Benthic dinoflagellates constitute a group of microalgae that inhabit the ocean floor, adhering to substrates such as coral, seagrasses, and sand. Certain species within this group have the potential to produce toxins. Ocean warming could increase the occurrence of harmful benthic dinoflagellate blooms, which pose a significant threat to coastal ecosystems in tropical and subtropical regions. However, the impact of water temperatures on the growth and toxicity of these harmful algal species remains uncertain. In this study, we investigated the physiological and transcriptional responses, as well as toxin production, of Gambierdiscus belizeanus, a common dinoflagellate responsible for increasing ciguatera risk, when exposed to temperatures ranging from 18 °C to 28 °C. Based on 70-day growth curves, G. belizeanus grew fastest at 26 °C, with a maximum specific growth rate of 0.088 ± 0.018 div·d -1 . At stationary phase of algal cultures, the photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) of algal cells at 26 °C was the highest (0.56 ± 0.02) among all treatments; significant decreases in pigment contents, including chlorophyll a, chlorophyll c, and carotenoids, were observed in algal cells exposed to 18 °C. However, during the exponential phase, only algal cultures exposed to 22 °C exhibited significantly lower levels of chlorophyll a and photosynthetic efficiency. The levels of algal toxins (44-methylgambierone and gambierone) in the 18 °C and 22 °C groups were significantly higher than those in groups exposed to higher temperatures (26 °C and 28 °C). Transcriptomic analysis showed that improved growth and photosynthesis at higher temperatures (26 °C and 28 °C) corresponded with the increased activity of crucial genes in carbon metabolism and photosynthesis. These genes, essential for energy and growth, could potentially facilitate the spread of G. belizeanus blooms. Lower temperatures led to molecular adaptations in G. belizeanus, such as modulated cell cycle genes and suppressed photosynthesis, explaining the physiological changes observed. Furthermore, the activation of toxin production-related genes under lower temperatures suggests a potential risk to ecosystems due to bioaccumulation of toxins. This study elucidates the distinct cellular and molecular responses of harmful dinoflagellates to variations in seawater temperature. These findings enhance our understanding of the emerging threats that toxin-producing benthic dinoflagellates pose to coastal ecosystems. To defuse risks of antibiotic residues in effluent to achieve safe wastewater reuse, direct hydrolysis of the functional group responsible for the antibacterial activity, such as the of β-lactam ring in β-lactam antibiotics, has been recognized as an efficient and cost-effective strategy. However, the instability of natural hydrolases limits their use in treating antibiotic-containing wastewater. Herein, inspired by the active site of natural hydrolase, a Ce-based nanohydrolase was created for rapid hydrolysis of β-lactam antibiotics. The typical β-lactam antibiotic, penicillin G (PG), could be totally removed by the nanohydrolase within 2 min with a hydrolysis efficiency of 44%, and the hydrolysis efficiency could reach 98% within 10 min. It revealed that Ce(IV) in the nanohydrolase adsorbed PG via Lewis acid-Lewis base interaction to activate the β-lactam ring, while the -OH on Ce(III) served as nucleophile to attack the β-lactam ring, thereby promoting the hydrolysis of PG. The Ce-based nanohydrolase also showed good catalytic hydrolysis performance towards other commonly used β-lactam antibiotics and structurally related chemicals, implying its substrate universality. In addition to having high hydrolytic activity similar to that of natural hydrolases, this nanohydrolase exhibited extraordinary reusability and potential for practical applications that natural hydrolases do not possess. Deposition in the deep ocean plays a crucial role in the global sink of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), yet observation-based assessments of their biogeochemical cycling are scarce. In this study, surface sediments were collected from deep sea of the Eastern Indian Ocean (2161-4545 m) and analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Long-range atmospheric transport was identified as the dominant pathway for OCPs (36.7-762.0 pg/g) and PCBs (25.5-110.0 pg/g) to reach the basin area from surrounding agricultural, manufacturing, and combustion emissions. Besides the TOC-dependent deposition, unique hydrodynamic conditions in the mid-ocean ridge might influence the transport and accumulation of POPs by altering their resuspension and repartitioning processes. Results of the machine learning analysis suggested that logK OW , TOC content, and pollutant residence time in the ocean are important parameters in determining PCB concentrations in the Indian Ocean. Additionally, concentrations of POPs generally exhibited logarithmic relationships with microplastic abundances, indicating that microplastics act as potential carriers for transporting these pollutants to deep-sea sediments. This study revealed the biogeochemical controls on the deposition of OCPs and PCBs in the Indian Ocean by combining field observation and model simulation. The widespread occurrence of liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) in the environment has raised concerns about their persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity (PBT). Here we review the lifecycle of environmental LCMs, focusing on their occurrences, emission sources, human exposure routes, and toxicity. Industrial emissions from Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) manufacturing and e-waste recycling are the primary point sources of LCMs. In addition, emissions from LCD products, air conditioning units, wastewater treatment plants, and landfills contribute to environmental occurrence of LCMs as secondary sources. Dietary routes were identified as the primary exposure pathways to humans. E-waste dismantling workers and infants/children are vulnerable populations to LCMs exposure. Exposure to LCMs has been shown to potentially induce oxidative stress, metabolic disorders, and endocrine disruption. Understanding the fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the deep ocean is crucial for elucidating the biogeochemical cycle of organic carbon under anthropogenic influences. In this study, surface sediments were collected from the deep sea of the Eastern Indian Ocean (water depth: 2161-4545 m) and analyzed for 29 semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs), including parent PAHs and their alkylated derivatives, as well as source biomarkers. The target SVOCs (∑ 29 SVOCs: 23.0-183 ng/g, ∑ 16 PAHs: 11.3-93.3 ng/g) were mainly from pyrogenic sources, namely coal combustion, traffic emissions, and wood burning. The contributions from wood burning and coal combustion exhibited distinct trends with increasing total organic carbon contents, suggesting different dominant biogeochemical behaviors. Major fractions of PAHs from wood burning can be biodegraded or photodegraded, leading to a depletion-dominated fate in the water column. Conversely, PAHs from coal combustion showed an accumulation-dominated fate via their sedimentation due to their persistence and hydrophobicity. This study highlights the distinct biogeochemical fates of PAHs from biomass or fossil fuel combustion in deep oceans and has implications for the marine cycle of refractory organic carbon under anthropogenic impacts.

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) readily deposit in sediments upon entering estuaries and adjacent seas. Time-series investigations are indispensable for the long-term monitoring of historical releases and identifying CPs of emerging concerns in the marine environment. In this study, short-, medium-, and long-chain CPs (SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs) were investigated using time-of-flight high-resolution mass spectrometry (ToF-HRMS) in sediment cores, dated between the 1920s and the 2010s sampled from Hong Kong waters and Lingdingyang of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), South China. Levels of SCCPs remained steady since the 1980s, while increasing trends of MCCPs and LCCPs were observed, indicating a market supply shift from SCCPs to MCCPs and LCCPs, potentially influenced by global restrictions. This is the first study to report C 18-31 CPs in Chinese marine sediments. C > 20 very long-chain CPs (C > 20 vLCCPs) subcategorized from LCCPs were semi-quantified via ToF-HRMS and positively correlated with those of other CP categories, implying their synchronized release in the investigated regions. C > 20 vLCCPs, contributing an average of 27% of total CP concentrations in two cores, were found at higher levels than LCCPs (7%). Hence, the risk of C > 20 vLCCP contamination should not be ignored. Weathering is a significant process that alters the properties of microplastics (MPs) and consequently affects their environmental behaviors. In this study, we introduced a novel approach based on polarized light scattering technique, which offers advantages in terms of rapid, high-throughput, and submicron-sized detection. This technique was successfully applied to characterize the weathered MPs after a 180-day laboratory simulation of coastal environments. By employing polarization measurements, we obtained a 46-dimensional matrix data set for the weathered MP fragments and subsequently processed them using a backpropagation neural network. The successful extraction of effective polarization pulses confirmed the presence of MP fragments within the size range of 0.2-60 μm, yielding total accuracies for size classification ranging from 78.9 to 86.9%. Furthermore, this technique achieved an overall accuracy of 93.8% in classifying MPs with different weathering degrees and polymer types, revealing polarization parameters associated with size and morphological changes play a dominant role in characterizing the weathering process of MPs. Compared with conventional approaches, the novel polarized light scattering approach holds great promise for rapid, high-throughput, and accurate characterization of MPs with small sizes. The findings of this study provided new insights into how MPs change after long-term weathering in aquatic environments.

Tire wear particles (TWPs) released during vehicle driving can enter water bodies, leading to leaching of tire additives (TAs) in aquatic environments. However, the transformation behavior and related ecological impacts of TAs and their transformation products (TPs) remain unclear. In this study, laboratory-based simulation experiments and field investigations were conducted to explore the transformation mechanisms and ecological risks of TAs. After being placed in river water for 24 h, about 7-95% of 12 investigated TAs in TWPs were leached. Forty-eight TPs from eight TAs were tentatively identified along with different transformation pathways via suspect screening by high-resolution mass spectrometry. Semiquantitative results indicated that TPs derived from N -(1,3-dimethylbutyl)- N '-phenyl- p -phenylene-diamine (6PPD) were predominant in leachates, while aryl hydrolysis and quinone pathways were the main transformation pathways. Field investigations on urban surface water samples from 16 sites in Hong Kong revealed the occurrence of 17 TAs and 1 TP, with concentrations ranging from 13.9 to 2230 ng/L (median ± standard deviation: 226 ± 534 ng/L). Sixteen TPs from six TAs were additionally identified via suspect screening. It is estimated that 6PPD-quinone and seven TAs could pose medium to high ecological risk, while N -(1,3-dimethylbutyl)- N '-phenyl- p -quinonediimine, a frequently detected TP, was identified as a persistent-bioaccumulative-toxic substance.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) as emerging environmental contaminants exacerbate the risk of spreading antibiotic resistance. Natural organic matter (NOM) is ubiquitous in aquatic environments and plays a crucial role in biogeochemical cycles. However, its impact on the dissemination of extracellular antibiotic resistance genes (eARGs) under sunlight exposure remains elusive. This study reveals that environmentally relevant levels of NOM (0.1-20 mg/L) can significantly enhance the natural transformation frequency of the model bacterium Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 by up to 7.6-fold under simulated sunlight. Similarly, this enhancement was consistently observed in natural water and wastewater systems. Further mechanism analysis revealed that reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by NOM under sunlight irradiation, primarily singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals, play a crucial role in this process. These ROS induce intracellular oxidative stress and elevated cellular membrane permeability, thereby indirectly boosting ATP production and enhancing cell competence of extracellular DNA uptake and integration. Our findings highlight a previously underestimated role of natural factors in the dissemination of eARGs within aquatic ecosystems and deepen our understanding of the complex interplay between NOM, sunlight, and microbes in environmental water bodies. This underscores the importance of developing comprehensive strategies to mitigate the spread of antibiotic resistance in aquatic environments.

Input of pollutants to estuaries is one of the major threats to marine biodiversity and fishery resources, and pharmaceuticals are one of the most important contaminants of emerging concern in aquatic ecosystems. To synthesize pharmaceutical pollution levels in estuaries over the past 20 years from a global perspective, this review identified 3229 individual environmental occurrence data for 239 pharmaceuticals across 91 global estuaries distributed in 26 countries. The highest cumulative weighted average concentration level (WACL) of all detected pharmaceuticals in estuarine water was observed in Africa (145,461.86 ng/L), with 30 pharmaceuticals reported. North America (24,316.39 ng/L) was ranked second in terms of WACL, followed by South America (20,784.13 ng/L), Asia (5958.38 ng/L), Europe (4691.23 ng/L), and Oceania (2916.32 ng/L). Carbamazepine, diclofenac, and paracetamol were detected in all continents. A total of 41 functional categories of pharmaceuticals were identified, and analgesics, antibiotics, and stimulants were amongst the most ubiquitous groups in estuaries worldwide. Although many pharmaceuticals were observed to present lower than or equal to moderate ecological risk, 34 pharmaceuticals were identified with high or very high ecological risks in at least one continent. Pharmaceutical pollution in estuaries was positively correlated with regional unemployment and poverty ratios, but negatively correlated with life expectancy and GDP per capita. Two-dimensional (2D) materials, as adsorbents, have garnered great attention in removing heavy metal ions (HMIs) from drinking water due to their extensive exposed adsorption sites. Nevertheless, there remains a paucity of experimental research to remarkably unlock their adsorption capabilities and fully elucidate their adsorption mechanisms. In this work, exceptional lead ion (Pb 2+ ) (a common HMI) removal capacity (up to 758 mg g -1 ) is achieved using our synthesized metallic 1T/1T' phase 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD, including MoS 2 , WS 2 , TaS 2 , and TiS 2 ) nanosheets, which hold tremendous activated S chemisorption sites. The residual Pb 2+ concentration can be reduced from 2 mg L -1 to 2 μg L -1 within 0.5 min, meeting the drinking water standards following World Health Organization guideline (Pb 2+ concentrations <10 μg L -1 ). Atomic-scale characterizations and calculations based on density functional theory unveil that Pb 2+ bond to the top positions of transition metal atoms in a single-atom form through the formation of S-Pb bonds. Point-of-use (POU) devices fabricated by our reported metallic phase MoS 2 nanosheets exhibit treatment capacity of 55 L-water g -1 -adsorbent for feed Pb 2+ concentration of 1 mg L -1 , which is 1-3 orders of magnitude higher than other 2D materials and commercial activated carbon., (© 2024. The massive production and application of nanomaterials (NMs) have raised concerns about the potential adverse effects of NMs on human health and the environment. Evaluating the adverse effects of NMs by laboratory methods is expensive, time-consuming, and often fails to keep pace with the invention of new materials. Therefore, in silico methods that utilize machine learning techniques to predict the toxicity potentials of NMs are a promising alternative approach if regulatory confidence in them can be enhanced. Previous reviews and regulatory OECD guidance documents have discussed in detail how to build an in silico predictive model for NMs. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement in addressing the ways to enhance the model representativeness and performance from different angles, such as data set curation, descriptor selection, task type (classification/regression), algorithm choice, and model evaluation (internal and external validation, applicability domain, and mechanistic interpretation, which is key to ensuring stakeholder confidence). This review explores how to build better predictive models; the current state of the art is analyzed via a statistical evaluation of literature, while the challenges faced and future perspectives are summarized. Moreover, a recommended workflow and best practices are provided to help in developing more predictive, reliable, and interpretable models that can assist risk assessment as well as safe-by-design development of NMs.

Currently, chemicals and waste are recognized as key drivers of habitat degradation and biodiversity loss in aquatic ecosystems. To ensure vibrant habitats for aquatic species and maintain a sustainable aquatic food supply system, Japan promulgated its Environmental Quality Standards for the Conservation of Aquatic Life (EQS-CAL), based on its own aquatic life water quality criteria (ALWQC) derivation method and application mechanism. Here we overview Japan's EQS-CAL framework and highlight their best practices by examining the framework systems and related policies. Key experiences from Japan's EQS-CAL system include: (1) Classifying six types of aquatic organisms according to their adaptability to habitat status; (2) Using a risk-based chemical screening system for three groups of chemical pollutants; (3) Recommending a five-step method for determining ALWQC values based on the most sensitive life stage of the most sensitive species; (4) Applying site-specific implementation mechanisms through a series of Plan-Do-Check-Act loops. This study provided a systematic investigation of microplastics in Hong Kong's surface marine waters during the pandemic from 2019 to 2021. Microplastics (2.07 ± 4.00 particles/m 3 ) exhibited significant temporal variations with higher abundance in the wet season, without a consistent trend after the mandatory mask-wearing requirement was announced. The impact of pandemic restrictions on microplastic distribution was found to be relatively minor. However, significant correlations between microplastic abundances and rainfall highlighted the substantial contribution of local emissions through surface runoff. Notably, sites in closer proximity to the Pearl River Delta exhibited higher microplastic abundances, indicating their association with emission sources. The influence of rainfall and adverse weather on marine microplastic loads demonstrated different sensitivities among various locations but can generally last for one month. Perfluoroethylcyclohexane sulfonate (PFECHS) is an emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance used to replace perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), mainly in aircraft hydraulic fluids. However, previous research indicates the potential neurotoxicity of this replacement chemical. In this study, marine medaka ( Oryzias melastigma ) was exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of PFECHS (concentrations: 0, 0.08, 0.26, and 0.91 μg/L) from the embryonic stage for 90 days. After exposure, the brain and eyes of the medaka were collected to investigate the bioconcentration potential of PFECHS stereoisomers and their effects on the nervous systems. The determined bioconcentration factors (BCFs) of PFECHS ranged from 324 ± 97 to 435 ± 89 L/kg and from 454 ± 60 to 576 ± 86 L/kg in the brain and eyes of medaka, respectively. The BCFs of trans -PFECHS were higher than those of cis -PFECHS. PFECHS exposure significantly altered γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in the medaka brain and disrupted the GABAergic system, as revealed by proteomics, implying that PFECHS can disturb neural signal transduction like PFOS. PFECHS exposure resulted in significant alterations in multiple proteins associated with eye function in medaka. Abnormal locomotion was observed in PFECHS-exposed medaka larvae, which was rescued by adding exogenous GABA, suggesting the involvement of disrupted GABA signaling pathways in PFECHS neurotoxicity.

Emerging aryl organophosphate esters (aryl-OPEs) have been employed as substitutes for organohalogen flame retardants in recent years; however, their environmental occurrence and associated impacts in urban estuarine sediments have not been adequately investigated, impeding regulatory decision-making. Herein, field-based investigations and modeling based on surface sediment and sediment core analysis were employed to uncover the historical pollution and current environmental impacts of aryl-OPEs in the Pearl River Estuary, South China. Our results revealed a substantial increase in aryl-OPE emission, particularly emerging aryl-OPEs, through sediment transport to the estuary since the 2000s. The emerging aryl-OPEs comprised 83% of the total annual input in the past decade, with an average annual input of 155,000 g. Additionally, the emerging-to-traditional aryl-OPE concentration ratios increased with decreasing distance from the shore, peaking in the highly urbanized riverine outlets. These findings indicate that inventories of emerging aryl-OPEs are likely increasing in estuarine sediments and their emissions are surpassing those of traditional aryl-OPEs. Our risk-based priority screening approach indicates that some emerging aryl-OPEs, particularly bisphenol A bis(diphenyl phosphate), can pose a higher environmental risk than traditional aryl-OPEs in estuarine sediments. Overall, our study highlights the importance of recognizing the environmental impacts of emerging aryl-OPEs.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic led to a sharp increase in disposable surgical mask usage. Discarded masks can release microplastic and cause environmental pollution. Since masks have become a daily necessity for protection against virus infections, it is necessary to review the usage and disposal of masks during the pandemic for future management. In this study, we constructed a dynamic model by introducing related parameters to estimate daily mask usage in 214 countries from January 22, 2020 to July 31, 2022. And we validated the accuracy of our model by establishing a dataset based on published survey data. Our results show that the cumulative mask usage has reached 800 billion worldwide, and the microplastics released from discarded masks due to mismanagement account for 3.27% of global marine microplastic emissions in this period. Furthermore, we illustrated the response relationship between mask usage and the infection rates. We found a marginally significant negative correlation existing between the mean daily per capita mask usage and the rate of cumulative confirmed cases within the range of 25% to 50%. The Pearl River Estuary (PRE), one of the primary e-waste recycling centers in the world, has been suffering from the pollution of Liquid Crystal Monomers (LCMs), critical materials with persistent, bio-accumulative, and toxic substances used in electronic devices. It has been detected in seabed sediment with both high frequency and concentration near PRE - Hong Kong (HK) waters. In the same area, dredging operations with in-situ sediment have been frequently used in the last decades for coastal land reclamation projects. Dredging is known to cause a huge amount of sediment re-suspension into water columns, with potential damage to marine ecosystems and biodiversity. In this study, we proposed a new risk assessment strategy to estimate the secondary pollution due to the re-suspension sediment highly contaminated by LCMs. We formulate a robust and reliable probabilistic approach based on unsupervised machine learning and hydrodynamic and sediment transport numerical simulation. New risk indexes were also proposed to better quantify the impact of contaminated sediments. We applied the methodology to assess the potential impact of dredging operations in the PRE and Hong Kong waters on the local marine ecosystem. Isochrysis galbana, a crucial primary producer and food source in aquatic ecosystems, faces increasing challenges from climate change and emerging contaminants like antibiotics. This study investigates the combined effects of sudden temperature increase (representing marine heatwaves) and rapid salinity change (representing extreme precipitation events) on the toxicity of tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) to I. galbana. Short-term experiments reveal heightened antibiotic toxicity at 31 °C or salinities of 18 PSU, surpassing algal tolerance limits. Long-term tests show decreased inhibition of algal growth on day 9, indicating algal adaptation to the environment. Analyses of photosynthesis II efficiency, pigment content, and macromolecular composition support this, suggesting adaptation mechanism activation. While algae acclimate to the environment during long-term antibiotic exposure, extreme weather conditions may compromise this adaptation. Organic ultraviolet filters (OUVFs) have been used globally for the past 20 years. Given that OUVFs can be quickly released from sunscreens applied on human skins, they have been frequently detected in aquatic environments and organisms. Some byproducts of OUVFs might be more recalcitrant and toxic than their parent compounds. To further assess the toxicity and potential risk of OUVFs' byproducts, it is necessary to determine the fate of OUVFs and identify their transformation products. This review summarizes and analyzes pertinent literature and reports in the field of OUVFs research. These published research works majorly focus on the degradation mechanisms of OUVFs in aquatic environments, their intermediates/byproducts, and chlorination reaction. Photodegradation (direct photolysis, self-sensitive photolysis and indirect photolysis) and biodegradation are the main transformation pathways of OUVFs through natural degradation. To remove residual OUVFs' pollutants from aqueous environments, novel physicochemical and biological approaches have been developed in recent years. Advanced oxidation, ultrasound, and bio-based technologies have been proven to eliminate OUVFs from wastewaters. In addition, the disinfection mechanism and the byproducts (DBPs) of various OUVFs in swimming pools are discussed in this review. In indoor environments, liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) released from display devices is a significant concern, necessitating a comprehensive investigation into their distribution behaviors and potential health risks. Herein, we examined various LCMs in educational and workplace air and compared their associated health risks through inhalation and dermal absorption routes. 4-propyl-4'-vinylbicyclohexyl (3VbcH) and 4,4'-bis(4-propylcyclohexyl) biphenyl (b3CHB) with median concentrations of 101 and 1460 pg m -3 , were the predominant LCMs in gaseous and particulate phases, respectively. Composition and concentration of LCMs differed substantially between sampling locations due to the discrepancy in the quantity, types, and brands of electronic devices in each location. Three models were further employed to estimate the gas-particle partitioning of LCMs and compared with the measured data. The results indicated that the HB model exhibited the best overall performance, while the LMY model provided a good fit for LCMs with higher log K oa (>12.48). Monte Carlo simulation was used to estimate and compared the probabilistic daily exposure dose and potential health risks. Inhalation exposure of LCMs was significantly greater than the dermal absorption by approximately 1-2 orders of magnitude, implying that it was the primary exposure route of human exposure to airborne LCMs. However, certain LCMs exhibited comparable or higher exposure levels via the dermal absorption route due to the significant overall permeability coefficient. Furthermore, the particle size was discovered to impact the daily exposure dose, contingent on the particle mass-transfer coefficients and accumulation of LCMs on diverse particle sizes. Although the probabilistic non-carcinogenic risks of LCMs were relatively low, their chronic effects on human beings merit further investigations. Assessing the impacts of cumulative anthropogenic disturbances on estuarine ecosystem health is challenging. Using spatially distributed sediments from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) in southern China, which are significantly influenced by anthropogenic activities, we demonstrated that metagenomics-based surveillance of benthic microbial communities is a robust approach to assess anthropogenic impacts on estuarine benthic ecosystems. Correlational and threshold analyses between microbial compositions and environmental conditions indicated that anthropogenic disturbances in the PRE sediments drove the taxonomic and functional variations in the benthic microbial communities. An ecological community threshold of anthropogenic disturbances was identified, which delineated the PRE sediments into two groups (H and L) with distinct taxa and functional traits. Group H, located nearshore and subjected to a higher level of anthropogenic disturbances, was enriched with pollutant degraders, putative human pathogens, fecal pollution indicators, and functional traits related to stress tolerance. In contrast, Group L, located offshore and subjected to a lower level of anthropogenic disturbances, was enriched with halotolerant and oligotrophic taxa and functional traits related to growth and resource acquisition. The machine learning random forest model identified a number of taxonomic and functional indicators that could differentiate PRE sediments between Groups H and L. The identified ecological community threshold and microbial indicators highlight the utility of metagenomics-based microbial surveillance in assessing the adverse impacts of anthropogenic disturbances in estuarine sediments, which can assist environmental management to better protect ecosystem health.

The persistence of extracellular antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquatic environments has attracted increasing attention due to their potential threat to public health and the environment. However, the fate of extracellular ARGs in receiving water remains largely unknown. This study investigated the influence of hematite nanoparticles, a widespread natural mineral, on the photodegradation of extracellular ARGs in river water. Results showed that under exposure to visible light, hematite nanoparticles, at environmental concentrations, resulted in a 3-5 orders of magnitude reduction in extracellular ARGs. This photodegradation of extracellular ARGs is shown to be facet-dependent; the (001) facet of hematite demonstrates a higher removal rate than that of the (100) facet, which is ascribed to its enhanced adsorption capability and higher hydroxyl radical ( • OH) production. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborate this finding, indicating elevated iron density, larger adsorption energy, and lower energy barrier of • OH formation on the (001) facet, providing more active sites and • OH generation for extracellular ARG interaction. Gel electrophoresis and atomic force microscopy analyses further confirm that the (001) facet causes more substantial damage to extracellular ARGs than the (100) facet. These findings pave the way for predicting the photodegradation efficiency of hematite nanoparticles with varied facets, thereby shedding light on the inherent self-purification capacity for extracellular ARGs in both natural and engineered aquatic environments.

Ocean stratification plays a crucial role in many biogeochemical processes of dissolved matter, but our understanding of its impact on widespread organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), remains limited. By analyzing dissolved PAHs collected from global oceans and marginal seas, we found different patterns in vertical distributions of PAHs in relation to ocean primary productivity and stratification index. Notably, a significant positive logarithmic relationship ( R 2 = 0.50, p < 0.05) was observed between the stratification index and the PAH stock. To further investigate the impact of ocean stratification on PAHs, we developed a deep learning neural network model. This model incorporated input variables determining the state of the seawater or the stock of PAHs. The modeled PAH stocks displayed substantial agreement with the observed values ( R 2 ≥ 0.92), suggesting that intensified stratification could prompt the accumulation of PAHs in the water column. Given the amplified effect of global warming, it is imperative to give more attention to increased ocean stratification and its impact on the environmental fate of organic pollutants.

Amphibians are sensitive biomonitors of environmental pollutants but reports regarding per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a class of synthetic organofluorine substances, are limited. In this study, samples of water and Chinese toads ( Bufo gargarizans ) were collected in Chaohu Lake, China. Tissue-specific bioaccumulation characteristics of 39 PFAS, including 19 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), 8 emerging PFAS, and 12 PFAA precursors, were investigated, and the levels of some biochemical indicators were determined. The highest PFAS concentrations were found in the liver [215.97 ng/g dry weight (dw)] of Chinese toads, followed by gonads (135.42 ng/g dw) and intestine (114.08 ng/g dw). A similar tissue distribution profile was found between legacy and emerging PFAS in the toads, and the occurrence of two emerging PFAS, 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoro-2-propanoate (HFPO-DA) and 6:2 hydrogen-substituted polyfluorooctane ether sulfonate (6:2 H-PFESA) in the amphibians were for the first time reported. Field-based bioaccumulation factors of HFPO-DA were higher than perfluorooctanoic acid, indicating the higher bioaccumulation potential of this emerging PFAS than the legacy C8 compound. Males had significantly higher gonad PFAS levels than females while estradiol levels in gonads increased with increasing concentrations of certain PFAS (e.g., 6:2 H-PFESA), implying that PFAS may trigger estrogenic effects in the toads, especially for male toads.

Growing application of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) in global market has led to the concern over their potential environmental impacts. Filter feeders like mussels are prone to nanoparticles due to their superior filter-feeding ability. Temperature and salinity of coastal and estuarine seawaters often vary seasonally and spatially, and their changes may jointly influence physicochemical properties of ZnO-NPs and thus their toxicity. This study, therefore, aimed to investigate the interactive effect of temperatures (15, 25 and 30 °C) and salinities (12 and 32 PSU) on physicochemical properties and sublethal toxicity of ZnO-NPs towards a marine mussel Xenostrobus securis, and to compare that with the toxicity caused by Zn 2+ ions (zinc sulphate heptahydrate). The results revealed increased particle agglomeration but decreased zinc ion release of ZnO-NPs at the highest temperature and salinity condition (30 °C and 32 PSU). After exposure, ZnO-NPs significantly reduced survival, byssal attachment rate and filtration rate of the mussels at high temperature and salinity (30 °C and 32 PSU). Glutathione S-transferase and superoxide dismutase activities in the mussels were suppressed at 30 °C. These aligned with the augmented zinc accumulation with increasing temperature and salinity which could likely be attributable to increased particle agglomeration of ZnO-NP and enhanced intrinsic filtration rate of the mussels under these conditions. Together with the observed lower toxic potency of Zn 2+ compared to ZnO-NPs, our results suggested that the mussels might accumulate more zinc through particle filtration under higher temperature and salinity, eventually resulting in elevated toxicity of ZnO-NPs. Halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) are a large class of chemical additives intended to meet flammability safety requirements, and at present, they are ubiquitous in the environment. Herein, we conducted the target analysis and suspect screening of legacy and novel HFRs and their metabolites in the blubber of finless porpoises ( Neophocaena phocaenoides ; n = 70) and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins ( Sousa chinensis ; n = 35) stranded in Hong Kong, a coastal city in the South China Sea, between 2013 and 2020. The average concentrations of total target HFRs (ΣHFRs) were 6.48 × 10 3 ± 1.01 × 10 4 and 1.40 × 10 4 ± 1.51 × 10 4 ng/g lipid weight in porpoises and dolphins, respectively. Significant decreasing temporal trends were observed in the concentrations of tetra-/penta-/ hexa -bromodiphenyl ethers (tetra-/penta-/hexa-BDEs) in adult porpoises stranded from 2013-2015 to 2016-2020 ( p < 0.05), probably because of their phasing out in China. No significant difference was found for the concentrations of decabromodiphenyl ether and hexabromocyclododecane, possibly due to their exemption from the ban in China until 2025 and 2021, respectively. Eight brominated compounds were additionally identified via suspect screening. A positive correlation was found between the concentrations of tetra-BDE and methyl-methoxy-tetra-BDE (Me-MeO-tetra-BDE) ( p < 0.05), indicating that the metabolism of tetra-BDE may be a potential source of Me-MeO-tetra-BDE in marine mammals.

The ban/elimination of legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has led to a dramatic increase in the production and use of various emerging PFASs over the past decade. However, trophodynamics of many emerging PFASs in aquatic food webs remain poorly understood. In this study, samples of seawaters and marine organisms including 15 fish species, 21 crustacean species, and two cetacean species were collected from the northern South China Sea (SCS) to investigate the trophic biomagnification potential of legacy and emerging PFASs. Bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide was found in seawater via suspect screening (concentration up to 1.50 ng/L) but not in the biota, indicating its negligible bioaccumulation potential. A chlorinated perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) analytical interfering compound was identified with a predicted formula of C 14 H 23 O 5 SCl 6 - (most abundant at m / z = 514.9373). Significant trophic magnification was observed for 22 PFASs, and the trophic magnification factors of cis - and trans -perfluoroethylcyclohexane sulfonate isomers (1.92 and 2.25, respectively) were reported for the first time. Perfluorohexanoic acid was trophic-magnified, possibly attributed to the PFAS precursor degradation. The hazard index of PFOS was close to 1, implying a potential human health risk via dietary exposure to PFASs in seafood on the premise of continuous PFAS discharge to the SCS.

Biochar-derived dissolved black carbon (DBC) molecules are dependent on the BC formation temperature and affect the fate of emerging contaminants in waters, such as polyvinyl chloride microplastic (MP PVC ). However, the temperature-dependent evolution and MP PVC -interaction of DBC molecules remain unclear. Herein, we propose a novel DBC-MP PVC interaction mechanism by systematically interpreting heterogeneous correlations, sequential responses, and synergistic relationships of thousands of molecules and their linking functional groups. Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy was proposed to combine Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and spectroscopic datasets. Increased temperature caused diverse DBC molecules and fluorophores, accompanied by molecular transformation from saturation/reduction to unsaturation/oxidation with high carbon oxidation states, especially for molecules with acidic functional groups. The temperature response of DBC molecules detected via negative-/positive-ion electrospray ionization sequentially occurred in unsaturated hydrocarbons → lignin-like → condensed aromatic → lipid-/aliphatic-/peptide-like → tannin-like → carbohydrate-like molecules. DBC molecular changes induced by temperature and MP PVC interaction were closely coordinated, with lignin-like molecules contributing the most to the interaction. Functional groups in DBC molecules with m / z < 500 showed a sequential MP PVC -interaction response of phenol/aromatic ether C-O, alkene C═C/amide C═O → polysaccharides C-O → alcohol/ether/carbohydrate C-O groups. These findings help to elucidate the critical role of DBCs in MP environmental behaviors.

Legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have elicited much concern because of their ubiquitous distribution in the environment and the potential hazards they pose to wildlife and human health. Although an increasing number of effective PFAS alternatives are available in the market, these alternatives bring new challenges. This paper comprehensively reviews how PFASs bind to transport proteins (e.g., serum albumin, liver fatty acid transport proteins and organic acid transporters), nuclear receptors (e.g., peroxisome proliferator activated receptors, thyroid hormone receptors and reproductive hormone receptors) and membranes (e.g., cell membrane and mitochondrial membrane). Briefly, the hydrophobic fluorinated carbon chains of PFASs occupy the binding cavities of the target proteins, and the acid groups of PFASs form hydrogen bonds with amino acid residues. Various structural features of PFAS alternatives such as chlorine atom substitution, oxygen atom insertion and a branched structure, introduce variations in their chain length and hydrophobicity, which potentially change the affinity of PFAS alternatives for endogenous proteins. The toxic effects and mechanisms of action of legacy PFASs can be demonstrated and compared with their alternatives using binding models. There is growing contamination of copper (Cu) in the marine environment, particularly after the ban of organotin compounds and the increase of the use of Cu-based antifouling paints. Although there are increasing research interests in temperature-dependent chemical toxicity to aquatic organisms, most existing studies focused on acute impacts of chemicals at high concentrations. This study aimed to investigate the interacting effect of temperature and copper exposure at environmentally relevant concentrations on survival and development in the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus with a partial life-cycle toxicity test. Expressions of five stress response genes in the copepod, namely two glutathione S-transferases (GST-S and GST-O), two heat shock proteins (HSP70 and HSP90), and glutathione reductase (GR) were also investigated. The copepod's survival was significantly impaired at 15 °C after development to adult stage, while its developmental time reduced significantly with increasing temperature. Copper at the two environmentally relevant test concentrations had no significant impacts on these apical endpoints whereas the interaction between Cu and temperature was more significant in modulating gene expressions. GST-S, GST-O and HSP90 genes in copepods exposed to 100 µg Cu L -1 were significantly upregulated at 20 °C. At 32 °C, most genes were either insignificantly expressed or down-regulated, compared to the control, likely suggesting that thermal stress inhibited the copepod's antioxidative defense system. Overall, the results revealed that the joint Cu and thermal stresses have significantly elicited antioxidative system in the copepods. It clearly demonstrated the need for more fundamental studies about potential impacts of different environmental factors such as temperature on chemical toxicity under realistic scenario of marine pollution., (© 2023. Organophosphate esters (OPEs), as flame retardants and plasticizers, have been numerously explored regarding the occurrence and ecotoxicology. Given their toxicity, persistency and bio-accumulative potential, however, they may pose negative effects on ecosystems, regarding which is a growing global concern. Accordingly, the present review systematically analyses the recent literature to (1) elucidate their worldwide distribution, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification potential, (2) determine their interim water quality criteria (i.e., effect thresholds), and (3) preliminarily assess the ecological risks for 32 OPEs in aquatic ecosystems. The results showed that the spatiotemporal distribution of OPEs was geographically specific and closely related to human activities (i.e., megacities), especially halogenated-OPEs. We also found that precipitation of airborne particulates could affect the concentrations of OPEs in soil, and there was a positive correlation between the bioaccumulation and hydrophobicity of OPEs. Tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate may exhibit high bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms. A substantial difference was found among interim water quality criteria for OPEs, partly attributable to the variation of their available toxicity data. Tris(phenyl) phosphate (TPHP) and tris(1,3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate with the lowest predicted no-effect concentration showed the strongest toxicity of growth and reproduction. Through the application of the risk quotient and joint probability curve, TPHP and tris(chloroethyl) phosphate tended to pose moderate risks, which should receive more attention for risk management. To better understand the formation process of biogenic and anthropogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOA and ASOA) in the marine atmosphere under the background of global warming, aerosol samples were collected over three summers (i.e., 2014, 2016 and 2018) from the Bering Sea (BS) to the western North Pacific (WNP). The results showed that temporally, atmospheric concentrations of isoprene-derived SOA (SOA I ) tracers were the lowest in 2014 regardless of the marine region, while atmospheric concentrations of monoterpenes-derived SOA (SOA M ) tracers in this year were the highest and the aerosols were more aged than those in the other two years. In comparison, the concentrations of β-caryophyllene-derived and toluene-derived SOA (SOA C and SOA A ) tracers were relatively low overall. Spatially, the concentrations of SOA tracers were significantly higher over the WNP than over the BS, with SOA tracers over the BS mainly coming from marine sources, while the WNP was strongly influenced by terrestrial inputs. In particular, for land-influenced samples from the WNP, NO x -channel products of SOA I were more dependent on O 3 and SO 2 relative to HO 2 -channel product, and the high atmospheric oxidation capacity and SO 2 could promote the formation of later-generation SOA M products. The extent of terrestrial influence was further quantified using a principal component analysis (PCA)-generalized additive model (GAM), which showed that terrestrial emissions explained more than half of the BSOA tracers' concentrations and contributed almost all of the ASOA tracer. In addition, the assessment of secondary organic carbon (SOC) highlighted the key role of anthropogenic activities in organic carbon levels in offshore areas. Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are widely detected in food and the human environment. More studies have begun to pay attention to the influence of MPs and NPs on genetics; in particular, exposure of paternal generation to MPs and NPs on epigenetic inheritance and the offspring of animal models have attracted considerable interest. In this Viewpoint, we mainly discuss the suggestion that reproductive genetic changes in the male parent have the potential to be transferred to the offspring and illustrate how MPs and NPs in the father tissues are distributed in later generations. We provide a systematic understanding of the potential health hazards of paternal exposure to MPs and NPs to subsequent generations and put forth recommendations about the epigenetic effects for future research on public health and food safety.

Biogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOA) are important components of the remote marine atmosphere. However, the response of BSOA changes to sea ice reduction over the Arctic Ocean remains unclear. Here we investigated isoprene and monoterpenes secondary organic aerosol (SOAI and SOAM) tracers in three years of summer aerosol samples collected from the Arctic Ocean atmosphere. The results indicated that methyltetrols were the most abundant SOAI tracers, while the main oxidation products of monoterpenes varied over the years owing to different aerosol aging. The results of the principal component analysis (PCA)-generalized additive model (GAM) combined with correlation analysis suggested that SOAI tracers were mainly generated by the oxidation of isoprene from marine emissions, while SOAM tracers were probably more influenced by terrestrial transport. Estimation of secondary organic carbon (SOC) indicated that monoterpenes oxidation contributed more than isoprene and that sea ice changes had a relatively small effect on biogenic SOC concentration levels. Our study quantified the contribution of influencing factors to the atmospheric concentration of BSOA tracers in the Arctic Ocean, and showed that there were differences in the sources of precursors for different BSOA. Atmospheric particulate matter, especially in urban and industrial environments, can act as a source of different organic pollutants that can pose significant health impacts to residents. However, the pollution status and transport mechanisms of fine particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in indoor and outdoor environments are uncertain. This study aimed to determine the spatial distribution and morphological characteristics of fine particle-bound PAHs and analyze the factors (source contributions and backward trajectories) that influence their concentrations. The results showed that mean concentrations of 16 PAHs were higher in indoor dust as compared to outdoor dust. In addition, the lowest concentrations of the 16 PAHs were found on the 11-20th floor, with smoking households > nonsmoking households (except Nap, Acy, and Ace). The 2-3 ring PAHs were more prominent in households with cooking activities. The particle size distribution showed that most of the particles were <62 μm in diameter, indicating that the indoor particles were smaller in size. Furthermore, the range of δ13C values in the outdoor dust (-30.17 ~ -28.63 ‰) samples was significantly lower than in indoor dust (-28.29 ~ -22.53 ‰). The results based on diagnostic ratios, positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis and backward trajectory model analysis suggested that the sources of PAHs in indoor and outdoor dust were mixed, originated both locally and from neighboring provinces transported over long distances, especially concentrated in the Yangtze River Delta area. Finally, carcinogenic risk values for indoor dust were greater than those for outdoor dust. Emerging contaminants such as nanoplastics and nanoparticles likely experience similar environmental behaviours, fate and effects but our knowledge of their combined toxicity is scanty. This study, therefore, investigated the joint toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics (PNPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) to an ecologically important rotifer Brachionus koreanus, and compared with the joint toxicity of PNPs and Zn ions (Zn-IONs from ZnSO 4 ·7H 2 O). With increasing concentration, ZnO-NPs formed significant agglomeration with PNPs for up to 1.3 times of the original hydrodynamic size of ZnO-NPs, alongside doubling in their sedimentation and thereby losing 58% of their released Zn ions. In contrast, the availability of Zn-IONs was less affected by the agglomeration and sedimentation of PNPs, with only a loss of 18% of Zn ions at the highest concentration of PNPs. Consequently, as suggested by Concentration Addition and Independent Action models and the Model Deviation Ratios, ZnO-NPs and PNPs exerted an antagonistic interaction whereas Zn-IONs and PNPs exhibited an additive effect. We also advocate the use of the Nonparametric Response Surface method, which is more useful to predict the toxicity of chemical mixtures with interacting effects. Our findings suggested a potential difference between particle-particle and particle-ion interactions, especially at higher test concentrations, which may eventually affect their toxicity. Phthalate esters (PAEs) are representative additives used extensively in plastics. In this study, 15 PAEs were investigated at the eight riverine outlets of the Pearl River Delta (PRD). The total concentrations of Σ 15 PAEs, including both the dissolved and particulate phases, ranged from 562 to 1460 ng/L and 679 ng/L-2830 ng/L in the surface and bottom layers, respectively. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) dominated in the dissolved and suspended particulate matter (SPM) phases, respectively, accounting for >50 % and > 80 % of Σ 15 PAEs. Riverine input of wastewater from the PRD was possibly the primary source of the contamination. Higher levels of PAEs occurred at the eastern outlets than at the western ones. The dissolved and particulate PAEs varied seasonally, with significantly higher concentrations observed in the dry season than in the wet season. However, no significant differences of PAE levels in both phases were observed among low, medium, and high tides. The partitioning results demonstrated that SPM is important in the transportation of pollutants in estuaries, where more hydrophobic DEHP was predominantly transported by the SPM phase, while those more hydrophilic ones were regularly transported by the dissolved phase. Most organophosphate esters (OPEs) enter the marine environment through atmospheric deposition and surface runoff, yet the role of particle-mediated transport in their inputs and loss processes remains poorly understood. To fill this knowledge gap, samples of size-segregated atmospheric particles, suspended particulate matter (SPM) in seawater, and sediments in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) were collected and analyzed for OPEs. Total concentrations of atmospheric particulate OPEs showed a decreasing trend with increasing offshore distance in the PRE. The spatial and vertical distribution patterns of OPEs in SPM were diverse, which could be largely affected by physicochemical properties of SPM, marine microbial activities, hydrodynamic conditions, and environmental factors. Sediment in the region close to Modaomen outlet was subject to relatively high OPE concentrations. Approximately 24,100 and 65,100 g d - 1 of particulate OPEs were imported into the PRE through atmospheric deposition and surface runoff, respectively; 83,200 g d - 1 of which were exported to the open sea. The input and environmental fate of particulate OPEs were found to be dependent on sources, particulate media, and chemical species. Transformation of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in natural ambient air and potential health risks from coexposure to OPEs and their transformation products are largely unclear. Therefore, a novel framework combining field-based investigation, in silico prediction, and target and suspect screening was employed to understand atmospheric persistence and health impacts of OPEs. Alkyl-OPE transformation products ubiquitously occurred in urban ambient air. The transformation ratios of tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate were size-dependent, implying that transformation processes may be affected by particle size. Transformation products of chlorinated- and aryl-OPEs were not detected in atmospheric particles, and atmospheric dry deposition might significantly contribute to their removal. Although inhalation risk of coexposure to OPEs and transformation products in urban ambient air was low, health risks related to OPEs may be underestimated as constrained by the identification of plausible transformation products and their toxicity testing in vitro or in vivo at current stage. The present study highlights the significant impact of particle size on the atmospheric persistence of OPEs and suggests that health risk assessments should be conducted with concurrent consideration of both parental compounds and transformation products of OPEs, in view of the nonnegligible abundances of transformation products in the air and their potential toxicity in silico .
