Abstract

Coherent gate errors are a concern in many proposed quantum computing architectures. These errors can be effectively handled through composite pulse sequences for single-qubit gates, however, such techniques are less feasible for entangling operations. In this work, we benchmark our coherent errors by comparing the actual performance of composite single-qubit gates to the predicted performance based on characterization of individual single-qubit rotations. We then propose a compilation technique, which we refer to as hidden inverses, that creates circuits robust to these coherent errors. We present experimental data showing that these circuits suppress both overrotation and phase misalignment errors in our trapped ion system., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

In a large scale trapped atomic ion quantum computer, high-fidelity two-qubit gates need to be extended over all qubits with individual control. We realize and characterize high-fidelity two-qubit gates in a system with up to 4 ions using radial modes. The ions are individually addressed by two tightly focused beams steered using micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) mirrors. We deduce a gate fidelity of 99.49(7)% in a two-ion chain and 99.30(6)% in a four-ion chain by applying a sequence of up to 21 two-qubit gates and measuring the final state fidelity. We characterize the residual errors and discuss methods to further improve the gate fidelity towards values that are compatible with fault-tolerant quantum computation., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Ion trap systems are a leading platform for large scale quantum computers. Trapped ion qubit crystals are fully-connected and reconfigurable, owing to their long range Coulomb interaction that can be modulated with external optical forces. However, the spectral crowding of collective motional modes could pose a challenge to the control of such interactions for large numbers of qubits. Here, we show that high-fidelity quantum gate operations are still possible with very large trapped ion crystals, simplifying the scaling of ion trap quantum computers. To this end, we present analytical work that determines how parallel entangling gates produce a crosstalk error that falls off as the inverse cube of the distance between the pairs. We also show experimental work demonstrating entangling gates on a fully-connected chain of seventeen $^{171}{\rm{Yb}}^{+}$ ions with fidelities as high as $97(1)\%$., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Pressure ulcer is a serious injury which affects the skin integrity of patients and is a financial burdens to healthcare providers worldwide. Pressure ulcers are usually caused either by excessive stress or ischemia which appears as deep tissue injury and superficial pressure ulcers respectively. Some of the pressure ulcers are known to be caused by the application of medical devices. These medical device related pressure ulcers are usually superficial and contribute to a significant numbers of the total number of pressure ulcers. The engineering community often focuses on the aetiology of excessive stress by developing computational models and investigating the in vivo conditions when a patient is subject to high loads. Limited attempts have been made on developing computational models for the aetiology of ischemia. Hence, it is the aim of the study to develop computational model to investigate the deformation of the cutaneous blood vessels in relation to the formation of superficial pressure ulcers. This study provides information on the magnitudes of interface pressure experienced by patients in clinical setting experimentally by using pressure mapping system on both static and dynamic mattresses. Computational models are developed to demonstrate the in vivo cutaneous conditions and the relationship of mechanical loadings and the deformation of cutaneous blood vessels is established. The computational results is further correlated to a set of physiological data acquired by using laser Doppler technique to enhance the clinical relevance. The computational models and the established correlation is applied in three situations including; evaluating the effect of oxygen facial delivery masks on patients’ skin; understanding the effect of same magnitude mechanical load on different skin conditions, and converting an external parameter, interface pressure from mattresses testing, into a physiological parameter. The overall study provides a novel tool for the medical device developers in evaluating the effects of their devices on patients’ skin in relation to the formation of superficial pressure ulcers. The computational models and the established correlation with the physiological data allows the clinicians to understanding the in vivo cutaneous conditions of patients rather than just evaluating an external parameter.

18. Entangling an arbitrary pair of qubits in a long ion crystal

Abstract

It is well established that the collective motion of ion crystals can be used as a quantum bus for multi-qubit entanglement. However, as the number of ions increases, it becomes difficult to directly entangle ions far apart and resolve all motional modes of the ion crystal. We introduce a scalable and flexible scheme for efficient entanglement between any pair of ions within a large ion chain, using an evenly distributed 50-ion crystal as an example. By performing amplitude and frequency modulation, we find high-fidelity pulse sequences that primarily drive a transverse motional mode with a wavelength of 4 ion spacings. We present two $500 \mu s$ pulses that can in theory suppress gate errors due to residual motion to below $10^{-4}$, and observe a trade-off between gate power and robustness against unwanted frequency offsets., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

In an ion trap quantum computer, collective motional modes are used to entangle two or more qubits in order to execute multi-qubit logical gates. Any residual entanglement between the internal and motional states of the ions results in loss of fidelity, especially when there are many spectator ions in the crystal. We propose using a frequency-modulated (FM) driving force to minimize such errors. In simulation, we obtained an optimized FM two-qubit gate that can suppress errors to less than 0.01\% and is robust against frequency drifts over $\pm$1 kHz. Experimentally, we have obtained a two-qubit gate fidelity of $98.3(4)\%$, a state-of-the-art result for two-qubit gates with 5 ions.

However, this requires sufficient appraisal for clinicians and researchers to adequately understand nomenclature and key concepts commonly used in this field. This article aims to elucidate the diverse applications of facial processing tasks, such as facial landmark extraction, face detection, face tracking, facial expression recognition and action unit detection, and their relevance to ophthalmology and other medical specialties. The keywords 'ophthalmology', 'facial artificial intelligence', 'facial recognition' and 'periorbital measurements' were used on PubMed and Ovid, between September 2012 and September 2022, to identify and screen for eligible articles. Studies reporting on human patients in ophthalmology, plastic, maxillofacial and cosmetic surgery with ocular lesions whose facial biometrics were processed by AI and written in the English language were included. A total of 291 and 513 articles were identified on PubMed and Ovid respectively. Twenty articles were included for analysis in this literature review after duplicates, inaccessible articles and articles without full manuscripts were excluded. Although fully automated algorithms can share the workload in healthcare systems and relieve strains on manpower, rigorous testing is crucial, followed by the challenges of convincing management bodies that it would work in reality, coupled with the costs of implementing specialised functional hardware and software. While patients have a valid concern that it would reduce physical contact with clinicians, it is important for clinicians not to replace clinical decision-making with AI alone. Abstract

During fall periods in 2002, 2003 and 2004 three major oceanographic expeditions were carried out in Mamala Bay, Hawaii. These were part of the RASP Remote Anthropogenic Sensing Program. Ikonos and Quickbird optical satellite images of sea surface glint revealed ~100 m spectral anomalies in km^2 averaging patches in regions leading from the Honolulu Sand Island Municipal Outfall diffuser to distances up to 20 km. To determine the mechanisms behind this phenomenon, the RASP expeditions monitored the waters adjacent to the outfall with an array of hydrographic, optical and turbulence microstructure sensors in anomaly and ambient background regions. Drogue tracks and mean turbulence parameters for 2x10^4 microstructure patches were analyzed to understand complex turbulence, fossil turbulence and zombie turbulence near-vertical internal wave transport processes. The dominant mechanism appears to be generic to stratified natural fluids including planet and star atmospheres and is termed beamed zombie turbulence maser action (BZTMA). Most of the bottom turbulent kinetic energy is converted to ~100 m fossil turbulence waves. These activate secondary (zombie) turbulence in outfall fossil turbulence patches that transmit heat, mass, chemical species, momentum and information vertically to the sea surface for detection in an efficient maser action. Abstract

Turbulence is defined as an eddy-like state of fluid motion where the inertial-vortex forces of the eddies are larger than any of the other forces that tend to damp the eddies out. Energy cascades of irrotational flows from large scales to small are non-turbulent, even if they supply energy to turbulence. Turbulent flows are rotational and cascade from small scales to large, with feedback. Viscous forces limit the smallest turbulent eddy size to the Kolmogorov scale. In stratified fluids, buoyancy forces limit large vertical overturns to the Ozmidov scale and convert the largest turbulent eddies into a unique class of saturated, non-propagating, internal waves, termed fossil-vorticity-turbulence. These waves have the same energy but different properties and spectral forms than the original turbulence patch. The Gibson (1980, 1986) theory of fossil turbulence applies universal similarity theories of turbulence and turbulent mixing to the vertical evolution of an isolated patch of turbulence in a stratified fluid as its growth is constrained and fossilized by buoyancy forces. Abstract

Construction industry has reported among the highest accident and fatality rates over the past decade. In particular, crane lifting is a notably hazardous operation on construction sites, causing fatal accidents like workers being struck by the boom or objects fallen from tower cranes. Manual monitoring by on-site safety officers is labour-intensive and error-prone, while incorporating computer vision techniques into surveillance cameras would enable more automatic and continuous monitoring of construction site operations. However, existing studies for lifting safety mainly detect the presence of individual objects (e.g. workers, crane components), while a methodology is needed to predict their potential collision more proactively before accidents happen. This paper develops a vision-based framework for predictive lifting safety monitoring, including three modules: (1) object detection and classification: targeting at hook and lifting materials to enable danger zone estimation, along with workers and their personal protective equipment; (2) worker movement tracking and prediction: analyzing the historical moving trajectory of each unique worker to foresee his/her future movement in certain period ahead; (3) multi-level safety assessment: issuing predictive warning in real-time upon any crane-worker conflict foreseen. The proposed framework is applicable to real-time site video processing and enables end-to-end lifting safety monitoring with instant alerting upon unsafe scenarios observed. Importantly, the proposed framework predicts the future movement of workers to proactively identify potential site hazard, in order to trigger earlier safety alert for more timely decision-making. With a large video dataset capturing tower crane operations, the proposed framework demonstrates competitive accuracy and computational efficiency in crane-worker conflict prediction, validating its practicality for real-time lifting safety monitoring
