The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy using an underground liquid scintillator detector. It is located 53 km away from both Yangjiang and Taishan Nuclear Power Plants in Guangdong, China. The experimental hall, spanning more than 50 meters, is under a granite mountain of over 700 m overburden. Within six years of running, the detection of reactor antineutrinos can resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy at a confidence level of 3-4$\sigma$, and determine neutrino oscillation parameters $\sin^2\theta_{12}$, $\Delta m^2_{21}$, and $|\Delta m^2_{ee}|$ to an accuracy of better than 1%. The JUNO detector can be also used to study terrestrial and extra-terrestrial neutrinos and new physics beyond the Standard Model. The central detector contains 20,000 tons liquid scintillator with an acrylic sphere of 35 m in diameter. $\sim$17,000 508-mm diameter PMTs with high quantum efficiency provide $\sim$75% optical coverage. The current choice of the liquid scintillator is: linear alkyl benzene (LAB) as the solvent, plus PPO as the scintillation fluor and a wavelength-shifter (Bis-MSB). The number of detected photoelectrons per MeV is larger than 1,100 and the energy resolution is expected to be 3% at 1 MeV. The calibration system is designed to deploy multiple sources to cover the entire energy range of reactor antineutrinos, and to achieve a full-volume position coverage inside the detector. The veto system is used for muon detection, muon induced background study and reduction. It consists of a Water Cherenkov detector and a Top Tracker system. Within the framework of the "brick wall model", a novel method is developed to compute the contributions of a scalar field to the thermodynamic quantities of black holes. The relations between (transverse) momenta and frequencies in Rindler space are determined numerically with high accuracy and analytically with an accuracy of better than 10 % and are compared with the corresponding quantities in Minkowski space. In conflict with earlier results, the thermodynamic properties of black holes turn out to be those of a low temperature system. The resulting discrepancy for partition function and entropy by two orders of magnitude is analyzed in detail. In the final part we carry out the analogous studies for scalar fields in de Sitter space and thereby confirm that our method applies also to the important case of spherically symmetric spaces., Comment: Emphasis on the exact numerical and approximate analytical evaluations of the thermodynamic quantities in the brick wall model, the vast conflict with the "standard" approximate procedure and applications beyond Rindler space-time

Techniques to deal with Feshbach resonances are applied to describe resonant light scattering off one dimensional photonic crystal slabs. Accurate expressions for scattering amplitudes, free of any fitting parameter, are obtained for isolated as well as overlapping resonances. They relate the resonance properties to the properties of the optical structure and of the incident light. For the most common case of a piecewise constant dielectric function, the calculations can be carried out essentially analytically. After establishing the accuracy of this approach we demonstrate its potential in the analysis of the reflection coefficients for the diverse shapes of overlapping, interacting resonances., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We analyze the quantum dynamics of the time-dependent elliptical billiard using the example of a certain breathing mode. A numerical method for the time-propagation of an arbitrary initial state is developed, based on a series of transformations thereby removing the time-dependence of the boundary conditions. The time-evolution of the energies of different initial states is studied. The maximal and minimal energy that is reached during the time-evolution shows a series of resonances as a function of the applied driving frequency. At these resonances, higher (or lower) lying states are periodically populated, leading to the observed change in energy. The resonances occur when the driving frequency or a multiple of it matches exactly the mean energetic difference between the two involved states. This picture is confirmed by a few-level Rabi-like model with periodic couplings, reproducing the key results of our numerical study.

Dynamical issues associated with quantum fields in Rindler space are addressed in a study of the interaction between two sources at rest generated by the exchange of scalar particles, photons and gravitons. These static interaction energies in Rindler space are shown to be scale invariant, complex quantities. The imaginary part will be seen to have its quantum mechanical origin in the presence of an infinity of zero modes in uniformly accelerated frames which in turn are related to the radiation observed in inertial frames. The impact of a uniform acceleration on the stability of matter and the properties of particles is discussed and estimates are presented of the instability of hydrogen atoms when approaching the horizon., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures

By superposition of regular gauge instantons or merons, ensembles of gauge fields are constructed which describe the confining phase of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. Various properties of the Wilson loops, the gluon condensate and the topological susceptibility are found to be in qualitative agreement with phenomenology or results of lattice calculations. Limitations in the application to the glueball spectrum and small size Wilson loops are discussed., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We perform the first long-time exploration of the classical dynamics of a driven billiard with a four dimensional phase space. With increasing velocity of the ensemble we observe an evolution from a large chaotic sea with stickiness due to regular islands to thin chaotic channels with diffusive motion leading to Fermi acceleration. As a surprising consequence, we encounter a crossover, which is not parameter induced but rather occurs dynamically, from amplitude dependent tunable subdiffusion to universal normal diffusion in momentum space. Quantized fields in accelerated frames (Rindler spaces) with emphasis on gauge fields are investigated. Important properties of the dynamics in Rindler spaces are shown to follow from the scale invariance of the corresponding Hamiltonians. Origin and consequences of this extraordinary property of Hamiltonians in Rindler spaces are elucidated. Characteristics of the Unruh radiation, the appearance of a photon condensate and the interaction energy of vector and scalar static charges are discussed and implications for Yang-Mills theories and QCD in Rindler spaces are indicated., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

The canonical quantization in Weyl gauge of gauge fields in static space-times is presented. With an appropriate definition of transverse and longitudinal components of gauge fields, the Gauss law constraint is resolved explicitly for scalar and spinor QED and a complete non-perturbative solution is given for the quantized Maxwell-field coupled to external currents. The formalism is applied in investigations of the electromagnetic field in Rindler spaces. The relation of creation and annihilation operators in Minkowski and Rindler spaces is established and initial value problems associated with bremsstrahlung of a uniformly accelerated charge are studied. The peculiar scaling properties of scalar and gauge theories in Rindler spaces are discussed and various quantities such as the photon condensate or the interaction energy of static charges and of scalar sources are computed., Comment: Extended Sec. An effective theory based on ensembles of either regular gauge instantons or merons is shown to produce confinement in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. When the scale is set by the string tension, the action density, topological susceptibility and low-lying glueball spectrum are similar to those arising in lattice QCD. A phenomenological analysis of the distribution of Wilson loops in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory is presented in which Wilson loop distributions are described as the result of a diffusion process on the group manifold. It is shown that, in the absence of forces, diffusion implies Casimir scaling and, conversely, exact Casimir scaling implies free diffusion. Screening processes occur if diffusion takes place in a potential. The crucial distinction between screening of fundamental and adjoint loops is formulated as a symmetry property related to the center symmetry of the underlying gauge theory. In contrast to ensembles of singular gauge instantons, which are well known to fail to produce confinement, it is shown that effective theories based on ensembles of merons or regular gauge instantons do produce confinement. An analysis of spontaneously broken chiral symmetry in light-cone field theory is presented. The non-locality inherent to light-cone field theory requires revision of the standard procedure in the derivation of Ward-Takahashi identities. We derive the general structure of chiral Ward-Takahashi identities and construct them explicitly for various model field theories. Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relations and relations between fermion propagators and the structure functions of Nambu-Goldstone bosons are discussed and the necessary modifications of the Ward-Takahashi identities due to the axial anomaly are indicated., Comment: 13 pages, revtex; v2: minor corrections, 3 references added, to appear in PRD

The Casimir effect is investigated in light-cone quantization. It is shown that for spacelike separation of the walls enclosing the system the standard result for the pressure exerted on the walls is obtained. For walls separated in light-cone space direction no regularization of the quantum fluctuations exists which would yield a finite pressure. The origin of this failure and its implications for other vacuum properties are discussed by analyzing the Casimir effect as seen from a moving observer approaching the speed of light. The possibility for calculation of thermodynamic quantities in light-cone quantization via the Casimir effect is pointed out.

In light-cone quantization, the standard procedure to characterize the phases of a system by appropriate ground state expectation values fails. The light-cone vacuum is determined kinematically. We show that meaningful quantities which can serve as order parameters are obtained as expectation values of Heisenberg operators in the equal (light-cone) time limit. These quantities differ from the purely kinematical expectation values of the corresponding Schroedinger operators. An investigation of the center symmetric phase of SU(2) QCD is presented. The role of the center-symmetry, the dynamics of Polyakov loops and the structure of Abelian monopoles are studied within the axial gauge representation of QCD. Realization of the center symmetry is shown to result from non-perturbative gauge fixing and concomitant confinement like properties emerging even at the perturbative level are displayed. In an analysis of the Polyakov loop dynamics, non-perturbative gauge fixing is also shown to inevitably lead to singular gauge field configurations whose dynamics are briefly discussed., Comment: 14 pages, Latex. An investigation of singular fields emerging in the process of transforming QCD to the axial gauge is presented. The structure of the singularities is analyzed. It is shown that apart from well known neutral magnetic monopole singularities, the field configurations also exhibit singularities in their charged and transverse components. This complex singularity structure guarantees finite non-Abelian field strength and thus finite action if expressed in terms of gauge fixed fields. A relation between the monopole charges of singular field configurations and their topological charge is derived. Qualitative dynamical aspects of the role of the monopoles are discussed. It is argued that the entropy associated with monopoles increases with decreasing temperature and that the coupling to quantum fluctuations favors monopole-antimonopole binding., Comment: 23 pages, RevTeX, no figures; version accepted for publication in Phys. A study of the center symmetric phase of SU(2) Yang Mills theory is presented. Realization of the center symmetry is shown to result from non-perturbative gauge fixing. Dictated by the center symmetry, this phase exhibits already at the perturbative level confinement like properties. The analysis is performed by investigating the dynamics of the Polyakov loops. The ultralocality of these degrees of freedom implies significant changes in the vacuum structure of the theory. General properties of the confined phase and of the transition to the deconfined phase are discussed. Perturbation theory built upon the vacuum of ultralocal Polyakov loops is presented and used to calculate, via the Polyakov loop correlator, the static quark-antiquark potential., Comment: 45 pages, LaTeX, 8 figures

SU(2) Yang-Mills theory at finite extension or, equivalently, at finite temperature is probed by a homogeneous chromomagnetic field. We use a recent modified axial gauge formulation which has the novel feature of respecting the center symmetry in perturbation theory. The characteristic properties of the Z_2-symmetric phase, an extension-dependent mass term and antiperiodic boundary conditions, provide stabilization against magnetic field formation for sufficiently small extension or high temperature. A study of QCD at finite extension is presented and the relation to QCD at finite temperature and in the infinite momentum frame is discussed. The dynamics of Polyakov loops is investigated and shown to be described by functional integrals with finite range of integration. A comparative dynamical study of axial gauge QED and QCD is presented. Elementary excitations associated with particular field configurations are investigated. Gluonic excitations analogous to linearly polarized photons are shown to acquire infinite energy. Suppression of this class of excitations in QCD results from quantization of the chromelectric flux and is interpreted as a dual Meissner effect, i.e. as expulsion from the QCD vacuum of chromo-electric fields which are constant over significant distances. This interpretation is supported by a comparative evaluation of the interaction energy of static charges in the axial gauge representation of QED and QCD., Comment: 22 pages (no figures)

A study of two-dimensional QCD on a spatial circle with Majorana fermions in the adjoint representation of the gauge groups SU(2) and SU(3) has been performed. The main emphasis is put on the symmetry properties related to the homotopically non-trivial gauge transformations and the discrete axial symmetry of this model. Within a gauge fixed canonical framework, the delicate interplay of topology on the one hand and Jacobians and boundary conditions arising in the course of resolving Gauss's law on the other hand is exhibited. As a result, a consistent description of the residual $Z_N$ gauge symmetry (for SU(N)) and the ``axial anomaly" emerges. For illustrative purposes, the vacuum of the model is determined analytically in the limit of a small circle. There, the Born-Oppenheimer approximation is justified and reduces the vacuum problem to simple quantum mechanics.
