected from the Swift/BAT nine month catalog. We use those MIR images to study the nuclear and circumnuclear emission of the galaxies. Using different methods to classify the MIR morphologies on scales of ~400 pc, we find that the majority of the galaxies (75-83%) are extended or possibly extended and 17-25% are point-like. This extended emission is compact and it has low surface brightness compared with the nuclear emission, and it represents, on average, ~30% of the total MIR emission of the galaxies in the sample. We find that the galaxies whose circumnuclear MIR emission is dominated by star formation show more extended emission (650+-700 pc) than AGN-dominated systems (300+-100 pc). In general, the galaxies with point-like MIR morphologies are face-on or moderately inclined (b/a~0.4-1.0), and we do not find significant differences between the morphologies of Sy1 and Sy2. We used the nuclear and circumnuclear fluxes to investigate their correlation with different AGN and SF activity indicators. We find that the nuclear MIR emission (the inner ~70 pc) is strongly correlated with the X-ray emission (the harder the X-rays the better the correlation) and with the [O IV] lambda 25.89 micron emission line, indicating that it is AGN-dominated. We find the same results, although with more scatter, for the circumnuclear emission, which indicates that the AGN dominates the MIR emission in the inner ~400 pc of the galaxies, with some contribution from star formation., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present an atlas of mid-infrared (mid-IR) ~7.5-13micron spectra of 45 local active galactic nuclei (AGN) obtained with CanariCam on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC) as part of an ESO/GTC large program. The sample includes Seyferts and other low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) at a median distance of 35Mpc and luminous AGN, namely PG quasars, (U)LIRGs, and radio galaxies (RG) at a median distance of 254Mpc. To date, this is the largest mid-IR spectroscopic catalog of local AGN at sub-arcsecond resolution (median 0.3arcsec). The goal of this work is to give an overview of the spectroscopic properties of the sample. The nuclear 12micron luminosities of the AGN span more than four orders of magnitude, nu*Lnu(12micron)~ 3e41-1e46erg/s. In a simple mid-IR spectral index vs. strength of the 9.7micron silicate feature diagram most LLAGN, Seyfert nuclei, PG quasars, and RGs lie in the region occupied by clumpy torus model tracks. However, the mid-IR spectra of some might include contributions from other mechanisms. Most (U)LIRG nuclei in our sample have deeper silicate features and flatter spectral indices than predicted by these models suggesting deeply embedded dust heating sources and/or contribution from star formation. The 11.3micron PAH feature is clearly detected in approximately half of the Seyfert nuclei, LLAGN, and (U)LIRGs. While the RG, PG quasars, and (U)LIRGs in our sample have similar nuclear 12micron luminosities, we do not detect nuclear PAH emission in the RGs and PG quasars., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 22 pages, 8 figures

We present new mid-infrared N-band spectroscopy and Q-band photometry of the local luminous infrared galaxy NGC1614, one of the most extreme nearby starbursts. We analyze the mid-IR properties of the nucleus (central 150 pc) and four regions of the bright circumnuclear (diameter~600 pc) star-forming (SF) ring of this object. The nucleus differs from the circumnuclear SF ring by having a strong 8-12 micron continuum (low 11.3 micron PAH equivalent width). These characteristics, together with the nuclear X-ray and sub-mm properties, can be explained by an X-ray weak active galactic nucleus (AGN), or by peculiar SF with a short molecular gas depletion time and producing an enhanced radiation field density. In either case, the nuclear luminosity (L(IR) < 6e43 erg/s) is only <5% of the total bolometric luminosity of NGC1614. So this possible AGN does not dominate the energy output in this object. We also compare three star-formation rate (SFR) tracers (Pa$\alpha$, 11.3 micron PAH, and 24 micron emissions) at 150 pc scales in the circumnuclear ring. In general, we find that the SFR is underestimated (overestimated) by a factor of 2-4 (2-3) using the 11.3 micron PAH (24 micron) emission with respect to the extinction corrected Pa$\alpha$ SFR. The former can be explained because we do not include diffuse PAH emission in our measurements, while the latter might indicate that the dust temperature is particularly warmer in the central regions of NGC1614., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 10 pages, 5 figures

We present an analysis of the nuclear infrared (IR, 1.6 to 18 $\mu$m) emission of the ultraluminous IR galaxy UGC 5101 to derive the properties of its active galactic nucleus (AGN) and its obscuring material. We use new mid-IR high angular resolution ($0.3-0.5$ arcsec) imaging using the Si-2 filter ($\lambda_{C}=8.7\, \mu$m) and $7.5-13$ $\mu$m spectroscopy taken with CanariCam (CC) on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. We also use archival HST/NICMOS and Subaru/COMICS imaging and Spitzer/IRS spectroscopy. We estimate the near- and mid-IR unresolved nuclear emission by modelling the imaging data with GALFIT. We decompose the Spitzer/IRS and CC spectra using a power-law component, which represents the emission due to dust heated by the AGN, and a starburst component, both affected by foreground extinction. We model the resulting unresolved near- and mid-IR, and the starburst subtracted CC spectrum with the CLUMPY torus models of Nenkova et al. The derived geometrical properties of the torus, including the large covering factor and the high foreground extinction needed to reproduce the deep $9.7\, \mu$m silicate feature, are consistent with the lack of strong AGN signatures in the optical. We derive an AGN bolometric luminosity $L_{bol}\sim1.9\times10^{45}\,$erg s$^{-1}$ that is in good agreement with other estimates in the literature., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present J' and K' imaging linear polarimetric adaptive optics observations of NGC 1068 using MMT-Pol on the 6.5-m MMT. These observations allow us to study the torus from a magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) framework. In a 0.5" (30 pc) aperture at K', we find that polarisation arising from the passage of radiation from the inner edge of the torus through magnetically aligned dust grains in the clumps is the dominant polarisation mechanism, with an intrinsic polarisation of 7.0%$\pm$2.2%. This result yields a torus magnetic field strength in the range of 4$-$82 mG through paramagnetic alignment, and 139$^{+11}_{-20}$ mG through the Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. The measured position angle (P.A.) of polarisation at K$'$ is found to be similar to the P.A. of the obscuring dusty component at few parsec scales using infrared interferometric techniques. We show that the constant component of the magnetic field is responsible for the alignment of the dust grains, and aligned with the torus axis onto the plane of the sky. Adopting this magnetic field configuration and the physical conditions of the clumps in the MHD outflow wind model, we estimate a mass outflow rate $\le$0.17 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ at 0.4 pc from the central engine for those clumps showing near-infrared dichroism. The models used were able to create the torus in a timescale of $\geq$10$^{5}$ yr with a rotational velocity of $\leq$1228 km s$^{-1}$ at 0.4 pc. We present subarcsecond resolution infrared (IR) imaging and mid-IR spectroscopic observations of the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy NGC 2992, obtained with the Gemini North Telescope and the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC). The N-band image reveals faint extended emission out to ~3 kpc, and the PAH features detected in the GTC/CanariCam 7.5-13 micron spectrum indicate that the bulk of this extended emission is dust heated by star formation. We also report arcsecond resolution MIR and far-IR imaging of the interacting system Arp 245, taken with the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Herschel Space Observatory. Using these data, we obtain nuclear fluxes using different methods and find that we can only recover the nuclear fluxes obtained from the subarcsecond data at 20-25 micron, where the AGN emission dominates. We fitted the nuclear IR spectral energy distribution of NGC 2992, including the GTC/CanariCam nuclear spectrum (~50 pc), with clumpy torus models. We then used the best-fitting torus model to decompose the Spitzer/IRS 5-30 spectrum (~630 pc) in AGN and starburst components, using different starburst templates. We find that, whereas at shorter mid-IR wavelengths the starburst component dominates (64% at 6 micron), the AGN component reaches 90% at 20 micron. We finally obtained dust masses, temperatures and star formation rates for the different components of the Arp 245 system and find similar values for NGC 2992 and NGC 2993. We present a time series of 8 - 13 $\mu$m spectra and photometry for SN 2014J obtained 57, 81, 108, and 137 d after the explosion using CanariCam on the Gran Telescopio Canarias. This is the first mid-IR time series ever obtained for a Type Ia supernova. These observations can be understood within the framework of the delayed detonation model and the production of $\sim$0.6 $\rm M_\odot$ of $^{56}$Ni, consistent with the observed brightness, the brightness decline relation, and the $\gamma$-ray fluxes. The [Co III] line at 11.888 $\mu$m is particularly useful for evaluating the time evolution of the photosphere and measuring the amount of $^{56}$Ni and thus the mass of the ejecta. Late-time line profiles of SN 2014J are rather symmetric and not shifted in the rest frame. We see Argon emission, which provides a unique probe of mixing in the transition layer between incomplete burning and nuclear statistical equilibrium. We may see [Fe III] and [Ni IV] emission, both of which are observed to be substantially stronger than indicated by our models. If the latter identification is correct, then we are likely observing stable Ni, which might imply central mixing. In addition, electron capture, also required for stable Ni, requires densities larger than $\sim$$1 \times 10^9$ g cm$^{-3}$, which are expected to be present only in white dwarfs close to the Chandrasekhar limit. This study demonstrates that mid-IR studies of Type Ia supernovae are feasible from the ground and provide unique information, but it also indicates the need for better atomic data., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present mid-infrared (MIR) imaging and spectroscopic data of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 1066 obtained with CanariCam (CC) on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC). The galaxy was observed in imaging mode with an angular resolution of 0.24 arcsec (54 pc) in the Si-2 filter (8.7 micron). The image reveals a series of star-forming knots within the central ~400 pc, after subtracting the dominant active galactic nucleus (AGN) component. We also subtracted this AGN unresolved component from the 8-13 micron spectra of the knots and the nucleus, and measured equivalent widths (EWs) of the 11.3 micron Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) feature which are typical of pure starburst galaxies. This EW is larger in the nucleus than in the knots, confirming that, at least in the case of Mrk 1066, the AGN dilutes, rather than destroys, the molecules responsible for the 11.3 micron PAH emission. By comparing the nuclear GTC/CC spectrum with the Spitzer/IRS spectrum of the galaxy, we find that the AGN component that dominates the continuum emission at wavelengths below 15 micron on scales of ~60 pc (90-100%) decreases to 35-50% when the emission of the central ~830 pc is considered. On the other hand, the AGN contribution dominates the 15-25 micron emission (75%) on the scales probed by Spitzer/IRS. We find a good match between the MIR morphology of Mrk 1066 and the extended Pab, Brg and [O III] emission. This coincidence implies that the 8.7 micron emission is probing star formation, dust in the narrow-line region, and the oval structure previously detected in the near-infrared. On the other hand, the Chandra soft X-ray morphology does not match any of the previous, contrary to what it is generally assumed for Seyfert galaxies., Comment: 16 pages including appendix, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Gemini's Fast Turnaround program is intended to greatly decrease the time from having an idea to acquiring the supporting data. The scheme will offer monthly proposal submission opportunities, and proposals will be reviewed by the principal investigators or co-investigators of other proposals submitted during the same round. We present high-angular (~0.4") resolution mid-infrared (MIR) polarimetric observations in the 8.7 ${\mu}$m and 11.6 ${\mu}$m filters of Cygnus A using CanariCam on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. A highly polarized nucleus is observed with a degree of polarization of 11${\pm}$3% and 12${\pm}$3% and position angle of polarization of 27${\pm}$8 degrees and 35${\pm}$8 degrees in a 0.38" (~380 pc) aperture for each filter. The observed rising of the polarized flux density with increasing wavelength is consistent with synchrotron radiation from the pc-scale jet close to the core of Cygnus A. Based on our polarization model, the synchrotron emission from the pc-scale jet is estimated to be 14% and 17% of the total flux density in the 8.7 ${\mu}$m and 11.6 ${\mu}$m filters, respectively. A blackbody component with a characteristic temperature of 220 K accounts for >75% of the observed MIR total flux density. The blackbody emission arises from a combination of (1) dust emission in the torus; and (2) diffuse dust emission around the nuclear region, but the contributions of the two components cannot be well constrained in these observations., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures (Accepted for publication in ApJ)

We present Gran Telescopio CANARIAS CanariCam 8.7$\mu$m imaging and 7.5-13$\mu$m spectroscopy of six local systems known to host an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and have nuclear star formation. Our main goal is to investigate whether the molecules responsible for the 11.3$\mu$m polyclyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) feature are destroyed in the close vicinity of an AGN. We detect 11.3$\mu$m PAH feature emission in the nuclear regions of the galaxies as well as extended PAH emission over a few hundred parsecs. The equivalent width (EW) of the feature shows a minimum at the nucleus but increases with increasing radial distances, reaching typical star-forming values a few hundred parsecs away from the nucleus. The reduced nuclear EW are interpreted as due to increased dilution from the AGN continuum rather than destruction of the PAH molecules. We conclude that at least those molecules responsible for the 11.3$\mu$m PAH feature survive in the nuclear environments as close as 10pc from the AGN and for Seyfert-like AGN luminosities. We propose that material in the dusty tori, nuclear gas disks, and/or host galaxies of AGN is likely to provide the column densities necessary to protect the PAH molecules from the AGN radiation field., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 19 pages, 13 figures

We present high angular resolution ($\sim$0.5$^\prime$$^\prime$) MIR spectra of the powerful radio galaxy, Cygnus A, obtained with the Subaru telescope. The overall shape of the spectra agree with previous high angular resolution MIR observations, as well as previous Spitzer spectra. Our spectra, both on and off nucleus, show a deep silicate absorption feature. The absorption feature can be modeled with a blackbody obscured by cold dust or a clumpy torus. The deep silicate feature is best fit by a simple model of a screened blackbody, suggesting foreground absorption plays a significant, if not dominant role, in shaping the spectrum of Cygnus A. This foreground absorption prevents a clear view of the central engine and surrounding torus, making it difficult to quantify the extent the torus attributes to the obscuration of the central engine, but does not eliminate the need for a torus in Cygnus A.

We present nuclear spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from 1 to 18 micron of a small sample of nearby, nearly face-on and undisturbed Seyfert galaxies without prominent nuclear dust lanes. These nuclear SEDs probe the central ~35 pc of the galaxies, on average, and include photometric and spectroscopic infrared (IR) data. We use these SEDs, the clumpy torus models of Nenkova et al. and a Bayesian approach to study the sensitivity of different IR wavelengths to the torus parameters. We find that high angular resolution 8-13 micron spectroscopy alone reliably constrains the number of clumps and their optical depth (N0 and tau_V). On the other hand, we need a combination of mid- and near-IR subarcsecond resolution photometry to constrain torus width and inclination, as well as the radial distribution of the clouds (sigma, i and q). For flat radial profiles (q=0,1), it is possible to constrain the extent of the mid-IR-emitting dust within the torus (Y) when N-band spectroscopy is available, in addition to near-IR photometry. Finally, by fitting different combinations of average and individual Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 data, we find that, in general, for undisturbed, nearly face-on Seyferts without prominent nuclear dust lanes, the minimum combination of data necessary to reliably constrain all the torus parameters is J+K+M-band photometry + N-band spectroscopy., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted in MNRAS

We present mid-infrared (MIR) 8-13micron spectroscopy of the nuclear regions of the interacting galaxy Arp299 (IC694+NGC3690) obtained with CanariCam (CC) on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). The high angular resolution (~0.3-0.6arcsec) of the data allows us to probe nuclear physical scales between 60 and 120pc, which is a factor of 10 improvement over previous MIR spectroscopic observations of this system. The GTC/CC spectroscopy displays evidence of deeply embedded Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) activity in both nuclei. The GTC/CC nuclear spectrum of NGC3690/Arp299-B1 can be explained as emission from AGN-heated dust in a clumpy torus with both a high covering factor and high extinction along the line of sight. The estimated bolometric luminosity of the AGN in NGC3690 is 3.2(+/-0.6)x10^44 erg/s. The nuclear GTC/CC spectrum of IC694/Arp299-A shows 11.3micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission stemming from a deeply embedded (A_V~24mag) region of less than 120pc in size. There is also a continuum-emitting dust component. If associated with th putative AGN in IC694, we estimate that it would be approximately 5 times less luminous than the AGN in NGC3690. The presence of dual AGN activity makes Arp299 a good example to study such phenomenon in the early coalescence phase of interacting galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Recent theoretical and observational works indicate the presence of a correlation between the star formation rate (SFR) and the active galactic nuclei (AGN) luminosity (and, therefore, the black hole accretion rate) of Seyfert galaxies. This suggests a physical connection between the gas forming stars on kpc scales and the gas on sub-pc scales that is feeding the black hole. We compiled the largest sample of Seyfert galaxies to date with high angular resolution (0.4-0.8 arcsec) mid-infrared (8-13 micron) spectroscopy. The sample includes 29 Seyfert galaxies drawn from the AGN Revised Shapley-Ames catalogue. At a median distance of 33 Mpc, our data allow us to probe nuclear regions on scales of 65 pc (median value). We found no general evidence of suppression of the 11.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in the vicinity of these AGN, and used this feature as a proxy for the SFR. We detected the 11.3 micron PAH feature in the nuclear spectra of 45% of our sample. The derived nuclear SFRs are, on average, five times lower than those measured in circumnuclear regions of 600 pc in size (median value). However, the projected nuclear SFR densities are a factor of 20 higher than those measured on circumnuclear scales. This indicates that the SF activity per unit area in the central 65 pc of Seyfert galaxies is much higher than at larger distances from their nuclei. We studied the connection between the nuclear SFR and the black hole accretion rate and showed that numerical simulations reproduce fairly well our observed relation., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures. We use recent high-resolution infrared (IR; 1 - 20 micron) photometry to examine the origin of the IR emission in low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN). The data are compared with published model fits that describe the spectral energy distribution of LLAGN in terms of an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF), truncated thin accretion disk, and jet. The truncated disk in these models is usually not luminous enough to explain the observed IR emission, and in all cases its spectral shape is much narrower than the broad IR peaks in the data. Synchrotron radiation from the jet appears to be important in very radio-loud nuclei, but the detection of strong silicate emission features in many objects indicates that dust must also contribute. We investigate this point by fitting the IR SED of NGC 3998 using dusty torus and optically thin (tau_MIR ~ 1) dust shell models. While more detailed modeling is necessary, these initial results suggest that dust may account for the nuclear mid-IR emission of many LLAGN., Comment: ApJ, accepted; 6 pages, 4 figures

An optically and geometrically thick torus obscures the central engine of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) from some lines of sight. From a magnetohydrodynamical framework, the torus can be considered to be a particular region of clouds surrounding the central engine where the clouds are dusty and optically thick. In this framework, the magnetic field plays an important role in the creation, morphology and evolution of the torus. If the dust grains within the clouds are assumed to be aligned by paramagnetic alignment, then the ratio of the intrinsic polarisation and visual extinction, P(%)/Av, is a function of the magnetic field strength. To estimate the visual extinction through the torus and constrain the polarisation mechanisms in the nucleus of AGN, we developed a polarisation model to fit both the total and polarised flux in a 1.2" (~263pc) aperture of the type 2 AGN, IC5063. The polarisation model is consistent with the nuclear polarisation observed at K being produced by dichroic absorption from aligned dust grains with a visual extinction through the torus of 48$\pm$2 mag. We estimated the intrinsic polarisation arising from dichroic absorption to be P$_{K}^{dic}$=12.5$\pm$2.7%. We consider the physical conditions and environment of the gas and dust for the torus of IC5063. Then, through paramagnetic alignment, we estimate a magnetic field strength in the range of 12-128mG in the NIR emitting regions of the torus of IC5063. Alternatively, we estimate the magnetic field strength in the plane of the sky using the Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. The minimum magnetic field strength in the plane of the sky is estimated to be 13 and 41 mG depending of the conditions within the torus of IC5063. We present new far-infrared (70-500micron) Herschel PACS and SPIRE imaging observations as well as new mid-IR Gemini/T-ReCS imaging (8.7 and 18.3micron) and spectroscopy of the inner Lindblad resonance (ILR) region (R<2.5kpc) of the spiral galaxy NGC1365. We complemented these observations with archival Spitzer imaging and spectral mapping observations. The ILR region of NGC1365 contains a Seyfert 1.5 nucleus and a ring of star formation with an approximate diameter of 2kpc. The strong star formation activity in the ring is resolved by the Herschel/PACS imaging data, as well as by the Spitzer 24micron continuum emission, [NeII]12.81micron line emission, and 6.2 and 11.3micron PAH emission. The AGN is the brightest source in the central regions up to lambda~24micron, but it becomes increasingly fainter in the far-infrared when compared to the emission originating in the infrared clusters (or groups of them) located in the ring. We modeled the AGN unresolved infrared emission with the CLUMPY torus models and estimated that the AGN contributes only to a small fraction (~5%) of the infrared emission produced in the inner ~5kpc. We fitted the non-AGN 24-500micron spectral energy distribution of the ILR region and found that the dust temperatures and mass are similar to those of other nuclear and circumnuclear starburst regions. Finally we showed that within the ILR region of NGC1365 most of the on-going star formation activity is taking place in dusty regions as probed by the 24micron emission., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present high-resolution mid-infrared (MIR) imaging, nuclear spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and archival Spitzer spectra for 22 low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN; Lbol \lesssim 10^42 erg/sec). Infrared (IR) observations may advance our understanding of the accretion flows in LLAGN, the fate of the obscuring torus at low accretion rates, and, perhaps, the star formation histories of these objects. However, while comprehensively studied in higher-luminosity Seyferts and quasars, the nuclear IR properties of LLAGN have not yet been well-determined. We separate the present LLAGN sample into three categories depending on their Eddington ratio and radio emission, finding different IR characteristics for each class. (I) At the low-luminosity, low-Eddington ratio (log Lbol/LEdd < -4.6) end of the sample, we identify "host-dominated" galaxies with strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon bands that may indicate active (circum-)nuclear star formation. (II) Some very radio-loud objects are also present at these low Eddington ratios. The IR emission in these nuclei is dominated by synchrotron radiation, and some are likely to be unobscured type 2 AGN that genuinely lack a broad line region. (III) At higher Eddington ratios, strong, compact nuclear sources are visible in the MIR images. The nuclear SEDs of these galaxies are diverse; some resemble typical Seyfert nuclei, while others lack a well-defined MIR "dust bump". Strong silicate emission is present in many of these objects. We speculate that this, together with high ratios of silicate strength to hydrogen column density, could suggest optically thin dust and low dust-to-gas ratios, in accordance with model predictions that LLAGN do not host a Seyfert-like obscuring torus., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

We present near-to-mid-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 21 Seyfert galaxies, using subarcsecond resolution imaging data. Our aim is to compare the properties Seyfert 1 (Sy1) and Seyfert 2 (Sy2) tori using clumpy torus models and a Bayesian approach to fit the infrared (IR) nuclear SEDs. These dusty tori have physical sizes smaller than 6 pc radius, as derived from our fits. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) unification schemes account for a variety of observational differences in terms of viewing geometry. However, we find evidence that strong unification may not hold, and that the immediate dusty surroundings of Sy1 and Sy2 nuclei are intrinsically different. The Type 2 tori studied here are broader, have more clumps, and these clumps have lower optical depths than those of Type 1 tori. The larger the covering factor of the torus, the smaller the probability of having direct view of the AGN, and vice-versa. In our sample, Sy2 tori have larger covering factors (C_T=0.95+/-0.02) and smaller escape probabilities than those of Sy1 (C_T=0.5+/-0.1). Thus, on the basis of the results presented here, the classification of a Seyfert galaxy may depend more on the intrinsic properties of the torus rather than on its mere inclination, in contradiction with the simplest unification model., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. We have obtained high-resolution mid-infrared (MIR) imaging, nuclear spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and archival Spitzer spectra for 22 low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN; L_bol < 5 x 10^42 erg/s). Infrared (IR) observations may advance our understanding of the accretion flows in LLAGN, the fate of the obscuring torus at low accretion rates, and, perhaps, the star formation histories of these objects. However, while comprehensively studied in higher-luminosity Seyferts and quasars, the nuclear IR properties of LLAGN have not yet been well-determined. In these proceedings we summarise the results for the LLAGN at the relatively high-luminosity, high-Eddington ratio end of the sample. Strong, compact nuclear sources are visible in the MIR images of these objects, with luminosities consistent with or slightly in execss of that predicted by the standard MIR/X-ray relation. Their broadband nuclear SEDs are diverse; some resemble typical Seyfert nuclei, while others possess less of a well-defined MIR ``dust bump''. Strong silicate emission is present in many of these objects.
