Abstract

There is a considerable number of research publications on the acoustical properties of porous media with an elastic frame. A simple search through the Web of ScienceTM (last accessed 21 March 2018) suggests that there are at least 819 publications which deal with the acoustics of poroelastic media. A majority of these researches require accurate knowledge of the elastic properties over a broad frequency range. However, the accuracy of the measurement of the dynamic elastic properties of poroelastic media has been a contentious issue. The novelty of this paper is that it studies the reproducibility of some popular experimental methods which are used routinely to measure the key elastic properties such as the dynamic Young's modulus, loss factor and Poisson ratio of poroelastic media. In this paper, fourteen independent sets of laboratory measurements were performed on specimens of the same porous materials. The results from these measurements suggest that the reproducibility of this type of experimental method is poor. This work can be helpful to suggest improvements which can be developed to harmonize the way the elastic properties of poroelastic media are measured worldwide.

10. Feasibility and acceptability of a systematic offer of HIV rapid testing to Family Planning Centers visitors by non-physician professionals in France.

Abstract

Background: The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) epidemic remains active among women in Europe, with significant missed opportunities for HIV testing. Although HIV testing falls within the scope of Family Planning Centers (FPCs), it is often not offered. This pilot study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of systematically offering HIV rapid testing by non-physician professionals, independent of medical appointments, to visitors and accompanying persons in FCPs. Methods: In September 2020, three FPCs in the Paris region were selected for a 6-month pilot based on high local HIV diagnosis rates among women and the absence of an existing HIV rapid testing offer. A dedicated midwife coordinated a certified training course for non-physician professionals, including group discussions on obstacles and facilitators for offering HIV rapid testing, education on HIV and the use of HIV rapid tests, and the development of procedures, including a standardized HIV questionnaire, to systematically offer HIV rapid testing. We measured participation rates in the study and acceptability of the HIV rapid testing offer. We analyzed visitor characteristics, HIV risk factors and knowledge about HIV. Results: All non-physician professionals across the three FPCs were trained. HIV rapid testing was systematically offered to 261 incoming visitors and accompanying persons from September 2020 to March 2021: 93% completed the questionnaire, and 91% accepted the HIV rapid testing offer; 63% reported prior HIV risk behaviors. Visitors born in North Africa had the least knowledge about HIV. Twenty-two visitors declined the testing offer, citing recent HIV testing, no perceived lack of risk, feeling unprepared, or fear of the outcome. Conclusion: The results demonstrate the feasibility and strong acceptability of systematically offering HIV rapid testing by non-physician professionals in large urban FPCs. Abstract

The fragmentations of the adducts resulting from the derivatization of nitrite ion by Griess method (formation of an azo compound) and 2,3-diaminonaphthalene (formation of 2,3-naphthotriazole (NAT)) were studied by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). The transition used for quantification was selected according to the highest value of the signal-over-blank ratio (S/B) obtained from each adduct fragmentation. When derivatizing nitrite ion labeled with the stable 15N isotope, followed by liquid chromatography (LC)-MS/MS measurement, the lowest limit of quantification obtained was 5 nM with NAT. The method was applied to study the intestinal permeability of S-nitrosoglutathione, a drug candidate for the chronic treatment of cardiovascular disease. This compound was labeled with 15N and its permeability was studied in an ex vivo rat intestine model using an Ussing chamber.

Abstract

The response of two isogenic Escherichia coli strains to oxygenation and starvation relative to resistance to chlorine and glutathione (GSH) synthesis has been studied. The E. coli mutant lacking in GSH was not more sensitive to the oxidant than the parent strain when the bacteria were cultured with low oxygen. Both starvation and oxygenation improved the resistance of the parent strain to chlorine. The resistance of the deficient strain was not changed.

Abstract

Introduction: The risk of extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) bacterial acquisition in patients with β-lactam allergy has been poorly investigated. In a previous study conducted over a 6-year long period (2007-2012), we found that patients with declared β-lactam allergy had a higher risk of ESBL bacterial carriage at admission in intensive care unit (ICU), but they had not a higher risk of ESBL bacterial acquisition. We present the final results of the study which was eventually conducted over a 12-year long period (2007-2018).Materials and Methods: The study included all patients admitted in ICU and receiving antibiotic treatment from January 2007 to December 2018. ESBL bacterial acquisition was the main clinical outcome. Mortality in ICU, multidrug resistant bacterial carriage at admission and discharge were the secondary outcomes.Results: Overall, 3332 patients were included, 132/3332 (3.9%) were labelled β-lactam allergic, while 3200/3332 (96.1%) did not presented β-lactam allergy. No significant difference in rates of ESBL acquisition was detected (4/132, 3% vs. 78/3200, 2.4%; p = 0.17). Patients with β-lactam allergy had higher rates of ESBL bacterial carriage at admission (19/132, 14.4% vs. 248/3200, 7.8%, p = 0.01) and at discharge (22/132, 16.7% vs. 351/3200, 11%, p = 0.04) than nonallergic patients. No differences in mortality, duration of hospitalization, and carriage of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus were reported. Female gender was the only factor associated with β-lactam allergy at the multivariate analysis.Conclusions: This study confirms that patients with declared β-lactam allergy had not a higher risk of ESBL bacterial acquisition during hospitalization in ICU. Background: Although numerous environmental factors are documented to influence serum retinol and [alpha]-tocopherol concentrations, little is known about the genetic versus the environmental contributions to variations in these traits. Objective: The aim of this study was to estimate additive genetic heritability and household effects for serum retinol and [alpha]-tocopherol concentrations in a variance component analysis. Design: In a sample of 387 French families, information on serum retinol and [alpha]-tocopherol concentrations, usual dietary intake, lifestyle, and serum lipid profiles and related polymorphisms (apolipoprotein E, apolipoprotein C-III, apolipoprotein B, cholesteryl ester transfer protein, and lipoprotein lipase) was obtained. Results: For serum retinol--after adjustment for sex, age, body mass index, alcohol consumption, oral contraceptive use, and serum albumin, triacylglycerol, and apolipoprotein A-I concentrations--additive genetic effects and shared common environment contributed 30.5% and 14.2% of the total variance, respectively. For serum [alpha]-tocopherol, [approximately equal to] 22.1% of the total variance was due to the additive effects of genes and 18.7% to those of household environment, after adjustment for the covariates sex, age, vitamin E intake, oral contraceptive use, and cholesterol, triacylglycerol, and apolipoprotein A-I concentrations. For both vitamins, the influence of measured polymorphisms was not significant. Moreover, heritability and household effect estimates were not significantly different between the 4 classes of relatives and did not vary significantly when families shared more meals at home. Conclusions: The results show that serum retinol and [alpha]-tocopherol concentrations are under genetic control in healthy families.
