Progressive carcinogenesis of a gastric polyp with transformation to gastric adenocarcinoma and subsequent development of leptomeningeal carcinomatosis is described in an adult male Scottish terrier. Presenting clinical signs consisted of vomiting with intermittent hematemesis. Surgical biopsies over the course of 14 months documented the progression from gastric polyp to minimally invasive gastric carcinoma to invasive gastric adenocarcinoma, a pathogenesis not previously documented in veterinary oncology. The patient ultimately developed neurologic pathology and was euthanized, and necropsy evaluation identified widespread carcinomatosis with accompanying leptomeningeal metastasis. As in humans, gastric polyps in dogs rarely have malignant potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Methods of calculating and reporting dose intensity (DI) of CHOP‐based protocols in the veterinary literature vary. The goal of this retrospective study is to examine the prognostic significance of the average percentage of planned DI received in a cohort of canine T‐cell lymphoma patients treated with a modified CHOP protocol with corresponding toxicity and efficacy data. Our data set of 40 dogs was analysed using various previously published methods for calculating DI. Median progression‐free survival and overall survival were 91 and 196 days, respectively. Receiving a higher percentage of planned DI was not found to be associated with patient outcome. Outcomes remain poor for dogs with T‐cell lymphoma treated with CHOP‐based chemotherapy irrespective of received DI. Standard methods of DI calculation and reporting should be adopted in veterinary oncology to enable repeatable and rigorous comparisons of published chemotherapy protocols and to ascertain the potential prognostic relevance of DI in canine lymphoma patients. Background Despite the progress of research and treatment for breast cancer, still up to 30% of the patients afflicted will develop distant disease. Elongation of survival and maintaining the quality of life (QoL) become pivotal issues guiding the treatment decisions. One possible approach to optimise survival and QoL is the use of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) to timely identify acute disease-related burden. We present the protocol of a trial that investigates the effect of real-time PRO data captured with electronic mobile devices on QoL in female breast cancer patients with metastatic disease. Methods This study is a randomised, controlled trial with 1:1 randomisation between two arms. A total of 1000 patients will be recruited in 40 selected breast cancer centres. Patients in the intervention arm receive a weekly request via an app to complete the PRO survey. Symptoms will be assessed by study-specific optimised short forms based on the EORTC QLQ-C30 domains using items from the EORTC CAT item banks. In case of deteriorating PRO scores, an alarm is sent to the treating study centre as well as to the PRO B study office. Following the alarm, the treating breast cancer centre is required to contact the patient to inquire about the reported symptoms and to intervene, if necessary. The intervention is not specified and depends on the clinical need determined by the treating physician. Patients in the control arm are prompted by the app every 3 months to participate in the PRO survey, but their response will not trigger an alarm. The primary outcome is the fatigue level 6 months after enrolment. Secondary endpoints include among others hospitalisations, use of rescue services and overall QoL. Discussion Within the PRO B intervention group, we expect lower fatigue levels 6 months after intervention start, higher levels of QoL, less unplanned hospitalisations and less emergency room visits compared to controls. In case of positive results, our approach would allow a fast and easy transfer into clinical practice due to the use of the already nationwide existing IT infrastructure of the German Cancer Society and the independent certification institute OnkoZert. The present work has been prepared within the framework of the European project ERUDESP and a bioelectrochemical flow-cell was designed for an enantiopure bioelectrosynthesis. Cell design, mediator screening and development of various electroorganic and electroenzymatic reactions in a batch-cell were performed. The ultimate goal was upscaling of (bio)electrochemical reactions in the flow-cell. The synthesis of three-dimensional macroporous electrodes was carried out by using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique and the controlled evaporation method with subsequent electrodeposition of metals andmetal oxides . Electrodeposition was done into the interstices of the previously prepared colloidal crystal of monodisperse polystyrene particles followed by particle dissolution. The porous materials possess very good open porous interconnectivity and a significantly larger active surface area. Porous ruthenium oxide electrodes with significantly improved overvoltage for direct oxidation of NADH were developed. Based on the ERUDESP project, a renewable macroporous electrode system was established. In addition, macroporous ruthenium oxide microelectrodes for pH measurements with improved thermal noise and macroporous microelectrodes for the application as implants in hand prosthesis were built. Furthermore, macroporous multicatalyst layers were developed for in-situ hydrogen generation with simultaneous hydrogenation reaction. As a further controlled surface patterning, nanoscale platinum islands with subsequent biofunctionalization were made, which showed a significant enhancement of current density.

This study explored the impact of feeding raw meat to dogs on the fecal prevalence of several enteric bacterial zoonotic pathogens. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated from 1/42 (2.6%) raw meat-fed dogs. Salmonella enterica was isolated from 2/40 (5%) of the raw meat feeds, 6/42 (14%) raw meat-fed dog feces, none of the dogs that did not receive raw meat (P = 0.001), 4/38 (10.5%) of the vacuum cleaner waste samples from households where raw meat was fed, and 2/44 (4.5%) of vacuum cleaner waste samples from households where raw meat was not fed to dogs (P = 0.41). Responses to a questionnaire probing practices and beliefs regarding raw meat feeding that was administered to dog owners demonstrated that dog owners may either not be aware or refuse to acknowledge the risks associated with raw meat-feeding; thus, they may neglect to conduct adequate intervention strategies to prevent zoonoses among themselves and their families.

41. Platinum Islands on SAMs as Template for Enzyme-Catalyzed Glucose Oxidation

- Abstract
Multilayer electrodes for highly enantioselective sugar conversion are obtained by using monoatomically high platinum islands as pattern for further electrode modification with pyranose-2-oxidase (P2Ox). We describe this kind of electrode for the glucose oxidation. The reaction is monitored via the H2O2 production by the enzyme as side product. As first layer, a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) is arranged on the Au(111) surface via dip coating in a solution of 4-mercaptopyridine. On top of the SAM, a controlled distribution of platinum islands is obtained by a combination of electroless and electrochemical deposition using a solution of K2PtCl4. The platinum islands have a diameter of about 6 nm. Thereon, poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAA) obtained by dip coating provides a linker for immobilization of the enzyme pyranose-2-oxidase. Our assumption is that only one enzyme molecule is bound to one platinum island. This well ordered surface structure is probably the reason for the very high conversion efficiency.

- Abstract
In the present work, macroporous ruthenium oxide electrodes are prepared using two template techniques, on the one hand the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique and on the other hand the controlled evaporation (CE) method. In both cases, electrochemical deposition of ruthenium and ruthenium oxide is carried out on polystyrene endo-templates. With the Langmuir-Blodgett technique the number of polystyrene layers can be controlled, and with the CE method a highly networked porous structure is obtained. The CE method and the LB approach provide techniques for producing very high porosities on electrode surfaces. The large surface area due to this porous structure leads to good electrocatalytic activity. The porous ruthenium oxide was tested for pH sensing and for activation of direct NADH oxidation. Furthermore, the porous electrode was miniaturized to microelectrodes.

- Abstract
A supplemental cysteine-tag modification of the enzyme galactitol dehydrogenase (GatDH), expressed in Escherichia coli has enabled a directed and covalent immobilisation of the protein on gold surfaces without secondary linkers. The successful enzyme immobilisation was verified by SPR measurements, and the activity of the immobilized GatDH was demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) while NAD+ and the redox mediator 4-carboxy-2,5,7-trinitrofluorenyliden-malonnitrile (CTFM) were both kept in solution. The results represent a proof of concept for the development of electrochemical reactors for the generation of enantiopure fine chemicals as building blocks for pharmaceutical products.

- Abstract
Conflicting opinions about the effectiveness of H. pakistanae as a biological control agent for hydrilla prompt researchers to find a method for assessing the fly's success. Developing a physiological age-grading system for the fly using ovarian morphology to detect changes in reproductive activity is useful for evaluating reproductive status of the fly in field populations. Changes in the appearance of follicular relics in ovaries with oviposition provide a reliable method to estimate fecundity. Characteristics of follicular relics were used to develop a system with eight physiological age classes, three nulliparous and five parous. Changes that occur in the fat body were used to assist in classification of nulliparous females or those with low egg counts.

The study of moral judgements often centres on moral dilemmas in which options consistent with deontological perspectives (that is, emphasizing rules, individual rights and duties) are in conflict with options consistent with utilitarian judgements (that is, following the greater good based on consequences). Greene et al. (2009) showed that psychological and situational factors (for example, the intent of the agent or the presence of physical contact between the agent and the victim) can play an important role in moral dilemma judgements (for example, the trolley problem). Our knowledge is limited concerning both the universality of these effects outside the United States and the impact of culture on the situational and psychological factors affecting moral judgements. Thus, we empirically tested the universality of the effects of intent and personal force on moral dilemma judgements by replicating the experiments of Greene et al. in 45 countries from all inhabited continents. We found that personal force and its interaction with intention exert influence on moral judgements in the US and Western cultural clusters, replicating and expanding the original findings. Moreover, the personal force effect was present in all cultural clusters, suggesting it is culturally universal. The evidence for the cultural universality of the interaction effect was inconclusive in the Eastern and Southern cultural clusters (depending on exclusion criteria). We found no strong association between collectivism/individualism and moral dilemma judgements. Including participants from 45 countries, Bago et al. find that the situational factors that affect moral reasoning are shared across countries, with diminished observed cultural variation., Comunidad de Madrid [2016-T1/SOC-1395, 2020-5A/SOC-19723]; AEI [PSI2017-85159-P]; UE/FEDER; National Science Centre, Poland [2017/01/X/HS6/01332, 2015/19/D/HS6/00641, 2019/35/B/HS6/00528]; Aarhus University Research Foundation (AUFF) [AUFF-E-2019-9-4]; ANR [ANR-17-EURE-0010]; ANR Labex IAST; Australian Research Council [DP180102384]; CAPES [88887.364180/2019-00]; Carlsberg Foundation [CF16-0444]; Independent Research Fund Denmark [7024-00057B]; Germany's Excellence Strategy [EXC 2126/1-390838866]; FONDECYT, CONICYT [11190980]; German Research Foundation [FOR-2150, LA 3566/1-2]; JSPS [18K03010]; JSPS KAKENHI [16H03079, 17H00875, 18K12015, 20H04581, 17H06342, 20K03479, 20KK0054, 20J21976]; Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) [31530032]; Key Technological Projects of Guangdong Province [2018B030335001]; National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship [DGE-1839285]; Polish National Science Center; DFG Beethoven [2016/23/G/HS6/01775]; Portuguese National Foundation for Science and Technology [SFRH/BD/126304/2016, UID/PSI/03125/2019]; PRIN 2017 (Italian Ministry of Education and Research) [20178293XT]; PSA 006 BRA 008 Data Collection in Support of PSADM 001 Measurement Invariance Project; Foundation for Polish Science (START); National Science Centre [2020/36/T/HS6/00256, 2019/33/N/HS6/00054]; Slovak Research and Development Agency [APVV-18-0140, APVV-17-0418, PRIMUS/20/HUM/009, APVV-17-0596]; Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada [950-224884]; Swedish Research Council [2016-06793]; Project of Philosophy and Social Science Research in Colleges and Universities in Jiangsu Province [2020SJA0017], M.A. Vadillo was supported by 2016-T1/SOC-1395 and 2020-5A/SOC-19723 from Comunidad de Madrid, PSI2017-85159-P from AEI and UE/FEDER.
