In a joint theoretical–experimental study, we shed light on the optical properties of intra- and interlayer excitons at a tetracene/TMD interface. We explore the role of phonons on the photoluminescence spectra in these heterostructures.

Radical-based molecules are employed as functional materials in organic electronic devices.

Closed-loop circular utilization of plastics is of manifold significance, yet energy-intensive and poorly selective scission of the ubiquitous carbon-carbon (C-C) bonds in contemporary commercial polymers pose tremendous challenges to envisioned recycling and upcycling scenarios. Here, we demonstrate a topochemical approach for creating elongated C-C bonds with a bond length of 1.57∼1.63 Å between repeating units in the solid state with decreased bond dissociation energies. Elongated bonds were introduced between the repeating units of 12 distinct polymers from three classes. In all cases, the materials exhibit rapid depolymerization via breakage of the elongated bond within a desirable temperature range (140∼260 °C) while otherwise remaining remarkably stable under harsh conditions. Furthermore, the topochemically prepared polymers are processable and 3D-printable while maintaining a high depolymerization yield and tunable mechanical properties. These results suggest that the crystalline polymers synthesized from simple photochemistry and without expensive catalysts are promising for practical applications with complete materials' circularity.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite semiconductors are under investigation for many applications owing to their excellent optoelectronic properties and relatively simple processing. Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites are an attractive class of hybrid perovskites that have additional optoelectronic tunability due to their accommodation of relatively large organic ligands. Nevertheless, contemporary ligand design depends on either expensive trial-and-error testing of whether a ligand can be integrated within the lattice or conservative heuristics that unduly limit the scope of ligand chemistries. Here, the structural determinants of ligand incorporation and perovskite stability are established by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of over ten thousand perovskites, including an algorithmically generated set of prospective ligand chemistries and all previously reported experimental primary ammonium ligands based on C, H, O, S, and N. The simulation results show near-perfect predictions of positive and negative literature examples, predict trade-offs between several ligand features and perovskite stability, and ultimately predict an inexhaustibly large 2D-compatible ligand design space. This dataset is used to train machine learning classifiers capable of predicting the geometric stability of perovskite structures based solely on generalizable ligand features, thus providing an inexpensive tool for screening putative ligands. As a demonstration, the model was used to down-select five new ligands that were successfully synthesized and incorporated into 2D perovskites. This work provides a new paradigm for future low-dimensional perovskite design.

Sn-based halide perovskites are promising for thermoelectric (TE) device applications because of their high electrical conductivity as well as the low thermal conductivity associated with their soft lattices. However, conventional three-dimensional Sn-based perovskites are not stable under typical TE device operating conditions. Here, we report a stable two-dimensional Sn-based perovskite for thermoelectric energy conversion by incorporating bulky conjugated ligands. We demonstrate a thin film with a large power factor of 5.42 ± 3.07 (average) and 7.07 (champion) μW m-1 K-2 at 343 K with an electrical conductivity of 5.07 S cm-1 and a Seebeck coefficient of 118.1 μV K-1. Importantly, these thin films show excellent operational stability (i.e., for over 100 h) at 313 K. This work suggests that the novel hybrid two-dimensional perovskites are a promising platform for thermoelectric energy conversion applications.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor heterostructures are key building blocks for many electronic and optoelectronic devices. Reconfiguring the band-edge states and modulating their interplay with charge carriers at the interface in a continuous manner have long been sought yet are challenging. Here, using organic semiconductor–incorporated 2D halide perovskites as the model system, we realize the manipulation of band-edge states and charge distribution via mechanical—rather than chemical or thermal—regulation. Compression induces band-alignment switching and charge redistribution due to the different pressure responses of organic and inorganic building blocks, giving controllable emission properties of 2D perovskites. We propose and demonstrate a “pressure gating” strategy that enables the control of multiple emission states within a single material. We also reveal that band-alignment transition at the organic-inorganic interface is intrinsically not well resolved at room temperature owing to the thermally activated transfer and shuffling of band-edge carriers. This work provides important fundamental insights into the energetics and carrier dynamics of hybrid semiconductor heterostructures.

Topochemical polymerizations hold the promise of producing high molecular weight and stereoregular single crystalline polymers by first aligning monomers before polymerization. However, monomer modifications often alter the crystal packing and result in non-reactive polymorphs. Here, we report a systematic study on the side chain functionalization of the bis(indandione) derivative system that can be polymerized under visible light. Precisely engineered side chains help organize the monomer crystals in a one-dimensional fashion to maintain the topochemical reactivity. By optimizing the side chain length and end group of monomers, the elastic modulus of the resulting polymer single crystals can also be greatly enhanced. Lastly, using ultrasonication, insoluble polymer single crystals can be processed into free-standing and robust polymer thin films. This work provides new insights on the molecular design of topochemical reactions and paves the way for future applications of this fascinating family of materials.

Achieving superradiance in solids is challenging due to fast dephasing processes from inherent disorder and thermal fluctuations. Perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are an exciting class of exciton emitters with large oscillator strength and high quantum efficiency, making them promising for solid-state superradiance. However, a thorough understanding of the competition between coherence and dephasing from phonon scattering and energetic disorder is currently unavailable. Here, we present an investigation of exciton coherence in perovskite QD solids using temperature-dependent photoluminescence line width and lifetime measurements. Our results demonstrate that excitons are coherently delocalized over 3 QDs at 11 K in superlattices leading to superradiant emission. Scattering from optical phonons leads to the loss of coherence and exciton localization to a single QD at temperatures above 100 K. At low temperatures, static disorder and defects limit exciton coherence. These results highlight the promise and challenge in achieving coherence in perovskite QD solids.

Metal halide perovskites are promising for applications in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), but still suffer from defects-mediated nonradiative losses, which represent a major efficiency-limiting factor in perovskite-based LEDs (PeLEDs). Reported here is a strategy to synthesize molecular passivators with different anchoring groups for defects passivation. The passivated perovskite thin films exhibit improved optoelectronic properties as well as reduced grain size and surface roughness, thus enable highly efficient PeLEDs with an external quantum efficiency of 15.6 % using an imidazolium terminated passivator. Further demonstrated is that the in situ formation of low-dimensional perovskite phase on the surface of three-dimensional perovskite nanograins is responsible for surface defects passivation, which leads to significantly enhanced device performance. Our results provide new fundamental insights into the role of organic molecular passivators in boosting the performance of PeLEDs.

Anionic diffusion in a soft crystal lattice of hybrid halide perovskites affects their stability, optoelectronic properties and the resulting device performance. The use of two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites improves the chemical stability of perovskites and suppresses the intrinsic anionic diffusion in solid-state devices. Based on this strategy, devices with an enhanced stability and reduced hysteresis have been achieved. However, a fundamental understanding of the role of organic cations in inhibiting anionic diffusion across the perovskite–ligand interface is missing. Here we demonstrate the first quantitative investigation of the anionic interdiffusion across atomically flat 2D vertical heterojunctions. Interestingly, the halide diffusion does not follow the classical diffusion process. Instead, a ‘quantized’ layer-by-layer diffusion model is proposed to describe the behaviour of the anionic migration in 2D halide perovskites. Our results provide important insights into the mechanism of anionic diffusion in 2D perovskites and provide a new materials platform with an enhanced stability for heterostructure integration. The realization of atomically flat vertical 2D perovskite heterojunctions offers a novel materials platform that reveals the mechanism of anionic diffusion in 2D perovskites.

A selenophene-containing conjugated organic ligand, 2-(4′-methyl-5′-(5-(3-methylthiophen-2-yl)selenophen-2-yl)-[2,2′-bithiophen]-5-yl)ethan-1-aminium (STm), was synthesized and incorporated into a Sn(II)-based two-dimensional perovskite, (STm)2SnI4. The band offset between the perovskite and ligand can be fine-tuned by introducing the STm ligand. Both field-effect transistor and light-emitting diode devices based on (STm)2SnI4 films exhibit high performance and enhanced operational stability.

Organic-inorganic halide perovskites are well-known for their unique self-healing ability. In the presence of strong external stimuli, such as light, temperature, and moisture, high-energy defects are created which can be healed by removing the perovskite from the degradation source. This self-healing ability has been showcased in devices with recoverable performance and day-and-night cycling operation to dramatically extend the device lifetime and even mechanical durability. However, to date, the mechanistic details and theory around this captivating trait are sparse and convoluted by the complex nature of perovskites. With a clear understanding of the intrinsic self-healing property, perovskite solar cells with extended lifetimes and durability can be designed to realize the large-scale commercialization of perovskite solar cells. Here, we spotlight the relevant degradation and self-healing literature and then propose design strategies to help conceptualize future research.

Epitaxial heterostructures based on oxide perovskites and III–V, II–VI and transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors form the foundation of modern electronics and optoelectronics1–7. Halide perovskites—an emerging family of tunable semiconductors with desirable properties—are attractive for applications such as solution-processed solar cells, light-emitting diodes, detectors and lasers8–15. Their inherently soft crystal lattice allows greater tolerance to lattice mismatch, making them promising for heterostructure formation and semiconductor integration16,17. Atomically sharp epitaxial interfaces are necessary to improve performance and for device miniaturization. However, epitaxial growth of atomically sharp heterostructures of halide perovskites has not yet been achieved, owing to their high intrinsic ion mobility, which leads to interdiffusion and large junction widths18–21, and owing to their poor chemical stability, which leads to decomposition of prior layers during the fabrication of subsequent layers. Therefore, understanding the origins of this instability and identifying effective approaches to suppress ion diffusion are of great importance22–26. Here we report an effective strategy to substantially inhibit in-plane ion diffusion in two-dimensional halide perovskites by incorporating rigid π-conjugated organic ligands. We demonstrate highly stable and tunable lateral epitaxial heterostructures, multiheterostructures and superlattices. Near-atomically sharp interfaces and epitaxial growth are revealed by low-dose aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm the reduced heterostructure disorder and larger vacancy formation energies of the two-dimensional perovskites in the presence of conjugated ligands. These findings provide insights into the immobilization and stabilization of halide perovskite semiconductors and demonstrate a materials platform for complex and molecularly thin superlattices, devices and integrated circuits. An epitaxial growth strategy that improves the stability of two-dimensional halide perovskites by inhibiting ion diffusion in their heterostructures using rigid π-conjugated ligands is demonstrated, and shows near-atomically sharp interfaces.

The rapid development of solar cells based on lead halide perovskites (LHPs) has prompted very active research activities in other closely-related fields. Colloidal nanostructures of such materials display superior optoelectronic properties. Especially, one-dimensional (1D) LHPs nanowires show anisotropic optical properties when they are highly oriented. However, the ionic nature makes them very sensitive to external environment, limiting their large scale practical applications. Here, we introduce an amphiphilic block copolymer, polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-P4VP), to chemically modify the surface of colloidal CsPbBr3 nanowires. The resulting core-shell nanowires show enhanced photoluminescent emission and good colloidal stability against water. Taking advantage of the stability enhancement, we further applied a modified Langmuir-Blodgett technique to assemble monolayers of highly aligned nanowires, and studied their anisotropic optical properties.

Two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites with strongly bound excitons and tunable structures are desirable for optoelectronic applications. Exciton transport and annihilation are two key processes in determining device efficiencies; however, a thorough understanding of these processes is hindered by that annihilation rates are often convoluted with exciton diffusion constants. Here we employ transient absorption microscopy to disentangle quantum-well-thickness-dependent exciton diffusion and annihilation in two-dimensional perovskites, unraveling the key role of electron-hole interactions and dielectric screening. The exciton diffusion constant is found to increase with quantum-well thickness, ranging from 0.06 ± 0.03 to 0.34 ± 0.03 cm2 s−1, which leads to long-range exciton diffusion over hundreds of nanometers. The exciton annihilation rates are more than one order of magnitude lower than those found in the monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides. The combination of long-range exciton transport and slow annihilation highlights the unique attributes of two-dimensional perovskites as an exciting class of optoelectronic materials., Two-dimensional hybrid perovskites are promising excitonic materials; however, there currently lacks understanding on exciton diffusion and annihilation. Here Deng et al. employ transient absorption microscopy to disentangle quantum-well-thickness-dependent exciton transport and annihilation in these materials.

Two-dimensional (2D) organic–inorganic hybrid halide perovskites exhibit unique properties, such as long charge carrier lifetimes, high photoluminescence quantum efficiencies, and great tolerance to defects. Over the last several decades tremendous progress has occurred in the development of 2D layered halide perovskite semiconductor materials and devices. Chemical functionalization of 2D halide perovskites is an effective approach for tuning their electronic properties. A large amount of effort has been made in compositional engineering of the cations and anions in the perovskite lattice. However, few efforts have incorporated rationally designed semiconducting organic moieties into these systems to alter the overall chemical and optoelectronic properties of 2D perovskites. In fact, incorporation of large conjugated organic groups in the spatially confined inorganic perovskite matrix was found to be challenging, and this synthetic challenge hinders a deeper understanding of the materials’ structure–property relationships. Recently, exciting progress has been made regarding the molecular design, optical characterization, and device fabrication of novel 2D halide perovskite materials that incorporate functional organic semiconducting building blocks. In this article, we provide a timely review regarding this recent progress. Moreover, we discuss successes and current challenges regarding the synthesis, characterization, and device applications of such hybrid materials and provide a perspective on the true future promise of these advanced nanomaterials.

Open-shell macromolecules (i.e., polymers containing radical sites either along their backbones or at the pendant sites of repeat units) have attracted significant attention owing to their intriguing chemical and physical (e.g., redox, optoelectronic, and magnetic) properties, and they have been proposed and/or implemented in a wide range of potential applications (e.g., energy storage devices, electronic systems, and spintronic modules). These successes span multiple disciplines that range from advanced macromolecular chemistry through nanoscale structural characterization and on to next-generation solid-state physics and the associated devices. In turn, this has allowed different scientific communities to expand the palette of radical-containing polymers relatively quickly. However, critical gaps remain on many fronts, especially regarding the elucidation of key structure-property-function relationships that govern the underlying electrochemical, optoelectronic, and spin phenomena in these materials systems. Here, we highlight vital developments in the history of open-shell macromolecules to explain the current state of the art in the field. Moreover, we provide a critical review of the successes and bring forward open opportunities that, if solved, could propel this class of materials in a meaningful manner. Finally, we provide an outlook to address where it seems most likely that open-shell macromolecules will go in the coming years. Our considered view is that the future of radical-containing polymers is extremely bright and the addition of talented researchers with diverse skills to the field will allow these materials and their end-use devices to have a positive impact on the global science and technology enterprise in a relatively rapid manner.

Random lasing in organic-inorganic lead halide quasi-2D perovskite was observed by measuring lasing threshold, spectral narrowing, spectral correlations and critical volume. The photon transport mean free path is found to be comparable to the lasing wavelength, suggesting a hybrid localized-diffusive lasing regime.

Near-infrared (NIR)-absorbing organic semiconductors have opened up many exciting opportunities for organic photovoltaic (OPV) research. For example, new chemistries and synthetical methodologies have been developed; especially, the breakthrough Y-series acceptors, originally invented by our group, specifically Y1, Y3, and Y6, have contributed immensely to boosting single-junction solar cell efficiency to around 19%; novel device architectures such as tandem and transparent organic photovoltaics have been realized. The concept of NIR donors/acceptors thus becomes a turning point in the OPV field. Here, the development of NIR-absorbing materials for OPVs is reviewed. According to the low-energy absorption window, here, NIR photovoltaic materials (p-type (polymers) and n-type (fullerene and nonfullerene)) are classified into four categories: 700-800 nm, 800-900 nm, 900-1000 nm, and greater than 1000 nm. Each subsection covers the design, synthesis, and utilization of various types of donor (D) and acceptor (A) units. The structure-property relationship between various kinds of D, A units and absorption window are constructed to satisfy requirements for different applications. Subsequently, a variety of applications realized by NIR materials, including transparent OPVs, tandem OPVs, photodetectors, are presented. Finally, challenges and future development of novel NIR materials for the next-generation organic photovoltaics and beyond are discussed.

Controlling grain growth is of great importance in maximizing the charge carrier transport for polycrystalline thin-film electronic devices. The thin-film growth of halide perovskite materials has been manipulated via a number of approaches including solvent engineering, composition engineering, and post-treatment processes. However, none of these methods lead to large-scale atomically flat thin films with extremely large grain size and high charge carrier mobility. Here, we demonstrate a novel π-conjugated ligand design approach for controlling the thin-film nucleation and growth kinetics in two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites. By extending the π-conjugation and increasing the planarity of the semiconducting ligand, nucleation density can be decreased by more than 5 orders of magnitude. As a result, wafer-scale 2D perovskite thin films with highly ordered crystalline structures and extremely large grain size are readily obtained. We demonstrate high-performance field-effect transistors with hole mobility approaching 10 cm2 V-1 s-1 with ON/OFF current ratios of ∼106 and excellent stability and reproducibility. Our modeling analysis further confirms the origin of enhanced charge transport and field and temperature dependence of the observed mobility, which allows for clear deciphering of the structure-property relationships in these nascent 2D semiconductor systems.

Technology advancements in history have often been propelled by material innovations. In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted substantial interest as an ideal platform to construct atomic-level material architectures. In this work, we design a reaction pathway steered in a very different energy landscape, in contrast to typical thermal chemical vapor deposition method in high temperature, to enable room-temperature atomic-layer substitution (RT-ALS). First-principle calculations elucidate how the RT-ALS process is overall exothermic in energy and only has a small reaction barrier, facilitating the reaction to occur at room temperature. As a result, a variety of Janus monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides with vertical dipole could be universally realized. In particular, the RT-ALS strategy can be combined with lithography and flip-transfer to enable programmable in-plane multiheterostructures with different out-of-plane crystal symmetry and electric polarization. Various characterizations have confirmed the fidelity of the precise single atomic layer conversion. Our approach for designing an artificial 2D landscape at selective locations of a single layer of atoms can lead to unique electronic, photonic, and mechanical properties previously not found in nature. This opens a new paradigm for future material design, enabling structures and properties for unexplored territories.

Surface passivation is an effective way to boost the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, a key challenge faced by most of the passivation strategies is reducing the interface charge recombination without imposing energy barriers to charge extraction. Here, a novel multifunctional semiconducting organic ammonium cationic interface modifier inserted between the light-harvesting perovskite film and the hole-transporting layer is reported. It is shown that the conjugated cations can directly extract holes from perovskite efficiently, and simultaneously reduce interface non-radiative recombination. Together with improved energy level alignment and the stabilized interface in the device, a triple-cation mixed-halide medium-bandgap PSC with an excellent power conversion efficiency of 22.06% (improved from 19.94%) and suppressed ion migration and halide phase segregation, which lead to a long-term operational stability, is demonstrated. This strategy provides a new practical method of interface engineering in PSCs toward improved efficiency and stability.
