We examine the quiescent fractions of massive galaxies in six $z\gtrsim3$ spectroscopically-confirmed protoclusters in the COSMOS field, one of which is newly confirmed and presented here. We report the spectroscopic confirmation of MAGAZ3NE~J100143+023021 at $z=3.122^{+0.007}_{-0.004}$ by the Massive Ancient Galaxies At $z>3$ NEar-infrared (MAGAZ3NE) survey. MAGAZ3NE~J100143+023021 contains a total of 79 protocluster members (28 spectroscopic and 51 photometric). Three spectroscopically-confirmed members are star-forming ultra-massive galaxies ($\log(M_{\star}/{\rm M}_\odot)>11$; UMGs), the most massive of which has $\log(M_{\star}/{\rm M}_\odot)=11.15^{+0.05}_{-0.06}$. Combining Keck/MOSFIRE spectroscopy and the COSMOS2020 photometric catalog, we use a weighted Gaussian kernel density estimator to map the protocluster and measure its total mass $2.25^{+1.55}_{-0.65}\times10^{14}~{\rm M}_{\odot}$ in the dense ``core'' region. For each of the six COSMOS protoclusters, we compare the quiescent fraction to the status of the central UMG as star-forming or quiescent. We observe that galaxies in these protoclusters appear to obey galactic conformity: elevated quiescent fractions are found in protoclusters with $UVJ$ quiescent UMGs and low quiescent fractions are found in protoclusters containing $UVJ$ star-forming UMGs. This correlation of star-formation/quiescence in UMGs and the massive galaxies nearby in these protoclusters is the first evidence for the existence of galactic conformity at $z>3$. Despite disagreements over mechanisms behind conformity at low redshifts, its presence at these early cosmic times would provide strong constraints on the physics proposed to drive galactic conformity., Comment: 6 figures, 5 tables. Minimoons are asteroids that become temporarily captured by the Earth-Moon system. We present the discovery of 2024 PT$_5$, a minimoon discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) Sutherland telescope on 2024 August 7. The minimoon with heliocentric semi-major axis, $a$$\sim$1.01 au, and perihelion, $q$$\sim$0.99 au, became captured by the Earth-Moon system on 2024 September 29 and left on 2024 November 25 UTC. Visible g, r, i, and Z spectrophotometry was obtained using Gemini North/Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on 2024 September 27. The color indices are g-r = 0.58$\pm$0.04, r-i = 0.29$\pm$0.04, i-Z = -0.27$\pm$0.06, and the spectrum best matches lunar rock samples followed by S-complex asteroids. Assuming an albedo of 0.21 and using our measured absolute magnitude of 28.64$\pm$0.04, 2024 PT$_5$ has a diameter of 5.4$\pm$1.2 m. We also detect variations in the lightcurve of 2024 PT$_5$ with a 0.28$\pm$0.07 magnitude amplitude and a double-peaked period of $\sim$2600$\pm$500 s. We improve the orbital solution of 2024 PT$_5$ with our astrometry and estimate the effect of radiation pressure on its deriving an area-to-mass ratio of 7.02$\pm$2.05$\times$10$^{-5}$ m$^2$/kg, implying a density of $\sim$3.9$\pm$2.1 g/cm$^3$, compatible with having a rocky composition. The Charting Cluster Construction with VUDS and ORELSE (C3VO) survey is an ongoing imaging and spectroscopic campaign aiming to map out the growth of structure up to $z\sim5$ and was born from the combination of the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS) and the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large-Scale Environments (ORELSE) survey. As we previously accomplished with the ORELSE survey, we apply our technique known as Voronoi tessellation Monte-Carlo (VMC) mapping to search for serendipitous galaxy overdensities at $2 14$. In the C3VO fields, we were able to recover many of the previously known structures in the literature as well as find hundreds of new overdensity candidates, once again demonstrating the powerful capabilities of VMC mapping when applied to wide-field optical and infrared galaxy evolution surveys at ever higher redshifts., Comment: 36 pages, 16 figures, 5 tables, submitted to ApJ

We conduct a study on the relationship between galaxy environments and their active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity at high redshifts ($2.010^{12.8}M_\odot$) overdense ($\sigma_\delta>5.0$) peak, normalized with respect to the size of the peak. We present an analysis of the number density of galaxies as a function of stellar mass (i.e., the stellar mass function, SMF) in the COSMOS field at z~3.3, making a comparison between the SMF in overdense environments and the SMF in the coeval field. In particular, this region contains the Elent\'ari proto-supercluster, a system of 6 extended overdensities spanning ~70 cMpc on a side. A clear difference is seen in the high-mass slope of these SMFs, with overdense regions showing an increase in the ratio of high-mass galaxies to low-mass galaxies relative to the field, indicating a more rapid build-up of stellar mass in overdense environments. This result qualitatively agrees with analyses of clusters at z~1, though the differences between protocluster and field SMFs at z~3.3 are smaller. While this is consistent with overdensities enhancing the evolution of their member galaxies, potentially through increased merger rates, whether this enhancement begins in protocluster environments or even earlier in group environments is still unclear. Though the measured fractions of quiescent galaxies between the field and overdense environments do not vary significantly, implying that this stellar mass enhancement is ongoing and any starbursts triggered by merger activity have not yet quenched, we note that spectroscopic observations are biased towards star-forming populations, particularly for low-mass galaxies. If mergers are indeed responsible, high resolution imaging of Elent\'ari and similar structures at these early epochs should then reveal increased merger rates relative to the field. Recent James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations have revealed a surprisingly abundant population of faint, dusty active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z~4-7. Together with the presence of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at z>6, this raises questions about the formation and growth histories of early black holes. Current theories for the formation of seed black holes from the death of the first stars (i.e. light seeds) and/or the direct collapse of primordial gas clouds (i.e. heavy seeds) still lack observational confirmation. Here, we present LID-568, a low-mass (7.2e6Msun) black hole hosting powerful outflows that is observed in an extreme phase of rapid growth at z~4. This object is similar to other JWST-discovered faint AGN populations, but is bright in X-ray emission and accreting at more than 4000% of the limit at which radiation pressure exceeds the force of gravitational attraction of the black hole (i.e. super-Eddington accretion). Analysis of JWST NIRSpec/IFU data reveals spatially extended Ha emission with velocities of ~ -600 - -500 km/s relative to the central black hole, indicative of robust nuclear-driven outflows. LID-568 represents an elusive low-mass black hole experiencing super-Eddington accretion as invoked by models of early black hole formation. We present a study on stellar properties of Lyman-alpha (Ly$\alpha$) emitters at 5 $< z <$ 8.2. We use 247 photometrically-selected, lensed, high-redshift, low luminosity galaxy candidates with spectroscopic follow-up. Of these, 38 are confirmed spectroscopically to be between 5 $< z <$ 8.2 via detection of Ly$\alpha$. For each galaxy and candidate, we estimate stellar mass, star formation rate, specific star formation rate, and mass-weighted age with spectral energy distribution fitting. We also measure the UV $\beta$ slope and luminosity using values from photometry. We find no strong correlation between Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width and any of these properties, as well as no significant difference between the physical properties of Ly$\alpha$ emitters and candidates without Ly$\alpha$ detected. This lack of expected trends may be explained by a combination of the evolving opacity of the IGM at these redshifts as well as the unique phase space probed by our lensed sample. Via tests on other galaxy samples which show varying strengths of correlations, we conclude that if there exist any relationships between Ly$\alpha$ EW and physical properties in the underlying population of faint galaxies, they are weak correlations. Galaxy morphology is shaped by stellar activity, feedback, gas and dust properties, and interactions with surroundings, and can therefore provide insight into these processes. In this paper, we study the spatial offsets between stellar and interstellar medium emission in a sample of 54 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at $z\sim4-6$ observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and drawn from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate C$^+$ at Early times (ALPINE). We find no significant spatial offset for the majority ($\sim$ 70 percent) of galaxies in the sample among any combination of [C II], far-infrared continuum, optical, and ultraviolet emission. However, a fraction of the sample ($\sim$ 30 percent) shows offsets larger than the median by more than 3$\sigma$ significance (compared to the uncertainty on the offsets), especially between [C II] and ultraviolet emission. We find that these significant offsets are of the order of $\sim$0.5-0.7 arcsec, corresponding to $\sim$3.5-4.5 kiloparsecs. The offsets could be caused by a complex dust geometry, strong feedback from stars and active galactic nuclei, large-scale gas inflow and outflow, or a combination of these phenomena. However, our current analysis does not definitively constrain the origin. Future, higher resolution ALMA and JWST observations may help resolve the ambiguity. Regardless, since there exist at least some galaxies that display such large offsets, galaxy models and spectral energy distribution fitting codes cannot assume co-spatial emission in all main-sequence galaxies, and must take into account that the observed emission across wavelengths may be spatially segregated., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. Simulations predict that the galaxy populations inhabiting protoclusters may contribute considerably to the total amount of stellar mass growth of galaxies in the early universe. In this study, we test these predictions observationally, focusing on the Taralay protocluster (formerly PCl J1001+0220) at $z \sim 4.57$ in the COSMOS field. Leveraging data from the Charting Cluster Construction with VUDS and ORELSE (C3VO) survey, we spectroscopically confirmed 44 galaxies within the adopted redshift range of the protocluster ($4.48 < z < 4.64$) and incorporate an additional 18 such galaxies from ancillary spectroscopic surveys. Using a density mapping technique, we estimate the total mass of Taralay to be $\sim 1.7 \times 10^{15}$ M$_\odot$, sufficient to form a massive cluster by the present day. By comparing the star formation rate density (SFRD) within the protocluster (SFRD$_\text{pc}$) to that of the coeval field (SFRD$_\text{field}$), we find that SFRD$_\text{pc}$ surpasses the SFRD$_\text{field}$ by $\Delta$log(SFRD/$M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$) = $1.08 \pm 0.32$ (or $\sim$ 12$\times$). The observed contribution fraction of protoclusters to the cosmic SFRD adopting Taralay as a proxy for typical protoclusters is $33.5\%^{+8.0\%}_{-4.3\%}$, a value $\sim$2$\sigma$ in excess of the predictions from simulations. Taralay contains three peaks that are $5\sigma$ above the average density at these redshifts. Their SFRD is $\sim$0.5 dex higher than the value derived for the overall protocluster. We show that 68% of all star formation in the protocluster takes place within these peaks, and that the innermost regions of the peaks encase $\sim 50\%$ of the total star formation in the protocluster. This study strongly suggests that protoclusters drive stellar mass growth in the early universe and that this growth may proceed in an inside-out manner., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures, 10 tables

The connection between galaxies and dark matter halos is often quantified using the stellar mass-halo mass (SMHM) relation. Optical and near-infrared imaging surveys have led to a broadly consistent picture of the evolving SMHM relation based on measurements of galaxy abundances and angular correlation functions. Spectroscopic surveys at $z \gtrsim 2$ can also constrain the SMHM relation via the galaxy autocorrelation function and through the cross-correlation between galaxies and Ly$\alpha$ absorption measured in transverse sightlines; however, such studies are very few and have produced some unexpected or inconclusive results. We use $\sim$3000 spectra of $z\sim2.5$ galaxies from the Lyman-alpha Tomography IMACS Survey (LATIS) to measure the galaxy-galaxy and galaxy-Ly$\alpha$ correlation functions in four bins of stellar mass spanning $10^{9.2} \lesssim M_* / M_{\odot} \lesssim 10^{10.5}$. Parallel analyses of the MultiDark N-body and ASTRID hydrodynamic cosmological simulations allow us to model the correlation functions, estimate covariance matrices, and infer halo masses. We find that results of the two methods are mutually consistent and are broadly in accord with standard SMHM relations. This consistency demonstrates that we are able to accurately measure and model Ly$\alpha$ transmission fluctuations $\delta_F$ in LATIS. We also show that the galaxy-Ly$\alpha$ cross-correlation, a free byproduct of optical spectroscopic galaxy surveys at these redshifts, can constrain halo masses with similar precision to galaxy-galaxy clustering., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We report on a $\rm{[CII]}_{158\mu\rm{m}}$ search using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) on three lensed, confirmed {\lya} emitting galaxies at $z \sim 7$. Our targets are ultra-violet (UV) faint systems with stellar masses on the order of $M_{*} \sim 10^{9} M_{\odot}$. We detect a single [CII] line emission ($4\sigma$) from the brightest ($L \sim 2.4 \times 10^{10}L_{\odot}$) galaxy in our sample, MACS0454-1251. We determine a systemic redshift ($z_{\rm{[CII]}} = 6.3151 \pm 0.0005$) for MACS0454-1251 and measure a {\lya} velocity offset of $\Delta v \approx 300 \pm 70 \rm{km\,s}^{-1}$. The remaining two galaxies we detect no {\ct} but provide $3 \sigma$ upper limits on their {\ct} line luminosities which we use to investigate the $L_{\textrm{[CII]}} - \rm{SFR}$ relation. Overall our single {\ct} detection shows agreement with the relation for dwarf and local starburst galaxies. Our [CII] deficient galaxies could potentially be exhibiting low metallicities ($Z

Motivated by spectroscopic confirmation of three overdense regions in the COSMOS field at $z\sim3.35$, we analyze the uniquely deep multi-wavelength photometry and extensive spectroscopy available in the field to identify any further related structure. We construct a three dimensional density map using the Voronoi tesselation Monte Carlo method and find additional regions of significant overdensity. Here we present and examine a set of six overdense structures at $3.205\sigma$ overdensity separated by up to 70 cMpc, suggestive of a proto-supercluster similar to the Hyperion system at $z\sim2.45$. We report the discovery of a triply imaged active galactic nucleus (AGN), lensed by the galaxy cluster MACS J0035.4-2015 ($z_{\mathrm{d}}=0.352$). The object is detected in Hubble Space Telescope imaging taken for the RELICS program. It appears to have a quasi-stellar nucleus consistent with a point-source, with a de-magnified radius of $r_e\lesssim100$ pc. The object is spectroscopically confirmed to be an AGN at $z_{\mathrm{spec}}=2.063\pm0.005$ showing broad rest-frame UV emission lines, and is detected in both X-ray observations with Chandra and in ALCS ALMA band 6 (1.2 mm) imaging. It has a relatively faint rest-frame UV luminosity for a quasar-like object, $M_{\mathrm{UV},1450}=-19.7\pm0.2$. The object adds to just a few quasars or other X-ray sources known to be multiply lensed by a galaxy cluster. Some diffuse emission from the host galaxy is faintly seen around the nucleus and there is a faint object nearby sharing the same multiple-imaging symmetry and geometric redshift, possibly an interacting galaxy or a star-forming knot in the host. We present an accompanying lens model, calculate the magnifications and time delays, and infer physical properties for the source. We find the rest-frame UV continuum and emission lines to be dominated by the AGN, and the optical emission to be dominated by the host galaxy of modest stellar mass $M_{\star}\simeq10^{9.2} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. We also observe some variation in the AGN emission with time, which may suggest that the AGN used to be more active. This object adds a low-redshift counterpart to several relatively faint AGN recently uncovered at high redshifts with HST and JWST., Comment: Published in MNRAS. Observational studies have widely demonstrated that galaxy physical properties are strongly affected by the surrounding environment. On one side, gas inflows provide galaxies with new fuel for star formation. On the other side, the high temperatures and densities of the medium are expected to induce quenching in the star formation. Observations of large structures, in particular filaments at the cluster outskirts (r>2r$_{200}$), are currently limited to the low redshift Universe. We present a multi-band dataset for the cluster MACS J0416.1-2403 (z=0.397), observed in the context of the Galaxy Assembly as a function of Mass and Environment with VST (VST-GAME) survey. The project aims at gathering deep ($r$<24.4) and wide (20x20Mpc$^2$) observations at optical wavelengths for six massive galaxy clusters at 0.2

Observations and simulations of interacting galaxies and mergers in the local universe have shown that interactions can significantly enhance the star formation rates (SFR) and fueling of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). However, at higher redshift, some simulations suggest that the level of star formation enhancement induced by interactions is lower due to the higher gas fractions and already increased SFRs in these galaxies. We present the radio properties of 66 spectroscopically-confirmed normal star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at $4.4

Galaxy protoclusters, which will eventually grow into the massive clusters we see in the local universe, are usually traced by locating overdensities of galaxies. Large spectroscopic surveys of distant galaxies now exist, but their sensitivity depends mainly on a galaxy's star formation activity and dust content rather than its mass. Tracers of massive protoclusters that do not rely on their galaxy constituents are therefore needed. Here we report observations of Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption in the spectra of a dense grid of background galaxies, which we use to locate a substantial number of candidate protoclusters at redshifts 2.2-2.8 via their intergalactic gas. We find that the structures producing the most absorption, most of which were previously unknown, contain surprisingly few galaxies compared to the dark matter content of their analogs in cosmological simulations. Nearly all are expected to be protoclusters, and we infer that half of their expected galaxy members are missing from our survey because they are unusually dim at rest-frame ultraviolet wavelengths. We attribute this to an unexpectedly strong and early influence of the protocluster environment on the evolution of these galaxies that reduced their star formation or increased their dust content., Comment: Published in Nature. Cosmological simulations are crucial tools in studying the Universe, but they typically do not directly match real observed structures. Constrained cosmological simulations, on the other hand, are designed to match the observed distribution of galaxies. Here we present constrained simulations based on spectroscopic surveys at a redshift of z~2.3, corresponding to an epoch of nearly 11 Gyrs ago. This allows us to 'fast-forward' the simulation to our present-day and study the evolution of observed cosmic structures self-consistently. We confirm that several previously-reported protoclusters will evolve into massive galaxy clusters by our present epoch, including the 'Hyperion' structure that we predict will collapse into a giant filamentary supercluster spanning 100 Megaparsecs. We also discover previously unknown protoclusters, with lower final masses than typically detectable by other methods, that nearly double the number of known protoclusters within this volume. We report the discovery of a double-peaked Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) emitter (LAE) at $z=3.2177\pm0.0001$ in VLT/MUSE data. The galaxy is strongly lensed by the galaxy cluster RXC~J0018.5+1626 recently observed in the RELICS survey, and the double-peaked Ly$\alpha$ emission is clearly detected in the two counter images in the MUSE field-of-view. We measure a relatively high Ly$\alpha$ rest-frame equivalent width (EW) of $\mathrm{EW}_{\mathrm{Ly}\alpha,0}=(63\pm2)\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$. Additional near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy allows us to measure the H$\beta$, [OIII]$\lambda4959\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$ and [OIII]$\lambda5007\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$ emission lines, which show moderate rest-frame EWs of the order of a few $\sim10-100\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$, an [OIII]$\lambda5007\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$/H$\beta$ ratio of $4.8\pm0.7$, and a lower limit on the [OIII]/[OII] ratio of $>5.6$. The galaxy has very blue UV-continuum slopes of $\beta_{\mathrm{FUV}}=-2.23\pm0.06$ and $\beta_{\mathrm{NUV}}=-3.0\pm0.2$, and is magnified by factors $\mu\sim7-10$ in each of the two images, thus enabling a view into a low-mass ($M_{\star}\simeq10^{7.5}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) high-redshift galaxy analog. Notably, the blue peak of the Ly$\alpha$ profile is significantly stronger than the red peak, which suggests an inflow of matter and possibly very low HI column densities in its circumgalactic gas. Combined with the high lensing magnification and image multiplicity, these properties make this galaxy a prime candidate for follow-up observations to search for LyC emission and constrain the LyC photon escape fraction., Comment: Updated to match published version

We present a Bayesian inference on the neutral hydrogen fraction of the intergalactic medium (IGM), $x_{\textrm{HI}}$, at $z \sim$ 6-8 using the properties of Lyman break galaxies during the Epoch of Reionization. We use large samples of LBG candidates at $5.5 \leq z \leq 8.2$ with spectroscopy from Keck/DEIMOS and Keck/MOSFIRE. For each galaxy, we incorporate either the Lyman-$\alpha$ equivalent width (EW) for detections or the EW limit spectrum for nondetections to parameterize the EW distribution at various ultraviolet brightnesses for a given redshift. Using our reference sample of galaxy candidates from the ionized universe at $z$ $\sim$ 6.0, we are able to infer $x_{\textrm{HI}}$ at two redshifts: $z$ $\sim$ 6.7 and $z$ $\sim$ 7.6. This work includes intrinsically faint, gravitationally lensed galaxies at $z$ $\sim$ 6.0 in order to constrain the intrinsic faint-end Ly$\alpha$ EW distribution and provide a comparable population of galaxies to counterparts in our sample that are at higher redshift. The inclusion of faint galaxy candidates, in addition to a more sophisticated modelling framework, allows us to better isolate effects of the interstellar medium and circumgalactic medium on the observed Lyman-$\alpha$ distribution from those of the IGM. We infer an upper limit of $x_{\textrm{HI}}$ $\leq$ 0.25 at $z$ = 6.7 $\pm$ 0.2 and a neutral fraction of $x_{\textrm{HI}}$ = $0.83^{+0.08}_{-0.11}$ at $z$ = 7.6$\pm$ 0.6, both within 1$\sigma$ uncertainty, results which favor a moderately late and rapid reionization., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We present size measurements of 78 high-redshift ($z\geq 5.5$) galaxy candidates from the Reionisation Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS). These distant galaxies are well-resolved due to the gravitational lensing power of foreground galaxy clusters, imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Spitzer Space Telescope. We compute sizes using the forward-modeling code Lenstruction and account for magnification using public lens models. The resulting size-magnitude measurements confirm the existence of many small galaxies with effective radii $R_{\rm{eff}}<200$ pc in the early universe, in agreement with previous studies. In addition, we highlight compact and highly star-forming sources with star formation rate surface densities $\Sigma_\text{SFR}>10M_\odot\text{yr}^{-1}\text{kpc}^{-2}$ as possible Lyman continuum leaking candidates that could be major contributors to the process of reionisation. We present the second data release of the COSMOS Lyman-Alpha Mapping And Tomography Observations (CLAMATO) Survey conducted with the LRIS spectrograph on the Keck-I telescope. This project used Lyman-alpha forest absorption in the spectra of faint star forming galaxies and quasars at z ~ 2-3 to trace neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium. In particular, we use 320 objects over a footprint of ~0.2 deg^2 to reconstruct the absorption field at 2.05 < z < 2.55 at ~2 h^{-1}Mpc resolution. We apply a Wiener filtering technique to the observed data to reconstruct three dimensional maps of the field over a volume of 4.1 x 10^5 comoving cubic Mpc. In addition to the filtered flux maps, for the first time we infer the underlying dark matter field through a forward modeling framework from a joint likelihood of galaxy and Lyman-alpha forest data, finding clear examples of the detailed cosmic web consisting of cosmic voids, sheets, filaments, and nodes. In addition to traditional figures, we present a number of interactive three dimensional models to allow exploration of the data and qualitative comparisons to known galaxy surveys. We find that our inferred over-densities are consistent with those found from galaxy fields. Radio Active Galactic Nuclei (RAGNs) are mainly found in dense structures (i.e., clusters/groups) at redshifts of z$<$2 and are commonly used to detect protoclusters at higher redshift. Here, we attempt to study the host and environmental properties of two relatively faint ($\mathrm L_\mathrm{1.4GHz} \sim10^{25}$ W Hz$^{-1}$) RAGNs in a known protocluster at z=3.3 in the PCl J0227-0421 field, detected using the latest radio observation obtained as part of the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large-Scale Environments (ORELSE) Survey. Using new spectroscopic observations obtained from Keck/MOSFIRE as part of the Charting Cluster Construction with the VIMOS Ultra-Deep Survey (VUDS) and ORELSE (C3VO) survey and previous spectroscopic data obtained as part of the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) and VUDS, we revise the three-dimensional overdensity field around this protocluster. The protocluster is embedded in a large scale overdensity protostructure. This protostructure has an estimated total mass of $\sim$2.6$\times10^{15} M_\odot$ and contains several overdensity peaks. Both RAGNs are hosted by very bright and massive galaxies, while their hosts show extreme differences color, indicating that they have different ages and are in different evolutionary stages. Furthermore, we find that they are not in the most locally dense parts of the protostructure, but are fairly close to the centers of their parent overdensity peaks. We propose a scenario where merging might already have happened in both cases, which lowered the local density of their surrounding area and boosted their stellar mass. We report the discovery of a spectroscopically-confirmed strong Lyman-$\alpha$ emitter at $z=7.0281\pm0.0003$, observed as part of the Reionization Cluster Lensing Survey (RELICS). This galaxy, dubbed "Dichromatic Primeval Galaxy" at $z\sim7$ (DP7), shows two distinct components. While fairly unremarkable in terms of its ultraviolet (UV) luminosity ($\sim0.3L^{\ast}_{UV}$, where $L^{\ast}_{UV}$ is the characteristic luminosity), DP7 has one of the highest observed Lyman-$\alpha$ equivalent widths (EWs) among Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters at $z>6$ ($>200$ Angstrom in the rest frame). The strong Lyman-$\alpha$ emission generally suggests a young metal-poor, low-dust galaxy; however, we find that the UV slope $\beta$ of the galaxy as a whole is redder than typical star-forming galaxies at these redshifts, $-1.13\pm 0.84$, likely indicating, on average, a considerable amount of dust obscuration, or an older stellar population. When we measure $\beta$ for the two components separately, however, we find evidence of differing UV colors, suggesting two separate stellar populations. Also, we find that Lyman-$\alpha$ is spatially extended and likely larger than the galaxy size, hinting to the possible existence of a Lyman-$\alpha$ halo. Rejuvenation or merging events could explain these results. Either scenario requires an extreme stellar population, possibly including a component of Population III stars, or an obscured Active Galactic Nucleus. DP7, with its low UV luminosity and high Lyman-$\alpha$ EW, represents the typical galaxies that are thought to be the major contribution to the reionization of the Universe, and for this reason DP7 is an excellent target for follow-up with the James Webb Space Telescope., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 table. Galaxy interactions and mergers are thought to play an important role in the evolution of galaxies. Studies in the nearby universe show a higher AGN fraction in interacting and merging galaxies than their isolated counterparts, indicating that such interactions are important contributors to black hole growth. To investigate the evolution of this role at higher redshifts, we have compiled the largest known sample of major spectroscopic galaxy pairs (2381 with $\Delta V <5000$ km s$^{-1}$) at $0.5

Recent hydrodynamic simulations and observations of radio jets have shown that the surrounding environment has a large effect on their resulting morphology. To investigate this we use a sample of 50 Extended Radio Active Galactic Nuclei (ERAGN) detected in the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large Scale Environments (ORELSE) survey. These sources are all successfully cross-identified to galaxies within a redshift range of $0.55 \leq z \leq 1.35$, either through spectroscopic redshifts or accurate photometric redshifts. We find that ERAGN are more compact in high-density environments than those in low-density environments at a significance level of 4.5$\sigma$. Among a series of internal properties under our scrutiny, only the radio power demonstrates a positive correlation with their spatial extent. After removing the possible radio power effect, the difference of size in low- and high-density environments persists. In the global environment analyses, the majority (86\%) of high-density ERAGN reside in the cluster/group environment. In addition, ERAGN in the cluster/group central regions are preferentially compact with a small scatter in size, compared to those in the cluster/group intermediate regions and fields. In conclusion, our data appear to support the interpretation that the dense intracluster gas in the central regions of galaxy clusters plays a major role in confining the spatial extent of radio jets.

We present constraints on the physical properties (including stellar mass, age, and star formation rate) of 207 $6\lesssim z \lesssim8$ galaxy candidates from the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS) and companion Spitzer-RELICS surveys. We measure photometry using T-PHOT and perform spectral energy distribution fitting using EA$z$Y and BAGPIPES. Of the 207 candidates for which we could successfully measure Spitzer fluxes, 23 were demoted to likely low redshift ($z<4$). Among the remaining high redshift candidates, we find intrinsic stellar masses between $1\times10^6\rm{M_{\odot}}$ and $4\times10^9\rm{M_\odot}$, and rest-frame UV absolute magnitudes between $-22.6$ and $-14.5$ mag. While our sample is mostly comprised of $L_{UV}/L^*_{UV}<1$ galaxies, there are a number of brighter objects in the sample, extending to $L_{UV}/L^*_{UV}\sim2$. The galaxies in our sample span approximately four orders of magnitude in stellar mass and star-formation rates, and exhibit ages ranging from maximally young to maximally old. We highlight 11 galaxies which have detections in Spitzer/IRAC imaging and redshift estimates $z\geq6.5$, several of which show evidence for some combination of evolved stellar populations, large contributions of nebular emission lines, and/or dust. Among these is PLCKG287+32-2013, one of the brightest $z\sim7$ candidates known (AB mag 24.9) with a Spitzer 3.6$\mu$m flux excess suggesting strong [OIII] + H-$\beta$ emission ($\sim$1000\AA\ rest-frame equivalent width). We discuss the possible uses and limits of our sample and present a public catalog of Hubble 0.4--1.6$\mu$m + Spitzer 3.6$\mu$m and 4.5$\mu$m photometry along with physical property estimates for all 207 objects in the sample. Galaxies change their properties as they assemble into clusters. In order to understand the physics behind that, we need to go back in time and observe directly what is occurring in galaxies as they fall into a cluster. We have conducted a narrow-band and $J$-band imaging survey on a cluster CL1604-D at $z=0.923$ using a new infrared instrument SWIMS installed at the Subaru Telescope. The narrow-band filter, NB1261, matches to H$\alpha$ emission from the cluster at $z=0.923$. Combined with a wide range of existing data from various surveys, we have investigated galaxy properties in and around this cluster in great detail. We have identified 27 H$\alpha$ emitters associated with the cluster. They have significant overlap with MIPS 24$\mu$m sources and are located exclusively in the star forming regime on the rest-frame $UVJ$ diagram. We have identified two groups of galaxies near the cluster in the 2D spatial distribution and the phase-space diagram, which are likely to be in-falling to the cluster main body. We have compared various physical properties of star forming galaxies, such as specific star formation rates (burstiness) and morphologies (merger) as a function of environment; cluster center, older group, younger group, and the field. As a result, a global picture has emerged on how the galaxy properties are altered as they assemble into a denser region. This includes the occurrence of mergers, enhancement of star formation activity, excursion to the dusty starburst phase, and eventual quenching to a passive phase., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures. We present the first [CII] 158 $\mu$m luminosity function (LF) at $z\sim 5$ from a sample of serendipitous lines detected in the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE). A search performed over the 118 ALPINE pointings revealed several serendipitous lines. Based on their fidelity, we selected 14 lines for the final catalog. According to the redshift of their counterparts, we identified 8 out of 14 detections as [CII] lines at $z\sim 5$, and two as CO transitions at lower redshifts. The remaining 4 lines have an elusive identification in the available catalogs and we considered them as [CII] candidates. We used the 8 confirmed [CII] and the 4 [CII] candidates to build one of the first [CII] LFs at $z\sim 5$. We found that 11 out of these 12 sources have a redshift very similar to that of the ALPINE target in the same pointing, suggesting the presence of overdensities around the targets. Therefore, we split the sample in two (a "clustered" and "field" sub-sample) according to their redshift separation and built two separate LFs. Our estimates suggest that there could be an evolution of the [CII] LF between $z \sim 5$ and $z \sim 0$. By converting the [CII] luminosity to star formation rate we evaluated the cosmic star formation rate density (SFRD) at $z\sim 5$. The clustered sample results in a SFRD $\sim 10$ times higher than previous measurements from UV-selected galaxies. On the other hand, from the field sample (likely representing the average galaxy population) we derived a SFRD $\sim 1.6$ higher compared to current estimates from UV surveys but compatible within the errors. Because of the large uncertainties, observations of larger samples are necessary to better constrain the SFRD at $z\sim 5$. This work presents the first comprehensive study of structure formation at the peak epoch of cosmic star formation over $1.4\leq z \leq 3.6$ in the COSMOS field, including the most massive high redshift galaxy proto-clusters at that era. We apply the extended COSMIC BIRTH algorithm to account for a multi-tracer and multi-survey Bayesian analysis at Lagrangian initial cosmic times. Combining the data of five different spectroscopic redshift surveys (zCOSMOS-deep, VUDS, MOSDEF, ZFIRE, and FMOS-COSMOS), we show that the corresponding unbiased primordial density fields can be inferred, if a proper survey completeness computation from the parent photometric catalogs, and a precise treatment of the non-linear and non-local evolution on the light-cone is taken into account, including (i) gravitational matter displacements, (ii) peculiar velocities, and (iii) galaxy bias. The reconstructions reveal a holistic view on the known proto-clusters in the COSMOS field and the growth of the cosmic web towards lower redshifts. The inferred distant dark matter density fields concurrently with other probes like tomographic reconstructions of the intergalactic medium will explore the interplay of gas and dark matter and are ideally suited to study structure formation at high redshifts in the light of upcoming deep surveys., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We introduce LATIS, the Ly$\alpha$ Tomography IMACS Survey, a spectroscopic survey at Magellan designed to map the z=2.2-2.8 intergalactic medium (IGM) in three dimensions by observing the Ly$\alpha$ forest in the spectra of galaxies and QSOs. Within an area of 1.7 deg${}^2$, we will observe approximately half of $\gtrsim L^*$ galaxies at z=2.2-3.2 for typically 12 hours, providing a dense network of sightlines piercing the IGM with an average transverse separation of 2.5 $h^{-1}$ comoving Mpc (1 physical Mpc). At these scales, the opacity of the IGM is expected to be closely related to the dark matter density, and LATIS will therefore map the density field in the $z \sim 2.5$ universe at $\sim$Mpc resolution over the largest volume to date. Ultimately LATIS will produce approximately 3800 spectra of z=2.2-3.2 galaxies that probe the IGM within a volume of $4 \times 10^6 h^{-3}$ Mpc${}^3$, large enough to contain a representative sample of structures from protoclusters to large voids. Observations are already complete over one-third of the survey area. In this paper, we describe the survey design and execution. We present the largest IGM tomographic maps at comparable resolution yet made. We show that the recovered matter overdensities are broadly consistent with cosmological expectations based on realistic mock surveys, that they correspond to galaxy overdensities, and that we can recover structures identified using other tracers. LATIS is conducted in Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey fields, including COSMOS. Coupling the LATIS tomographic maps with the rich data sets collected in these fields will enable novel studies of environment-dependent galaxy evolution and the galaxy-IGM connection at cosmic noon., Comment: accepted to ApJ; Fig. 26 contains animated rendering of the IGM maps

We report the spectroscopic confirmation of a new protocluster in the COSMOS field at $z$ $\sim$ 2.2, COSMOS Cluster 2.2 (CC2.2), originally identified as an overdensity of narrowband selected H$\alpha$ emitting candidates. With only two masks of Keck/MOSFIRE near-IR spectroscopy in both $H$ ($\sim$ 1.47-1.81 $\mu$m) and $K$ ($\sim$ 1.92-2.40 $\mu$m) bands ($\sim$ 1.5 hour each), we confirm 35 unique protocluster members with at least two emission lines detected with S/N $>$ 3. Combined with 12 extra members from the zCOSMOS-deep spectroscopic survey (47 in total), we estimate a mean redshift and a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of $z_{mean}$=2.23224 $\pm$ 0.00101 and $\sigma_{los}$=645 $\pm$ 69 km s$^{-1}$ for this protocluster, respectively. Assuming virialization and spherical symmetry for the system, we estimate a total mass of $M_{vir}$ $\sim$ $(1-2) \times$10$^{14}$ $M_{\odot}$ for the structure. We evaluate a number density enhancement of $\delta_{g}$ $\sim$ 7 for this system and we argue that the structure is likely not fully virialized at $z$ $\sim$ 2.2. However, in a spherical collapse model, $\delta_{g}$ is expected to grow to a linear matter enhancement of $\sim$ 1.9 by $z$=0, exceeding the collapse threshold of 1.69, and leading to a fully collapsed and virialized Coma-type structure with a total mass of $M_{dyn}$($z$=0) $\sim$ 9.2$\times$10$^{14}$ $M_{\odot}$ by now. This observationally efficient confirmation suggests that large narrowband emission-line galaxy surveys, when combined with ancillary photometric data, can be used to effectively trace the large-scale structure and protoclusters at a time when they are mostly dominated by star-forming galaxies.

We present the detection of CO(5-4) with S/N> 7 - 13 and a lower CO transition with S/N > 3 (CO(4-3) for 4 galaxies, and CO(3-2) for one) with ALMA in band 3 and 4 in five main sequence star-forming galaxies with stellar masses 3-6x10^10 M/M_sun at 3 < z < 3.5. We find a good correlation between the total far-infrared luminosity LFIR and the luminosity of the CO(5-4) transition L'CO(5-4), where L'CO(5-4) increases with SFR, indicating that CO(5-4) is a good tracer of the obscured SFR in these galaxies. The two galaxies that lie closer to the star-forming main sequence have CO SLED slopes that are comparable to other star-forming populations, such as local SMGs and BzK star-forming galaxies; the three objects with higher specific star formation rates (sSFR) have far steeper CO SLEDs, which possibly indicates a more concentrated episode of star formation. By exploiting the CO SLED slopes to extrapolate the luminosity of the CO(1-0) transition, and using a classical conversion factor for main sequence galaxies of alpha_CO = 3.8 M_sun(K km s^-1 pc^-2)^-1, we find that these galaxies are very gas rich, with molecular gas fractions between 60 and 80%, and quite long depletion times, between 0.2 and 1 Gyr. Finally, we obtain dynamical masses that are comparable with the sum of stellar and gas mass (at least for four out of five galaxies), allowing us to put a first constraint on the alpha_CO parameter for main sequence galaxies at an unprecedented redshift., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures; accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Recent zoom-in cosmological simulations have shown that stellar feedback can flatten the inner density profile of the dark matter halo in low-mass galaxies. A correlation between the stellar/gas velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{star}$, $\sigma_{gas}$) and the specific star formation rate (sSFR) is predicted as an observational test of the role of stellar feedback in re-shaping the dark matter density profile. In this work we test the validity of this prediction by studying a sample of star-forming galaxies at $0.6

In this study we investigate 179 radio-IR galaxies drawn from a sample of spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies that are detected in radio and mid-infrared (MIR) in the redshift range of $0.55 \leq z \leq 1.30$ in the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large Scale Environments (ORELSE) survey. We constrain the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) contribution in the total IR luminosity (f$_{\text{AGN}}$), and estimate the AGN luminosity (L$_{\text{AGN}}$) and the star formation rate (SFR) using the CIGALE Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting routine. Based on the f$_{\text{AGN}}$ and radio luminosity, radio-IR galaxies are split into: galaxies that host either high or low f$_{\text{AGN}}$ AGN (high-/low-f$_{\text{AGN}}$), and star forming galaxies with little to no AGN activity (SFGs). We study the colour, stellar mass, radio luminosity, L$_{\text{AGN}}$ and SFR properties of the three radio-IR sub-samples, comparing to a spec-IR sample drawn from spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies that are also detected in MIR. No significant difference between radio luminosity of these sub-samples was found, which could be due to the combined contribution of radio emission from AGN and star formation. We find a positive relationship between L$_{\text{AGN}}$and specific SFR (sSFR) for both AGN sub-samples, strongly suggesting a co-evolution scenario of AGN and SF in these galaxies. A toy model is designed to demonstrate this co-evolution scenario, where we find that, in almost all cases, a rapid quenching timescale is required, which we argue is a signature of AGN quenching. The environmental preference for intermediate/infall regions of clusters/groups remains across the co-evolution scenario, which suggests that galaxies might be in an orbital motion around the cluster/group during the scenario.

Recent observations have revealed the presence of strong CIII] emission (EW$_{\rm{CIII]}}>20$ \r{A}) in $z>6$ galaxies, the origin of which remains unclear. In an effort to understand the nature of these line emitters, we have initiated a survey targeting CIII] emission in gravitationally-lensed reionization era analogs identified in HST imaging of clusters from the RELICS survey. Here we report initial results on four galaxies selected to have low stellar masses (2-8$\times$10$^7$ M$_\odot$) and J$_{125}$-band flux excesses indicative of intense [OIII]+H$\beta$ emission (EW$_{\rm{[OIII]+H\beta}}$=500-2000 \r{A}), similar to what has been observed at $z>6$. We detect CIII] emission in three of the four sources, with the CIII] EW reaching values seen in the reionization era (EW$_{\rm{CIII]}}\simeq 17-22$ \r{A}) in the two sources with the strongest optical line emission (EW$_{\rm{[OIII]+H\beta}}\simeq 2000$ \r{A}). We have obtained a Magellan/FIRE near-infrared spectrum of the strongest CIII] emitter in our sample, revealing gas that is both metal poor and highly ionized. Using photoionization models, we are able to simultaneously reproduce the intense CIII] and optical line emission for extremely young (2-3 Myr) and metal poor (0.06-0.08 Z$_\odot$) stellar populations, as would be expected after a substantial upturn in the SFR of a low mass galaxy. The sources in this survey are among the first for which CIII] has been used as the primary means of redshift confirmation. We suggest that it should be possible to extend this approach to $z>6$ with current facilities, using CIII] to measure redshifts of objects with IRAC excesses indicating EW$_{\rm{[OIII]+H\beta}}\simeq 2000$ \r{A}, providing a method of spectroscopic confirmation independent of Ly$\alpha$., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Measurements of stellar properties of galaxies when the universe was less than one billion years old yield some of the only observational constraints of the onset of star formation. We present here the inclusion of \textit{Spitzer}/IRAC imaging in the spectral energy distribution fitting of the seven highest-redshift galaxy candidates selected from the \emph{Hubble Space Telescope} imaging of the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS). We find that for 6/8 \textit{HST}-selected $z\gtrsim8$ sources, the $z\gtrsim8$ solutions are still strongly preferred over $z\sim$1-2 solutions after the inclusion of \textit{Spitzer} fluxes, and two prefer a $z\sim 7$ solution, which we defer to a later analysis. We find a wide range of intrinsic stellar masses ($5\times10^6 M_{\odot}$ -- $4\times10^9$ $M_{\odot}$), star formation rates (0.2-14 $M_{\odot}\rm yr^{-1}$), and ages (30-600 Myr) among our sample. Of particular interest is Abell1763-1434, which shows evidence of an evolved stellar population at $z\sim8$, implying its first generation of star formation occurred just $< 100$ Myr after the Big Bang. SPT0615-JD, a spatially resolved $z\sim10$ candidate, remains at its high redshift, supported by deep \textit{Spitzer}/IRAC data, and also shows some evidence for an evolved stellar population. Even with the lensed, bright apparent magnitudes of these $z \gtrsim 8$ candidates (H = 26.1-27.8 AB mag), only the \textit{James Webb Space Telescope} will be able further confirm the presence of evolved stellar populations early in the universe., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

Large surveys of galaxy clusters with the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes, including CLASH and the Frontier Fields, have demonstrated the power of strong gravitational lensing to efficiently deliver large samples of high-redshift galaxies. We extend this strategy through a wider, shallower survey named RELICS, the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey. This survey, described here, was designed primarily to deliver the best and brightest high-redshift candidates from the first billion years after the Big Bang. RELICS observed 41 massive galaxy clusters with Hubble and Spitzer at 0.4-1.7um and 3.0-5.0um, respectively. We selected 21 clusters based on Planck PSZ2 mass estimates and the other 20 based on observed or inferred lensing strength. Our 188-orbit Hubble Treasury Program obtained the first high-resolution near-infrared images of these clusters to efficiently search for lensed high-redshift galaxies. We observed 46 WFC3/IR pointings (~200 arcmin^2) with two orbits divided among four filters (F105W, F125W, F140W, and F160W) and ACS imaging as needed to achieve single-orbit depth in each of three filters (F435W, F606W, and F814W). As previously reported by Salmon et al., we discovered 322 z ~ 6 - 10 candidates, including the brightest known at z ~ 6, and the most distant spatially-resolved lensed arc known at z ~ 10. Spitzer IRAC imaging (945 hours awarded, plus 100 archival) has crucially enabled us to distinguish z ~ 10 candidates from z ~ 2 interlopers. For each cluster, two HST observing epochs were staggered by about a month, enabling us to discover 11 supernovae, including 3 lensed supernovae, which we followed up with 20 orbits from our program. We present a large spectroscopic campaign with Keck/MOSFIRE targeting Lyman-alpha emission (Ly$\alpha$) from intrinsically faint Lyman-break Galaxies (LBGs) behind 12 efficient galaxy cluster lenses. Gravitational lensing allows us to probe the more abundant faint galaxy population to sensitive Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width limits. During the campaign we targeted 70 LBG candidates with MOSFIRE Y-band, selected photometrically to cover Ly$\alpha$ over the range $75$ emission lines in 2 of these galaxies and find that they are likely Ly$\alpha$ at $z=7.148\pm0.001$ and $z=7.161\pm0.001$. We present new lens models for 4 of the galaxy clusters, using our previously published lens models for the remaining clusters to determine the magnification factors for the source galaxies. Using a Bayesian framework that employs large scale reionization simulations of the intergalactic medium (IGM) as well as realistic properties of the interstellar medium and circumgalactic medium, we infer the volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction, $\overline{x}_{\mathrm{HI}}$, in the IGM during reionization to be $\overline{x}_{\mathrm{HI}}=0.88^{+0.05}_{-0.10}$ at $z=7.6\pm0.6$. Our result is consistent with a late and rapid reionization scenario inferred by Planck.

Using 57 Radio Active Galactic nuclei (RAGN) at 0.55 $\leq$ z $\leq$ 1.3 drawn from five fields of the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large Scale Environments (ORELSE) survey, we study the effect of injection of energy from outbursts of RAGN on their spectroscopically-confirmed neighboring galaxies (SNGs). We observe an elevated fraction of quenched neighbors (fq) within 500 kpc projected radius of RAGN in the most dense local environments compared to those of non-RAGN control samples matched to the RAGN population in colour, stellar mass, and local environment at 2$\sigma$ significance. Further analyses show that there are offsets at similar significance between fqs of RAGN-SNGs and the appropriate control samples for galaxies specifically in cluster environments and those hosted by most massive cluster galaxies, which tentatively suggests that some negative feedback from the RAGN is occurring in these dense environments. In addition, we find that the median radio power of RAGN increases with increasing local overdensity, an effect which may lend itself to the quenching of neighboring galaxies. Furthermore, we find that, in the highest local overdensities, the fq of the sub-sample of lower stellar mass RAGN-SNGs is larger than that of the higher stellar mass RAGN-SNGs sub-sample, which indicates a more pronounced effect from RAGN on lower stellar mass galaxies. We present a study of the star-formation rate (SFR)-density relation at z ~ 0.9 using data drawn from the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large Scale Environments (ORELSE) survey. We find that SFR does depend on environment, but only for intermediate-stellar mass galaxies (10^10.1 < M* / Msol < 10^10.8) wherein the median SFR at the highest densities is 0.2-0.3 dex less than at lower densities at a significance of 4 sigma. Interestingly, mass does not drive SFR; galaxies that are more/less massive have SFRs that vary at most by ~20% across all environments showing no statistically significant dependence. We further split galaxies into low-redshift (z ~ 0.8) and high-redshift (z ~ 1.05) subsamples and observe nearly identical behavior. We devise a simple toy model to explore possible star-formation histories (SFHs) for galaxies evolving between these redshifts. The key assumption in this model is that star-forming galaxies in a given environment-stellar mass bin can be described as a superposition of two exponential timescales (SFR ~ e^(-t/tau)): a long-tau timescale with tau = 4 Gyr to simulate "normal" star-forming galaxies, and a short-tau timescale with free tau (between 0.3 < tau/Gyr < 2) to simulate galaxies on a quenching trajectory. In general we find that galaxies residing in low/high environmental densities are more heavily weighted to the long-tau/short-tau pathways respectively, which we argue is a signature of environmental quenching. Furthermore, for intermediate-stellar mass galaxies this transition begins at intermediate-density environments suggesting that environmental quenching is relevant in group-like halos and/or cluster infall regions., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Using ~5000 spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies drawn from the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large Scale Environments (ORELSE) survey we investigate the relationship between color and galaxy density for galaxy populations of various stellar masses in the redshift range $0.55 \le z \le 1.4$. The fraction of galaxies with colors consistent with no ongoing star formation ($f_q$) is broadly observed to increase with increasing stellar mass, increasing galaxy density, and decreasing redshift, with clear differences observed in $f_q$ between field and group/cluster galaxies at the highest redshifts studied. We use a semi-empirical model to generate mock group/cluster galaxies unaffected by environmental processes and compare them to observed populations to constrain the environmental quenching efficiency ($\Psi_{convert}$). High-density environments from $0.55 \le z \le 1.4$ appear capable of efficiently quenching galaxies with $\log(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot})>10.45$. Lower stellar mass galaxies also appear efficiently quenched at the lowest redshifts, but this efficiency drops precipitously with increasing redshift. Quenching efficiencies, combined with simulated group/cluster accretion histories and results from a companion ORELSE study, are used to constrain the average time from group/cluster accretion to quiescence and the time between accretion and the inception of quenching. These timescales were constrained to be <$t_{convert}$>=$2.4\pm0.3$ and <$t_{delay}$>=$1.3\pm0.4$ Gyr, respectively, for galaxies with $\log(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot})>10.45$ and <$t_{convert}$>=$3.3\pm0.3$ and <$t_{delay}$>=$2.2\pm0.4$ Gyr for lower stellar mass galaxies. We present an investigation of the dependence of galaxy kinematics on the environment for a sample of 94 star-forming galaxies at $z\sim0.9$ from the ORELSE survey. ORELSE is a large photometric and spectroscopic campaign dedicated to mapping out and characterizing galaxy properties across a full range of environments in 15 fields containing large-scale structures (LSSs) in a redshift range of $0.6 < z < 1.3$. We constrained the rotation velocity for our kinematic sample in an ORELSE field, containing the SC1604 supercluster, by fitting high-resolution semi-analytical models to the data. We constructed the stellar-mass/B-band Tully-Fisher relation and found no dependence of the intrinsic scatter on both local and global environment. Moreover, we compared the stellar-to-dynamical mass ratio ($M_\ast/M_{dyn}$) of SC1604 galaxies to those residing in less dense local environment by leveraging data from the HR-COSMOS sample. We found that, at fixed stellar mass, SC1604 galaxies have $\sim30\%$ smaller dynamical masses on average. By comparing the distributions of the galaxy parameters that define $M_{dyn}$ (i.e., circular velocity and the characteristic radius $r_{2.2}$) between SC1604 and HR-COSMOS, we found that smaller dynamical masses are mostly caused by smaller $r_{2.2}$ for SC1604 galaxies. We also observed that SC1604 galaxies in general show $\sim20\%$ lower stellar specific angular momentum ($j_\ast$) with respect to the HR-COSMOS sample. Adopting literature estimates for (1) the excess rate of galaxy-galaxy mergers in intermediate/high-density environments and (2) the average amount of $j_\ast$ loss per merger event, we investigated the possibility that galaxy mergers are mainly responsible for the loss of angular momentum in higher density environments., Comment: 40 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables in the main text + appendix, published in MNRAS

Golovich et al. 2017b presents an optical imaging and spectroscopic survey of 29 radio relic merging galaxy clusters. In this paper, we study this survey to identify substructure and quantify the dynamics of the mergers. Using a combined photometric and spectroscopic approach, we identify the minimum number of substructures in each system to describe the galaxy populations and estimate the line of sight velocity difference between likely merging subclusters. We find that the line-of-sight velocity components of the mergers are typically small compared with the maximum three dimensional relative velocity (usually $<1000$ km s$^{-1}$ and often consistent with zero). This suggests that the merger axes of these systems are generally in or near the plane of the sky matching findings in magneto-hydrodynamical simulations. In 28 of the 29 systems we identify substructures in the galaxy population aligned with the radio relic(s) and presumed associated merger induced shock. From this ensemble, we identify eight systems to include in a `gold' sample that is prime for further observation, modeling, and simulation study. We present a gravitational lensing model of MACS J1149.5+2223 using ultra-deep Hubble Frontier Fields imaging data and spectroscopic redshifts from HST grism and VLT/MUSE spectroscopic data. We create total mass maps using 38 multiple images (13 sources) and 608 weak lensing galaxies, as well as 100 multiple images of 31 star-forming regions in the galaxy that hosts Supernova Refsdal. We find good agreement with a range of recent models within the HST field of view. We present a map of the ratio of projected stellar mass to total mass ($f_{\star}$), and find that the stellar mass fraction for this cluster peaks on the primary BCG. Averaging within a radius of 0.3 Mpc, we obtain a value of $\langle f_{\star} \rangle = 0.012^{+0.004}_{-0.003}$, consistent with other recent results for this ratio in cluster environments, though with a large global error (up to $\delta f_{\star} = 0.005$) primarily due to the choice of an IMF. We compare values of $f_{\star}$ and measures of star formation efficiency for this cluster to other Hubble Frontier Fields clusters studied in the literature, finding that MACS1149 has a higher stellar mass fraction than these other clusters, but a star formation efficiency typical of massive clusters., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, published in ApJ May 23, 2018
