Abstract

We present for the first time a study of the quasinormal modes of rapidly rotating Ellis-Bronnikov wormholes in General Relativity. We compute the spectrum of the wormholes using a spectral decomposition of the metric perturbations on a numerical background. We focus on the $M_z=2,3$ sector of the perturbations, and show that the triple isospectrality of the symmetric and static Ellis-Bronnikov wormhole is broken due to rotation, giving rise to a much richer spectrum than the spectrum of Kerr black holes. Abstract

We study the Skyrmion of the $SO(2)$ gauged $O(3)$ sigma model in $2+1$ dimensions in the presence of a Skyrme--Chern-Simons (SCS) term, and compare its properties with the corresponding properties of the Skyrmion in the presence of the usual Chern-Simons (CS) term. We find that these properties are qualitatively largely similar in both cases, meaning that the SCS density can be employed as an alternative to the CS term also in higher dimensions, most importantly in even dimensions where no CS term is defined, $e.g.,$ in $3+1$ dimensions. The SCS density employed here is defined in terms of the pair of $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ gauge fields and an auxiliary $O(5)$ Skyrme scalar, which is contracted to an effective $O(3)$ Skyrme scalar. 3. The role of the Callan-Witten anomaly density as a Chern-Simons term in Skyrme model

Abstract

We consider axially symmetric solutions of the U(1) gauged Skyrme model supplemented with a Callan-Witten (CW) anomaly density term. The main properties of the solutions are studied, several specific features introduced by the presence of the CW term being identified. We find that the solitons possess a nonzero angular momentum proportional to the electric charge, which in addition to the usual Coulomb part, acquires an extra (topological) contribution from the CW term. Specifically, it is shown that the slope of mass/energy $M$ $vs.$ electric charge $Q_e$ and angular momentum $J$ can be both positive $and$ negative. Furthermore, it is shown that the gauged Skyrmion persists even when the quartic (Skyrme) kinetic term disappears., Comment: 25 pages, 3 figures

5. Left ventricular remodeling in perimenopausal women

Abstract

Aim to reveal specific features of the left ventricle (LV) structural and functional state and the pro-inflammatory status indicators in women of perimenopausal age. Material and methods. The cross-sectional study included 80 women (age 45 to 55 years) who were divided into 2 groups: a menopausal transition group and an early postmenopausal group according to the STRAW + 10 classification. Anthropometric measurements were taken; blood tests for homocysteine C, interleukin-6 (IL6), C-reactive protein (CRP), and echocardiography were performed according to the standard technique. Results. The study findings were as follows: 1. women in early postmenopause had higher levels of CRP when compared with women in the menopausal transition (4.5 (1.5; 8.0) mg/l versus 2.5 (0.6; 7.4) mg/l), in obese women, the level of IL6 was higher than in normal-weight women regardless of menopausal status (1.8 (0.6; 2.8) pg/ml versus 0.6 (0.2; 1.3) pg/ml); 2. the distribution of participants according to the type of myocardial remodeling did not differ in the comparison groups; 3. the presence of arterial hypertension and menopause was associated with myocardial hypertrophy; 4. significant differences were found in the distribution of myocardial geometry in women with obesity and overweight when compared to women with a normal body mass index (BMI) regardless of menopausal status; 5. significant direct correlation was registered between the structural and volume parameters of the LV and age, blood pressure, BMI, waist to hips circumference ratio. A positive correlation was found between the level of pro-inflammatory biomarkers and structural parameters of LV. Conclusion. In women of perimenopausal age, a myocardial remodeling was revealed that could not be explained by traditional risk factors. The activation of the systemic inflammatory response in menopause and obesity was accompanied by the pathological LV remodeling and myocardial hypertrophy.

7. On the effects of the Chern-Simons term in an Abelian gauged Skyrme model in $d=4+1$ dimensions

Abstract

We study an Abelian gauged $O(5)$ Skyrme model in $4+1$ dimensions, featuring the $F^4$ Maxwell and the Chern-Simons terms. Our aim is to expose the mechanism, discovered in the analogous Abelian gauged $O(3)$ Skyrme model in $2+1$ dimensions, which leads to the unusual relation of the mass-energy $E$ to the electric charge $Q_e$ and angular momentum $J$, and, to the change in the value of the "baryon number" $q$ due to the influence of the Abelian field on the Skyrmion. Chern-Simons dynamics together with the dynamics of the gauged Skyrme scalar, allows for solutions with varying asymptotic values of the magnetic field, resulting in these unusual properties listed. 8. $SO(2)$ gauged Skyrmions in $4+1$ dimensions

Abstract

We study the simplest $SO(2)$ gauged $O(5)$ Skyrme models in $4+1$ (flat) dimensions. In the gauge decoupled limit, the model supports topologically stable solitons (Skyrmions) and after gauging, the static energy of the solutions is bounded from below by a "baryon number". The studied model features both Maxwell and Maxwell--Chern-Simons dynamics. The considered configurations are subject to bi-azimuthal symmetry in the ${\mathbb R}^4$ subspace resulting in a two dimensional subsystem, as well as subject to an enhanced symmetry relating the two planes in the ${\mathbb R}^4$ subspace, which results in a one dimensional subsystem. Numerical solutions are constructed in both cases. In the purely magnetic case, fully bi-azimuthal solutions were given, while electrically charged and spinning solutions were constructed only in the radial (enhanced symmetric) case, both in the presence of a Chern-Simons term, and in its absence. Vortices the $SO(2)$ gauged planar Skyrme model, with a) only Maxwell, b) only Chern-Simons, and c) both Maxwell and Chern-Simons dynamics are studied systematically. In cases a) and b), where both models feature a single parameter $\lambda$ (the coupling of the potential term), the dependence of the energy on $\lambda$ is analysed. It is shown that the plots of the energy $vs.$ $\lambda$ feature discontinuities and branches. In case c), the emphasis is on the evolution of the topological charge, taking non-integer values. The question of the dependence of the topological charge $q$ of a gauged Skyrmion, on the gauge field, is studied quantitatively. Two examples, both gauged with $SO(2)$ are studied and contrasted: i) The $O(3)$ model in $2+1$ dimensions, and ii) The $O(4)$ model in $3+1$ dimensions. In case i), where the (usual) Chern-Simons (CS) term is present, the value of $q$ changes sign, going through zero. This evolution is tracked by a parameter characterising the solutions in the given theory. 19. Perimenopause and the state of diastolic function of the left ventricle in women

Abstract

Aim to study the features of the diastolic function of the left ventricle, taking into account the gynecological history in women of perimenopausal age. Material and methods. A single-stage cross-sectional study included 75 women aged 45 to 55 years. All women were examined, their anamnesis, including gynecological, was taken and gynecological status was established. Relying on echocardiography data, the women were divided into a group with normal left ventricular diastolic function and a group with diastolic dysfunction. Lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, the concentration of follicle-stimulating hormone were evaluated in all women. Results. Study showed that women with detected type 1 diastolic dysfunction were older than women with normal diastolic heart function. In women with diastolic dysfunction, hypertension and negative metabolic indicators were more common; they were characterized by a greater number of pregnancies and abortions, if compared to women with unchanged heart function, in addition, they were more likely to be in early menopause. Conclusion. Diastolic dysfunction is widespread in perimenopausal women, which is not always explained by traditional risk factors. There is a relationship between gynecological history and the development of diastolic dysfunction, but the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying this process in women remain unclear.

20. Squashed, magnetized black holes in $D=5$ minimal gauged supergravity

Abstract

We construct a new class of black hole solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with a negative cosmological constant. These configurations are cohomogeneity-1, with two equal-magnitude angular momenta. In the generic case, they possess a non-vanishing magnetic potential at infinity with a boundary metric which is the product of time and a squashed three-dimensional sphere. Both extremal and non-extremal black holes are studied. The non-extremal black holes satisfying a certain relation between electric charge, angular momenta and magnitude of the magnetic potential at infinity do not trivialize in the limit of vanishing event horizon size, becoming particle-like (non-topological) solitonic configurations. Abstract

Black holes in 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons (EMCS) theory and their intriguing properties are discussed. For the special case of the CS coupling constant $\lambda=\lambda_{SG}$, as obtained from supergravity, a closed form solution is known for the rotating black holes. Beyond this supergravity value, the EMCS black hole solutions can e.g. exhibit nonuniqueness and form sequences of radially excited solutions. In the presence of a negative cosmological constant the black holes can possess an extra-parameter corresponding to a magnetic flux in addition to the mass, electric charge and angular momenta. This latter family of black holes possesses also a solitonic limit. Abstract

We study the effect of a Chern-Simons term on the electrically charged and spinning solitons of several $U(1)$ gauged models in $2+1$ dimensions. These are vortices of complex scalar field theories, both with and without symmetry breaking dynamics, and the $O(3)$ Skyrme model. In all cases the gauge decoupling limits are also considered. It is well known that the effect of the Chern-Simons dynamics is to endow vortices with electric charge $Q_e$ and spin $J$, but our main aim here is to reveal a new feature: that the mass-energy $E$ of the electrically charged vortex can be lower than that of the electrically neutral one, in contrast to the usual monotonic increase of $E$ with $Q_e$. These effects of Chern-Simons dynamics were observed previously in $3+1$ dimensional systems, and the present results can be viewed as corroborating the latter. Moreover, the usual energy-spin relationship is likewise altered. Abstract

Background: The changes in shield strategies, treatments, emergence variants, and healthcare pathways might shift the profile and outcome of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in successive waves of the outbreak. Methods: We retrospectively analysed the characteristics and in-hospital outcomes of all patients admitted with COVID-19 in eight university hospitals of Catalonia (North-East Spain) between Feb 28, 2020 and Feb 28, 2021. Using a 7-joinpoint regression analysis, we split admissions into four waves. The main hospital outcomes included 30-day mortality and admission to intensive care unit (ICU). Findings: The analysis included 17,027 subjects admitted during the first wave (6800; 39.9%), summer wave (1807; 10.6%), second wave (3804; 22.3%), and third wave (4616; 27.1%). The highest 30-day mortality rate was reported during the first wave (17%) and decreased afterwards, remaining stable at 13% in the second and third waves (overall 30% reduction); the lowest mortality was reported during the summer wave (8%, 50% reduction). ICU admission became progressively more frequent during successive waves. In Cox regression analysis, the main factors contributing to differences in 30-day mortality were the epidemic wave, followed by gender, age, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and neoplasms. Interpretation: Although in-hospital COVID-19 mortality remains high, it decreased substantially after the first wave and is highly dependent of patient's characteristics and ICU availability. Highest mortality reductions occurred during a wave characterized by younger individuals, an increasingly frequent scenario as vaccination campaigns progress. Abstract

We consider rotating black hole solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with a negative cosmological constant and a generic value of the Chern-Simons coupling constant $\lambda$. Using both analytical and numerical techniques, we focus on cohomogeneity-1 configurations, with two equal-magnitude angular momenta, which approach at infinity a globally AdS background. We find that the generic solutions share a number of basic properties with the known Cvetic, L\"u and Pope black holes which have $\lambda=1$. New features occur as well, for example, when the Chern-Simons coupling constant exceeds a critical value, the solutions are no longer uniquely determined by their global charges. Moreover, the black holes possess radial excitations which can be labelled by the node number of the magnetic gauge potential function. Solutions with small values of $\lambda$ possess other distinct features. Abstract

We here review asymptotically flat rotating black holes in the presence of non-Abelian gauge fields. Like their static counterparts these black holes are no longer uniquely determined by their global charges. In the case of pure SU(2) Yang-Mills fields, the rotation generically induces an electric charge, while the black holes do not carry a magnetic charge. When a Higgs field is coupled, rotating black holes with monopole hair arise in the case of a Higgs triplet, while in the presence of a complex Higgs doublet the black holes carry sphaleron hair. Abstract

We study the generalization of the Kerr-Newmann black hole in 5D Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with free Chern-Simons coupling parameter. These black holes possess equal magnitude angular momenta and an event horizon of spherical topology. We focus on the extremal case with zero temperature. We find that, when the Chern-Simons coupling is greater than two times the supergravity case, new branches of black holes are found which violate uniqueness. In particular, a sequence of these black holes are non-static radially excited solutions with vanishing angular momentum. They approach the Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution as the excitation level increases., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We investigate axial quasi-normal modes of realistic neutron stars in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-dilaton gravity. We consider 8 realistic equations of state containing nuclear, hyperonic, and hybrid matter. We focus on the fundamental curvature mode and compare the results with those of pure Einstein theory. We observe that the frequency of the modes is increased by the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet-dilaton, while the impact on the damping time is typically smaller. Interestingly, we obtain that universal relations valid in pure Einstein theory still hold for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-dilaton gravity, and we propose a method to use these phenomenological relations to constrain the value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Rotating black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory possess remarkable features, when the Chern-Simons coupling constant reaches a critical value. Representing single asymptotically flat black holes with horizons of spherical topology, they exhibit non-uniqueness. In particular, there even exist extremal and non-extremal black holes with the same sets of global charges. Both extremal and non-extremal black holes form sequences of radially excited solutions, that can be labeled by the node number of the magnetic gauge potential function. The extremal Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution is no longer always located on the boundary of the domain of existence of these black holes, and it neither remains the single extremal solution with vanishing angular momentum. Instead a whole sequence of rotating extremal $J=0$ solutions is present, whose mass converges towards the mass of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution. These radially excited extremal solutions are all associated with the same near horizon solution. Abstract

We study spherically symmetric finite energy solutions of two Higgs-Chern-Simons--Yang-Mills-Higgs (HCS-YMH) models in $3+1$ dimensions, one with gauge group $SO(5)$ and the other with $SU(3)$. The Chern-Simons (CS) densities are defined in terms of both the Yang-Mills (YM) and Higgs fields and the choice of the two gauge groups is made so they do not vanish. The solutions of the $SO(5)$ model carry only electric charge and zero magnetic charge, while the solutions of the $SU(3)$ model are dyons carrying both electric and magnetic charges like the Julia-Zee (JZ) dyon. Unlike the latter however, the electric charge in both models receives an important contribution from the CS dynamics. We pay special attention to the relation between the energies and charges of these solutions. In contrast with the electrically charged JZ dyon of the Yang-Mills-Higgs (YMH) system, whose mass is larger than that of the electrically neutral (magnetic monopole) solutions, the masses of the electrically charged solutions of our HCS-YMH models can be smaller than their electrically neutral counterparts in some parts of the parameter space. To establish this is the main task of this work, which is performed by constructing the HCS-YMH solutions numerically. In the case of the $SU(3)$ HCS-YMH, we have considered the question of angular momentum, and it turns out that it vanishes., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Cough is a frequent symptom in many common respiratory diseases and is considered a predictor of early exacerbation or even disease progression. Continuous cough monitoring offers valuable insights into treatment effectiveness, aiding healthcare providers in timely intervention to prevent exacerbations and hospitalizations. Objective cough monitoring methods have emerged as superior alternatives to subjective methods like questionnaires. In recent years, cough has been monitored using wearable devices equipped with microphones. However, the discrimination of cough sounds from background noise has been shown a particular challenge. This study aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of single-axis acceleration signals combined with state-of-the-art deep learning (DL) algorithms to distinguish intentional coughing from sounds like speech, laugh, or throat noises. Various DL methods (recurrent, convolutional, and deep convolutional neural networks) combined with one- and two-dimensional time and time–frequency representations, such as the signal envelope, kurtogram, wavelet scalogram, mel, Bark, and the equivalent rectangular bandwidth spectrum (ERB) spectrograms, were employed to identify the most effective approach. The optimal strategy, which involved the SqueezeNet model in conjunction with wavelet scalograms, yielded an accuracy and precision of 92.21% and 95.59%, respectively. The proposed method demonstrated its potential for cough monitoring. Future research will focus on validating the system in spontaneous coughing of subjects with respiratory diseases under natural ambulatory conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

41. Generalized dyons and magnetic dipoles: the issue of angular momentum

Abstract

It is known that a non-Abelian magnetic monopole cannot rotate globally (although it may possess a nonzero angular momentum density). At the same time, the total angular momentum of a magnetic dipole equals the electric charge. In this work we question the generality of these results by considering a number of generalizations of the Georgi-Glashow model. We study two different types of finite energy, regular configurations: solutions with net magnetic charge and monopole-antimonopole pairs with zero net magnetic charge. These configurations are endowed with an electric charge and carry also a nonvanishing angular momentum density. However, we argue that the qualitative results found in the Georgi-Glashow model are generic and thus a magnetic monopole cannot spin as long as the matter fields feature the usual "monopole" asymptotic behaviour independently of the dynamics of the model. A study of the properties of the dyons and magnetic dipoles in some generalizations of the Georgi-Glashow model supplemented with higher order Skyrme-like terms in the gauge curvature and Higgs fields is given quantitatively., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

We study spherically symmetric solutions of an $SO(5)$ Chern-Simons--Yang-Mills-Higgs system in $3+1$ dimensions. The Chern-Simons densities are defined in terms of both Yang-Mills fields and a $5$-component isomultiplet Higgs. The $SO(3)\times{SO(2)}$ solutions are analysed in a systematic way, by employing numerical methods. These finite energy configurations possess both electric and magnetic global charges, differing radically, however, from Julia-Zee dyons. Abstract

We investigate rotating Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMd) black holes in odd dimensions. Focusing on black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta, we determine the domain of existence of these black holes. Non-extremal black holes reside with the boundaries determined by the static and the extremal rotating black holes. The extremal EMd black holes show proportionality of their horizon area and their angular momenta. Thus the charge does not enter. We also address the Einstein-Maxwell case, where the extremal rotating black holes exhibit two branches. On the branch emerging from the Myers-Perry solutions their angular momenta are proportional to their horizon area, whereas on the branch emerging from the static solutions their angular momenta are proportional to their horizon angular momenta. Only subsets of the near-horizon solutions are realized globally. Investigating the physical properties of these EMd black holes, we note that one can learn much about the extremal rotating solutions from the much simpler static solutions. The angular momenta of the extremal black holes are proportional to the area of the static ones for the Kaluza-Klein value of the dilaton coupling constant, and remain analogous for other values. The same is found for the horizon angular velocities of the extremal black holes, which possess an analogous behavior to the surface gravity of the static black holes. The gyromagnetic ratio is rather well approximated by the `static' value, obtained perturbatively for small angular momenta., Comment: 40 pages, 10 figures

In Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory the extremal Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution is no longer the single extremal solution with vanishing angular momentum, when the Chern-Simons coupling constant reaches a critical value. Instead a whole sequence of rotating extremal J=0 solutions arises, labeled by the node number of the magnetic U(1) potential. Associated with the same near horizon solution, the mass of these radially excited extremal solutions converges to the mass of the extremal Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution. We investigate the axial w quasi-normal modes of neutron stars for 18 realistic equations of state in order to study the influence of hyperons and quarks on the modes. The study has been developed with a new method based on Exterior Complex Scaling with variable angle, which allow us to generate pure outgoing quasi-normal modes. A complete study of the junction conditions has been done. Abstract

In this paper we analyze the quasi-normal mode spectrum of realistic neutron stars by studying the polar modes. In particular we study the spatial wI mode, the f mode, and the fundamental p mode. The study has been done for 15 different equations of state containing exotic matter and satisfying the $2 M_{\odot}$ constraint. Since f and p modes couple to matter perturbations, the influence of the presence of hyperons and quarks in the core of the neutron stars is more significant than for the axial component. We present phenomenological relations for the frequency and damping time with the compactness of the neutron star. We also consider new phenomenological relations between the frequency and damping time of the w mode and the f mode. These new relations are independent of the equation of state, and could be used to estimate the central pressure, mass or radius, and eventually constrain the equation of state of neutron stars. Abstract

We have constructed numerically non-Abelian vortices in an SU(2) Chern-Simons-Higgs theory with a quartic Higgs potential. We have analyzed these solutions in detail by means of improved numerical codes and found some unexpected features we did not find when a sixth-order Higgs potential was used. The generic non-Abelian solutions have been generated by using their corresponding Abelian counterparts as initial guess. Typically, the energy of the non-Abelian solutions is lower than that of the corresponding Abelian one (except in certain regions of the parameter space). Regarding the angular momentum, the Abelian solutions possess the maximal value, although there exist non-Abelian solutions which reach that maximal value too. In order to classify the solutions it is useful to consider the non-Abelian solutions with asymptotically vanishing $A_t$ component of the gauge potential, which may be labelled by an integer number $m$. For vortex number $n=3$ and above, we have found uniqueness violation: two different non-Abelian solutions with all the global charges equal. Finally, we have investigated the limit of infinity Higgs self-coupling parameter and found a piecewise Regge-like relation between the energy and the angular momentum., Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures
