An optimization-based image reconstruction algorithm is developed for contrast enhanced digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) using dual-energy scanning. The algorithm minimizes directional total variation (TV) with a data discrepancy and non-negativity constraints. Iodinated contrast agent (ICA) imaging is performed by reconstructing images from dual-energy DBT data followed by weighted subtraction. Physical DBT data is acquired with a Siemens Mammomat scanner of a structured breast phantom with ICA inserts. Results are shown for both directional TV minimization and filtered back-projection for reference. Large language models (LLMs) have become increasingly integrated with various applications. To ensure that LLMs do not generate unsafe responses, they are aligned with safeguards that specify what content is restricted. However, such alignment can be bypassed to produce prohibited content using a technique commonly referred to as jailbreak. Different systems have been proposed to perform the jailbreak automatically. These systems rely on evaluation methods to determine whether a jailbreak attempt is successful. However, our analysis reveals that current jailbreak evaluation methods have two limitations. (1) Their objectives lack clarity and do not align with the goal of identifying unsafe responses. (2) They oversimplify the jailbreak result as a binary outcome, successful or not. In this paper, we propose three metrics, safeguard violation, informativeness, and relative truthfulness, to evaluate language model jailbreak. Additionally, we demonstrate how these metrics correlate with the goal of different malicious actors. To compute these metrics, we introduce a multifaceted approach that extends the natural language generation evaluation method after preprocessing the response. We evaluate our metrics on a benchmark dataset produced from three malicious intent datasets and three jailbreak systems. The benchmark dataset is labeled by three annotators. We compare our multifaceted approach with three existing jailbreak evaluation methods. Experiments demonstrate that our multifaceted evaluation outperforms existing methods, with F1 scores improving on average by 17% compared to existing baselines. Our findings motivate the need to move away from the binary view of the jailbreak problem and incorporate a more comprehensive evaluation to ensure the safety of the language model.

Metis, the coronagraph on board Solar Orbiter, provides for the first time coronagraphic imaging in the ultraviolet HI Ly-alpha line and, simultaneously, in polarized visible light, thus providing a host of information on the properties of CMEs and solar eruptions like their overall dynamics, time evolution, mass content, and outflow propagation velocity in the expanding corona. We analyzed in this work six CMEs observed by Metis between April and October 2021, which are characterized by a very strong HI Ly-alpha emission. We studied in particular the morphology, kinematics, and the temporal and radial evolution of the emission of such events, focusing on the brightest UV features. The kinematics of the eruptive events under consideration were studied by determining the height-time profiles of the brightest parts on the Metis plane of the sky. Furthermore, the 3D position in the heliosphere of the CMEs were determined by employing co-temporal images from two other coronagraphs: LASCO/C2 onboard SOHO, and COR2 onboard STEREO-A. Finally, the radiometrically calibrated Metis images of the bright UV features were analyzed to provide estimates of their volume and density. From the kinematics and radiometric analyses, we obtained indications of the temperatures of the bright UV cores of these events. The analysis of these strong UV-emitting features associated with coronal mass ejections demonstrates the capabilities of the current constellation of space coronagraphs, Metis, LASCO/C2, and COR2, in providing a complete characterization of the structure and dynamics of eruptive events in their propagation phase from their inception up to several solar radii. Furthermore, we show how the unique capabilities of the Metis instrument to observe these events in both HI Ly-alpha line and polarized VL radiation allow plasma diagnostics on the thermal state of these events., Comment: 26 pages, 26 figures, 2 appendices

The Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) is a quantum facility for studying ultra-cold gases in the microgravity environment of the International Space Station. It enables research in a temperature regime and force-free environment inaccessible to terrestrial laboratories. In the microgravity environment, observation times over a few seconds and temperatures below 100 pK are achievable, unlocking the potential to observe new quantum phenomena. CAL launched to the International Space Station in May 2018 and has been operating since then as the world's first multi-user facility for studying ultra\-cold atoms in space. CAL is the first quantum science facility to produce the fifth state of matter called a Bose-Einstein condensate with rubidium-87 and potassium-41 in Earth orbit. We will give an overview of CAL's operational setup, outline its contributions to date, present planned upgrades for the next few years, and consider design choices for microgravity BEC successor-mission planning., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. We report CFHT/SITELLE imaging Fourier Transform Spectrograph observations of the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) of galaxy cluster Abell 2390 at z=0.228. The BCG displays a prominent cone of emission in H$\alpha$, H$\beta$, [NII], and [OII] to the North-West with PA = 42$^o$, 4.4 arcsec in length (15.9 kpc), which is associated with elongated and asymmetric Chandra soft X-ray emission. The H$\alpha$ flux map also contains a "hook" of H$\alpha$ and [NII] emission resulting in a broadened northern edge to the cone. Using SITELLE/LUCI software we extract emission line flux, velocity, velocity dispersion, and continuum maps, and utilize them to derive flux ratio maps to determine ionization mechanisms and dynamical information in the BCG's emission line region. The Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagnostics on the BCG cone indicate a composite ionization origin of photoionization due to star formation and shock. Strong LINER-like emission is seen in the nuclear region which hosts an AGN. As Abell 2390 is a cool-core cluster, we suggest that the cooling flow is falling onto the central BCG and interacting with the central AGN. The AGN produces jets that inflate "bubbles" of plasma in the ICM, as is often observed in local galaxy clusters. Furthermore, combining signs of AGN activities from radio, optical emission line and X-ray data over a large range of physical scale, we find evidence for three possible episodes of AGN activity in different epochs associated with the Abell 2390 BCG., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted by MNRAS

The slow solar wind belt in the quiet corona, observed with the Metis coronagraph on board Solar Orbiter on May 15, 2020, during the activity minimum of the cycle 24, in a field of view extending from 3.8 $R_\odot$ to 7.0 $R_\odot$, is formed by a slow and dense wind stream running along the coronal current sheet, accelerating in the radial direction and reaching at 6.8 $R_\odot$ a speed within 150 km s$^{-1}$ and 190 km s$^{-1}$, depending on the assumptions on the velocity distribution of the neutral hydrogen atoms in the coronal plasma. The slow stream is separated by thin regions of high velocity shear from faster streams, almost symmetric relative to the current sheet, with peak velocity within 175 km s$^{-1}$ and 230 km s$^{-1}$ at the same coronal level. The density-velocity structure of the slow wind zone is discussed in terms of the expansion factor of the open magnetic field lines that is known to be related to the speed of the quasi-steady solar wind, and in relation to the presence of a web of quasi separatrix layers, S-web, the potential sites of reconnection that release coronal plasma into the wind. The parameters characterizing the coronal magnetic field lines are derived from 3D MHD model calculations. The S-web is found to coincide with the latitudinal region where the slow wind is observed in the outer corona and is surrounded by thin layers of open field lines expanding in a non-monotonic way.

One of the challenges in understanding the quenching processes for galaxies is connecting progenitor star-forming populations to their descendant quiescent populations over cosmic time. Here we attempt a novel approach to this challenge by assuming that the underlying stellar mass distribution of galaxies is not significantly altered during environmental quenching processes that solely affect the gas content of cluster galaxies, such as strangulation and ram-pressure stripping. Using the deep, high-resolution photometry of the Hubble Frontier Fields, we create resolved stellar mass maps for both cluster and field galaxies, from which we determine 2D S\'ersic profiles, and obtain S\'ersic indices and half-mass radii. We classify the quiescent cluster galaxies into disk-like and bulge-like populations based on their S\'ersic indices, and find that bulge-like quiescent galaxies dominate the quiescent population at higher masses ($M_\star > 10^{9.5}M_\odot$), whereas disk-like quiescent galaxies dominate at lower masses ($10^{8.5}M_\odot< M_\star < 10^{9.5}M_\odot$). Using both the S\'ersic indices and half-mass radii, we identify a population of quiescent galaxies in clusters that are "morphological analogues" of field star-forming galaxies. These analogues are interpreted to be star-forming galaxies that had been environmentally quenched. We use these morphological analogues to compute the environmental-quenching efficiency, and we find that the efficiency decreases with increasing stellar mass. We present a new correlation method for deriving the F-corona intensity distribution, which is based on the analysis of the evolution of the total and polarized visible light (VL) images. We studied the one-month variation profiles of the total and polarized brightness acquired with Large Angle Spectrometric COronagraph (LASCO-C2) and found that in some regions they are highly correlated. Assuming that the F-corona does not vary significantly on a timescale of one month, we estimated its intensity in the high-correlation regions and reconstructed the corresponding intensity maps both during the solar-minimum and solar-maximum periods. Systematic uncertainties were estimated by performing dedicated simulations. We compared the resulting F-corona images with those determined using the inversion technique and found that the correlation method provides a smoother intensity distribution. We also obtained that the F-corona images calculated for consecutive months show no significant variation. Finally, we note that this method can be applied to the future high-cadence VL observations carried out with the Metis/Solar Orbiter coronagraph., Comment: 16 pages, 21 figures

The investigation of the wind in the solar corona initiated with the observations of the resonantly scattered UV emission of the coronal plasma obtained with UVCS-SOHO, designed to measure the wind outflow speed by applying the Doppler dimming diagnostics. Metis on Solar Orbiter complements the UVCS spectroscopic observations, performed during solar activity cycle 23, by simultaneously imaging the polarized visible light and the HI Ly-alpha corona in order to obtain high-spatial and temporal resolution maps of the outward velocity of the continuously expanding solar atmosphere. The Metis observations, on May 15, 2020, provide the first HI Ly-alpha images of the extended corona and the first instantaneous map of the speed of the coronal plasma outflows during the minimum of solar activity and allow us to identify the layer where the slow wind flow is observed. The polarized visible light (580-640 nm), and the UV HI Ly-alpha (121.6 nm) coronal emissions, obtained with the two Metis channels, are combined in order to measure the dimming of the UV emission relative to a static corona. This effect is caused by the outward motion of the coronal plasma along the direction of incidence of the chromospheric photons on the coronal neutral hydrogen. The plasma outflow velocity is then derived as a function of the measured Doppler dimming. The static corona UV emission is simulated on the basis of the plasma electron density inferred from the polarized visible light. This study leads to the identification, in the velocity maps of the solar corona, of the high-density layer about +/-10 deg wide, centered on the extension of a quiet equatorial streamer present at the East limb where the slowest wind flows at about (160 +/- 18) km/s from 4 Rs to 6 Rs. Beyond the boundaries of the high-density layer, the wind velocity rapidly increases, marking the transition between slow and fast wind in the corona.

We use ZFIRE and ZFOURGE observations with the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting tool Prospector to reconstruct the star formation histories (SFHs) of proto-cluster and field galaxies at $z\sim 2 $ and compare our results to the TNG100 run of the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulation suite. In the observations, we find that massive proto-cluster galaxies ($\log[{\rm M}_{\ast}/{\rm M}_{\odot}]>$10.5) form $45 \pm 8 \%$ of their total stellar mass in the first $2$ Gyr of the Universe compared to $31 \pm 2 \%$ formed in the field galaxies. In both observations and simulations, massive proto-cluster galaxies have a flat/declining SFH with decreasing redshift compared to rising SFH in their field counterparts. Using IllustrisTNG, we find that massive galaxies ($\log[{\rm M}_{\ast}/{\rm M}_{\odot}] \geq 10.5$) in both environments are on average $\approx190$ Myr older than low mass galaxies ($\log[{\rm M}_{\ast}/{\rm M}_{\odot}]= 9-9.5$). However, the difference in mean stellar ages of cluster and field galaxies is minimal when considering the full range in stellar mass ($\log[{\rm M}_{\ast}/{\rm M}_{\odot}] \geq 9$). We explore the role of mergers in driving the SFH in IllustrisTNG and find that massive cluster galaxies consistently experience mergers with low gas fraction compared to other galaxies after 1 Gyr from the Big Bang. The Metis coronagraph is one of the remote sensing instruments hosted on board the ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter mission. Metis is devoted to carry out the first simultaneous imaging of the solar corona in both visible light (VL) and ultraviolet (UV). High-energy particles penetrate spacecraft materials and may limit the performance of on-board instruments. A study of galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) tracks observed in the first VL images gathered by Metis during the commissioning phase for a total of 60 seconds of exposure time is presented here. A similar analysis is planned for the UV channel. A prediction of the GCR flux up to hundreds of GeV is made here for the first part of the Solar Orbiter mission to study the Metis coronagraph performance. GCR model predictions are compared to observations gathered on board Solar Orbiter by the EPD/HET experiment in the range 10 MeV-100 MeV in the summer 2020 and with previous measurements. Estimated cosmic-ray fluxes above 70 MeV n$^{-1}$ have been also parameterized and used for Monte Carlo simulations aiming at reproducing the cosmic-ray track observations in the Metis coronagraph VL images. The same parameterizations can also be used to study the performance of other detectors. By comparing observations of cosmic-ray tracks in the Metis VL images with FLUKA Monte Carlo simulations of cosmic-ray interactions in the VL detector, it is found that cosmic rays fire a fraction of the order of 10$^{-4}$ of the whole image pixel sample. Therefore, cosmic rays do not affect sensibly the quality of Metis VL images. It is also found that the overall efficiency for cosmic-ray identification in the Metis VL images is approximately equal to the contribution of Z$>$2 particles. Revealing the cosmic reionisation history is at the frontier of extragalactic astronomy. The power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarisation can be used to constrain the reionisation history. Here we propose a CMB-independent method using fast radio bursts (FRBs) to directly measure the ionisation fraction of the intergalactic medium (IGM) as a function of redshift. FRBs are new astronomical transients with millisecond timescales. Their dispersion measure (DM$_{\rm IGM}$) is an indicator of the amount of ionised material in the IGM. Since the differential of DM$_{\rm IGM}$ against redshift is proportional to the ionisation fraction, our method allows us to directly measure the reionisation history without any assumption on its functional shape. As a proof of concept, we constructed mock non-repeating FRB sources to be detected with the Square Kilometre Array, assuming three different reionisation histories with the same optical depth of Thomson scattering. We considered three cases of redshift measurements: (A) spectroscopic redshift for all mock data, (B) spectroscopic redshift for 10% of mock data, and (C) redshift estimated from an empirical relation of FRBs between their time-integrated luminosity and rest-frame intrinsic duration. In all cases, the reionisation histories are consistently reconstructed from the mock FRB data using our method. Environmental effects are crucial to the understanding of the evolution of galaxies in dense environments, such as galaxy clusters. Using the large field-of-view of SITELLE, the unique imaging fourier transform spectrograph at CFHT, we are able to obtain 2D spectral information for a large and complete sample of cluster galaxies out to the infall region. We describe a pipeline developed to identify emission line galaxies (ELGs) from the datacube using cross-correlation techniques. We present results based on the spatial offsets between the emission-line regions and stellar continua in ELGs from two z$\sim$0.25 galaxy clusters, Abell 2390 and Abell 2465. We find a preference in the offsets being pointed away from the cluster center. Combining the two clusters, there is a 3$\sigma$ excess for high-velocity galaxies within the virial radius having the offsets to be pointed away from the cluster center. Assuming the offset being a proxy for the velocity vector of a galaxy, as expected from ram pressure stripping, this excess indicates that ram pressure stripping occurs most effectively during the first passage of an infalling galaxy, leading to the quenching of its star formation. We also find that, outside the virial region, the continuum-normalized H$\alpha$ line flux for infalling galaxies with large offsets are on average lower than those with small or no measurable offset, further supporting ram pressure as a dominant quenching mechanism during the initial infall stages., Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

In the local (redshift z~0) Universe, collisional ring galaxies make up only ~0.01% of galaxies and are formed by head-on galactic collisions that trigger radially propagating density waves. These striking systems provide key snapshots for dissecting galactic disks and are studied extensively in the local Universe. However, not much is known about distant (z>0.1) collisional rings. Here we present a detailed study of a ring galaxy at a look-back time of 10.8 Gyr (z=2.19). Compared with our Milky Way, this galaxy has a similar stellar mass, but has a stellar half-light radius that is 1.5-2.2 times larger and is forming stars 50 times faster. The large, diffuse stellar light outside the star-forming ring, combined with a radial velocity on the ring and an intruder galaxy nearby, provides evidence for this galaxy hosting a collisional ring. If the ring is secularly evolved, the implied large bar in a giant disk would be inconsistent with the current understanding of the earliest formation of barred spirals. Contrary to previous predictions, this work suggests that massive collisional rings were as rare 11 Gyr ago as they are today. To understand how strong emission line galaxies (ELGs) contribute to the overall growth of galaxies and star formation history of the universe, we target Strong ELGs (SELGs) from the ZFOURGE imaging survey that have blended (Hb+[OIII]) rest-frame equivalent widths of >230A and 2.560%, i.e. the inferred gas masses can easily fuel a starburst to double stellar masses within ~10-100 Myr. Combined with recent results using ZFOURGE, our analysis indicates that 1) strong [OIII]5007A emission signals an early episode of intense stellar growth in low mass (Mstar<0.1M*) galaxies and 2) many, if not most, galaxies at z>3 go through this starburst phase. If true, low-mass galaxies with strong [OIII]5007A emission (EW_rest>200A) may be an increasingly important source of ionizing UV radiation at z>3., Comment: Astrophysical Journal, in press

We use K-band spectroscopic data from the Multi-Object Spectroscopic Emission Line (MOSEL) survey to analyze the kinematic properties of galaxies at z>3. Our sample consists of 34 galaxies at 3.0 10.2 at z > 3 have 56 +/- 21 km/s lower integrated velocity dispersion compared to galaxies at z ~ 2 of similar stellar mass. Massive galaxies at z > 3 have either a flat or declining star formation history (SFH), whereas similar stellar mass galaxies at z~2.0 exhibit a slight peak in the past 500 Myrs. Comparing with the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulation, we find that (i) the dynamical mass of massive galaxies in simulations (log(M_star) > 10.0) increases by ~0.1 dex at a fixed stellar mass between z=2.0-3.0, and (ii) dynamical mass growth is coupled with a rapid rise in the ex-situ stellar mass fraction (stars accreted from other galaxies) for massive galaxies at z < 3.5. We speculate that the rising contribution of ex-situ stellar mass to the total stellar mass growth of massive galaxies is driving the higher integrated velocity dispersion and rising SFHs of massive galaxies at z~2.0 compared to galaxies of similar stellar masses at z > 3., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The global star formation rates (SFR) of galaxies at fixed stellar masses increase with redshift and are known to vary with environment unto z~2. We explore here whether the changes in the star formation rates can also apply to the electron densities of the inter-stellar medium (ISM) by measuring the [OII] (3727A/3729A) ratio for cluster and field galaxies at z~2. We measure a median electron density of ne = 366+/-84 cm-3 for six galaxies (with 1-sigma scatter = 163 cm-3) in the UDS proton-cluster at z=1.62. We find that the median electron density of galaxies in the UDS photo-cluster environment is three times higher compared to the median electron density of field galaxies (ne = 113+/- 63 cm-3 and 1-sigma scatter = 79 cm-3) at comparable redshifts, stellar mass and SFR. However, we note that a sample of six photo-cluster galaxies is insufficient to reliably measure the electron density in the average porto-cluster environment at z~2. We conclude that the electron density increases with redshift in both cluster and field environments up to z~2 (ne = 30 +/- 1 cm-3 for z ~ 0 to ne =254+/- 76 cm-3 for z~1.5). The ZFIRE survey has spectroscopically confirmed two proto-clusters using the MOSFIRE instrument on Keck 1: one at z=2.095 in COSMOS and another at z=1.62 in UDS. Here we use an updated ZFIRE dataset to derive the properties of ionized gas regions of proto-cluster galaxies by extracting fluxes from emission lines H$\beta$ 4861\AA, [OIII] 5007\AA, H$\alpha$ 6563\AA, [NII] 6585\AA, and [SII] 6716,6731\AA. We measure gas-phase metallicity of members in both proto-clusters using two indicators, including a strong-line indicator relatively independent of ionization parameter and electron density. Proto-cluster and field galaxies in both UDS and COSMOS lie on the same Mass-Metallicity Relation with both metallicity indicators. We compare our results to recent IllustrisTNG results, which reports no significant gas-phase metallicity offset between proto-cluster and field galaxies until z=1.5. This is in agreement with our observed metallicities, where no offset is measured between proto-cluster and field populations. We measure tentative evidence from stacked spectra that UDS high mass proto-cluster and field galaxies have differing [OIII]/H$\beta$ ratios, however these results are dependent on the sample size of the high mass stacks., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

We perform a kinematic and morphological analysis of 44 star-forming galaxies at $z\sim2$ in the COSMOS legacy field using near-infrared spectroscopy from Keck/MOSFIRE and F160W imaging from CANDELS/3D-HST as part of the ZFIRE survey. Our sample consists of cluster and field galaxies from $2.0 < z < 2.5$ with K band multi-object slit spectroscopic measurements of their H$\alpha$ emission lines. H$\alpha$ rotational velocities and gas velocity dispersions are measured using the Heidelberg Emission Line Algorithm (HELA), which compares directly to simulated 3D data-cubes. Using a suite of simulated emission lines, we determine that HELA reliably recovers input S$_{0.5}$ and angular momentum at small offsets, but $V_{2.2}/\sigma_g$ values are offset and highly scattered. We examine the role of regular and irregular morphology in the stellar mass kinematic scaling relations, deriving the kinematic measurement S$_{0.5}$, and finding $\log(S_{0.5}) = (0.38\pm0.07)\log(M/M_{\odot}-10) + (2.04\pm0.03)$ with no significant offset between morphological populations and similar levels of scatter ($\sim0.16$ dex). Additionally, we identify a correlation between M$_{\star}$ and $V_{2.2}/\sigma_g$ for the total sample, showing an increasing level of rotation dominance with increasing M$_{\star}$, and a high level of scatter for both regular and irregular galaxies. We estimate the specific angular momenta ($j_{disk}$) of these galaxies and find a slope of $0.36\pm0.12$, shallower than predicted without mass-dependent disk growth, but this result is possibly due to measurement uncertainty at M$_{\star}$ $<$ 9.5. However, through a K-S test we find irregular galaxies to have marginally higher $j_{disk}$ values than regular galaxies, and high scatter at low masses in both populations., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We compare galaxy scaling relations as a function of environment at $z\sim2$ with our ZFIRE survey where we have measured H$\alpha$ fluxes for 90 star-forming galaxies selected from a mass-limited [$\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot})>9$] sample based on ZFOURGE. The cluster galaxies (37) are part of a confirmed system at z=2.095 and the field galaxies (53) are at $1.92\times10^{11} L_{\odot}$). Because the LIRGs in our combined sample are $\sim5$ times more massive than the low-IR galaxies, their radii are $\sim70$% larger. To track stellar growth, we separate galaxies into those that lie above, on, and below the H$\alpha$ star-forming main sequence (SFMS) using $\Delta$SFR$(M_{\star})=\pm0.2$ dex. Galaxies above the SFMS (starbursts) tend to have higher H$\alpha$ SFR surface densities and younger light-weighted stellar ages compared to galaxies below the SFMS. Our results indicate that starbursts (+SFMS) in the cluster and field at $z\sim2$ are growing their stellar cores. Lastly, we compare to the (SFR-$M_{\star}$) relation from RHAPSODY cluster simulations and find the predicted slope is nominally consistent with the observations. We perform a kinematic analysis of galaxies at $z\sim2$ in the COSMOS legacy field using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy from Keck/MOSFIRE as part of the ZFIRE survey. Our sample consists of 75 Ks-band selected star-forming galaxies from the ZFOURGE survey with stellar masses ranging from log(M$_{\star}$/M$_{\odot}$)$=9.0-11.0$, 28 of which are members of a known overdensity at $z=2.095$. We measure H$\alpha$ emission-line integrated velocity dispersions ($\sigma_{\rm int}$) from 50$-$230 km s$^{-1}$, consistent with other emission-line studies of $z\sim2$ field galaxies. From these data we estimate virial, stellar, and gas masses and derive correlations between these properties for cluster and field galaxies at $z\sim2$. We find evidence that baryons dominate within the central effective radius. However, we find no statistically significant differences between the cluster and the field, and conclude that the kinematics of star-forming galaxies at $z\sim2$ are not significantly different between the cluster and field environments., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL
