Methodology: Thirty-two three-month-old Wistar rats had apical periodontitis induced in four first molars and were then arranged into four groups: control (C)—rats with apical periodontitis; wine (W)—rats with apical periodontitis receiving 4.28 ml/kg of red wine; resveratrol+quercetin (R+Q)—rats with apical periodontitis receiving 4.28 ml/kg of a solution containing 1.00 mg/L of quercetin and 0.86 mg/L of resveratrol and alcohol (ALC)—rats with apical periodontitis receiving the alcoholic dose contained in the wine. The oral gavage treatments were administered daily, from day 0 to day 45. On the 15th day, apical periodontitis was induced, and on the 45th day, the animals were euthanized. This systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42021227711) evaluated the influence of diabetes mellitus (DM) on the response of the pulp tissue and in the pulp cells behaviour.Searches in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science and OpenGrey were performed until March 2022. Studies evaluating the effects of DM in the pulp tissue inflammation and in the cell behaviour were included, followed by risk of bias assessment (Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies and SYRCLE's RoB tools). The meta-analysis was unfeasible, and a narrative synthesis for each outcome was provided.Of the 615 studies, 21 were eligible, mainly with in vivo analysis (16 studies). The pulp inflammation (10 studies) was analysed mainly by haematoxylin-eosin stain; DM increased pulp inflammation/degeneration in 9 studies, especially after dental procedures. The cell viability (5 studies) was analysed mostly using MTT assay; DM and glycating agents decreased cellular viability in 3 studies. DM reduced collagen in all of three studies. There were controversial results regarding mineralization; however, increased alkaline phosphatase was reported in three of four studies.DM seems to increase inflammation/degeneration and mineralization in the pulp tissue while reducing cell proliferation. Further analyses in human pulp are important to provide stronger evidence.

Objetivo: O presente trabalho objetiva avaliar a produção científica publicadas nos anais do Congresso da Sociedade Brasileira de Pesquisa Odontológica (SBPqO) acerca da prótese total convencional. Metodologia: Foi realizado um estudo observacional retrospectivo, a partir da observação indireta e a análise de dados secundários, baseado nos trabalhos apresentados na Reunião Anual da SBPqO no período de 2014 a 2018. Foram analisados as variáveis nível de satisfação e qualidade de vida; deslocamento e inclinação; vínculo ao serviço público; infecção e contaminação; técnicas de moldagens; higiene; planejamento; estabilidade e retenção; e, materiais utilizados. Além disso, foram coletadas informações das subdivisões de regiões e estados, com o objetivo de verificar dentro da prótese total o panorama no Brasil no intervalo de cinco anos. Os dados foram catalogados e analisados com o auxílio do software SPSS na versão 16, e apresentados por meio da estatística descritiva. Resultados: Os resultados encontrados mostram que as Regiões Sudeste e Nordeste representam 56,9% e 24,7% da produção científica nacional sobre prótese respectivamente; 79,57% dos trabalhos foram realizados em instituições públicas; os temas mais pesquisados sobre prótese total é o nível de satisfação dos usuários e estabilidade da prótese; o número de publicações é muito flutuante ao longo dos anos. Conclusão: Conclui-se que existem muitas lacunas a serem abordadas sobre próteses totais, como os materiais disponíveis, planejamento e técnicas de moldagem. Material and Methods: Polyethylene tubes containing materials or empty tubes for control were inserted into the subcutaneous tissues of 30 rats. After 7, 15, 30, 60, and 90 days, the rats were killed and the tubes were removed for analysis using hematoxylin-eosin staining, von Kossa staining, and under polarized light. Inflammation was graded through a score system; the thickness of the fibrous capsule was classified as thin or thick; the biomineralization ability was recorded as present or absent. The results were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test (p0.05). After 30, 60, and 90 days, mild inflammation, and a thin fibrous capsule were observed in all groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: All materials had structures positive for von Kossa and birefringent to polarized light. CER epoxy resin showed biocompatibility and biomineralization similar to CER water and MTA. Methodology: Sixteen Wistar rats were used. Periapical periodontitis was induced in the four first molars in each animal. The animals were arranged into two groups: control (C)—rats with periapical periodontitis; and caffeine (CAF)—rats with periapical periodontitis under caffeine administration protocol. The CAF animals received 10 mg/100 g of body weight/day of caffeine via gavage starting fifteen days before PP induction and continuing for thirty more days until euthanasia. Objective: Evaluate and compare the antimicrobial efficacy of four different commercially available children’s toothpastes on bacteria growth inhibition from oral microbiota of young children. Material and Method: The toothpastes tested contained: 1100 ppm sodium fluoride, xylitol and 750 ppm sodium fluoride, xylitol and 500 ppm sodium fluoride, and xylitol and triclosan. Twenty 18 to 30 month-old children were selected. Nonstimulated saliva samples were collected and inoculated on brain heart infusion (BHI) agar. Toothpaste dilutions were applied into the agar wells and incubated at 37ºC for 24 hours in microaerophilic conditions. Saline and 0.12% chlorhexidine were used as controls. Objetivo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi o de identificar quais são os principais cimentos endodônticos que promovem a alteração de cor dental, além de mostrar quais outros caminhos podem ser seguidos, a fim de evitar o prejuízo estético do dente tratado. Metodologia: Foi realizada uma busca em inglês dos artigos através da base de dados PubMed, MedLine, Cochrane e Lilacs, no período de 2005 a 2020. Resultados: Observou-se que a maioria dos cimentos testados promoveram alterações de cor, especialmente materiais à base de óxido de zinco-eugenol e agregado trióxido mineral, quando aplicados em dentes anteriores, devido à estrutura delgada desse dente. Isso ocorre devido a componentes químicos presentes nesses materiais. Os componentes biocerâmicos são os que promovem menores alterações, quando comparados aos outros materiais citados neste estudo. Considerações Finais: A adequada limpeza da câmara pulpar é fundamental para evitar a descoloração dental após o tratamento endodôntico. O clareamento dental interno e a utilização do agente adesivo dentinário podem ser alternativas para melhorar a estética devido ao escurecimento dental provocado pelos obturadores endodônticos.

Endodontics has gained emphasis in the scientific community in recent years due to the increase in clinical and in animal models studies focused on endodontic medicine, which aims to evaluate the interrelationship between systemic and periapical tissues pathological conditions. These studies have shown that systemic changes can boost the pathogenesis of endodontic infection, favoring its development and progression. A contrary relationship is reported in numerous studies that affirm the potential of endodontic infection to trigger systemic damage and may lead to the worsening of pre-existing pathologies. Recently, the potential of filling materials to develop systemic changes such as neurological alterations had been evaluated, also showing that systemic diseases can negatively influence tissue responses to filling materials after endodontic treatment. Despite advances in endodontic medicine studies, there are still gaps in knowledge on the mechanisms of interactions between apical periodontitis (AP) and systemic diseases and much research to be done. In this sense, this critical narrative literature review aimed to show the evolution of studies in endodontic medicine to help the endodontist to know the role of systemic diseases in the pathogenesis of AP and the possible interference in the repair of periapical tissues after endodontic treatment, as well as to evidence the systemic complications that can be triggered or aggravated in the presence of endodontic infection.

Objective: To evaluate the pulp tissue of rat molars after pulpotomies with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), Biodentine TM (BDT) and calcium hydroxide (CH) mixed with sterile saline solution (24 hours, 72 hours, 7 days and 15 days), through correlating MPO activity with active neutrophils and MMP8 activity with tissue remodeling . Methodology: 16 Wistar rats were divided in two groups (n=8): rats with AP fed with regular diet (Control-C (CG)); rats with AP, fed with regular diet and supplemented with multi-strain formula (one billion colony-forming units (CFU)): GNC Probiotic Complex (PCG) (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus salivaris, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium animalis subs. lactis and Streptococcus thermofilus). AP was induced in the upper and lower first molars by dental pulp exposure to the oral environment. PCG was administered orally through gavage for 30 days during the AP development. Objective: To evaluate sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness in undergraduate dentistry students. Material and Methods: This research is characterized as an observational study of transversal type, having analysed undergraduate students in dentistry from a public university in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. The sample consisted of 325 students enrolled between the 1st and 10th academic semester. Sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while excessive daytime sleepiness was analysed through the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) . The t-Student and Mann-Whitney tests were used for the numerical values, with the F-test (ANOVA) or the Kruskal-Wallis test being used to compare more than two categories. Results: It was observed that 71.1% of students presented a poor sleep quality, with more than half of the students exhibiting excessive daytime sleepiness (58.1%). A relationship between sleep quality and the academic semester was verified. However, gender and age were not associated with sleep quality or with excessive daytime sleepiness . Conclusion: A high prevalence of poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness was observed among undergraduate students in dentistry. The data suggest that the undergraduate degree in Dentistry can influence the students’ quality of sleep, regardless of age or gender.

Methodology: L929 fibroblasts were cultured and MTT assay was used to determine the material cytotoxicity on 6, 24, and 48 h. A total of 30 male rats (Wistar) aged between 4 and 6 months, weighing between 250 and 300 g were used. Polyethylene tubes containing BIO-C PULPO, MTA, and empty tubes were implanted into dorsal connective tissue. After the experimental periods (7, 15, 30, 60, and 90 days) the tubes were histologically analyzed using hematoxylin-eosin (H&E), immunolabeling of IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha, and von Kossa staining, or without staining for polarized light analysis. The average number of inflammatory cells was quantified; the mineralization assessment was determined by the area marked in pmt and semiquantitative immunolabeling analyses of IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha were performed. Then, data underwent statistical analysis with a 5% significance level. Results: It was observed that BIO-C PULPO and MTA presented cytocompatibility at 6, 24, and 48 similar or higher than control for all evaluated period. Os traumatismos dentários constituem um problema de saúde de alta frequência em crianças e adultos jovens, e estão associados a consequências psicológicas, funcionais e ainda estéticas. A necrose pulpar é uma das principais consequências após o trauma dental, implicando, dessa forma, na falha do desenvolvimento radicular dos dentes permanentes recém erupcionados, os quais em razão disso permanecem com paredes finas e ápice aberto. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever uma opção de tratamento que permite, ao mesmo tempo, o fechamento do ápice radicular e o reforço das paredes apicais em dentes imaturos que apresentem status de necrose pulpar após esses sofrerem trauma. Foi utilizado como técnica a apicificação com aplicação única de hidróxido de cálcio. O presente trabalho permitiu concluir que a apicificação com hidróxido de cálcio é uma alternativa de baixo custo, facilmente aplicável na rotina clínica e que apresenta altas taxas de sucesso no tratamento de dentes imaturos traumatizados.

O tratamento de dentes com rizogênese incompleta e necrose pulpar representa um grande desafio para a terapia endodôntica, principalmente pela fragilidade das paredes radiculares desses dentes. Uma terapêutica que pode ser realizada é a revascularização pulpar com o objetivo de substituir estruturas danificadas, incluindo estruturas dentinárias e radiculares, bem como células do complexo dentino-pulpar com um tecido que permita a continuação da formação da raiz em espessura e tamanho. Esses procedimentos demonstraram ser capazes de promover o desenvolvimento continuado da raiz, aumentando assim a espessura e a resistência das raízes anteriormente finas e propensas à fratura. Este trabalho tem como objetivo realizar, através de uma revisão da literatura, um estudo sobre a revascularização pulpar e sua importância clínica no tratamento de dentes acometidos por necrose pulpar e cuja formação apical ainda não se completou. Para este estudo, foi realizado um levantamento na plataforma PubMed, em que foram incluídos artigos publicados entre 2004 e 2021. A revascularização pulpar pode ser considerada como uma alternativa promissora como tratamento para dentes com rizogênese incompleta e necrose pulpar, tendo vantagens potenciais em relação ao tradicional processo de apicificação.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the periodontal status of teeth indicated for undergoing endodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: Two hundred and nine teeth were evaluated using probing depth tests at three vestibular and three palatine/lingual sites before the patients underwent treatment. Teeth that presented up to 3-mm probing depth were considered as healthy. Those that presented at least one site with probing depth >3 mm were considered periodontally compromised. The data were statistically analyzed by means of applying the Chi-square test, with a level of significance of 5%. Results: Of the total of 209 teeth evaluated, 40 (19.10%) presented periodontal compromise. There was statistically significant difference related to the compromised teeth of patients of the female gender (22.80%) compared with teeth of patients of the male gender (12.30%) (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Fewer than 20% of the teeth evaluated presented a periodontal compromise. Patients of the female gender presented a higher number of periodontally compromised teeth than patients of the male gender.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical, radiographic and histological outcomes of the dentin-pulp complex from primary molars after pulpotomy with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and 15.5% ferric sulfate (FS). Thirty-one primary molars were randomly allocated into MTA or FS groups. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were recorded at 3-, 6-, 12- and 18-month follow-up. Teeth at the regular exfoliation period were extracted and processed for histological analysis. Clinical and radiographic data were tested by statistical analysis (p≤0.01). Histological outcomes were analyzed descriptively. All of the treated teeth presented clinical success over the experimental periods. Both groups exhibited 100% of radiographic success at 3, 6 and 12 months. At the 18-month follow-up, one tooth from FS group presented inter-radicular radiolucency (p>0.01). Histologically, the treated teeth presented pulp vitality and absence of inflammatory infiltrate into the connective tissue. Only MTA group showed hard tissue barrier surrounded by odontoblasts over the pulp stumps. Both MTA and 15.5% FS are effective for pulpotomies of primary teeth. Although MTA is considered the first-choice material, FS may be a suitable alternative when treatment cost is an issue. Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os resultados clínicos, radiográficos e histológicos do complexo dentino-pulpar de molares decíduos após pulpotomia com agregado trióxido mineral (MTA) e sulfato férrico (SF) 15,5%. Trinta e um molares decíduos foram alocados aleatoriamente nos grupos MTA ou SF. As avaliações clínicas e radiográficas foram realizadas aos 3, 6, 12 e 18 meses de acompanhamento. Os dentes no período regular de esfoliação foram extraídos e processados para análise histológica. Os dados clínicos e radiográficos foram analisados estatisticamente (p≤0,01). O resultados histológicos foram analisados descritivamente. Todos os dentes tratados apresentaram sucesso clínico ao longo dos períodos experimentais. Ambos os grupos exibiram 100% de sucesso radiográfico aos 3, 6 e 12 meses. Aos 18 meses de acompanhamento, um dente do grupo SF apresentou radiolucidez interradicular (p>0,01). Histologicamente, os dentes tratados apresentaram vitalidade pulpar e ausência de infiltrado inflamatório no tecido conjuntivo. Somente o grupo MTA mostrou barreira de tecido duro rodeada por odontoblastos sobre os cotos pulpares. MTA e SF 15,5% são eficazes para pulpotomias de dentes decíduos. Embora o MTA seja considerado o material de primeira escolha, o SF pode ser uma alternativa adequada quando o custo do tratamento é um problema.

A dor pós-operatória ao tratamento endodôntico é de origem multifatorial e pode afetar a qualidade de vida do paciente. Uma variedade de técnicas e combinações podem alcançar o controle da dor durante os procedimentos endodônticos. Ter conhecimento desses fatores guia o dentista em sua capacidade de aumentar a confiança do paciente, conduzir o tratamento de acordo com os fatores de risco para a dor e tomar medidas para reduzir os sintomas. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar as evidências atualmente disponíveis sobre o tema dor pós-operatória ao tratamento endodôntico. Para sua concretização foi realizado um levantamento na plataforma PubMed e incluídos artigos de revisão sistemática publicados entre 2016 e 2021. Os resultados deste estudo mostraram que a administração da medicação pré-operatória, a manutenção da patência apical, a agitação da substância irrigante com dispositivos automatizados e o uso de crioterapia intracanal são favoráveis na prevenção e/ou redução dos sintomas pós-operatórios. No entanto, faz-se necessário novos ensaios clínicos randomizados bem desenhados para melhor esclarecimento de alguns fatores relacionados à algesia após o tratamento endodôntico.

A fratura radicular horizontal pode ser definida como aquela que envolve dentina, cemento, ligamento periodontal e polpa, compreendendo de 1,2 a 7% dos traumas na dentição permanente. Afeta normalmente a região de dentes anteriores, e geralmente cicatriza-se espontaneamente, dependendo da vitalidade pulpar. O diagnóstico é realizado através de exame clínico, teste de sensibilidade pulpar e exame radiográfico. Além disso, a Tomografia Computadorizada de Feixe Cônico tem sido utilizada de forma a auxiliar no diagnóstico e prognóstico, devido a reprodução de imagens tridimensionais, permitindo visualizar de forma exata a localização e trajeto da linha de fratura. Este estudo relata um caso clínico de trauma dental causado por queda de própria altura. A paciente apresentava fratura radicular horizontal no elemento 21, localizada em terço médio, que foi confirmada através do exame radiográfico. Como tratamento imediato, foi realizado o reposicionamento e esplintagem. Para a confirmação da localização exata da fratura e se houve o processo de cicatrização, foi realizada imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico após 30 dias do trauma, pôde-se visualizar a fratura com trajeto oblíquo cicatrizada por tecido calcificado. Dessa forma, optou-se por acompanhamento da fratura radicular horizontal com tempo de controle de 15 dias, 30 dias, 60 dias, 2 anos e 5 anos. Permitindo, assim, que o dente seja preservado na cavidade bucal, sem intervenções.

Objetivo: O objetivo deste trabalho é realizar uma revisão de literatura acerca dos impactos causados no tratamento endodôntico pelos acessos endodônticos conservadores em relação aos acessos endodônticos tradicionais. Metodologia: Foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica sobre o tema na base de dados do Pubmed e Scielo, coletando artigos entre 2014 e 2020. Resultados: Em dentes incisivos com acessos conservadores não há aumento da resistência em comparação aos acessos tradicionais, mas ainda não há consenso na literatura a respeito dos dentes posteriores. Canais ovais de dentes com acessos conservadores apresentaram mais áreas não instrumentadas. Foram observados também relatos de transporte apical, mudança da curvatura original, detritos residuais na câmara pulpar, dificuldade na localização de canais e aumento do tempo de tratamento em dentes com acessos conservadores. Considerações Finais: Não há indícios de resistência à fratura aumentada em dentes incisivos com acessos conservadores e nem há consenso em relação aos dentes posteriores. Devido a isso e ao fato desse tipo de acesso trazer algumas limitações ao tratamento endodôntico, não há razão para preconizá-lo em detrimento do acesso tradicional, principalmente sem uso de magnificação e ultrassom.

Objectives This study evaluated smear layer removal by different chemical solutions used with or without ultrasonic activation after post preparation. Materials and Methods Forty-five extracted uniradicular human mandibular premolars with single canals were treated endodontically. The cervical and middle thirds of the fillings were then removed, and the specimens were divided into 9 groups: G1, saline solution (NaCl); G2, 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl); G3, 2% chlorhexidine (CHX); G4, 11.5% polyacrylic acid (PAA); G5, 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). For the groups 6, 7, 8, and 9, the same solutions used in the groups 2, 3, 4, and 5 were used, respectively, but activated with ultrasonic activation. Afterwards, the roots were analyzed by a score considering the images obtained from a scanning electron microscope. Results EDTA achieved the best performance compared with the other solutions evaluated regardless of the irrigation method (p < 0.05). Conclusions Ultrasonic activation did not significantly influence smear layer removal.

Objective: This study evaluated the leakage volume of 1% Rhodamine B which received or not an internal waterproofing material. The hypothesis is that the waterproofing reduces microleakage. Material and Methods: Forty-two human teeth were selected for this study. After access, preparation, and filling of root canals, the teeth were divided into 3 groups: GI – sealed with Cimpat Blanc®, without intraradicular post/core preparation; GII - sealed with Cimpat Blanc®, with intraradicular post/core preparation, and GIII – sealed with Cimpat Blanc®, with intraradicular post/core preparation and internal waterproofing material with ethyl cyanoacrylate. Bioceramic (Bio-C) Repair is a ready-for-use material suggested as substitute for MTA, but its properties need to be studied. This study evaluated the cytotoxicity, biocompatibility and biomineralization of Bio-C Repair compared to MTA Repair High-Plasticity (MTA-HP) and white MTA-Angelus (MTA-Ang). L929 fibroblasts were exposed to material-extracted (undiluted, ½ and ¼ dilutions; 6, 24 and 48h). Polyethylene tubes with material or empty (control) were implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of rats. After 7 and 30 days (n=8), the specimens were removed for analysis (hematoxylin-eosin, von Kossa and polarized light). Cytotoxicity data were statistically analyzed by two-way ANOVA, and biocompatibility data by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (p0.05). At 7 and 30 days, the groups had moderate and mild inflammation, respectively (p>0.05). All materials showed positive structures for von Kossa and polarized light. Methods: Forty Wistar rats were arranged into five groups: (C) – control rats receiving sterile water as the only liquid; (G5) – animals receiving an alcohol solution at 5%, (G10) – alcohol solution at 10%, (G15) – alcohol solution at 15%, and (G20) – alcohol solution at 20%. The alcoholic solution or water was given to the groups as the sole source of hydration throughout the 30 days of the experiment. AP was induced in the mandibular molars on the first day. In the end, the animals were euthanized for histopathological and IL-1b, RANKL, OPG, and TRAP analyses. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used for nonparametric data, and ANOVA followed by the Tukey test were performed for parametric data, p < 0.05. Results: G15 and G20 had a greater chronic inflammatory infiltrate (Score 3) and AP size bigger (1.59 ± 0.41 and 1.83 ± 0.38, respectively) than the C, G5 and G10 (p < 0.05). No significant difference was found in the IL-1b analyses. The G15 and G20 showed the highest immunolabeling pattern for RANKL and the lowest for OPG. The G20 had greater TRAP cells per mm (4.70 ± 0.99) compared to the C, G5, and G10 (p < 0.05). Furthermore, G15 presented 3.92 ± 0.64 TRAP cells/mm, higher than C (p < 0.05). Conclusions: G5 and G10 did not exert a protective or aggravating effect on the AP development. However, G15 and G20 had a significant effect on the AP severity, exacerbating the inflammation and osteoclast markers. Aim To evaluate the effect of systemic administration of probiotics on the severity of apical periodontitis (AP). Methodology Twenty-four male Wistar rats were used. AP was induced in the maxillary left/right first molars. The animals were arranged into groups: Control, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Probiotics were administered orally for gavage (109 colony-forming units diluted in 5 mL of water for 30 days) during the development of AP. After 30 days, cardiac puncture was performed to analyse the complete blood count. Moreover, microbiological analysis of the root canal contents and saliva was performed. Then, the animals were euthanized and the jaw removed for histopathological and IL-10, IL-1β and IL-6 immunolabeling analyses. AIM The aim of the present study was to evaluate apical periodontitis (AP) development in rats under a chronic alcohol diet by calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase blood levels in addition to histological and radiographic analyses. METHODS Thirty-two rats were arranged into four groups: (a) group 1: without apical periodontitis and on a regular diet; (b) group 2: AP and on a regular diet; (c) group 3: alcoholic diet without apical periodontitis; and (d) group 4: alcoholic diet and apical periodontitis. Methodology: Forty-five primary mandibular molars with dental caries were treated by conventional pulpotomy using one of the following materials: MTA only (MTA group), CH with saline (CH+saline group) and CH with polyethylene glycol (CH+PEG group) (15 teeth/group). Clinical and periapical radiographic examinations of the pulpotomized teeth were performed 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment. Data were tested by chi-squared analysis and a multiple comparison post-test. Results: The MTA group showed both clinical and radiographic treatment success in 14/14 teeth (100%), at all follow-up appointments. By clinical evaluation, no teeth in the CH+saline and CH+PEG groups had signs of mobility, fistula, swelling or inflammation of the surrounding gingival tissue. However, in the CH+saline group, radiographic analysis detected internal resorption in up to 9/15 teeth (67%), and inter-radicular bone resorption and furcation radiolucency in up to 5/15 teeth (36%), from 3 to 12 months of follow-up. In the CH+PEG group, 2/11 teeth (18%) had internal resorption and 1/11 teeth (9%) presented bone resorption and furcation radiolucency at all follow-up appointments. Conclusion: CH with PEG performed better than CH with saline as capping material for pulpotomy of primary teeth. However, both combinations yielded clinical and radiographic results inferior to those of MTA alone. To investigate the tissue response and the biomineralization ability of the experimental nanoparticulate mineral trioxide aggregate compared to grey MTA and Fillapex MTA. O presente estudo relata um caso de reabsorção patológica radicular em um molar decíduo tratado endodônticamente com pasta CTZ. Paciente do gênero masculino, 7 anos de idade, procurou atendimento, acompanhado por seus genitores, com a queixa principal de que o dente apresentava dor aguda. Durante a anamnese, o responsável relatou que o dente vinha apresentando dor espontânea que se intensificava durante a mastigação. Ao exame clínico não foi constatado quaisquer alterações em mucosa, gengiva e língua. Entretanto, verificou-se a presença de exposição da câmera pulpar do dente 55, sem indícios de polpa, configurando um quadro clínico de necrose. Ao realizar o exame radiográfico inicial foi possível verificar lesão de cárie extensa atingindo a região de cornos pulpares distais e raízes com comprimento maior que 1/3 e coroa do dente sucessor ainda não totalmente formada. Constatada a viabilidade da manutenção do dente 55 na cavidade oral, instituiu-se o tratamento endodôntico através da técnica LSTR com a pasta antibiótica CTZ (cloranfenicol, tetraciclina, óxido de zinco) e restauração com resina composta. O paciente foi acompanhado por um período de 3 e 12 meses após o tratamento inicial. Em ambas as visitas, a restauração se apresentou hígida e satisfatória, contudo, foi possível notar aumento da reabsorção radicular lateral e de radiolucidez na região de furca. Após constatada tal reabsorção o dente teve sua indicação para a exodontia. A pasta CTZ pode estimular o aumento da velocidade de rizólise em dentes decíduos por meio de reabsorções radiculares patológicas. Porém, estudos longitudinais precisam ser conduzidos.

Objetivo: Identificar e avaliar criticamente os atuais métodos validados para a mensuração do Letramento em Saúde Bucal (LSB) no Brasil, bem como seus achados epidemiológicos. Métodos: A busca desta revisão integrativa da literatura foi conduzida em sete bases de dados. Os critérios de elegibilidade abrangeram estudos epidemiológicos conduzidos no Brasil, de validação de instrumentos para o português brasileiro e avaliação das propriedades psicométricas das ferramentas. Todo o processo de exclusão e inclusão seguiu as recomendações do Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Resultados: Dez artigos foram incluídos neste estudo. Foi verificado que apenas quatro instrumentos de mensuração do LSB possuem validação para uso no Brasil, delineados com diferentes propósitos e propriedades psicométricas. A maioria dos estudos epidemiológicos foi conduzida na região Sul do país (60%) e não foram encontradas pesquisas nas regiões Norte e Centro-Oeste. Considerações Finais: Futuros estudos epidemiológicos que utilizem os instrumentos recentemente validados para a mensuração do grau de LSB, em uma disposição demográfica mais proporcional, são fundamentais para que possam ser identificadas falhas nos métodos de educação em saúde atualmente empregados, aprimorando as políticas de saúde bucal e permitindo ao clínico/pesquisador uma intervenção mais próxima da realidade da população na qual atua.

Permanent maxillary central incisor impaction is a rare condition of multifactorial etiology that should be treated on diagnosis. This article describes multidisciplinary treatment of an 11-year-old patient presenting with a permanent maxillary right central incisor that was impacted due to the presence of 2 supernumerary teeth. The diagnosis was reached through clinical evaluation, radiography, and cone beam computed tomography. Treatment involved the surgical removal of the supernumerary teeth followed by traction of the impacted tooth through a combination of removable and fixed orthodontic appliances. Orthodontic treatment was completed after 18 months, resulting in adequate positioning of the right central incisor in the arch. Periodic follow-up visits were scheduled for prophylaxis and oral hygiene reinforcement. After 2 years, the teeth were adequately aligned, the gingiva was healthy, and the patient was esthetically satisfied. The multidisciplinary approach allowed functional and esthetic oral rehabilitation, thus helping the patient to avoid the psychological impact of a missing anterior tooth.

Aim To evaluate the inflammatory response, biomineralization and production of osteocalcin (OCN), osteopontin (OPN), and bone sialoprotein (BSP) of a new root filling material for primary teeth (Bio-C Pulpecto) compared to MTA. Design Polyethylene tubes containing Bio-C Pulpecto, MTA, and empty tubes were implanted into the dorsal connective tissue. After 7, 15, 30, 60, and 90 days, the tubes with surrounding tissue were removed and histologically processed to be analysed using haematoxylin and eosin, von Kossa staining, or no staining for observation under polarized light and immunohistochemistry for the detection of OCN, OPN, and BSP. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used followed by Dunn's test. The significance level was set at 5%. Results The inflammatory response observed with MTA and Bio-C Pulpecto was more exacerbated until the 15th day and decreased from 30 days on. No significant difference was found between control, MTA, and Bio-C Pulpecto (P > 0.05). Bio-C Pulpecto and MTA showed positivity for von Kossa and birefringent to polarized light. The immunolabelling for OCN, OPN, and BSP was more intense for MTA and Bio-C Pulpecto on days 60 and 90 (P > 0.05). Conclusion Bio-C Pulpecto was biocompatible, induced biomineralization and was immunopositive for osteogenic markers such as OCN, OPN, and BSP, similarly to MTA.

AIM To evaluate the inflammatory response and ability to induce mineral deposition through histological and immunohistochemical analysis for osteocalcin (OCN), osteopontin (OPN) and bone sialoprotein (BSP) of a new calcium silicate-based cement, Bio-C Pulpo (Angelus), compared to white mineral trioxide aggregate (White MTA-Ang) (Angelus). METHODOLOGY Polyethylene tubes containing Bio-C Pulpo and White MTA-Ang as well as empty tubes were implanted into the dorsal connective tissue of 30 Wistar rats, which were arranged in five groups according to the period of analysis: 7, 15, 30, 60 and 90 days. After each experimental period, the tubes with surrounding tissue were removed and histologically processed to be analysed using haematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemistry for the detection of OCN, OPN and BSP. The data were statistically analysed (Friedman's test) at a 5% significance level. RESULTS The inflammatory response observed with Bio-C Pulpo and White MTA-Ang was greater after 7 and 15 days and decreased from 30 days onwards. No significant difference was found between the control, Bio-C Pulpo and White MTA-Ang at the different periods of analysis (P > 0.05). The immunolabelling for OCN, OPN and BSP was more intense for Bio-C Pulpo and White MTA-Ang after 60 and 90 days, but there was no difference between Bio-C Pulpo and White MTA-Ang at the different periods of analysis (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Bio-C Pulpo is biocompatible and induces immunolabelling of osteogenic markers such as OCN, OPN and BSP similar to White MTA-Ang.
