RESUMO Este estudo buscou evidências iniciais de validade de estrutura interna e de relação com variáveis externas da Escala de Agilidade frente às Mudanças Organizacionais em amostras brasileiras. Participaram do estudo 494 trabalhadores (53% do sexo feminino), de 22 a 74 anos (M=45,5; DP=9,2). A análise fatorial exploratória sugeriu a retenção de um único fator, com cinco itens e cargas fatoriais entre 0,53 e 0,80. A análise fatorial confirmatória também apresentou índices satisfatórios de ajuste. A escala apresentou correlação positiva alta com a aceitação à mudança e com a abertura à experiência, e correlação negativa fraca, com o ceticismo frente à mudança. Revelou-se, portanto, uma medida apropriada à avaliação da agilidade individual frente à mudança, com a recomendação do seu uso futuro em pesquisas e diagnósticos organizacionais, sendo o construto mais bem interpretado com outras variáveis do contexto de trabalho e pessoais.

IntroductionOverusing and misusing pesticides, including paraquat (PQ), have led to numerous environmental contamination complications. PQ is an emerging bio-accumulative contaminant that is present in environmental aqueous matrices. Adsorption techniques are part of a set of technologies applied in ecological remediation, known for their high effectiveness in removing aqueous PQ. A study of the PQ adsorption capacity of three cyclodextrin–silica nanocomposites (α-CDSi, β-CDSi, and γ-CDSi) from contaminated waters is presented in this paper.MethodsThe cyclodextrin–silica nanocomposites were synthesized via an esterification reaction between the inorganic matrix and cyclodextrins (CDs) (α, β, and γ) and were characterized physicochemically by spectroscopic, thermal, and surface methods. Their PQ removal performance from contaminated aqueous media was studied under different experimental conditions.Results and DiscussionThe results showed a fast adsorptive response in removal treatment studies over time. Adsorption capacities of 87.22, 57.17, and 77.27 mg.g−1 were found for α-CDSi, β-CDSi, and γ-CDSi, respectively, at only 30 min of treatment. Thermodynamic studies indicated spontaneous and exothermic adsorption processes. The removal assays responded mainly to physisorption mechanisms with contributions from chemisorption mechanisms. Spectroscopic assays showed a strong interaction of PQ with the adsorbents used. Innovative CDSi nanocomposites have proven to be highly efficient in applying aqueous PQ remediation, thus proving to be sustainable adsorbents of contaminants of emerging importance worldwide.

Abstract The objective of this work was to determine the fruit yield and water productivity of the 'Prata Anã' banana plant, under different combinations of planting densities and irrigation depths in its fourth production cycle. The experiment was designed in randomized complete blocks in a split-plot arrangement with four replicates, with the following factors: two levels of irrigation depth (50 and 100% crop evapotranspiration) in the plots and four levels of planting density (1,666, 2,083, 2,666, and 3,333 plants per hectare) in the subplots. Crop evapotranspiration and yield characteristics were evaluated. Reductions in the mass of hands, number of hands, and number of fruits were observed as planting density increased, as well as increments in the yield of hands and in water productivity and a reduction in water footprint. It is possible to increase the yield of the banana plant by increasing its planting density and reducing the irrigation depth applied in its fourth production cycle.

RESUMO Objetivou-se no pressente estudo a construção da Escala de Estigma de Cortesia entre Familiares de Usuários de Drogas (ECOFAD) e a busca por evidências de validade de conteúdo e de estrutura interna. A partir da revisão de literatura sobre Estigma de Cortesia nas bases de dados PsycNET (APA), Pubmed, Bvs Brasil, Periódicos CAPES, SciELO, e Pepsic, foram identificados seis instrumentos que mensuram esse fenômeno e que serviram para a proposição de uma escala com três dimensões (cognitiva, afetiva e comportamental). Uma comissão de sete juízes especialistas avaliou o instrumento e os coeficientes de validade de conteúdo para a escrita, clareza e pertinência dos itens foram de: 0,78, 0,82 e 0,87, respectivamente. Na amostra online (n =86), o índice de confiabilidade das subescalas variou com alfa de Cronbach de 0,81 a 0,89. A análise fatorial exploratória indicou três fatores como os mais representativos do conjunto de variáveis observadas.

Abstract Psychological flexibility is considered a relevant resource for dealing with change processes. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a psychological flexibility intervention on well-being at work, with groups of workers in contexts of organizational change. Initially, a pilot study (n=16) was performed to fine-tune the protocol. Then, the intervention was conducted with a different group (n=10), with three face-to-face sessions and an external observer. We applied the Affective Organizational Commitment Scale and the Work Engagement Scale, considered components of well-being. To analyze the effectiveness of the intervention, we used the Jacobson and Truax Method, which compares the participants’ scores before and after the intervention. The results showed that the intervention increased the perception of well-being at work. The study highlights promising psychological flexibility interventions in environments of organizational change, especially for increasing the involvement and commitment of workers.

ABSTRACT Boron (B) is readily leached from the soil, depending on the soil texture, soil organic matter (OM) content, and the fertilizer source used. This can restrict B uptake by plants. Therefore, we investigated the most adequate B source for soybeans grown in soils with contrasting textures and OM contents. The plants were cultivated for 55 days in columns filled with clayey or sandy Oxisols with low or high OM contents. The clay contents (%) in the soils were as follows: clayey soil with low OM = 64; clayey soil with high OM = 67; sandy soil with low OM = 4; and sandy soil with high OM = 15. The B sources tested comprised the control (no B supply), ulexite, zinc borate, boric acid, and B-monoethanolamine (B-MEA), with the equivalent of 6 kg B ha–1 applied. Boron leaching from ulexite was lower than other B fertilizers in the sandy soil with high OM content. Boron leaching was higher in sandy than in clayey soils. Boron accumulation in shoots was lower when boric acid was applied to the sandy soil with low OM content than the other B fertilizers. In this same soil, the agronomic efficiency and recovery of B applied by plants supplied with ulexite and zinc borate were higher compared to boric acid and B-MEA. In conclusion, the use of ulexite and zinc borate is more appropriate for soybean fertilization in sandy soils with low OM content, while B-MEA is more suitable for sandy soils with high OM content.

To address the escalating global demand for food production, it is imperative to minimize agricultural losses caused by pests, accounting for up to 40 % of the substantial worldwide losses of 70 billion USD. While conventional pesticides raise environmental concerns, environmentally friendly alternatives like curcumin and carvacrol face low biological activity due to their low solubility and premature degradation in environmental conditions, that is, degradation can occur due to solar radiation, high temperature, etc., before the active ingredients can exert its full potential. This study introduces zein-based nanocarriers encapsulating curcumin and carvacrol, exhibiting favorable characteristics. Cytotoxicity tests indicate approximately 60% viability for fibroblast cell lines compared to 20% for keratinocyte cell lines. The nanoencapsulated compounds exhibit promising biological activity against soybean pests, mites, and caterpillars, without causing phytotoxicity. Tetranychus urticae mortality rates reach 77.1 ± 11.5 %, and nanoencapsulated ingredients demonstrate higher repellency (61.1 ± 8.8%) than emulsified ones (51.1 ± 5.4 %). Nanoencapsulated ingredients exhibit significantly higher mortality rates for Spodoptera cosmioides and Spodoptera eridania, underscoring the potential of nanoencapsulation in bolstering bioactivity against specific pests and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Acanthamoeba castellanii is a free-living amoeba capable of causing keratitis in humans, with most cases related to contact lens wearers and surgical procedures. In addition, A. castellanii may cause pneumonia, granulomatous encephalitis, and skin lesions in immunocompromised individuals. Considering the lack of adequate treatment for acanthamoebiasis, the aim of this review is to assess relevant original articles that covered the current arsenal of drugs and models of organisms used in the field of experimental A. castellanii infection that have been published within the last 5 years (2018–2023) in journals indexed by the following databases: Electronic Library Online (SciELO), PubMed, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (Medline), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (Lilacs), Google Academic, and Capes Periodical Portal. Thirty articles were selected, and the main findings showed that the available therapeutics for acanthamoebiasis are still limited and nonspecific, and no innovations have occurred in the last few years. In terms of novel chemotherapeutic advances, the last findings have focused on the activity of natural products (plant-based extracts), nanoemulsions, coated particles, and photodynamic association against A. castellanii, without advancing from the bench to bedside perspective. The choice of a non-representative model system for acanthamoebiasis, as well as the limitations of studies in vivo, impairs the advancement of toxicity analyses. Efforts should be made to expand the model systems used, standardize tests for evaluating anti-A. castellanii drug candidates, and increase and support research groups focusing on the biology of A. castellanii and the pharmacology of acanthamoebiasis.

Molecular genetic assessments are modern selection tools that provide accurate information to producers seeking to improve the health, well-being, and profitability of their herd. The aim of the present study was to elaborate the genomic profile of Holstein cows from the semiarid region of Pernambuco through the Genomic Predicted Transmission Ability values, to correlate milk production characteristics with conformation and reproduction characteristics, and to evaluate information on carriers for genetic diseases. Thirty-nine Holstein cows were used to obtain the Genomic Predicted Transmission Ability-GPTA, a 12k chip (12 thousand genetic markers – CLARIFIDE®) by Zoetis. The averages of GPTA in this study were higher than those of American average, namely 384 pounds of milk production, 17.9 pounds of fat, and 12.9 pounds of protein. For CCS, females showed moderate susceptibility to mastitis. The volume and fat content were considered the most indicated selection criteria to improve the gains in quantity and concentration of solids in milk. Carriers for VMC and CHD were identified. It appeared that the Holstein herd from the semiarid region presented a genetic profile with the potential to improve the productive characteristics, allowing the identification of animals with genetic anomalies before entering the reproductive phase

Resumo Diante da plataformização de tantas formas de interação social, a antropologia digital tem lidado com novos desafios ético-metodológicos. Neste artigo, exploramos como o aprendizado e o uso de métodos mistos (quanti-quali) podem contribuir para o fazer antropológico no estudo de sistemas complexos como as plataformas digitais. Trazemos neste artigo um estudo de caso no qual demonstramos como pudemos observar as mensagens mais compartilhadas entre os usuários de mais de 200 grupos de extrema direita presentes no Telegram no dia 8 de janeiro de 2023. Baseados na experiência de testes e aplicações de novas metodologias multidisciplinares que relacionam as ciências da tecnologia da informação e a antropologia social, buscamos realizar análises amostrais do evento político ocorrido em Brasília. Assim, refletimos sobre as implicações éticas desses novos métodos e concluímos reforçando a importância do aprimoramento e a necessidade de revisões éticas que permitam o uso de métodos mistos no fazer da antropologia digital.

Water deficiency has been recognized as a major abiotic stress that causes losses in maize crops around the world. The maize crop is very important due to the range of products that are derived from this plant. A potential way to reduce the damages caused by water deficiency in maize crops is through the association with plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). To define the mechanisms developed by associative PGPB and AMF in maize that are involved in protection against moderate drought (MD), this study evaluated the biometrical, anatomical, biochemical, and physiological parameters of maize grown under MD and inoculated with different PGPB (Azospirillum brasilense strain Ab-V5 and Bacillus sp. strain ZK) and with AMF. The relative water content did not change in the treatments. The association with ZK increased the shoot:total ratio, total dry weight, maximum quantum yield of photosystem II, vascular cylinder thickness, and vascular cylinder area. The Ab-V5 inoculation led to an increment in root dry weight, the area of metaxylem vessel elements, and nitrate reductase activity. The AMF association did not lead to changes in the measured parameters. The results indicate that the association with PGPB is a relevant alternative to contribute to reducing losses in maize crops under drought. However, AMF is not indicated for this crop under drought.

Este estudo objetivou identificar possíveis efeitos das atitudes em relação à aposentadoria e intenção de empreender. Participaram da pesquisa 162 servidores públicos do judiciário trabalhista, que responderem a um questionário on-line autoaplicável com escalas sobre intenção de empreender, perdas e ganhos na aposentadoria e potencial empreendedor. Um modelo de regressão múltipla hierárquica stepwise foi proposto para seleção do modelo inicial. Testes de mediação foram utilizados para testar as seguintes hipóteses: H1 - os ganhos percebidos frente a um novo começo na aposentadoria exerceriam influência positiva na intenção empreendedora; H2 - as perdas percebidas quanto aos aspectos tangíveis do trabalho exerceriam influência positiva na intenção empreendedora; H3 - Maiores níveis de oportunidade para empreender predizem maiores níveis de intenção empreendedora; e H4 - a oportunidade para empreender funcionaria como variável mediadora entre os ganhos percebidos de um novo começo e as perdas percebidas dos aspectos tangíveis do trabalho em relação ao desfecho da intenção empreendedora. Os resultados estatísticos foram satisfatórios para a amostra, corroborando as quatro hipóteses mencionadas. As atitudes positivas ou negativas sobre a aposentadoria possuem efeito sobre a intenção de empreender, sendo a oportunidade para empreender um mecanismo importante para este efeito.

We aimed to quantify the N losses through volatilization of the main conventional and stabilized N fertilizers applied in coffee plantations. Additionally, we also assessed microbiological attributes of the soil (microbial biomass carbon (MBC); microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN); microbial basal respiration (MBR); metabolic quotient (qCO2); urease, β-glucosidase, acid phosphatase, and arylsulfatase activities) and agronomic aspects of the crop (N content in the leaves and beans, yield, and N exportation by the beans). Treatments consisted of the combination of three fertilizers (ammonium nitrate - AN, conventional urea - U, and urea with N- (n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) - UNBPT, and five doses of N (0, 150, 275, 400, and 525 kg ha-1 year-1 of N), with four replicates, totalling 60 experimental plots. In the two crop seasons evaluated, daily and cumulative losses of N-NH3 from the split fertilizer applications were influenced by the N fertilizer technologies. The application of U resulted in losses of 22.0% and 22.8% for the doses of 150 and 400 kg ha-1 year-1 of N. This means that 66 and 182 kg ha-1 of N-NH3 were lost, respectively, at the end of six fertilizations with U. UNBPT reduced urease activity and N-NH3 losses compared to conventional urea, avoiding the volatilization of 15.9 and 24.3 kg ha-1 of N. As for AN, N-NH3 losses did not exceed 1% of the applied dose, regardless of the weather conditions during the fertilization. Urease activity was higher on days of maximum NH3 volatilization. There was an effect of the N sources (NS), soil sampling time (ST), and their interaction (NS × ST) on the MBN and arylsulfatase activity. The N sources also influenced the MBC and the qCO2. A substantial amount of N was removed from the system by the beans and husks of the harvested fruits. Our study showed that N fertilizer technologies are interesting options to reduce N-NH3 losses by volatilization, increase N retention in the soil, and improve microbiological attributes and the sustainability of coffee production systems.

The paper consolidates the role of conventional and stabilized N fertilizers used in coffee crop production in Brazil and their N2O emissions in tropical systems. The experiment consisted of the combination of three fertilizers and five doses with four repetitions, totalling 60 experimental plots. The factors of the experiment were conventional urea (U), ammonium nitrate (AN), and urea + NBPT (UNBPT), while the doses were 0, 150, 275, 400, and 525 kg ha−1 year−1 of N. The municipality is located in a region at 1100 m of altitude, 20°53′26.04″ S and 44°52′04.14″ W. A randomized block design with a 3 × 5 factorial scheme was used. This region, traditional in coffee production, has a tropical humid climate, classified as Cwa according to the Köppen scale, with temperate summer and dry winter. UNBPT and the ammonium nitrate mitigated the N2O emissions by 50.6% and 78.5%, respectively, in comparison to the conventional urea. High C stocks were found in the 1 m soil layer, from 117 to 162 t ha−1 of organic C, indicating the importance of the soil as a C sink in coffee plantations. N stocks varied from 33 to 17 t ha−1 of N but no differences among the treatments were found. Approximately 50% of soil C was in the 0–0.4 m layer as a consequence of the greater amount of plant biomass, nutrients, and biological activity. Soil C:N ratio in the entire layer varied from 4.2 to 9.2. Our results indicate that nitrification is the most predominant process of N2O emissions. The standard EF proposed by the IPCC overestimates the N2O emissions in the Brazilian coffee plantations and the emissions differ according to the N fertilizer technology. These coffee crop systems have an important ability to stock C and N in the soil.

Lidocaine is the most commonly used local anesthetic worldwide, known for its rapid onset and moderate duration of anesthesia. However, it is short-lived and does not effectively promote effective topical anesthesia in the oral cavity when used alone. Our aim was to investigate whether an approximate 50% encapsulation of lidocaine in poly(ε-caprolactone) nanocapsules (LDC-Nano) would be able to increase its permeation and analgesic efficacy and reduce cytotoxicity. In this study, we characterized LDC-Nano and conducted MTT tests with HaCaT cells to assess their in vitro cytotoxicity. Additionally, in vitro permeation assays across the pig esophageal epithelium and the anesthetic efficacy of the hind paw incision model in rats were performed. Plain lidocaine (LDC) was compared with LDC-Nano and lidocaine hydrochloride plus epinephrine (LDC-Epi). The physicochemical characteristics of LDC-Nano were satisfactory (pH: 8.1 ± 0.21; polydispersity index: 0.08 ± 0.01; mean diameter (nm): 557.8 ± 22.7; and encapsulation efficiency (%): 51.8 ± 1.87) and remained stable for up to 4 months. LDC-Nano presented similar in vitro cytotoxicity to LDC but was higher than LDC-Epi (LD50: LDC = 0.48%; LDC-Nano = 0.47%; and LDC-Epi = 0.58%; p < 0.0001). Encapsulation increased the permeability coefficient about 6.6 times and about 7.5 the steady-state flux of lidocaine across the mucosal epithelium. Both encapsulation and epinephrine improved anesthesia duration, with epinephrine demonstrating superior efficacy (100% of animals were anesthetized up to 100, 30, and 20 min when LDC-Epi, LDC-nano, and LDC were used, respectively). Although LDC-Epi demonstrated superior in vivo anesthetic efficacy, the in vitro permeation and cytotoxicity of LDC-Nano indicate promising avenues for future research, particularly in exploring its potential application as a topical anesthetic in the oral cavity.

Abstract Dengue, yellow fever, Chinkungunya, Zika virus, and West Nile fever have infected millions and killed a considerable number of humans since their emergence. These arboviruses are transmitted by mosquito bites and topical chemical repellents are the most commonly used method to protect against vector arthropod species. This study aimed to develop a new generation of repellent formulations to promote improved arboviruses transmission control. A repellent system based on polycaprolactone (PCL)-polymeric nanoparticles was developed for the dual encapsulation of IR3535 and geraniol and further incorporation into a thermosensitive hydrogel. The physicochemical and morphological parameters of the prepared formulations were evaluated by dynamic light scattering (DLS), nano tracking analysis (NTA), atomic force microscopy (AFM). In vitro release mechanisms and permeation performance were evaluated before and after nanoparticles incorporation into the hydrogels. FTIR analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of formulation epidermal contact. Potential cytotoxicity was evaluated using the MTT reduction test and disc diffusion methods. The nanoparticle formulations were stable over 120 days with encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 60% and 99% for IR3535 and geraniol, respectively. AFM analysis revealed a spherical nanoparticle morphology. After 24 h, 7 ± 0.1% and 83 ± 2% of the GRL and IR3535, respectively, were released while the same formulation incorporated in poloxamer 407 hydrogel released 11 ± 0.9% and 29 ± 3% of the loaded GRL and IR3535, respectively. GRL permeation from PCL nanoparticles and PCL nanoparticles in the hydrogel showed similar profiles, while IR3535 permeation was modulated by formulation compositions. Differences in IR3535 permeated amounts were higher for PCL nanoparticles in the hydrogels (36.9 ± 1.1 mg/cm2) compared to the IR3535-PCL nanoparticles (29.2 ± 1.5 mg/cm2). However, both active permeation concentrations were low at 24 h, indicating that the formulations (PCL nanoparticles and PCL in hydrogel) controlled the bioactive percutaneous absorption. Minor changes in the stratum corneum (SC) caused by interaction with the formulations may not represent a consumer safety risk. The cytotoxicity results presented herein indicate the carrier systems based on poly-epsilon caprolactone (PCL) exhibited a reduced toxic effect when compared to emulsions, opening perspectives for these systems to be used as a tool to prolong protection times with lower active repellent concentrations.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Stroke is a major cause of mortality worldwide. Renal dysfunction is an important risk factor for stroke. Brazilian studies on stroke knowledge are generally population based. Studies stratifying stroke knowledge according to comorbidities are rare. Scientific data are essential to guide the awareness of stroke. OBJECTIVE: To assess stroke knowledge in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional analytical study of patients with CKD on hemodialysis in north-eastern Brazil. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire survey on stroke awareness was administered to patients with CKD on hemodialysis between April and November 2022. The chi-square test and other descriptive statistics were used. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 197 patients were included in the analysis. The Brazilian acronym for stroke was used by 53.5% of the participants. Less than 10.0% of the sample showed optimal decision-making ability regarding stroke. Of the participants, 29.9% knew at least one risk factor and one symptom; however, this was considered as having below the minimum capacity because they did not know the emergency service call number. In the analysis adjusted for income and education, females (odds ratio [OR], 0.40%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.20-0.82), older patients (OR, 0.24%; 95% CI, 0.09-0.63) and having at most one comorbidity (OR, 0.48%; 95% CI, 0.23-0.98) were factors for lower levels of knowledge or ideal decision-making capacity against stroke. CONCLUSIONS: Patients on hemodialysis, especially women and older people, have little knowledge about stroke.

A literatura científica aponta consistentemente que grupos historicamente alvos de estigma social experimentam efeitos deletérios, em diversas esferas da vida. A despeito da sua gravidade e pervasividade, ainda existem lacunas na investigação do tema, tais como aquela voltada para o Estigma de Cortesia, que é vivenciado por pessoas que possuem vínculos afetivos ou profissionais com o indivíduo estigmatizado. O presente artigo teve como objetivo apresentar o estado da arte sobre estigma de cortesia, por meio de uma revisão sistemática de estudos empíricos originais publicados em periódicos revisados por pares e indexados nas principais bases relacionadas ao campo de investigação (PsycNET (APA), Pubmed, Bvs Brasil, Periódicos CAPES, SciELO e Pepsic). Como palavras-chave, para a busca dos resumos, utilizou-se: estigma de cortesia, estigma de afiliação e estigma de associação. Ao todo, 94 textos completos atenderam aos critérios de inclusão e exclusão. Os estudos apontaram que o estigma de cortesia tem sido investigado predominantemente entre familiares de pessoas que possuem algum tipo de problema relacionado com sua saúde mental, além de pais de crianças com algum tipo de deficiência.

Abstract Background Biogenic metallic nanoparticles have been emerging as a promising alternative for the control of phytopathogens and as nanofertilizers. In this way, it is essential to investigate the possible impacts of these new nanomaterials on plants. In this study, the effects of soil contamination with biogenic silver (AgNPs) and iron (FeNPs) with known antifungal potential were investigated on morphological, physiological and biochemical parameters of soybean seedlings. Results The exposure of plants/seedlings to AgNPs induced the reduction of root dry weight followed by oxidative stress in this organ, however, adaptive responses such as a decrease in stomatal conductance without impacts on photosynthesis and an increase in intrinsic water use efficiency were also observed. The seedlings exposed to FeNPs had shown an increase in the levels of oxygen peroxide in the leaves not accompanied by lipid peroxidation, and an increase in the expression of POD2 and POD7 genes, indicating a defense mechanism by root lignification. Conclusion Our results demonstrated that different metal biogenic nanoparticles cause different effects on soybean seedlings and these findings highlight the importance of investigating possible phytotoxic effects of these nanomaterials for the control of phytopathogens or as nanofertilizers.

INTRODUCTION: Mentoring through scientific initiation and post-graduate programs are an essential instrument on the formation of human resources and the perpetuation of national scientific production. The role of research professors in the proper scientific development of graduate and post-graduate medical students has been continuously reaffirmed in several surveys on the quality of Brazilian superior education, despite the continuous desvalorization of higher education in the country. Determine the career and profile of research productivity fellows could measure the impact of these professionals in teaching, researching and internationalization of our university. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the professional profile and scientific production of the Productivity in Research Program fellows from the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Minas Gerais. METHODS: This descriptive study is based on the analysis of public data available at Lattes Platform. Research productivity fellows were determined based on the results of the 2013, 2016 and 2019 calls for tenders. RESULTS: Analysis of the variables showed a decrease in the number of professors with scholarships at the institution, which went from 34 to 29. We observed a significantly higher number of funded projects of male professionals when compared to female researchers (p=0.03) and a strong correlation between years of doctorate degree and the number of mentored doctors currently dedicating to research. CONCLUSION: Experient research professors exert direct impact on the formation of qualified human resources and the internationalization of the federal university.

Abstract This study examined the relationship between person-organization fit and turnover intentions, along with the moderating effect of organizational trust. The sample consisted of 381 workers of both genders (61% female) and average age of 39.23, who answered the on-line versions of organizational values, organizational trust and turnover intention measures. The results showed that the higher the person-organization fit related to conservatism and harmony values, the lower the turnover intention. Trust in the organization’s ethical standards moderated the relationship between person-organization fit related to dominance and autonomy values and turnover intention. It was concluded that a reduced trust in the organization’s ethical standards contributes to accentuate the negative relation between person-organization fit associated with such values and turnover intention.

Abstract Background Weight stigma is a phenomenon associated with adverse behavioural and psychological consequences. Although experts suggest that its increase during the COVID-19 pandemic may be associated with worse health outcomes for people with obesity, a thorough analysis of the main findings and gaps is still needed when relating to this subject. Objective We aim to answer three questions: (1) How does weight stigma manifest in the COVID-19 pandemic? (2) How can weight stigma affect people with overweight or obesity in times of COVID-19? (3) What are the perceptions and experiences of weight stigma during the pandemic in individuals who experience overweight or obesity? Methods We conducted a scoping review of studies addressing weight stigma and the COVID-19 pandemic in electronic databases (Medline/PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycInfo, BVS/Lilacs, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and OpenGrey) published until 10th August 2021. All relevant studies were reviewed in full by two researchers. In addition, a narrative synthesis of the data was performed. Results The results included 35 studies out of 8,090 records and identified 13 original research publications, 14 text and opinion papers, and 6 narrative reviews. The results revealed the presence of weight stigma in the media, healthcare settings, interpersonal relationships, and public campaigns during the COVID-19 pandemic. The evidence of increasing weight stigma in the COVID-19 outbreak is limited, though. Many weight discrimination consequences were described during this time, such as impairment in accessing healthcare, worst COVID-19 outcomes, and maladaptive eating. However, only maladaptive behaviours and decline in mental health outcomes were demonstrated empirically in all age groups. This effect occurred regardless of body mass index, but people with high body weight were more likely to experience weight stigma. For some people with obesity, weight stigma in the pandemic has made activities of daily routine difficult. Conclusions The results suggest that weight stigma in the COVID-19 pandemic occurs in several settings; moreover, although weight discrimination impacts mental health, whether before or during the pandemic, this influence between the pandemic and pre-pandemic scenario is still unclear. Therefore, more research is required in this field while the pandemic lasts, especially with people with obesity. Plain English summary Overall, people with overweight or obesity are more vulnerable to weight stigma than individuals without overweight. In addition, weight stigma refers to discrimination or prejudice based on a person’s weight and relates to several consequences, for instance, poor healthcare treatment and mental health problems. In the COVID-19 outbreak, these weight stigma effects tend to become even more critical because they may be associated with unfavourable COVID-19 outcomes and eating disorder risks. Thus, it is crucial to investigate how weight stigma occurs during the pandemic and its impact on health, mainly for the most affected people. We investigated 35 studies published between 2019 and 2021 to map and explore how weight stigma was manifested and the related consequences for people with overweight or obesity in the COVID-19 pandemic. Only about a third of them were quantitative or qualitative, limiting the evidence of weight stigma in the COVID-19 context. The available evidence suggests that weight stigma manifests in several settings such as media, healthcare, public campaigns, and is more common in people with excess weight. However, weight discrimination experiences before or during the pandemic were associated with adverse psychological and behavioural consequences across all age groups, regardless of body weight. For some people with obesity, for instance, weight stigma made it difficult to accomplish their activities of daily routine. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether weight stigma has increased in the pandemic, thus, more studies are required, especially about people with overweight or obesity.

The most important commercial casting alloys are those based on Al–Si. Their technical characteristics are highly connected to their as-cast microstructure, which is translated by the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS). The alloy microstructure has been demonstrated to be changed by the adding of certain alloying elements, in the sense of boosting the desired properties and features. Search has been intensified to provide a positive balance of several properties, such as: high yield strength, high electrical conductivity, and high corrosion resistance, besides maintaining the ability for the alloy to be conventionally solidified. Under such context, both addition of Ag and the control of the fineness of the dendritic structure can be alternatives seeking better properties for Al–Si alloys. In addition to the possibility of application in current studies contributing to the growing development needs as engine materials, Al–Si–Ag alloys can emerge as an alternative to the manufacture of parts for electric vehicles, such as rotors and inverters, where high mechanical strength, corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity are required. Corrosion findings of Al–Si–Ag specimens having quite different SDAS of five alloys are presented here: Al-5wt.% Si, Al-5wt.% Si-0.1wt.% Ag, Al-10wt.% Si-0.1wt.% Ag, Al-5wt.% Si-2wt.% Ag, Al-10wt.%Si-2wt.%Ag alloys. A complete set of characterization with potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, immersion tests, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was developed for these alloys. It has been demonstrated that increase in the alloy Si content diminishes corrosion resistance, and that increase in Ag content, considering Al-10% Si alloys, reduces corrosion resistance as well, despite creating thicker passive films. Furthermore, the alloys with the lowest Ag content (0.1 wt.%) had the greatest corrosion performance among the Ag-containing alloys, while the microstructure refinement tends to enhance the nobility of the samples.

O estudo teve por objetivo investigar elementos e dimensões de resiliência profissional em trabalhadores de uma instituição de reabilitação integrada que atende pessoas com deficiência física, vítimas de acidentes de trânsito durante a pandemia da COVID-19. Os pressupostos teóricos estão pautados na Teoria Bioecológica do Desenvolvimento Humano e no modelo de Resiliência em Famílias de Froma Walsh. Com delineamento qualitativo foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas e análises a partir da Grounded Theory. Os resultados identificaram três eixos de categorias: reinvenção das práticas profissionais; convivência com a dualidade emocional e Experiências inovadoras. As categorias em conjunto demonstraram elementos que evidenciam processos de resiliência profissional pautados na ressignificação e nas transformações de percepções, sentimentos e práticas de trabalhadores em contexto de risco causado pela Pandemia da COVID-19.

Lupus nephritis is one of the most serious and frequent manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus. It usually presents in the first years of the disease, which suspicion should be raised in cases of elevated serum creatinine, presence of proteinuria above 500 mg/day or active urinary sediment, in the absence of other apparent causes such as urinary tract infection and use of nephrotoxic drugs. In most cases, it affects the glomerulus, and its presentation is rare in the form of isolated tubulo-interstitial disease. In this report, we describe a case of lupus nephritis diagnosed after 2 years of illness, in the form of atypical isolated tubular disease, characterized by massive deposits in the tubular basement membrane. Clinically, there were altered renal function, subnephrotic proteinuria, and evolution to a complete clinical response after immunosuppressive treatment.

The aim of this study was to test whether lyophilized conditioned media from human dental pulp mesenchymal stem cell cultures promote the healing of critical-size defects created in the calvaria of rats. Prior to the surgical procedure, the medium in which dental pulp stem cells were cultured was frozen and lyophilized. After general anesthesia, an 8 mm diameter bone defect was created in the calvaria of twenty-four rats. The defects were filled with the following materials: xenograft alone (G1) or xenograft associated with lyophilized conditioned medium (G2). After 14 or 42 days, the animals were euthanized, and the specimens processed for histologic and immunohistochemical analysis. Bone formation at the center of the defect was observed only in the G2 at 42 days. At both timepoints, increased staining for VEGF, a marker for angiogenesis, was observed in G2. Consistent with this, at 14 days, G2 also had a higher number of blood vessels detected by immunostaining with an anti-CD34 antibody. In conclusion, conditioned media from human dental pulp mesenchymal stem cell cultures had a positive effect on the regenerative process in rat critical-size bone defects. Both the formation of bone and enhancement of vascularization were stimulated by the conditioned media.

Herein, a novel completely green biosensor was designed exploiting both the biological and instrumental components made of eco-friendly materials for the detection of herbicides encapsulated into biodegradable nanoparticles for a sustainable agriculture. Similar nanocarriers, indeed, can deliver herbicides to the correct location, reducing the amount of active chemicals deposited in the plant, impacting the agricultural and food industries less. However, handling measurements of nanoherbicides is crucial to provide comprehensive information about their status in the agricultural fields to support farmers in decision-making. In detail, whole cells of the unicellular green photosynthetic alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii UV180 mutant were immobilized by a green protocol on carbonized lignin screen-printed electrodes and integrated into a photo-electrochemical transductor for the detection of nanoformulated atrazine. Specifically, atrazine encapsulated into zein and chitosan doped poly-ε-caprolactone nanoparticles (atrazine-zein and atrazine-PCL-Ch) were analyzed following the current signals at a fixed applied potential of 0.8 V, in a range between 0.1 and 5 µM, indicating a linear relationship in the measured dose-response curves and a detection limit of 0.9 and 1.1 nM, respectively. Interference studies resulted in no interference from 10 ppb bisphenol A, 1 ppb paraoxon, 100 ppb arsenic, 20 ppb copper, 5 ppb cadmium, and 10 ppb lead at safety limits. Finally, no matrix effect was observed on the biosensor response from wastewater samples and satisfactory recovery values of 106 ± 8% and 93 ± 7% were obtained for atrazine-zein and atrazine-PCL-Ch, respectively. A working stability of 10 h was achieved.

The encapsulation of atrazine into poly(epsilon-caprolactone) nanocapsules has been shown to improve the efficiency of the herbicide and decrease its environmental impacts. In the current work, we evaluated the efficiency of nanoatrazine in the post-emergence control of Alternanthera tenella Colla plants and performed a meta-analysis to compare the results with studies already published with other weeds. The first experiment was carried out in the field, where we observed that nanoatrazine (at 200 g a. i. ha−1) induced higher inhibition of the maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (up to 39%) than conventional atrazine at the same concentration. However, nanoencapsulation did not improve the visually-determined weed control by atrazine. To better understand the response of A. tenella plants to nanoatrazine, a second experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with four-leaf stage plants treated with nano and conventional atrazine at 200, 500, 1000, and 2000 g a. i. ha−1. Nanoatrazine showed higher efficiency (up to 33%) than commercial atrazine in inhibiting photosystem II activity at all doses until 48 h after application. Again, weed control and plant dry mass did not differ between formulations. From the meta-analysis, it was observed that A. tenella plants showed a response to nanoatrazine that differs from other target species, as the gain in efficiency resulting from the nanoencapsulation was restricted to the short-term analysis, and did not result in better weed control. These results reinforce that the efficiency of nanoatrazine is dependent on the studied species.

abstract: The objective of this study was to analyze the phytotoxic effects of poly (ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) nanocapsules on mustard (Brassica juncea) seeds. The nanoformulations were prepared using two protocols: PCL nanocapsules containing Tween as a stabilizer (NC TW) and PCL nanocapsules containing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), a polymer that has emulsifying properties (NC PVA). Two experimental systems were used (nanoformulations sprayed on the substrate and as seed treatment), each one in a factorial scheme with two formulations (NC TW and NC PVA) and five dilutions (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of the stock formulation). In general, intermediary concentrations of NC TW showed higher phytotoxicity than NC PVA, as indicated by sharper reductions in germination and increases in the percentage of abnormal seedlings. However, in the substrate treatment, NC PVA (100%) led to a sharper reduction in germination than NC TW in the same dilution. NC TW-treated seeds presented greater water absorption. In an additional assay with nanocapsules labeled with a fluorescent probe (rhodamine B), NC PVA-treated seeds showed higher fluorescence intensity in the seed coat. In the case of NC TW-treated seeds, the fluorescence signal tended to move to the seed interior as the nanocapsule levels increased. Moreover, the seed treatment with this formulation induced sharper increases in water uptake by the seeds than NC PVA. The different effects induced by NC TW and NC PVA could be related to the different characteristics of the nanocapsules, as the lower size and more negative charge of NC TW might have favored their entrance into the seeds.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Stroke is one of the main causes of death worldwide. Educational interventions on stroke are potentially effective in reducing the period between the onset of symptoms and the initial emergency medical assistance. OBJECTIVES: To assess high school students’ knowledge of stroke. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study conducted in high schools in northeastern Brazil. METHODS: A self-structured questionnaire survey regarding stroke awareness was applied among high school students in northeastern Brazil. Data were collected between 2018 and 2019. The chi-square test and other descriptive statistics were used. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 1,788 students were analyzed. Eighty percent (n = 1430) of them did not have the minimum knowledge on how to act in a stroke situation. Only 10% (n = 179) presented the ideal knowledge on how to act. Males presented lower levels of knowledge on risk factors (odds ratio, OR: 0.62%; 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.49-0.79) and signs and symptoms of stroke (OR: 0.63%; 95% CI: 0.52-0.77). Students with ≥ 10 years of schooling (OR: 1.64%; 95% CI: 1.30-2.07) demonstrated greater knowledge of signs and symptoms of stroke. Students aged 18 years (OR: 1.70%; 95% CI: 1.14-2.52) demonstrated greater knowledge than other ages regarding the telephone number of the emergency medical services. CONCLUSIONS: There was a knowledge deficit with regard to recognizing stroke and activating the emergency medical services. The findings apply to the sample investigated and suggest that there is a need for stroke educational interventions, starting in high school.

Caryocar brasiliense Cambess is a plant species typical of the Cerrado, a Brazilian biome. The fruit of this species is popularly known as pequi, and its oil is used in traditional medicine. However, an important factor hindering the use of pequi oil is its low yield when extracted from the pulp of this fruit. Therefore, in this study, with aim of developing a new herbal medicine, we an-alyzed the toxicity and anti-inflammatory activity of an extract of pequi pulp residue (EPPR), fol-lowing the mechanical extraction of the oil from its pulp. For this purpose, EPPR was prepared and encapsulated in chitosan. The nanoparticles were analyzed, and the cytotoxicity of the encapsu-lated EPPR was evaluated in vitro. After confirming the cytotoxicity of the encapsulated EPPR, the following evaluations were performed with non-encapsulated EPPR: in vitro anti-inflammatory activity, quantification of cytokines, and acute toxicity in vivo. Once the anti-inflammatory activity and absence of toxicity of EPPR were verified, a gel formulation of EPPR was developed for topical use and analyzed for its in vivo anti-inflammatory potential, ocular toxicity, and previous stability assessment. EPPR and the gel containing EPPR showed effective anti-inflammatory activity and lack of toxicity. The formulation was stable. Thus, a new herbal medicine with anti-inflammatory activity can be developed from discarded pequi residue.

Abstract Background The advances in products based on nanotechnology have directed extensive research on low-cost, biologically compatible, and easily degradable materials. Main body Sericin (SER) is a protein mainly composed of glycine, serine, aspartic acid, and threonine amino acids removed from the silkworm cocoon (particularly Bombyx mori and other species). SER is a biocompatible material with economic viability, which can be easily functionalized due to its potential crosslink reactions. Also, SER has inherent biological properties, which makes possible its use as a component of pharmaceutical formulations with several biomedical applications, such as anti-tumor, antimicrobials, antioxidants and as scaffolds for tissue repair as well as participating in molecular mechanisms attributed to the regulation of transcription factors, reduction of inflammatory signaling molecules, stimulation of apoptosis, migration, and proliferation of mesenchymal cells. Conclusion In this review, the recent innovations on SER-based nano-medicines (nanoparticles, micelles, films, hydrogels, and their hybrid systems) and their contributions for non-conventional therapies are discussed considering different molecular mechanisms for promoting their therapeutic applications.

Introduction: This study evaluated the influence of sonic vibration and thermocycling on the bond strength of fiberglass posts using conventional dual-cured and self-adhesive resin cements. Material and Methods: Ninety-six single-rooted endodontically treated teeth were divided randomly into eight groups according to the cement used (dual-cured or self-adhesive resin cement), use of sonic vibration during post accommodation, and aging conditions (24h in distilled water or 5,000 thermal cycles). The fiberglass posts (White Post DC1, FGM) were cleaned with alcohol, treated with silane and cemented with dual-cured (Allcem Core, FGM) or with self-adhesive resin cement (seT, SDI). For groups in which sonic vibration was used, the posts were accommodated, and sonic vibration was applied for 10 s using a special tip placed on top of the post (Sonic Smart Device, FGM). Pull-out tests were performed after storage in distilled water for 24h at 37°C or after thermocycling (5000 cycles, at 5°C and 55°C). The results were evaluated using three-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test (α=0.05). Results: Significant differences were not observed between the bond strengths of dual-cured (87.93±41.81 N) and self-adhesive cement (82.53±41.43 N). Bond strength for the sonic vibration groups (100.36±42.35 N) was significantly higher than for groups without sonic vibration (70.13±34.90 N). There were significant differences between specimens subjected to thermocycling (98.33±39.42 N) and those stored for 24h in distilled water (72.16±39.67 N). Conclusion: It can be concluded that both sonic vibration and thermocycling significantly improved bond strength of fiberglass posts with the two evaluated resin cements.

Abstract Incidents of viral outbreaks have increased at an alarming rate over the past decades. The most recent human coronavirus known as COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) has already spread around the world and shown R0 values from 2.2 to 2.68. However, the ratio between mortality and number of infections seems to be lower in this case in comparison to other human coronaviruses (such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV)). These outbreaks have tested the limits of healthcare systems and have posed serious questions about management using conventional therapies and diagnostic tools. In this regard, the use of nanotechnology offers new opportunities for the development of novel strategies in terms of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 and other viral infections. In this review, we discuss the use of nanotechnology for COVID-19 virus management by the development of nano-based materials, such as disinfectants, personal protective equipment, diagnostic systems and nanocarrier systems, for treatments and vaccine development, as well as the challenges and drawbacks that need addressing.

Rainfall in tropical semi-arid areas may act as a reliable cue for timing bird reproduction, since it precedes future food supply. With this in mind, we set-up a study to test the reproductive response of insectivorous bird to arthropod abundance and rainfall patterns. Sampling occurred in a seasonally dry Neotropical forest, in north-eastern Brazil, between October, 2015 and October 2016, at 14-day intervals. We used brood patch to assess reproductive periodicity of insectivorous birds (eight species, 475 captures, 121 patch records). We sampled arthropods to quantify abundance, using biomass and number of individuals (1755 individuals, 15 Orders). Rainfall temporal distribution was analyzed using daily precipitation data. We used a cross-correlation function to test for correlation and time-lags between the covariates under study. Both the number of reproductively-active birds and arthropod abundance were higher in time periods close to the rainy season. Increase in arthropod biomass in the aerial stratum preceded the period of greatest rainfall by one (14 days, r = 0.44) to three sampling periods (0.47). In contrast, the highest proportion of individuals with brood patches occurred after the main rainfall peak, with the strongest relationship occurring after two (0.52) to four (0.50) time lags. Finally, the proportion of individuals with brood patches was positively correlated with aerial stratum arthropod biomass when five time lags were considered (0.55). Our results support the hypothesis of a temporal process involving rainfall, arthropods and reproduction of insectivorous birds in the wet/dry tropics. However, rainfall did not appear to act as a cue for the timing of reproduction, since records indicated higher arthropod biomass before the main rainfall peak. At least occasionally in the study area, insectivorous bird reproduction peaks after food abundance.

Digitaria insularis (sourgrass) is a monocotyledon weed of difficult control and high invasive behavior. Atrazine is widely applied in the Americas to control weeds in maize culture, but its efficiency against D. insularis is limited. The incorporation of atrazine into poly(epsilon-caprolactone) nanocapsules increased the herbicidal activity against susceptible weeds; however, the potential of this nanoformulation to control atrazine-tolerant weeds including D. insularis has not yet been tested. Here, we evaluated the post-emergent herbicidal activity of nanoatrazine against D. insularis plants during initial developmental stages. The study was carried out in a greenhouse, using pots filled with clay soil. Plants with two or four expanded leaves were treated with conventional or nanoencapsulated atrazine at 50 or 100% of the recommended dosage (1,000 or 2,000 g ∙ ha−1), followed by the evaluation of physiological, growth, and control parameters of the plants. Compared with conventional herbicide, both dosages of nanoatrazine induced greater and faster inhibition of D. insularis photosystem II activity at both developmental stages. Atrazine nanoencapsulation also improved the control of D. insularis plants, especially in the stage with two expanded leaves. In addition, nanoatrazine led to higher decreases of dry weight of fourleaved plants than atrazine. The use of the half-dosage of nanoatrazine was equally or more efficient in affecting most of the evaluated parameters than the conventional formulation at full dosage. Overall, these results suggest that the nanoencapsulation of atrazine potentiated its post-emergent herbicidal activity against D. insularis plants at initial developmental stages, favoring the control of this atrazine-tolerant weed.

The aim of this work was to synthesize polymeric microparticles as carriers for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK fertilizer) for agricultural applications, using polyglycerol (PG) to improve the synthesis procedure. Multivariate experimental designs were employed to obtain a satisfactory synthesis. The desirability function identified the best conditions for preparation of the microparticles as being 100.00 mg of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), 825.00 mg of PG, 9.25 mL of chloroform, and 0.9% w/v of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). This resulted in average encapsulation rates of 94.23% for N, 99.80% for P, and 65.00% for K. The profile of release from the microparticles was according to diffusion following Fick’s Law. These observations confirmed the capacity of the proposed microparticles to sustain a continuous and prolonged release of NPK for the purpose of plant fertilization. Macroabrasion is a technique for the removal of localized white spots using a high-speed, intermittent high speed turbine finishing diamond tip. It is fast, safe, efficient, and an alternative to enamel microabrasion. However, when the stain is deeper, these localized intrinsic stains or defects can be treated with partial direct veneers. A conservative preparation should be done and that allows stratification of the resin to mask the hypoplasia and provide naturalness to the tooth. Thus, the objective of this work is to demonstrate, through a clinical case, macroabrasion and a partial veneer from the preparation, restoration, to the finishing and polishing to remove hypoplastic stains.

Biomonitoring programs need to balance accurate responses in assessments of changes in biological communities with sampling that is fast and low cost. In this study, we evaluated the concordance among fish and phytoplankton communities of streams. We tested the cross-taxa surrogacy, taxonomic, numerical resolution and ecological substitute group (habitat use and trophic guilds) resolution with Procrustes analyses aim of simplifying the biomonitoring process. We collect a total fish abundance of 8,461 individuals, represented by the ecological classes of habitat, including benthic, nektonic, nektobenthic, marginal and trophic guilds by detritivore, terrestrial invertivore, aquatic invertivore, piscivore, algivore and herbivore. We sampled a phytoplankton total density of 1,466.68 individuals/ml, represented by four Morphology-Based Functional Groups and nine Reynolds Functional Groups. Our results don’t support the use of substitute groups among fish and phytoplankton. For fish, habitat use and trophic guild are good surrogates for species-level data. Additionally, our results don’t support the use of functional groups as surrogates for phytoplankton. We suggest the use of higher taxonomic levels (genus and family) and record only the occurrence of species and/or genus for fish and phytoplankton. Our findings contribute to decreasing the costs and time of biomonitoring programs assessments and/or conservation plans on fish and phytoplankton communities of headwater streams.

The aim of this study was to quantify NH3-N losses from conventional, stabilized, slow-release, and controlled-release N fertilizers in a coffee field. The N fertilizers analyzed were prilled urea, prilled urea dissolved in water, ammonium sulfate (AS), ammonium nitrate (AN), urea + Cu + B, urea + adhesive + CaCO3, and urea + NBPT (all with three split applications), as well as blended N fertilizer, urea + elastic resin, urea-formaldehyde, and urea + polyurethane (all applied only once). NH3-N losses (mean of two crop seasons) were statistically higher for urea + adhesive + CaCO3 (27.9% of applied N) in comparison with the other treatments. Loss from prilled urea (23.7%) was less than from urea + adhesive + CaCO3. Losses from urea + NBPT (14.5%) and urea + Cu + B (13.5%) were similar and lower than those from prilled urea. Urea dissolved in water (4.2%) had even lower losses than those treatments, and the lowest losses were observed for AS (0.6%) and AN (0.5%). For the single application fertilizers, higher losses occurred for urea + elastic resin (5.8%), blended N fertilizer (5.5%), and urea + polyurethane (5.2%); and urea-formaldehyde had a lower loss (0.5%). Except for urea + adhesive + CaCO3, all N-fertilizer technologies reduced NH3-N losses compared to prilled urea.

Nanoformulations have been used to improve the delivery of fertilizers, pesticides, and growth regulators, with a focus on more sustainable agriculture. Nanoherbicide research has focused on efficiency gains through targeted delivery and environmental risk reduction. However, research on the behavior and safety of the application of these formulations in cropping systems is still limited. Organic matter contained in cropping systems can change the dynamics of herbicide–soil interactions in the presence of nanoformulations. The aim of this study was to use classical protocols from regulatory studies to understand the retention and mobility dynamics of a metribuzin nanoformulation, compared to a conventional formulation. We used different soil systems and soil with added fresh organic material. The batch method was used for sorption–desorption studies and soil thin layer chromatography for mobility studies, both by radiometric techniques. Sorption parameters for both formulations showed that retention is a reversible process in all soil systems (H~1.0). In deep soil with added fresh organic material, nanoformulation was more sorbed (14.61 ± 1.41%) than commercial formulation (9.72 ± 1.81%) (p < 0.05). However, even with the presence of straw as a physical barrier, metribuzin in nano and conventional formulations was mobile in the soil, indicating that the straw can act as a barrier to reduce herbicide mobility but is not impeditive to herbicide availability in the soil. Our results suggest that environmental safety depends on organic material maintenance in the soil system. The availability can be essential for weed control, associated with nanoformulation efficiency, in relation to the conventional formulation.

Arboviral diseases are a threat to global public health systems, with recent data suggesting that around 40% of the world’s population is at risk of contracting arboviruses. The use of mosquito repellents is an appropriate strategy to avoid humans coming into contact with vectors transmitting these viruses. However, the cost associated with daily applications of repellents can make their use unfeasible for the low-income populations that most need protection. Therefore, the development of effective formulations offers a way to expand access to this means of individual protection. Consequently, research efforts have focused on formulations with smaller quantities of active agents and sustained release technology, aiming to reduce re-applications, toxicity, and cost. The present study investigates the development of nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) loaded with a mixture of the compounds icaridin (synthetic) and geraniol (natural), incorporated in cellulose hydrogel. The NLCs were prepared by the emulsion/solvent evaporation method and were submitted to physicochemical characterization as a function of time (at 0, 15, 30, and 60 days). The prepared system presented an average particle size of 252 ± 5 nm, with encapsulation efficiency of 99% for both of the active compounds. The stability profile revealed that the change of particle size was not significant (p > 0.05), indicating high stability of the system. Rheological characterization of the gels containing NLCs showed that all formulations presented pseudoplastic and thixotropic behavior, providing satisfactory spreadability and long shelf life. Morphological analysis using atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed the presence of spherical nanoparticles (252 ± 5 nm) in the cellulose gel matrix. Permeation assays showed low fluxes of the active agents through a Strat-M® membrane, with low permeability coefficients, indicating that the repellents would be retained on the surface to which they are applied, rather than permeating the tissue. These findings open perspectives for the use of hybrid formulations consisting of gels containing nanoparticles that incorporate repellents effective against arthropod-borne virus. These systems could potentially provide improvements considering the issues of effectiveness, toxicity, and safety.

Aim: To evaluate the influence of cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) coping fabrication methods and ceramic application on the marginal and internal fit of metal-ceramic crowns. Methods: Co-Cr copings for metal-ceramic crowns were prepared by lost wax casting or CAD-CAM machining of sintered blocks. The fit was analyzed using the silicone replica technique at four assessment points: marginal gap (MG), axial wall (AW), axio-occlusal (AO) angle, and central occlusal (CO) wall. After the initial analysis, the copings were ceramic-veneered with the layering technique, and the fit was again determined. Data were statistically analyzed by paired and unpaired Student’s-t test (α=0.05). Results: Marginal and internal fit before ceramic application according to the coping manufacturing method showed significant differences only at CO (p < 0.001), with milled copings (137.98±16.71 μm) showing higher gap values than cast copings (112.86±8.57 μm). For cast copings, there were significant differences at MG (before 109.13±8.79 μm; after 102.78±7.18 μm) and CO (before 112.86±8.57 μm; after 104.07±10.63 μm) when comparing the fit before and after ceramic firing. For milled copings, there was significant difference only at AO (before 116.39±9.64 μm; after 108.54±9.26 μm). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the coping fabrication method influenced the internal fit. Ceramic firing maintained or improved the fit of the metal-ceramic crowns. The marginal discrepancy of all restorations, before and after ceramic firing, can be considered clinically acceptable.

Esse estudo tem por objetivo apresentar uma revisão integrativa de literatura para analisar o estado da arte de pesquisas publicadas sobre processos de resiliência individual/familiar e redes de apoio em vítimas de acidente de trânsito na situação pós acidente. As bases utilizadas foram PsycInfo, PubMed, Web Of Science e SciELO com os descritores: resiliência; acidentes de trânsito; redes de apoio e resiliência familiar. Foram encontrados 12 artigos como resultado da análise completa dessa revisão. Os achados demostraram escassez de estudos que relacionam simultaneamente: resiliência, acidentes de trânsito, redes de apoio e resiliência familiar. Ademais, grande parte das pesquisas sobre acidente de trânsito possui foco na prevenção. Consideradas as limitações encontradas sugere-se que maior número de pesquisas seja realizado em contextos pós acidente para possibilitar o desenvolvimento de políticas públicas com vistas a melhor qualidade de vida dessa população.

Assessment of energy efficiency (EE) enables the evaluation of the sustainability of agrosystems, as well as decision-making regarding reduction in production costs and environmental pollution and even to increase production in a sustainable way. In this context, the objective of this study was to assess energy efficiency in maize in different regions of Brazil. For this purpose, 32 areas of maize crop distributed across the major producing states and regions were assessed. Energy inputs and outputs of agricultural operations and/or agricultural inputs were calculated by multiplying the amount used by their calorific value or energy coefficient at each stage of production. Energy efficiency was calculated as the ratio between the total output energy and the total input energy during the production process. For every megajoule (MJ) of energy consumed in the production of second-crop maize and first-crop maize seasons, 9.9 and 8.7 MJ respectively of renewable energy were produced in the form of grain. In both maize cropping seasons, most of the energy use was attributed to fertilizers, herbicides and fuel. To be representative the evaluation of energy efficiency of the maize crop should be performed in different Brazilian cultivation regions, as it will represent different edaphoclimatic and management conditions spread over the national territory within an agricultural year.

BackgroundBisphosphonates are drugs widely used to reduce bone resorption, increase bone mineral density and control age-related bone loss. Although there are studies reporting differences in bone structure between young and old adults, it is still difficult to predict changes related to bone aging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of age and sodium alendronate on bone repair of femoral fractures in rats.MethodsWistar rats (n = 40) were allocated into groups: O (control old-rats), Y (control young-rats), OA (alendronate old-rats) and YA (alendronate young-rats). All animals underwent linear fracture surgery followed by fixation. Groups OA and YA received 1 mg/kg alendronate three times a week until euthanasia. Biochemical analysis of calcium and alkaline phosphatase was done. After euthanasia, femurs were evaluated in relation to cross-section and flexural strength, with three-point bending test. Data were submitted to statistical analysis with significance level of 0.05.ResultsThere was no difference in calcium and alkaline phosphatase levels (p > 0.05). Young animals presented lower cross-section than older animals (p < 0.05). Only fractured side, young animals presented major flexural strength than older animals (p < 0.05). There was no difference between the animals that used or not alendronate in relation to cross-section and flexural strength (p > 0.05). When compared fractured and non-fractured femurs, major cross-section on fractured side was observed (p < 0.05). Flexural strength presented higher values in femurs on non-fractured side (p < 0.05). There was correlation of weight and cross-section (R = +0.91) and weight with flexural strength of fractured and non-fractured side, respectively (R = −0.97 and −0.71).ConclusionIn short, there was no difference of calcium and alkaline phosphatase during the bone repair process. Age has influence in cross-section and flexural strength. Alendronate showed no association with these factors.

Abstract Pesticides and fertilizers are widely used to enhance agriculture yields, although the fraction of the pesticides applied in the field that reaches the targets is less than 0.1%. Such indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides is disadvantageous due to the cost implications and increasing human health and environmental concerns. In recent years, the utilization of nanotechnology to create novel formulations has shown great potential for diminishing the indiscriminate use of pesticides and providing environmentally safer alternatives. Smart nano-based pesticides are designed to efficiently delivery sufficient amounts of active ingredients in response to biotic and/or abiotic stressors that act as triggers, employing targeted and controlled release mechanisms. This review discusses the current status of stimuli-responsive release systems with potential to be used in agriculture, highlighting the challenges and drawbacks that need to be overcome in order to accelerate the global commercialization of smart nanopesticides.
