Across disciplines, researchers increasingly recognize that open science and reproducible research practices may accelerate scientific progress by allowing others to reuse research outputs and by promoting rigorous research that is more likely to yield trustworthy results. While initiatives, training programs, and funder policies encourage researchers to adopt reproducible research and open science practices, these practices are uncommon in many fields. Researchers need training to integrate these practices into their daily work. We organized a virtual brainstorming event, in collaboration with the German Reproducibility Network, to discuss strategies for making reproducible research and open science training the norm at research institutions. Here, we outline eleven strategies, concentrated in three areas: (1) offering training, (2) adapting research assessment criteria and program requirements, and (3) building communities. We provide a brief overview of each strategy, offer tips for implementation, and provide links to resources. Our goal is to encourage members of the research community to think creatively about the many ways they can contribute and collaborate to build communities, and make reproducible research and open science training the norm. Researchers may act in their roles as scientists, supervisors, mentors, instructors, and members of curriculum, hiring or evaluation committees. Institutional leadership and research administration and support staff can accelerate progress by implementing change across their institutions.

Eating less meat would benefit environmental sustainability, human health, and animal welfare. Providing information about this, however, does often not lead people to adopt according beliefs, attitudes or behaviors. In fact, dietary changes are often prevented by dissonance reduction (i.e. moral disengagement) if information elicits a conflict regarding meat. In the present investigation we thus aimed to address moral disengagement via a communication strategy that consisted of two stages: In Stage I, we presented information by showing distressing scenes from animal agriculture. In Stage II, we then counteracted moral disengagement in a dialog. Two studies indicate that, following the dialog, people’s evaluations of meat changed and their willingness to eat meat decreased; this seemed to result from lowered moral disengagement. By providing an empirically tested communication strategy for addressing moral disengagement on the exemplary conflict regarding meat, we hope to inspire research and interventions that intend to communicate (environmental) issues.

N-Heteropolycyclic compounds are promising organic n-channel semiconductors for applications in field effect transistors. The adsorption behavior of these molecules on inorganic substrates is of great interest, since it affects the transport properties. Utilizing high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and density functional theory (DFT), we determined the adsorption geometry of three different N-heteropolycyclic molecules as a function of coverage on Au(111). All three π-conjugated aromatic molecules adopt a planar geometry with respect to the substrate in both the monolayer (ML) and thin films (up to 10 ML). Contrary, in their crystal structure the molecules are tilted up to 82° between the molecular planes in neighboring stacks. A detailed study on the effects of core halogenation of tetraazaperopyrene (TAPP) derivatives is presented. Its impact on the solid structure, as well as the photophysical and electrochemical properties, has been probed by the means of X-ray crystallography, UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and DFT modeling. The aim was to assess the potential of this approach as a construction principle for organic electron-conducting materials of the type studied in this work. Although halogenation leads to a stabilization of the LUMOs compared to the unsubstituted parent compound, the nature of the halide barely affects the LUMO energy while strongly influencing the HOMO energies. In terms of band-gap engineering, it was demonstrated that the HOMO-LUMO gap is decreased by substitution of the TAPP core with halides, the effect being found to be most pronounced for the iodinated derivative. The performance of the recently reported core-fluorinated and core-iodinated TAPP derivatives in organic thin-film transistors (TFTs) was investigated on both a glass substrate, as well as on a flexible plastic substrate (PEN). Field-effect mobilities of up to 0.17 cm(2) Vs(-1) and on/off current ratio of >10(6) were established.

Tetraazaperopyrenes (TAPPs) have been functionalized with thiophene and terthiophene units of different architecture resulting in a variety of organic donor-acceptor (D-A) compounds. The influence of the connection of the thiophenes to the TAPP core on their structural, photophysical and electrochemical properties has been studied in detail by a combination of X-ray crystallography, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as cyclic voltammetry, which allowed the establishment of structure-property relationships. The HOMO-LUMO gap is significantly decreased upon substitution of the TAPP core with electron-donating thiophene units, the extent of which is strongly influenced by the orientation of the thiophene units. The latter also crucially directs the molecular packing in the solid. Linkage at the α-position allows both inter- and intramolecular N···S interaction, whereas linkage in the β-position prevents intramolecular N···S interaction, resulting in a less pronounced conjugation of the TAPP core and the thiophene units. The new TAPP derivatives were processed as semiconductors in organic thin-film transistors (TFTs) that show ambipolar behavior. The insight into band gap and structure engineering may open up new possibilities to tailor the electronic properties of TAPP-based materials for certain desired applications.

Melanoma is one of the most aggressive tumors with a very low survival rate once metastasized. The incidence of newly detected cases increases every year suggesting the necessity of development and application of innovative treatment strategies. Human melanoma develops from melanocytes localized in the epidermis of the skin to malignant tumors because of deregulated effectors influencing several molecular pathways. Despite many advances in describing the molecular changes accompanying melanoma formation, many critical and clinically relevant molecular features of the transformed pigment cells and the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. To contribute to a better understanding of the molecular processes of melanoma formation, we use a transgenic medaka melanoma model that is well suited for the investigation of melanoma tumor development because fish and human melanocytes are both localized in the epidermis. The purpose of our study was to gain insights into melanoma development from the first steps of tumor formation up to melanoma progression and to identify gene expression patterns that will be useful for monitoring treatment effects in drug screening approaches. Comparing transcriptomes from juvenile fish at the tumor initiating stage with nevi and advanced melanoma of adults, we identified stage specific expression signatures and pathways that are characteristic for the development of medaka melanoma, and are also found in human malignancies.

Polyheterocyclic aromatic compounds combining the electron-poor 1,3,6,8-tetraazapyrene (TAPy) unit with electron-rich heterocycles are reported. They were obtained as side-products from the reaction of the tin “double salt” of tetraaminonaphthalene hydrochloride with trifluoroacetic anhydride in pyridine. Apart from the target product, 2,7-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3,6,8-tetraazapyrene (1), several novel heteroaromatics were obtained resulting from the annulation of a furan (2) or indolizine unit (3) to the TAPy core. Upon recrystallization from methanol, methanol added to compound 2 to yield the racemate of the homochiral diastereomer [(R,R)- and (S,S)-2a]. Compound 3 is strongly fluorescent (φ = 0.68 in toluene) and the emission spectra display a significant bathochromic shift with increasing solvent polarity. The HOMO of 3 is located on the indolizine part of the molecule, whereas the LUMO primarily resides on the tetraazapyrene unit, which suggests considerable intramolecular charge transfer in the corresponding π*π transition.

A new synthetic approach to core-functionalized tetraazaperopyrenes (TAPP) is reported. In-situ reaction of 4-fold lithiated TAPP with electrophiles results in the formation of various unprecedented TAPP derivatives, which are highly emissive fluorophores, show promising photophysical and electrochemical properties and act as valuable starting materials. Thus, lithiation of the TAPP core opens up a facile way for developing new organic materials.

Water-soluble tetraazaperopyrene (TAPP) derivatives have been synthesized, which show both high photostability and high fluorescence quantum yields (>80%) in water. Furthermore delivery of the dye into cells demonstrated selective staining of the nucleus.
