Italy and Germany maintain different intersectoral innovation flows and national technological systems. The Italian technological system features a dualistic structure where few high-tech sectors co-exist along with a pool of traditional ones. The German system, on the other hand, is characterized by a more evenly distributed structure of intersectoral innovation flows. The design of both Italian and German technological systems is influenced by the foreign market.

26. Detection of Inflammatory Biomarker suPAR in COVID-19 Disease With CHORUS TRIO Instrument

Abstract

Background: Deregulation in the urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPA/uPAR) system is reported in many diseases where the immune system is activated. During SARS-CoV-2 infection, a rise in soluble uPAR (suPAR) levels has been detected and its concentration above 6 µg/L predicts worsening to severe respiratory failure 14 days earlier, with a positive predictive value of 85.9%, and was the prerequisite for a treatment with anakinra, a recombinant IL-1 receptor antagonist that blocks the activity of both IL-1α and IL-1β. Objectives: To compare suPAR concentrations measured by CHORUS suPAR on CHORUS TRIO instrument of DIESSE with the commercially available suPARnostic (ViroGates) ELISA assay. Design: A single-centre, non-pharmacological, diagnostic study was performed. Results: A total of 522 serum samples from patients with COVID-19 were tested for suPAR. CHORUS suPAR resulted accurate and reliable, with a high grade of specificity (97.9%), accuracy (97.3%) and sensitivity (96.9%). The median concentration of suPAR, as determined with CHORUS suPAR, was 6.8 µg/L (interquartile range 4.5-9.7) in patients with moderate disease (n = 465) and 8.5 µg/L (interquartile range 5.4-10.6) in patients with severe disease. Among patients with moderate and severe disease, 60.6% and 71.9%, respectively, reached the cut-off concentration of suPAR ⩾6 µg/L, defining their illness severity and suggesting eligibility to anakinra treatment. Conclusion: CHORUS suPAR kit resulted as sensitive, specific, accurate and able to quantify suPAR concentrations in patients with moderate and severe COVID-19.

27. Traumatic myiasis in farmed animals caused by Wohlfahrtia magnifica in southern Italy (Diptera: Sarcophagidae)

Abstract

Ten herds of sheep and goats (455 heads) were inspected for the presence of traumatic myiasis between May and September 2013 in the province of Cosenza, Calabria, southern Italy. Nine cases were discovered in sheep, goats and a sheepdog. Infested body sites included external genitalia, wounds (sheep and sheepdog) and hooves (goats). Larvae were removed from the infested body areas and reared to adult stage in the laboratory. Both the larvae and the adults were identified as belonging to the Mediterranean screwworm fly Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner, 1862) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), an obligatory parasite of humans and warm-blooded vertebrates. To our knowledge, these are the first cases of wohlfahrtiosis in sheep and goats to be reported from Calabria. The infested animals were living outdoors in spring and summer, and enclosed in sheds during the autumn and winter months. Observed effects of the myiases included severely impeded walking and tissue damage. Wohlfahrtiosis can cause significant economic loss to farmers. Data about the local distribution, seasonality and types of infestation caused by W. magnifica are useful to farmers and vets to improve control systems, in Calabria as elsewhere within the distributional range of the species.

33. Spatial knowledge spillovers and regional productivity growth in Europe

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects that technological knowledge spillovers at different spatial levels (that is, local, national, and international), have had on labor productivity dynamics in the manufacturing industries in European regions between 1980 and 1992. In particular, adopting a modified version of a 'catching-up' equation and using an enlarged version of Eurostat's REGIO database, we empirically assess whether these spatial dimensions are possible explanatory factors for the labor productivity growth of firms located in European regions. We examine eventual trade-offs between local (regarding the transfer of 'tacit' knowledge) and global (regarding the diffusion of fully 'codified' knowledge) pressures as possible determinants of the growth in manufacturing productivity at regional level in Europe between 1980 and 1992.

Abstract

A large number of studies has been canvassed by the growing rates of diffusion of Open Source Software. However, a formal analysis of the process of competition between open-source and proprietary software is still missing. We propose an epidemic model of innovation diffusion to deal with the different factors (profits for proprietary software and developers’ motivations for open–source software) upon which such a process of competition ultimately depends Moreover, we add network effects and switching costs, together with the endogenisation of the parameters of the speed of diffusion influencing the final outcome. We show the conditions for an asymptotically stable equilibrium to exist, where both softwares coexist. When the propagation coefficient is endogenous, winner–take–all solutions are also likely. Furthermore, an increase in the level of the switching costs for one software increases the number of its adopters, while reducing that of the other one. If the negative network effects increase for one of the two softwares, then the equilibrium level of users of that software decreases

Abstract

The systemic nature of technological change is now a well established result of much literature, of both theoretical (e.g. Carlsson & Stankiewicz, 1991; Lundvall, 1992; De Liso & Metcalfe, 1996; Edquist, 1997) and empirical (e.g. Nelson, 1993; Patel & Pavitt, 1994; Saxenian, 1994; Carlsson, 1995) nature. As the innovative process does not follow a ‘linear’, isolated path, but occurs within specific institutional contexts of interactive relationships between different organisations, concepts such as those of innovative and technological systems appear to be the most appropriate units of analysis. However, several specifications have been provided, by referring to both functional and geographical boundaries, which are differently characterised and thus determine differences in the level of analysis and in methodologies. As far as this paper is concerned, we will adopt a broad and structured notion of technological system that we deem particularly suitable to retain relationships that are not only innovative as such, but also techno-economic—i.e. related not only to the functioning of the innovative and of the production sub–systems, but also of the market (both domestic and foreign) and the institutional infrastructure. footnote Furthermore, our definition refers to national technological systems, because we claim that, even in a world of increasing globalisation and localisms, national boundaries still matter: for example, interesting idiosyncrasies and clusters emerge by looking at the ‘configurations’ that technological systems assume in different countries (Leoncini & Montresor, 1998). This paper aims at measuring and comparing some of the key relationships within a technological system by considering its intersectoral techno–economic linkages. footnote We thus intend to highlight the role of innovative flows of different magnitude within it, the location of its ‘cores’ and ‘terminals’, the inward or outward configuration of its partitions, from both a ‘cross–sectional’ and a ‘time series’ comparative perspective. The application refers to eight OECD countries along three temporal spans (see Appendix A1 for full details). It consists of a network analysis of the intersectoral innovation flows matrices we have obtained by disaggregating each technological system into 15 manufacturing sectors (Appendix A2). The paper is organised as follows. In Section 2 the methodological issues about innovation flows matrices and network analysis are briefly reviewed. Section 3 describes the empirical results. Section 4 contains the main conclusions.
