A high-isolation eight-way power combiner is proposed in this article that is constructed by cascading three stages of power combiners in series. Its high isolation and low return loss are realized by means of lumped isolators, an isolated side network, and a resistive septum. The eight-way power combiner is basically a 17-port mode network, consisting of eight input ports, eight matching ports, and one output port. The mode network matrix cascade computation clearly reveals the working mechanism. Based on the designed 17-port network, an eight-way power combiner is realized with eight matching ports connected to loads. The measurements agree well with the simulations. From 7.8 to 10.2 GHz, the return loss at the input ports is greater than 19 dB, the return loss at the output port is greater than 18 dB, the isolation is at least 19 dB, and the insertion loss is less than 0.4 dB. The proposed eight-way power combiner has the merits of high isolation, low return loss, low insertion loss, high power capacity, and ease of integration, with great potential for integration into high-power amplifiers.

In this article, a vertical four-way rectangular waveguide to microstrip power divider is proposed. The power divider achieves perfect power division from 10.1 to 11 GHz with a 20-dB return loss and a short longitudinal length. Based on the four-way power divider, two microstrip ports are added, and a compact improved four-way rectangular waveguide to microstrip power divider is constructed. The 20-dB return loss bandwidth of the power divider can be extended from 9.9 to 12.4 GHz. If all the output microstrip ports are connected to resistive loads, the power dividers become rectangular matching terminations. Thus, the four-way power divider can achieve a rectangular matching load with an 8% bandwidth and a 2-mm matching length. The improved four-way power divider can achieve a rectangular matching load with a 22.4% bandwidth and a 2.5-mm matching length. The measurements agree well with the simulations. The proposed designs of the rectangular loads are superior in their compact volume, high power capacity, and ease of fabrication.

A compact $E$ -plane four-port junction circulator is proposed in this letter. It consists of an X-shape waveguide junction, two X-shape ferrite disks with fillets, and several matching metal posts. Based on the combinations of the TM210 and degenerate TM±110 modes, a four-port gyromagnetic resonator is realized. By introducing the tuning elements, the bandwidth is improved. Measurements show that from 8 to 9 GHz, the return loss is better than 18 dB, the isolation is better than 17 dB, and the insertion loss is 0.3–0.6 dB. Measurements agree well with the simulations. Its cross-sectional size is less than $0.86\lambda \times 0.72\lambda $ at 8.5 GHz. High-power test shows that its pulsed power capacity is no less than 28 kW.

A four-way power combiner with small cross-sectional size and high power capacity is investigated in this study. The design is based on the cascaded structure of three rectangular hybrid rings and one coaxial-to-waveguide transition. The combiner consists of coaxial and waveguide structures to ensure high power capacity. The compact cross-sectional size (0.71 λ × 0.74 λ at the centre frequency) is achieved by employing transverse electric magnetic (TEM)-mode coaxial line structures. A prototype power combiner is fabricated and tested to verify the design results. It has been demonstrated that the proposed power combiner has a power capacity of 16 kW. The return loss is better than 25 dB, isolation degree higher than 27 dB, and amplitude imbalance within 0.16 dB limits in the operating band 8–9 GHz, validated with both simulations and experiments. The proposed structure is suitable for kW-level power combining and it can also be implemented in planar forms for a wider range of applications.

This paper presents a compact ridge waveguide four-port junction circulator. It adopts a parallel configuration topology of two 3-port ridge waveguide junction circulators connected with a compact ridge waveguide to coaxial transition. The compactness of the circulator are realized by selection of ridge waveguide transmission line, utilization of parallel configuration topology structure and compact transition form. Low-power and high-power test results demonstrate that this circulator realizes a 17 dB isolation and 24 dB return loss bandwidth of 11.8% with an insertion loss of 0.2-0.4 dB. Its peak power capacity can reach 8 kW.

In this paper, we present an overmoded coaxial waveguide diplexer at X/Ku band for high power microwaves. The design details and diplexing mechanism have been investigated. An overmoded filter based on coaxial corrugated waveguide is proposed as a band pass filter, which operates at TEM mode. To suppress excited TMon modes and keep fundamental TEM mode, the filter is optimized and designed. The designed filter possesses a transmission efficiency over 99% from 9.23GHz to 9.47GHz, while reflection efficiency is over 99% from 9.35GHz to 9.65GHz. A concentric waveguide with 22 coupling holes is designed as an injection structure to diplex Ku band microwaves to the overmoded coaxial waveguide and at the same time stop the X band microwaves. Hence, the diplexing manifold can combine X band and Ku band microwaves into the common waveguide. According to the simulation results, the power handling capacity of the designed diplexer is at giga-watt level, and its transmission efficiency is over 99%.

The design and optimization of a high-power filter based on the Bragg reflector is presented in this paper. Theoretical analysis of the aperiodic Bragg reflector reveals that, by replacing the periodic cylindrically symmetric corrugations (CSCs) into random ones, required filtering performance may be realized in a designated frequency band. An improved optimization strategy based on covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES) is introduced to optimize CSCs for the filter design. Besides, in order to maximize the power capacity and maintain the designed accuracy, the chamfering technique is presented and integrated into the optimization. An optimized geometry, which respectively exhibit the band-pass response with central frequencies of 9.3GHz and ±100MHz bandwidth, is fabricated and measured. Measured results validate the design and optimization with the required operation band, out-of-band suppression ratio and input power handling capability. The experiment results show that HPM beams are successfully operated at 2GW with pulse width of 105 ns.

In this paper, a series of compact power combiners are designed based on multimode transmission lines. Based on the multimode transmission lines, several multiport mode networks are constructed to achieve two-way, three-way, and four-way high-isolation power combinations. In detail, a four-port mode network based on a rectangular coaxial dual-mode transmission line and a five-port mode network based on a rectangular three-ridge three-mode transmission line are designed to achieve compact high-isolation two-way power combination. A six-port mode network based on a circular-coaxial three-mode transmission line is designed to achieve compact high-isolation three-way power combination. A nine-port mode network based on a four-ridge dual-coaxial six-mode transmission line is designed to achieve compact high-isolation four-way power combination. Based on a compact multimode transmission line, two-way, three-way, and four-way power combinations can be realized with single stages, high isolation, compact cross section sizes, low insertion loss, and high power capacity. The corresponding methods can be used to design several excellent power combiners.

In this paper, the design methods for four-way power combiners based on eight-port and nine-port mode networks are proposed. The eight-port mode network is fundamentally a two-stage binary four-way power combiner composed of three magic-Ts: two compact H-plane magic-Ts and one magic-T with coplanar arms. The two compact H-plane magic-Ts and the magic-T with coplanar arms function as the first and second stages, respectively. Thus, four-way coaxial-to-coaxial power combiners can be designed. A one-stage four-way power combiner based on a nine-port mode network is also proposed. Two matched coaxial ports and two matched rectangular ports are used to provide high isolation along the E-plane and the H-plane, respectively. The simulations agree well with the measured results. The designed four-way power combiners are superior in terms of their compact cross-sectional areas, a high degree of isolation, low insertion loss, low output-amplitude imbalance, and low phase imbalance, which make them well suited for solid-state power combination.

This paper proposes a design method for high-isolation n-way power combiners based on 2n + 1 port mode networks. The scattering matrix of a 2n + 1 port mode network is obtained by rigorously deriving the voltage and current relations. Following the proposed method, a compact four-way coaxial power combiner based on a nine-port mode network is designed and fabricated. Measurements show that from 7.8 to 10.3 GHz, the return losses of the input and output ports are better than −18 and −21 dB, respectively, the isolation levels between the input ports are higher than 21 dB, the insertion loss for power combination is less than 0.2 dB, and the amplitude and phase imbalances of the power combiner are less than approximately 0.15 dB and 2°, respectively. The simulated results agree well with the measured results. Moreover, the combiner has compact cross-sectional dimensions of $1.2 \lambda \times 1.2\lambda $ . It is clear that the designed four-way power combiner is superior in terms of its compact cross-sectional dimensions, high degree of isolation, low return loss, low insertion loss, and output amplitude and phase imbalance, which make it well suited for solid-state power combination. In addition, the power combiner is easy to fabricate and assemble. The proposed method shows great potential for realizing multi-way power combination with high isolation, low return loss, and compact cross-sectional dimensions.

In this paper, a compact waveguide magic-T for high-power solid-state power combining is proposed. The coplanar arms of the $E$ and $H$ ports are realized by the $E$ -plane power divider and ridge waveguide coupling structure. The input port of the $E$ -plane power divider is used to realize the difference port of the magic-T, and the ridge waveguide port is utilized to realize the sum port. Based on a theoretical analysis, a modified magic-T with two coaxial ports, one ridge port, and one rectangular port is designed and fabricated. Low-power tests show that from 7.8 to 9.4 GHz, when the difference port and the sum port are excited, the insertion loss of the magic-T is less than 0.2 dB. The isolation between the sum/difference ports and the two input ports is better than 40 and 26 dB. As for the in-phase and out-of-phase excitation, the amplitude and phase imbalances are less than ±0.05 dB and 1°. High-power experiments indicate that the power capacity is no less than 14 kW with a 1- $\mu \text{s}$ pulsewidth. The measured results agree with the simulations.

In this paper, a vertical four-way rectangular waveguide to microstrip power divider is proposed. The power divider achieves perfect power division from 10.1 GHz to 11 GHz with a 20 dB return loss and a short longitudinal length. In some cases, the element spacing is beyond $\lambda$ due to the volume of high power TR component, which causes grating-lobe in scan angle. Some methods are implemented, such as aperiodic array, flat-topped element method, and etc. In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable element method to suppress grating-lobe in $\lambda$ element spacing design which meets the power capacity demand. Simulation results show 6dB suppression more than ordinary design outside the scope of ± 5°.

Twin-slab model is usually used for theoretical analysis of low-power performances of remanent ferrite phase shifters (PSs). To verify the validity of ferrite slab model in research of high-power performances, double-toroid and quadruple-slab PSs with the same material parameters and structure dimensions are designed and fabricated. The theoretical analysis based on estimate formula and simulation illustrates that the spinwave excitation of perpendicular pumping occurs much more easily than that of parallel pumping in the PS and the high-power performances are mainly determined by the condition of E-plane slab section of ferrite toroids. The high-power experiment results demonstrate this conclusion.

A high-isolation eight-way power combiner is proposed in this paper. It is constructed by cascading three-stage power combiners in series. The eight-way power combiner is substantially a 17-port mode network. It consists of eight input ports, eight matching ports, and one output port. The mode network matrix cascade computation clearly reveals its working mechanism. Based on the 17-port network, an eight-way power combiner is realized with eight matching ports connected to loads. The model has been constructed and simulated in Hfss software. Simulation shows that from 8 to 10 GHz, the return loss is greater than 20 dB, the isolation is greater than 20 dB, and insertion loss is less than 0.15 dB. Its cross-section areas are approximately 0.3 λ×1.5 λ for the central frequency of 9 GHz. It is suitable for the integration of high power amplifiers.

A high-power 1-D phased array of 1-D leaky-wave antennas (high-power leaky-wave phased array antenna) is proposed and investigated. This array antenna is characterized by a high efficiency, notable power capacity, and high phase speed. The antenna is primarily composed of six high-power phase shifters, a sectorial-waveguide power divider, and a leaky-wave array antenna. First, a novel phase shifter is designed to overcome the problems of traditional phase shifters with low power capacities, huge volumes, and slow phase-shift velocities. The experimental results show that a power capacity of 200 MW and a fast phase shift of 360° within 0.1 s can be achieved. A high phase-shift precision of 1.5° can be realized, and the tested insertion loss is less than 0.15 dB. Second, a sectorial-waveguide power divider with a uniform output amplitude and an equal phase is proposed to feed a 1-D array antenna. Third, a high-efficiency leaky-wave array antenna with a high-power handling capacity is designed. At 9.6 GHz, the experimental results show that the gain of the phased array antenna with a ±20° beam scanning range is between 30.3 and 33 dB. Its aperture efficiency is approximately 59%. In addition, the results of a high-power test show that this array antenna has a power capacity of more than 1 GW.

A compact 8-port waveguide network is proposed in this letter. It is constructed by cascading two compact coaxial magic-Ts and one coplanar coaxial waveguide magic-T in series. Based on the 8-port waveguide network, a four-way power combiner is realized with three matching ports connected to loads. Measurements show that from 7.8 to 10.3 GHz, the return loss is greater than 18 dB, the isolation is greater than 21 dB, the insertion loss is less than 0.4 dB, and the amplitude and phase imbalance are less than 0.3 dB and 3°, respectively. Its cross section areas are approximately $1.1\lambda \times 1.1\lambda $ for the central frequency of 9 GHz. The measurements agree well with the simulations.

Two types of X-band compact E-plane differential phase shift circulators employing two identical 3-dB directional couplers are designed. The 180° and 90° ferrite phase shifters are adopted in each type separately, a phase match section and a 90° dielectric phase shifter are added to satisfy phase relations. The second circulator is fabricated and measured. The size of the cross section is less than $\pmb{\lambda\times 0.9 \lambda}$ ‘. The values of isolation and insertion loss compare with more than 15 dB and 0.3 to 0.5 dB, from 8.25 to 9.25 GHz.

In this paper, a compact four-way radial-cavity-based power divider/combiner have been designed, simulated and discussed. A substrate embedded by the inner conductor with an isolating circuit linking with four star-type resistors on it is employed for enhancing isolation of every input ports. Simulated results show a good performance within the operating frequency range from 8GHz to 9GHz, where the return loss of each ports and isolations between pairwise input ports are all greater than 20dB. The structure also shows an appreciable ability on combining efficiency and power capacity due to the cavity based.

Dielectric window breakdown is an important problem of high power microwave radiation. A honeycomb layer can suppress the multipactor in two directions to restrain dielectric window breakdown. This paper studies the effect of the honeycomb restrain layer on improving the dielectric window power capability. It also studies the multipactor suppression mechanism by using the electromagnetic particle-in-cell software, gives the design method, and accomplishes the test experiment. The experimental results indicated that the honeycomb restrain layer can effectively improve the power capability twice.

A new compact low-loss fast phase-shift high-power microwave (HPM) phase shifter (PS) is proposed, designed, and cold and high-power tested. Firstly, based on solving the scattering matrix and eigenvectors, we design a novel HPM dual circular polarizer, and then a dumbbell-like metal plug driven by a high-speed servomotor is used to slide a short circuit along the dual circular polarized port to adjust the output RF phase, which varies 180 $^{\circ}$ by moving the plug with a quarter of the guided wavelength. The X-band PS has a total length of 9.5 cm and a power capacity achieved 300 MW at 30-ns HPM pulse. A fast phase shift of 310 $^{\circ}$ was achieved within 0.1 s in test, a high precision of phase shift 1 $^{\circ}$ can be realized, and the tested insertion loss was $ 0.15 dB.

A compact five-port waveguide structure consisting of three rectangular ports, one coaxial port, and one circular waveguide port is proposed. The scattering matrix in an ideal case is derived using the symmetry properties of the structure. If the circular port and coaxial port are matched, the five-port waveguide structure is automatically matched. The two connected inserted coaxial probes, frustum and coaxial transition are used for matching the five-port waveguide structure with relatively wide bandwidth. The theoretical and experimental results are basically consistent with each other. With the circular port connected to the load, the five-port waveguide structure turns to be a reciprocal TEM mode to three-way TE 10 mode power divider. Measurements indicate that from 8 to 9.6 GHz, the return loss at three rectangular ports and coaxial port is less than −20 dB and −17 dB respectively. The isolation between three rectangular ports is higher than 20 dB. The volume of the five-port waveguide structure is as small as 1.5 λ×1.5 λ× λ.

A novel compact five-port waveguide power divider based on the single-ridge waveguide and three-ridge waveguide structure is proposed. It is realized by the coupling of the TE10 and TE30 modes. At the central coupling section, the single-ridge and three-ridge waveguides are used to constitute the conventional rectangular waveguide to reduce the sectional sizes. It consists of one input port, two output ports, and two isolated ports. For validation, a compact five-port power divider is designed, fabricated, and measured. The measured results show that, from 8 to 9 GHz, the return loss of the input port and output ports is higher than 18 dB, the isolation between the output ports is higher than 15 dB, the insertion loss is less than 0.3 dB, and the amplitude and the phase imbalance between the output ports are less than ±0.05 dB and ±1°, respectively. The simulated results basically agree with the simulations. Its sectional sizes are 1.1 λ × 0.4 λ which are more compact than most of the two-way isolated waveguide power dividers.

A novel high power X-band ferrite phase shifter (PS) employing the structure of several waveguides connected in parallel is proposed. Each of the waveguides is a phase shift unit utilizing a dual-toroid structure. First, the phase shift unit is designed, manufactured, and tested. The results indicate that the power capacity reaches 115 kW. At this power, the maximum magnetic field strength of ferrite is 7.9 kA/m, beyond which the nonlinear effect of ferrite will occur. On this basis, the PS that consists of four units connected in parallel is designed. According to the threshold of ferrite, the power capacity of the PS can theoretically reach 430 kW. Limited by the maximum output power of the microwave source, the preliminary high-power test results demonstrate that the PS can operate properly at 270 kW. The PS exhibits an insertion loss of 0.82 dB and a maximum differential phase shift of approximately 300° at 9.3 GHz. The return loss of the PS is more than 16 dB from 9.0 to 9.5 GHz.

In order to enhance the high-power performance of the ferrite phase shifter (PS), a method of increasing waveguide height is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Dual-toroid geometry is utilized as a high-power structure. Two configurations of X-band PSs with full-height (FH) and increased-height (IH) waveguides are designed and fabricated while keeping other parameters consistent. Comparative analysis based on simulation and high-power experiments is conducted. The simulation results agree well with experiments. Compared with the FHPS, the IHPS can enhance the peak-power-capacity from 90 kW to 140 kW while maintaining almost the same insertion loss of 0.5 dB with a slight increase in differential phase shift from 360° to 380°.

A compact five-port waveguide structure consisting of three rectangular ports, one coaxial port, and one circular waveguide port is proposed. The three rectangular waveguides are uniformly distributed in space at angles of 120°, and the coaxial and circular waveguides are located at the top and bottom, respectively, of the rectangular waveguides. The ideal scattering matrix is derived from the symmetry properties of the structure. If the circular and coaxial ports are matched, then the entire five-port waveguide structure is automatically matched. Two connected inserted coaxial probes, a frustum, and a coaxial transition are used to match the five-port waveguide structure with a relatively wide bandwidth. The theoretical and experimental results are generally consistent with each other. With the circular port connected to the load, the five-port waveguide structure becomes a reciprocal TEM mode-to-three-way TE10 mode power divider. Measurements indicate that from 8 to 9.6 GHz, the return losses at the three rectangular ports and the coaxial port are greater than 20 dB and 17 dB, respectively. The isolation among the three rectangular ports is higher than 20 dB. The amplitude and phase imbalances in the division of power are less than 0.1 dB and 2°, respectively. The volume of the five-port waveguide structure is as small as 1.5 λ × 1.5λ × λ.

In this paper, we propose a novel two-way coherent TM 01 mode combiner that combines the two-way TM 01 mode to a one-way TM 01 mode with high power capacity and combining efficiency. It is mainly composed of two two-way TM 01 mode to TE 10 mode power dividers, one four-way TE 10 mode to TM01 mode power combiner and four H-plane bend rectangular waveguides. Simulation shows that, at center frequency 9.3 GHz, the isolation between two input ports is −19 dB, return loss for the input port the output ports is −22 dB and −26 dB respectively, the insertion loss is less than −0.1 dB. From 9.1 to 9.5 GHz, the isolation and single port return loss are both better than −10 dB, and the insertion loss is better than −0.3 dB. Its power capacity can be predicted to be approximately 5GW with the breakdown threshold 100 MV/m. The novel TM 01 mode combiner has the merits of high power capacity and low insertion loss and high isolation between the input ports. Further experiments will be carried out to verify the simulations.

A high-power waveguide dual circular polarizer was theoretically designed and proof-of-principle was experimentally tested. It consists of two incident rectangular waveguides with a perpendicular H-plane junction, one circular waveguide with a pair of trapezoidal grooves coupled in E-plane at the top, a spherical crown located at the bottom, and an iris at the perpendicular junction of two rectangular waveguides. When wave incidents at one of the two separated rectangular waveguides, it, respectively, generates a left-hand circular polarized wave or a right-hand circular polarized wave in the circular waveguide. By adding a dumbbell-like metal plug driven with a high speed servomotor, a movable short circuit is formed along the circular waveguide to adjust the output RF phase of the rectangular port, realizing a high-speed high-power phase shifter. The C-band high power microwave (HPM) experiments were carried out, and the power capacity of the HPM polarizer and phase shifter was demonstrated to reach gigawatt level.

An X-band GW-level polarization controllable TM01-TE11 mode converter for high power microwave (HPM) systems is proposed. The mode converter consists of a TM01-TE10 mode coupler, a TE11-TE10 mode coupler and four phase shifters. The overall axial dimension is less than 300 mm. By controlling the phase shifters, the online adjustment of vertical, horizontal and circular polarizations can be implemented. The simulation demonstrates that the transmission efficiency is higher than 95.6% from 9.4 GHz to 9.8 GHz. The power capacity of the mode converter is on GW-level.

High-gradient electric breakdown is the limiting factor of high power microwave transmission. By using the four-frame high speed camera, the temporal and spatial evolution of optical emission in different waveguide position is diagnosed in nanosecond time-range. The optical distribution is non-uniform in angular direction, and brighter close to the wall surface than the central space. The light may come from the low energy photons from the continuous bremsstrahlung radiation spectrum by high-energy electron bombarding the metal surface of collector. The multiple reflections of photons in the waveguide lead to the spatial non-uniform illumination.

A compact high power microwave phase shifter is proposed in this paper. Firstly, a novel dual circular polarizer which can convert the input rectangular waveguide TE10 mode to the circular waveguide pure circular polarized TE11 mode is designed. Then a metal plug driven by a high-speed sever motor is used to adjust the output RF phase by changing the position of the movably short dual circular polarized port. The output RF phase varies 360° by moving a half of the guided wavelength. The cold tests and high power microwave experiment have been carried out which are consistent with the theory design perfectly.

A high-power-capacity transmitting and receiving structure (TRS) is proposed. It has the ability of transmitting the GW-level high power microwave from the microwave sources with the horizontal polarized TE11 mode and receiving the microwave signal from the target with the orthogonal polarized TE11 mode. It is realized by the cooperation of a polarization-isolation-structure (PIS) and a two-way circular TE11 mode to rectangular TE10 mode power divider. Simulation shows that from 9.65 to 9.71 GHz, its power capacity is more than 3 GW at the transmitting format. The transmitting and receiving channel have an isolation of 60 dB which can prevent the receivers connecting to the receiving channel suffering from breakdown. The insertion losses for the transmitting and receiving format are both less than 0.03 dB.

A novel, compact, TM01-TE10 mode power divider and a novel, compact, four-way TE10-TM01 mode power combiner were theoretically designed and experimentally tested as a proof of principle. The theoretical and experimental S parameters are consistent with each other. High-power experiments show that their power capacities are no less than 1.5 GW and 3 GW, respectively. The devices have the merits of high power capacities and low insertion losses.

The application of a resonant magnetic field to suppress the multipactor at the vacuum/dielectric interface of a high-power microwave window was theoretically proposed by Chang et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 96, 111502 (2010)] and the proof-of-principle was experimentally demonstrated by Chang et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 97, 141501 (2010)]. However, for transmitting gigawatt power, conventional large-scale magnets have the significant drawback of a nonuniform and heterogeneous B-field, which enhances the multipactor rather than suppresses it. The Halbach-like magnets for generating the transverse homogeneous B-field in a large scale are studied for suppressing the multipactor; the underlying physics in the particle-in-cell simulation was simulated, and the window breakdown threshold was significantly enhanced at multi-gigawatt.

An ultra compact 4-way high-power microwave (HPM) waveguide combiner to realize coherent microwave combination was theoretically designed and proof-of-principle experimentally tested. The theoretical and experimental S-parameters are basically consistent with each other, and the multi-channels of HPM combiner are effectively isolated with each other to avoid the inter-modulating among the HPM sources. The C-band HPM experiment was carried out, and the power capacity of the HPM combiner was demonstrated to reach multi-gigawatts.
