This article examines how much parent-child interactions around the online world reflect broader, more long-standing parent-child relations and parenting dilemmas. It does so through exploring the meanings that parents give to their parenting practices and the beliefs that underlie parental mediation of their children's online activities as well as the reasons for any differences between their broader normative approach to parental mediation and their actual practices. Qualitative in-depth interviews conducted with 26 Spanish parents of children aged 9 to 16-years-old found that many parents favoured the managed progression of children towards more autonomy and gave reasons why it was important to trust older children. However, the analysis explores a range of dilemmas parents experience when trying to implement these ideals, where issues of privacy, trust and managing that progression all proved to be problematic.

A domestication framework applied to the study of young children’s use of touchscreen technologies helps interrogate material arising from the Toddlers and Tablets study of children aged from birth to five. There are diverse reasons for introducing these children to touchscreen technologies. Domestication approaches help uncover nuanced practices of occupying children with technologies but also reveal unanticipated uses. Parents often engage with children’s technological experiences in ways that reflect non-technological ones. Finally, young children’s lack of competency frequently requires parents to intervene, meaning that these children’s touchscreen use can be easy to control.

What actors and factors shape children and young people’s digital skills? And how do their digital skills impact the rest of their lives? These are the two research questions addressed in this paper, along with an analysis of how the research literature to date has measured digital skills. The findings reported here come from a systematic evidence review of the antecedents and consequences of digital skills (Haddon, Cino, Doyle, Livingstone, Mascheroni and Stoilova, forthcoming) as part of the ySKILLS project funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme.

This entry examines young people's experience of social media. While the term “social media” often refers to a more restrictive range of internet based platforms, a broader understanding of social media, taking into account historical antecedents, allows an appreciation of the precursors to current online practices, issues, and research frameworks. Hence, this entry covers relevant research on young people's use of mobile phones and the internet, before examining the emerging risk agenda. The short lifetime of digital technologies means that generational identities are difficult to establish around any particular technologies let alone around more far-reaching socio-technological ‘revolutions’. Examining the consumption and use of digital technologies throughout the stages of human development, this book provides a valuable overview of ICT usage and generational difference. It focuses on the fields of home, family and consumption as key arenas where these processes are being enacted, sometimes strengthening old distinctions, sometimes creating new ones, always embodying an inherent restlessness that affects all aspects and all stages of life.

Against the backdrop of extensive urban expansion and suburbanization (Chen 2000; Crawford 1994; Haddon 2001; Hall 1989; Thorns 1972) telephony is seen as a way to coordinate interaction (Katz 1999). However, there are also a number of claims about the potential effects that telecommunications can have on mobility (Katz 2001). For example, there is the suggestion that telephony and transportation stimulate each other (Falk and Abler 1980). Others argue that telephony modifies travel rather than reducing demand (Salomon 1985), and still others note the contrary idea that telephony replaces transportation (Claisse and Rowe 1993; 1988).

This chapter outlines the history and key elements of the domestication approach, showing where these are shared in some empirical studies of mobile telephony. It then shows how the approach could be extended out of the home to cover portable information and communication technologies (ICTs) and domestication within social networks.

The article provides a sense of how the field of domestication analysis has developed over the last 25 years, showing the range of ways in which has been deployed, and how it can address social issues relating to technologies. Understanding cross-cultural differences has not been a strong feature of this framework to date, but examples are provided to indicate how this dimension could be included and developed. Finally, a case study of children’s experience of smartphones and tablets is provided to illustrate how the framework can be used and be useful.

This article explores a range of research issues relating to children and mobile media, including the potential growth of children’s screen time, the regulation of children’s use of these media, the challenge of managing increasing media options, effects on children’s perception of time, problems posed for parental surveillance and the domestication of mobile media within peer groups. All of these are viewed in the context of broader societal change, evolving norms of childhood and parenthood, cross-cultural variation and the existence of diversity amongst children and youth.

This article reports a content analysis of press coverage of children and the internet in order to examine cross-cultural similarities and differences in the news values framing accounts of the benefits from and risks facing children online. By comparing media reporting in 14 European countries, the study found greater coverage of online risks than opportunities across Europe, which appears to be due to the high position of crime stories on the news agenda.. Thus readers, including parents, are exposed to media representations that often show the online world as being risky for children, which may affect perceptions of the prevalence of risk. However, there is national variation in terms of which risks receive more press attention, meaning that parents in different countries are potentially sensitised to different risks.
