Abstract

Hierarchical core–shell (C–S) heterostructures composed of a NiO shell deposited onto stacked‐cup carbon nanotubes (SCCNTs) are synthesized by atomic layer deposition (ALD). A film of NiO particles (0.80–21.8 nm in thickness) is uniformly deposited onto the inner and outer walls of the SCCNTs. The electrical resistance of the samples is found to increase of many orders of magnitude with the increasing of the NiO thickness. The response of NiO–SCCNT sensors toward low concentrations of acetone and ethanol at 200 °C is studied. The sensing mechanism is based on the modulation of the hole‐accumulation region in the NiO shell layer upon chemisorption of the reducing gas molecules. The electrical conduction mechanism is further studied by the incorporation of an Al2O3 dielectric layer at NiO and SCCNT interfaces. The investigations on NiO–Al2O3–SCCNT, Al2O3–SCCNT, and NiO–SCCNT coaxial heterostructures reveal that the sensing mechanism is strictly related to the NiO shell layer. The remarkable performance of the NiO–SCCNT sensors toward acetone and ethanol benefits from the conformal coating by ALD, large surface area of the SCCNTs, and the optimized p‐NiO shell layer thickness followed by the radial modulation of the space‐charge region.

35. Photo-electrochemical properties of CuO–TiO2 heterojunctions for glucose sensing.

Abstract

Electrochemical sensors for monitoring biochemical substances are attracting considerable attention. These devices are usually based on enzymes that are sensitive and very specific. Still, the activity of those enzymes is lost with changes in temperature or pH. Non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors – fabricated via the modification of the electrode surface with metal oxide nanoparticles – are an ideal answer to address that problem. In this study, we investigated the photo-electrochemical properties of CuO–TiO2 heterojunctions for glucose sensing in alkaline media. A combination of high-resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, spatially resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction, was used to study in detail the microstructures of the prepared specimens. These results highlighted the strong intertwining between the TiO2 nanoparticles and the Cu-based nanoparticles, which present a metallic core with a CuO rich surface. In addition, we showed that CuO, joint to TiO2, has smaller size compared to pure CuO, which entails larger specific surface area available for the glucose electro-oxidation, which consequently enhanced the electrochemical features. The influence of Cu loading over the sensing performance of TiO2 was examined in detail carrying out electrochemical sensing tests under dark, laboratory and halogen lamp irradiation conditions. Results demonstrated that, under halogen lamp irradiation, modified CuO–TiO2 electrodes showed a specific response signal that is four times higher than that of pure CuO. Those increased photo-electrochemical properties in CuO–TiO2 heterojunctions are likely due to a synergistic effect between the microstructural characteristics and effective separation of photo-generated excitons created at the heterojunction interface. Results of this study offer applicable guidelines for designing photo-electrochemical screen-printed electrodes based on nano-sized CuO on titania for efficient detection of glucose. Abstract

Gold-cerium oxide (Au/CeO2) composite was synthesized by a deposition-precipitation method and used to fabricate a highly sensitive non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) detection. The morphology and microstructure of the Au/CeO2 composite was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). UV-Vis spectroscopy showed a strong plasmonic absorbance (in the range of 500-650 nm) due to Au nanoparticles deposited onto the surface of ceria. Sensing tests carried out by cyclic voltammetry (CV) showed that the Au/CeO2-composite-modified screen-printed carbon electrode exhibited electrocatalytic response to H2O2. By chronoamperometry, a detection limit (S/N=3) as low as 5 µM and a sensitivity of 27.1 µA mM-1cm-2 were measured. These results open the route for a potential use of the fabricated Au/CeO2-based sensor to improve the H2O2 detection ability in many industrial fields.
