The Limarí River valley, located in the Coquimbo Region of Chile, is an important area for agricultural production that pertains to the transverse valleys ecoregion, known as Norte Chico. In recent decades, the continuous expansion of agriculture towards the dryland areas has favored the introduction and establishment of potential pests, such as arthropods, that may affect forestry crops and transmit zoonotic diseases. We analyzed the arthropod assemblages that were of forestry and medical-veterinary importance in the Limarí basin. After reviewing historical data, specimen collections, and the available literature, a total of 10 families, 39 genera, and 51 species of arthropods of forestry importance were recorded, 43.1% of which were of quarantine importance. Xylophagous groups of quarantine importance to the US included Cryptotermes brevis (Kalotermitidae), Neoterius mystax (Bostrichidae), Tyndaris planata (Buprestidae), Rhyephenes humeralis (Curculionidae) and Phoracantha recurva (Cerambycidae). Other quarantine insects of forestry importance recorded in the area included were Micrapate scabrata and Polycaon chilensis (Bostrichidae). In addition, the groups of medical-veterinary importance were represented by 11 families, 14 genera, and 18 species, 9 of which were arachnids and 9 were insects. Among the identified arachnids, the most important genera were Loxosceles (Sicariidae), Latrodectus, Steatoda (Theridiidae) and Rhipicephalus (Ixodidae), whereas among the identified insects, the most important were Triatoma and Mepraia (Reduviidae), Pediculus (Pediculidae), and Ceratophyllus (Ceratophyllidae). We hope this study serves as a basis for the development of forest pest monitoring and control programs as well as an understanding of the potential risks posed by zoonotic agents and their implications for public health. Resumen El valle del Río Limarí, en la Región de Coquimbo, es un importante foco de producción agrícola en los valles transversales del Norte Chico. En las últimas décadas, la constante expansión de los cultivos agrícolas hacia zonas de secano ha permitido la introducción y establecimiento de potenciales plagas, como los artrópodos, que pueden afectar las producciones forestales y constituir elementos zoonóticos. Se analizó la importancia forestal y médico-veterinaria de los artrópodos de la cuenca del Limarí. Mediante la revisión de bases de datos históricas, colecciones y literatura disponible, se registró un total de 10 familias, 39 géneros y 51 especies de artrópodos de importancia forestal, de las cuales el 43,1% fueron de importancia cuarentenaria. Entre los elementos xilófagos de importancia cuarentenaria para EE.UU. destacaron los registros de Cryptotermes brevis (Kalotermitidae), Neoterius mystax (Bostrichidae), Tyndaris planata (Buprestidae), Rhyephenes humeralis (Curculionidae) and Phoracantha recurva (Cerambycidae). Otros insectos de importancia forestal reportados fueron Micrapate scabrata y Polycaon chilensis (Bostrichidae). Por su parte, los elementos de importancia médico-veterinario estuvieron representados por 11 familias, 14 géneros y 18 especies, de las cuales 9 especies correspondieron a arácnidos y 9 a insectos. Dentro de los arácnidos destacaron los géneros Loxosceles (Sicariidae), Latrodectus, Steatoda (Theridiidae) and Rhipicephalus (Ixodidae), mientras que dentro de los insectos las más importantes fueron Triatoma y Mepraia (Reduviidae), Pediculus (Pediculidae), y Ceratophyllus (Ceratophyllidae). Se espera que la información del presente estudio sirva de base para desarrollar programas de monitoreo y control de potenciales plagas forestales, así como también entender los potenciales riesgos de elementos zoonóticos con implicancias para la salud pública.

Sclerophyllous forest is among the most representative types of woody plant communities in central Chile where Quillaja saponaria is considered to be one of the most important species. In this study, we analysed the main factors that explain the geographical patterns of variation in composition, richness and phylogenetic diversity of woody plant communities in the Chilean sclerophyllous forest where Quillaja saponaria is present. Vegetation surveys were performed for trees and shrubs in thirty-nine sites from 30° to 38° of latitude South in the Mediterranean biome of Chile. Composition, richness, alfa diversity and phylogenetic diversity metrics of the communities were calculated and associated with spatial (latitude, longitude and altitude), climate (annual mean temperature, annual precipitation, aridity), and disturbance variables (type of adjacent vegetation matrix) using multiple regression models. Sixty taxa were identified, distributed in 29 families, including 23 trees and 37 shrubs. A significant effect of the type of adjacent vegetation matrix (i.e. agricultural land, commercial forestry plantation or natural forest) on diversity and composition of the sampled communities was found. Significant effects of latitude on diversity, and altitude, latitude and annual mean temperature on composition were also found. Metrics of phylogenetic diversity and structure were only associated with altitude and latitude. In conclusion, diversity, composition and phylogenetic structure patterns of sclerophyllous forest communities are associated with spatial and climate variables, and anthropogenic disturbance has also caused important changes in these communities. RESUMEN El Bosque Esclerófilo es uno de los tipos más representativos de las comunidades de plantas leñosas en el centro de Chile, donde Quillaja saponaria es considerada una de las especies más importantes. En este trabajo se analizaron los principales factores que explican la distribución geográfica de la variación en la composición, riqueza y diversidad filogenética de las comunidades de plantas leñosas del Bosque Esclerófilo de Chile, donde Q. saponaria está presente. Se llevaron a cabo censos de vegetación de árboles y arbustos en treinta y nueve sitios desde los 30° a los 38° de latitud sur en el bioma mediterráneo de Chile. Se calcularon la composición, riqueza, diversidad alfa y la diversidad filogenética de las comunidades y se asociaron con variables espaciales (latitud, longitud y altitud), climáticas (temperatura media anual, precipitación anual, aridez), y variables de perturbación (tipo de matriz de la vegetación adyacente) usando modelos de regresión múltiple. Se identificaron sesenta taxones, distribuidos en 29 familias, incluyendo 23 árboles y 37 arbustos. Se encontró un efecto significativo del tipo de matriz de vegetación adyacente (es decir, tierras agrícolas, plantaciones forestales comerciales o bosques naturales) en la diversidad y composición de las comunidades estudiadas. También se encontraron efectos significativos de la latitud sobre la diversidad; y de la altitud, latitud y temperatura media anual sobre la composición de las comunidades, la diversidad filogenética sólo se asoció con la altitud y la latitud. En conclusión, la diversidad, composición y patrones de estructura filogenética se asocian con variables espaciales y climáticas; y las perturbaciones antropogénicas también han provocado cambios importantes en estas comunidades.

Heterozygote deficiencies in natural populations of outbreeding tree species are common and thought to be due mainly to biparental inbreeding. Inbreeding is believed to be caused by family structure within populations, a product of limited seed dispersal and probably limited pollen dispersal. Although both theory and simulation studies predict that structure should be apparent where trees are isolated by distance, most studies of structure in natural populations have detected only a weak spatial genetic structuring. In this contribution, we compare the use of spatial autocorrelation methodology and F statistics with the concept of relatedness to examine the spatial genetic structure in the natural population of a native southern beech and to explore the discrepancy between theory and observations. Autocorrelation detected structure in only a few of the nine enzyme loci tested in an estimated patch size of approximately 10 m. By successively eliminating the largest distances in the Gabriel map, the population was separated into groups or patches of neighbors, which were then tested for relatedness. Three groups of relatives were found interspersed with seven groups of unrelated individuals. The F statistics for these groups also showed weak genetic structure. We suggest that heterogeneity of family structure within natural populations may be one reason why more spatial genetic structure has not been detected. Es común encontrar deficiencias de heterocigotos en poblaciones naturales de especies forestales alógamas, lo cual se explicaría por un aumento del nivel de consanguinidad. Se ha postulado que la consanguinidad es causada por la presencia de estructuras de individuos emparentados dentro de las poblaciones, como producto de la limitada dispersión de polen y semillas. Si bien, antecedentes teóricos y estudios de simulaciones predicen que la estructura debería ser aparente cuando existe aislamiento por distancia, muchos estudios de estructura en poblaciones naturales, han detectado sólo un débil estructuración espacial. En este artículo se compara el uso de la metodología de autocorrelación espacial, estadísticos F y estimadores de parentesco. El objetivo es examinar la estructura genética espacial de una especial nativa de Nothofagus y explorar la discrepancia entre teoría y observaciones experimentales. El análisis de autocorrelación detectó estructura sólo para algunas de las nueve enzimas analizadas. Se estimaron tamaños de vecindades de alrededor de 10 m. Al eliminar sucesivamente las distancias más grandes, en el mapa de Gabriel, las poblaciones se separaron en vecindades, las que fueron analizadas para su nivel de parentesco. Se detectaron tres grupos de individuos emparentados, mezclados con siete grupos de individuos relativamente no emparentados. El estadístico F para los grupos identificados también mostró una débil estructura genética. Se sugiere que la heterogeneidad de la estructura familiar dentro de las poblaciones naturales puede ser una de las razones que explica la escasa estructura genética espacial observada en Nothofagus nervosa.
