Door de voortgaande uitrol van wind op zee, krijgen -beschermde- zeevogels op de Noordzee in toenemende mate te maken met windmolenparken in hun primaire habitat: de open zee. Andere grootschalige interacties tussen zeevogels en menselijk handelen op zee zijn gevat in kaartbeelden, die in één oogopslag een indruk geven van gebieden met een hoog risico en gebieden met een laag risico. Dit is in het verleden ook gedaan ten behoeve van de bestrijding van olievlekken op zee, maar ook effecten van bijvoorbeeld scheepvaart lenen zich voor een dergelijke ruimtelijke analyse. Windparken op zee hebben in verschillende gebieden verschillende effecten op zeevogels, omdat de avifauna van plaats tot plaats verschilt, en omdat niet alle soorten zeevogels even gevoelig zijn voor windmolens. Door zeevogel dichtheidskaarten te combineren met een gevoeligheidsindex per soort, kunnen gevoeligheden voor alle soorten bij elkaar worden opgeteld en kan een integraal beeld verkregen worden voor de windmolengevoeligheid van alle voorkomende zeevogels, gedurende het hele jaar. Er is inmiddels al een kleine reeks van dit type kaarten vervaardigd, maar de meest recente stamde uit 2015. Sindsdien zijn er veel aanvullende zeevogelsurveys op de Noordzee uitgevoerd en een windmolengevoeligheidskaart wordt beter, naarmate de basis sterker is. Om deze reden heeft het ministerie van LVN aan Wageningen Marine Research gevraagd om een update te maken van een Noordzee-brede kaart van zeevogel windmolengevoeligheid. Uit deze rekenoefening blijkt, dat op de schaal van de Noordzee, de grootste risico’s ten opzichte van de zeevogels van het plaatsen van windmolens liggen in brede stroken in grote delen van de kustwateren: precies dáár waar de meeste offshore windparken zijn gepland. In Nederlandse wateren zijn de risico’s, afgezet tegen andere delen van de Noordzee, relatief groot en het grootst in de zuidelijke helft van het NCP. In onze kustwateren leven grote aantallen broedvogels in de zomer, en grote aantallen overwinteraars van elders in de rest van het jaar. De hoogst-gevoelige delen strekken zich uit tot en met het gebied van het Friese Front. Wanneer de analyse beperkt zou worden tot de Nederlandse sector van de Noordzee, zou de kaart hier minder rood kleuren als dezelfde relatieve grenzen zouden worden aangehouden (20% rood van het hele gebied, 20% geel en 60% groen).

The Black-capped Petrel Pterodroma hasitata is a pelagic seabird with a dangerously small population size. Remaining breeding sites are threatened by habitat loss, introduced predators, and direct harvesting. The species likely also faces several threats at sea, but because knowledge of its distribution range and ecology is meagre at best, it is challenging to take concerted action to improve its conservation status. The species is currently known to breed only on Hispaniola (in the northern Caribbean Sea), but most at-sea observations are from the Florida Current and the Gulf Stream off the southeastern coast of the USA. Within the Caribbean Sea, observations are scarce. We compiled a database of at-sea sightings of Black-capped Petrels in the Caribbean Sea from 1953 to 2018 by thoroughly reviewing published and unpublished records (Appendix 1); here, we add to the literature 12 new records from a research cruise conducted in February 2018 across the Caribbean Sea. Our database was augmented with recently published information from three birds that were fitted with tracking devices. Based on the collected information, we argue that the existing distribution maps of Black-capped Petrels need adjustments. We show that Black-capped Petrels have been recorded throughout the central parts of the Caribbean, from the known breeding sites in the north down to coastal waters off Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela. However, the birds probably forage only in small parts of the Caribbean Sea (i.e., the coastal upwelling zones off Hispaniola and Cuba in the north and off the South American mainland in the south). The waters in between (i.e., in the central Caribbean Sea) appear to be mainly used as a corridor, while the eastern and western parts are unimportant. This indicates that certain hotspots within the Caribbean Sea may be more important to this endangered species than previously thought.

Between the 8 th January and the 25 th February 2016, the largest sperm whale Physeter macrocephalus mortality event ever recorded in the North Sea occurred with 30 sperm whales stranding in five countries within six weeks. All sperm whales were immature males. Groups were stratified by size, with the smaller animals stranding in the Netherlands, and the largest in England. The majority (n = 27) of the stranded animals were necropsied and/ or sampled, allowing for an international and comprehensive investigation into this mortality event. The animals were in fair to good nutritional condition and, aside from the pathologies caused by stranding, did not exhibit significant evidence of disease or trauma. Infectious agents were found, including various parasite species, several bacterial and fungal pathogens and a novel alphaherpesvirus. In nine of the sperm whales a variety of marine litter was found. However, none of these findings were considered to have been the primary cause of the stranding event. Potential anthropogenic and environmental factors that may have caused the sperm whales to enter the North Sea were assessed. Once sperm whales enter the North Sea and head south, the water becomes progressively shallower (

Marine filter feeders are exposed to microplastic because of their selection of small particles as food source. Baleen whales feed by filtering small particles from large water volumes. Macroplastic was found in baleen whales before. This study is the first to show the presence of microplastic in intestines of a baleen whale (Megaptera novaeangliae). Contents of its gastrointestinal tract were sieved, dissolved in 10% potassium hydroxide and washed. From the remaining dried material, potential synthetic polymer particles were selected based on density and appearance, and analysed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Several polymer types (polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinylchloride, polyethylene terephthalate, nylon) were found, in varying particle shapes: sheets, fragments and threads with a size of 1 mm to 17 cm. This diversity in polymer types and particle shapes, can be interpreted as a representation of the varying characteristics of marine plastic and the unselective way of ingestion by M. novaeangliae.

Voor het ministerie van Economische Zaken (EZ) is het van belang te weten in welke mate de aanleg van de Marker Wadden aansluit op de Natura 2000-doelen in aanvulling op het onderzoek in het kader van de Nb-wetvergunning, de aanleg van de Marker Wadden en de MWTL-monitoring. Deze studie richt zich daarom op de vraag: ‘Hoe de aanleg van een eilandensysteem met een dynamische ontwikkeling (als paaiplaats voor vissen en voedselplek voor vogels) bijdraagt aan de realisatie van de Natura 2000-doelen’.

30 sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) stranded along the coasts of the North Sea between January and February 2016. The gastro-intestinal tracts of 22 of the carcasses were investigated. Marine debris including netting, ropes, foils, packaging material and a part of a car were found in nine of the 22 individuals. Here we provide details about the findings and consequences for the animals. While none of the items was responsible for the death of the animal, the findings demonstrate the high level of exposure to marine debris and associated risks for large predators, such as the sperm whale.

Most mortality of Puffins occurs outside the breeding season but little is known about the species’ diet at that time. The stomach contents of 176 Puffins shot legally for food around the Faroe Islands between October and January in three winters were examined. The remains of 20 species of fish, six species of crustacea and single species of polychaete, chaetognathid and squid were identified. The most frequently recorded prey in terms of frequency of occurrence were 0 group (less than one year old) Lesser Sandeel Ammodytes marinus (82% of stomachs), followed by mesopelagic fish (52%), nereid worms (41%), Silver Rockling Gaidropsarus argentatus (36%), crustacea (35%), large sandeel (32%) and other large fish (32%). In terms of calculated biomass, nereids (41%), large sandeel (23%) and other large fish (17%) made up the bulk of the diet but the latter two prey types were most important in energetic terms (46% despite accounting for only 9% of items). Stomachs contents collected on the same day and location were significantly more similar than those collected on different dates and locations, suggesting that during winter Puffins are generalists taking any prey they encounter.

Long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) are rare visitors to the southern North Sea, but recently two individual strandings occurred on the Dutch coast. Both animals shared the same, unusual cause of death: asphyxiation from a common sole (Solea solea) stuck in their nasal cavity. This is a rare cause of death in cetaceans. Whilst asphyxiation has been reported in smaller odontocetes, there are no recent records of this occurring in Globicephala species. Here we report the stranding, necropsy and diet study results as well as discuss the unusual nature of this phenomenon. Flatfish are not a primary prey species for pilot whales and are rarely eaten by other cetaceans, such as harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), in which there are several reports of asphyxiation due to airway obstruction by soles. This risk may be due to the fish’s flexible bodies which can enter small cavities either actively in an attempt to escape or passively due to the whale ‘coughing’ or ‘sneezing’ to rid itself of the blockage of the trachea. It is also possible that the fish enter the airways whilst the whale is re-articulating the larynx after trying to ingest large, oddly shaped prey. It is unlikely that the soles entered the airways after the death of the whales and we believe therefore that they are responsible for the death of these animals.

This paper describes nocturnal, marine feeding behaviour in the Brown-hooded Gull (Larus maculipennis) in November 2009. The gulls assembled at night at the end of a long pier, running 800 m offshore into the Golfo Nuevo, at Puerto Madryn, Chubut Province, Argentina. Powerful lights predictably lighted the water around the end of the pier and attracted many small prey animals to the surface. Several hundreds of gulls, presumed to be local breeders, came every night to feed on this bounty, using various feeding techniques and taking several prey species and sizes. Potential prey items were caught to be identified by vertical plankton hauls. The gulls most likely took relatively large Isopoda (Idothea sp.), Polychaeta (Platynereis sp.) and fish larvae (Patagonotothen sp.) as well as smaller crustaceans, mostly Amphipoda (Phoxocephalidae) and Mysidacea. The gulls caught small prey items while swimming, by rapid surface pecking, while they hunted the larger prey species by flying low over the water and performing shallow, vertical plunge-dives. During daylight, only few gulls ventured from land into the bay, indicating that they took advantage of the nocturnal feeding opportunity, facilitated by artificial lighting. The clear short-term gain of exploiting this novel foraging opportunity may be offset by potential threats such as increased vulnerability to predators or contamination by oil spills from ships moored along the pier. Varios cientos de gaviotas, presumiblemente individuos reproductivos provenientes de una colonia cercana, se alimentaron diariamente en este sitio usando diferentes técnicas de alimentación y capturando presas de diferentes especies y tallas. Las presas potenciales fueron capturadas para su identificación a través de muestreos verticales con una red de plancton. Las presas que seguramente capturaron las gaviotas eran Isopoda de tamaño relativamente grande (Idothea sp.), Polychaeta (Platynereis sp.) y larvas de peces (Patagonotothen sp.), así como crustáceos de menor tamaño, mayormente Amphipoda (Phoxocephalidae) y Mysidacea.
