5. Do Political Connections Help or Harm Family Firms? An Audit Pricing Perspective.

Abstract

Past business ethics research highlights negative perceptions about corporate governance of family firms, and yet many auditors evaluate family businesses favorably and charge them lower audit fees; however, this inconsistency remains unexplained. Moreover, the impact of family firms' political connections and board gender diversity on audit fees is still not clear. Based on the data from listed Chinese family firms, we address these important research gaps by using the local institutional environment in which the client operates as a moderator of the process by which auditors assess the implications of clients' political connections. Political connections reduce audit fees when a client is located in a region with high-quality public administration. Female representation in audit committees positively moderates the relationship between political connections and audit fees, as female committee members react to their firms' political connections by demanding higher levels of assurance from auditors. Abstract

Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions' effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior-several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people's initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors.

10. Entrepreneurship education and established business activities: An international perspective

Abstract

This paper introduces a conceptual model with perceived opportunity and perceived capability as mediators in the process by which entrepreneurship education helps improve the established business activities. Specifically, we hypothesize that the prevalence of entrepreneurship education relates positively with the rate of established business activity, and that perceived opportunity and capability mediate this relationship. We find support for all our hypotheses using Poisson regression with the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor data collected from 826 participants across 107 countries during the 2001–2018 period. Our findings confirm that entrepreneurship education has a significant positive impact on the performance of established businesses by helping the entrepreneurs improve their perceived capabilities and opportunities. These findings extend the current research on the impact of entrepreneurship education on entrepreneurial activities at different stages of development for entrepreneurial businesses.

11. Using gamification to create brand love in online retailing: Brand engagement and value co-creation perspective

Abstract

Gamification has emerged as a popular approach to use a virtual platform in combination with social media and other emerging digital platforms to enhance brand engagement. We investigate the focal roles of co-creation and brand love in the impact of brand engagement on brand loyalty and advocacy in a gamified online retailing platform. We use a multi-method approach with two consumer surveys (Gen Y=389 and Gen Z= 496) and a sentiment analysis of user-generated content with tweets about gamification in the context of online retailing. Results confirm a positive link for social and emotional (but not cognitive) brand engagement with value co-creation. Brand love is positively associated with both brand advocacy and loyalty. Finally, brand trust fully moderates the relationship between value co-creation and brand love. Besides adding to the current research on brand love, gamification, and consumer brand engagement, these findings also provide useful insights to online retailers for using gamification to drive their customer engagement and value co-creation efforts to create brand love that in turn would lead to customer loyalty and advocacy.

Abstract

This paper introduces a new conceptual model to examine the impact of technological opportunism (technology sensing and response capabilities) on the adoption of incremental and radical technological innovation by small and medium enterprises (SMEs). We tested our hypotheses with data from 228 Indian SMEs using a symmetric method of partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and the asymmetric method of fuzzy–set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) followed by sensitivity analysis done by an artificial neural network (ANN) modeling. PLS-SEM results highlighted the roles of technology sensing and response capabilities as key drivers of both incremental and radical product innovations and the strengthening of these relationships by market uncertainty triggered by external events and crises. Apart from this, the results of fsQCA demonstrated multiple configurations of dimensions associated with the adoption of technological innovations by SMEs. This paper extends the current literature by exploring the process by which SMEs may adopt different types of technological innovation. Our findings also have useful implications for SMEs aiming to adopt technological innovations.

17. Impact of relative compensation to executive directors with marketing experience on marketing performance: Toward an integrative framework

Abstract

Purpose – This paper combines the agency theory and efficiency wage theory to explore the effects of relative compensation for executive directors with marketing experience on two marketing outcomes (marketing efficiency and market share) and the moderating roles of ownership type (private vs. state-owned enterprises) and market concentration in this process. Methodology – 2,753 firm-year observations from Chinese listed companies (from 2010 to 2014) were retrieved from China Stock Market and Accounting Research (CSMAR) database and analysed using firm random-effects with industry, year, and region fixed effects. Findings – Relative compensation has a positive effect on both marketing efficiency and market share, and these effects are moderated by ownership type and market concentration. Specifically, the positive effect of relative compensation on marketing efficiency and market share are stronger for central state-owned enterprises (SOEs) compared to local SOEs and private-owned enterprises (POEs) but the results are mixed for market concentration. Research limitations/implications – This study shows that paying higher compensation to the executive directors with marketing experience can enhance marketing performance, but the data does not allow identification of the actual actions taken by these directors for this. Practical implications: This study highlights the importance of appropriate compensation for directors with marketing experience to motivate them to make better marketing decisions to overcome the challenges posed by market concentration and agency conflicts. Originality/value – This paper point outs the importance of having directors with marketing experience and paying them suitable compensation to motivate them to be more effective.

18. Co-Creating Innovative Tourist Experiences: Towards an Integrative Framework

Abstract

Co-creating tourist experiences helps create value for the tourists resulting from their interactions with tourism service providers and the physical environment. However, the practices and procedures that drive the co-creation of innovative tourist experiences are still not clear. We address this research gap by combining the resource-based view (RBV) and service-dominant (S-D) logic to develop specific hypotheses about the mediating role of value co-creation in the process by which internal and external resource orientations impact radical and incremental innovations, which in turn influence tourist experience and outcomes (brand advocacy and revisit intentions). We find support for most of our hypotheses using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze data from matching samples of 191 tourists and managers in tourism provider firms in India. Specifically, external (but not internal) resource orientation positively affects both incremental and radical innovations, which in turn positively impact tourist experience, brand advocacy and revisit intentions. Finally, value co-creation fully mediates the positive effect of internal (but not external) resource orientation on both incremental and radical innovations. These findings would help tourism providers design co-creative and innovative tourism strategies to manage and improve tourist experiences as well as their brand advocacy and revisit intentions.

19. Dark side of business-to-business (B2B) relationships

Despite growing research on the dark side of B2B relationships in the last two decades, there are still many gaps in this literature, which need to be addressed to provide a more complete understanding of the various dark side phenomena and the associated processes. This special issue addresses this need with 27 articles (including five invited articles), classified along seven distinct themes, including a) relationship characteristics and behaviors, b) process-view of dark side, c) coopetition and co-creation, d) channel partners and suppliers, e) internationalization and governance, f) certification and governance in finance sector, and g) role of emerging technologies. We begin this editorial by reviewing the dark side of B2B relationships literature to identify specific research gaps. Next, we describe the 27 articles and their findings, classified under the seven themes. Finally, we discuss their contributions and implications with some useful directions for future research on this important topic.

24. Differences in the impact of R&D intensity and R&D internationalization on firm performance – Mediating role of innovation performance

Abstract

This paper investigates the mediating role of innovation performance in the effects of R&D intensity and R&D internationalization on firm performance, using 1540 firm-year observations from a balanced panel of 385 privately-owned firms listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges. Results show a negative effect of R&D intensity on short-term (profitability) and positive effect on long-term (firm value) financial performance but no significant effect on export (sales) performance. In contrast, R&D internationalization has a positive effect on export performance but no significant effect on short- or long-term financial performance. Moreover, innovation performance (number of patents) partially mediates the impact of R&D intensity and R&D internationalization on firm performance and these effects vary based on firm age and size. Besides extending current literature on R&D investments, these results have useful implications for firms especially those from emerging markets with international R&D operations or those aiming to internationalize their R&D activities.

25. Demystifying the dark side of board political capital

Abstract

Politically-connected directors help firms build ‘board political capital’ that may give them preferential access to benefits but it could also make them indulge in corrupt activities that in turn could lead to regulatory enforcement by authorities. However, it is still not clear which attributes of board political capital may expose firms to such negative outcomes. We address this gap by using an overarching dark side perspective of board political capital to hypothesize that regional (vs. central) board political capital, proportion of male (vs. female) politically-connected directors and perk consumption have positive effects on the incidence of regulatory enforcement. We also hypothesize that proximity to the regulatory authorities has a negative effect on regulatory enforcement and it negatively moderates the link between board political capital and regulatory enforcement. Data on 762 pairs of publicly listed Chinese firms supports most of the hypotheses. We discuss the theoretical and managerial implications of these results.

27. Belt and Road Sentiment Index

Abstract

The Chinese government has launched the Belt and Road Initiative (B&RI), targeting to establish a foreign policy scheme that facilitates infrastructure and economic development through cooperation and risk avoidance. To date, 123 countries have participated in the B&R Initiative (Zhu, 2019). These countries, together, constitute two-third of world population and one-third of global GDP. Since the implementation of B&RI, the public’s sentiment is mixed due to participating countries’ stakeholders are uncertain if unsure B&RI would benefit or disadvantage their own / countries’ interests. B&R partner countries and companies when faced with information uncertainties can retort to the use of a proposed Belt and Road Sentiment Index to achieve information symmetry. This study aims at conceptualizing the B&R sentiment construct as well as a B&R Sentiment Index to improve the information symmetry about B&R initiative among the partner countries. With enhanced information symmetry, with trustworthy information among the stakeholders, the sentiment index could be used as a tool for B&R partner countries to be prepared to enter into long-term trade relationships with China. This project can also assist the public and the media to report and disseminate information about B&RI. With enhanced public awareness, it allows the fourth estate to access information and improves the public knowledge of the myths of B&RI.

28. Internationalisation of R&D activities: A boon or bane?

Abstract

We address this important research gap by comparing the impact of R&D investments and international R&D presence on both short and long term firm performance with particular attention on the firms’ export performance, while controlling for a wide range of variables, including firm size, industry type, level of patenting activity etc. We argue that R&D investment would have a stronger positive effect on the long-term (vs. short-term) firm performance and no significant effect on export performance. We also hypothesize that international R&D presence would have a significant stronger positive effect on export performance than on short and longterm firm performance. Using 1,540 firm-year observations from a balanced panel of 385 privately-owned firms in a patent-intensive industry, listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges, we find support for all our hypotheses. Specifically, R&D investment has a negative effect on short-term performance (profitability), a positive effect on long-term performance (firm value) and no significant effect on export performance. In contrast, international R&D presence has a significantly stronger positive effect on export performance than on short-term and longterm firm performance. We discuss the conceptual contribution and managerial implications of our findings along with their limitations and some useful directions for future research.

29. Gender equity and public health outcomes: The COVID-19 experience

Abstract

This paper extends the growing research on the impact of gender equity on public health outcomes using the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic as its research setting. Specifically, it introduces a conceptual model incorporating the impact of gender equity and human development on women’s representation in legislature and public health expenditure, and their combined impact with human environment (population density, aging population and urban population) on important public health outcomes in the Covid-19 context, including the total number of tests, diagnosed, active and critical cases, and deaths. Data from 210 countries shows support for many of the hypothesized relationships in the conceptual model. The results provide useful insights about the factors that influence the representation of women in political systems around the world and its impact on public health outcomes. The authors also discuss implications for public health policy-makers to ensure efficient and effective delivery of public health services in future.

Despite the perennial need to understand and manage uncertainty in international business, there is no comprehensive framework that incorporates different types of uncertainty, their antecedents and outcomes, and the different coping strategies used by managers and their outcomes. This makes it difficult for international business managers to understand the types of uncertainty in their businesses and develop appropriate strategies to deal with it effectively, especially during times such as the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. This paper uses an extensive review of the international business literature to address the above research gap by identifying the different types of uncertainty, their antecedents and outcomes, the coping strategies used to mitigate their impact, and the consequences of these actions. The authors also use examples from the current Covid-19 crisis to assess the firms’ responses and their consequences. The paper concludes with some implications for international business managers and directions for future research.

China’s Belt & Road Initiative (BRI) is an ambitious global infrastructure development strategy that covers 152 countries around the world. Despite strong support from the Chinese government, public response to BRI has been quite mixed in Europe, because people are still not sure about how this would benefit or harm their individual and national interests. We address this uncertainty about the potential outcomes of BRI by exploring how it is perceived by the managers working in professional services firms in the partner countries in Europe. We also introduce a new construct, ‘BRI-Readiness’, the ability of managers and organizations to face the challenges and tap the opportunities offered by BRI. We also plan to develop a scale to operationalize BRI-Readiness. Finally, we explore the impact of psychic distance (in terms of their cultural values and business practices) and cultural familiarity on the acceptance of BRI by the managers in professional services firms in Europe.

32. Demystifying the Impact of Marketing Decisions on Market Share and Firm Value - A Chain-of-effects Perspective

Abstract

This paper uses the ‘chain-of-effects’ framework for marketing productivity and agency theory to explore the underlying mechanism that drives the effects of marketing decisions (measured by marketing expenses and relative compensation for executive directors with marketing experience) on firm value (Tobin’s Q) via firm performance (market share). Data from 491 Chinese listed companies over the 2010-14 period shows that marketing expenditure positively affects firm value but not through market share. In contrast, relative compensation positively affects firm value, both directly and through market share. Moreover, the positive effect of relative compensation on market share appears to be stronger in an organization with more severe agency conflicts. Besides extending current research on the effects of marketing decisions on financial outcomes, these results highlight the importance of having executive directors with marketing experience to increase firm value.

The results indicate that Chinese public investors prefer stock dividends over cash dividends, which are preferred by large state and legal person shareholders generally. Stock dividends, which do not require an explicit cash outflow from a firm, are found to be positively related to higher earnings, supporting the signalling hypothesis of dividend policy. In an imperfect market, these results have some implications for government regulation of financial markets. The 2018 Report to the Nations on Occupational Fraud and Abuse finds the loss caused by fraud was more than US$7.1 billion. Although there is no magic and instant recipe in dealing with corruption, there has been a global call for developing solutions to fight the corruption problem. In the past decade, maintaining good corporate governance is one of the recommended answers to address the corruption problem by reforming the business climate to be more transparent and providing more investor protection. This study examines the drivers of corruption from the legal, political, and cultural perspectives as well as the effectiveness of several governance mechanisms in combating corruption. In particular, we focus on the impacts of political connectedness as the cause and solution of the corruption problem. This research highlights the growing trend of appointing politically-connected directors as corporate political strategy. The resource dependence theory suggests the importance of board political capital as it provides the connected firms with preferential access to different benefits. We formulate theory on both the dark side and bright side of political connectedness that have distinct impacts on the incidence of regulatory enforcements. First, we hypothesize the politically-connected firms are more likely to face regulatory sanctions than their unconnected peers. Next, we posit the politician-directors can use their central political connectedness to buffer the disciplinary pressure from the regulatory body. Third, based on the propositions of ethicality, risk aversion, and diversity, we advance the view that female politician-directors are effective monitors for preventing their connected firms from committing corruption. Finally, we argue that the formal system of government supervision and the informal institutional arrangement of subnational culture can also be governance measures

Abstract

We formulate theory on the effect of board of director gender diversity on the broad spectrum of securities fraud, and generate three key insights. First, based on ethicality, risk aversion, and diversity, we hypothesize that gender diversity on boards can operate as a significant moderator for the frequency of fraud. Second, we advance that the stock market response to fraud from a more gender-diverse board is significantly less pronounced. Third, we posit that women are more effective in male-dominated industries in reducing both the frequency and severity of fraud. Results of our novel empirical tests, based on data from a large sample of Chinese firms that committed securities fraud, are largely consistent with each of these hypotheses.

Abstract

In this study, we examine the impact of relative pay (manager pay divided by average worker pay) on a firm's productivity. Using data from a major transitional economy, China, we find that relative pay is negatively associated with high productivity. Our results provide support for the view that workers are alienated when their incomes are far lower than that of top management and this leads to lower productivity. This effect is most pronounced in labor intensive firms.

Abstract

Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions’ effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior—several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people’s initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors.
