Neoplasms of the exocrine pancreas are uncommon in domestic animals and rarely occur in wildlife. This article describes the clinical and pathological findings of one case of metastatic exocrine pancreatic adenocarcinoma in an 18-year-old giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) in captivity with a history of inappetence and apathy. Abdominal ultrasonography was inconclusive, and tomography revealed a neoplasm affecting the urinary bladder and hydroureter. During the anaesthesia recovery, the animal presented a cardiorespiratory arrest and died. Grossly, there were neoplastic nodules in the pancreas, urinary bladder, spleen, adrenal glands, and mediastinal lymph node. Microscopically, all nodules were composed of a malignant hypercellular proliferation of epithelial cells with acinar or solid disposition, supported by a sparse fibrovascular stroma. Neoplastic cells were immunolabeled with antibodies to Pan-CK, CK7, CK20, PPP and chromogranin A. Approximately 25% of the cells were positive for the presence of Ki-67 too. Pathological and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the diagnosis of metastatic exocrine pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Aiming at the sustainability of meat production, insects can replace traditional ingredients in the diet of poultry. Studies evaluating performance in birds have emerged to ensure this ability, but few address the health parameters of animals. This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of the inclusion of Madagascar cockroach meal in traditional diets on hematological and histopathological traits of meat-type quails. The inclusion of Madagascar cockroach meal in the diet was evaluated in four levels: 0%, 6%, 12%, and 18%. Observations for hematological and histopathological traits from 6 repetitions on each group were recorded for both sexes at 35 days of age. Hematological parameters were not influenced by Madagascar cockroach inclusion on diet and quail's sex. Red and white blood cells count were within the normal range for poultry. No significant findings were observed during the histopathological evaluation of the pancreas, duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Liver fatty degeneration was visualized in all treatments in the same intensity. Quail's diets containing up to 18% insect meal during the growth period did not affect the studied health parameters, so the Madagascar cockroach meal could be considered as an alternative to a protein ingredient for poultry production.

This study describes a case report in captive rose-ringed parakeets (Psittacula krameri) that developed clinical signs and eventually died after introducing new birds without quarantine. Bronchopneumonia and airsacculitis with syncytial cells associated with intranuclear inclusion bodies were found. Herpesvirus was detected in lungs and liver by PCR, and a nearly complete genome sequence of a Psittacid alphaherpesvirus 5 was obtained from the lung of a bird. Metagenomic analysis also identified beak and feather disease virus in the same samples. The study also highlights the importance of quarantine for avoiding the introduction of new diseases in captive aviaries.

Com o objetivo de caracterizar as lesões intestinais nos diferentes segmentos e idade de aves acometidas, além de investigar a etiologia da RSS, pintinhos naturalmente infectados apresentando atraso no crescimento, apatia, alimento mal digerido nas fezes ou diarreia foram coletados de quatro diferentes granjas comerciais localizadas em três municípios do estado de Minas Gerais. Pintinhos sem sinais clínicos foram usados como controle. O número total de pintinhos examinados foi 243. A média de peso dos pintinhos acometidos foi menor que o esperado para os lotes. Macroscopicamente, o intestino delgado dessas aves estava mais esbranquiçado, com conteúdo aquoso, mucoso ou espumoso no lúmen, além de alimento pobremente digerido. Histologicamente, havia enterite com necrose e dilatação discreta a acentuada das criptas com achatamento do epitélio. O jejuno foi o segmento mais acometido histologicamente. A morfometria revelou atrofia das vilosidades especialmente no jejuno e íleo. Alterações histológicas em outros órgãos não foram observadas. O sequenciamento de última geração (NGS) detectou vírus da nefrite aviária (ANV), rotavírus aviário (AvRV) e picornavírus em jejuno dos pintinhos de sete dias. Em pintinhos de um dia, nenhum vírus foi detectado no jejuno. A análise da sequência molecular do picornavírus revelou similaridade genética com o gênero Gallivírus (GV). O fígado é um órgão essencial e realiza várias atividades vitais, como metabolização, síntese e armazenamento. Este trabalho teve como objetivo descrever a macroscopia e microscopia do fígado do zebrafish e suas modificações temporais em treze semanas. Foram utilizados quarenta e seis (46) peixes da espécie Danio rerio, adultos, vinte e sete (27) fêmeas e dezenove (19) machos. Sete peixes foram eutanasiados para avaliação macroscópica e três peixes eutanasiados semanalmente durante treze semanas para avaliação microscópica. Realizou-se técnica histológica de rotina e as lâminas foram coradas com Hematoxilina/Eosina e Ácido Periódico de Schiff (PAS). Semanalmente, foram determinadas as densidades volumétricas (Vv(h)) e numérica (Nv(h)) dos hepatócitos e a intensidade de vacuolização. O fígado localizou-se na cavidade celomática ventralmente à bexiga natatória, apresentou coloração levemente amarronzado e estava dividido em três lobos hepáticos. Microscopicamente, era constituído por hepatócitos que formavam uma dupla camada celular ao redor de sinusóides. A coloração do citoplasma dos hepatócitos nos machos foi mais eosinofílica e nas fêmeas basofílica. Não foi observada a formação de tríades portais e células fagocitárias. A vesícula biliar apresentava epitélio de transição e os ductos biliares epitélio simples cúbico. As densidades volumétrica e numérica dos hepatócitos durante as treze semanas não apresentaram diferença estatística, mas a correlação entre esses parâmetros foi positiva. A vacuolização foi devido a presença de glicogênio. O fígado de zebrafish possui particularidades macro e microestruturais e quantitativamente tem grande capacidade de adaptação do número e volume de hepatócitos em resposta às necessidades fisiológicas do animal naquele momento. Liver is an essential organ and performs a number of vital activities such as metabolism, synthesis and storage. This research aimed to describe macroscopically and microscopically the liver of zebrafish and the liver temporal changes in thirteen weeks. We used forty six (46) fishes Danio rerio, adults, twenty seven (27) females and nineteen (19) males. Seven fishes were euthanized for macroscopic analyses and three fishes were euthanized weekly for thirteen weeks for microscopic analyses. It was conducted routine histological technique and the slides were stained with Hematoxylin/Eosin and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS). Weekly, it was determined volumetric (Vv(h)) and numerical (Nv(h)) densities of hepatocytes and intensity of vacuolization. The liver was located in the coelomic cavity ventrally to swim bladder, showed slightly brownish and was divided into three hepatic lobes. Microscopically, the liver consisted of hepatocytes arranged as a double cell layer around sinusoids. The staining of the cytoplasm of hepatocytes in males was more eosinophilic and basophilic than in females. Formation of portal triads and phagocytic cells were not found. The gallbladder had transitional epithelium and biliary ducts were composed by simple cubic epithelium. The volume and numerical density of hepatocytes during thirteen weeks showed no statistical difference, but the correlation between these parameters was positive. The vacuolization was due glycogen. The zebrafish liver has macro and microstructural features and quantitatively has great ability to adapt in volume and number of hepatocytes in response to the physiological needs.
