10. Free‐Standing Janus Nanosheets: Ultrafast Self‐Assembly and Versatile Biphase‐Application.

Abstract

The development of stable Janus architectures suitable for biphasic applications holds significant importance. A novel approach is introduced for interfacial supramolecular self‐assembly, resulting in 2D Janus nanosheets (OA‐TA/Fe) exhibiting an amphiphilic nature. These nanosheets consist of hydrophilic coordination complexes of ferric ions (Fe3+) and tannic acid (TA) on one side of both surfaces and hydrophobic alkyl chains on the other side of both surfaces. The synthesis of these 2D Janus nanosheets involves a simple, ultrafast, and environmentally benign process, eliminating the need for time‐consuming multistep procedures and harsh synthetic conditions typically associated with Janus architecture formation. By exploiting the inherent singular anisotropic wettability inherent in OA‐TA/Fe‐2, the efficacy of these innovative Janus nanosheets in the efficient separation of various organic liquid‐in‐water and water‐in‐organic liquid emulsions is elucidated. Subsequent post‐modification of OA‐TA/Fe has facilitated the highly efficient remediation of contaminated oily wastewater, serving as a model biphasic catalysis reaction, wherein the Janus nanosheets function simultaneously as emulsifiers and catalysts within biphasic mixtures. The methodology establishes a rapid self‐assembly approach for the creation of amphiphilic free‐standing Janus nanosheets, offering compelling prospects for their application in diverse fields, as exemplified by, but not limited to, the case studies presented herein. Abstract

Resisting extreme loading and thermal ablation encountered by aerospace devices demands for high performance engineering materials. Aerogels have achieved satisfactory thermal insulation but the intrinsic brittleness of porous skeletons fail to ensure their normal operation under severe stress fields. Herein, aramid nanofibers (ANFs) are processed into tough 3D aerogel monoliths via a multi‐scale toughening strategy, involving unidirectional freeze‐casting‐enabled microstructure orientation and acid‐assisted nanofiber cross‐linking. Scalable production of ANFs aerogels is realized through fast air‐drying without excessive energy consumption. The aligned sheets in ANFs aerogels enable extreme thermal conductivity of 15.8 mW m−1 K−1, superinsulation from −130 to 300 °C, and durable combustion protection for 20 min. Particularly, highly aggregated nanofibers assemble into dense ANFs skeletons, endowing the tough aerogels with superior specific tensile strength (89 MPa cm3 g−1), ultra‐high toughness (1.3 MJ m−3), and impressive fracture energy (7.36 kJ m−2). Such mechanical properties are highly resistant to harsh environments, including water erosion (7 days) and high temperature baking (30 days). Moreover, ANFs aerogels exhibit two to three times more energy dissipation than commercial foams against ballistic impact at 140 m s−1. Abstract

The global health crisis of bacterial resistance to antibiotics requires innovative antibacterial strategies. One promising solution is the exploitation of multifunctional nanoplatforms based on non-resistant antibacterial mechanisms. This work reports a novel Fe3O4@Au/polydopamine (PDA) nanodurian with excellent photothermal-magnetomechanic synergistic antibacterial effects. The one-step formed Au/PDA hybrid shell provides good photothermal properties and spiky surfaces for enhanced magnetomechanic effects. Upon near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the Fe3O4@Au/PDA nanodurian (200 μg mL−1) achieved nearly 100% antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The efficiency of photothermal antimicrobial activity was further enhanced by the application of a rotating magnetic field (RMF), with the sterilization efficiency being increased by up to more than a half compared to the action alone. Interestingly, the size of the nanodurian has a significant impact on the synergistic sterilization effect, with larger particles showing a superior performance due to stronger chain-like structures in the magnetic field. Finally, the Fe3O4@Au/PDA nanodurian also demonstrates effective biofilm removal, with larger particles exhibiting the best eradication effect under the photothermal-magnetomechanic treatment. Overall, this magnetic field enhanced photothermal antibacterial strategy provides a promising broad-spectrum antimicrobial solution to combat bacterial infections. 23. Anisotropic α‑Fe2O3/AgAu/Polydopamine Nanostructures for Photothermally Enhanced Antibacterial Applications.

Abstract

Multifunctional photothermal nanomaterials offer notable opportunities for antimicrobial therapy due to their excellent antibacterial activities without leading to drug resistance. Herein, we report a facile one-step strategy for fabricating anisotropic corn-like α-Fe2O3/AgAu/polydopamine (PDA) nanospindles with photothermally enhanced antibacterial performance. The AgAu bimetallic nanocrystals sandwiched between the α-Fe2O3 core and the PDA shell are achieved by simultaneous reduction from AgNO3 and HAuCl4 during the oxidative polymerization of dopamine and galvanic replacement reaction between the obtained Ag nanocrystals and Au precursor. The inner nanostructure and atom ratio of AgAu bimetallic nanocrystals can be modulated by varying the experimental parameter, thus further controlling the photothermal activities. In comparison to α-Fe2O3/Au/PDA, Fe2O3/Ag1.7Au0.8/PDA (50 μg/mL) has a better photothermal conversion effect (60.69%). Moreover, the α-Fe2O3/Ag1.7Au0.8/PDA nanospindle exhibits moderate antibacterial activity, which may be derived from Ag+ release. Under application of near-infrared light irradiation, the corn-like α-Fe2O3/Ag1.7Au0.8/PDA nanospindles (50 μg/mL) exhibit a photothermally enhanced sterilization effect against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus (99.99%). This "Ag+ release–photothermal" coupling sterilization method provides a simple synergistic antimicrobial therapy strategy, which possesses great promise for future nanomedicine against bacteria in water treatment. A BODIPY-based fluorescent sensor PS with an NO4S2 podand ligand was studied for the selective detection of Pt2+ over 21 cations as well as selected platinum drugs in aqueous medium. The platinum sensor PS shows 28-fold, 22-fold and 14-fold fluorescence turn-on enhancements to Pt2+, cisplatin and nedaplatin, and was thereby employed to detect platinum drugs in A-549 human lung cancer cells.
