CoMSAfrica's specific goal is to work towards a unified methodology for archaeologists working on African MSA stone tools that is replicable regardless of study region, time frame, site type and researcher, based on a transparent and objective approach.

International audience; A large part of Africa recently revealed important Middle Stone Age remains arguing for the emergence and spread of Homo sapiens on the African continent as early as the Middle Pleistocene. However, our knowledge of the role of the Congo Basin in continental and regional population dynamics remains misunderstood. The poor preservation of bone remains and chrono-stratigraphic contexts of Pleistocene open-air sites is often considered to be the main obstacles of Stone Age studies in Central Africa. Nearly a century after the creation of the first prehistoric cultural facies in Central Africa, the Tumbakultur, this paper goes through the history of the Congo Basin Middle Stone Age. We suggest that nomenclature, variability of approaches on lithic assemblages, the fragmentation of knowledge and dispersion of prehistoric collections are all factors which must be taken into account in order to develop new perspectives for future Stone Age research program in the Congo Basin.; Alors qu’une grande partie du continent africain révèle d’importants vestiges du Middle Stone Age témoignant de l’émergence et de la diffusion d’Homo sapiens sur le continent dès le Pléistocène moyen, les connaissances sur le rôle du bassin du Congo dans les dynamiques de peuplement continentales et régionales restent pauvres. La rare préservation des vestiges osseux et de la stratigraphie sur les sites pléistocènes de plein air est souvent considérée comme le principal écueil. Mais, près d’un siècle après la création du premier faciès culturel préhistorique régional de l’Afrique centrale, celui de la Tumbakultur, le bilan historiographique du Middle Stone Age du bassin du Congo suggère que la nomenclature, la diversité méthodologique des approches sur les pierres taillées et la fragmentation des savoirs et des collections préhistoriques sont autant de facteurs à prendre en compte afin de déployer de nouvelles perspectives de recherches en préhistoire.

International audience; Goda Buticha (“Cave of Ghosts” in the local Afaan Oromoo language), located near Dire Dawa in Eastern Ethiopia is one of the few sites documenting Late Pleistocene and Holocene human occupation in the Horn of Africa. Its preserved long stratigraphical sequence (more than 2 meters deep) records human presence from ~63 ka, and highlights a major chronological gap from ~23 ka to 8 ka, which prevents (as it is the case for other sites in the region) a direct documentation of the transition from the Middle to the Later Stone Age. However, it raises important issues in terms ofcultural (dis)continuity between the late Pleistocene and Mid-Holocene in the Horn. Beyond the technical features described at the site, the results from the comparative analysis are integrated with the chronological, sedimentological and palaeoenvironmental studies, and discussed at the regional scale. The lithic assemblage from the lower units of Goda Buticha (~63-23 ka) are characterised by typical MSA features, such as the use of Levallois flaking system and retouched points. High frequencies of elongated blanks may recall the MSA assemblage of Porc-Epic but the assemblage at Goda Buticha differs from the one of Porc-Epic by a more frequent use of obsidian and a trend towards the production of smaller blanks. These results highlight the variability within the Late Pleistocene MSA in the Horn of Africa.The assemblages from the upper layers (mid-Holocene) at Goda Buticha offer a complex picture, with the occurrence of both MSA and LSA features. They may represent very local adaptations, reintroduction of MSA characteristics within an LSA context or continuity into recent periods. It is interesting to note that the nearby terminal Pleistocene levels of Laas Geel shelter 7 are also characterised by such a combination of MSA and LSA features. The results add to the evidence for great variability of lithic technologies across Africa at the end of the Pleistocene and Holocene and may have implications for major questions, central to the understanding of this period: adaptation to climatic instability (the “Big Dry”) and population movements allowing us to highlight great cultural diversity whether linked with spatial ("regional identity"), or temporal (Early vs Late MSA) variability. Therefore, the LMSA of the Horn appears not to be a monolithic entity, and, in its variability as wellas in its features represents a behavioural patchwork, which makes its integration into the general models of the H. s. dispersals during the Late Pleistocene difficult. It also and mostly highlights the need to continue first working in smaller scale units, and questions the MIS 3 & 2 human occupations at a local scale.; éthiopien, est l’un des rares sites documentant l’occupation humaine de la fin Pléistocène et de l’Holocène dans la Corne de l’Afrique. Sa longue séquence stratigraphique (>2 mètres) enregistre des séries d’occupations depuis ~60 ka et met en évidence un hiatus chronologique et sédimentaire majeur de plus de 15 000 ans (~23-7 ka BP). Sans permettre d’appréhender directement, à l’instar des principaux sites de la région, la transition Middle/Later Stone Age (MSA/LSA), elle est un témoin privilégié pour discuter des (dis)continuités techno-culturelles à la fin du Pléistocène supérieur et à l’Holocène dans la Corne. La rareté des sites présentant de longues séquences dans cette région empêche également une compréhension à grande échelle de la dispersion des groupes humains ou de la diffusion comportementale.Au-delà des caractéristiques techniques, les résultats de l’analyse comparative du site sont intégrés aux études chronologiques, sédimentologiques et paléoenvironnementales, puis examinés à l’échelle régionale. L’étude du mobilier archéologique des couches inférieures de la séquence (~63-23 ka) met en évidence des caractéristiques MSA typiques telles que l’utilisation de modalités Levallois du débitage ou la confection de pointes unies ou bifaciales. La production de supports allongés peut en particulier faire écho au faciès MSA du site voisin de Porc-Epic, où l’usage plus généralisé de l’obsidienne ainsi qu’une composante lamellaire plus importante distinguent néanmoins fortement les deux assemblages l’un de l’autre.Les assemblages des couches supérieures (Holocène moyen) offrent une image « plus complexe », dans la mesure où des caractéristiques mixtes MSA et LSA sont apparentes, interrogeant directement sur une adaptation très locale des populations, la réintroduction de composantes MSA dans un contexte LSA ou une continuité technique jusqu’à des périodes récentes. Il est intéressant de noter en particulier que les niveaux du Pléistocène final de Laas Geel 7 (Somaliland) sont égalementcaractérisés par une telle mixité technique MSA/LSA. Au final, Goda Buticha est donc un exemple de la grande variabilité comportementale dans la Corne de l’Afrique à la fin du Pléistocène et à l’Holocène, avec des implications pour comprendre l’adaptation des populations à l’instabilité climatique du « Big Dry ».La transition MSA/LSA de la Corne, difficile à appréhender, ne semble pas être liée à deschangements monolithiques, mais plutôt relever d’un glissement comportemental multifacette quirend difficile son insertion dans les modèles généraux de la dispersion des Homo sapiens. Celasouligne également la nécessité de poursuivre l’investigation sur les occupations humaines de cettepériode dans leur cadre climatique et environnementale à une échelle avant tout locale.

During the Nubia Salvage Campaign and the subsequent expeditions from the 1960's to the 1980's, numerous sites attributed to the Late Palaeolithic (~25-15 ka) were found in the Nile Valley, particularly in Nubia and Upper Egypt. This region is one of the few to have allowed human occupations during the dry Marine Isotope Stage 2 and is therefore key to understanding how human populations adapted to environmental changes at this time. This paper focuses on two sites located in Upper Egypt, excavated by the Combined Prehistoric Expedition: E71K18, attributed to the Afian industry and E71K20, attributed to the Silsilian industry. It aims to review the geomorphological and chronological evidence of the sites, present a technological analysis of the lithic assemblages in order to provide data that can be used in detailed comparative studies, which will allow discussion of technological variability in the Late Palaeolithic of the Nile Valley and its place within the regional context. The lithic analysis relies on the chaîne opératoire concept combined with an attribute analysis to allow quantification. This study (1) casts doubts on the chronology of E71K18 and related Afian industry, which could be older or younger than previously suggested, highlights (2) distinct technological characteristics for the Afian and the Silsilian, as well as (3) similar technological characteristics which allow to group them under a same broad techno-cultural complex, distinct from those north or south of the area. ispartof: PLOS ONE vol:12 issue:12 ispartof: location:United States status: published

Modern humans are first associated in East Africa with technical behaviours defined as theMiddle Stone Age (MSA). The lithic technology is mainly characterised by flake production, as well as pointand elongated flake production, by means of Levallois and/or Discoïd methods, or prismatic core technology.One of the most representative tools is the retouched point. During the second part of the Upper Pleistocene,the production of elongated blanks (blades and bladelets) through prismatic cores becomes dominant and isassociated with microliths. This is defined as the Later Stone Age (LSA). However, the review of the UpperPleistocene sites from East Africa presents a more complex situation. Many lithic assemblages from this regionshow a mix of MSA and LSA features, leading to questions about the nature of changes between the Middleand the Later Stone Ages.Within the context of this question, the comparative study takes place between the assemblages of the sitesof Porc-Epic and Goda Buticha, located in south-eastern Ethiopia. The typo-technological analysis of the lithicmaterial relies on diagnostic criteria that appear to change through time : 1) the production of elongated blanks,2) the manufacture of retouched points, and 3) the manufacture of microliths. This study highlights the presenceof technical elements shared by both Pleistocene and Holocene layers. These elements could be interpreted interms of technical continuity, with a very gradual MSA/LSA transition. This technological pattern raises thequestion of the relevance of the use of the terminology MSA and LSA for this region. These results are of greatimportance with reference to major questions that are central to this period, namely the climatic instability,marked by very arid phases (the “Big Dry”) and the “Out of Africa 3” event. Les Hommes modernes ont émergé en Afrique il y a au moins 300 000 ans, et est présent en Afrique de l’Est il y a au moins 200 000 ans, date des plus anciens fossiles d’Homo sapiens découverts en Ethiopie. D’abord associés à des comportements techniques dits Middle Stone Age (MSA), ils sont ensuite associés à des comportements techniques dits Later Stone Age (LSA) à partir de la seconde moitié du Pléistocène supérieur. Le MSA et le LSA sont principalement définis à partir des caractéristiques des artefacts lithiques. Ainsi, le MSA se caractérise par une production principale d’éclats, de supports pointus voire allongés, obtenus par des méthodes de débitage telles que le Levallois ou le Discoïde. Plus rarement, une gestion volumétrique du débitage est présente (nucléus prismatiques). L’outil emblématique du MSA est la pointe retouchée. Le LSA se définit par une production dominante de supports allongés (lames et lamelles) transformés en microlithes, souvent interprétés comme armatures de projectiles (outils composites complexes). Cependant, les modalités de transitions des technologies MSA aux technologies LSA sont encore mal comprises. En Afrique de l’Est plus particulièrement, les rares sites datés du Pléistocène supérieur semblent indiquer des modalités de transition complexes avec des assemblages présentant à la fois des caractères MSA et LSA. C’est dans ce cadre que se place l’étude comparative de deux sites du sud-est de l’Ethiopie : Porc-Epic (PE) and Goda Buticha (GB). Ces deux sites sont parmi les rares de la région à avoir livré de longues séquences stratigraphiques datées du Pléistocène supérieur ainsi qu’Holocène pour Goda Buticha, et l’étude de leurs assemblages lithiques permet de discuter de la variabilité lithique au Pléistocène supérieur. En utilisant le concept de chaîne opératoire associé à une analyse d’attributs, l’analyse du matériel lithique repose sur les critères-clés autour desquels semble se cristalliser le changement du MSA au LSA à la fin du Pléistocène supérieur : (1) la production de supports allongés, (2) la manufacture de pointes retouchées et (3) celle des microlithes. Cette étude (1) contribue à une meilleure connaissance du MSA récent dans la Corne de l’Afrique, (2) montre la présence d’un niveau LSA Holocène récent (GB – complexe I) et (3) souligne la présence de caractéristiques MSA associées à des éléments LSA dans l’Holocène (GB – couche IIc). Backed pieces became widespread in the Upper Pleistocene and Holocene and are part of the classic definitions for the Later Stone Age in many parts of Africa. However, the association of backed pieces with Later Stone Age is not clear in the Horn of Africa. These pieces are present in both Middle Stone Age (MSA) and Later Stone Age (LSA) contexts. To what extent was the “backing phenomenon” homogeneous or diverse between and within the two periods? Here, we start with a review of the literature on backed pieces in the Horn of Africa, noting the lack of terminological consensus and the absence of a shared typology in the region. We then describe the variability of backed pieces using two complementary approaches: (1) multivariate statistical analysis on a set of 28 attributes of 188 artifacts from eight securely dated contexts and (2) 2D geometric morphometric analyses on the same dataset. The two approaches provide complementary results, which allow us to identify and discuss the chronological trends in backing technology and morphology, without introducing a new terminology or proposing a new formal “descriptive” typology.

Spatial and temporal variation among African Middle Stone Age (MSA) archeological assemblages provide essential cultural and behavioral data for understanding the origin, evolution, diversification, and dispersal of Homo sapiens—and, possibly, interactions with other hominin taxa. However, incorporating archeological data into a robust framework suited to replicable, quantitative analyses that can be integrated with observations drawn from studies of the human genome, hominin morphology, and paleoenvironmental contexts requires the development of a unified comparative approach and shared units of analysis. The CoMSAfrica workshop presented here, has the ambition to build bridges between researchers and research regions in Africa on these paramount topics.

The Late Pleistocene is a key period to understand the shift from the Middle ( MSA ) to the Late Stone Age ( LSA ) in Africa. More generally, it is also a crucial time for elucidation of changes in the technological behaviours of human populations in Africa after the main Out of Africa event of modern humans ca. 60-50 thousand years ago. However, the archaeological record for this period is relatively poor, particularly for the Horn of Africa. Here we present a detailed analysis of the lithic assemblages from Goda Buticha ( GB ), a cave in southeastern Ethiopia, which has yielded a long stratigraphic sequence including Late Pleistocene and Holocene levels. This study (1) contributes to a better knowledge of the late MSA in the Horn of Africa; (2) documents a late Holocene LSA level ( GB – Complex I ); (3) highlights the presence of MSA characteristics associated with LSA features in the Holocene ( GB – Layer II c). This adds to the emerging record of great lithic technological variability during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene in this region.Le Pleistocene recent est une periode cle pour comprendre le changement du Middle ( MSA ) vers le Late Stone Age ( LSA ) en Afrique. Plus generalement, c’est une periode-cle pour comprendre les changements dans les comportements techniques des populations humaines en Afrique, apres l’episode principal Out of Africa des Hommes modernes, ca 60-50 ka. Cependant, les donnees archeologiques pour cette periode sont relativement rares, particulierement pour la Corne de l’Afrique. Nous presentons ici une analyse detaillee des assemblages lithiques de la grotte de Goda Buticha ( GB ), situee pres de Dire-Dawa, en Ethiopie, et qui a livre une longue sequence stratigraphique incluant des niveaux dates du Pleistocene recent et de l’Holocene. Cette etude (1) contribue a une meilleure connaissance du MSA recent de la Corne de l’Afrique; (2) decrit un niveau LSA de l’Holocene recent ( GB – complexe I ); (3) souligne la presence de caracteristiques MSA associees a des traits LSA tres tard dans l’Holocene ( GB – couche II c).
