Abstract The controlled growth of two-dimensional (2D) perovskite atop three-dimensional (3D) perovskite films reduces interfacial recombination and impedes ion migration, thus improving the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Unfortunately, the random orientation of the spontaneously formed 2D phase atop the pre-deposited 3D perovskite film can deteriorate charge extraction owing to energetic disorder, limiting the maximum attainable efficiency and long-term stability of the PSCs. Here, we introduce a meta-amidinopyridine ligand and the solvent post-dripping step to generate a highly ordered 2D perovskite phase on the surface of a 3D perovskite film. The reconstructed 2D/3D perovskite interface exhibits reduced energetic disorder and yields cells with improved performance compared with control 2D/3D samples. PSCs fabricated with the meta-amidinopyridine-induced phase-pure 2D perovskite passivation show a maximum power conversion efficiency of 26.05% (a certified value of 25.44%). Under damp heat and outdoor tests, the encapsulated PSCs maintain 82% and 75% of their initial PCE after 1000 h and 840 h, respectively, demonstrating improved practical durability.

The accounting division plays a crucial role in providing accurate financial data and insights, which are instrumental to informed decision-making and strategic planning. Organizational financial transparency and effective support for resource management depend on accounting. This paper presents a deep neural network (DNN)-based accounting analytics, NeuralACT, to support the decision-making process using real-time predictions made from big data. It uses a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) network trained with Visegrad Group Companies (VGC) dataset customized and improved for accounting features prediction. The incorporation of bootstrapping while ensuring proper data variance significantly improved the performance of the system. Experimental results demonstrate the outstanding performance of NeuralACT, with an RMSE of 0.0181, MAE of 0.0145, MAPE of 5.14%, and an average $R^{2}$ of 0.99, significantly outperforming existing methods. The experimental setup involves 10 categories of data from 2000 sources, sending data at a rate of 512 Mbps to 720 Mbps. The NeuralACT framework demonstrates consistent performance for big data, maintaining an average throughput of 0.1338 Gbps and latency of 0.039 s. In a nutshell, NeuralACT is a high-performing, innovative, and real-time accounting analytics framework capable of handling big data with exceptional performance.

Land snails and the Aegean Archipelago offer an intriguing combination for studying biodiversity, biogeography and ecology. A region with high environmental and temporal heterogeneity and a tri-continental biotic influence and a group of organisms with low active dispersal abilities, high endemism, as well as the particularity to leave shells as traces of past presence, set an ideal stage for testing biodiversity patterns and exploring multisource threats, especially in the era of the ongoing biodiversity crisis. In this study, we examine Helix godetiana, a large-sized, threatened and endemic land snail of the central and south Aegean Islands. The species has been extirpated from 22 of the 32 islands where it was historically present. We identify potential drivers of its extinction, as Helix godetiana faces several threats across its current range, including competitive exclusion by Cornu aspersum, a species with continuing expansion in the Aegean and climate change disrupting its unusual breeding cycle, which occurs in late spring. Our findings shed light on potentially major, yet previously unexplored, threats on endemic molluscs of the Aegean Islands, a European biodiversity hotspot.

Abstract Purpose The management of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) at reference centers with specialized multidisciplinary tumor boards (MTB) improves patient survival. The German Cancer Society (DKG) certifies sarcoma centers in German-speaking countries, promoting high standards of care. This study investigated the variability in treatment recommendations for localized STS across different German-speaking tertiary sarcoma centers. Methods In this cross-sectional case-based survey study, 5 anonymized patient cases with imaging data of localized STS were presented to MTBs of 21 German-speaking tertiary referral hospitals. Centers provided recommendations on treatment sequence and modalities, along with the consensus level within their MTB. Agreement percentages were calculated, and consensus levels were rated on a scale of 1 to 10. Results Five patient cases were discussed resulting in 105 recommendations. Agreement percentages for case 1 to 5 were 14.3%, 61.9%, 33.3%, 52.4% and 9.3%, with a median agreement percentage of 33.3%. Grouping pre- and postoperative therapies as "perioperative" and including recommendations with and without regional hyperthermia raised the median agreement to 47.6%. The mean consensus level within each center across all 5 cases was 9.5. Conclusion This first case-based analysis of inter-center agreement for STS management in German-speaking countries reveals low inter-center agreement but high intra-center consensus. Our study includes nearly all tertiary sarcoma centers in German-speaking countries, affirming its strong external validity. These findings suggest potential and clinically very relevant differences in treatment standards among sarcoma centers. Enhanced case-based exchanges and collaborative efforts are needed to reduce discrepancies and standardize the management of STS patients.

Abstract Background With various infectious disease risks to passenger ship travellers, guidance for infectious disease prevention, mitigation and management (PMM) exists. Emerging infections and emergencies necessitate updated, context-specific guidelines and practices. New evidence for infection PMM must be translated into guidance for governmental authorities and the passenger ship industry. Under the European HEALTHY SAILING project, we conducted a scoping review of publications in PubMed, Scopus and grey literature for scientific articles, regulations, guidelines and policies describing infectious disease PMM in seaports, cruise, ferry, expedition and river cruise ships between 1990 and 2023. Main findings Of 620 publications most were peer-reviewed articles (57.7%) and technical guidance (27.9%), followed by reports/other documents (9.1%), industry guidance (3.4%) and legislation (1.9%). Half (50.5%) of all publications addressed respiratory illnesses, fewer addressed gastroenteritis (11.5%), Legionnaire’s (6.1%), other vaccine-preventable (3.2%), vector-borne (1.6%) and sexually transmitted (1.0%) diseases. Most publications focus on infectious disease in seagoing cruise ships (75.7%) compared to ferries, expedition and river cruise ships (26.6%, 16.9%, 16.3%, respectively). Fewer publications addressed seaports (39.0%), shore-side personnel (19.7%) and port communities (2.4%). Most literature was published between 2020 and 2023 (50.2%) with a peak addressing respiratory illnesses (264 publications) during this period. A trend in volume and type was observed based on public health emergencies associated with the publication year. Conclusions Peer-reviewed articles and guidance primarily address respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses, seagoing cruise ships and onboard populations. Gaps on the following topics exist: other infectious disease types; other passenger ship types; land-based personnel and port communities. Future research could assess risk factors and PMM measure effectiveness considering vaccine-preventable, vector-borne and sexually transmitted diseases. The evidence-base should be strengthened to produce guidelines targeting specificities of seaports, ferries, expedition and river cruise ships. Developing guidelines to standardise passenger ship outbreak investigation reporting could help evaluate PMM measure effectiveness, the impact of passenger ship travel on port communities and vice versa. Modern passenger ship experiences—from educational to elderly focused cruising—present diverse public health risks, requiring continuous efforts by public health authorities and the shipping industry. While outside the review’s scope, measures may impact travellers’ mental health, necessitating strategies when designing and implementing PMM measures.

The steep northern slopes of Giona Mt in central continental Greece are the result of an E-W normal fault dipping 35–45° to the north, extending from the Mornos River in the west to the village of Gravia in the east. This fault creates a significant elevation difference of approximately 1500 m between the northern Giona footwall and the southern Iti hanging wall. The footwall comprises imbricated Mesozoic carbonates of the Parnassos unit, which exhibit large-scale drag folding near and parallel to the fault. The hanging wall comprises deformed sedimentary rocks of the Beotian unit and tectonic klippen of the Eastern Greece unit, forming a southward-tilted neotectonic block with subsidence near the Northern Giona Fault and uplift near the Ypati fault to the north. These two E-W faults represent younger structures disrupting the older NNW-trending tectonic framework. Fault scarps are observed all along the 14 km length of the Northern Giona fault accompanied by cataclastic zones, separating the carbonate formations of the Parnassos Unit from thick scree, slide blocks, boulders and olistholites. Inversion of fault-slip data has shown a mean slip vector of 45°, N004°E, which aligns with the current regional extensional deformation of the area, as confirmed by focal mechanism solutions. Based on the general asymmetry of the alpine units in the hanging wall, we interpret a listric fault geometry at depth using slip-line analysis and we forward modelled a disrupted fault-propagation fold using kinematic trishear algorithms, estimating a total displacement of 6500 m and a throw of approximately 2000 m. Seismic activity in the area of the Northern Giona Fault includes a magnitude 6.1 earthquake in 1852, which caused casualties, rockfalls and extensive damage, as well as a magnitude 5.1 event in 1983. The expected seismic magnitude is deterministically estimated between 6.2 and 6.7, depending on the potential westward continuation of the Northern Giona Fault beyond the Mornos River to the Northern Vardoussia saddle. The seismic hazard zone includes several villages located near the fault, particularly on the hanging wall, where intense landslide activity during seismic events could result in severe damage to regional infrastructure. The neotectonic development of the Northern Giona Fault highlights the importance of extending seismotectonic research into the mountainous regions of central Greece within the alpine formations, beyond the post-orogenic sedimentary basins.

Aim: Focused ultrasound (FUS) therapies are often performed within magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems providing thermometry-based temperature monitoring. Herein, MRI thermometry was assessed for FUS sonications executed using a preclinical system on agar-based phantoms at 1.5T and 3T MRI scanners, using the proton resonance frequency shift technique. Materials and Methods: Sonications were executed at 1.5T and 3T to assess the system and observe variations in magnetic resonance (MR) thermometry temperature measurements. MR thermometry was assessed at 3T, for identical sonications on three agar-based phantoms doped with varied silica and evaporated milk concentrations, and for sonications executed at varied acoustic power of 1.5–45 W. Moreover, echo time (TE) values of 5–20 ms were used to assess the effect on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and temperature change sensitivity. Results: Clearer thermal maps with a 2.5-fold higher temporal resolution were produced for sonications at 3T compared to 1.5T, despite employment of similar thermometry sequences. At 3T, temperature changes between 41°C and 50°C were recorded for the three phantoms produced with varied silica and evaporated milk, with the addition of 2% w/v silica resulting in a 20% increase in temperature change. The lowest acoustic power that produced reliable beam detection within a voxel was 1.5 W. A TE of 10 ms resulted in the highest temperature sensitivity with adequate SNR. Conclusions: MR thermometry performed at 3T achieved short temporal resolution with temperature dependencies exhibited with the sonication and imaging parameters. Present data could be used in preclinical MRI-guided FUS feasibility studies to enhance MR thermometry.

Background: The main goal of the study was to find the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameters that optimize contrast between tissue and thermal lesions produced by focused ultrasound (FUS) using T1-weighted (T1-W) and T2-weighted (T2-W) fast spin echo (FSE) sequences. Methods: FUS sonications were performed in ex vivo porcine tissue using a single-element FUS transducer of 2.6 MHz in 1.5 and 3 T MRI scanners. The difference in relaxation times as well as the impact of critical MRI parameters on the resultant contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) between coagulated and normal tissues were assessed. Discrete and overlapping lesions were inflicted in tissue with simultaneous acquisition of T2-W FSE images. Results: FUS lesions are characterized by lower relaxation times than intact porcine tissue. CNR values above 80 were sufficient for proper lesion visualization. For T1-W imaging, repetition time values close to 1500 ms were considered optimum for obtaining sufficiently high CNR at the minimum time cost. Echo time values close to 50 ms offered the maximum lesion contrast in T2-W FSE imaging. Monitoring of acute FUS lesions during grid sonications was performed successfully. Lesions appeared as hypointense spots with excellent contrast from surrounding tissue. Conclusion: MRI monitoring of signal intensity changes during FUS sonication in grid patterns using optimized sequence parameters can provide useful information about lesion progression and the success of ablation. This preliminary study demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed monitoring method in ex vivo porcine tissue and should be supported by in vivo studies to assess its clinical potential.

Abstract Introduction Risankizumab has demonstrated superior efficacy compared to other psoriasis treatments, including secukinumab, adalimumab, and ustekinumab; switching to risankizumab from other psoriasis treatments has shown superior clinical and quality of life (QoL) outcomes. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of directly switching patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis and a suboptimal response to interleukin (IL)-17 inhibitors (secukinumab or ixekizumab) to risankizumab. Methods This 52-week, phase 3b study enrolled patients (≥ 18 years) with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis who had previously been treated with the recommended dose of secukinumab or ixekizumab for ≥ 6 months but did not achieve an optimal response (static Physician's Global Assessment [sPGA] 2/3; body surface are [BSA] 3–

Abstract The rise in global temperature and accumulation of petroleum-based wastes in the environment forces the scientific focus towards renewable alternatives. In the present work, an under-exploited resource – spruce bark – is investigated as a raw material for production of bio-oil as a liquid energy carrier. To enhance the energy-content of the produced bio-crude, ultimately being produced through hydrothermal liquefaction, the polysaccharides were extracted through organosolv fractionation and converted to lipids by oleaginous microorganisms. The effect originating from tannins was also investigated by performing a pre-extraction before the organosolv fractionation. It was found that performing the organosolv fractionation and upgrading the isolated organosolv lignin to bio-oil greatly reduced the oxygen content of the oil fraction thereby improving its energy content, and introducing upgraded polysaccharides in the form of lipids, as well as pre-extracted tannins, caused clear changes in the product distribution of the final bio-oil and kept a final product with low oxygen content. The other factor largely influencing the product distribution originated from the various heating rates tested by altering operational mode of the HTL process between batch and semi-continuous. Ultimately, performing the organosolv fractionation and individual upgrading of the polysaccharides had a beneficial effect on reducing the final solids content and enhancing the liquid oil yield.

Abstract Psychostimulants can be employed as a countermeasure to cognitive declines resulting from insufficient sleep. Although caffeine is the most consumed psychostimulant, consumption can cause adverse side-effects, including sleep disturbance. Therefore, there is interest in identifying alternative supplements that improve cognitive performance without compromising subsequent sleep. Here we investigate the influence of the dose and timing of theacrine consumption on cognitive performance and subsequent sleep using conditions that replicate a low (100 mg) and high (400 mg) dose consumed in the morning (12 h prior to bedtime), afternoon (eight hours prior to bedtime), and evening (four hours prior to bedtime). We found no significant effect of the low or high theacrine dose on subsequent sleep although the high dose showed small non-significant effects on sleep efficiency and wake after sleep onset at each timepoint of consumption. However, consuming theacrine within eight hours of bedtime improved next-morning cognitive performance, with the 400 mg dose reducing the number of lapses on the Psychomotor Vigilance Task, although there were no significant effects on reaction time. Our findings provide initial scientific evidence suggesting that theacrine consumption may improve some aspects of next-morning cognitive performance but not others, with small non-significant effects on nighttime sleep.

Abstract The relationship between structural and functional of parameters of skeletal muscles in young athletes needs further observations. The analyses of their age-group differences, sexual dimorphism, asymmetry characteristics in body regions, in sports having different pattern of physical loading could serve important information in this topic. 175 elite Hungarian handball players aged between 14 and 21 years were examined in 2023. Muscle mass component of the body segments was estimated by DEXA method and muscle thickness of the anterior mid-thigh region was measured by a new ultrasonic technique. The strength of knee extensor muscles was assessed by using an isokinetic protocol (Kineosystem dynamometer). A strong association between muscle robusticity and strength in the thigh region was confirmed in males, but not in females. Asymmetry in muscle mass reflected in the asymmetry in the knee extensor strength. A new predictive equation of muscle mass in the jumping leg and the total body from the muscle thickness in the anterior mid-thigh region of jumping leg was introduced. The exploration and understanding of asymmetric structural and functional adaptations can help athletes and trainers in planning the training and training interventions to reduce the risk of injuries.

Abstract Although organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are considered a mature technology, further enhancements in their efficiency are of paramount importance for advancing their incorporation in high-quality displays and flexible, wearable, electronic devices. In this regard, we propose an innovative approach, focusing on strategic modifications to the hole transport layer (HTL) through the integration of core-shell nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) encapsulated in a tungsten polyoxometalate compound (POM) are embedded within the prototype poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulphonate) (PEDOT:PSS) to form the modified HTL. Our work reveals the pivotal plasmonic role of Ag-NPs in enhancing OLED device performance based on commercially available conjugated polymers. Comprehensive analyses, including UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and electrical measurements, confirm the influence of the POM encapsulated Ag-NPs on improving the device efficiency. This is attributed to the synergistic influence of enhanced hole injection and conductivity and beneficial optical effects (i.e. the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) and, likely, light scattering of the POM-Ag NPs in the core-shell configuration, depending on their diameter), contributing to enhanced carrier balance and exciton recombination rate. Comparison with POM gold NPs (POM-Au NPs) highlights the distinct advantages of POM-Ag NPs. Our work reveals the potential of this innovative approach to contribute to the evolution of high-performance OLEDs, ensuring a visually compelling and efficient future.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report on bibliometric research on the activities and services offered by distance libraries that serve distance learning institutions. Design/methodology/approach – The analysis of scholarly communication has always been a valuable tool for researchers and policymakers in order to understand trends, gaps and patterns in a specific field. In this paper, a bibliometric analysis has been applied based on a well-known bibliometric tool called “VOSviewer.” The articles that constitute the dataset of current research were drawn from two journals: the Journal of Library Administration and the Journal of Library and Information Services in Distance Learning. Findings – The bibliometric analysis applied in distance libraries showed that the researchers in this domain are mainly introverts and need to prioritize engaging in the scientific research process over merely publishing good practices. Although there are a lot of libraries serving distance learning institutions (formal and non-formal), there is a notable lack of activity in the scientific publication field. Originality/value – Distance libraries have played a significant role in supporting distance learning, and since distance education has become more important in the educational ecosystem, the analysis of its scholarly production would provide administrators, researchers and policymakers with insights for the next era of conventional libraries.

Abstract The Western honey bee (Apis mellifera) subspecies exhibit local adaptive traits that evolved in response to the different environments that characterize their native distribution ranges. An important trait is the cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profile, which helps to prevent desiccation and mediate communication. We compared the CHC profiles of six European subspecies (A. m. mellifera, A. m. carnica, A. m. ligustica, A. m. macedonica, A. m. iberiensis, and A. m. ruttneri) and investigated potential factors shaping their composition. We did not find evidence of adaptation of the CHC profiles of the subspecies to the climatic conditions in their distribution range. Subspecies-specific differences in CHC composition might be explained by phylogenetic constraints or genetic drift. The CHC profiles of foragers were more subspecies-specific than those of nurse bees, while the latter showed more variation in their CHC profiles, likely due to the lower desiccation stress exerted by the controlled environment inside the hive. The strongest profile differences appeared between nurse bees and foragers among all subspecies, suggesting an adaptation to social task and a role in communication. Foragers also showed an increase in the relative amount of alkanes in their profiles compared to nurses, indicating adaptation to climatic conditions.

Abstract Background Arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM) are the most widespread terrestrial symbiosis and are both a key determinant of plant health and a major contributor to ecosystem processes through their role in biogeochemical cycling. Until recently, it was assumed that the fungi which form AM comprise the subphylum Glomeromycotina (G-AMF), and our understanding of the diversity and ecosystem roles of AM is based almost exclusively on this group. However recent evidence shows that fungi which form the distinctive 'fine root endophyte’ (FRE) AM morphotype are members of the subphylum Mucoromycotina (M-AMF), so that AM symbioses are actually formed by two distinct groups of fungi. Results We investigated the influence of nitrogen (N) addition and wheat variety on the assembly of AM communities under field conditions. Visual assessment of roots showed co-occurrence of G-AMF and M-AMF, providing an opportunity to compare the responses of these two groups. Existing ‘AM’ 18S rRNA primers which co-amplify G-AMF and M-AMF were modified to reduce bias against Mucoromycotina, and compared against a new ‘FRE’ primer set which selectively amplifies Mucoromycotina. Using the AM-primers, no significant effect of either N-addition or wheat variety on G-AMF or M-AMF diversity or community composition was detected. In contrast, using the FRE-primers, N-addition was shown to reduce M-AMF diversity and altered community composition. The ASV which responded to N-addition were closely related, demonstrating a clear phylogenetic signal which was identified only by the new FRE-primers. The most abundant Mucoromycotina sequences we detected belonged to the same Endogonales clades as dominant sequences associated with FRE morphology in Australia, indicating that closely related M-AMF may be globally distributed. Conclusions The results demonstrate the need to consider both G-AMF and M-AMF when investigating AM communities, and highlight the importance of primer choice when investigating AMF community dynamics.

Climate change has resulted in an increase in heat exposure globally. There is strong evidence that this increased heat stress is associated with poor maternal and fetal outcomes, especially in vulnerable populations. However, there remains poor understanding of the biological pathways and mechanisms involved in the impact of heat in pregnancy. This observational cohort study of 764 pregnant participants based in sub-Saharan Africa, a geographical region at risk of extreme heat events, aims to evaluate the physiological and biochemical changes that occur in pregnancy due to heat stress. The key objectives of the study are to 1) map exposure to heat stress in the cohort and understand what environmental, social and community factors increase the risk of extreme heat exposure; 2) assess the impact of heat stress on maternal health, e.g. heat strain, subjective psychological well-being, sleep and activity level; 3) evaluate how heat stress impacts placenta structure and function; 4) determine how chronic heat exposure impacts birth outcomes; and 5) explore the epigenetic changes in the placenta and infant by heat stress exposure per trimester. Pregnant women will be recruited from two distinct regions in The Gambia to exploit the naturally occurring heat gradient across the country. Microclimate mapping of the area of recruitment will give detailed exposure measurements. Participants will be asked to wear a watch-style device at 28- and 35-weeks gestational age to evaluate maternal heart rate, activity and sleep. At the end of the week, an ultrasound scan will be performed to evaluate fetal size and placental blood flow. At delivery, birth outcomes will be recorded and maternal, placental and cord samples taken for epigenetic, biochemical and histological evaluation. Evaluation of neuro-behaviour and final infant samples will be taken at 1 month following birth.

This is a case presentation of a primary central nervous system B-cell lymphoma in a 69-year-old woman with chronic lymphocytic inflammation with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids and chronic immunosuppressive treatment. The patient had been diagnosed as having probable chronic lymphocytic inflammation with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids, according to international criteria. Afterward, regular clinical and imaging examinations and blood tests were performed. The patient presented with primary central nervous system B-cell lymphoma 3 years after the initial diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic inflammation with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids. Brain tissue histology was indicative of diffuse giant B cells, Epstein–Barr virus positive, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The nature of chronic lymphocytic inflammation with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids is obscure, driving the formulation of many hypotheses about its causes. In our opinion, the presented case supports the putative neoplastic nature of the disease, at least in the long term, and/or along with Epstein–Barr virus involvement, which is known that have been related to other immune-mediated diseases such as multiple sclerosis and malignancies, especially with specific human leukocyte antigen haplotypes. Further research is needed and close monitoring of such patients is strongly recommended.

We revisit the construction of the renormalized trace Θ of the Energy-Momentum tensor in the four-dimensional λϕ4 theory, using dimensional regularization in d=4−ε dimensions. We first construct several basic correlators such as 〈ϕ2ϕϕ〉, 〈ϕ4ϕϕ〉 to order λ2 and from these the correlators 〈KIϕϕ〉 and 〈KIKJ〉 with KI the basis of dimension d operators. We then match the limit of their expressions on the Wilson-Fisher fixed point to the corresponding expressions obtained in Conformal Field Theory. Then, using the 3-point function 〈Θϕϕ〉, we construct the operator Θ as a certain linear combination of the basis operators, using the requirements that Θ should vanish on the fixed point and that it should have zero anomalous dimension. Finally, we compute the 2-point function 〈ΘΘ〉 and we show that it obeys an eigenvalue equation that gives additional information about the internal structure of the Energy-Momentum tensor operator to what is already contained in its Callan-Symanzik equation.

One of the main challenges in aquaculture is the constant search for sustainable alternative feed ingredients that can successfully replace fishmeal (FM) without any negative effects on fish growth and health. The goal of the present study was to develop a toolbox for rapidly anticipating the dynamics of fish growth following the introduction of a new feed; nonlethal, biochemical, and molecular markers that provide insights into physiological changes in the fish. A nutritional challenge by feeding a conventional feed rich in FM protein (FM diet) versus an experimental feed rich in plant protein (PP) and low FM inclusion (PP diet), in 20 different families of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) was performed. Fifteen and 30 days after the initiation of the nutritional challenge, the transcriptional response of gilthead seabream erythrocytes along with classical hematological biochemical markers were compared. Zootechnical, biochemical, and transcriptome data from each family under different dietary treatments were combined into a classification model to identify variables that can predict the growth rate at the end of the 14-month farming period (July 2018–September 2019). A highly accurate model was produced (A > 80%) based on the combination of seven markers (five molecular and two biochemical markers) and with high potential in separating faster and slower growing fish as early as 30 days after the initiation of feeding.

Mammalian hearing operates on three basic steps: 1) sound capturing, 2) impedance conversion, and 3) frequency analysis. While these canonical steps are vital for acoustic communication and survival in mammals, they are not unique to them. An equivalent mechanism has been described for katydids (Insecta), and it is unique to this group among invertebrates. The katydid inner ear resembles an uncoiled cochlea, and has a length less than 1 mm. Their inner ears contain the crista acustica, which holds tonotopically arranged sensory cells for frequency mapping via travelling waves. The crista acustica is located on a curved triangular surface formed by the dorsal wall of the ear canal. While empirical recordings show tonotopic vibrations in the katydid inner ear for frequency analysis, the biophysical mechanism leading to tonotopy remains elusive due to the small size and complexity of the hearing organ. In this study, robust numerical simulations are developed for an in silico investigation of this process. Simulations are based on the precise katydid inner ear geometry obtained by synchrotron-based micro-computed tomography, and empirically determined inner ear fluid properties for an accurate representation of the underlying mechanism. We demonstrate that the triangular structure below the hearing organ drives the tonotopy and travelling waves in the inner ear, and thus has an equivalent role to the mammalian basilar membrane. This reveals a stronger analogy between the inner ear basic mechanical networks of two organisms with ancient evolutionary differences and independent phylogenetic histories.

The mortality of trees in humid tropical forests plays a fundamental role in understanding forest development, particularly after disturbances such as those caused by logging and extreme weather events. The aim of this study was to evaluate estimates of individual tree mortality following Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) in the Eastern Brazilian Amazon at biennial intervals from 2005 to 2012. RIL is based on operations planning, personnel training, and investments in forest management, and harvesting through RIL must: (a) minimize environmental damage, (b) diminish operation cost by increasing work efficiency, and (c) reduce operational waste. A mortality model was constructed based on the estimation of three distance-independent competition-indices (DII) and five models for predicting the probability of individual tree mortality. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistical test was used to determine the most representative model, from which a Neural Network Autoregressive (NNAR) model was constructed to forecast mortality after RIL. Mortality data was correlated with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and climate (Rainfall, Maximum, Minimum, and Average air temperature). The tested models showed similar and accurate estimates with R2 exceeding 0.90, although underestimation and overestimation trends were observed. The NNAR satisfactorily represented species mortality over the simulated years. The period from 2012 to 2014 was characterized by a Neutral and Weak El Niño event, and exhibited the highest mortality value for a 25 cm DBH (diameter at breast height), the smallest DBH class measured in this study. In the correlation matrix analysis, maximum air temperature showed the highest positive correlation with trees mortality. Despite the challenges in estimating individual tree mortality in tropical forests after selective logging, accurate estimates were achieved using traditional regression techniques and NNAR. These results can support technical and silvicultural decisions regarding forest management in the Eastern Amazon region of Brazil.

This work aims to introduce a general theory of humor elicitation and appreciation, the play-mirth theory, which is based on the cognitive appraisal perspective. Two experiments test the theory’s central hypothesis: that is, to experience humor, one must interpret (a) a stimulus as a playful turn and (b) the turn as consistent with their motives. In the first experiment, 104 undergraduate students rated the appraisal determinants of successful and failed humor experiences that they recalled. In the second experiment, appraisals of playful turn (i.e., present or absent), situational state (i.e., motive-inconsistent/motive-consistent), and motivational state (punishment/reward) were manipulated. Overall, 150 undergraduate students were exposed to the manipulated stimuli and answered a structured questionnaire. The findings provide the first experimental evidence that two appraisals (i.e., playful turn and motive-consistency) do elicit humor. Play-mirth hypothesis sufficiently differentiates humorous from nonhumorous experiences as well as mirth from other positive emotions such as joy, and relief.

Abstract Anaerobic digestion (AD) technology can potentially address the gap between energy demand and supply playing a crucial role in the production of sustainable energy from utilization of biogenic waste materials as feedstock. The biogas production from anaerobic digestion is primarily influenced by the chemical compositions and biodegradability of the feedstock. Organosolv-steam explosion offers a constructive approach as a promising pretreatment method for the fractionation of lignocellulosic biomasses delivering high cellulose content.This study showed how synergetic co-digestion serves to overcome the challenges of mono-digestion's low efficiency. Particularly, the study evaluated the digestibility of organosolv-steam pretreated wheat straw (WSOSOL) in mono as well as co-digesting substrate with cheese whey (CW) and brewery spent grains (BSG). The highest methane yield was attained with co-digestion of WSOSOL + CW (338 mL/gVS) representing an enhanced biogas output of 1–1.15 times greater than its mono digestion. An ammonium production was favored under co-digestion strategy accounting for 921 mg/L from WSOSOL + BSG. Metagenomic study was conducted to determine the predominant bacteria and archaea, as well as its variations in their populations and their functional contributions during the AD process. The Firmicutes have been identified as playing a significant role in the hydrolysis process and the initial stages of AD. An enrichment of the most prevalent archaea genera enriched were Methanobacterium, Methanothrix, and Methanosarsina. Reactors digesting simpler substrate CW followed the acetoclastic, while digesting more complex substrates like BSG and WSOSOL followed the hydrogenotrophic pathway for biomethane production. To regulate the process for an enhanced AD process to maximize CH4, a comprehensive understanding of microbial communities is beneficial.

Objectives: This study discusses work performed within the context of the SAINT R&D project concerning the correlation of the prices of cybercrime services with the costs of investing in cyber security technologies. The main goal is to investigate how various financial and business-related cybercrime parameters relate to cybersecurity costs. In this context, the paper also examines the involved stakeholders and how they interact with each other. Methods/Analysis: Given the above considerations, from a theoretical standpoint, it is to describe a generic model for pricing illicit cybercrime products and services. This model, namely the Capacity Value Based Pricing (CVBP) model, has been proposed in the context of pricing “normal” products and services. Our study adapts this model suitably to apply the pricing modeling of illicit cybercrime products and services. Findings: The findings elucidate the professionalization of cybercrime, the significance of the emerging market for illicit services, and the pressing need for advanced AI methods to process qualitative data into quantitative insights. Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) graphene and graphene-related materials (GRMs) show great promise for future electronic devices. GRMs exhibit distinct properties under the influence of the substrate that serves as support through uneven compression/ elongation of GRMs surface atoms. Strain in GRM monolayers is the most common feature that alters the interatomic distances and band structure, providing a new degree of freedom that allows regulation of their electronic properties and introducing the field of straintronics. Having an all-optical and minimally invasive detection tool that rapidly probes strain in large areas of GRM monolayers, would be of great importance in the research and development of novel 2D devices. Here, we use Polarization-resolved Second Harmonic Generation (P-SHG) optical imaging to identify strain distribution, induced in a single layer of WS2 placed on a pre-patterned Si/SiO2 substrate with cylindrical wells. By fitting the P-SHG data pixel-by-pixel, we produce spatially resolved images of the crystal armchair direction. In regions where the WS2 monolayer conforms to the pattern topography, a distinct cross-shaped pattern is evident in the armchair image owing to strain. The presence of strain in these regions is independently confirmed using a combination of atomic force microscopy and Raman mapping.

Abstract Background Contemporary diagnostic frameworks in the realm of mental health have garnered criticism due to their categorical paradigm. Given the propensity of emotional disorders to manifest overlapping features, these frameworks fall short in comprehensively encapsulating their intricate nature. As a strategic response, Brown and Barlow introduced an innovative composite approach, amalgamating dimensions and categorical classifications, to adress this concern. Their strategic implementation hinged on the Multidimensional Emotional Disorder Inventory (MEDI), a transdiagnostic self-report instrument. Objective: this study undertakes the task of refining and validating the applicability of the MEDI within a non-clinical sample of Colombian university students (n = 808). Methods This study employed Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (ESEM) to explore the structure of the measure. Results: ESEM suggested that the 8-dimension model with 48 items was the best-fitting solution, aligning with most dimensions identified by the original MEDI validation. Reliability was adequate for almost all dimensions (α: 0.69 – 0.92). Abstract Total protein levels in fish are widely used in health and welfare studies, providing a simple and accessible measure. However, the multifaceted role of blood proteins makes it sometimes challenging to link total protein content to specific health issues, while specific protein fractions may offer more precise insights into fish biology and health, particularly in farmed fish species where such data is often lacking. Data were gathered from two experiments involving Dicentrarchus labrax and Sparus aurata, key species in European marine aquaculture. The aim was (1) to assess how different globulin fractions contribute to total protein content in blood and (2) how these contributions vary across different sampling times in healthy animals. In D. labrax, the beta1 globulin fraction emerged as the major contributor (34.16%), followed by albumin and alpha2 globulins (18.24% and 16.41%, respectively). In contrast, pre-albumins and alpha1 fractions had the least contribution (5.49% and 7.71%). S. aurata exhibited albumin as the primary contributor (23.39%), followed by beta1 and alpha2 globulins (19.71% and 19.15%, respectively), with gamma and alpha1 fractions contributing the least (5.34% and 8.63%). Notably, the study revealed relatively stable contributions of globulin fractions to total proteins within both species, albeit with minor variations over time, potentially linked to environmental and individual factors. Furthermore, larger fish displayed higher total protein levels. This research underscores the need for further investigation into the diverse factors influencing globulin contributions to total proteins, ultimately enhancing health and welfare monitoring for farmed fish species.

Introduction: Iris retraction syndrome (IRS) is a rare clinical condition characterized by a backbowing of the iris positioned on the lens with a complete pupillary block. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are a new class of immunomodulating agents used in cancer therapy, and although they have high response rates, ophthalmic-related side effects have been reported. We report a rare case of bilateral IRS with hypotony after therapy with nivolumab. Case Presentation: We present a case of bilateral IRS with hypotony, 3 mm Hg OD and 5 mm Hg OS, after therapy with nivolumab. The patient presented with decreased vision, corneal edema, keratic precipitates, deep anterior chamber with posterior synechiae, and hypotony maculopathy. Anterior segment OCT revealed a sharp posterior displacement of the iridolenticular diaphragm consistent with IRS. Discontinuation of nivolumab until ocular improvement was suggested, following oncologic consultation. Four months later, the patient exhibited iris bombé with angle closure and increased IOP. This was managed with phacoemulsification and concomitant surgical iridectomy. One month after surgery, the patient’s IOP had returned to physiologic values, and the iris configuration had returned to normal. Conclusion: The exact mechanism of IRS remains unclear, but it is suggested that an aqueous imbalance, in conjunction with uveitis and hypotony, creates an anterio-posterior movement of the iridolenticular diaphragm when the pupillary block is present. Our case highlights the importance of monitoring patients receiving ICIs for ophthalmic adverse effects and prompt management to prevent permanent visual damage. In conclusion, this is the first reported case of IRS after therapy with ICIs. Further research is needed to fully understand the exact mechanism by which it is induced.

Introduction: Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients harboring recessive gene variants exhibit a distinct clinical phenotype with an early disease onset and relatively mild symptoms. Data concerning individualized therapy for autosomal recessive PD forms are still scarce. Methods: Demographic and treatment data of a cohort of PD carriers of recessive genes (nine homozygous or compound heterozygous PRKN carriers, four heterozygous PRKN carriers, and three biallelic PINK1 carriers) were evaluated. Results: The average levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD) was 806.8 ± 453.5 (range 152–1810) in PRKN carriers and 765 ± 96.6 (range 660–850) in PINK1 carriers. The majority responded to low/moderate doses of levodopa. The response to dopamine agonists (DAs) was often favorable both as initial and longitudinal therapy. In total, 8/13 PRKN and 1/3 PINK1 carriers were treated with amantadine successfully, and this also applied to patients who could not tolerate levodopa or DAs. Conclusions: In the era of personalized treatment, the therapeutic approach in recessive PD gene carriers might differ as compared to idiopathic PD. Lower LEDD doses were efficient even in patients with a very long disease duration, while a few patients were doing well without any levodopa treatment decades after disease initiation. DAs or amantadine could be used as a first and main line treatment regimen if well tolerated. Literature data on therapeutic strategies in carriers of pathogenic mutations in recessive PD genes, including device-aided treatments, will be further discussed.

La transformación digital en el sector público es crucial para mejorar la eficiencia, la transparencia y la participación ciudadana en la prestación de servicios gubernamentales. Sin embargo, la falta de comprensión de las mejores prácticas en la implementación de estas estrategias puede obstaculizar su éxito y limitar su impacto. Este estudio tiene como objetivo explorar la percepción sobre las mejores prácticas en la implementación de estrategias de transformación digital en el sector público, con el fin de identificar lecciones aprendidas y recomendaciones para mejorar las iniciativas futuras. Se identificaron prácticas clave: una visión clara y una dirección estratégica sólida, un enfoque integral que aborda múltiples dimensiones de la transformación digital, y la promoción de la participación ciudadana y la transparencia en el proceso. Abstract Background Obstructive defecation syndrome (ODS) defines a disturbed defecation process frequently associated with pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in women that substantially compromises quality of life. Conservative management offers limited relief and a surgical intervention may be required. This is characterized by individual approaches. Aim of the study This retrospective single center study evaluated the surgical and clinical short-term outcome of a novel interdisciplinary laparoscopic resection rectopexy (L-RRP) with mesh- sacrocolpopexy (L-SCP) for women suffering from ODS and POP. Methods The study participants underwent surgery in an interdisciplinary laparoscopic approach. Safety was the primary endpoint, assessed via postoperative morbidity classified by Clavien-Dindo scale. Secondary outcomes included evaluation of bowel function, fecal and urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse status at 12 months follow-up. Additionally, a biological mesh (BM) was offered to women, who asked for an alternative to synthetic mesh material (SM). Results Of the 44 consecutive patients requiring surgery for ODS and POP, 36 patients underwent the interdisciplinary surgical approach; 28 patients with SM and 8 patients with BM. In total 5 complications occurred, four of them were classified as minor. One minor complication was observed in the BM group. One anastomotic leakage occurred in the SM group. Cigarette smoking is a risk factor for several diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), however, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Alternative nicotine products with reduced risk potential (RRPs) including tobacco heating products (THPs), and e-cigarettes have recently emerged as viable alternatives to cigarettes that may contribute to the overall strategy of tobacco harm reduction due to the significantly lower levels of toxicants in these products’ emissions as compared to cigarette smoke. Assessing the effects of RRPs on biological responses is important to demonstrate the potential value of RRPs towards tobacco harm reduction. Here, we evaluated the inflammatory and signaling responses of human lung epithelial cells to aqueous aerosol extracts (AqE) generated from the 1R6F reference cigarette, the glo™ THP, and the Vype ePen 3.0 e-cigarette using multiplex analysis of 37 inflammatory and phosphoprotein markers. Cellular exposure to the different RRPs and 1R6F AqEs resulted in distinct response profiles with 1R6F being the most biologically active followed by glo™ and ePen 3.0. 1R6F activated stress-related and pro-survival markers c-JUN, CREB1, p38 MAPK and MEK1 and led to the release of IL-1α. glo™ activated MEK1 and decreased IL-1β levels, whilst ePen 3.0 affected IL-1β levels but had no effect on the signaling activity compared to untreated cells. Our results demonstrated the reduced biological effect of RRPs and suggest that targeted analysis of inflammatory and cell signaling mediators is a valuable tool for the routine assessment of RRPs.

Abstract We conducted spatial immune tumor microenvironment (iTME) profiling using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples of 25 KRAS-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), including 12 responders and 13 non-responders. An eleven-marker panel (CD3, CD4, CD8, FOXP3, CD68, arginase-1, CD33, HLA-DR, pan-keratin (PanCK), PD-1, and PD-L1) was used to study the tumor and immune cell compositions. Spatial features at single cell level with cellular neighborhoods and fractal analysis were determined. Spatial features and different subgroups of CD68+ cells and FOXP3+ cells being associated with response or resistance to ICIs were also identified. In particular, CD68+ cells, CD33+ and FOXP3+ cells were found to be associated with resistance. Interestingly, there was also significant association between non-nuclear expression of FOXP3 being resistant to ICIs. We identified CD68dim cells in the lung cancer tissues being associated with improved responses, which should be insightful for future studies of tumor immunity.

Abstract A collection of feed forward neural networks (FNN) for estimating the limit pressure load and the according displacements at limit state of a footing settlement is presented. The training procedure is through supervised learning with error loss function the mean squared error norm. The input dataset is originated from Monte Carlo simulations for a variety of loadings and stochastic uncertainty of the material of the clayey soil domain. The material yield function is the Modified Cam Clay model. The accuracy of the FNN’s is in terms of relative error no more than $$10^{-5}$$ 10 - 5 and this applies to all output variables. Furthermore, the epochs of the training of the FNN’s required for construction are found to be small in amount, in the order of magnitude of 90,000, leading to an alleviated data cost and computational expense. The input uncertainty of Karhunen Loeve random field sum appears to provide the most detrimental values for the displacement field of the soil domain. The most unfavorable situation for the displacement field result to limit displacements in the order of magnitude of 0.05 m, that may result to structural collapse if they appear to the founded structure. These series can provide an easy and reliable estimation for the failure of shallow foundation and therefore it can be a useful implement for geotechnical engineering analysis and design.

Abstract A link between chronic stress and Parkinson’s disease (PD) pathogenesis is emerging. Ample evidence demonstrates that the presynaptic neuronal protein alpha-synuclein (asyn) is closely tied to PD pathogenesis. However, it is not known whether stress system dysfunction is present in PD, if asyn is involved, and if, together, they contribute to neurodegeneration. To address these questions, we assess stress axis function in transgenic rats overexpressing full-length wildtype human asyn (asyn BAC rats) and perform multi-level stress and PD phenotyping following chronic corticosterone administration. Stress signaling, namely corticotropin-releasing factor, glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptor gene expression, is also examined in post-mortem PD patient brains. Overexpression of human wildtype asyn leads to HPA axis dysregulation in rats, while chronic corticosterone administration significantly aggravates nigrostriatal degeneration, serine129 phosphorylated asyn (pS129) expression and neuroinflammation, leading to phenoconversion from a prodromal to an overt motor PD phenotype. Interestingly, chronic corticosterone in asyn BAC rats induces a robust, twofold increase in pS129 expression in the hypothalamus, the master regulator of the stress response, while the hippocampus, both a regulator and a target of the stress response, also demonstrates elevated pS129 asyn levels and altered markers of stress signalling. Finally, defective hippocampal stress signalling is mirrored in human PD brains and correlates with asyn expression levels. Taken together, our results link brain stress system dysregulation with asyn and provide evidence that elevated circulating glucocorticoids can contribute to asyn-induced neurodegeneration, ultimately triggering phenoconversion from prodromal to overt PD.

Abstract Background The research criteria for subjective cognitive decline (SCD) exclude mild cognitive impairment (MCI), but do not stipulate the use of specific MCI criteria. This study compared different approaches to defining (i.e., excluding) MCI during the ascertainment of SCD, focusing on the impact on dementia incidence rates in SCD. Methods This cohort study utilized routine healthcare data collected in the Essex Memory Clinic from 1999 to 2023. Two different operationalizations of the SCD criteria were used to categorize the cohort into two SCD patient samples. One sample was based on local clinical practice – MCI was excluded according to the Winblad criteria (this sample was termed SCDWinblad). The other sample was created via the retrospective application of the Jak/Bondi criteria for the exclusion of MCI (termed SCDJak/Bondi). Only patients aged ≥ 55 years at baseline with ≥ 12 months follow-up were considered for inclusion. The initial clinical/demographic characteristics of the samples were compared. Rates of incident dementia were calculated for each sample, and unadjusted and Mantel-Haenszel-adjusted incidence rate ratios were calculated to compare dementia incidence between the SCD samples. Results The Essex Memory Clinic database included 2,233 patients in total. The SCD and study eligibility criteria were used to select SCDWinblad (n = 86) and SCDJak/Bondi (n = 185) samples from the database. Median follow-up (3 years) did not differ between the two samples. The SCDJak/Bondi sample was significantly older than the SCDWinblad at first assessment (median age: 74 versus 70 years) and had poorer scores on tests of global cognition, immediate and delayed verbal recall, and category fluency. Following adjustment for age, the dementia incidence rate ratio [95% confidence interval] was 3.7 [1.5 to 9.3], indicating a significantly greater rate of progression to dementia in SCDJak/Bondi. Conclusions This study highlights that the approach used to ascertain SCD has important implications for both SCD phenotypes and prognosis. This underscores the importance of how MCI is operationalized within SCD studies. More broadly, the findings add to a growing body of work indicating that objective cognition should not be overlooked in SCD, and offer a potential explanation for the heterogeneity across the SCD prognostic literature.

Abstract Background Chronic migraine (CM) is the most severe and burdensome subtype of migraine. Fremanezumab is a monoclonal antibody that targets the calcitonin gene-related peptide pathway as a migraine preventive therapy. This study aimed to conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis of fremanezumab from a societal perspective in the Netherlands, using a Markov cohort simulation model. Methods The base-case cost-effectiveness analysis adhered to the Netherlands Authority guidelines. Fremanezumab was compared with best supportive care (BSC; acute migraine treatment only) in patients with CM and an inadequate response to topiramate or valproate and onabotulinumtoxinA (Dutch patient group [DPG]). A supportive analysis was conducted in the broader group of CM patients with prior inadequate response to 2–4 different classes of migraine preventive treatments. One-way sensitivity, probabilistic sensitivity, and scenario analyses were conducted. Results Over a lifetime horizon, fremanezumab is cost saving compared with BSC in the DPG (saving of €2514 per patient) and led to an increase of 1.45 quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). In the broader supportive analysis, fremanezumab was cost effective compared with BSC, with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of €2547/QALY gained. Fremanezumab remained cost effective in all sensitivity and scenario analyses. Conclusion In comparison to BSC, fremanezumab is cost saving in the DPG and cost effective in the broader population.

Purpose: The current study provides insights into the challenges of safely operating a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) robotic system in a high-field MRI scanner in terms of robotic motion accuracy. Materials and Methods: Grid sonications were carried out in phantoms and excised porcine tissue in a 3T MRI scanner using an existing MRgFUS robotic system. Fast low-angle shot-based magnetic resonance thermometry was employed for the intraprocedural monitoring of thermal distribution. Results: Strong shifting of the heated spots from the intended points was observed owing to electromagnetic interference (EMI)-induced malfunctions in system’s operation. Increasing the slice thickness of the thermometry sequence to at least 8 mm was proven an efficient method for preserving the robotic motion accuracy. Conclusions: These findings raise awareness about EMI effects on the motion accuracy of MRgFUS robotic devices and how they can be mitigated by employing suitable thermometry parameters.

The smart shipping and maritime technology encompass blockchain and smart contracts technology, information perception technology, intelligent decision-making technology, intelligent routing technology, marine communication network security technology, route planning technology, autonomous navigation technology, state monitoring and fault diagnosis technology and so on. Nevertheless, these advancements bring practical and legal challenges, as well as a new threat in the digital age: cybercrime. This paper deals with the key challenges and opportunities associated with the integration of digital technologies in shipping and transport such as smart contracts and unmanned ships, and how do cyber issues impact the safety, security, and efficiency of maritime operations. The first part examines the technological background into which smart contracts are integrated and operate, i.e. the terms blockchain and technology distributed ledger technology. The concept, the mechanism and the types of smart contracts in the maritime industry are further analysed. Also, the aspects of new technologies such as Autonomous Vessels and the challenges they raise are examined. The second part focuses on the legal potential of smart contracts examining their issues and the cyber challenges in the maritime industry. The critical remarks and conclusions drawn are listed at the end of the paper.

The focus on sustainability and circular economy renders the microalgal biorefinery concept highly attractive. Although the diversity of microalgal composition makes them ideal feedstocks, their metabolic versatility challenges bioprocess optimization. To address this, an integrated, strain-specific approach was used to evaluate key cultivation parameters (nitrogen source, C/N ratio, and light intensity) as their interactions affect growth performance and biochemical composition. Heterotrophic cultivation of A. protothecoides (AP) and C. sorokiniana (CS) in glucose showed enhanced cell growth with organic N-sources. Biomass was consistently elevated across C/N ratios from 5 to 60 with corn steep liquor (CSL) (8.1 g L-1) and yeast extract (YE) (7.0 g L-1), while with urea it maximized at C/N 5 (6.2 g L-1). Protein synthesis increased at C/N 5, whereas lipid accumulation at C/N 60. Beechwood hydrolysate, a renewable glucose alternative, produced an average of 4.1 g L-1 protein (C/N 5) and 3.5 g L-1 lipids (C/N 60) between YE and CSL. Mixotrophic cultivation indicated better photosynthetic adaptation of AP at C/N 5, yielding 13.2 g L-1 biomass at 400 μmol m-2 s-1, whereas at C/N 60 growth was favored at 50 μmol m-2 s-1. The fatty acid profile of microalgal oil revealed de novo biosynthesis of odd-chain fatty acids at C/N 5 in both cultivation modes, while biodiesel-grade lipids produced in heterotrophic condition. These findings advance microalgal bioprocessing by emphasizing the importance of fine-tuning cultivation strategies and utilizing renewable nutrients to maximize resource efficiency and optimize the biosynthesis of valuable bioproducts, such as proteins, pigments, carbohydrates, and high-quality lipids.

The fish industry is now attempting to produce value-added fishery products with potential functional properties for consumers using agro-food by-products as healthy ingredients in aquafeed. Herein, microbial communities, microbial populations, sensory attributes and physicochemical e.g., Total Volatile Basic Nitrogen (TVB-N) and Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS) profile of fillets from gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) previously fed with a fraction of polar lipids extracted from olive-oil industry by-products (enriched fish, hereafter) were examined during storage at 2 °C and compared with conventional sea bream fillets, in order to monitor quality changes and assess shelf-life. The end of the shelf-life was determined at 7 and 9 days of storage for the enriched and the conventional fillets, respectively. Results indicated no significant differences in any of the studied parameters between the enriched and conventional fish fillets. Based on the 16S metabarcoding analysis, Pseudomonas was the most dominant microorganism in both conventional and enriched fillets at the rejection time. TVB-N reached levels of ∼23.5 mg N / 100 g in both cases. Overall, the findings of the present work enhance the production of such fishery products, opening a new era in aquaculture industry that undoubtedly deserves further attention in the future.

Climate change has resulted in an increase in heat exposure globally. There is strong evidence that this increased heat stress is associated with poor maternal and fetal outcomes, especially in vulnerable populations. However, there remains poor understanding of the biological pathways and mechanisms involved in the impact of heat in pregnancy. This observational cohort study of 764 pregnant participants based in sub-Saharan Africa, a geographical region at risk of extreme heat events, aims to evaluate the physiological and biochemical changes that occur in pregnancy due to heat stress. The key objectives of the study are to 1) map exposure to heat stress in the cohort and understand what environmental, social and community factors increase the risk of extreme heat exposure; 2) assess the impact of heat stress on maternal health, e.g. heat strain, subjective psychological well-being, sleep and activity level; 3) evaluate how heat stress impacts placenta structure and function; 4) determine how chronic heat exposure impacts birth outcomes; and 5) explore the epigenetic changes in the placenta and infant by heat stress exposure per trimester. Pregnant women will be recruited from two distinct regions in The Gambia to exploit the naturally occurring heat gradient across the country. Microclimate mapping of the area of recruitment will give detailed exposure measurements. Participants will be asked to wear a watch-style device at 28- and 35-weeks gestational age to evaluate maternal heart rate, activity and sleep. At the end of the week, an ultrasound scan will be performed to evaluate fetal size and placental blood flow. At delivery, birth outcomes will be recorded and maternal, placental and cord samples taken for epigenetic, biochemical and histological evaluation. Evaluation of neuro-behaviour and final infant samples will be taken at 1 month following birth.

Prior studies indicate that fostering change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior (OCB-CH) among employees, wherein they actively contribute to the collective welfare of modern organizations, correlates positively with their positive affect. However, the precise mechanisms linking trait positive affect with OCB-CH remain unclear. This study used aggregated 5-day daily diary data from a sample of 236 full-time employees in Greece to examine positive affectivity differences in the characteristics of situational experiences and how these differences relate to employee OCB-CH via the use of emotions to facilitate performance. Employing multilevel structural equation modeling, the findings revealed a positive association between trait positive affectivity and the situation characteristics of duty, intellect, and positivity, from the DIAMONDS taxonomy. Furthermore, it was determined that perceptions of situational characteristics and emotional utilization sequentially mediated the relationship between positive affectivity and OCB-CH. This study enhances our understanding of how employee trait positive affectivity influences the manifestation of positive change in the form of OCB-CH within organizations.
