Abstract

In solving partial differential equations (PDEs), Fourier Neural Operators (FNOs) have exhibited notable effectiveness. However, FNO is observed to be ineffective with large Fourier kernels that parameterize more frequencies. Current solutions rely on setting small kernels, restricting FNO's ability to capture complex PDE data in real-world applications. This paper offers empirical insights into FNO's difficulty with large kernels through spectral analysis: FNO exhibits a unique Fourier parameterization bias, excelling at learning dominant frequencies in target data while struggling with non-dominant frequencies. To mitigate such a bias, we propose SpecB-FNO to enhance the capture of non-dominant frequencies by adopting additional residual modules to learn from the previous ones' prediction residuals iteratively. By effectively utilizing large Fourier kernels, SpecB-FNO achieves better prediction accuracy on diverse PDE applications, with an average improvement of 50%.

Abstract

Abstract Background Previous data in humans suggest that extreme physical inactivity (EPI) affects iron metabolism differently between sexes. Our objective was to deepen the underlying mechanisms by studying rats of both sexes exposed to hindlimb unloading (HU), the reference experimental model mimicking EPI. Methods Eight‐week‐old male and female Wistar rats were assigned to control (CTL) or hindlimb unloading (HU) conditions (n = 12/group). After 7 days of HU, serum, liver, spleen, and soleus muscle were removed. Iron parameters were measured in serum samples, and ICP‐MS was used to quantify iron in tissues. Abstract

Summary: Background: In industrialized countries, the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) appears stabilized. This study examined the incidence and phenotype of IBD in Northern France over a 30-year period. Methods: Including all IBD patients recorded in the EPIMAD population-based registry from 1988 to 2017 in Northern France, we described the incidence and clinical presentation of IBD according to age, sex and time. Findings: A total of 22,879 incident IBD cases were documented (59% (n = 13,445) of Crohn’s disease (CD), 38% (n = 8803) of ulcerative colitis (UC), 3% (n = 631) of IBD unclassified (IBDU)). Over the study period, incidence of IBD, CD and UC was 12.7, 7.2 and 5.1 per 105 person-years, respectively. The adequate representation of interactions between the land surface and the atmosphere is of crucial importance in modern numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems. In this context, this study examines how errors in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) depend on the quality of near-surface prediction over land for medium-range NWP. Two series of 10-day forecasts from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC)’s global deterministic prediction system were evaluated: one similar to what is currently used in ECCC’s operational systems and the other with improved land surface modeling and land data assimilation. An objective evaluation was performed for the 2019 summer season in North America, with a special emphasis on three specific areas: northern Canada, the central US, and the southeastern US. The results indicate that the impact of the new land surface package is more difficult to interpret in the PBL than it is at the screen level. The error differences between the two experiments are quite distinct for the three regions examined. As expected, random errors (standard deviations) for air temperature and specific humidity in the PBL are directly linked with their own random errors at the screen level, with correlation coefficients decreasing from a value of one at the surface to values of about 0.2–0.3 a few kilometers above the surface. Less expected, however, is the fact that random errors in the lower atmosphere also strongly depend on changes in air temperature biases at the surface. Warmer near-surface conditions lead to increased random errors for air temperature in the lower atmosphere, in association with the development of the deeper PBL, with greater spatial variability. This finding is of particular interest when evaluating new configurations of NWP systems for implementation in national meteorological and environmental prediction centers.

Abstract

At near-grounded glacier termini, calving can lead to the capsize of kilometer-scale unstable icebergs. The transient contact force applied by the capsizing iceberg on the glacier front generates seismic waves that propagate over teleseismic distances. The inversion of this seismic signal is of great interest to get insight into actual and past capsize dynamics. However, the iceberg size, which is of interest for geophysical and climatic studies, cannot be recovered from the seismic amplitude alone. This is because the capsize is a complex process involving interactions between the iceberg, the glacier and the surrounding water. This paper presents a first step towards the construction of a complete model, and is focused on the capsize in the open ocean without glacier front nor ice-m\'elange. The capsize dynamics of an iceberg in the open ocean is captured by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, which allows assessing the complexity of the fluid motion around a capsizing iceberg and how far the ocean is affected by iceberg rotation. Expressing the results in terms of appropriate dimensionless variables, we show that laboratory scale and field scale capsizes can be directly compared. The capsize dynamics is found to be highly sensitive to the iceberg aspect ratio and to the water and ice densities. However, dealing at the same time with the fluid dynamics and the contact between the iceberg and the deformable glacier front requires highly complex coupling that often goes beyond actual capabilities of fluid-structure interaction softwares. Therefore, we developed a semi-analytical simplified fluid-structure model (SAFIM) that can be implemented in solid mechanics computations dealing with contact dynamics of deformable solids. Abstract

Abstract Objectives to assess environmental and biological monitoring of exposure to organic solvents in a glue-manufacturing company in Sfax, Tunisia. Methods Exposure of volunteer workers, in the solvented glue-work-stations, in the control laboratory and in the storage rooms of the finished products, was assessed through indoor-air and urine measurements. Informed consent of the workers was obtained. Results and discussion The exposure indexes were found with high values in the solvented workshop as well as in the control laboratory and were respectively, 8.40 and 3.12. These indexes were also correlated with hexane and toluene indoor air concentrations. As to urine, the obtained results for the 2,5-hexandione and hippuric acid, metabolites of hexane and toluene, respectively, were in accord with the indoor-air measurements, with an average of 0.46 mg/l and 1240 mg/g of creatinine. Conclusion This study assessed for the first time biological exposure to organic solvents used in Tunisian adhesive industries. Although values are likely to underestimate true exposure levels, some figures exceed European and American occupational exposure guidelines.

Abstract

ObjectiveIL-1β is a leaderless cytokine with poorly known secretory mechanisms that is barely detectable in serum of patients, including those with an IL-1β-mediated disease such as systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA). Leukocyte microvesicles (MVs) may be a mechanism of IL-1β secretion. The first objective of our study was to characterize IL-1β-positive MVs obtained from macrophage cell culture supernatants and to investigate their biological functions in vitro and in vivo. The second objective was to detect circulating IL-1β-positive MVs in JIA patients.MethodsMVs were purified by serial centrifugations from PBMCs, or THP-1 differentiated into macrophages, then stimulated with LPS ± ATP. MV content was analyzed for the presence of IL-1β, NLRP3 inflammasome, caspase-1, P2X7 receptor, and tissue factor (TF) using ELISA, Western blot, or flow cytometry. MV biological properties were studied in vitro by measuring VCAM-1, ICAM-1, and E-selectin expression after HUVEC co-culture and factor-Xa generation test was realized. In vivo, MVs’ ability to recruit leukocytes in a murine model of peritonitis was evaluated. Plasmatic IL-1β-positive MVs were studied ex vivo in 10 active JIA patients using flow cytometry.ResultsTHP-1-derived macrophages stimulated with LPS and ATP released MVs, which contained NLRP3, caspase-1, and the 33-kDa precursor and 17-kDa mature forms of IL-1β and bioactive TF. IL-1β-positive MVs expressed P2X7 receptor and released soluble IL-1β in response to ATP stimulation in vitro. In mice, MVs induced a leukocyte peritoneal infiltrate, which was reduced by treatment with the IL-1 receptor antagonist. Finally, IL-1β-positive MVs were detectable in plasma from 10 active JIA patients.ConclusionMVs shed from activated macrophages contain IL-1β, NLRP3 inflammasome components, and TF, and constitute thrombo-inflammatory vectors that can be detected in the plasma from active JIA patients.

Abstract

Rapid urbanization and changing land use dynamics require robust tools for projecting and analyzing future land use scenarios to support sustainable urban development. This study introduces an integrated modeling framework that combines the Patch-generating Land Use Simulation (PLUS) model with Markov Chain (MC) analysis to simulate land use and land cover (LULC) changes for Montreal Island, Canada. This framework leverages historical data, scenario-based adjustments, and spatial drivers, providing urban planners and policymakers with a tool to evaluate the potential impacts of land use policies. Three scenarios—sustainable, industrial, and baseline—are developed to illustrate distinct pathways for Montreal's urban development, each reflecting different policy priorities and economic emphases. The integrated MC-PLUS model achieved a high accuracy level, with an overall accuracy of 0.970 and a Kappa coefficient of 0.963 when validated against actual land use data from 2020. The findings indicate that sustainable policies foster more contiguous green spaces, enhancing ecological connectivity, while industrial-focused policies promote the clustering of commercial and industrial zones, often at the expense of green spaces. This study underscores the model's potential as a valuable decision-support tool in urban planning, allowing for the scenario-driven exploration of LULC dynamics with high spatial precision. Abstract

The hydro-elastic response of a flexible NACA 0015 hydrofoil is investigated for both wetted and cavitating flow conditions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis are performed using a fully implicit coupling between the ISIS-CFD solver (developed by the METHRIC team at Ecole Centrale de-Nantes) and a modal approach for the structure. The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) solver is first validated for wetted and cavitating flow conditions around a similar rigid hydrofoil, with experimental results carried out at the hydrodynamic tunnel of the French Naval Academy, including lift and drag measurements and high speed camera images. Then the numerical predictions for the flexible hydrofoil response are compared with experimental bending shapes and vibrations amplitudes, with a focus on cavitating flow conditions. For wetted flow conditions, numerical results show a good agreement with the experiments, for both rigid and flexible hydrofoils. For cavitating flow conditions, the hydro-elastic response is dominated by vibrations at the hydrofoil modal frequencies and the reentrant jet instability frequency. For the lowest values of the cavitation number, a large amplitude peak is experimentally observed in the frequency response spectra, due to lock-in between the first modal frequency and the reentrant jet frequency. Strong harmonics of this dominant peak also appear in the spectra, revealing a nonlinear response of the hydrofoil. While the amplitudes of vibrations are well predicted by the computations, the frequency lock-in observed in the experiments is not captured by the numerical model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Iron excess has been proposed as an essential factor in skeletal muscle wasting. Studies have reported correlations between muscle iron accumulation and atrophy, either through ageing or by using experimental models of secondary iron overload. However, iron treatments performed in most of these studies induced an extra‐pathophysiological iron overload, more representative of intoxication or poisoning. The main objective of this study was to determine the impact of iron excess closer to pathophysiological conditions on structural and metabolic adaptations (i) in differentiated myotubes and (ii) in skeletal muscle exhibiting oxidative (i.e. the soleus) or glycolytic (i.e. the gastrocnemius) metabolic phenotypes. Methods The impact of iron excess was assessed in both in vitro and in vivo models. Murine differentiated myotubes were exposed to ferric ammonium citrate (FAC) (i.e. 10 and 50 μM) for the in vitro component.
