1. Room-temperature magnetism and controlled cation distribution in vanadium ferrite thin films

Abstract

Spinel oxides demonstrate significant technological promise due to the vast array of interrelated physical properties that their unique structure supports. Specifically, the Fe1+xV2-xO4 spinel system garners extensive interest due to the presence of orbitally ordered states and multiferroism. This study focuses on the elaboration of high-quality Fe2VO4 (x = 1) thin films on MgO substrates via pulsed laser deposition. Structural analyses confirm the epitaxial growth of the films, their high crystallinity and fully strained nature. The cationic distribution and stoichiometry were investigated using Resonant Elastic X-ray Scattering experiments, in conjunction with comprehensive characterization of the films' physical and electrical properties. The films exhibit room-temperature magnetism, with a magnetization consistent with the (Fe3+)Td[Fe2+V3+2]OhO4 inverse spinel structure unveiled by anomalous diffraction. This work represents the inaugural successful deposition of Fe2VO4 thin films, thereby expanding the family of spinel vanadium oxide thin films with a new member that demonstrates room-temperature magnetic properties.

2. Unveiling Unconventional Ferroelectric Switching in Multiferroic Ga0.6 Fe1.4O3 Thin Films Through Multiscale Electron Microscopy Investigations

Abstract

Understanding the polarization switching mechanisms at play in ferroelectric materials is crucial for their exploitation in electronic devices. The conventional centrosymmetric reference structure-based mechanism which accounts for ferroelectricity in most of the usual displacive ferroelectric materials is too energy-demanding for some newly diagnosed ferroelectric materials such as the Ga2-xFexO3 (0.8 < x < 1.4) compounds. Some alternative theoretical propositions have been made and need experimental confirmation. A dual-scale electron microscopy study is performed on thin films of the Ga0.6Fe1.4O3 multiferroic compound. A wide scale precession-assisted electron diffraction tomography study first allows the determination of the structure the compound adopts in thin films, and even permits the refinement of the atomic positions within this structure. Cationic mobility is suggested for two of the atomic positions through the existence of extra electronic density. A local in situ high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy study then allows confirming these mobilities by directly spotting the cationic displacements on successively acquired images. The whole study confirms an unconventional switching mechanism via local domain wall motion in this compound.

Abstract

Single crystals of the layered copper hydroxide dodecylsulfate Cu-2(OH)(3)(C12H25SO4) have been obtained for the first time, by controlled hydrolysis of an aqueous copper acetate solution. Interestingly, this compound crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric space group (P2(1), a = 5.591(10) angstrom, b = 6.108(11) angstrom, c= 26.96(5) angstrom, a = gamma = 90, beta = 92.76), which is further confirmed by nonlinear optical measurements. Within the course of the synthesis, a probable intermediate between Cu(OAc)(2): H2O and the layered Cu-2(OH)(3)(C12H25SO4) was isolated and characterized. X-ray structure analysis showed that this intermediate presents a ribbon-like structure of formula Cu-3(C12H25SO4)(2)(CH3COO)(2)(OH)(2)(H2O)(2). The magnetic properties of the layered Cu-2(OH)(3)(C12H25SO4) have been analyzed in the high-temperature region (T > 20 K) by considering a high-temperature series expansion for a S = 1/2 Heisenberg two-dimensional triangular lattice. At lower temperature, the compound shows a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering (T-N = 10.8 K). The ribbon-like compound Cu-3(C12H25SO4)(2)(CH3COO)(2)(OH)(2)(H2O)(2) presents an overall antiferromagnetic behavior, resulting from a combination of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions between nearest neighbors within the chains.

Abstract

International audience; The cationic distribution is decisive for both the magnetic and electric properties of complex oxides. While it can be easily determined in bulk materials using classical methods such as X-ray or neutron diffraction, difficulties arise for thin films owing to the relatively small amount of material to probe. It is shown here that a full determination of the cationic site distribution in thin films is possible through an optimized processing of resonant elastic X-ray scattering experiments. The method is illustrated using gallium ferrite Ga 2-x Fe x O 3 samples which have been the focus of an increasing number of studies this past decade. They indeed represent an alternative to the, to date, only room-temperature magnetoelectric compound BiFeO 3. The methodology can be applied to determine the element distribution over the various crystallographic sites in any crystallized system.

Abstract

Abstract: Core‐shell ferro(i)magnetic@antiferromagnetic (F(i)M@AFM) nanoparticles exhibiting exchange bias coupling are very promising to push back the superparamagnetic limits. However, their intrinsic magnetic properties can be strongly affected by interparticle interactions. This work reports on the collective properties of Fe3–dO4@CoO core‐shell nanoparticles as function of the structure of their assembly. The structure of nanoparticle assembly is controlled by a copper (I) catalyzed alkyne–azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) “click” reaction between complementary functional groups located at the surface of both substrates and nanoparticles. 2D arrays of nanoparticles with tunable sizes ranging from clusters of few nanoparticles to a dense and homogenous monolayer were prepared. The spatial arrangement of nanoparticles strongly influences the exchange bias coupling which is significantly enhanced for large 2D nanoparticle assemblies and, even more in 3D assemblies such as powder, which favour weak and random dipolar interactions. Abstract

In this work, we investigate the direct formation of crystalline silicon thin films using ECR-PECVD process on aluminum substrates for solar cells applications. The aluminum substrate offers the advantages of being flexible and highly reflective in addition to serve as the back contact for the cell device. The substrates were pure aluminum or silicon rich aluminum sheets. Monocrystalline silicon substrates were used as reference substrates. Silane and hydrogen were used as precursor gases. Silicon growth was done at different substrate temperatures. The grown silicon films were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, SIMS and XRD techniques. Silicon thicknesses between 230 and 1370 nm were obtained on different types of aluminum substrates. The analyses show that the grown silicon films formed at 480 °C under SiH4: 40 sccm and H2 = 10 sccm are amorphous silicon at the initial stage and become nanocrystalline (nc-Si:H) as the deposition proceeds. The crystalline fraction of those films extracted from Raman spectra is found around 40-60% and XRD analysis shows grain silicon size between 41 and 83 Å. Finally, SIMS analysis have revealed graded doping distribution profiles which is indicative of the formation of a nc-Si:H(i)/nc-Si:H (p+)/Al substrate, well suited for solar cell structures. Abstract

CZTS thin films are deposited onto glass and Mo-coated glass substrates by ultrasonic spray technique, followed by a sulfurization under argon atmosphere at 500 °C during 1 h. We have investigated how the addition of the alkali can influence Cu2ZnSnS4 thin films properties. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy proved that CZTS has the kesterite structure with a preferential orientation along 112. The values of Cu/(Zn+Sn) and (Zn/Sn) ratios, determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy, for undoped CZTS and alkali-doped CZTS are observed to be affected by the alkali doping. The electrical resistivity, for CZTS films deposited on glass substrates, decreased after alkali doping from 9.2 10−1 Ω · cm for undoped CZTS to reach 1.8 10−1 and 4.2 10−1 Ω · cm for 15% content of Na and K, respectively. Abstract

The cationic distribution is decisive for both the magnetic and electric properties of complex oxides. While it can be easily determined in bulk materials using classical methods such as X-ray or neutron diffraction, difficulties arise for thin films owing to the relatively small amount of material to probe. It is shown here that a full determination of the cationic site distribution in thin films is possible through an optimized processing of resonant elastic X-ray scattering experiments. The method is illustrated using gallium ferrite Ga2− xFe xO3 samples which have been the focus of an increasing number of studies this past decade. They indeed represent an alternative to the, to date, only room-temperature magnetoelectric compound BiFeO3. The methodology can be applied to determine the element distribution over the various crystallographic sites in any crystallized system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
