12. Phase space analysis of two-wavelength interferometry

Abstract

Multiple wavelength phase shifting interferometry is widely used to extend the unambiguous range (UR) beyond that of a single wavelength. Towards this end, many algorithms have been developed to calculate the optical path difference (OPD) from the phase measurements of multiple wavelengths. These algorithms fail when phase error exceeds a specific threshold. In this paper, we examine this failure condition. We introduce a "phase-space" view of multi-wavelength algorithms and demonstrate how this view may be used to understand an algorithm's robustness to phase measurement error. In particular, we show that the robustness of the synthetic wavelength algorithm deteriorates near the edges of its UR. We show that the robustness of de Groot's extended range algorithm [Appl. Opt. 33, 5948 (1994)] depends on both wavelength and OPD in a non-trivial manner. Further, we demonstrate that the algorithm developed by Houairi & Cassaing (HC) [J. Opt. Soc. Am. 26, 2503 (2009)] results in uniform robustness across the entire UR. Finally, we explore the effect that wavelength error has on the robustness of the HC algorithm., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

21. Coherent manipulation of Rydberg polaritons

Abstract

This thesis contains a statistical analysis of the resonant transmission of photons through an ensemble of cold Rubidium 87 atoms in-vacuo, where the resonant excited state is coupled to one or two highly-excited Rydberg states via optical and microwave fields. Transient emission with decay rates far below the excited state decay rate Γe are observed. Analysis of the second-order auto-correlation statistic reveals Rydberg-mediated anti-bunching of transient photons, a signature of Rydberg blockade. The application of resonant microwave fields creates strong resonant interactions between Rydberg atoms. This presents a new, transient regime for the study of interaction-induced dephasing and blockade physics in cold atomic ensembles. A demonstration of a collective Rydberg qubit is presented. Quantum information is encoded into a superposition of Rydberg polariton states with a direct photonic interface suitable for applications in quantum networking. The coherence of Rydberg qubits is demonstrated through Ramsey interferometry. Sensitivity to AC and DC electric fields through differential Stark shifts of the qubit states is confirmed through a study of interferometric fringe shifts and dephasing. Controlled removal of atoms from the collective qubit under the action of a resonant scattering beam is shown to diminish readout fidelity but have little effect upon coherence due to the collective nature of the encoding. Theoretical models of the effect of photon scattering and electrical noise on the Rydberg qubit are confirmed experimentally. Ramsey fringe visibility is observed to scale with the fourth power of an applied noise field, matching a theoretical model.

Abstract

Purpose The role of temporary ovarian suppression with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa) during chemotherapy as a strategy to preserve ovarian function and fertility in premenopausal women remains controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis using individual patient-level data was conducted to better assess the efficacy and safety of this strategy in patients with early breast cancer. Methods The trials in which premenopausal women with early breast cancer were randomly assigned to receive (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy alone or with concurrent GnRHa were eligible for inclusion. Primary end points were premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) rate and post-treatment pregnancy rate. Disease-free survival and overall survival were secondary end points. Because each study represents a cluster, statistical analyses were performed using a random effects model. Results A total of 873 patients from five trials were included. POI rate was 14.1% in the GnRHa group and 30.9% in the control group (adjusted odds ratio, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.26 to 0.57; P < .001). A total of 37 (10.3%) patients had at least one post-treatment pregnancy in the GnRHa group and 20 (5.5%) in the control group (incidence rate ratio, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.06 to 3.15; P = .030). No significant differences in disease-free survival (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.01; 95% CI, 0.72 to 1.42; P = .999) and overall survival (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.42 to 1.06; P = .083) were observed between groups. Conclusion Our findings provide evidence for the efficacy and safety of temporary ovarian suppression with GnRHa during chemotherapy as an available option to reduce the likelihood of chemotherapy-induced POI and potentially improve future fertility in premenopausal patients with early breast cancer.
