The beam self-cleaning phenomenon is theoretically predicted by the two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which describes self-focusing, and is observed in the case of femtosecond laser filamentation in the collimated regime of propagation. However, the impact of external focusing on the self-cleaning has not been investigated so far. In this paper we systematically study this impact in a wide range of focusing conditions. We show that the energy range, in which self-cleaning can be observed, shrinks monotonically with the numerical aperture growth at some point vanishing at all.

In this paper, we measure broadband terahertz spectra from a single 744-nm filament produced in tight, medium, and loose geometrical focusing conditions. Terahertz spectra are measured using interferometer coupled to a helium-cooled bolometer avoiding any cutoff frequencies. Based on THz spectrum maximum position and spectral width, we estimate electron-heavy particle (neutrals and ions) collision rate. Numerical simulations are performed using the state-of-the-art model of unidirectional femtosecond pulse propagation and convergence/divergence of optical radiation at large angles.

The paper demonstrates results of our experimental study of THz emission from the plasma of a single-color laser filament for two laser wavelengths of 740 and 940 nm. Particular attention is paid to the study of a frequency-angular distribution of the THz emission within 0.1 – 3 THz spectral range. It is observed that different spectral components of THz radiation have different angular distribution, and an increase in the laser beam numerical aperture leads to a growth of the THz emission divergence, especially in its low-frequency range. The study revealed a significant effect of a laser pulse initial wavelength on the THz emission characteristics. Transformation of frequency-angular THz emission spectrum produced by a single-color (740 nm) laser filament plasma under an external electrostatic field of various strength is also experimentally studied. If there is no static electric field, THz emission is predominantly generated in the low-frequency spectral range around 0.1 THz and propagates within a hollow cone. When the electric field is applied, the transition from the hollow cone to a filled one is observed with the field strength rise, THz emission frequency being within of 0.3 - 0.5 THz. Higher frequency emission of ~1 THz fills the whole cone with the emission maximum along the laser filament axis. Furthermore, the angular distribution for the low-frequency THz emission depends significantly on the laser pulse energy in contrast to the case of no electric field. Namely, the laser pulse energy rise results in a decrease of the propagation angles for low-frequency THz emission and disappearance of the local minimum in the angular distribution on the propagation axis.

We study the angular distribution of different spectral components of the terahertz emission from a single-color laser filament plasma. The opening angle of a terahertz cone is experimentally demonstrated to be proportional to the inverse square root of both plasma channel length and terahertz frequency in the non-linear focusing mode, whereas in the case of linear focusing this dependence breaks down. We also experimentally show that any conclusions of terahertz radiation spectral composition require the angle range from which it is collected to be specified.

International audience; We experimentally observed laser-induced remote high-voltage discharge triggering between two needle electrodes with half-a-cm spacing. The discharge was initiated by a 744-nm, 90-fs, 6-mJ laser pulse undergoing filamentation in air. For the direct voltage below the self-breakdown threshold, triggering of air-gap discharge was synchronized with a 10-Hz laser repetition rate and occurred between 40 and 80 m of the propagation path. No discharge guiding was observed. The experimentally registered and simulated remote triggering probability was above 80% in the range of 45–60 m from laser output and about 50% in the range of 60–80 m. The probability decreases as the postfilament hot spot diverges with a simultaneous increase in stochastic laser beam wandering.

Propagation of a tightly focused high-power ultrashort laser pulse in an optical medium is usually substantially influenced by the medium optical nonlinearity that can noticeably affect the laser pulse parameters around the nonlinear focus and lead to unavoidable and often undesirable spatial distortions of the focal waist. We present the results of our experimental study and numerical simulations on a femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser pulse propagation in air under different spatial focusing. We concentrated our study on spectral-angular and spatial pulse transformations under different focusing regimes - from linear to nonlinear one, when pulse filamentation occurs. For the first time to the best of our knowledge, we found the laser pulse numerical apertures range – namely, from NA = 2·10-3 to 5 10-3(for the laser pulse energy of 1 mJ), where the laser pulse distortions both in frequency-angular spectrum and pulse spatial shape are minimal. By means of the numerical simulations, we found the threshold pulse energy and peak power in a wide range of focusing conditions, within which a transition between the linear and strongly nonlinear laser pulse focusing in air takes place. This energy limit is shown to decrease with pulse numerical aperture enhancement. Our findings identify the laser pulse numerical apertures and energes adequate for getting a maximum laser intensity with a good beam quality around the focal point suitable for various laser micropatterning and micromachining technologies.

Frequency-angular distributions for THz emission in the range of 0.1–3 THz generated in a single-color laser filament plasma both under an electrostatic field and without one are experimentally studied for what we believe is the first time. The angular distribution for various spectral components of this THz emission is demonstrated to differ significantly. The maximal propagation angles for these components increase under the electric field. The angular distribution for the low-frequency THz emission depends significantly on the laser pulse energy in contrast to the case of no electric field. An increase in the laser pulse energy leads to a decrease of the propagation angles for low-frequency THz emission and to disappearance of the local minimum in the angular distribution on the propagation axis.

Pulses at 744 nm with 90 fs duration, 6 mJ energy, and a weakly divergent wavefront propagate for more than 100 m and generate a filament followed by an unprecedently long high intensity ( ≥ 1 T W / c m 2 ) light channel. Over a 20 m long sub-section of this channel, the pulse energy is transferred continuously to the infrared wing, forming spectral humps that extend up to 850 nm. From 3D+time carrier-resolved simulations of 100 m pulse propagation, we show that spectral humps indicate the formation of a train of femtosecond pulses appearing at a predictable position in the propagation path.

International audience; Postfilamentation channel resulting from filamentation of freely propagating 744-nm, 5-mJ, 110-fs pulse in the corridor air is examined experimentally and in simulations. The longitudinal extension of postfilament was determined to be 55–95 m from the compressor output. Using single-shot angle-wavelength spectra measurements, we observed a series of red-shifted maxima in the spectrum, localized on the beam axis with the divergence below 0.5 mrad. In the range 55–70 m, the number of maxima and their red-shift increase with the distance reaching 1 μm, while the pulse duration measured by the autocorrelation technique is approximately constant. Further on, for distances larger than 70 m and up to 95 m, the propagation is characterized by the suppressed beam divergence and unchanged pulse spectrum. The pulse duration increases due to the normal air dispersion.

A design of high-efficient solid-state source of sub-picosecond ~10-μm wavelength laser pulse is presented. It is based on difference frequency generation in LiGaS 2 nonlinear crystal of ~0.5 μm wavelength laser pulse and its Raman-shifted pulse produced in BaWO 4 crystal. Numerical efficiency of the laser system was estimated to be ~1-2% at experimentally demonstrated efficiency of the Raman shifter ~20%.

Spectra of THz radiation generated in a single-color filament are experimentally studied. It is shown that the spectra of THz emission depend on the wavelength of laser radiation and the focusing conditions and do not depend on the pulse energy.

We for the first time theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate that selective, low-threshold excitation and interference between short-wavelength plasmons on silicon surfaces photoexcited by infrared femtosecond laser pulses give rise to appearance of permanent sub-diffraction surface gratings with their periods down to 100 nm, dramatically differing from near-wavelength surface gratings succeeding the common “laser photon-surface polariton” interference. Such selectivity was provided in this work by in situ white-light (supercontinuum) femtosecond source generated in a multi-filamentation regime in a thin water layer atop the silicon surface, supporting high-efficiency excitation and dynamic tracking of the transiently tunable plasmon resonance on silicon surface for its easy, robust and ultimate surface nanopatterning.

Sub-nanosecond luminescence of Mn2+ in Mn-, Sn/Mn-, and Cu/Mn-doped Li2B4O7 ceramics is observed under laser excitation. Picosecond pulsed laser radiation (350–370 nm) generates the frequency-doubled radiation directly in a single microcrystal selected in a ceramic sample, with this secondary radiation falling within the impurity-induced VUV excitation bands of doped Li2B4O7. These excitation bands are attributed to the creation of an impurity-bound intra-anionic exciton in MeiO4–BO3–MnLi complex centres (Mei = Mn, Sn, or Cu). The exciton, in turn, interacts with a nearby Mn2+ ion due to mixing of the Mn2+ excited states with the excitonic states. Exciton annihilation involves Mn2+ energy levels as transient states and causes a sub-nanosecond radiative transition which is accelerated, being accompanied by rearrangement of the surrounding atoms. Excitation within the lower-energy bands is related to the other part of the complex luminescence centre, this is metal-to-ligand intra-anionic charge transfer, which makes an electron accessible to MnLi, while the hole is transferred only during relaxation of the excited structure. Mn2+ radiative transitions are not forced in the latter case, and slow Mn2+ luminescence decay is observed.

The long-term time behavior of the output power of a sealed-off cryogenic slab CO laser pumped by a repetitively pulsed RF discharge and operating on the overtone (λ = 2.6–3.5 μm) vibrational−rotational transitions of the CO molecule was studied experimentally. It is shown that adding of an anomalously large amount of oxygen (up to 50% with respect to the CO concentration) to the initial gas mixture CO : He = 1 : 10 leads to a manyfold (by several tens of times) increase in the duration of the laser operating cycle (until lasing failure due to the degradation of the active medium). In this case, the laser life-time without replacement of the active medium reaches 105–106 pulses. Using various diagnostics (including luminescence spectroscopy and IR and UV absorption spectroscopy), regularities in the time-behavior of the concentrations of the main component of the active medium (CO molecules) and the products of plasmachemical reactions (O3, CO2) generated in the discharge gap during the laser operating cycle are revealed. Time correlation between the characteristics of the active medium and the laser output power are analyzed. A phenomenological approach to describing the entirety of plasmachemical, purely chemical, gas-dynamic, and diffusion processes determining the behavior of the laser output characteristics throughout the laser operating cycle is offered.

Nonlinear self-focusing of sub-TW power, sub-ps UV pulses generated by Ti:Sapphire/KrF GARPUN-MTW laser facility produces a few hundred randomly distributed filament-like weakly ionized plasma channels in atmospheric air. Arrangement of occasional multiple filaments has been demonstrated by means of amplitude masks with periodic circular and square apertures introduced in the light beam. Diffraction on the apertures overcomes natural stochastic and deterministic radiation inhomogeneities and builds up a regular array of a few hundred filaments persisting over 20 m.

Results of laboratory and numerical experiments on the multiple filamentation of high-power pulse Ti:Sapphire laser radiation (740 nm) in air are presented. The postfilamentation stage of pulse propagation in the form of intensive spatially localized light structures is investigated. The angular divergence of postfilamentation channels is studied under variation in the initial laser beam focusing. The threshold distance for the refilamentation of postfilamentation channels in a glass plate is measured.

Emission of THz radiation from a single-color ultraviolet (248 nm) and infrared (744 nm) filament in air is studied experimentally and compared at similar pulse durations, focusing conditions and excess of peak pulse power over the critical power for self-focusing. An angular distribution of the terahertz emission for both ultraviolet and infrared pump is conical with the closed cone angle. In contrast, the terahertz radiation energy and spectrum differ significantly. The energy of terahertz emission from ultraviolet filament is 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than the terahertz yield from the infrared filament. The terahertz spectrum of ultraviolet filament is shifted to the low-frequency range and narrower as compared to the spectrum of terahertz emission from infrared filament. We explain qualitatively the difference in terahertz yields and spectra by lower intensity and plasma density in the ultraviolet filament. Similar behavior of THz spectra is observed when changing the IR filament parameters.

Different frequency conversion processes in the mid-IR were experimentally studied with slab RF discharge CO and CO2 lasers and various nonlinear crystals ZnGeP2, GaSe, BaGa2GeSe6, AgGaSe2 and PbIn6Te10 : second and third harmonic generation of CO laser; sum and difference frequency generation of CO and CO2 lasers. Mid-IR emission on hundreds of narrow spectral lines from 1.7 μm to 19.3 μm was obtained

Nonlinear frequency conversion of broadband mid-IR radiation of different molecular gas lasers by various nonlinear crystals converting their multi-line emission into broadband radiation on sum and difference frequencies within ∼ 1.7 – 17 micron is discussed.

Broadband frequency downconversion of a 90 fs 744 nm Ti:sapphire laser pulse into the mid-infrared (IR) was demonstrated via its filamentation-induced self-frequency shift in air and subsequent intra-pulse difference frequency generation in a L i G a S 2 crystal. The filamentation of the laser pulse in air provided its continuous spectral broadening to the Stokes wing with spectral humps separated by ∼ 1000 c m − 1 that was appropriate for the laser pulse difference frequency conversion into the mid-IR. The difference frequency emission spectrum spanned from 8.5 to 13.5 µm at the e − 2 level. The transform limited pulse duration of the mid-IR pulse was 47 fs, which corresponded to a 1.3-cycle laser pulse. Energy conversion efficiency was up to 10 − 4 and 5 ⋅ 10 − 4 without and with chirp compensation, respectively.

We experimentally compare spectrum conversion of an ultrashort laser pulse under its filamentation in various gases. The laser pulse propagation through both atomic and molecular gases is observed to result in a separated local maximum formation in the long-wavelength spectral wing. This redshifted hump is more noticeable and does have a higher amplitude under the laser pulse filamentation just in molecular gases as compared to atomic ones. Therefore, we claim that the laser pulse self-phase modulation plays a crucial role in the formation of such a hump, while the Raman scattering in molecular gases enhances this process efficiency.

Focused propagation of a high-power ultrashort laser pulse is strongly influenced by optical medium nonlinearity that can significantly affect pulse parameters in the focusing region as compared to the linear focusing regime. We present the results of our experimental study and numerical simulations of frequency-angular patterns and laser plasma distribution of a gigawatt-power femtosecond Ti-sapphire laser pulse propagating in air under various focusing conditions. For the first time to the best of our knowledge, we found experimentally and confirm theoretically the range of pulse numerical aperture (NA), from approximately NA = 2 ⋅ 10−3 to 5 ⋅ 10−3, when both frequency and angular spectra broadening during supercritical laser pulse focusing in air is minimal. We attribute this NA-range to the transition region between quasilinear and nonlinear pulse focusing regimes. Additionally, the energy threshold for different pulse focusing regimes in the wide range of focusing conditions is obtained for the first time through the numerical simulations. This threshold is demonstrated to decrease with pulse NA increase.

Two new methods for the formation of nanotip arrays under the action of single or double femtosecond laser pulses on a surface of bulk aluminum are presented. It is shown that a key role in the formation of nanotips is played by the excitation of surface electromagnetic waves and their mutual interference, and by their interference with the exciting electromagnetic field of the laser pulse.

Electric collector investigations of the singleand multi-shot femtosecond laser ablation of optical-quality surfaces of different materials, including aluminum, copper, titanium, silicon, and graphite, show that the emission of erosion plasma is significantly lower than the energy density of laser ablation of these materials and replaces the dominant electron emission at lower energy densities. I–V characteristics and cumulative dependences of the collector signal are studied in the emission mode. The observed dependences of the electron and plasma emission signals on the laser pulse energy density are discussed.

The influence of plasma channel length on an angular terahertz (THz) radiation distribution is experimentally studied for the channel formed under filamentation of an ultrashort laser pulse. It is shown that the angular distribution of the THz emission depends only on laser intensity in the filament and plasma density of the plasma channel and does not depend on the plasma channel length. A qualitative explanation of the THz emission screening by the filament plasma channel is proposed.

Super-broadband mid-IR laser systems are under development in the Gas Lasers Lab of the Lebedev Physical Institute. These systems consist of different sorts of molecular gas lasers and various nonlinear crystals converting multi-line emission of those lasers into broadband radiation on sum and difference frequencies. As frequency converters, both main mid-IR nonlinear crystals such as ZnGeP2, GaSe, AgGaSe2 and new ones such as BaGa2GeSe6, PbIn6Te10 are applied. As radiation sources, repetitively-pulsed Q-switched lasers pumped by both longitudinal DC discharge and transverse slab RF discharge emitting microsecond pulses, and also actively mode-locked e-beam sustained discharge lasers emitting nanosecond pulses are applied. It was experimentally demonstrated for the developed laser systems to emit broadband radiation on hundreds spectral lines covering mid-IR range from ~1.7 to ~17 micron due to sum and difference frequency generation including third harmonic generation.

At first glance, the amount of water molecules naturally contained in humid air is negligibly small to affect filamentation of ultrashort laser pulses. However, here we show, both experimentally and numerically, that for ultraviolet laser pulses with 248 nm wavelength this is not true. We demonstrate that with increase of air humidity the plasma channels generated by the ultraviolet laser pulses in air become longer and wider, while the corresponding electron density in humid air can be up to one order of magnitude higher compared to dry air.

We have measured the absolute energy of the third harmonic generated by multiple filaments in the focusing geometry of a 744-nm femtosecond pulse in air. The subdivision of the initial 744-nm beam into several beamlets and their fusion in the vicinity of the geometrical focus breaks up the symmetry of the fluence distribution before and after the focus and suppresses the Gouy shift. As a result, the third harmonic yield as the function of 744-nm pump pulse energy undergoes branching. An order of magnitude higher branch corresponds to 248-nm pulse energy obtained after four, three, or two colliding beamlets. The lower branch corresponds to 248-nm pulse energy for a single beamlet of the same initial energy as the energy of several ones added together. The two branches of the third harmonic yield converge back as the peak power after a single opening reaches the critical power for self-focusing in air.

Transient stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) of 0.3 ps 515 nm laser pulses in B a W O 4 crystal was experimentally demonstrated with efficiency up to ∼ 20 % for the Stokes component with a wavenumber of ∼ 925 c m − 1 in a simple single-pass geometry. This anomalous high efficiency was obtained due to the laser pulse self-phase modulation resulting in spectral broadening and seeding the SRS. The applicability of seed pulse production for a high-pressure sub-picosecond C O 2 laser amplifier via difference frequency generation in L i G a S 2 crystal was numerically verified.

Q-switched repetitively pulsed cryogenic slab RF discharge CO laser output characteristics (its spectrum, peak power and pulse duration) were studied for various active medium compositions and pump pulse energies. It was found that small addition of N2 increased output peak power at the same other parameters. The highest peak power of this CO laser facility ~ 4 kW was obtained for gas mixture CO:O2:N2:He with O2:N2 concentration ratio 1:4 as about in the atmospheric air. It was shown that the atmospheric air as the active gas mixture component can be applied instead of pure nitrogen and oxygen without the laser peak power loss.

The interaction of four beams propagating in filamentation regime is studied in IR (744 nm) and UV (248 nm) spectral domains both experimentally and numerically. UV filaments was shown not to fuse and form a superfilament unlike IR ones.

A number of methods has been developed to control multiple filamentation of TW-power sub-ps KrF laser pulses envisaged for HV discharge and MW radiation guiding, atmospheric air laser pumping, and filamentation suppression in target irradiation.

We conducted the experiment on third harmonic generation (248 nm) in the case of several IR (744 nm) beams fusion. The third harmonic yield was dramatically higher in comparison with the single beam case. In case of nonlinear beams interaction the efficiency increased additionally.

The study of the time-resolved optical reflection from the silicon surface excited by single femtosecond laser pulses below and near the melting threshold reveals fast (less than 10 ps) Auger recombination of a photogenerated electron–hole plasma with simultaneous energy transfer to the lattice. The acoustic relaxation of the excited surface layer indicates (according to reported data) a characteristic depth of 150 nm of the introduction of the laser radiation energy, which is related to direct linear laser radiation absorption in the photoexcited material due to a decrease in the energy bandgap. The surface temperature, which is probed at a time delay of about 100 ps from the reflection thermomodulation of probe radiation and the integrated continuous thermal emission from the surface, increases with the laser fluence and, thus, favors a nonlinear increase in the fluorescence of sublimated silicon atoms. The surface temperature estimated near the picosecond melting threshold demonstrates a substantial (20%) overheating of the material with respect to the equilibrium melting temperature. Above the melting threshold, the delay of formation of the material melt decreases rapidly (from several tens of picoseconds to several fractions of a picosecond) when the laser fluence and, correspondingly, the surface temperature increase. In the times of acoustic relaxation of the absorbing layer and even later, the time modulation of the optical reflectivity of the material demonstrates acoustic reverberations with an increasing period, which are related to the formation of melt nuclei in the material.

Multiple filamentation of subpicosecond UV pulses with peak power up to 0.2 TW was investigated at the Ti:Sapphire/KrF GARPUN-MTW laser facility in the direct amplification scheme. Filamentation arose in the initial preamplifier stage when peak power exceeded the critical value of 0.1 GW. The filamentation pattern was well reproducible for repetitive pulses in time scales from nanoseconds to several minutes.

It is shown that an experimental decrease in the reflection of a probe femtosecond pulse from an aluminum film heated by a higher-power femtosecond pulse can be quantitatively described taking into account the inhomogeneous distribution of the laser pulse field in the film and the evolution of the electron and lattice temperature during absorption of the heating inhomogeneous field. Analysis of the electron temperature evolution on the heated film surface combined with modern concepts about the influence of a surface volume charge on thermal emission gave the relation between the amount of emitted electrons and experimental data on the heating of the aluminum film by the femtosecond pulse.

Ultrafast intense photoexcitation of a silicon surface is complementarily studied experimentally and theoretically, with its prompt optical dielectric function obtained by means of time-resolved optical reflection microscopy and the underlying electron-hole plasma dynamics modeled numerically, using a quantum kinetic approach. The corresponding transient surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) dispersion curves of the photo-excited material were simulated as a function of the electron-hole plasma density, using the derived optical dielectric function model, and directly mapped at several laser photon energies, measuring spatial periods of the corresponding SPP-mediated surface relief nanogratings. The unusual spectral dynamics of the surface plasmon resonance, initially increasing with the increase in the electron-hole plasma density but damped at high interband absorption losses induced by the high-density electron-hole plasma through instantaneous bandgap renormalization, was envisioned through the multi-color mapping.

We report the results of laboratory experiments and numerical calculations of the spatial position and structure of a plasma channel produced in air by high-power focused femtosecond laser radiation with wavelengths of 740 and 248 nm as a result of its self-focusing and filamentation. A comparative analysis of the physical patterns of filamentation of IR and UV laser beams with variations in the beam focal length, transverse size and power is performed. It is found that a plasma channel beyond the linear focal waist of the laser beam is formed differently for two different spectral ranges.

Emission of erosive plasma has been observed during electric probe and optical emission spectral measurements of plumes produced by single-shot femtosecond laser ablation of optical-quality surfaces of various materials—copper, titanium, and silicon—at laser fluences well below the corresponding thermal ablation thresholds, replacing presumably electron emission at lower fluences. The onset of erosive plasma correlates on the fluence scale with saturation of dependences of self-reflectivity of the pumping femtosecond laser pulses, reflecting the “freezing” of electron dynamics (variation of electron density or temperature) during the pumping pulses, despite the monotonically increasing laser fluences.

The fluorescence of thin oil films on the water surface induced by femtosecond UV laser pulses was studied experimentally. The laser pulses were considered in a wide range of intensities, including the radiation filamentation range. The applicability of the method to femtosecond UV pulses with two central wavelengths (248 and 372 nm) was compared. It was shown that the spatial resolution of the fluorescence localization was no worse than 30 cm.

Results are presented from a series of experimental and theoretical studies on creating weakly ionized extended plasma channels in atmospheric air by 248-nm UV laser radiation and their application to control long high-voltage discharges. The main mechanisms of air ionization by UV laser pulses with durations from 100 fs to 25 ns and intensities in the ranges of 3×1011–1.5×1013 and 3×106–3×1011 W/cm2, respectively, which are below the threshold for optical gas breakdown, as well as the main relaxation processes in plasma with a density of 109–1017 cm−3, are considered. It is shown that plasma channels in air can be efficiently created by amplitude-modulated UV pulses consisting of a train of subpicosecond pulses producing primary photoelectrons and a long UV pulse suppressing electron attachment and sustaining the density of free electrons in plasma. Different modes of the generation and amplification of trains of subterawatt subpicosecond pulses and amplitude-modulated UV pulses with an energy of several tens of joules were implemented on the GARPUN-MTW hybrid Ti:sapphire-KrF laser facility. The filamentation of such UV laser beams during their propagation in air over distances of up to 100 m and the parameters of the corresponding plasma channels were studied experimentally and theoretically. Laser initiation of high-voltage electric discharges and control of their trajectories by means of amplitude-modulated UV pulses, as well as the spatiotemporal structure of breakdowns in air gaps with length of up to 80 cm, were studied.

The critical power of self-focusing in the air for ultrashort UV laser pulses stretched due to dispersion from 90 up to 730 fs was experimentally measured. It was shown that the pulse duration enhancement due to its propagation in condensed media within above mentioned time-range leads to almost linear decrease of self-focusing critical power. We have demonstrated experimentally and numerically the possibility of controlling parameters of plasma channels formed during filamentation of a femtosecond laser pulse by introducing astigmatism in the laser beam wavefront. It is found that weak astigmatism increases the length of the plasma channel in comparison with the case of aberration-free focusing and that strong astigmatism can cause splitting of the plasma channel into two channels located one after another on the filament axis.

Surface topography, phase composition and compressive residual stresses were characterized in surface layers of α + β titanium alloys VT6 (Ti–6Al–4V) and VT16 (Ti–3Al–4.5V–5Mo) nanotextured by 744-nm, 120-fs-laser pulses. The relative content of β-phase, along with the residual compressive stresses, increases significantly in both these materials over the depth ~0.2 μ in the nanotextured surface layer comprised by nanograins and remains almost unchanged at higher depths of 1–2 μ in bulk. The laser-driven α → β phase transformation is related to the combined effect of ultrafast heating/cooling, strong (multi-GPa) shock waves, chemical segregation and nanograin formation induced during the ablative surface nanotexturing.

Thin aluminum film homogeneously heated by intense IR femtosecond laser pulses exhibits on the excitation timescale consequent fluence-dependent rise and drop of the IR-pump self-reflectivity, followed by its final saturation at higher fluences F > 0.3 J/cm2. This prompt optical dynamics correlates with the initial monotonic increase in the accompanying laser-induced electron emission, which is succeeded by its non-linear (three-photon) increase for F > 0.3 J/cm2. The underlying electronic dynamics is related to the initial saturation of IR resonant interband transitions in this material, followed by its strong instantaneous electronic heating via intraband transitions during the pump pulse resulting in thermionic emission. Above the threshold fluence of 0.3 J/cm2, the surface electronic heating is balanced during the pump pulse by simultaneous cooling via intense plasma removal (prompt ablation). The relationship between the deposited volume energy density in the film and its prompt electronic temperature derived from the self-reflection measurements using a Drude model, demonstrates a kind of electron “liquid–vapor” phase transition, driven by strong cubic optical non-linearity of the photo-excited aluminum.
