BackgroundIn 2009, Gary and colleagues reviewed prior research examining racial and ethnic differences in outcomes after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Over the past 15 years, advances in research and changes in the demographic composition of the United States warrant a comprehensive understanding of racial and ethnic disparities after TBI. ObjectiveA systematic review will be conducted to examine racial and ethnic differences in TBI outcomes from 2009 to 2023. MethodsPreliminary searches and study screening processes will identify relevant English-language articles published from January 2009 to December 2023 using the CINAHL, Gale OneFile, PsycINFO (Ovid), and PubMed electronic databases. Relevant articles will include quantitative or mixed method approaches, involve individuals with TBI or their caregivers, and compare 2 or more groups by race or ethnicity on post-TBI outcomes. Quality will be assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. This systematic review protocol was developed following PRISMA-P (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols) guidelines. Results will be summarized, and a subgroup analysis may be conducted based on demographics (eg, age, gender, or sex). ResultsWe have already identified abstracts using the search strategy for all 4 of the included electronic databases. We recently updated the search and will begin abstract screening of the additional abstracts identified from the last search completed in January 2024. This systematic review is anticipated to be completed by fall 2024, and its findings will be disseminated to the scientific community, persons with TBI, caregivers, and the lay audience. ConclusionsThis systematic review will advance our understanding regarding outcome disparities among minoritized individuals with TBI, examine progress over the past 15 years in minimizing barriers encountered by these racial and ethnic groups, and provide professionals with a roadmap illustrating existing gaps in rehabilitation care, making way for further development and implementation of evidence-based interventions to improve health equity in TBI outcomes. Urban greenspaces are vital refugia for insect biodiversity, but seasonal fluctuation responses of insect taxa to urbanisation and local attributes of urban greenspaces are not well known. Regions with mild temperate climates and winter-flowering plants have active winter pollinators that are often neglected. A thorough knowledge of the seasonally fluctuating ecological needs of insects is essential for adequate insect-friendly greenspace management. Hover flies are cosmopolitan inhabitants of urban greenspaces where they provide multiple critical ecosystem services such as pollination and pest control. Our study uses a multi-scale approach to determine the seasonal effects of urbanisation on hover fly richness, abundance, and assemblages in urban greenspaces. We selected 30 sites along an urbanisation gradient (as measured by human population density) in Sydney, Australia, and sampled each site over a year across seasons. We found that hover fly species richness was higher in winter and spring than in summer, while abundance was highest in winter and lowest in summer. Our results also show that a combination urbanisation and local attributes of urban greenspaces (flower richness, flower abundance, human population density, and proportion of native flowers) combined to affect hover fly species richness and abundance in seasonally dependant ways. Hover flies are especially abundant and diverse during winter- a time of the year when other native floral visitors are less active. Thus, hover flies may be important pollinators of the large community of winter-flowering plants in Australia. Urban greenspaces can be made more hospitable to hover flies by implementing simple management initiatives, such as complementing native floral resources with non-native flowers in periods of scarcity.

Bees play a key role in maintaining healthy terrestrial ecosystems by pollinating plants. Stingless bees (Apidae: Meliponini) are a diverse clade of social bees (>500 species) with a pantropical distribution spanning South and Central America, Africa, India, Australia and Asia. They are garnering increasing attention as commercially-beneficial pollinators of some crops, yet their contribution to the pollination of native plants in the tropics and subtropics remains poorly understood. Here we conduct a global review of the plants visited by stingless bees. We compile a database of reported associations (flower visits) between stingless bees and plants, from studies that have made either direct observations of foraging bees or analysed the pollen stored in nests. Worldwide, we find stingless bees have been reported to visit the flowers of plants from at least 221 different families and 1476 genera, with frequently reported interactions for many of the tropic’s most species-diverse plant families including Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Rubiaceae, Malvaceae, Lamiaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Arecaceae, Poaceae, Apocynaceae and Melastomataceae. The list of commonly-visited plant families was similar for the stingless bee fauna of each of three major biogeographic regions (Neotropical, Afrotropical and Indo-Malayan-Australasian), though we detected differences in the proportional use of plant families by the stingless bees of the Indo-Malayan-Australasian and Neotropical regions, likely reflecting differences in the available flora of those regions. Stingless bees in all regions visit a range of exotic species in their preferred plant families (crops, ornamental plants and weeds), in addition to native plants. Although most reports of floral visitation on wild plants do not confirm effective pollen transfer, it is likely that stingless bees make at least some contribution to pollination for the majority of plants they visit. In all, our database supports the view that stingless bees play an important role in the ecosystems of the global tropics and subtropics as pollinators of an exceptionally large and diverse number of plants. This database also highlights important gaps in our knowledge of stingless bee resource use that may help focus future research efforts.

Urbanisation is a leading cause of global biodiversity loss, imposing the most rapid and ecologically damaging impacts of any human driven land-use change. Despite the trend of biodiversity decline, urban nature provides many health, wellbeing and workplace productivity benefits to city dwellers. Hence, there is an urgent need to return nature to cities not only to conserve biodiversity, but also to maintain human experiences of nature. To meet this challenge, there are currently significant global attempts to re-green cities to improve environmental condition, including restoring habitat for biodiversity. However, many barriers to widespread implementation still exist, including competition for limited space, a lack of technical capacity, and a disengaged community. New approaches to urban restoration are urgently needed that suit the small fragments of space available, and that can deliver multiple benefits not only to conserve urban biodiversity but also to reconnect people with nature. To overcome these challenges, an 'ecology with cities' perspective, combining horticultural, ecological and social approaches to urban habitat management and restoration, is needed. Significant opportunities exist for urban ecologists and zoologists to engage with practitioners and the community to co-develop and implement approaches to successfully achieve the aim of creating biodiverse urban environments. Summary This study aimed to examine the improvement in performance and functional magnetic resonance imaging correlates of motor learning after a daytime nap versus a period of resting wakefulness among individuals with traumatic brain injury. A sample of 32 individuals with traumatic brain injury was randomly assigned to a Sleep (N = 17) or Wake (N = 15) group after a period of training on a motor sequential learning task. A 45‐min nap opportunity was provided for the Sleep group, while the Wake group watched a documentary for 45 min. Performance at the end of training was compared with their performance after the nap or wake intervention. Before and after the intervention, the motor sequential learning task was completed in the magnetic resonance imaging scanner to examine the relationship between change in performance and neural activation. Participants in the Sleep group showed significant gains from the end of training to after the intervention, whereas the Wake group did not. The functional magnetic resonance imaging results showed that relative to the Wake group, the Sleep group showed significantly decreased activation post‐intervention in the anterior cingulate/paracingulate, cerebellum, cuneus/precuneus, and inferior parietal lobule including angular and supramarginal gyri. Importantly, across both groups, increased task performance at post‐intervention was associated with decreased activation in the anterior cingulate/paracingulate and cerebellum. This study demonstrated the enhancing effect of a nap on motor learning performance in a sample of individuals with traumatic brain injury, with patterns of neural activation suggesting that the sequence was more automatized in the Sleep group. Strategic placement of a nap after an intense period of motor learning in the medical rehabilitation setting may have important implications for maximizing recovery after traumatic brain injury. Objective: To examine whether exposure to high-risk events causing injury to the head or neck has an effect on neurobehavioral symptoms in the absence of an alteration of consciousness in Spanish-speakers. Setting: Web-based survey. Participants: Seven hundred forty-eight individuals from Spain and Latin America, aged 18 to 65 years, with 10 years or more of education. Thirty-nine participants failed quality checks and were excluded. Seven hundred nine participants were included in the analyses. Design: Cross-sectional study. Subconcussive exposure was defined as endorsing exposure to one or more high-risk scenarios in the absence of any alteration of consciousness. Three injury groups were derived: No Head Injury, Subconcussive Exposure, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The Subconcussive Exposure group was further divided into Single and Multiple Exposures. Two analyses were conducted: the effect of lifetime exposure to injury (No Head Injury, Subconcussive Exposure, TBI) on neurobehavioral symptoms; the effect of Subconcussive Exposure Frequency (No Head Injury, Single Exposure, Multiple Exposures) on neurobehavioral symptoms. Main Measures: Spanish Ohio State University Traumatic Brain Injury Identification Method Self-Administered-Brief (OSU TBI-ID SAB); Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NSI). Results: There was a significant effect for Injury group on the NSI partial eta-squared (ηp² = 0.053) and a significant effect of Exposure Frequency group on the NSI (ηp2 = 0.40). Individuals with subconcussive exposures reported significantly more neurobehavioral symptoms than those with no history of head injury and significantly less symptoms than those with TBI. Individuals with multiple subconcussive exposures reported significantly more neurobehavioral symptoms than those with single and no exposure. Conclusion: This research expands the utility of the OSU-TBI-ID SAB as a lifetime TBI history assessment tool to one capable of evaluating subconcussive exposure dosing effects in Spanish- speakers. Such an index may facilitate establishment of subconcussive exposure prevalence rates worldwide, leading to improved understanding of the chronic effects of high-risk exposures. BACKGROUND: Hispanics/Latinos are the largest racial/ethnic group among underrepresented populations in the U.S. and multiple sociodemographic, cultural, and linguistic factors have been found to impact their performances on cognitive testing. Despite this, few normative data are available for the heterogeneous Spanish-speaking population in the U.S. OBJECTIVE: To generate normative data on the Trail-Making Test (TMT), Bells Test, Symbol-Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), and the Brief Test of Attention (BTA) for Spanish speakers residing in the U.S. METHODS: The sample included 245 Spanish-speaking individuals aged 18– 80 from eight states across the U.S. (California, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, New Jersey, Oregon, Virginia, and Wisconsin). Participants were administered attention and processing speed measures as part of a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. We used a Bayesian regression approach to estimate normative data, including covariates found to be important for predicting performances on measures of attention and processing speed. RESULTS: Sociodemographic factors including education, time in the U.S., acculturation, age, and/or sex had differential effects on the TMT-A, TMT-B, SDMT, and the BTA whereas the Bells Test was not influenced by any of these sociodemographic factors. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that while sex, age, and educational attainment are important factors to consider, language and acculturation can also influence attention and processing speed performances among Spanish speakers in the U.S. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Linguistic deficits are common across neurological and neurodegenerative disorders. Currently there are limited neuropsychological norms available for Spanish-speaking adults residing in the U.S. OBJECTIVE: To generate norms for two verbal fluency tests and the Boston Naming Test (BNT) in a Spanish-speaking population in the U.S., with adjustments for demographic and cultural variables. METHODS: The sample consisted of 245 adults from the U.S. Participants completed phonological and semantic verbal fluency tests and the BNT. A standardized four-step statistical procedure was used. RESULTS: For the phoneme F, interactions between Spanish proficiency, age, and education arose. Better performance on phonemes A, S, and M was related to education. Spanish proficiency, acculturation, and time in the U.S. were associated with the phonemes S, A, P, M, and R. An age by education interaction was found for phonemes M and R. The FAS and PMR triads were related to age, sex, time in U.S., and Spanish proficiency. For the semantic verbal fluency tests, an interaction between education and Spanish proficiency arose. For the BNT, test scores were related to education, and significant interactions were also found based on education's interaction with Spanish proficiency and acculturation. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the importance of accounting for sociodemographic and acculturative factors when developing normative data for verbal fluency tests and the BNT for dominant Spanish-speaking adults in the U.S. These sociodemographically-adjusted norms will help improve accuracy of diagnosis and interpretation of linguistic test performance in Spanish speakers living in the U.S. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCFT) and the Clock Drawing Test (CDT) are commonly used in clinical practice. The ROCFT measures constructional praxis, visual perception, and visuospatial learning and memory, and the CDT assesses for visuospatial, constructional, and executive difficulties. Several neurological disorders are associated with visuospatial and visuo-constructional impairments, yet reliable normative data accounting for sociodemographic and acculturative variables are scarce for Hispanics living in the U.S. OBJECTIVE: To generate normative data for the ROCFT and CDT in a Spanish-speaking adult population living in the U.S. METHODS: The sample consisted of 245 cognitively healthy adults recruited from several states in the U.S. Each participant was administered the ROCFT and CDT as part of a larger cognitive battery. The ROCFT and CDT were normed using a Bayesian approach. Age, age2, education, sex, acculturation, and language proficiency were included as predictors in the analyses. RESULTS: ROCFT performance was associated with education and age, particularly as they interacted with Spanish language proficiency and time spent in the U.S. Education was significantly associated with recall abilities and a lower memory recall on the ROCFT. Age was found to vary depending on a person's bilingual abilities. Sex did not emerge as a predictor of performance, and it did not interact significantly with other variables. CONCLUSION: This is the first study to include acculturation and language proficiency variables in the creation of norms for the assessment of visuo-constructional abilities. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between assistive technology workplace accommodation (AT-WA) usage and employment status among racial/ethnic populations with disabilities. Chi-square tests and logistic regression were used to analyze secondary data from the 2015 Kessler Foundation National Employment and Disability Survey (KFNEDS). Results indicated that significantly more consumers who used AT-WA were currently working, and a significantly greater proportion of them were White. Moreover, a significantly lower proportion of those who did not use AT-WA had less expected odds of being currently employed. Specific implications are discussed to inform practices, policy, and/or future research. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic relevance of β-catenin expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and to explore relationships with the tumor immune microenvironment. Expression of β-catenin and PD-L1, as well as lymphocyte and macrophage densities, were evaluated by immunohistochemistry in 125 OSCC patient specimens. Membranous β-catenin expression was detected in 102 (81.6%) and nuclear β-catenin in 2 (1.6%) tumors. There was an association between β-catenin expression, tumoral, and stromal CD8+ T-cell infiltration (TIL) and also the type of tumor immune microenvironment (TIME). Tumors harboring nuclear β-catenin were associated with a type II TIME (i.e., immune ignorance defined by a negative PD-L1 expression and low CD8+ TIL density), whereas tumors with membranous β-catenin expression were predominantly type IV (i.e., immune tolerance defined by negative PD-L1 and high CD8+ TIL density). Combined, but not individual, high stromal CD8+ TILs and membranous β-catenin expression was independently associated with better disease-specific survival (HR = 0.48, p = 0.019). Taken together, a combination of high stromal CD8+ T-cell infiltration and membranous β-catenin in the tumor emerges as an independent predictor of better survival in OSCC patients.

PurposeThe aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of preoperative inflammatory markers in peripheral blood of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), and to establish correlations with the infiltrate of macrophages and lymphocytes in the local immune tumor microenvironment (TME).Materials and MethodsNeutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) were retrospectively evaluated in a cohort of 348 OSCC patients, and correlated with overall (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS). Immunohistochemical analysis of tumoral and stromal infiltration of CD8+, CD4+, FOXP3+ and CD20+ lymphocytes and CD68+ and CD163+ macrophages was performed in a subset of 119 OSCC patient samples, and correlations further assessed.ResultsNLR, SII, and LMR were significantly associated with a poorer OS in univariate analysis; however, only NLR remained a significant independent predictor in the multivariate analysis (HR = 1.626, p = 0.04). NLR and SII were inversely and significantly correlated with stromal infiltration of CD8+, CD4+, and CD20+ lymphocytes. Moreover, a significant correlation between LMR was also found to significantly associate with stromal infiltration of CD8+, CD4+, and CD20+ lymphocytes, stromal CD68+ and CD163+ macrophages, and also tumoral infiltration of CD4+ and CD20+ lymphocytes.ConclusionsPreoperative NLR, SII, and LMR may serve as valuable systemic markers to predict OSCC patient survival, with NLR emerging as an independent predictor of poor OS. Moreover, strong significant correlations were exclusively observed between systemic inflammatory markers and the local stromal infiltration of lymphocytes in the TME.

Machine learning has been proposed as an alternative to theoretical modeling when dealing with complex problems in biological physics. However, in this perspective, we argue that a more successful approach is a proper combination of these two methodologies. We discuss how ideas coming from physical modeling neuronal processing led to early formulations of computational neural networks, e.g., Hopfield networks. We then show how modern learning approaches like Potts models, Boltzmann machines, and the transformer architecture are related to each other, specifically, through a shared energy representation. We summarize recent efforts to establish these connections and provide examples on how each of these formulations integrating physical modeling and machine learning have been successful in tackling recent problems in biomolecular structure, dynamics, function, evolution, and design. Instances include protein structure prediction; improvement in computational complexity and accuracy of molecular dynamics simulations; better inference of the effects of mutations in proteins leading to improved evolutionary modeling and finally how machine learning is revolutionizing protein engineering and design. Going beyond naturally existing protein sequences, a connection to protein design is discussed where synthetic sequences are able to fold to naturally occurring motifs driven by a model rooted in physical principles. Objective: To examine the associations between health literacy and health outcomes among individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) at least a year post-injury. Setting: Community following discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. Participants: A total of 205 individuals with complicated mild to severe TBI who completed a TBI Model Systems National Database follow-up interview and a web-based health literacy measure. Design: A multicenter, cross-sectional, observational study. Main Measures: The Health Literacy Assessment Using Talking Touchscreen Technology (Health LiTD, number of comorbid conditions (Medical and Mental Health Comorbidities Interview [MMHCI]), perceived physical and mental health (PROMIS Global Physical and Mental Health subscales), Patient Health Qpestionnaire-9 (PHQ:9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). Results: After controlling for sociodemographic, injury, cognition, and time post-injury, adequate health literacy was associated with higher odds of greater perceived physical health compared with participants with marginal/inadequate health literacy (odds ratio = 4.10; CI = 1.52-11.70]. Participants with inadequate/marginal health literacy had 3.50 times greater odds of depression (PHQ:9 2 10) compared with those with adequate health literacy. Participants 45 years and older reported a greater number of MMHCI physical health conditions, but fewer MMHCI mental health conditions and GAD-7 anxiety symptoms compared with those who were younger. Non-Hispanic White participants and those with mild/moderate TBI were more likely to report a greater number of MMHCI mental health conditions compared with non-Hispanic Black participants or those with severe TBI. Greater time post-injury was associated with greater number of chronic physical and mental health conditions, and less odds of good-to-excellent perceived global mental health. Conclusions: Inadequate health literacy is associated with worse perceived physical health and greater depressive symptoms among adults with TBI. Greater efforts are needed to explore the mechanisms by which health literacy influences chronic disease management and mental health after TBI to improve postinjury health status and outcomes, particularly among those with limited health literacy skills. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the clinical and prognostic relevance of the Hippo‐YAP transactivators YAP1 and TAZ in oral squamous cell carcinoma, and their possible relationship with PI3K/mTOR pathway activation. Materials and Methods: Immunohistochemical analysis of YAP1, TAZ, PIK3CA (p110α), p‐AKT (Ser473), and p‐S6 (Ser235) was performed in paraffin‐embedded tissue specimens from 165 OSCC patients. Correlations between protein expression and clinical data were further assessed. Results: YAP1 expression was detected in both cytoplasm and nucleus of tumor cells, whereas TAZ expression was only found in the nucleus. Nuclear YAP1 was significantly associated with tumor size (p = 0.03), neck lymph node metastasis (p = 0.02), TNM stage (p = 0.02), and poor differentiation (p = 0.04). Nuclear TAZ was associated with tobacco (p = 0.03) and alcohol consumption (p = 0.04), and poor tumor differentiation (p = 0.04). There was a positive significant correlation between nuclear and cytoplasmic YAP1, nuclear TAZ, p110α expression, and mTORC1 activation p‐S6 (S235). Combined expression of nuclear and cytoplasmic YAP1 was prognostic in both univariate and multivariate analyses. Active nuclear YAP1 was significantly and independently associated with poor disease‐specific (p = 0.005, HR = 2.520; 95% CI = 1.319–4.816) and overall survival (p = 0.015, HR = 2.126; 95% CI = 1.155–3.916). El artículo explicita el sentido teológico de la evolución de las expresiones de la espiritualidad latinoamericana entre las conferencias generales del Episcopado de Medellín y Puebla. Es el resultado de una investigación rigurosa y sistemática que –desde la propuesta del método en teología de Bernard Lonergan– se aproxima a la producción escrita sobre espiritualidad en dicho periodo. Se centra en la espiritualidad de la liberación, que se gestó al margen de las prácticas religiosas tradicionales y emergió en la experiencia de Dios que se da en la realidad del encuentro con el pobre, en medio de una búsqueda de liberación. El artículo afirma que el sentido teológico del surgimiento y despliegue de dicha espiritualidad consiste en que el Espíritu se expresa en la liberación de los pobres y en la conformación de una espiritualidad bíblica, cristocéntrica e inclusiva de la dimensión política del amor.

Este escrito pretende ilustrar la forma en que se vigorizó la reflexión sobre Espiritualidad de la Liberación durante la etapa comprendida entre la III Conferencia General del Episcopado, realizada en Puebla, y la IV Conferencia realizada en Santo Domingo. Es el resultado de una investigación elaborada desde la propuesta del método en teología de Bernard Lonergan, el cual facilitó la aproximación a la producción escrita sobre espiritualidad en dicho periodo. La investigación constató que la espiritualidad que emergió como fundamento de la Teología de la Liberación, lejos de desaparecer o desvirtuarse, debido a las profundas críticas suscitadas en el medio, se fue consolidando a partir de sus referentes teológicos fundamentales. Introducción: la bronquiolitis aguda es la principal causa de hospitalización en menores de un año. Las terapias con salbutamol inhalado o nebulizado, con grado variable de respuesta se usan en los hospitales dependiendo del criterio médico, sin embargo, no existen estudios que determinen el perfil de pacientes que responden a estos tratamientos, o que midan su efectividad en diferentes ámbitos. Objetivo: determinar si existió asociación entre los fenotipos clínicos de bronquiolitis aguda y la respuesta al salbutamol inhalado en lactantes atendidos en el Hospital Infantil Napoleón Franco Pareja (HINFP). Métodos: se diligenció formato de recolección de datos con revisión de las historias clínicas de los pacientes. La respuesta clínica al salbutamol se determinó usando el puntaje Wood-Downes-Ferrés a los 60 minutos. Resultados: el 57.2% de los pacientes tuvo respuesta clínica positiva con salbutamol. Los factores de riesgo para bronquiolitis más encontrados fueron: hacinamiento y sexo masculino. No hubo diferencias significativas en la distribución de factores de riesgo para bronquiolitis entre los pacientes con y sin mejoría clínica. El perfil A fue el más frecuente, existió mayor proporción de pacientes gravemente enfermos (perfil C) entre los que no mejoraron con salbutamol, y mayor proporción con enfermedad menos grave (perfil D) entre los que mejoraron. Los pacientes con mejoría clínica tuvieron mayor edad promedio, los que no mejoraron requirieron con más frecuencia otros tratamientos, hospitalizaciones en las primeras 24 horas, e ingresos a UCI. Conclusiones: la distribución de los factores de riesgo para bronquiolitis, para asma, ni los fenotipos clínicos permitieron diferenciar entre pacientes con o sin mejoría clínica en respuesta al tratamiento con salbutamol.

With greater survival rates after catastrophic injury, more women with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are living longer than ever. However, knowledge about this transition in these women is largely unexamined and there are no scales that have been developed to assess the experience of symptoms. To address this gap, we developed and tested a new scale of menopause symptoms in midlife women with TBI. We selected candidate items from two existing measures based on feedback from focus group discussions with seven women with TBI. Twenty candidate items were tested in cognitive interviews with six women with TBI/1 non-TBI. Then, these were field tested with 221 participants (TBI, n = 68; non-TBI, n = 153) recruited from registries. Rasch analysis and convergent validity testing were used to evaluate the new scale. Results of the Rasch analysis indicate that overall, the scale fits well the Rasch model with evidence for unidimensionality. Differential item functioning indicated that the scale performed equally well for women with and without TBI and distinguished pre- and post-menopausal states. Convergent validity was found in the expected directions. These findings support further development of the new scale to understand the experience of menopause symptoms among women with TBI. This study investigates the relevance of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Immunohistochemical analysis of stromal/tumoral CD4+, CD8+ and FOXP3+ TILs is performed in 125 OSCC patients. Potential relationships with the expression of tumoral PD-L1 and cancer stem cell (CSC) markers (NANOG, SOX2, OCT4, Nestin and Podoplanin (PDPN)) are assessed. CD4+ and CD8+ TILs are significantly associated with smoking and alcohol habits. CD4+ and CD8+ TILs show an inverse relationship with NANOG and SOX2 expression, and FOXP3+ TILs is significantly correlated with Nestin and PDPN expression. High infiltration of CD4+ and CD8+ TILs and a high tumoral CD8+/FOXP3+ ratio are significantly associated with tumors harboring positive PD-L1 expression. Infiltration of stromal/tumoral FOXP3+ TILs and a low stromal CD8+/FOXP3+ ratio are significantly associated with better disease-specific survival. Multivariate analysis reveals that the stromal CD8+/FOXP3+ TILs ratio is a significant independent prognostic factor. Regarding OSCC patient survival, the CD8+/FOXP3+ TILs ratio is an independent prognostic factor. TILs may act as biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets for OSCC.

Secondary growth forests have increased their extension in the last decades, and have been suggested as potential conservation reservoirs. The objective of this study was to evaluate diversity and vegetation composition in pastures and forests at (Granada, Cundinamarca, Colombia) to assess if successional processes show evidence of directionality, we placed six plots by 0.1-ha in the forest edges, one towards the forest and other to the abandoned paddocks in three locations. We determined the average vegetation structure, diversity, and floristic composition for each plot. We found that diversity is significantly higher in forest plots than in paddock plots (at early succession stage) in high Andean cloud ecosystems. The successional stage of each one of the study sites was characterized using non-metric multidimensional scaling. This analysis shows that vegetation tends to group in function of age groups more that it does by geographic location of the plots, suggesting succession is a directional process. Seedling recruitment was not significantly different between forest edge and forest interior. An inverse relation was found between floristic and geographic distances, reflecting the fact that matrix discontinuity is a limiting factor for seed dispersal, thus it is a barrier for high Andean cloud forest succession.
